So - I've read several posts about what folks are eating for breakfast. Oatmeal keeps coming up. I love oatmeal, and I know that all oatmeal is not created the same. I know instant is sugary, that the longer it cooks the better it is for you, and that steel cut is good.
However, when I have oatmeal for breakfast within 2-3 hours I am almost asleep at my desk. I know that I have to have a balanced breakfast in the morning to be able to function. I have used the weight control oatmeal made with soy milk and mixed with bluberries.
And - any other breakfast suggestions would be great. Looking for a little variety.
I've never had oatmeal cause me to fall asleep. Are you eating anything with your oatmeal? A piece of fruit & a little protein? Or, do you need a snack after 3 hours? I eat my breakfast around 7 in the morning, and there's no way I can make it until noon thirty without any other food!
Add some protein with your oatmeal, and I'm with Faerie - I have a mid-morning snack that also contains some protein. Straight carbs (oatmeal) will put me to sleep a couple hours after eating.
I add flax seed meal, soymilk, and raisins to my steel cut oatmeal in the morning and I can last approx 3 hrs before needing to eat again. Maybe you just need to add more protein to breakfast or have a snack like Faerie and CountingDown have suggested?
I think you need protein with it. I mix a T of peanut butter into mine, yummy. Or do an egg whte on the side.
Some of my favorite healthy breakfasts:
flax (frozen) or oat waffles topped with peanut butter and jelly or fruit
a banana and 1T peanut butter rolled in a Flat Out wrap
Frosted Mini Wheats and skim milk and fruit
A piece of wheat toast with 1T peanut butter on it and a whole pink grapefruit (yum)
Egg beaters with a slice of 2% Kraft singles cheese and wheat toast
Omelets made from egg beaters, spinach, other veggies, lowfat cheese
Smoothies made from nonfat plain yogurt, fruit and ice (fave is 1/2c yogurt, 1 whole fresh mango seeded and peeled, and a bit of OJ and ice and vanilla)
Egg Muffin made from whole grain english muffin, egg beaters and either ham or light bacon
I've started to eat instant weight control or Kashi go lean with cottage cheese and yogurt and am full for hours. :O.O It's much better than straight cereal like I was doing
I make 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1 tbls rice protein powder, 1 tbls flax seed meal, 1/2 to 1 cup frozen blue barries, water and 1 packet splenda. It keeps me going through my workout. I'll have to find something else for the summer. It's just to heavy in the heat.
egg white scramble with ketchup, pnb toast, fruit
kashi waffle with pnb, fruit
cottage cheese and fruit (peaches, pears, or banana), pnb toast
instant grits with lite cheese, fruit
ff,sf yogurt with flax, pnb toast
When I make my peanut butter toast - I eat a slice of weight watcher break with 1 or 2 t. of natural peanut butter
I need to have protein at breakfast - or I am hungry in a couple of hours.
Some people find that oatmeal leaves them bottomed out on blood sugar within two hours. I agree with the idea of adding protein--for example, a soft-boiled egg or two. Soymilk or cow's milk don't contain enough protein to offset whatever happens with the oatmeal.
