Good Morning and welcome to our new chat thread for the new season. Although Autumn does not officially start until the 22nd, Labour Day weekend always seems to be the real start for some reason. So . . .
:welcome: to the DIETING WITH DIABETES seasonal support/chat thread! This is the place to check in regularly, share and receive support, and get to know one another. Lets encourage one another all we can as we live day to day with this disease.
We are glad you are here! If you are a newbie, please feel free to join right in! And don't forget to go an add a bio in the Getting to Know You thread up in the Sticky area.

Good morning! Labour Day always feels like the start of a new year to me. I guess I spent too long in school.
Well, my tester bit the dust over the weekend for sure. I hope it's just the battery which is easy to replace. Perhaps it's just as well because the past few weeks have not been good weeks - too much company and partying.
Back on track today for sure and have my meals planned for the week. Now to execute the plan!

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
Me too, RUTH, me too . . . . . . I'm so 'old-fashioned' the first thing I did this morning was change purses -- no white after labour day , you know -- :p Hey, don't worry about the batteries, just get a whole new glucometre -- somebody is always doing a special where you get the machine free just for buying the test strips.
August was not one of my better months . . . no movement of the ticker will be happening . . . hey, could be worse at least it stays the same. Unfortunately the BGL is still following the same nasty pattern of being high in the am and then dropping very nicely by dinner.
Had a really strange freak storm yesterday (nothing like the hurricanes pounding some areas, of course, but bad enough that you couldn't see to drive). I was in Walmart when it arrived and they took a generator hit so they were rushing everybody through cash and out of the store while their emergency power was still working. I still did a couple of other stops (hey, I was soaked anyway) on my way home and was completely wet, cold, and miserable at the end. The storm continued to rage all night and now it is actually sunny, even though the forecast is for more rain. :dizzy: Just have to wait and see.
Nothing much going on for me today, anyway . . . hope the rest of you can keep things moving and shaking . . . :carrot:

Hello Everyone!
The weather here is iffy -- for the most part it is warm (90 degrees F), but we see clouds and are awaiting some of the residuals from Gustav in the next couple of days.
I went to the store today to get some pants in a new size. They had great specials going on and I had some discount coupons, so I barely spent anything! The pants are still a bit snug, but we will be travelling to Africa with my parents a month from now and by that time they should be fitting perfectly. I hope!
My glucose has been measuring around the 130s first thing in the morning. Not sure what to do to get it lower, but I will keep working on it. If I were not diabetic, would that mean that my fasting glucose level would be consistently below 100? Just curious.
Meowee -- I hope you've recovered from your tumble!
Rosie and Ruth -- good luck to returning to the plans now that the holiday is over. I've got to stay focused too so that I can move the scale down a few more ticks before I travel!
Later!

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
How can you tell that the last long weekend of the summer has passed into history? The sun is shining this morning; that's how. Doesn't make a lot of difference to me, personally, but I really feel for all those that had their last bit of summer freedom ruined by old Mother Nature.
Speaking of Ma Nature, ver glad to hear that her little Gustav has dwindled down to nothing exciting. Not so happy to hear that her latest DD, Hannah, is picking up steam -- especially since 'they' are saying she just might be heading our way by this coming weekend. Of course, a lot can change between now and then.
Afraid I really don't have a good answer for you DYAN . . . my mornings are often horrendous (this morning 9.3/167) but I usually get back to the good numbers by mid to late afternoon. As far as "normal" people being constantly under 100? I don't think that is always the case either. Everybody's BGL varies depending on so many factors. Suffice it to say, their variations are probably not as wide as ours.
Nothing big in my plans for this lovely looking day -- at least not so far -- one of the joys of retirement is being able to change your mind on the spur of the moment so who knows what I might end up doing.
Hope everybody else has a great day on the go . . . :carrot:

Grrrr! My demon sister forced me to have ice cream and honey with lunch yesterday. I'm sure my BGL went up in the afternoon as I felt really cruddy. That'll "larn" me! :nono: August was a dead "gain" as far as my ticker is concerned. It's lying at the moment but I intend to change that.
New blood monitor for free? Somehow I think that doesn't work when you are as old as I am and even the test strips are covered by OHIP. I'll check out battery replacement later this week - a really busy one, darn it!

Good morning everyone!
Well, it looks like Gustav sent some winds and rain my way yesterday, but then we are also right in the middle of a low front coming from one direction and a high front coming from the other direction. Weather could be unstable for a few days yet!
DH is traveling until Friday (boo!) I always feel a bit down when he is away. Created a bit of struggle in the food arena last night. Nothing major. Just had an extra *legal* treat that I wouldn't normally have. Will buck up today, though!
Glucose count today was 134 - hmmmph - about par for the course.
Oh well! Will keep chasing after the remedy today and will be extra vigilant of my meals and extra active.
Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Hi . . . :grouphug:
Just to let you know, I've been having really weird computer problems the past few days and will be making an appointment to get this little beastie a checkup, hopefully before the weekend. At the moment, 3FC is one of the few places I'm able to access, but I don't know how much longer that may last. So if I do go completely missing, and you need Mod assistance with anything, give a yell (either here or by PM) for RuthXXX who will, I imagine, bring help.
Bought myself a new toy yesterday, a laptop, along with a cute little stand for it (which took me over 3 hours to put together :dizzy:) and a thingamajig to allow me to set up my own little wireless network -- BUT -- this nasty desktop (which is currently hardwired into the cable connection) will not let me load the software to set up the wireless.
Happy to say, the computer problems did not send me into an eating frenzy yesterday -- hey, who can afford to overeat when they've just bought a bunch of new toys :dizzy: My BGL was down to a nice 6.0 (108) by dinner time last night (usual pattern) and was sitting at 8.3 (149) this morning -- definitely not as bad as yesterday morning. Weather yesterday was magnificent and this morning is also lovely. "They" are forecasting for more rain this afternoon and that is definitely not needed. Many places in Pictou County are still suffering from the aftermath of that freak storm on Sunday. Luckily I'm on higher ground and didn't get the flooding that some people closer to the harbour had to endure.
Hope everybody has a great day and also hope I will be back . . . :crossed:

Hi . . . :grouphug:
This desk-top computer is getting more and more disagreeable. New lap-top is up and running but I cannot connect it to the internet until this old thing cooperates. A friend gave me a name fo a local 'wizard' to call. So far no answer. I suspect he actually works for a living and just plays computer repairman as a sideline, so will try again later this evening. My fallback is to take it to Staples on Monday. So . . . hopefully I'll be running fine on both of them by early next week at the latest. In the meantime, just keeping the :crossed:
My BGL was awful this morning but was down to tolerable levels by lunchtime. May be a little stress in the mix.
BTW, I really like your new Avatar DYAN . . . :high:

That's such good news, Rosey! :cb: indeed!
Got a new battery for my monitor and was back on track with testing this morning at 6.0 ot 108 south of the 49th. It may go back up tomorrow as my sister (not the demon one) is coming for wings and wine and whine tonight. She just lost her best friend to cancer and needs some big sister comfort. I'll try to limit the wings and focus on salad because my weight is stalled!
Time to flip those wings - they are baked, rather than fried but still......

Good Morning, Sugar-Babes . . . :grouphug:
Another beautiful day for northern Nova Scotia . . . and I must get out and enjoy it, because we are being warned that Hanna is definitely coming for us, although only at the Tropical Storm level.
Another weird BGL day, too . . . at bedtime last night I was 5.4/97 . . . first thing this morning I was 8.3/149 . . . got busy cleaning up some cat debris and 45 minutes later (before I even got my first coffee) I had gone up to 10.1/182 . . . just :dunno:
On the computer front -- My desk-top has an appointment for this afternoon about 3 . . . add to the time estimate from the 'wizard-guy' of 5 or 6 hours in his shop plus another hour or two when he brings it back, . . . the fact that it is the weekend, and . . . the fact that Hanna is supposed to hit us late Saturday (with possible power outages) . . . I have absolutely no idea when I will get back on-line.
PS . . . I'm putting a couple of insteresting little tidbits over on the main Diabetes Support Board for you to take a look at when you get a chance.
Hope to see you all soon . . . :dizzy:

Well, I really got started late this morning, so didn't get to post a comment until lunchtime. Probably got started late because I had dinner with a girlfriend of mine last night and had things I shouldn't have -- red wine, three bites of cheesecake, three corn tortillas. Both numers showed it ... the glucose monitor (178) and the scale (up 2 lbs). Grrrrrr. My fault, though!
So, back on track today. Had a protien bar for breakfast (160 cal, 4 g fat, 27 carbs) and a salad for lunch. Numbers have been in the 120s so far today. Hope I will rein everything back in and work on success again.
Meowee -- thanks for the comment on the avatar! It was a photo from once when we went to a Greek festival and I was so envious that all the children got to get their faces painted. So, I begged the face painter to do mine too! Sounds like enviable weather up there! Beautiful now, with some potential excitement. Enjoy the beauty and stay safe during any tempest!
DH gets home today! YAY! He has been missed.
Have a wonderful rest of the day, all!

Good Saturday morning! Cooler and rainy here this morning. I don't know if that's the result of Hannah or some other strange weather thingie.
It's a good thing I got my monitor working as my BGL tested at 2.3/41.4 this morning! I must start keeping juice or glucose tablets on hand. I ended up having a salami sandwich on rye for a quick breakfast fix and am OK now. When I get a low I really don't feel it - just do dumb things like putting Fiber One into my tea pot and pouring the boiling water into the cereal bowl!
Just found my list of targets for July and August and wonder why I bother. I weigh more than I did July 1 and sure have not got back into walking. There are times when I wonder why I bother but I m NOT giving up - ever!
Hope Meowee keeps her power when Hard Hearted Hannah hits the Maritimes. Stay safe and warm, everyone.

Rosey -- I hope you're having fun with the dogs! While you regret the thought of snow coming, in Texas we wish for snow days! You and I could have a great time at the fairs by doing all of the fun things!

Good morning. I'm watching Hannah move toward the Maritimes. I hope everyone is safe and can check back in as soon as this brat of a storm moves out.
Good BGL this morning despite some pizza and wine last night! :yikes: Now to focus on clean eating today.
Rosey, dogs just know, don't they? When I was recuperating from my knee operation, Hershey stayed right with me all day except for potty breaks and never did her usual paws on my lap routine.
Jeanne, what's happening? Catch us up.
Dyan, I am just fascinated by your make-up. When they do face painting around here, I get done up too but yours looks particularly attractive.
Meowee, I hope your PC and Hannah problems disappear soon. We miss you!
I am skipping Church this morning to observe my sick dog but will get lots done around the house to get ready for a busy week. I may even finally get some cooking ahead done!
Happy Sunday to all.

I spoke with Meowee yesterday and she's still dealing with no computer and is into heavy withdrawal. Poor baby! She'll be bask as soon as possible, I'm sure so we'd better get movin' and shakin'. (Every time she writes that, I feel sooo guilty!)

Hi, all. Whew, I am so tired I could drop! We spent all last week with a trainer from the east coast "home office." It was horrible. 92 degree temps, no air conditioning, stuck in a conference room being told the rules and regulations and being indoctrinated into their elaborate computer systems. I was so out of it i forgot to take my bgl a couple of days. Today was no better. My job has gotten more complicated. Plus they can get into our computers from there so I will have to do my personal stuff after hours and be sure to sign out of this site every time. Sure wish I could retire.

I'm dropping by late today! Home from work and waiting for my husband and his sister so that we can go out for dinner -- (Indian food... hope I can stay on plan!)
Anyway, because my sister-in-law is here visiting, I had a glass of red wine last night and Ta-Da! my bgl registered 204. I guess the big message from the Diabetes Fairy is "You shall not enjoy any of the things you've enjoyed in the past! Ever!" (wow, did that sound *poor me* or what?!)
Today, I got my bgl to remain in the 120's, so I guess that's good. It has improved from the numbers I had when I first started, so... okay!
Weight hasn't budged. Sitting at this 25 lb plateau wondering if I'll ever see a lower number. I should probably just stop sitting around griping and start exercising, eh?!
Rosetta -- sounds like you have a STRESSFUL job! I had one of those 6 months ago and have thankfully found this new job which has just the right amount of stress.
Rosey -- I sure wish that rain would stop! I'm afraid you might melt! Maybe your Bingo $100 could be applied to fixing your computer so it doesn't lose your posts anymore!
Meowee -- Can't wait to hear all your stories when you come back!
Take care, everyone! Hope I can provide a more pleasant attitude tomorrow!

Guess who . . . :grouphug: . . . I have soooooo missed everybody. Five days off line is aty least 4 more than I ever want to experience again.
My computer "wizard" discovered when he brought the CPU back earlier this afternoon, that my keyboard and mouse seemed a little fried too, giving him the idea that I must have taken a small electrical hit in spite of the surge protection on the machine. I'm now working with a borrowed mouse and keyboard with new ones on order. Stranger and stranger.
My biggest challenges right now in the computer world --
-- get used to XP again . . . my son had taken XP off this machine and put on 2000 Pro, but the "wizard" thinks it is better to run with the operating system that the machine was designed for . . . so
-- figure out Vista . . . on the new laptop (same reason given as to why he doesn't want me to run them both on the same platform). At least I now have internet access on that little  too, although the little built in mouse thingee is driving me
-- get some of my favourite software programs reloaded onto the desk top and then onto the lap top too. So far Excel and Word are up and running but I've lost a lot of files that I really depended on having; so I'll have to rewrite the applications as soon as I can -- one of them is the homegrown program I use for tracking BGL and nutritional information.
Although neither by BGL or my eating over the past few days have been anything you'd want to right down for posterity . . . :s: . . . time to get that back on track, too.
Well, guess I'd better say "HI" to a couple of other places . . . have a great evening and I sincerely hope that I will be back tomorrow . . .

Good morning everyone!
Running late today -- BGL has been very high... yesterday's readings were 150, 150, 174, 195 and this morning it is 149. I guess the difference has been that I've been under work stress.... could that be it? Not *horrible* stress like my previous job -- just more stress than normal -- plus home stress with my sister-in-law visiting since Sunday. Could that be it?
Hope everyone has a fabulous day!

Hi gang . . . :grouphug:
My eating is calming down again, but the BGL is still out of whack. Hopefully it will calm down again soon, too, now that I'm able to stop fretting over the computer situation for a little while although I guess my plans for reloading software and rewriting some application files will be waiting for tomorrow since this is the regular mall-crawl day.
Since I'll be going away for a long weekend in North Carolina (if IKE is willing) as of next Thursday, got to make the most of the outing today. At least the weather around here is almost perfect (by my standards) today -- cool (under 50F and its a little after 10:30 am already) with beautiful sunshine.
Hope everybody else is having a really great Thursday and I am thrilled to be able to say with some degree of confidence -- see you all later . . .

Hi, all. Finally had a chance to log in and drop by. BGL was 119 today. Yesterday I had a nasty low. Good there were some donut bits around to bring the sugar up (yes, I have some glucose tabs, but who would choose those over donut bits?:D) Work still stressful. It used to be so easygoing around this office. Now it's all uptight. Feel like I'm working in a factory. Go home and collapse every night. But I need the Money and the health insurance, so I'll have to adjust.
Meowee - glad you're back online. Someday soon I'm going to buy a computer (as soon as I find a home for all the books stacked around my apt.)
Dyan - stress can sometimes do that to the BGL, sometimes it's what you're eating. Other times there is no explanation. If your bgl is consistently at those numbers you might want to talk with your doc about changing your meds. I added glucotrol to mine and the numbers have come down.

Another beautiful morning in northern NS . . . hope things are glorious in your neck of the woods too.
After I got home yesterday and started playing around with the computers again I decided I'd have to 'go to town' again today to find a book -- something along the lines of "An Idiot's Guide to Vista for Dummies" might be appropriate.
Other than that -- SSDD -- weight is still stuck solid at the ticker number and BGL is stuck solid at 'too high' (I'm honestly starting to wonder if there is something wrong with this batch of test strips).

Hello everyone!
Vista! My husband upgraded our computer to that operating system a few months ago, so let me know if you have any questions. Maybe I can help.
Rosey, lots of young 'uns around! That will keep things moving and in high action for you.
Rosetta -- thank you for the comments. I have decided that I probably need to get back to the doctor to see what he thinks.
In the meanwhile, numbers aren't great... had dinner at my mom's house tonight and she made all my favorites.... meat loaf, twice-baked potato (I split a half with her), asparagus, and .... a teeny tiny piece of pineapple upside down cake. (I couldn't help it! Grrr!)
We are sitting up here in the northeast portion of Texas watching Hurricane Ike start to move through.... this should be interesting.
Have a great weekend! I will keep you posted on Ike's progress!

Darn Ike! A hurricane is stressful so don't be shocked if your BGL goes up, Dyan, just stay safe. Even thinking about it affects mine, I'm sure.
Doing OK with "normal" readings for me but the darn weight is still hanging in there. I regained a bit this summer and it seems to be stuck on with Krazy Glue! Most of it came from BBQ and wine since it was a rather social summer. And they say it's easier to lose weight in summer! Who the heck are "they"?

My BGL is still running way too high, especially first thin in the morning, and I know that the computer frustrations have something to do with it. I've been putting off making an appointment with my doctor and for an A1C because I'm pretty sure he'll be putting me back on insulin () and I wanted to avoid having to cart those supplies with me on the upcoming little trip that Ruth and I are taking to North Carolina next week.
Well . . . that asparagus was great, DYAN . . . but potatoes and the refined flour in the cake . . . but, hey, we still have to live in the real world, Chickie; just do the best you can as much as you can.
Nothing much in my plans for today but a little more computer frustration -- still haven't found my favourite Euchre game; but I did get my Mahjong reloaded, to the desk-top. Today, I'll see if Vista likes it for the lap-top.
Have a good moving and shaking kind of day . . . :carrot:

Good Saturday Afternoon!
Well, Ike must be one of the oddest storms I've ever seen! It retains its hurricane appearance this far north?! We are just having some wind and rain, but the poor people down in Houston really have some flooding and many are without power. Galveston was devastated.
Ruth -- The excitement of Ike may have kept my bgl counts high, but I happily took a much needed two hour nap this afternoon and am feeling much better. Hope my numbers reflect it! If you take Meowee's advice and start moving and shaking, those pounds are sure to come off!
Meowee -- After the delicious dinner last night, I'm back to my own *by the book* cooking, so I hope that will improve things too. Sounds like you're settling in with your new computer, so things will continue to get better I'm sure!
Hope all the rest are doing well. I'm off to make something for dinner.

So good to hear that your area is doing okay, DYAN . . . but sorry to hear about some of the more southern areas that were so badly hit.
This morning is overcast and muggy around here -- probably a good day to get some household chores completed and some more smoothing out of computer wrinkles -- oh, that reminds me, I absolutely have to iron a few things too. I hate ironing and do as little as possible, but sometimes, you just have to bite the bullet.
Weight has been sitting on 210 for a couple of days now and that's a good thing; BGL is not a good thing once again this morning. :halfempty
Hope everybody has a great Sunday . . . see you later . . . :grouphug:

I stepped down off of that endless plateau this morning and am sitting at one of the decade marks peering down the other side! Can't wait to start enjoying the 270's. My tour of the 280's has gone on a bit too long.
I hope all of you enjoy this new week. I could've done with one more weekend day, but I'm happy to be down a pound or two.

One of those delightful mornings when both the BGL and the WL are too high . . . . . . Weather is also anything but delightful -- lots of wind and off and on rain coupled with high humidity and temperatures. Guess that this (along with the sky-high level for gas prices) is our little brush with IKE.
Hey, lots of indoor stuff for me to do to get ready for the little mini-vacation in NC.

Hi, all. BGL varies from a low of 114 to hi of 147. No explanation, as usual. It's cool here and the light has changed. It acquires a slightly yellowish cast, like a couple of layers of old wax. Job is still stressful. Was so tired on Saturday I could barely move. No way to live.
Dyan - glad you escaped Ike.
Meowee - I love to play online Mahjong too.
Rosey - You're lucky to have such an attentive family.
Jeanne - where are you? Hope all is well.

Good morning. Just realized I didn't test my blood this morning but do feel OK. It may be a bit hight as I've been messing around with my food dehydrator and dried bananas are the devil! I don't even like fresh bananas but those fried ones - oh my!
I'm off on a wee holiday tomorrow and am going to have to be very careful of my food choices. Luckily, Meowee will be around to keep reminding me - I think that's luck. At any rate, I'll do the best I can although airport food is not great. I may take along a couple of powdered protein shakes for emergencies. (I still have some Medifast diabetic ones somewhere.)
Have a good day and care for yourself. If you don't look after your body, who will?

Hi there, Chickies . . . :grouphug:
Well, my BGL was down to a tolerable 7.4 (133) this morning after hitting 11.1 (200) yesterday first thing. First test strip from a new vial, but very little difference in anything I ate between those two days . . . hmmmm . . . :s:
Weight actually blipped downward by a pound also; but still on the 210 to 213 rollercoaster ride I've been enjoying for the past 6 or 7 weeks.
As RUTHXXX mentioned, we will both be away this weekend . . . will we keep each other on the straight and narrow path, or will we wander off on a tangent together????? :dunno: Will let you know come Monday, I guess.
Nothing exciting for me today -- laundry; packing; Mahjongg; watching gas prices -- we had a $0.14 (per litre = 1/4 gallon) jump on Friday and although things went down quite a bit in Ontario (and places farther West) overnight last night nothing changed here. I'm putting off filling up for the 1.5 hour trip to the airport on Thursday morning just as long as I can. :crossed:
Hope you all have a great and fun day planned . . . see you later . . . :carrot:

I got a call from a nurse today. She said she was calling as a courtesy from my insurance company and would be happy to help me if I had any questions. I asked her a bunch of questions about diabetes. Things I've really been wondering about. I think she's the first person I've really *talked* actively to who could answer some additional questions I had. It was good to learn some new things!

After doing a lot of extra sleeping yesterday, I think I'm finally feeling human again. The extra 2 pounds must have just been www because they seem to have disappeared again this morning. Unfortunately the BGL was 9.3 / 167 but (sadly) that is almost a normal thing in the morning -- guess I'd better call the doctor and get that A1C organized. "mad:
At least the weather around here is an absolute delight -- sunny, calm, and a predicted high of about 14C/57F. I  Autumn so much.

Hi Ladys
I been reading your ongoing thread and thought I was say hi. I found this website earlier this month and have been poking around the different threads. I am 23 and been a diabetic for 11 years, but due to insurance and other things, I have only been in control for a little over 2 years. My A1C went from 12.5 down to 7.7 (checked last month). I hate telling people I am a diabetic, so it will be so nice to have you ladies to talk to. It's like the 2 things I need, diabetes support and weight loss support, I wish I found this site sooner.
Hope to get to know you better

Meowee/Ruth: Glad you had a nice trip.

Thought I'd better check in and let you know I'm still on track. Meowee and I were pretty darn good over the holiday. There were a couple of deviations but nobody went face down in ice cream - or truffles. It's nice to get back home although it was a wonderful weekend.
Today will be a bit of a challenge because I need to go to the periodontist for nine. I had my breakfast at 5 and will take along an apple and some cheese for mid-morning. Sure don't want low BGL while driving the 401!
I stocked up on veggies and salad fixings yesterday so don't need to venture anywhere near the Chinese buffet. I actually plan to lunch at home before I take my wee doggie to pet therapy for one.
Amandarose, nice to see you. What a very petty name you have!
Dyan, Olive Garden! :yikes: Good luck with avoiding the pasta and the bread.
Rosey, congrats to your son and his first moose. Save me a steak, OK?
Rosetta, I didn't think anyone complained about CA weather. Sorry about the weight. Could it be water retention from the heat?
My wee dog, Disney, keeps putting her paws on my lap so I guess it's time for a bit of a cuddle before we start the day. Happy Hump Day and I hope the hump isn't too steep.

My SDIT (service dog in training) properly gets to come home soon, I'm pleased, but we're actually in the middle of a move to a new house close by. :( I miss him every day.
My blood sugars are still ridiculously high, despite finally getting in to see a diabetes consultant after 6 months of waiting last tuesday. She was really awesome, changed my insulin back to lantus from Levemir, and gave me one of those new One Touch ultra easy fangly glucose monitors with the different coloured face plates. I love using this monitor, as it forces me to use the mmol version of testing, so I know now what Meowee means all the time!
I ran into a brick wall today. I phoned my doctor's office to make an appointment to change my prescription back to lantus and the new test strips, but they flat out refused to change it for me. They have said they must wait until they receive some special letter the Consultant is sending them, and I called the consultant and she doesn't send out letters to confirm, they should just allow me the changes...but they wont :(
anywho...I feel like a right cow sitting here in a baby fleece moomoo, because I couldn't be bothered to do anything after I finished grappling with the doctors! :(
I am so glad everyone is ok, and I'm happy you two had a nice vacation, ruth/meowee <3

Wow, I can not believe how different diabetes care is in the UK vs the US. My wait at my diabetes center is never more than a month (they recommend calling your general doctor if you need more urgent care) and they would never send me away without something in writing changing my meds.
Speaking of which, I have my next appointment on Oct 2nd. I don't mind going anymore since my control is better. The first time I met this guy, we didnt really know what to think of each other. He was about 5'2 and 90lbs and he wanted to talk to me about food issues. Are you kidding me? He had read in my chart that I had a major attitude about my control and did my own things. We now see eye to eye, but it took a while. My primary doctor says slow and steady wins the race.
On a completely unrelated note, I ran up the stairs at work today. We are really short handed (I feed off stress when it comes, but I hate stressful situations, weird?) and I was going to fast around the office, I ran up the stairs. I should count to see how many there are. I didnt even get winded. I have not ran up stairs in like 13 years.:dance:

Hello All!
Rosetta and Ruth -- I navigated so far past the pasta that we navigated all the way to a different restaurant in the Asian fusion genre. The Thai yellow curry was magical. I'm sure it was awful for me too, but I just didn't care this one time. I had a glass of red wine, yellow curry, and a cup of the most delicious coffee ever (Illy?).
You know what? It kills me that having a decent, delicious, enjoyable dinner one night will put a pound on me -- I'm sure it's probably the sodium induced water weight gain, but it doesn't seem fair. Anyhoo, I'll stop the whining.
And, you know what the strangest thing of all is? When I was putting on my gym-wear to go exercise tonight, I stood sideways and my profile looks much flatter! I can't imagine why..... especially if I had that one-pound add this morning! But, it was encouraging to see that the change was somewhat visible. I had lunch today with a friend from a previous job and she said she could tell I had lost weight and that it looked like I had gotten taller! (Not a compliment a girl who is 5'10")!
Anyway, I've resolved not to freak out over having my delicious, illegal dinner last night. Just back on track today.
Meowee -- I hope you get to feeling better!
Casandra and Amandarose -- Nice to meet you!

My weight is up :yikes: but the BGL is doing fine. I've been indulging a bit too much in wine with meals - gotta ditch that before it becomes a habit. I go for HA1C again in October and need to get the weight back down to where it was the beginning of summer - aka the BBQ and Booze Season.

Hi . . . :grouphug:
Kyle was a fairly polite little boy here in my section of north-eastern Nova Scotia and caused very little disruption. Wish I could say the same for my 'hed-cod'. Not being able to breath makes me a little cranky. Not being able to taste anything, makes me overindulge in things like chocolate and pizza -- this is not good for the weight or for the BGL -- Oh well, will soon be back to normal I'm sure.
Hope everybody else is having a great day and doing all the right things.

Hello Everyone!
Back from the Girl Scout Campout. It was great for things like swimming and archery and crafts and tarantulas (eek!). It was not great for glucose levels.... The girls have to prepare for bulk (naturally!), so Saturday morning, french toast casserole and Saturday lunch was sandwich and chips and Saturday dinner was spaghetti and garlic bread and cobbler. Sunday I had nothing before I got home and could eat properly.
My bgl was up in the 190s and 200s for most of the weekend. Today I'm eating properly and my bgl has been in the 110s.
That was my first trip where I didn't have control over what I could select from since being diagnosed. Now I know what to do in the future.
Does anyone know if a weekend lapse like that does specific damage?
Well, the granddaughter had a blast anyway, and that's what is important!
Sounds like you're all moving quickly into Autumn! Texas is always alot slower at changing seasons. Texas seems to looooooove summer! So, we Texans enjoy anything we get that isn't summer. We may still have about a month to wait.
Husband is travelling to Iowa today and will be back on Thursday. We leave for Africa on Saturday and will be gone for two weeks.
There has just been alot going on!
Talk to you chickadees later!

Does anyone know if a weekend lapse like that does specific damage?
Don't worry about this. My dad is a diabetic too and he used to take me once a year or so on "don't tell mom, eat what you want weekends" The only damage it might do is make you miss the foods you can't normally eat. I also don't recommend it right before you had to your diabetes specialist, because they usually look at your last 14 days. But physically no, you'll be ok.
I have been feeling pretty crappy lately. I could not get my BG up yesterday. I would check it, take some glucose tabs. Then I would eat, take my insulin and then check again and be low. Today, I am super tired, which is starting to be a trend in my life and I have to go to Goodwill after work to start my Volunteer project. :dizzy:

It's the long-haul that is important DYAN . . . your one weekend of high numbers won't do any serious damage . . . well, other than a yeast infection maybe (at least that's what happens to me, but it usually takes a few days to show up.)

Hard to believe that it's the last day of September already isn't it. Wow, where does the time go.
Autumn is definitely my favourite season -- both the temperatures and the colours are divine -- and, now that the cold is finally starting to calm down, I hope I can really get out and enjoy the weather.
My BGL is still in the nasty range in the mornings and by bedtime it is quite happy. Tomorrow I will make the appointment for an A1C and see what is going on with the all important averages.
Also tomorrow, I will make the appointment for cat number 6 (Sandy) to have his surgery. That might slow him down for a day. Today, all the cats are getting lots of exercise running from window to window watching the birds starting to flock and watching the lawn guy who was just here to do the fall fertilizing and liming routines.

BGL has been good and the weight is slowly dribbling away - an ounce a day maybe. That means I'll croak before I get to a normal BMI! I'm not giving myself a ticker until I'm back in the 180s.
Rainy and cold today here and I'm holding out about lighting the woodstove. It just doesn't seem right to need it in September. Maybe next week. I'm ready for some of those crisp blue and gold October days!

Hello Everyone!
Amandarose and Meowee -- Thanks for the comments. I hope to begin to curtail the dumb questions I ask.
Rosetta, Rosey, Ruth, Cassandra -- I hope all is well with you. You seem to be enjoying the move into autumn!
Feeling agitated today because I just want my husband to get back already. He is supposed to return on Thursday, but said he might be able to get an earlier flight to be back on Wednesday. Fingers crossed!
Hope you ladies have a wonderful day. Will check in a few times before I leave for Africa on Saturday!

This month is definitely not getting off to a sunny start -- quite cold and overcast out there, but I really must get myself out and about for some errands anyway.
Weight is holding nicely and BGL is doing it's normal morning high routine. In other words, nothing new around here.

Good morning everyone!
Glad to report my husband made it home safely last night. Now we are in the big push to prepare to leave for Africa on Saturday. Nerve-wracking!
As a result of the stress, my eating and sleeping have suffered and I've put on about 4 pounds :(
I know I will lose this with all of the activity in Africa, so I'm not really worried.
Just nervous!
Hope all is well with you! Take care!

Well . . . yesterday's shopping trip was a fun-filled blast . . . unfortunately so was the lunch that came first -- let's just say it contained carrot cake and too many delicious garlic bread sticks. :yikes: So my BGL never did get down to those nice evening numbers yesterday. This morning -- still too high, but no higher than it usually is in the morning.
Today . . . the sun is finally shining, but it is definitely no going to be too warm out there. The afternoon may include a little more shopping but definitely no carrot cake.
So glad your DH made it home safely DYAN.

Hi, all. Overcast day. May rain tomorrow. Yay! Took a day off work yesterday. Gastrointestinal problems. Busy at work. Wish i could retire. Been sort of remiss in taking my bgl. Right after lunch today it was 97, which must have meant it must have been lower before I ate. Didn't feel it though.
Dyan - Have a great trip.
Rosey - here's hoping that the pains are signs your legs are coming back to life.
Jeanne - Where are you? I hope everything is alright.

Another gloriously sunny day for northeastern Nova Scotia -- :yay: -- and I must get myself out there to play. I'm sure it won't be long before you have to put up with hearing me complain about the "S".
Had a good 'clean-eating' day yesterday and got a nice bedtime BGL of 5.9 / 106 to show for it -- of course, as usual, it's back up again this morning.

Oh ROSEY . . . I do not want to think about snowballs yet . . . we are having another beautiful Autumn day and things actually seem to be warming up a little, too.
For some strange reason, this is one of those days when time seems to be moving at at least twice the normal rate of speed. I don't seem to have done much today, but it's already past 2 pm. :dizzy:
Finally made the appointment for my A1C and couldn't get in to see the doctor until Monday the 27th . . . BGL is still running horribly high first thing in the morning and then dropping significantly by evening. Consequently, I fear I'm getting into some bad eating habits -- skipping breakfast, for example -- and will almost be glad to get back on the insulin regimen because it will definitely make me eat on a more logical schedule.
Other than that, SSDD . . . hope you all have a great one . . . :carrot:

Actually, now that it is actually daylight, it looks like the forecast for today might be coming true -- supposed to be mostly sunny and with temperatures of 12/13 (mid 50's). :crossed:
Yep, I set the alarm last night and then, naturally, got up half an hour before it went off. :dizzy: Still did not give me a good early morning BGL (9.7/175) after a 5.9/106 last thing last night. :dunno:

Rosey, keep that darned white crud up there! I am so not ready for winter.
I need to be nagged! I keep forgetting to test my blood. This morning I felt weird although I didn't do anything stupid but then had breakfast and recovered. I need to test it first thing - maybe move the stuff to where I keep the coffee mugs? I go for HA1C later this month and would like to have a handle on my FBGL.
Sometimes it's hard to take care of yourself! I promise to do it tomorrow and check in here.

Oh wow . . . not much went right yesterday for some strange reason . . . actually about the only thing that was okay was my eating. Go figure that out if you can.
Think things started off too early for my old body to cope with or something. Who knows. Hopefully today will be better for everything and the eating will still stay on track. :crossed: So far the BGL is a bit lower this morning than yesterday morning, but still not good at over 9 / 162.
Keep moving and shaking things today, see you later . . . :grouphug:

OK - I can handle this now! My "cold" is definitely leftover summer allergies and the iron supplements are kicking in. Now to eat properly to help the tiredness. BGL has been OK although it should not be - beer and pretzels for dinner? :yikes:
Today is big baking day for sales over the weekend but I handle that by wearing surgical gloves and sipping water while I cook. One taste would put me right over the edge so....
Wishing all the Canadians a great Thanksgiving Weekend! :turkey:

Hi, all. It's been a rough week and next week will be worse. The head honcho is coming out to meet us and we will be watched for 4 days. We're having lovely Fall weather, sunny and not too warm. Wish I could do some walking, but between my weight and my foot problems, that's not doable. Sigh. My BGL has been on the high side, but today had a pre-lunch low of 67 and had to take some glucose tabs. Two of my favorite authors are coming to town for book signings on Sunday and Monday. Looking forward to that.
Have a good weekend!

My BGL is decent again this morning - yes, I am now testing regularly. This weekend will be a challenge with TD dinner plus company all weekend. Anyhow, I'll do my best with a small portion and no dessert. Life goes on.

And as for you RUTH . . . definitely glad to see you testing regularly . . . just wish I could get good am readings like you do.
By this time next month, I'm sure my return to Insulin at the end of October will have settled my numbers down again as much as I'd prefer to be able to do it without having to 'shoot up', but guess it is not meant to be. First thing this morning was a 10.0 (180) :yikes: I know it will go down over the course of the day, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
Our long weekend is shaping up well, weather-wise -- lots of sunshine and relatively mild temperatures in the forecast.
Nothing big in my plans for today -- a little last minute shopping for ingredients for a pumpkin cheesecake I've promised for dessert tomorrow -- it will be made with lighter ingredients, of course, but just the same, I imagine I'll overeat at Thanksgiving Dinner -- I'm not a turkey fan, but OMG, I  the stuffing and the gravy.
Have a good Saturday, everybody . . . see you later . . . :carrot:

It's a good thing Canadian Thanksgiving is in October so we can have a break before Christmas.

I've gained a bunch of my weight back. My doctor at the hospital appointment on Friday (that I've been waiting 2 years for) told me that he thinks I'm type 2 not type 1, which was confirmed in the USA in 2004 by my then doctor who said I had definitively gotten type 1. I am currently on phone to both uk and USA doctors trying to find out for sure what's going on. I had my hba1c done, and it was 9.4, lower than what I expected, but still high.
My landlady is being iffy on me about letting me have my Service Dog. :(

Sounds like you need an insulin test, CASANDRA . . . one fairly common difference between Type I and Type II is the amount of insulin you are producing naturally -- most Type I's don't produce any while Type II's tend to produce quite a bit (more than non diabetics) but just don't make good use of it.
Unfortunately, I managed to eat more calories yesterday than I did on Sunday. Back to reality today. :crossed: Needless to say the BGL is still having awful morning numbers.

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
Where is everybody . . . I know I was missing yesterday but that's no reason for all the rest of you to go into hiding. Woke up yesterday with a nasty pinched-nerve kind of back ache and spent most of the day flat out in bed. It's still with me, but a little less so this morning so I thought I'd try sitting and typing for a little while anyway.
Now on my good news; bad news front -- after seeing quite a few double digit BGLs, I decided to bite the bullet and put myself back on insulin. Oh my what a delightful difference -- 5.9 (106) this morning and 6.2 (112) the day before -- as compared to October 14 which was 11.5 (207) and October 15 at 11.3 (203). The first 6 months I was off insulin held together fine because I was still taking Actos. The past 6 months without the Actos have been getting consistently worse and worse. So, it was time to do something (past time, actually, but I kept hoping for a miracle) and I know the doctor will not let me go back to Actos so it's back to human pin-cushion for me. Have a doctor's appointment for the 27th and will then see what horrible A1C number I come up with. Will probably drop the glyburide over the next few months but will keep on with the Metformin.
Other than that, it's another rainy day around here and that is not kelping with the back ache either and I won't be doing too much of anything today.
Have a good one everybody . . . think this little guy is about all the moving and shaking that will be seen around my house today . . . :carrot: . . . well, other than the cats; they never sit still for too long (when they are awake).

There are laws, but he is a service dog in training, so the laws don't apply. It's up to my landlady about whether or not the dog is allowed here. She's said it would be ok, so long as I had insurance, which I do, but the estate agents have gone mental about "ruining" the property for future tenants.

Hi, all. End of a frantic week. The Office Visitor went home yesterday, but not before leaving me with a time-consuming and boring task on top of all the other boring tasks I have to do. ick! I do wish I could retire. We've had a steady stream of hot days for about 3 weeks. I wish it would cool down. My apartment accumulates heat and it gets stuffy and uncomfortable. BGL has been all over the place this week. Yesterday it was 118, today, 187.
Rosey - Glad to hear you're getting more confident. That jewelry sounds pretty. In the early '70s there was a craze for making rings out of silverware. Unfortunately, after that you could no longer find reasonably priced old silverware is second hand stores.
Cassandra - Can you afford to offer the landlady a deposit for the dog? That is standard practice here.
Well, it's time to go home. It's laundry night. Hope I beat the other tenants to the washers!

Hi there . . . :grouphug:
Thanks to the wonders of injecting insulin directly into the system, the BGL numbers are looking great -- 5.7 (103) this morning :yay:. Weight is still stuck on the ticker number and (also thanks to the wonders of injecting insulin) it will probably take dynamite to get that moving in the proper downward direction again.
We do have a lovely sunny morning even though it is fairly cold and my back is feeling almost normal. I'm debating the wisdom of popping out to the Municipal Polling station and to pick up a couple of things -- fear that it might not take too much of a mis-step to lay me out flat again for another couple of days -- we'll see how things feel by this afternoon.
Hope everybody else has some great and fun Saturday plans . . . see you later . . .

Hello Everyone!
Just returned from Africa yesterday. After travelling for 40 hours to get home, I slept for 12 hours to recuperate. The trip was spectacular! We all (parents, siblings and spouses) had a great time.
In Botswana, they literally fed us 8 times a day. 3 meals and the rest were snacks scattered throughout the day, but we never had a chance to get hungry. I thought I would've gained 10 pounds, but I didn't gain or lose anything! The ticker is still correct.
I only checked my BGL twice during the trip (no time! plus, my family doesn't know I'm diabetic) -- Anyway, it registered high both times as early morning readings -- 150. But, it has to be because of all the wine I was drinking the whole time. Constantly. This morning, it is at 104. I think because the wine has left my system. I did take my medicine religiously, though!
How is everyone here?

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
Yesterday was an eating disaster of a day -- insulin does such a wonderful job of stimulating your appetite. Hey, isn't it wonderful that we get a fresh new start everyday. At least the BGL is looking great these mornings -- 5.3 / 96 this morning.
Wandered around stores for a couple of hours yesterday and this morning the back is still just giving me occasional twinges so guess I didn't do it any extra harm. Today we have overcast and it may rain later, so that won't make the aches and pains lessen any, I'm sure. There's wet snow in the forecast for Wednesday. Hopefully it won't stick around long.
Don't think your three day 'frenzy' will make too much difference RUTH . . . that's only about 3.3 % of the overall picture that the HbgA1C measures. Just "do as I say, not as I do" and get yourself back OP.
Hope everybody had a great weekend and that your Monday is looking fine as well. See you later . . .

Well, weight down a tad but the FBGL is still running a bit high - for me. Backlash from the time without meds?
This is going to be an interesting week. I am trying for "perfect" days. However, I've stopped kidding myself that I am following my Fitday plan and will be doing planned/actual lists in the kitchen on paper - the old-fashioned way! My bloodwork in Thursday morning so we shall see what the scale says then.

Darn . . . the weight is up to 213 this morning and the BGL is down to 4.2 (slightly under 76) and I had to eat breakfast before I even had my coffee -- talk about turning things upside down. Now, I start the day low (in fact I think I'll cut back to 10 units of insulin tonight instead of 12) and get higher by dinner time (8.8/158 yesterday). :dizzy: May move toward twice a day on the insulin (12 hours apart) and cut out the glyburide completely since it is not doing much to keep things level throughout the day. Hopefully some of the weight gain is due to a little too much salt coupled with a little too little water.
Hope everybody has a great day planned -- it is pretty cold and dreary around here, and they are still threatening a bit of snow for tomorrow. Last night on the local news, the resident weather guru mentioned that in 1974, Halifix got 39 cm (over 15 inches) of snow on October 21 -- we can do with out a repeat of that performance thank you. :crossed:

I believe last night I was finally back to relatively normal sleeping habits. Yesterday was the first day back to work in two weeks (blech). I'm glad everyone is so nice there. But, working? I want to be a lady of leisure!
I haven't had chocolate in a very long time. I had some chocolate yesterday and my bgl shot up to 244. That was a stupid move. My weight is still the same, but now that I'm back in a routine I need to start doing my walking so I can get back to losing. Staying the same isn't the objective.

Did have a low the other day and have started using the glucose tablets instead of sweets. Am going to an Oprah event tomorrow - if I can get up in time, that is.:D Have a good weekend!

Hello all!
Hope everything is well. Only thing really going on in my life is that I fell flat on my behind yesterday after tripping over a box in our office. VERY embarrassing! But my left hip is very bruised also! Went to the chiropractor this morning to make sure I got an adjustment before the whole structure starts to buckle. Exciting times.
Meowee -- I'm glad things have improved for you. I'm confident the trend will continue!
Rosetta -- Hope it has started cooling down around there! Warm weather when it is supposed to be cooling is a bit disappointing!
Rosey -- The snowflakes and the book sound like the perfect environment. Hope it is enjoyable.
One thing with my BGL is that I have started having numbers below 100 first thing in the morning (woo hoo!). It has happened for about 5 days straight and I'm not sure why, but I'm certainly not going to complain. Let's hope that trend continues too!
Anyway -- I wish you all the best for the rest of the weekend and for next week.

Hi . . . :grouphug:
Sorry I went missing yesterday -- bit of a family crisis -- nothing horrendous; just very time consuming. :dizzy:
BGL and weight are still holding -- good on the blood sugar; not so good on the weight. Two mornings in the below 5 (90) area; but nothing but 212 on the scale.
Anyway, gotta run -- hopefully my life will be back to whatever passes for 'normal' by tomorrow.

Hi Gang:wave:
Raining, but mild (19C/63F) around here. BGL of 5.3 / 95 this morning. Had a doctors apptment this am and he decided I should try Lantus (very long lasting insulin) rather than going to two shots of NPH (intermediate lasting). Then he decided that I should wait 60 to 90 days before I bother getting my blood work done since we kind of know that the HbgA1C would be a disaster right now. Oh, in case you didn't know, Insulin Glargine (Lantus) costs at least three times as much as Insulin NPH, so I certainly hope my insurance covers it. :crossed:
I'm using my laptop today and the slightly smaller keyboarde is driving me nuts -- everytime I type an "a", I change into solid caps. :dizzy: I'm spending as much time erasing as I am typing.
See you later . . .

We are having another mild but very windy and rainy day and as much as I'd like to see a little sun, I just know it will bring cold temperatures with it when it does arrive.
I slept poorly last night and was up way to early with a BGL of 4.0 / 70. Probably would have bottomed out if I had slept a little longer. Consequently, I just got up from a rather long nap and now feel like I've wasted the whole day.
Hope everybody else is having a good day . . . see you later . . . :carrot:

Hi, all. Well, the heat has gone for the moment. Ahh! Had a gastritis attack after lunch yesterday that lasted late into the night. Don't know what provoked it, but it sure was painful. Saw Oprah in person last weekend. She's just like she is on tv. BGL was 160 this am because I didn't take any pills last night except for my gastritis.
Dyan - Hope that fall didn't give you any more than a bruise.
Rosey - I wish I were home reading a book right now.
Jeanne - where are you? You are missed.

Hello All!
Our temperatures here got chilly! Very welcome, indeed. Supposed to be a bit warmer tomorrow. I've been sluggish with getting back on the program. I'm scheduling a meeting to talk to myself about that.... it is unacceptable!
After I went to the chiropractor on Saturday, I had a glorious surprise!! I have been struggling with severe night-time leg charlie horses for months... several times a night. I've taken potassium, magnesium, drunk tons of water, calcium, vitamin d, on and on and on!.... Nothing would touch those charlie horses that would send me flying out of bed every night!
Until I went to the chiropractor..... I said, "hey, there's also a pinch on the lower left... can you do something about that?" So, he did. Saturday night, Sunday night, Monday night -- nothing!
Soooooo excited about that!! Nice to know that there's *something* that can be fixed!
I haven't been very on top of my BGL.... testing it and all, just not addressing it with all of the other things we're supposed to do besides medicine.... *sigh*!
You ladies have a lovely rest of the week!

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
DYAN . . . tsk, tsk, tsk . . . get testing, Chickie -- be it goodnews or badnews you have to know. Definitely glad the Chiropractor found a solution for those leg cramps.
Still relatively warm for this time of year around here, but the sun is supposed to be coming out and the temperatures are predicted to start falling this afternoon. Not sure just how I feel about that -- seeing the sun is good -- getting the cold is bad -- oh well, at least there is still no snow in the forecast for the next few days.
Definitely bad news -- weight is up again this morning  On the good side -- BGL is great and read 4.6 (83) this morning.
Other that that, nothing too exciting around here -- must get my Christmas list organized. November is almost here and I still have things to make. :yikes: It happens every year . . . I get started on stuff really early but always seem to end up in a crafting frenzy by November.
That's all folks . . . see you later . . . :carrot:

Still having problems with the fluid retention problems from the return to insulin. Yesterday I had a nasty low in the morning of 2.6 (46). Sun is shining; wind is blowing; it's pretty cold out there actually. You'd almost think it was the beginning of November or something.
BGL is sneaking up a little to 7.0 / 126 this morning. And for the third morning in a row, I can not seem to stop getting up at 3:30 to 4:00 am. Consequently, I end up going back to bed after I have some breakfast and the whole day seems to be topsy-turvy after that. :dizzy:
Weight is up to 213 this morning, but by using the average for the month of 211.2, I've decided I can avoid moving the ticker. Got my fingers crossed that it's soo the truth again. :o

Well, after over a week of dealing with funeral, company and Halloween stuff, my BGL is all outta whack. Stress does it but so does crappy eating. :nono: I cancelled my bloodwork last month and had better reschedule it. Of course, it would help if I remembered my frassing meds! Forgot last night and have an 8.7/156.6 this morning, high for me.
Definitely back on track today although I do have a Church luncheon to endure. I hope to heck they have salad without dressing already mixed in. I'll really be in trouble if Rhea B. made her pecan pie!

The sun is shining and I think I'm in love -- with Lantus -- -- Another nice reading this morning of 5.7 (103) and the best part seems to be that things stay relatively stable throughout the day so long as I don't go overboard with poor eating.
Posted two good articles on the main Diabetes Support Forum this morning -- one about a call for a complete ban on AVANDIA ( http://www.everydayhealth.com/publicsite/news/view.aspx?id=620844&xid=nl_EverydayHealthManagingDiabetes_20081103 ) because of the heart and liver related problems (ACTOS is not recommended either because it shares many of the same implications) and the other about the massive increase in Type II diagnoses throughout the US ( http://www.everydayhealth.com/publicsite/news/view.aspx?id=620843&xid=nl_EverydayHealthManagingDiabetes_20081103 ) over the past ten years, and mainly in the southern states.

Hi . . .
JEANNE . . . Lantus is the brand name for Insulin Glargine which is indeed the only 24 hour kind that has been developed . . . the best part (at least for me) is that it really doesn't have a peak so not nearly as apt to cause nasty lows as the other kinds (like the Intermediate acting Insulin NPH that I was taking before).
RUTH . . . good luck with the HbgA1C (Glycosylated Hemoglobin Test, if you prefer ) Actually, you might be pleasantly surprised -- a 7% AIC represents an average of 8.3 /150 over the entire intervening period. Usually takes quite a bunch of high days to hit that average.
ROSEY . . . Wow you are doing so well both with the Christmas preparation and the weight loss. :yay:
Speaking of BGL -- mine was 4.7 (85) this morning. Still not exactly in good control of my eating, but hopefully that will come. At least I managed a second morning of sleeping until 5 am.

Went to the blood lab yesterday for the A1c and other tests. Will get the results next week. Been very bad eating wise. Keep trying but fall off the wagon easily.

Hi there . . . :grouphug:
Oh ROSETTA . . . wish I could tell you it didn't but all insulin (and most of the oral diabetes drugs, too) are kind of a double-edged sword. We need them to control the disease but they make gaining weight sooo easy and losing it sooo difficult.
I've had two days in a row at 6.2 (112) . . . would like to see it a bit lower, but at least it seems to say that eating two meals at restaurants yesterday didn't blow the BGL control; but I really have no idea about the calorie count.
To top it off, today turned into an instant replay in the eating department too -- so another day with no food tracking -- as well as the normal mall-crawl, had to take two cats to the vet. Nothing serious and everybody seems to be fine tonight (well the felines anyway).
I've got a terrible back ache (been around for a couple of weeks now) and tonight I've also got a nasty kink in my neck. Of course, this is not being helped by the article I was reading while waiting at the periodontist's office yesterday. It seems that chronic aches and pains (especially in the lwoer back) for those of us who have 'reached a certain age' may be signs of osteoporosis -- guess I'll have to discuss with my doctor. Hopefully it's just the weather and my regular osteoarthritis kicking up.
However, having said that -- we had a beautiful day today -- very late spring-like with lots of glorious sun; no wind; and a high of 21 (70) -- hard to believe it's November.
See you tomorrow, gang . . .

Hi, all. End of a long day. It started out badly when I had to walk down 6 flights because my apt. elevator is out of service. It will end just as badly because they haven't fixed it and I will have to walk up tonight and be stuck inside all weekend. Two days ago we got a memo from the landlord saying we no longer had a resident manager and gave us a phone number to call. At least 3 people called that number but they didn't send a repairman out. I am so depressed. All you who live in your own homes are so lucky. Well, sorry for the rant. I am listening to an online juke box playing the songs of 1959. I will relive my 13th year and maybe cheer up.
Have a good weekend.

Glad you liked the quiz, RUTH.
Well, I seem to be having a day of lower BGL readings -- 4.8 / 86 first thing this morning so I had a fairly big serving of oatmeal with apple and was 6.2 / 112 before lunch which was an omlette with mushrooms, spinach, and cheese. Then started to feel 'weird' about 2 hours later and had dropped to 3.3 / 59 so I had a snack of a pear and a couple of low fat cheese stix. Wonder where I'll be by dinner time.

Hi, all. Forgot to take by BGL this morning. Have been doing that a lot lately or forgetting to write it down. Had a bad weekend. Friday I had a horrible gastritis attack and was in pain for hours. Saturday I was locked out of the laundryroom in my apt. building and had to take my laundry on the bus 6 blocks up the hill to a laundromat. And it was blazing hot.
Rosey - Congrats on your new reefer. I got a new one two years ago when the freezer compartment turned into an iceberg.

I've been forgetting to take my oral meds in the morning -- luckily the Lantus Insulin seems to be keeping things pretty well level anyway. BGL was 5.8 / 104 this morning.
Wow, what a difference a day or two makes weather-wise -- high temperature Sunday, 70F; yesterday, 41F; today we will be lucky to make it much above freezing and the precipitation that is expected will probably be white and lingering. At least it isn't nearly as windy.
Also seem to be getting overly busy with non-fun stuff for this silly company I used to work for that can't seem to remember I retired about 7 years ago. I know it's my own fault since I can never seem to say NO. Really do not need this extra stuff at this time of year -- I still have Christmas sewing to do. :dizzy:
See you later, gang . . . :carrot:

Hi all sunny and cold here this morning. bs was 185 just doesn't want to come down much..i did go and sign the tranfer papers for the clinic here so hopefully she will work with me to get this bs under some kind of control. the reason i have been driving 3 plus hours to my other doctor is he special in treatment of diabetes and has been my doctor for over 9 years,,i guess i didn't feel safe here,,but that is gonna have to change,,,i am back on wt watchers as of this a. m. and trying to think positive so much,,,once i get in there to see the doctor here i am going to have her go after what is the huge bumps on my heals they are so painful now..i can't even go up stairs now anymore without a rail...i think this is what is making me sooooooo depressed,,,believe me it is not easy to work like this,,contant pain,,i can't afford to quit either,,,,
Well all thanks for listening,,,your all great,,,hope all have a wonderful day and that we all count our blessing,,,jeanne

Oy! Just took the carb test and got only five right! So much for my so-called expertise. I'd better gen up before I teach that Healthy Living course in the Spring.
FBGL was 7.8/140.4 this morning. I wonder if my snack of SF ice cream at bedtime was the culprit. I'm feeling draggy and cold these days although my iron levels are back where they should be. I'm going to try for more fruits and veggies. I'm only ten pounds lighter than I was last November so I've not lost that much insulation!

Yes it is very, very quiet -- things do tend to slow down around 3FC at this time of year though so hopefully it will pick up again.
I'm still doing the busy as a headless chicken dance but just wanted to pop in with a quick little  -- somehow I don't remember that working twelve hours a day was quite so tiring ten or twleve years ago. Do you think I'm getting older or maybe I'm just out of practice :dizzy: Hopefully it will be over again by next week.
Looks like winter is finally going to get to us -- we are supposed to get 30 cm (a foot) of snow by noon tomorrow, but so far just a bit of white dust.
Eating habits are not great but BGL is still okay, even though a bit bouncy.
See you soon, gang . . . :grouphug:

Hi all. Cooler weather has prevailed this week. I am having amazingly low sugar levels lately. It was 87 this morning. May have to cut back on the glyberide. Saw my endo this week. He's okay with my A1c (5.9). I will not be able to see him so often anymore as he is not a preferred provider on my new insurance plan and there is a $500 deductible for out of network providers. I have the next two weeks off. Hurray! I haven't had more than a couple of days off for about 4 years. I'm just going to take it easy, sleep in, go to movies and check out our brand new Academy of Sciences. As I don't have a computer at home, you probably won't hear from me for a couple of weeks. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and watch those carbs!

Plugging along at the same weight and a slightly too high FBGL. I think I'm going to have a med change after Christmas. Oy!

Hi there . . . :grouphug:
Good luck with the bloodwork RUTH and good luck with the Thanksgiving dinner, ROSEY.
I'm still in number crunching mode but have flatly told 'them', I do not want to be facing this kind of stuff again next year -- just getting too old and tired and I want my time to myself to do the things I want to do. SO THERE. Hope it sinks in this time.
Still fighting the up a pound or two; down the same pound or two cycle. At least the BGL readings have been pretty good the past couple of mornings -- 5.6 yesterday and 5.2 today (101 and 94).
Its pretty mild and very rainy and all that snow is trying to melt and having a terrible time finidng someplace to go. Glad I live on top of a hill.

Right now I am craving turkey - especially the dressing. I had turkey bacon for breakfast but it just didn't cut it! (Actually I think I'm craving dressing!)
Weight is all over the place and I didn't test the blood this morning. Am I in denial? Anyhow, all I can do is stick to plan because I sure don't need the sickies this time of year. The next four weeks are booked solid with "stuff" - not all of it fun "stuff" but I'm working on it!

Hi there . . . :grouphug:
Glad you had a terrific Thanksgiving, ROSEY, and that today proves to be fun for all as well.
Unlike you, RUTH, I never crave turkey. It is definitely one of my least favourite things. Now, the stuffing is an entirely different matter. :o
I'm finally done with the "job" stuff and as soon as I get over this hatred of my computer, hopefully I'll get back to normal around here.
All things considered, November eating is not coming out too badly on average but I'm definitely up a pound and will move my ticker to reflect that on Monday (unless some miracle occurs). FBGL has it's up days but mostly it's running in a nice area too -- 5.6 (101) yesterday and 5.1 (92) this morning.
Have a good Saturday and I'll see you all later . . .

Quick pop-in while I wait for some costumes to "iron" themselves in the dryer. I've been running flat out getting costumes, scripts and stuff ready for our village Christmas Pageant and am right down to the wire. I also just finished baking a huge tray of goodies for another event tomorrow and have an extra dog for the weekend. You'd think I'd be skinny being on the run so much but it doesn't seem to work that way.
My thyroid checked out OK and now the doc thinks I may be suffering from mild depression. It has been quite a bad year. I am planning to get back to pure eating and a "normal" schedule tomorrow and then we'll see. In the meantime, weight is in and out of ONEderland and FBGL is running too high for me at 6 to 8 (108-1480). Of course too many carbs and the occasional "treat" like a brownie or Ferraro Rocher contribute to that!
We do get a new month soon, right?

Hello Everyone!
Seems that you all had a festive Thanksgiving. We just got back from 4 days in Phoenix with dh's family. Very high energy bunch!
My sons also got to come along and for the first time, I told them about my diagnosis. They wanted me to check their fasting BGL and after eating as well. It certainly relieved me to see that their numbers are super normal looking, so I told them to get on track while they're in their 20s so they don't end up like their mom. They understood.
This week I am back on plan. I've done terribly. No excuse.
Meowee -- hope that computer straightens up!
Rosey -- sounds like you had a great time with the gks
Ruth -- I hope the pageant went well!
Take care,
Dyan
