Hello everyone! I am new to this forum/website. I am very glad to have found it though, I just wanted to let you all know my views, and see if anyone else wants to join.

I had started, about 3 weeks ago, reading about how to eliminate fat signifantly and lose weight. I wanted something permanant, that wouldn't leave me feeling, cranky or starved. As well, I didnt want to take any more pills!! I read a few books from Susan Powter, and searched the web on the subject.

Since that day, 3 weeks ago, I have lost a total of 16 pounds!! I feel very good. I am content with the plan. I try to eat around 20% fat. Sometimes I may eat 30%. I really try to keep it down. I buy as many no fat items as possible, eat whole grains, vegetables, lean meats, fruit, skim milk.

I also exercise everyday, except once on the weekend. I either, go for a walk, do some resistance or strength training, try to keep busy. I just would like to keep this open for everyone who is interested to give this a try. It is a gradual weight loss, and if you adapt, from what I have seen, it is permanat. I still have at least 80 more pounds to lose, and I do intend to do it, and keep it off. So, please write to me, let me know your opinions on the information I just put out. Try it!!

:)

Just wanted to say congrats on the 16 pounds you've lost so far! That is great results for 3 weeks!

It sounds like you have yourself a really healthy plan. I've tried low-fat in the past but I wasn't making 'healthy' low-fat options and without doing that, I just wound up eating too much sugar and too many calories. So, I decided to just count calories. I've lost 46 pounds in the past year and I'm stuck. Currently I'm attempting the Body for Life program but I think it may just be too strict for me... I'm thinking if I can't stick with it, I may just go back to counting calories, but this time I'm going to try to balance my diet as well.. by counting not only fat grams but carbs and protein as well. I'm part of a thread here called "doing it the old fashioned way." It is comprised mostly of calorie-counters but we also welcome other methods of 'counting' our way to a healthier weight. Feel free to stop by if you'd like to join in our conversations... :)

Thanks for writing. I did do the calorie counting option, about 3 years ago, had lost about 70 pounds, and was at a standstill, from there, I had joined the military, and went wild after basic training with my eating!! I recently got out, and I honestly feel much more stable with this option. I do weigh my calories, but the fat issue really made a difference for me. I used to eat alot of margarine/ used alot of cooking oils, and high fat cheeses and dressings.

Doing this eliminated that, and I have so much more energy!!I know different things pretty much work for different people. If anyone has other ideas, or is doing the same thing. Let me know how it is going!! I would appreciate your response

Well, this is something I may look back into... I am a WW client... But, last month I decided to step back a bit... Not saying I've given up on WW, but just need to stop the insantiy I build up when ever I would go and weigh in... two months ago I was .4 oz away from goal weight, then the next week I leaped up 10 pounds... Praise God, I did not panic, but I started to do some praying and thinking for myself... So far I am hanging in there between 160 and 167.. I want to venture out to low fat, lean meats, and whole foods for life... I just want to enjoy food, but not like before at 273. WW has through the grace of God, taught me sooooo much... :D This is truly a blessing... Exercise is an understanding I have now, and so that part isn't always easy, but I understand that before twice in my life of gaining back was due to no knowledge of nutrution/ label reading and complelely no exercise at all... I have eliminate a lot of old foods out of my life, fast foods, etc... Once ins a great while I'll go there, but that's because I've allowed it in my day...

So, I may try just the low/lean and whole foods way of life... God's earth is spacious... WW and I will, I think have a lasting relationship, but it's time for me to move on.

Wish me luck and say a prayer for me... :D

Denise... ;)

Hey Denise, I am there for you, if you need an uplift. I will pray for you, and help as much as I can! I understand that you are interested in this, and believe me it is a wise choice.

About the label reading, I had no idea about hydrogenated oils, until last month!! Hidden fats, that make people believe something that isnt true. You really have to read those labels, and know what is going into your body.

I am still adjusting, and I do have slip ups, but not as often as when I had did other eating plans. I just come right back, do my workout as soon as I wake up, and that's what motivates me.

What also helps, is coming here, writing to people, and hearing them tell how they are doing, or just giving encouraging word. So Denise, and Andrea, welcome!! Let's motivate eachother!! We can do this, and we won't go back!!

Andrea, how are you doing? I know you said you had just started. How is it coming along?

Anyone else who wants to join, may. Please do.. Have a wonderful day, stay positive!!!:)

Thank you!

Hey Andrea, just keep up the good work, and the weigh will come off!! I am still doing well. As for the sample menu, here is what I do.. In the morning, bkfast, I normally have some fresh fruit orange, apple banana, or grapes or something like that, low fat or no fat yogurt, whole wheat toast or bagel..if I have a bagel, then I have it with no fat cheese low fat meat, all toasted and yummy, if I have eggs, it is the egg beaters, I drink skim milk or a cup of juice , water. I have cereal sometimes, bran flakes or cream of wheat, or oatmeal. love it.

Lunch, consists of a sandwhich, light tuna, no fat mayo, salad fruit, and no fat dressing with salad, check for hydrogenated oils!!! I might take some french bread veggies, tomato sauce, no fat cheese, make a pizza, fruit, ( i eat alot of yogurt!!) Sometimes I take pasta, roast a chicken breast with no skin fat trimmed, in broth, make, and mix it up with diced tomatos, and seasonings yummy. sometimes I have rice and beans. always have some fruit, and veggies such as a salad, or grean beans, broccoli, carrots, squash, lots of high density grains!!

Dinner is pretty much like lunch, except it is normally pasta or rice with a veggie and fruit. I f I feel like snacking I will have a rice cake, or no fat pudding or fruit, or make one of susan powters recipes. the key is low fat, high denity foods, with moderate portions. Look at the labels, make sure it is under 30% I hope you get alot of information from this, and join us here!! If there is anything else you need to know I will be glad to help!! Also baked potatoes are good.. I use butter buds, and I just discovered a no fat margarine. still have to open it and try it, I am used to using broth instead and butter buds!! well take care..

As far as calories go, I dont count them strictly, I take a glance at them now and then.. I pretty much eat moderate servings, the goal for me is to keep it around 2,300 or so , but I have no problem doing that. So I really concentrate on the 30% of fat in everything I eat or less, I just check the labels. Another reason I am not strict on calories, is i generally dont have big hunger urges, The high density food really feels you up, and satisfies you well. Well that's it. Take care:)

Latisia

The key is, to listen to your body!!!

wow, i am impressed, you are doing great t-girl. i have tried this in the past and am scared to try again. there are just some things i cannot eat that are fat free, especially the cheeses. i guess i could go lowfat on them. i see there is alot of stuff to choose from. i know it can be done. another thing is , i hate math. i didnt feel like figureing out 30 % of fat that comes from everything i put in my mouth. is there an easy way to do it?? i know i can be so lazy sometimes, how do ya think i became overweight??? the only thing i have on susan powter is what ya got when you ordered it when she first came out. are there recent books out? what ones do you have???

Hi I have been on a low fat diet since March 2001. Other than having ym Gall Bladder out things have been great up until about 2 months ago. It's like I "broke the seal" I ate a few bites of Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream, something I have not done in so long and then I seemed to have eaten EVERYTHING I knew I wasn't supposed to be eating. Needless to say I have gained 10 lbs in about 2 months. I feel miserable, but I can't seem to stay away from junk food now. Here is the bottom line. In March of 2001 I weighed almost 260 lbs. I now weigh 155-160, but that 10 extra pounds is depressing me because I am so worried I am on the same path I was on almost my entire life. It all started after my Gall Bladder was removed, and that is one draw back to losing a ton of weight, but I would do it all over again if I had to. If you can give me any insperation it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Hello everyone, and here is my line for today, no one is perfect, take it day by day. If you mess up, the thing you must do, is come back to it the next day!! I have had days when I said, oh, my and ate and ate, Guess what I did, picked myself up, and came back. That is where I messed up before, and went back to the weight gains,, I am determined, you can be too!!

This isnt a diet, Let's call it a long term change of eating.

Willbethin: Here is how you calculate it( I hate math too, dont worry!!) You look at the label, look for calories per serving, and fat grams per serving. You know every gram of fat is 9 calories,
Multiply fat grams by 9. divide the total calories per serving into that. Example lets say the label says 100 calories per servin, and 3 grams of fat. Well, 9(number of calories per fat gram) times 3 the total fat grams per serving equals= 27, then you divide the 100 into the 27, you will get, .27, bring the decimal over to to make a percentage, 27%, that's all. Some books already have it figured out too. I can eyeball it now, and tell if it is too much, . I dont like having to make a diary out of what I am eating, I have to be free!! So I know what to eat, and not right now, and it has only been a month. Hey have you tried Kraft non fat cheese, I couldnt stand most of them either till I tried this, it is excellent. Use seasonings, broth, yummy. I really dont miss the fat. After a week or 2 your body adjusts, and it is even easier. I hope you the example helped, and it doesnt seem like much.

the books I have are, c'mon america let's eat. and Stop the Insanity, and Food, I want to get her exercise videos, Been doing my old one I have used before, Tae bo, and all. It really helped when I got her recipe book. It's up to you, if you feel you can moderate yourself, do it gradually though. This isnt something that can typically be done overnight, Sometimes I mess up, but I just start over again.

Jennifer, yep, I did lose that much, and it is a blessing:) I can feel myself getting closer to my goal.

Andrea, hey girl.. I am proud of you, do your thing.. !! How was your day? I did pretty good. Keeping myself busy.

Alzym, Jennifer, and Willbethin, welcome, !! We can all motivate eachother, weight loss is not an easy thing!! Hey Alzym, you can do it, you did it before just dont give up now, I am counting on you!! I believe that we all can do it!!:) Dont think that icecream is gonna stop you, it is in the past!! Just pick yourself back up, and keep going, Think healthy, and know, we are not perfect everyone messes up!! It ok,. Keep us informed, We can all help eachother!!

Well as I said earlier, did you see the plan I have for food from yesterday. Pretty much, I try my BEST to stay positive, and think one day at a time, If I do mess up, just come right back to it....

Eating, high density foods, such as rice,( long grain white rice, brown rice), I like pasta, (the whole wheat kind) veggies, all of them!! Fruit, whatever you like, meat, only lean, such as skinless chicken breast prepared in broth, with herbs/seasonings, baked, oven fried, turkey breast, very lean hamburger, very lean ground turkey. very lean sandwhich meat. bagels, I love wheat bagels. wheat bread, french bread, no fat shredded cheese ( kraft) I try to avoid alot of refined sugars, unbleached, wheat, flour..egg beaters are good. I snack on rice cakes, non fat puddings, and fig newtons!!. I cook with little to no oil, use the sprays. i make sauces from susan powter's c' mon america let's eat. and all her food pretty much, and invent my own. oatmeal, cream of wheat, for breakfast ( I know I havent mentioned it all, just going off the top of my head I dont normally write it.. )

Exercise, is Monday, weight, tuesday aerobics, walking and tae bo, wed, weights, thurs walking and tee go or kathy ireland, fri , is weights again, then i take sat or sunday off, do one day of aerobics and start the week over.

I weigh myself normally, once a week. The key is control, and try to avoid empty calories from "white" carbohydrate, white flour. and things prepared soley with white flour, alot of sugars( added sugars;) concentrated on high density foods as I mentioned they will fill you up, unlike the other ones from white flour and sugar. Stay focused, think long term, believe in yourself, you have control, not the food. Is there anything else I missed, You saw how to determine fat grams, try to keep it at 30% or lower, and you dont have to write down all your foods, just keep it in mind to be high density, and low fat. , you will learn what is good for your body, and not. You wont even have as many urges as before, if you stick to this. Well if you have any more questions, let me know, ok. I hope this is a good write up of it. Take care . Good night everyone

Latisia;)

I do not mind it at all, I just wanted to make a few more pointers. been doing some thinking today. Figured out a few things about binge eating. Pretty much, if you dont consume enough food, you are going to binge eat, That is why you must listen to your body. I am guilty of doing this a few times, and that is why I did mess up those times.

Also, for those who do come, and collect iformation here, remember, if you are going to reduce your fat, do it the right way!! Eat foods high in fiber, such as wheat products, Avoid eating a whole lot of empty calories that white flour and sugar provide!! You can do it because you are in control!!! Eat until satisfied but eat the right thing... your body will thank and reward you.

Stay strong!!

guys, i decided to go with the richard simmons foodmover. when i was on this before i was hungry and irritable, but i am prepared to deal with that now. it is just what i need, it is lowfat, tells me how much i should be eating from each food group and the calories are already added up. it is simple, now i just have to do my part and stick with it. i have to also remember if i have a bad day, I CAN NOT QUIT!!!!!!!! i have to realize this is a life style change and it is going to take time. i have to be patient. so i may be posting back on the richard simmons board as well as here.

geez, between all this board hopping i do around here, you would have thought i would lose some weight:lol: thanks again guys. i am starting my new life tomorrow, wed, april 17.

:^: Hey T-gIRL, I think your'e right about eating lowfat. I've started eating lowfat also. The Program I'm on is called First Place. It teaches you to eat a lowfat balanced diet based on exchanges, used by the diabetic diets. So far i've lost 17lbs. since the third week in january, on this program. Overall i've lost 28lbs.
Exercise 5 days a week. We have a support program within our group. It also includes a 10 weeks of bible study, which teaches us to put Christ first in our lives and that there's other things to live for besides food. Anyway it's a great program that a person could learn to make a lifestyle change by. See Ya

Hi everyone. Mind if I join you all? I was thinking of doing low-fat, low-cal for awhile now and thought I'd go for it. I never really ate that much fat to begin with but thought I might just start watching to see. I never add extra butter or mayo to anything I cook. I do have a quick question for you all. Do you still watch the calories you eat? I mean, you can eat a bag of sugar which has no fat but still a lot of calories. What exactly do you do? T-girl, I love Tae-Bo. What tapes do you have? I have the basic live and want to get the advanced live. How long do you all exercise for? It just seems to me that 30 minutes is too short to get good results. I don't know. I wonder why processed flours are all so bad anyway. Is it because it contains no nutritional value or is there an underlying reason for it like it makes you gain or something like that. Do you count carbs too? You guys seem really supportive and motivational. Congrats to all of your weight loss. All the numbers are amazing. I hope I can end up where you are all today!! tHANKS!!

I don't mean to get into the middle of things here but I had two comments about your post, Darmah . . .

When I started dieting over a year ago, all I did was keep my calories under 1600 and exercise 2-3x a week for 20-30 minutes and the weight dropped right off. I think as long as the 30 minutes is high enough in intensity, it does the job! :) (and if that doesnt convince you, a year earlier I started walking 2-3x a week about 30 min each .. moderate-intensity.. and ate as I normally did and 10 pounds dropped off!)

Processed carbs, from what I understand, more easily turn into sugars in your body. Basically your body can break them down much more quickly so its almost the same as eating pure sugar!

Just my 2 cents :)

That makes me feel better about not exercising three hours a night. Now I know that 30 minutes will still make an impact on my loss. I knew that processed flours were bad, but not how bad. I always enjoyed wheat products anyway so it's all good. Now about those twinkies..... Just kidding. Twinkies=bad. You know fitday is awesome!! I've always used it but never really looked too closely at the other numbers besides calories. Luckily though, my fat intake has always been low. Anyway, have a great day everyone!

Sorry I hadnt been on earlier, had to do a few things baby teething ac. order and such.

THanks Silence for the advice;) Very good. I agree with you too. I do the Basic Tae bo, and I walk, normally 20 or 30 minutes. I have lost weight with just one half hour exercises before, When I do strenght training I try to work all the major muscles in maybe 30 minutes, sometimes it may take longer.

As far as the processed flour, it is true that it has no nutritional quality and ends up sugar, or empty calories. just as Silence said! Also, as you know sugar is quickly absorbed, so it doesnt give you much of a satiety, or fullness, which wheat products do. THat is because they have a closer make towards its natural state, and have fiber, which is good for you, and fills you up.

Do you have SUsan Powters book stop the insanity, if not let me give you the information on calories by how I do it, It goes by weight and activity level, such as me, I try to eat around 2.000 calories a day, as long as I do my workouts. which i do!!
according to what is said, the lowest amount of calories for one on a low fat diet should be i,120, if you weigh 100 pounds and are sedentary.. Darmah, what is your activity level and weight, if you want, I will look it up for you and tell you. I do not follow the calories, thing to a te, it gives me more control.. I eyeball my meals and go, that will pass.. Once again WELCOME DARMAH>>>!!! Keep us informed ok, we will help you !! Ask all the questions you need to keep you informed as well.

Andrea, dont worry about that weight gain, try to glance back and see what may have caused it, and keep going. You can do it!! How did you do today??

Willbethin, Jenny, hello hope to hear from you all soon, and Silence, you are very much to the point!! Thanks and come again, I appreciate all your information you put out... :)

I did pretty good today, my son is better, I will be on earlier tomorrow to put out some words/ answer questions.. Whoever else wants to join, dont be shy, come on in!!

I weigh 140 right now and am very inactive. Until recently when I picked up running/walking and rollerblading and tae-bo. Even though I only eat 1200 cals a day, I still gain if I go over that. I don't know why. My metabolism is all out of wack. I'm small framed too so maybe that's it. I think that everyone is different in the amount of cals a person can take in. Books and research can't determine one's individual magic number, ya know? Everyone is different. I do notice that when I eat wheat products I feel fuller than when I have white flour products. Must be the fiber thing.

If there was one good motivational diet book I should read, what would you guys recommend? There's SO many out there I can't read them all!! How is everyone anyway? I hope we're all sticking to this new way of eating and being successful and sticking to it full steam ahead!

Hope everyone is doing great and I'll check in tomororw!!

I am with you on that, but that was where I started, but if you are small framed 1200 sounds right.. She actually said I should eat more than 2000, but I dont, like I told you I eyeball it, and listen to my body, and the results!!!! So, try to eyeball it, and see if it works with the low fat. I hope it does. Stop the Insanity! is very motivating, as is FOod. I know, there really are so many books!! it is unending. I j ust read th ose, and none since, except recipe books.. Do you cook much?? No pun intended, but I looked in this book under calories, and it says for your lifestyle, ans weight, 1200 is just about on point!! you might wanna try this book. ( just dont mind the personal tidbits that kinda come up sporadically..) How much more did you want to lose?? We are here for you. I also hope everyone is sticking to their changes!! You all can do it, one day at a a time!!

Hey everyone. Latisia, I'll look up those two books. They sound helpful. I'm having a bit of a problem today. It's 7 pm and I only have another 200 calories to go until I reach my limit. I was STARVING after school and downed the first things in site. a.k.a. a hamburger. I actually intentionally went into a gas station to walk out with a donut but stayed strong, and walked out with a diet Mountain Dew instead. I was SOO close to getting some pizza flavored, cheese flavored, processed, caloric gas-station-ey snack but stood my ground and got the pop. Score one for me!! But, of course, when I got home, that burger was just waiting for me and I couldn't resist. Could you imagine if I did have that donut AND the hamburger??? Geez, the power of semi-self-control. I've decided for dinner, I'm just gonna have 1/4 cabbage, sauted, and a slim fast snack bar to close out the day. Wish me luck. I'll make it. But good news!! Most of my water weight from my last binging fiasco has gone down. I gained 10 pounds of water weight in two days. Now I'm back down to 133ish. 3 more to go until I'm back to square one. Which is a better place to be than square 3. If that makes sense.
I love to cook, by the way, but never have too much time to. I'm thinking of buying a crap load of frozen lean cuisines and storing those for when I don't have time to cook. I'm also a real cheapo and don't like buying ingredients that I'll only use for one meal, you know? IT's gotta be a well-rounded veggie to be bought  :smug:

I don't work out my abs at all. Used to though. I should restart that. But I did hear that working them out everyday won't give you better results than taking a break in between days. Your ab muscles are just like any other muscle in that they need time to recuperate and heal. They did studies that people that took breaks got better results than those that didn't. It could just be a bunch of bologna though. Just do what's best for you and if you're comfortable doing it everyday, go for it. I just don't have the willpwer to take time to lay down and whip out a couple crunches.

Hope everyone is having a great day. Wish me luck on the rest of mine. If all else fails, I'll go to sleep really early. You can't eat when you're sleeping!

Oy. Weekends suck. I've mentioned this to all that I've talked to today while my belly is busting from its pants. What's wrong with me? I know that I'm miserable when I binge. I know that I;ll gain 10 opunds in two days when I binge. I know that I'll feel sick if I binge. And what do I do??? I binge. Atleast I'm not soo sick I"m throwing up. But I'm getting there. I just get so stressed on weekends, it's just never fun. Most people look forward to saturday. Not I, my friends, not I. I fear Saturday, because I know that I will lose my rationality and sense, and end up stuffing my belly. It's all been ice cream and cake for my binge today and it won't seem to stop. And I gotta wait til monday before I restart because I have a weird thing about starting on Sundays. That just throws your whole week off. If I did that sleeping thing today when I sleep after I'm done with 1200 calories, I would've been asleep my 3:00 this afternoon. I'd sit underneath my desk at work and sleep until the next morning. Not too comfy at all. I vow to you all and to myself that this weekend is it. No more binges. No more cheat days like I had planned. THe cheat day just beat me by a day today. Fast little suckers. No more excuses. No more bad things. Only good things will fill my life and void. Only good things will make me (us) happy. Only good things will help me (us) acheive my (our) goals. Can I get an AMEN?? I'm going to church tomorrow. And praying for some strength. Now... I'm not a strong christian. Just started going to church actually. I'd like to join the church but don't have the time for all that work and effort. Maybe one day. But one goal at a time. I gotta concentrate on this one first. Why, oh, why!! The agony. Sorry to bring the thread down (with my weight). But any encouraging words of advice would be soo great. You all are wonderful and supportive and thank goodness I have all you guys to tell my woes to. Have a great weekend everyone. I'll try to finish mine in one piece!

Hi! I'm so sorry I haven't been here in a couple of days - my Roadrunner connection has been acting freaky.

Well, I am officially starting my healthier eating plan today! After some of you suggested that I eat at least 1,200 calories to avoid any slowing of metabolism problems, I will do just that.

I weighed in this morning at 237.5 pounds. I am getting married June 29th and can't quite fit into my wedding dress - yikes!!! - but I'm hoping to lose 20 pounds by then.

A food discovery: Have any of you tried those Vegetarian Sausage Patties from Morningstar Farms? They can be found in most grocery stores from what I've seen. They're delicious (in my opinion anyway)!!!! I had two of them (160 cals. and 20 grams of protein) with a slice of cheese (60 cals) on a slice of light white bread (40 cals) and it was very good - kinda like a sausage biscuit from McDonald's. Their Vegetarian Chicken Patties are also very good!!

Oh well, I'm off - take care!!

Jennifer

hey everyone, I am on early, got up early couldnt go back to sleep,, well Darmah, you can do it, It takes awhile for your body to adjust, just get right back on Monday, dont give up!! Try to figure out exactly what triggers the binges, is it not enough calories, something you ate? For me, it was I needed more calories, and more activties, and no doritos, etc in the house, After that, I have been fine, plus my body took about a month to adapt enough for the binges to cease....

Jenny, hey girl!! glad to have you back!!I will have to check those sausages out, also have been wondering about veggie burgers, which ones are best, and low fat??Anyone know..? you can lose those extra plans for the wedding , just believe it, and you will do it, stay positive stay hydrated, especially in the heat!! You sound very motivated, and that's great!!

ANdrea, hey girl!! how ya been!! Dont give up !! Like I say, if you mess up, it can always be corrected, just pick yourself back up everyone!! We will conquer this!!

Talk to you all later, just came from my walk, I feel pretty good, just need a bath now..lol...

I just need to keep myself motivated. i thought that seeing loss would motivate me but it actually turned me towards food even more. Thanks for the pep talk. I've now come to realize that by cheating, I only build on that and cheat some more. So. From now on, I'm not gonna cheat throughout the week, and if I do good, then on Sunday, I'll have a good meal like Perkins or something like that. I'm ready to make this a committment. And I have the power over the food! Sorry for the short post but I gotta get to class!! Have a wonderful day!

i love the morningstar "chick nuggets" my daughter even likes them. i did try the saugage, they are pretty good too, and i actually stopped eating them when i went into my high protien plan, and i really missed them.

hope everyone is being "good" today and eating within our limits.

What's the difference in watching 30% of fat or counting fat grams? What is the recommended fat grams per day to lose weight. Do you still need to count calories?

Thanks

t-girl
04-23-2002, 11:24 PM
Hey everyone!! How are you doing, Hello and welcome back willbethin, I was looking for those sausages, some of these stores, dont have much of what I need!! I will look in the commisarry, bet they have it!! You can do it girl, dont let one messed up day, totally mess you up,. you are doing great!! ok.. Hey ANdrea, glad to hear about the loss!! Keep it up, you will be just fine.. WelcomeRoseS.. Let me answer that question, if you calculate 30% or less, of everything you eat, then you will not go over in fat grams, because it calculates the entire percentage of what you eat, If you count fat grams, you should try to stay under 30 grams a day, or so, I dont do this, because it is more tedious, and would cause me to probably feel like I cant eat anything, and thus, mess up!! I just eat 30%, as I had said previously in this thread, calories, the main thing, with low fat eating is to eat enough, so that you wont end up feeling starved, and binging... I try to just eat til I am satisfied, It is reccomended for me, at my weight to eat around 2000 which is what I try to do, I f you exercise alot, you can eat more, I really just listen to my body, and I never seem to get it wrong by doing that. I cannot stand to count calories, fat grams, etc. I just listen to my body, check the labels for the amount of fat per serving, If I dont already have it memorized!! and go from there.. I have not gained a single pound since I started this!! I am a big loser!! over 20 pounds so far, will let you know exactly how much on Saturday!!

How are ya doing Darmah, Jenny???If anyone else has questions ask on, and if you need support, come on in! Welcome RoseS!! I hope this helped, what are you planning to try, this plan??

Goodnight everyone,, be back later..

Latisia:)

t-girl
04-23-2002, 11:27 PM
It all comes out the same, meant to mention this too.. BUT, if you just do your percentage of the servings, it is simpler, quicker, and to me more effective. I f you want, you can add up all your calories, and then, count up the fat grams and calculate the percentage....Well that is an addition to what I said, I just check my servings if I dont know already, and go on...

Latisia

RoseS
04-23-2002, 11:52 PM
Thanks for the information. I will try the percentage which means I can't have my cinnamon coffee mate that I just discovered and love. It's 2 or 3 grams of fat/40 cal. per serving but I figure over 30%. Oh well!

I have about 140 pounds to lose so I hope this will work. I tried ww and really hate counting points or calories for that matter, so I hope this is much easier. I need to figure what I can eat for meals and I'll be fine.

t-girl
04-24-2002, 12:00 AM

Today is my second day and dropped 2 pounds. This is actually very easy to do so I'm crossing my fingers that it works for me. I'm not going over 30% rather than counting fat grams but I almost feel I may not be getting enough fat since there are so many fat free products. I also watch the sugar since it can be stored as fat also.

Kashi is a dry cold cereal. It's a lot cheaper at Trader Joes.

Hi all!

When will I learn?? Sorry I haven't been here for a few days, but I briefly made my 100th venture into the land of low carbing. LOL Athough it's an effective plan, I'm sure, sometimes I wish I had never heard of it or read any books about it. Why? Because the science behind it sounds so great - keep your carbs low and your body will get to burning your fat stores faster. BUT.....I'm just not a big protein eater. I enjoy my oatmeal, my sandwiches, etc. But the minute I'm on a regular "calorie-controlled" plan, I'm obsessed with the thought, "Maybe I should be on a low carb plan....it will be more effective."

So why did I think I would love low carbing this time around? Well, I didn't and I ended up just clowning around this week.

Do any of you get hungry between meals or especially at night? I need to learn to make friends with hunger, that empty feeling in my tummy. I guess I'm so used to feeling stuffed for the past 5 years that I'm not used to what it feels like to be "unstuffed!"

Anyhow, tomorrow, I am going back on the plan I SHOULD be on.....just regular ol'sensible eating. How's everyone else doing?

T-girl, you still dropping those pounds like wildfire?? How much have you lost so far? It hink you've only been on your plan for 3 or 4 weeks and you've already lost 20 pounds or so, right?? Wow!!!!

hi tgirl and all, you sound like you have been really controlling your eating in the last 6 weeks, i know you will have a good weigh in. i lost 2 lbs this week, just trying to eat less make healthier choices and say no, to seconds and thirds.

now it is time i work on myself from the inside out, i have ordered the book get with the program with bob green, from oprah s show. i really have to dig down deep and take a good look at myself and try to figure out why i cant lose this weight. it is not a diet book, it is all about changing your lifetstyle gradually, not all at once, but little changes each day. i told my hubby i wanted the book for my birthday, i think it may be the greatest birthday gift i give myself. iwill let ya know how i am doing. i should get it today.

hope everyone is hanging in there. have a great day.

Hi Jenny
I've been dieting and making a lifestyle change since the third week in Jan. 2002. Yes at first you get hungry in between meals. The longer you go the more you get used to it. I mainly get hungry before the evening meal, because there's a longer period of time in between meals. So I have a snack then. The nutrionalist leading my First Place group says it's natural to get hungry in between meals. Make sure you drink plenty of water, it helps make you fuller. I also read that sometimes feeling hungry is a way your body tells it needs water. Don't know how true, but the water does help me.

Thanks everyone for the info on Kashi, I'll look up the site in a few minutes to find out more
I've lost 3lbs more this week and weigh in sunday night. Congraduations to all on your loss, and keep up the good work. Rember the Lord promises to give us all the power we need to do what's in HIs will. He does want us to be healthy and happy.

I recently tried the new Kashi "GoLean Crunch" cereal and it's great!! It's high in protein and in fiber and tastes very similar to -believe it or not - Sugar Smacks cereal (in my humble opinion). I like the "Good Friends" cereal somewhat, but find that I need to mix it with something like yogurt, since it's a bit on the bland side.

I've never tried this Kashi stuff? Why Kashi and not other brands of cereal? Does it have something others don't? Well, so far the weekend has not gotten off on the right foot. I've overdone my cals yet again, but not my too much. By 300 calories, to be exact. So I figure that if I don't eat anymore tonight and take it out of the tally tomorrow then I should even out. But it is now 6 pm and I haven't had supper or anything. I guess the high-calories are my fault. I had 3 too many cookies. :smug: Ooops? But I should do fine. THis is the first weekend in a long time that I haven't lost complete control. The thought is running through my head though. You know, the little devil on my right shoulder is saying "You've already blown it today. GO for the gold!!" And the angel on my left is saying, "You didn't too too bad, just watch yourself and you'll make it through all right". I'm trying to block out the devil but he's speaking so loudly... :smug: Don't worry. I'll make it. I'm thinking of just taking a nap just to keep myself from eating. When in doubt, go take a nap. :D I'm still kinda sick, though (acchooo). What timing. Anyway. Hope everyone has a better weekend than I do. I'm sure you'll all do so well!!

Hey all
I've been busy today, and haven't been able to get on the computer. Went to a wedding shower today. I didn't even eat any cake. Just few nuts and some punch. Also went to store and my son asked for a doughnut (I love doughnuts, who doesn't) and I was able to buy him one without it bothering me. I've done well this week . I'll weigh in tomorrow night. Think I've lost 5lbs.
:smug:

Willbethin, I was rereading your post a couple of days ago about watching your eating seconds and third helping. One thing I have learned is to be sure to drink a glass of water before your meals, and to take at least 20 min. to eat. It takes 20min. to feel full from the first servings.

Can someone tell me how much kashi costs when bought at walmart, or other grocery store chain ?

Everyone keep up the good work, and keep your spirits high. If you goof:^: just start over right then don't even wait til tomorrow.

thanks for the tip betty. hi all, none of us are giving up and that is the most important thing. i got my get with the program book, but i know i will be setting myself of for failure again, unless i really wait till monday to give it all my attention and follow the book exactly. it is my birthday weekend( need i say more) went out with my girlfriend on friday night and too many drinks, then on sat i went out with father-in-law for a killer italian dinner and now today i have to go to the olive garden with mother in law. i an not pigging out, i am just trying to stay in control. after i get started on get with the program i know i will be able to control these kinds of occasion when they come up. i have read some of the book and definitly know it is a book i needed and a program that is real doable. it is just gonna take alot of patience. hope everyone survived the weekend. betty, good job on controlling yourself on the doughnuts and the wedding.

Hi All
Thanks for the encouragement. One thing i've noticed is how nice and supportive everyone is at this site. Hope to do the same.
Yeah:smug: , I'm really on a roll right now my mind is always set on what i'm trying to accomplish. When i go out to eat, i'm focused on what is the best thing for me to eat to stay within my range.
I'm excited, yesterday i tried on a of 14 jeans. I got them on but snug around the waste. Not bad since I was going to have to buy size 20 the next pair of jeans i bought, had i not decided to loose it. I have lost before, but didn't make a lifestyle change to keep it off.

Happy Birthday Willbethin:hb:

Andrea, I weigh in the morning, but usually weigh before i go to my meetings to compare the two scales. I did put a new battery in mine last week. Don't know if that made a difference or not.

Hi t-girl, You all encourage me as well. Are you doing the advanced tae bo ?:jig: I've started last week doing the advanced one. You surely have to work up to it, to get all the moves and to keep up.:o It really makes me hot & sweaty. I do strenght and flexability the other two days. We have a total gym that i use.

This week series of bible study is focused on commitments.
Our verse this week to memorize is "It is better not to make a vow than to make a vow and not to fullfil it. Ecc. 5:5

My Diet Plan.
I have all together about 200 ounces of water a day.Breakfast- BreadLunch- Tuna sandwhichSnack- Tuna SandwhichPre-Dinner- Little plate of spaghettiDinner- Rice and Chicken and VegatablesAnd i might have a grahm cracker...I also have gumThats my day, its about 1500-1700 Calories and lots of Carbs and Protein. Alot of people tell me I should be eating 2500-3000 Calories cause of the amount of exercise I am doing but if I do that I wont lose weight. My Goal is to lose 43 pounds by September.....

diamondgeog
05-05-2002, 11:37 AM
Andrea,

If you want to lose weight, burn up more calories then you eat, simple as that. As long as you are eating healthy and eating enough to maintain a good metabolic rate and are not hungry, there is no reason to eat 2500 to 3000 calories. One of the wonderful things I have found about exercising is that I don't feel more hungry after I exercise. Therefore, I am getting my body going, getting my metabolism and circulation working better, burning calories, of course, and NOT eating more. Eating more would kinda defeat part of the purpose of my exericsing wouldn't it? Especially if one of the goals was weight loss. I believe in eating good food when hungry and not eating when not hungry, keeping in mind to always be getting enough water so that I am not eating when I am actually thirsty. I do not calorie count. So counting to get up to a certain amount of calories makes as little sense, probably less sense to me then counting to not go above a certain amount of calories.

andreaphilip3

diamondgeog
05-05-2002, 01:05 PM
I mean unless you were a very, very tall lady 2500-3000 calories wouldn't make sense. It makes more sense for a guy.

05-05-2002, 01:57 PM
yea but that much activity is a disorder

diamondgeog
05-05-2002, 02:12 PM
A couple of things, he said he worked different muscles so lifting everyday is ok if you do that. Also it was 3 mins of jumproping and one hour of shooting hoops. At first I thought he said 1 hr of jumproping which IS sick. Shooting hoops is good but not excesive exercise. It is a lot of exercise but not a disorder :-) I am sure almost anything can be overdone and exericse certainly is one of them, but it doesn't seem that execisve.

Hey everyone, oh Andrea, I didnt know you were referring to someone else (should have known though) I do agree with Larry and you, that his activity is extremely high, and he does need more calories. Yes you do have to burn what you make, but you also need fuel to survive, and thus have a sensible workout.

How are you doing today, I know you dont like having to go to the gym so late, neither would I .. SOmetimes depending on how my son is doing, I have to wait til late..

Larry nice to have you up here, surprised to see you posting. do appreciate all your responses, I remember going to your thread, and you have done real well with losing all that weight. Do come back again!!!I

Hi, everyone.

Been really busy the last few days. Friday morning left for a Women's retreat at a baptist church camp. Eleven women from my church went. We had a really good time, except for not getting enough sleep.:dizzy:
Well I had my weigh in tonight only lost 1/2 lbs this week , but considering that I had 2 slices of pizza friday for lunch i did ok. Anyway I think I deserved it since I haven't strayed very much at all from my plan. I look at it this way, everyone needs a treat once in awhile, as long as it isn't too often:nono: .
T-girl, how's the tae bo going ? It takes a few days to catch on to all those moves. I'm still working on them, but getting better evertime.:sheep:
Here we go starting a new week, Hope everyone has a good week. Be strong and God Bless, bye for now

Hello everyone... Well, I have not lost anything, I may have gained a few pounds but I believe with help from God, I'll become better and better at things..

I'm re-adjusting I guess... But I feel less stressed out not having to count points and paying just to weight in... Not giving up on WW and what I was blessed to learn. I just needed to step back and take a different approach to shedding the pounds...

I'm not where I was and I'm not where I want to be, but I have more knowledge, I'm healthy and slimmer than before... I'm working on who I am and trying to love me from within, along with trying to stay lean and healthy.

God is the greatest. :smug:

Hi Swan

You have the right attitude. You might check out a christian based program. I'm on one called "first place". It teaches us to put God first and to rely upon HIm for our strenght and needs. As well as nutrition. You can find out more at the web site, www.firstplace.org. I'll look that up to be sure that's the right address, if not I'll post it later.

hello all! Welcome Mom!! I love sweets too, and my only alternated was too find low fat foods that were also yummy, and watch my portions when I eat them, Do you like rice cakes, they have some sweet ones?? Plus, I have susan powters cookbook, that has excellent sweets!! As far as exercise. I know it must be hard, but there are little exercised you can do a coulple minutes at a time, and still make a workout, I think I saw some in one of Denise Austin's book.. like do wall pushups, squats, leg benders,, she had stuff like that.. Well please come back , and let us know if this is any help.

Hi Everyone!

I am new to this forum.

I know the current empahasis on on low-carbing, but after much research, after knowing what worked for me in the past, after lowcarbing, lowcaloring, food exchanging and whatever, I am finally returning to what worked best for me years ago, and what gave me great health...a LOW FAT DIET.

For me that means counting fat grams, because I tried the percentage of fat method and I tried fat grams, and I like the fat gram method (more food variety).

I do love Susan Powter though. I just did some research on the internet to see if she's still around, and according to a 2000 article in a Minneapolis newspaper, she's alive and well, and divored again, living in Minneapolis and teaching at a fitness center. I sure wish she'd be more high profile and write more cookbooks. Her recipes are so excellent.

I am using as my bible a few books on low fat eating: T-Factor Diet (revised and updated edition), Eating by the Book, and Big Fat Lies.

Unfortunately, I gave away a lot of good low fat cookbooks, but I hope to resume my collection. I love to cook and eat!

This is a great board and a great topic. It's just too bad low fat eating is falling by the wayside lately, in lieu of the low carbo thing. You know you can still be a gourmet, yet cook low fat!

I've tried them all, and if you avoid sugars and a lot of white flour products, low fat eating really works!

Latisia,

In the late 80's I lost a lot of weight just by lowering my fat intake ( counting fat grams), and avoiding sugars and a lot of white flour.

Then in the 90's I got lazy, went off, gained back weight and the rest is history. I tried every diet there is, the last being low carb, and I've finally realized that the greatest health I ever had, and the easiest way of "dieting" I ever did, was just reducing fat. I didn't count calories or anything, I just counted fat grams (T Factor Diet).

I now know that this will be it for the rest of my life. Counting fat grams is easy and works for me.

I have a few really good books on the subject.

I've lost 30 pounds so far and will be quite happy to just lose 5 more. But I'm in no rush. I lose very slowly because I eat a lot of food. Probably could lose faster if I limited my food intake, but the deprivation just isn't worth it to me. Sometimes I lose 1/2 pound a week, sometimes I lose 1 pound in a month. Sometimes I don't lose. It doesn't matter. This is really for my health in the end. It's a way of life I will maintain forever, so I'm really in no big rush.

Also, I should mention I don't exercise, which is just awful. I just ordered an exercise book called The Spark off Amazon.com, which is a well-rounded program I can live with. Needless to say, if I exercised the weight would probably just drop off! I am really motivated to start an exercise program, just for my health alone.

hello all

hope we are all op today:) i am, but took a minor detour at dinner, but im ok.

ny gal

i used to count fat grams, now i sorta do but dont keep exact track. i try to cut back on lotsa starch&eat lean protein&veggies& since i cant stand low fat products exceppt ff miracle whip, i save my g for full fat products so my grams add up fast, but im ok with that.
