Default Your Superstitious Foods

I had a soft boiled egg for lunch today, and it got me thinking about different beliefs and superstitions we have about food. For example, if I have a soft boiled egg then once i have finished eating it I always smash out the bottom of the egg shell, so the witches cant use it as a boat. I've always done this ever since I was little, and my dad told us about it. Of course, I dont really believe that witches are going to use my egg shell as a boat (and why would they need a boat anyway??).

Do you have superstitions around your foods too? Or am I the only nutty one

This isn't really a superstition, but when I eat french fries, I have to eat two at a time, and they need to be the same size. If there's a particularly long one, it gets folded (exactly) in half and the folded end is dipped in the ketchup/mustard/whatever.

But really...why WOULD witches need a boat????

On the same Egg subject. I'm absolutely paranoid about rotten eggs. I always have to put them in water to make sure they sink. AND once hard boiled, I always spin them on the counter JUST to make sure they are indeed hard boiled.

and yeah, couldn't they just fly over the water?

or swim. Theres nothing to say they couldnt swim. Unless they melt in water. I cant remember if that applies to witches or something else

Im a bit paranoid about eggs too, but usually i dont have enough water in my pan to make them sink. But to test if its hard boiled i just tap a little bit of it, and then stab into the yolk with a knife. if the knife comes out clean, its hard boiled. If not, then i put it back in, and because you only make a little hole the innards of your egg dont all run out into the water

I am not at all superstitious, but my MIL drives me crazy with superstitions. I can't think of any food ones right now, but I know that if I put a hat on the bed she freaks out.

Who knows!

My friend's grandparents used to insist on throwing salt over their shoulders, not if they spilt salt, it was for something else, i cant remember what.

if I eat anything from packets they have to be opened the right way up, if they aren't I have an awful feeling all day and cant stop thinking about it. My step dad told me when I was about 12 that it was bad luck, I have absolutely no idea why though.

thats interesting, i googled it but got no hits, hmmm...

i looked up witches and eggs and boats, and apparently there are lots of Slavonian myths around them using egg shells as boats. And i found on this website http://www.magick7.com/gypsy-sorcery/egg-lore.htm

"And in England, Spain, the Netherlands, or Portugal, there are many who believe or say that if the witches can get such shells from which people have eaten, unbroken, they can, by muttering spells, cause them to grow so large that they can use them as boats."

And i was born in England, so there you go. Not so nuts after all!

Iconised -- ha, you think I don't have a plan in place for that?? If there's an odd number of fries, then the largest one (which always gets eaten close to last anyway) gets broken in half and eaten as if it were two.

I was gonna say, those must be some tiny witches, that could use eggshells as boats. But I guess it makes more sense if they can make them bigger. We may be thinking too hard about this...

that's really cool about the witches and eggshells... myths and superstitions are very interesting to me.

I know I have some strange food habits but I can't think of any at the moment. Perhaps I'll start crushing my eggshells.
