Flamingos are pink because of the pigment from all the shrimp they eat.

(or maybe I'm a sucker and I'll believe anything somebody tells me?)

PhotoChick
06-17-2008, 12:36 AM
Actually the flamingo thing is close to true ... it's not shrimp however (since shrimp don't actually turn pink until they're cooked!).

Flamingos' coloring comes from the different kinds of algae and microscopic sized sea creatures they eat. I believe Caribbean flamingoes are supposed to have the most vibrant colors because of the types of algae there.

Why did he write this? Because he was told it was "Impossible" so he set out to make the impossible, Possible. ( I love that!! )

The Great Cuttlefish: Mating Facts.

When it is time for the Great Cuttlefish to mate, the big, strong males put on a dazzling show of colors and patterns in order to gain the attention of the female. The females are generally smaller, stay brown (for protection) and have their tentacles tucked in. As these "macho" rituals of performance occur from the male side, one of their own is being quite sneaky...

Often in the animal kingdom, males engage in battle to win the opportunity to pass on their genetic code. However, what happens if you're a smaller guy and would surely fail in hand-to-hand combat? The answer is quite surprising...

While the larger males are flashing their colors and designs and fighting each other fiercely, the smaller males try to come in incognito. He will color himself brown and tuck his tentacles in. Hmm... who does that sound like? The female! He slips by the other males, unnoticed, and mates with the female in her den!

Essentially, he dresses in drag and gets the gal! Macho isn't always best then, eh? ;)
