Default Onion ring vent...

So I ate three onion rings with my lunch today, a little food craving - haven't had them in ages... Used about 100 calories and 10 grams of fat to have them, based on the nutrition info for a full order... So now, my fingers feel greasy, my tummy is all rumbly and I have heartburn... Silver lining, maybe next time I won't crave them!

Definitely a silver lining there.

But, you did take care of your craving in a very responsible way. I say that's a win!

I've made baked ones...but they're breaded, not battered, which means you have to use something to bind the breading to the onion. I usually use egg, but I wonder if you could use yogurt or something similar...

Anyone wanna experiment?

Good for you for enjoying them responsibly!

Not so good about the tummy rumbling and heartburn though. Fried foods do that to me too. I have them very rarely now.

I'd bet yogurt would be good or maybe buttermilk? I make breaded "fried" tofu fingers (cheaper then chicken and I like it) that way, but I use egg for that as well.

Hrm. I don't have an onion right now and the trip to the farmer's market is scheduled for tomorrow, but I'll see what I can find. Buttermilk would probably be excellent. I'll experiment a bit and see what I can come up with.

I had a 1/2 a Sonic burger the other night and felt the same way. Your body def. gets used to not having that much grease and *stuff* and reacts differently after you eat it.

Kinda nice though, to not crave the junk cause you know it'll make you feel icky.

I def agreee with all of that. greasey foods tend to make me feel sick after i eat them now. So does really sweet stuff. I tried 2 bites of one of those Hershey Pies from Burger King the other night and i thought i was going to be really sick. Oh man i used to love those things, but needless to say i really do not care for them an longer, lol.

I love onion rings and i am thinking about experimenting with that too. Maybe using wheat bread crumbs and buttermilk. hmmmmmmmm.

I'm going to try buttermilk and Club multigrain cracker crumbs with salt and pepper. I'm going to really grind the crackers up fine in the food processor.

I'll tell you guys how it turns out.

Hrm. What kind of onion, though? I was thinking red because of how sweet they get when cooked.

You could use "Egg Beaters" for binding the crumbs. It's basically egg white. I love onion rings and only have them for extremely special occasions. A&W rings are a favorite of mine but any kind will do. I might try baking them with Egg Beaters. I have some in the frig and onions are a staple item in my cupboard.

If I were going to try this (and I might this weekend) I'd do some kind of egg dip and panko bread crumbs. Panko tends to stay crunchier when baked and I like really crunchy onion rings.

Hmmmm. I feel an experiment coming on.
