I have been doing the tofu shiratiaki- and love it, however I was wanting to have some spaghetti tonight with DF but didn't- I had stirfry instead... the shirataki is definitely better asian style!
quionia is a grain like substance that is full of protein. cooks like rice in about 20 minutes. I get it at trader joes but a health food store would probably have it too.
I have pasta rarely. When I do it's whole wheat and I either load it up with veggies, have it as a side dish, or use in a cold pasta salad, especially with tuna. In any case, it's a small serving and it's only 1-2 times a month, some months. But for me personally, pasta is not a must have food.
Quinoa - I have found this in my regular grocery store in the aisle with rice. I think it's also in the aisle with the healthy foods. You may want to check there before making a trip to a specialty store.

Reason: To make it clear the pasta I do it is whole wheat
I use Whole Foods store brand whole wheat pasta, "365." I'm not crazy about whole wheat pasta, but this brand tastes fine. If I had to choose between ww pasta and ww bread, I'd pick the bread.

I agree, that is one of the milder tasting ones. A very good choice for those just cutting their teeth on ww pasta.
I wasn't a fan of it at first, but find that I now rather enjoy the nutty flavor that it brings....kind of like brown rice.
We love whole wheat pastas. I sometimes use Hodgson Mills, Heartland or the store brand. I have ordered off the Hodgson Mills website to get some of the harder to find shapes as well as some of their flours. Often I will make a pasta dish with veggies in it and then add extra veggies for me.
I bought some hodgsonmills angel hair tonight. I used to LOVE ww pasta when I was a kid... my mom always ate healthy! but haven't had it in forever! I will probably try a bit either tomorrow at lunch or maybe next week- we'll see! Thanks everyone!
UPDATE: I had some last night and it was good- although i had put it with a lot of spices and lots of veggies with tofu in an asian dish... Not sure if it was the sodium or ww pasta but I felt like a balloon after and this morning and am up 2lbs. I know I didn't actually gain 2lbs in a day however, looks like I will be sticking to the shirataki for a while instead- at least till my wedding!!! I am going to have to agree with everyone that it may be a once in a month or two treat for me!
I love trader joe's store brand whole wheat pasta, it's by far the best in terms of texture and taste, and it's so cheap!
I've also seen these whole grain omega 3 pastas, and they're tasty, but I don't think they're 100% kosher for SBD. Looks like they've got some flours in there that could be trouble.
One trick for pasta is use a lot less pasta than you want, and load the pasta with veggies and other chunky items- that way you still feel like you're eating pasta, but you're eating more veggies and protien, which is what you want.

Reason: Additional pasta tip...
one way to make that small amount of pasta seem like a whole bunch (at least with spaghetti) is to make a very hearty sauce. We load ours with ground turkey, tons of veggies (3 different kinds of peppers, onions, garlic, carrots, zucchini, broccoli)...
