General chatter - favorite non-diet internet sites (besides 3FC of course!)

Hey all

I've been really tired, lazy, and unproductive this week and have spent a lot of time on the computer. This follows 2 weeks of intense busyness and productivity, during which my husband and I did a huge spruce up of our house in preparation for hosting a wedding reception at our house for 2 dear friends. So we painted inside and outside, did tons of yard work, etc., so I am ok with having a few days to "recover."

Every day this week when I get home from work (teaching summer school) I have wanted to sit on my butt on the computer. I've found some cool sites, and it has me wondering what sites others go to regularly?

My usual daily computer use is to check in at 3FC - sometimes 3 or 4 times, but generally pretty quickly, and to check my work and home email accounts. Besides that I don't "surf" much.

Here is one very cool food blog I found this week ... for a real treat click on her recipes index and drool over some of her dishes.... YUM. Her food is GORGEOUS.

http://desertcandy.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

-So, what sites do you visit daily (or regularly) besides 3FC?
-Are you able to surf at work?
-How much time do you spend on computer on a typical day?
-Does anyone in your house (roomie, DH, kids, etc.) complain about your computer use?
-How often do you have to pull yourself away from the computer to get things done? :comp:

Well, I work for myself so my boss is cool about work surfing (*grin*) and I RSS a lot of blogs, so I don't know if that counts in "visiting" a site or not. But here are some I love to visit.

-So, what sites do you visit daily (or regularly) besides 3FC?
http://www.dooce.com
http://www.icanhascheezburger.com
http://www.dvdtalk.com (great DVD reviews)
http://www.rottentomatoes.com (my go-to site for movie reviews)

Plus various news sites and a couple of photography related message boards that I belong to (professional, paid sites).

-Are you able to surf at work?
Yup. See above. ;)

-How much time do you spend on computer on a typical day?
8-10 hours between work and personal

-Does anyone in your house (roomie, DH, kids, etc.) complain about your computer use?
Nope. I tend to bring my laptop downstairs and work from the sofa so roomie/husb. gets to see me ... and I break and chat and watch something, then go back to work.

-How often do you have to pull yourself away from the computer to get things done?
Not as often as I should - housework suffers. :) But mostly I'm pretty good about getting, up walking away, coming back. Otherwise I get neck and shoulder cramps.

This website is my favorite by far and I visit it often. I also like hungrygirl.com and shapefit.com. When I feel like dreaming about traveling, I go to tripadvisor.com. I spend about 2 hours a day online. My hubby and I make eachother a bit nutty, each trying to convince the other why they need the computer more. If he's working, he gets priority, of course. Otherwise, anything is possible! I love this question because I'm hoping to find some more good links. :)

My first stop every morning is Woot! (http://woot.com) and then I come here. I usually visit IMDb (http://imdb.com), YouTube (http://www.youtube.com), facebook (http://facebook.com), Wikipedia (http://wikipedia.org), andMyspace (http://myspace.com) every day too.

I can get online at work any time, but during the summer, it's a lot less than in the Fall, I can spend a couple of hours sometimes. At home, I spend a couple of hours in the evening, and I live alone, so I don't have anyone to complain about it. I really don't have to pull myself away. I get bored after awhile and go do something more productive. :)

I love POGO.com its a game site... from solitaire, bingo, poker.. so many games... 95% nice chat... There is a 'free' option and a 'membership'... I paid $40 for the year... It is well worth it for me... the 'pop-ups' etc on the free side drive me nuts... worth checking out, but keep in mind even the page set up is different with free/member.... have fun........

Photo - I checked out Dooce... very interesting! That may be a new site for me to read!

BTW, I just realized that people might think the site I listed is a desert site (since it has candy in the name) - it's not! It's just a really beautiful food blog with fabulous recipes, using all local foods and produce, mainly mediterean (sp?) food actually. I have a couple of her bean recipes saved, but I haven't made any yet.

Harpo - pardon my ignorance, but what kind of site is WOOT? I didn't look at it too long, but I wasn't sure what it was all about...

I meant dessert, as in sweets. I'm confusing myself, as the name of the site is desert candy :dizzy:

Harpo - pardon my ignorance, but what kind of site is WOOT? I didn't look at it too long, but I wasn't sure what it was all about...

It's a One Deal, One Day website. They have one product, nearly always at a discounted price (and sometimes VERY discounted) and they sell it until it sells out. They don't offer another deal until 12 p.m. central time the next day. They have all sorts of things -- but mostly electronics, gadgets, and computer related items. They've had some great deals on computers, cameras, and MP3 players, but I have all of those, so I didn't buy, but there's quite a few people who buy and then resell for a profit. They do sell refurbished things, which I personally don't buy, but there are plenty of people who do and never have any problems. :)

I'm on Neopets, though not as much as I used to be. I started playing in 2001 to procrastinate from midterms at college. Now I use it to procrastinate doing things around the house!

I also like my daily celebrity dirt fix at TMZ.

And I couldn't say for sure how much time I've wasted perusing videos on YouTube.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who checks out Icanhascheezburger (http://icanhascheezburger.com/) every day.

I also check in at SwapaDVD (http://www.swapadvd.com/) and Paperbackswap (http://www.paperbackswap.com/) regularly - they are free sites for swapping DVDs and books, the only two addictions I have left now that I've given up junkfood.

Surprised nobody mentioned E-bay yet. I love to browse thru there for favorite things. I also like puzzability.com if you like word games. Just go to the current games on their website. There are several different games you can play daily & weekly. If you get all 5 answers right in The Daily Post, you get your name in the hall of fame. Also merriam-webster.com has a daily word game I am addicted to. I check cnn.com, abcnews.com and my local news daily. Also check my home & work e-mail a lot and my on-line banking account. I also like hungrygirl.com, weather.com. & drweil.com.

I am not supposed to be on the internet at work unless it is work-related. I do have to fight over the computer with my son, as he is home from college & his wireless isn't working right now. My husband thinks I'm on the internet way too much & he's right. Sometimes I spend 4 hours or more & 3FC is a big portion of that. Pre-internet days I spent a lot more time doing housework, but now that my kids are older there isn't as much mess to worry about.

I'm on 3FC all day long as I work (I'm on the computer at my job ALL day and it can be so boring, so I take 3FC breaks so I don't pass out). In addition to 3FC, I also LOVE: cuteoverload.com and gofugyourself.com

Sometimes I go to PerezHilton.com too, if I'm in the mood.

Besides 3FC of course (I have to make myself get off here!!)

I have to say Craigslist is my favorite lately -- much better than e-bay -- because it doesn't cost anything to sell stuff :D and it's for your local area -- so people have to come to me to pick up my "junk". I also love the personals -- because I find them amusing :dizzy: (married myself!!)

I do like TMZ too -- just for the entertainment factor. I also spend some time on my WW website.

And, the final is google -- I look up so much stuff from there.

I can surf at work all I want -- I'm self employed!!

I spend a good 5 to 6 hours a day on the computer -- but the less time I spend on line, the more work I get done and the more money I make :dizzy:

My eight year old is always asking me to get off so he can use the computer, even though my old one is in his room -- he likes mine because it's faster.

I got a kick out of dooce. Thanks!
My DH and I play Kingdom of Loathing, a free online role-playing game. The twist? It makes fun of every other role playing game. The creators of the game are nerds, and know that they are nerds and have a good sense of humor. The characters are all stick figures. There's lots of tongue-in-cheek references to tv shows, movies, current events, etc.

I. Love. Craigslist.

I also love the personals even though I'm taken It's funny how many people I've seen on there that I KNOW. I think that's what keeps me coming back as odd as that it. I also love the missed connections. I actually found one once that I had witnessed. This guy posted one for girl on the bus and I remembered both of them and could recall their conversation as it was a strange us ride because we were stuck at an accident. It was crazy!

I have several webcomics that I read, I love me some Lolcats, and I really like stuffonmycat.com for mindless entertainment and engrish.com for more mindless entertainment. Recipezaar.com for recipes - I love that I can sort based on who has the highest ratings.
I can surf at work, but some sites are blocked. 3FC for some reason just won't load at my work, but it isn't blocked.
Oh - and whenever I need a pick me up I have a picture of Christian Bale on the beach all wet and shirtless bookmarked. :D

Oh my, I spend waaaay too much time on the internet.

I do need it for work, though, and as I'm a freelancer I'm not limited in any way except my desire to spend some time, like, outside. Or something. ;) I also keep in contact with my overseas friends and family mostly via email and Skype.

Some of my favorite sites have been mentioned a lot already, including ICanHasCheezburger (icanhascheezburger.com) (I also visit all of their other sites, IHasAHotDog, PunditKitchen, Failblog and Graphjam), and Cuteoverload (http://cuteoverload.com) for when I haz a sad and needz some cutes.

For movie, music, book reviews and a general pop culture fix, I love and mostly trust the good people at AVClub (http://avclub.com). Rottentomatoes (http://rottentomatoes.com) is a great way to get a first impression about a movie, and Eric D. Snider (http://ericdsnider.com) is a hilarious film critic and blogger I enjoy a lot.

I often visit io9 (http://io9.com) to keep in touch with my inner scifi nerd.

For movie trailers I usually go to Apple (http://apple.com/trailers) or straight to Youtube.

Every Sunday morning I check out Postsecret (http://postsecret.com), which is only updated once a week and can be very touching and/or funny.

I don't play online games that often, but have a fondness for Freerice (http://freerice.com)(it makes you smart and feel like a good person! ;)) and Text Twirl.

I LOVE meh some lolcatz on the cheezeburger site. Hilarious!

I usually go to Yahoo games http://games.yahoo.com/games/login2?page=gi&ss=1 to play Gin, Graffiti and other games. I love escape games too http://www.gamershood.com/list.php?id=17&order=date&p=1 and http://www.escapegames24.com/. I also visit skwiggs blog http://skwigg.tripod.com/blog/ (check out the abs on THESE ladies --- talk about buff!!) When in need of something will usually always checkout ebay and amazon.

For entertainment (and lots else), I like www.popsugar.com. Very little nasty snark unlike so many other entertainment sites. Speaking of celebrities, Rosie O'Donnell's blog, www.rosie.com, is entertaining.

I check out www.dogster.com for tips and knowledge on training my dog or learning about dog behavior. There is also a www.catster.com for all things cat related, if anyone is so interested.

I love to read www.pastaqueen.com to hear of her most recent exploits. She lost 195 pounds, going from 372 to 180.

While I don't play too many online games, I do like to contribute to answers.yahoo.com and watching my point level increase. I just made it to level 3!

Finally, I like to check out www.mentalfloss.com for my trivia/knowledge fix.

I used to visit my state craigslist page, but had to stop, as I would usually end up depressed/annoyed with mankind. Just too much negativity for me to enjoy anymore.

Every morning I get on and check my email, 3FC, Myspace and Facebook. Then my browser is pretty much parked at craftster.org for the remainder of the day. I check ESPN and CBSSports daily during basketball and football season.

We can surf at work as long as we're still being productive. (Oxymoron?)

I spend 8+ hours on the compooper a day. Except for Sat. and Sun. I usually spend about an hour online on those days.

Nope, nobody complains.

Nope, my family and then my housework come first. If there's something I need to do, I do it. The internet will be there when I get back. :D
