Hi...
I still like my tuna, and chicken salad. I load it up with veggies etc. I don't use much, but I haven't found a mayo or mayo replacement that doesn't leave an after-taste or tastes horrible to begin with.... any ideas...

Have you tried Hellman's Dijonnaise? It's a Dijon mustard-mayo combo that's only 15 calories per tablespoon. I think it works really well with tuna. :)

I like Nasoya fat free vegan mayonnaise, 10 cals per tbsp. Also plain lowfat yogurt works well at 7 cals per tbsp.

For flavor, I add dijon mustard, basil, lemon juice, and a dash of cayenne pepper.

You don't have to eat mayo if you don't like it. Why not use a olive oil and vinegar dressing on your tuna instead?

Good point Zenor. Avacado also mixes well with tuna.

I understand where you are coming from. I have always used Helmans (real mayo) but since I have switched to the reduced fat one I have found that if I add a little salt to it, I don't miss the real mayo taste as much.

My husband likes to use Hidden Valley Ranch Light (not fat free) instead of mayo. I usually use half regular Hellman's and half fat free sour cream, or I also like homemade or bottled light italian or vinaigrette dressing.

I don't really care much for mayo but I bought some for a recipe. I bought Nayonaise which is pretty good (kind of like miracle whip) and fairly low calorie.

I think most reduced fat and fat free mayos are hideous, so I prefer to use smaller amounts of the "good stuff," and then dilute with skim milk, fat free sourcream (which I do like), rice wine vinegar, dijon mustard, horseradish, or even water.

Try cottage cheese, and I've seen recipes for tuna salad that use tomato paste or pasta sauce, if that appeals

I couldn't agree more!

I also use pepperoncinis in my tuna salad and use some of the juice to make it more 'wet' if you know what I mean...

What about miracle whip light/ Fat Free?

I'll add another vote for Nayonaise. The brand is Nasoya--it is a soy-based mayo. It comes in regular, dijon, and fat-free varieties. It's much lower in calories but with the same texture and no aftertaste (for me, anyway). Nelie and I must have night and day taste buds because I would never compare it to Miracle Whip :p but I agree that it's a good mayo substitute :)

*raises hand for Nasoya mayo!!!*

I love that stuff. I much prefer it to all of the other mayo substitutes... the others are often too salty or tangy.

Anyone listen to Preston and Steve on WMMR? They had a segment on mayonnaise people versus miracle whip people. It made me laugh. I can't stand miracle whip.

I really like French's Gourmayo in the wasabi flavor. It is a mix of light mayo and wasabi. Nightengaleshane recommended it on here. The only problem is that it is very hard to find - at least in southern California. I have purchased it at Meijers in MI, and at one Wal-Mart super center here. Can't find it anywhere else.

That cracks me up ... sorry as I get way off subject; but as kids there were Oreo versus Hydrox... Cheeze-its versus Cheeze tidbits, Coke versus Pepsi and always the biggest argument was Hellmans versus Miracle whip....
If anyone cares, I was: Oreo, Cheeze-it, Pepsi and Hellmans...

Call me crazy but i am a miracle whip fan! Always have been, always will be. I do use the light and sometimes fat free. Never tried other-brands except for like if it was in a salad already and I ate that salad.

Go figure: when I was a kid my mom almost never got anything but Miracle Whip (I just only recently figured out what the difference IS between mayo and MW), and when I did have mayo on sandwiches (at lunch counters) I thought it tasted yucky. Now she gets mayo pretty often and I don't mind it (not so much spread on sandwiches though, just mixed into salads) but I've lost the taste for Miracle Whip.

gailr42, I've had mayo with garlic as a sandwich spread @ restaurants and liked it (exception to the above statement), but I can't find it in supermarkets, why doesn't French's or somebody make that? (No trouble finding Gourmayo here in Minnesota.) Also, in the section for Latino stuff you can find mayo with lime juice, but always full-fat, if they had a lower-fat version I'd give it a try

I should try Nayonnaise or Nasoya one of these days and see if I think the taste is worth the calories saved

I think this would work in chicken salad ...not sure about tuna.

I went to a themed potluck last week where the theme was "fruity recipes". I am facing this potluck thinking "PROTEIN where is my PROTEIN". All I could think of was bringing a Hawaiian pizza...which led me to my ham and pineapple rollups... Mix 8oz crushed pineapple in 8 oz light cream cheese, spread on tortillas, slice of ham, pile of spinach, roll up toothpicks...mini rollups

Anyway my POINT is that the creamcheese/pineapple mixture ended up having a taste surprisingly mayo like. I am considering trying it for chicken salad.

Thanks ennay, that sounds good to me, i put grapes in my chicken salad, so why not a little pineapple... yum...very summery... it will make the chicken salad go a long way too.

This is a recipe for tuna salad with cottage cheese. It is good this way. I use water packed tuna and don't add the olive oil and it is still good. I also add relish--usually dill, but sometimes no sugar sweet as well.

Tuna Salad Recipe
Ingredients:
1 (6 ounce) can of tuna fish (if packed in water, drain it, and add a teaspoon of good quality olive oil)
1/3 cup of cottage cheese
2 Tablespoons of mayonaise
1/4 purple onion, chopped finely
1 celery stalk, chopped finely
1 Tablespoon of capers
Juice of half of a lemon
Pinch or two of dill
2 Tbsp minced fresh parsley
1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard

Also...instead of all mayo in your recipes, try using half or less the usual mayo and substituting fat free/light sour cream or fat free/light plain greek yogurt. I do this now in all my recipes. I use Trader Joe's brand of fat free plain greek yogurt or any light sour cream, sometimes a third of each mayo-yogurt-sour cream.

PS-I only buy/use full fat mayo, but by mixing it with the yogurt/sour cream, it reduces the calories & fat. I did try a Kraft mayo made with olive oil, it was OK. But the next time I bought mayo, I went back to the regular again.

Ooh, this sounds good. I never know what to put in tuna other than mayo and maybe mustard.

I've also heard of mixing in hummus instead of mayo with tuna. I tried it and didn't care for it, but maybe someone else will :)

One of my dinner staples is tuna melts. About once every 2 or 3 weeks I guess??? I make the tuna salad w/cottage cheese, toast some Ezekial bread, mound up the tuna salad on the bread on a baking sheet, top it with cheese--I use cheddar or provolone, then broil it until the cheese just starts to brown. I have to eat it with a fork. I serve it with a simple side salad or just some tomato slices. Yummo!

I grew up on Miracle Whip Light as well. My bf thinks it's nasty, but I can't tell a difference.
