Food Talk And Fabulous Finds - Does anyone 'mist' their favorite cooking oil and where did you get mister?

I have heard for some time that it is better to 'mist' say olive oil than buy the commerical canned spraying oils. But I have never gotten around to doing it.

So 2 questions. Has anyone done this and liked it? Second do they sell specfic misters for this purpose and if so or if not what do you use and where did you buy it?

I was just invited to (yet another) Pampered Chef home party. I wasn't able to attend but I did go online and check out their new product line. I have bought many things from them in the past and I have been very pleased with the quality of the products. I feel they are moderately priced.

I see that they do sell a refillable mister for cooking oils. I think it is selling for $10.50 for a really large empty bottle. I plan on getting it. I feel that it will pay for itself within a short time. And, I like the idea that I am not continually buying cans that I end up throwing away in the garbage. I think it is a great environmental idea as well as using your favorite oils, especially if they don't come in the can (not all do).

I got a MISTO for my birthday in 2001 and have been using it ever since. I put in evoo and use it for any spray I need. The best part is that you can put in whatever oil you want and don't have to spend $3.00 for Pam every few months. Plus it is environmentally friendly because you pump the cap to build up the pressure to it will spray, so no flurocarbons. You can go to bed bath and beyond or linens and things and get it there. I've had the one from Pampered Chef for a couple of years now and it works great! I use olive oil in it, but any oil could be used. It's definitely a good investment.

We bought a MISTO last year, and it bit the dust on us, it no longer works??? We picked up an inexpensive one at a local grocery chain, and it's going fine so far. We were quite disappointed with the MISTO and can't even figure out what happened...

Daffy, what happened to yours? I've noticed that we can only seem to get a stream of oil to come out, instead of a fine mist. It sort of defeats the purpose! In the past I noticed that if I pumped more it would come out as a mist, but now all I can seem to get is the stream. I don't know if it's time to get a new one or I'm just not using it right!

I have heard that you need to regularly clean the nozzle of the Misto- which is why mine is still in the box...

My roommate several years ago had one from Pampered Chef and I loved it!

I had one from Pampered chef but it broke. It worked good for about a year and then all I got was a stream or squirt of oil coming out and then after a while nothing. I took the thing apart and cleaned it but it never worked again. I know you can buy the misters in kitchen stores but if I buy one again I'll look for a cheaper one. BTW, I loved mine when it worked.

I don't have one because I read a lot of reviews that said they failed to function after a brief period of time. Now, I wonder if you could use a plain old generic spray bottle. I am going to try it. I will let you know if it works.

I've wondered that, too. I'll be interested to find out if the oil gums everything up or if it'll work.

Don't try this at home! :lol: It doesn't work and then you have to clean everything up after it doesn't work. It sprays a stream not a mist.

I also had a PC one for a couple years and regular cleaning when it started the "streaming" did the trick. But eventually it stopped working. I want to get another one. I used it a lot and liked it.

I just went over to Amazon and entered "olive oil sprayer" in the search box. There are ninety reviews ranging from "hate it" to "couldn't live without it". It sounds like following the instructions is imperative (imagine that!). Right now they are selling the "Misto" for $9.99 with free shipping - but - you have to spend $25 to get free shipping - Amazon's usual ploy to get me to buy more.:lol:

A reviewer mentions that she has refilled one of those liquid butter replacement sprayers with oil and that it works.

Some reviewers point out that the spray is not as even and the usage is not as convenient as using PAM, but they feel like the trade off of avoiding the additives in the commercial spray is worth it. Like many things, the old fashioned or homemade way of doing a task is not always the most convenient.

My interpretation of the reviews is that the sprayer is good for spraying your salad or veggies prior to grilling. It is not so good for spraying pans for baking because the sprayer needs to be pumped up repeatedly. Someone says it would be easier to wipe an oiled paper towel around the baking pan.

Had a PC one until it broke. I now have a MISTO, which I have used for about a month. So far, so good. I did read however that it is important to release the pressure every time you use it, otherwise it will gum up and stop working (which is what happened to my PC model).

I am faithfully doing so hoping that this one will last.

I have the Misto brand. I purchased it at Bed, Bath & Beyond I think, or Linen's N' things...I can't remember which one. I have had it for at least 2 years, maybe 3. I haven't had any problems with it. I use it for EVOO. I use it most every day. I think it was about $10. I stopped using Pam or other brands because of the additives.

Hmm, I had a PC one that acted the same as all of you have reported. I never remember hearing about releasing the pressure. I'll have to try one again. I do like the idea of not using the additives.

It seems that from everything on this thread I have read, that the true Mistos for Bed Bath and Beyond or Linens and things have held up pretty good and the PC ones break. I have had mine for over 8 years now and i still use it almost everyday. I suggest going out and spending $10 at BBB and enjoy!!
