30-Somethings - How did you pick your goal weight?

09-30-2008, 08:12 PM
I set mine currently to 130... I first thought 120 then a friend said that would be too much. It was an ex so maybe I shouldn't have listened to him.

However I used to weight 115 in my early 20s and 104 in high school. I just don't know. I want to be realistic but also make sure I set a "good" goal.

Can you believe I never really thought I was skinny? My 2 best friends in HS were under 100 # so I was the "big" one even though none of us weighed enough to give blood.

I'm 5'2" and med frame.

Here you go - a couple of recent threads on the topic:

I just measured my wrist and it seems that I am Large frame. I'm 5'2" with a 5.5" wrist

09-30-2008, 08:50 PM
I am 5' 8" (used to be 5' 9" til I got RA) & in high school I was 150... skinny.

My best friend was a zero so I was the fat one. I feel you're pain!! LOL

I never thought I was skinny either... people told me that next to her, I was chunky... or my fave... pleasantly plump.

I wore a size 8-10 for heavens sake!!!

09-30-2008, 09:10 PM
Well, I'm 5'4 and I have a pretty large frame. In fact, one of my old boyfriends who I'm still friendly with 28 plus years later, once said " I could be a line backer for the NY Giants!" He said it without an ounce of malice, so we both just laughed and laughed. I have big shoulders; there's nothing I can do about it. I feel I'm almost at the perfect weight for myself. 145 allows me to have a five pound cushion and still wear a loose size 10. I'm way past wanting to be skinny. I just want everything to be in a healthy range when I go to the doctor for physicals.
If I may add my two cents in, I would allow yourself to see what feels good and is realistically manageable for you to maintain over time without feeling deprived.
I wish you continued success- I know you will do it!!

After checking some of the calculators 130 seems to be in range so I think I will stay with that for now. Some say 110 and some say 144.

Thanks for your help and support. Some of you are so close.... i'm jealous :)

10-01-2008, 10:43 AM
i chose mine by the BMI scale.. it's mid-average

10-01-2008, 12:03 PM
I just picked it out of thin air. According to the charts, I should be anywhere from around 130 something to 177, or something like that. I would be happy under 200, but I've got my goal at 180 currently. If i ever get there, I'll assess where I'm at then, :D

10-01-2008, 12:42 PM
I picked what I've been healthy at before and added 5lbs for age/having given birth. ha. Really, though, I was always good around 135. I start to look REALLY thin around 125, and skeletal below 120. I figure I'll reanalyze as I get closer.

10-02-2008, 10:46 AM
I chose 165 b/c that was the weight I was at when I first started dating my now DH and that was the weight I felt comfortable at.

I think I'll be comfortable around a size 10 or so...I'm a 14/16 right now.

10-02-2008, 10:55 AM
I set my goal to be around the weight range of when I was in High School.
And to think back then I thought I was "bigger" than other girls! How stupid to think!

10-02-2008, 01:54 PM
Well to start with I'm tall 5'10". I picked my goal weight of 150lbs because the guy was giving me the tour asked my goals and such(at that time I wasn't so fat) and he said that I'd be a knock out if I lost 30lbs, I was 180lbs at that moment.

So very scientific...

10-02-2008, 02:47 PM
I never thought I was skinny either... people told me that next to her, I was chunky... or my fave... pleasantly plump.

Oh, I love the "but she has such a pretty face" line
At any rate, I set my new goal for a size I'd like to return to. On my first journey down this road I lost 160+ lbs and was down to a size 8, despite my smaller frame, I looked horrible-people asked if I was ill. I felt most comfortable & healthy at a size 10-12, so that's my goal.

10-02-2008, 11:06 PM
I looked up what it should be for my height and it was 115-130 and I just picked 125 because it was the middle.

10-02-2008, 11:43 PM
I measured my wrist like I mentioned before and based on that it means I'm large frame.... so I can't believe I was 104 in H.S. and still don't remember feeling skinny. Crazy! I can't imagine getting back done to that again. I was the same height.

I have been 5'2" since i was about 10 years old. I matured early. I had a size c chest at the time too.... Men were horrible :(

10-02-2008, 11:47 PM
I picked a weight I had previously maintained without any dieting angst. But I'll re-evaluate when I'm closer. My exercise is different now than it was then, and I'm older. My final goal will be a weight that's easy to maintain.

10-03-2008, 04:11 PM
I'm setting my goal weights in intervals so it'll be a little easier for me..like right now I'm 196 and I'm trying to get to 185,then that way it's not so dicouraging for me looking at my ticker reading "19 pounds gone only 1000 more to go" LOL!! WW told me that from 117 to 140 is a healthy weight for me and my ultimate goal is 117,but, anywhere around 120's is fine with me,and I will get there someday!! And I can't wait!!

10-06-2008, 01:29 AM
I've discussed my goal with a couple of people and I've had different reactions. They said if I lose 60 pounds I will be too thin... but I'm sure I won't I used to weight 104 (about 85 pounds less). I was wondering if 130 was a big enough goal..... But I am older now, I'm 36. well we'll see.

It seems that I hide my weight well... maybe my big boobs distract from my stomach LOL

I've decided I'm not going to mention how much I want to lose to anyone except for a few close friends.

Also I've also noticed that I've very compact. I didn't know but I felt another friends arm and it was very smushy. I am very firm. I'm thinking about starting another thread regarding this question... smushy vs. firm fat I'm wondering what the difference is.

Thanks for listening :)

10-06-2008, 09:39 AM
Smushy vs. firm fat for me that is post-child vs. pre-child. I miss my firm fat. :(

10-06-2008, 02:35 PM
Well, I was 150 once. And, I recall how good I felt and I was just happy. I also have a pair of jeans that I used to wear when I weighed that, so I'm anxious to be able to wear them again. Once I reach 150, I'm going to go for 130 or 140, not sure. While yes, I could be 130, I don't know if I am going to go for ultra skinny me, or just 140 me that has a little 10 pounds or so there. Also, I'm big boned, so I have to see how I feel when I hit 150 first. :)

10-06-2008, 04:51 PM
My target weight is smack in the middle of the normal BMI for my height. And, it was a nice even 50 pounds to lose. If my new way of eating takes me further, so be it, but that's my initial goal. It will also be less than I was in high school by about 10 pounds!

10-07-2008, 09:34 PM
My dream weight is 125 but that seems so far away...

When I got pregnant I was 125 and thin. I thought I was fat!!! LOL! I think at my age and after being big for nearly TEN YEARS 130-135 would be pretty darn good.

10-13-2008, 07:33 PM
I am new here but I so enjoy reading what all of you have to say.

I chose my goal weight because of how happy and healthy I felt before my third child. I weighed 120 when i got pregnant with him but I figured that since he is now 10 (which means I'm no longer in my 20s-argh!) 120 might be too far out of reach and may actually look unhealthy.

When I was in high school I barely weighed 100 and everyone thought I was anorexic. I wasn't and hated to be looked at like I was sick. NOW... I'm heavier than even the men in my family- except my DH... I have to make sure that he stays bigger than me so that I can still feel like a woman. :o I knew somethign had to change when I realized I'm heavier than both my brothers, my dad, and my grandfather. And WHY does it seem as though I am always front and center in out family group pictures?! Shorter than the rest and fatter than the rest... Oh Well... that is going to change soon!

oh... back on track... 130 is my goal because that is when I felt the best!

10-13-2008, 07:58 PM
I read somewhere that most people, when shown photos of women, find photos of women at 22 percent body fat to have the most attractive proportions. Why that should have stuck in my head since I have been happily married for 14 years I don't know, but it did. :dizzy: So I chose the BMI weight that correlates to about that amount -- once I get there, I'll see what I think.

10-13-2008, 08:04 PM
the ww site has a chart I went I went by that for my age and height, the max I should be is 148 the min is 124. So I set my goal for 148 right now and if I feel like I want to be less once I get there I will lose more but for now I am working on getting to 148

10-14-2008, 06:03 AM
I should be around 150 give or take 10 pounds. I have set mine at 160 because I have extra belly fat from having babies. I will be happy to be able to sit in a European bathtub and not have my butt act like a damn!

I got down to 135 for my wedding but was struggling to stay that low...didn't last long. I figure between 140 and 150 will be healthy yet easier to maintain.

The last time I lost a lot of weight I was just under 200 lbs, and in a size 16. I was this size when I met my husband, but moving home (I lived out of state) and getting married fixed that problem. *eyeroll* I want to be around 160 12-14 in size.

I just measureed my wrist. 7.25. I don't have plump wrists either. At the most it will shrink to 7 when I lose weight. Bracelets have always been a problem for me, regardless of the weight. Shirts too. Very broad shoulders. Woulda made a heck of a linebacker. :D

I need to check the BMI again. I don't remember what it said I should be... *muzak-please hold*... Okay. One calculator says 151 for weight, another says 145 so ... 143-153 would be a good final weight for me, knowing my body shape and size. I remember (vaguely *snort*) being 140 in high school and probably could go beyond that, but I'm not going to push it right now. I can always reevaluate that step when it gets here.

10-25-2008, 12:47 PM
I just went 10 pounds over what I weighed when I thought I looked HOT! That was like, um, 10 years ago...

10-25-2008, 01:55 PM
I did the BMI thing and it said my goal weight is still in the overweight category. I should have my goal wright at 125. 140 seemed doable and for some reason 125 seems totally unreachable. I was 125 in high school and after having two babies and whole lot more cleavage, I feel that 125 would not hang well on me. I am going to leave my goal at 140.

The ranges in BMI are roughly accurate for me, but they aren't for a lot of people. Some people just have heavier lean body mass, and will always be at the high end of BMI, or even over, even when fit & healthy. Don't worry about 125. Go for 140 and then re-evaluate.

10-26-2008, 01:42 PM
I picked 129 because that was a weight a I maintained easily until about 5 years ago. I dropped back down to that after my first two children with little effort.then I had number three and started eating for comfort/boredom and gradually gained 40 or so pounds......I finally hit a wall when I reached the weight I was when i gave birth , 174.
When I saw that and realized i weighed that much but WASN"T pregnant I was like okay time to to do something...
plus I want to be in the 120's, it is silly I know but just one of those things!

I have never felt skinny at the moment, only looking back have i realized i was skinny.

Even a couple years ago when i got down to 113, i still didn't feel thin. I remember buying a size small size pair of tights, but when i put them on they didn't fit and i felt fat.

In high school at 120, i was the chubby girl... but today my 13 yr old weighs about 125 and she has the perfect figure. I worry she will go thru the same feelings in high school. That she isn't as skinny as a lot of the other girls. So far, in the 8th grade, she thinks she's fine.

11-04-2008, 09:47 AM
I chose a number that was in between the weight ranges given for my age, height, and body type. The closer I get to it, the more I will adjust and see if it is the "ideal" weight for me.

11-07-2008, 06:39 PM
I chose my weight, but what I weighed when all of the suits in my closet fit.

For me I didn't have a "goal number" in mind until recently. It is important for me to be below 25 BMI which will happen less than 4 pounds away. Physically though, I am not happy with what I am seeing.

11-08-2008, 11:12 AM
I'm also 5'2 and currenty weigh 150. I set my goal to between 130-135. That was what I weighed in high school and for a long time before I got married...lol (unfortunately my italian husband could cook WAY better than my mother...LOL!)

While I'd like to be at that weight I'm trying to focus more on how I look overall. I'd like to be in shape and health looking. As I lose weight I'll reassess and see if I need to change my goal!

GOOD LUCK, I'm rooting for you!!! :cheer2:

11-08-2008, 03:12 PM
I chose my goal weight of 115-120lbs because two years ago I was about that size and I felt amazing! I just want to feel that way about my weight and health. I wore clothing confidently instead of self conciously. Being only 5'2'' I feel like I should be tiny, anytime I gain weight I always feel like on a small frame it just looks like more!

being a short girl, every 5 pounds makes a big difference

11-09-2008, 03:07 PM
I picked my goal weight by using the weight that my body naturally gravitates to when I am thinner. That weight is between 112-117. The trouble is whenever I am at that weight, I am never content. I always want to go lower.

I have gained about 20 lbs in the last two years and I am going to get back to my normal weight and I am going to try to be content.

I am not very tall so I have this issue, but my poor mother is not even 5 foot and has a problem maintaining a healthy weight. It seems so unfair now that I understand how calories work. She was really thin most of my life but at 4'10" she ate very little. In the last years she has been eating more (like an average person) and she has gained weight.

11-12-2008, 10:13 PM
I am 6 ft tall and i just decided on 200 pounds as my goal weight,, my ideal weight based on my BMI would be somewhere around 175lbs,, but 200 just sounds good to me:0)

I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I also wish I realized how "hot" I was in high school. I was 130ish at 5'2" which sounds on the heavy side, but I was quite muscular/athletic with a large frame, so I wore it well. I llok at those pictures an long for those days again. It's a really good idea to gicve yourself a cushion from that (h.s.) weight, factoring in having children and age. I set mine at 140, but as everyone else has said, I assess the situation when I get a lot closer.
Happy calorie burning!
