I love making my own taco salads I eat them 3-4x per week. I never buy the taco spice mix anymore and I would be suprised if taco bell didn't add sugar to theirs as well. all the pre packaged ones have added sugar and corn starch or flour... I make my own, after a few times I just started eyeballing the measurements or you can make a big batch up and then just use as needed...

1 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon cumin
3/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
dash of red pepper

These are just general guidelines like I said before- I just eyeball it...
Both df and I prefer it without all those fillers in it!

I think I did OK. DH had a dinner out with co workers last night so I was on my own.. otherwise I would have made Taco Salad here at home. **** if I don't have to cook I'm not gonna.

So I got the taco salad express (no hard shell).. with extra beef and lettuce. No sour cream or cheese (I added my own FF stuff here). And I didn't eat the chips. My kids ate them instead.

The beef will be high fat unless it's a light item. Try not to have it often. Good for you on working hard to find something that works! I make healthy taco salads all the time...lowfat sour cream and salsa, lean ground beef, refried beans or kidney beans, spring mix and spinach for nutrients, etc. Yum!

Quite honestly I didn't eat the whole thing... and that was my ONLY carbs for the day. Yesterday was a BAD eating day for me. As in I didn't eat enough. Before I had the taco salad I had 176 calories and 0 carbs for the entire day.

I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, Brenda.

Your choice was a great one considering all the other tempting options at Taco Bell.

Also, I'm sure you already know...but this isn't a low carb diet....just the right carbs.

I know!! I think phase I is hard because you can't have grains or fruit... which leaves only veggies and beans. The day before I had salad 3 times and was just all out of salad mojo.

I like to count the carbs and compare it to the proteins. I try to stay in the line of carbs = protein as far as balance goes. Heck one day I had over 100 grams of protein and only 30 carbs. Not something I was trying to do but it just worked out that way.

It's funny how it all works out when we're actually tracking our consumption. I do it still, less for weight loss reasons and more for baby health reasons....but it's still fun to watch.

Do you use fitday? Man, that program is the best.

I use my-calorie-counter.com.

Not sure how it differs from fitday. I just like that I haven't found an item yet that it doesn't have in it's database.

That seems to be a popular pastime here.

I'm originally a yankee - from Minneapolis. DH is a born and bred cajun.
