South Beach Diet - TGIF On The Beach

Our favorite day of the week, Happy Friday! :)

I'll have to find something special to do with Maggie this afternoon, she's very put-out because Audrey's class is doing a study on bears, and as part of it the kids are having a "Teddy Bear Picnic" today. Boy is Maggie ever jealous! I"ll have to come up with something to pacify her. :(

I'm not going to move my ticker just yet, but the scale was good to me finally. I've been really working hard and upped my exercise, it's about time I finally saw some results. :D

So how's everyone celebrating their Friday today? Anyone up for a Brazilian wax? ;)

04-25-2008, 07:25 AM
:coffee2: Good morning Chicks

Just a quick drop-in this morning. I'm trying a new yoga class and need to leave the house in half an hour (eek!). I had a great day shopping yesterday and now have a few warm weather shirts to choose from. Just in time for cold weather again :(

Cottage- :carrot: on the scale is moving again. Can't wait to see the ticker slide :)
:yikes: no wax of any kind for me. I'm a granola chick - don't even shave my legs. I had no more room for ankle scars and gave it up years ago.

Have a good day!

04-25-2008, 07:35 AM
Cyndi, I hope you enjoy your yoga class. I'm looking to do either that or pilates, but I can't find a class around here with hours compatable to mine.

I just waiting for my morning dose of caffeine to kick in so I can get moving. I slept miserably last night, tossing and turning most of the night, and then overslept. I didn't even hear Jake get up.
As for shaving, I shave my legs (and armpits) every single day, and have done so since I was a teen. I just can't stand feeling that little stubble. At least I'm always ready for an impromptu swim!

Survivor was good last night! ;)

04-25-2008, 07:41 AM
Cottage...have fun planning a treat for Maggie..sounds like a tea party is in order! And way to go on the scale moving!Hope you have a great day and don't nick yourself shaving today!
Cyndi, have fun at the new yoga class. I really want to take one this summer.

Me...nothing exiting. Work, then I have to get serious on getting this house clean. Have to pick up MIL early tomorrow at the airport.

For the "oldies" here, remember how last summer I was on a marinated cucumber and tomato kick? Well, yesterday I harvested our first cuc of the year and was it ever yummy. That baby got marinated for a couple of hours and was great to eat while my husband was throwing back brownies during Survivor!

04-25-2008, 07:58 AM
Oh Cat, I am so jealous! I checked out my veggie plot yesterday afternoon and pulled out last year's cuke vines. Around here I don't dare even think of planting cukes until June 1 although this year may be an exception.

Cottage, I hope you can think of something fun for poor Maggie. A doll's tea party with little fancy sandwiches, maybe. Shaving? DO me too while you're at it.

Cyndi, I need to get out some summery stuff too. Our mornings are pretty cold (43F today) but the days are sure warming up. I suspect I'll be wearing a lot of long cotton skirts this summer as my knee is too ugly to show in shorts. I'm with you on the legs although the darned nurses shaved one when I had my operation. If we want to be really granola, we could cornrow them with little beads.

Donny my new Yard Man worked on his own yesterday and really made progress on the clean-up at the front and side of the house. He seems to know something about gardening as he cut back some of my perennials but left the roses for me. He has to work for someone else today but is definitely a keeper!

I am about to take my pain meds, eat a decent breakfast and get off my butt and over to the gym. It's a glorious morning and will be a lovely 15 minute drive. The leaves are coming out and the trees look all gauzy.

The hepaticas are out - trilliums to follow. I think I'll change my avatar.

Have a great TGIF!

04-25-2008, 08:24 AM
Good Friday morning!

Linda, I second the tea party idea. What about in the park? It's supposed to be so nice again today!

Cyndi, glad the shopping went well yesterday. I'd love to get away with not shaving, but I think my husband would leave me. He'd at least sleep in a different bed! I'm lucky enough to be able to shave once a week without too many complaints.

Cat, cucumbers are such a fresh and cool summer treat! We did an old summer standby for dinner last night - zucchini and yellow squash with some red onion and garlic. Tom usually grills it but as I'm not the Master of the Grill, I just roasted them and they were just as good.

Ruth, is June a normal cucumber-planting month? I'm hoping to be able to start some kind of garden this year but I don't know what I could do since we probably won't have a house until the middle of June at the earliest.!!!

I'm all runned for the day and am trying to get up the motivation to start cleaning before the kids wake up. I'll probably just surf around on the computer, though, and then clean later...lazy bones... Nothing big planned for this weekend. I should start going through all our stuff and sorting out what's going to Germany and what's going to Goodwill, but I don't feel like doing it. *whine* *whine* *whine* We leave a month from tomorrow, though, so I need to get my rear in gear!

04-25-2008, 08:32 AM
Sorry, Kara, but I've sort of lost track. Where will you be in mid-June?

04-25-2008, 08:44 AM
I'm feeling much more sociable now. :D I just finished a simple 1 mile workout with weights and am enjoying some oatmeal with dried apricots, cherries and cranberries. :T

I love the flowers in your avatar, Ruth. Are they hepaticas?

I was thinking of a picnic in the park, the weather is perfect for it. Kara, it shouldn't be too late to get a garden planted once you're settled. Gardening is big in Germany. There are even places where you can rent a garden plot, which was really popular with apartment dwellers. You'll probably want to start with nursery seedlings rather than seeds, though, so you can catch up with the other gardeners. :) Only another month til you leave? Won't be long now!

04-25-2008, 08:58 AM
oy! no time today for personals.. maybe later.. but already i'm overwhelmed.

enjoy friday

cottage i saw the scale moved for you WTG!

i had the pits done too last night i'm smooth as silk now... LOL

and my hair is short and spiky and cute...

AND the scale said 219 even. April 1st the scale said 224.6...
AND next week i get to go back to the gym....

have a great day everyone.

04-25-2008, 09:12 AM
Good morning chicks!

cottage - happy scale victory! Have a great picnic today before the rain comes!
Kara sounds like a great low-key day. I could use one of those, it hasn't happened around here in a while. Too much stuff happening this time of year!
Cat, I am jealous you are getting stuff from the garden already! We are just getting ready to plant the tomatoes.
Cyndi - wish I could be a granola chick, but I shave, wax and pluck EVERYTHING. I think there must be a gorilla hiding not too far back in the family tree. It's not pretty if I let it go.
No seriously Ruth, I could cornrow if I let it go. Glad your new yard man is working out. Is he cute?
Hi Nessa, what a great start to the weekend - you should go and celebrate!

I can't count yesterday as completely on-plan, sadly. It was crazy busy around here last night, and trying to help DD finish up her project, I cooked for the kids but never got around to cooking for me and DH, so I ended up eating a little of the turkey I made them, which had white pasta in it (gasp). The sky didn't fall, so I guess I'm okay.

Survivor was so fun last night. I was worried for a while that we'd get a boring season, but with Ozzie gone, things are really shaken up. Todd is a loon, sucking chocolate off of Cirie's fingers. Ick, can you imagine how dirty their hands are? Natalie is just ... horrid, I realize, now that they're letting her talk. I don't know who I'm rooting for at this point. I am warming back up to James, but somebody please tell him to get a new metaphor and just leave the apple alone. It's not that clever, and doesn't really even apply.

My day, oy, work, work, clean, workout, work some more, laundry, plan menus. We've got a very busy weekend so I won't get much done, need to do it today. DD is going to a ballgame with friends tonight, and we'll do the usual pizza at grandma's I guess. Have a good one chicks!

04-25-2008, 09:14 AM
Good monring all - just waiting here till the coffee finishes before heading out to work. I'm so glad it's Friday!!! Or, as one of DH co-workers says... "It's the 5th Monday in a row - it's not Friday till after lunch!" I like that, describes my typical week to a T.

Well, coffee is done... I gotta fly...

OH!!! I got my kitchen scales yesterday! I was so happy!!! I got both, and I can't wait to use them. One is staying here, the other is going to go to work... maybe keep it in my bag, so I'm never without.

Good luck, and have a Great Day!

04-25-2008, 09:29 AM
Sorry, Kara, but I've sort of lost track. Where will you be in mid-June?

I know. I'm hard to keep track of, huh?! We'll be in Germany, about forty miles southwest of Frankfort.

Linda, thanks for the advice on the seedlings. It'll be a good way to ease into the gardening thing. I did well with our roses in California so there is some hope for me, although I'll need lots of guidance!

Nessa, almost six pounds this month?! Man, you rock!

Schmoodle, I was sad to hear that Ozzy got eliminated last week. I missed the show and forgot to tape it. I am also getting annoyed with Natalie. There's a line between playing the game and just being nasty rude and she's crossed over. I don't have a clear favorite, either. Should be an interesting next couple of weeks!

Mare, glad you got your scales! Have fun with them!!!

OK, I'm really off to clean this time...

04-25-2008, 09:40 AM
Kara, I was actually happy to see him go once he started reading his own press and became an arrogant jerk. He killed my Ozzie love.

04-25-2008, 09:46 AM
kara i have a friend (actually an admin on my board) who is a south beacher who is transferring to Germany for her tour in August. her youngest boy is about your oldests age I think... I think she's going to be in Heidleburg.... not sure... i can check if you want.

04-25-2008, 10:07 AM
YES! it is Friday :carrot:

The scale was up .4 this morning but I am thinking it's pre period weight as it should be coming any day now. I'm all packed & ready for my trip dh & I will leave as soon as I get off work and all I know is we are going to a spa resort at a beach - I am excited as can be.

Cottage hope you & Maggie find something great to do. Congratulations on the scale movement (in the right direction) I will skip the wax as I shaved this morning (tmi I know)

Cyndi glad you had a great shopping day

Cat & Ruth I hope you gals have a great day

Kara sounds like you may need some :dust:

Nessa you sound like a whole new woman - good for you!

Hiya Schmoodle

Mare hope you like your new scales

I'm gonna be MIA this weekend but will be back on Monday - hope to check back in later before we head out.

04-25-2008, 10:27 AM
I can neak on dh's work computer this AM as mine is still being mended! I made a flax "cookie" last night as I am out of all vehicles to get my flax in they are ph 1 compliant but kinda bland! When I tweak them better I'll post the recipe.
This time next week I'll be back at work ARG!!! but it will be good.
For all he shave/wax debate I'm getting my brows de-gorrillad this AM in the winter I let my legs and pits go. Poor DH! in the summer I'm OCD about my pits at least

in NSV news lol I got hit on by a 20-something guy yesterday!!! he told me I was Hot(and young!) ! I thusly told him I was married and very flattered.
I have to motor get some coffee and get my rising late butt in the shower!

04-25-2008, 10:28 AM
Good morning chicks. I was finally able to go back to sleep after leo left for work. No kids woke up this time woo hoo. Leo will be doing nights again next week so hopefully I'll get alittle more sleep next week. Everyone is so chatty today. can't keep up with everyone. I have a lunch with my best friend today. Very excited. She's always fun to be around with and we just have so much in common and have had many similar experiences in life. She's from Hawaii also but we met here in houston. I was trying to really stay on plan today or at least eat really good because July is coming and I want to get to my goal by then. If I have time, I will probably go walking with the kids this morning. Yesterday our female dog got loose. Our fence in the back is broken and Leo put a board to cover the hole and she learned how to knock down the board and got out. Luckily she knows how to get to the front door or else I wouldn't even know where to start looking for her.

No brazilian wax for me but gotta do some major shaving. I can't shave my legs everyday. My skin is way too sensitive.

04-25-2008, 10:30 AM
Good morning ladies, Happy Friday!!!!

Cottage - Good morning, thanks for getting us started. Hope you find something fun to do today. I'm sure that Maggie will love what ever you do.

Cyndi - You don't shave anything.....that's a bold move. But if it works for you, than more power to you!

Cat - Enjoy you're new yoga class. I'm so jealous that you have cucumbers from your garden. Home grown veggies are the best!

Ruth - So glad to hear that your Yard Man is working out for you. It's nice to have someone that you trust to work with so that you don't constantly have to be looking over his shoulder.

Kara - being new to the group, are you a reserve who's going to Germany for a stint? Are you taking your whole family. I know I'm late to the party but I'd love to hear a little more about it.

Nessa - Glad to hear that your all cleaned and spiffy. I LOVE getting my hair cut. It makes me feel so much more fresh!

Schmoodle - So Ozzie's been reading how everyone liked him and it's now gone to his head. I'd love to know where you heard that because I'd like to read the article. and btw......Natalie is a little koo-koo!!! She was freaking me out last night.

Mare - Congrats on the scales purchase. May they be an ally and friend on this journey.

Gonnabe - Have a great weekend away!

ME: Quiet Friday at work. We've got a big review coming up this Wednesday and I'm going to be a conference on Monday and Tuesday in Palm Springs, so I have to get my office cleaned up and just tie up some odds and ends. Tomorrow I'm at the USO in the morning, so tonight I don't think we'll be doing a whole heck of a lot. Tomorrow we're also getting together with friends for lunch. Anyhow....I'm babbling. I hope you all have a WONDERFUL weekend!

04-25-2008, 10:58 AM
Weeeeeeeh! Run-by posting for me! Deadlines to meet this afternoon and not enough staff in to meet them!!! Argh!

Have a good Friday, chickies! :comp:

04-25-2008, 11:01 AM
Hi. How about an old hen on the Beach??? This is my 3rd day on SB and so far, I love it. So much better than all the other programs I've tried.

Cat, can you send some cukes my way? I love them but forget to buy them when I'm at the store. I did have a couple artichokes this week - they were such a treat when I was growing up - many, many years ago. I try to grow stuff in my little patch of dirt, but all I am doing is feeding gophers.

Kara, I hope you have a wonderful time in Germany. I was in Austria on my 65th birthday almost 7 years ago and loved it. Flew into Munich, then took the train to the little town we were staying in. I'd love to go back. And the trains are wonderful - cheap and clean.

Today is errand day - supposed to get hot and my air conditioning is broken - can't get a new one for a month or so. Good time to get out. I am losing like 1/2 lb. at a time but every little bit helps, and I feel so much better.

Have a lovely day.

04-25-2008, 11:04 AM
Kathleen, we need us old hens on the Beach to keep these young pullets in line! :welcome:

04-25-2008, 11:21 AM
Good morning, everyone.

I went for a walk today with my daughter in the stroller, instead of my jog. I took a different route, and neglected to realize it was ALL uphill the whole way out - this brutal, gradual incline that never let up. My jogging route is up and down all the way out - a nice break for my screaming legs. Well, I was quite winded after pushing 35lbs of DD around in that stroller. We went farther than I jog, so I think overall it was the same amount of effort. I'm noticing less jiggle as I wiggle.. ;) I can't say I've been on-plan, but I have been making sure I don't overindulge, and I'm doing my best to eat foods that don't bother me (refined stuff). So far, so good. My scale has been moving down, down, down... I'll get back to 143 soon, hopefully.

04-25-2008, 11:30 AM
hmacneil, it's not anything I read, just what I observed. He never used to come across as cocky, but this season he seemed to start thinking he was running the show and it started getting annoying. And I think Natalie must have thought she was going to come across as cute and spunky, but it was really obnoxious and kind of scary. Hope she's the first of the girl power group to get voted off.

Hi Kathleen, we are chicks of all ages here! Welcome to the beach!

04-25-2008, 11:33 AM

you don't HAVE to eat flax ya know... i never have.

04-25-2008, 11:33 AM
I just received the most beautiful arrangement of my fac flower (cala lilies) from dh

I was trying to post the pic but it won't do anything

04-25-2008, 01:03 PM
Nessa, I think our car is coming in to Heidelberg but we'll be more south at Ramstein Air Base.

Schmoodle, what does "reading his own press" mean?

Gonna, have a great trip, and thanks for the dust!

Kierie, good to see you around! Hope you made it on time this morning!

Tawnya, hope you get in a good walk with the kids! We went out yesterday and had a great tromp around town!

Heather, my husband is in the Air Force. We just got back from Korea, and he's at a school in Florida for the next month, and then we'll be off to Germany. It will feel strange to be in the same place for more than two years as the last time we stayed somewhere that long was in 2003! My six year old son has lived in six houses in four states and two countries!!! The three year old is just behind him with five houses in four states and two countries, and when we left Korea, the baby had lived half her life in the States and half in Korea! She had her first birthday in Korea and her second will be in Germany, so she won't get an American birthday until she's at least six, probably closer to ten or twelve! Never a dull moment for us.

Kim, good luck getting everything finished!

Kathleen, thanks for the advice! Where in Austria did you go? We're looking for travel tips!

Krystal, onward and upward, eh?! Glad you got in a good walk!

04-25-2008, 01:30 PM
If I try to do personals, I will never manage to post so let me just say Hi to everyone. I have been reading lately but too busy at work to post. Work did layoffs earlier this week but once again I still have a job (thank god)

I conducted my first Junior Staff training session on Wed and my first Walking Den Leader training session last night. They went well and we are starting to get registrations in.

Brian will be camping this weekend so I'll be dropping him off at 6 tonight. He'll be climbing in Oklahoma which sounds like fun. I've got two trips to the warehouse planned this weekend and need to get all the paperwork processed that was turned in last night. If the weather isn't too wet, I have lots of yardwork to do as well. We had another night of bad storms Wed night and even lost power for a half hour. Just west of here were tornados and other major damage so at least we avoided that.

I really need to plan my meals well for next week. This week has needed to be quick meals but next week I have less going on and can cook more.

04-25-2008, 01:48 PM
Hi, again, kara

I was accompanying a friend who is a concert pianist to a music conservatory program in a little town about 60 miles south of Salzburg called Bad Aussie. It's main attraction are the baths, but our concern was music so we spent most of the time listening to concerts. We were there about a week so I got very familiar with the place.

We took the trains (2) from Bad Aussie to Salzburg one day, and another train from Salzburg to Vienna the day we left. Then came back to Salzburg, and took the train from Salzburg back to Munich. The trains are very clean and always on time. When I got off the plane in Munich to go to Bad Aussie, I got a first class ticket and was assigned to a compartment with a bunch of other locals, but when I changed trains in Salzburg, I went second class - it is more like a regular train - bench seats and a lot more open. So, if you travel by train, definitely go second class - cheaper and more comfortable.

There are so many places to see in that area and if you drive, it is the same as driving in the States - you drive on the right. The German language road signs can be deceving as so many names are similar. Most people in the larger cities speak English, but in the smaller towns, nearly everyone speaks German. But there are always someone around who can speak to you. I wish I could go back, but until I lose another 50-75 pounds, I can't handle the flight - it's just way too uncomfortable.

You'll love it there. So much to see and people are usually very nice. Have a wonderful time.

04-25-2008, 01:49 PM
Schmoodle - I guess you're right about Ozzie's attitude, he really was cocky this season. It should be interesting when the jury gets to have their say. And I totally agree with you about Nat. I'm going to guess that last night when she watched herself that she tried to shrink away into nothing. Not a pretty picture.

Kara - Thanks for the history. I can't imagine living your life, but I would love to try. I love travel and culture and such. I wish you and your family the best!

04-25-2008, 05:31 PM
Aw, thanks Heather! I thought of you last week, actually. We were in Charlotte for three and a half hours waiting for a plane and we went to the USO. It was the nicest one I've ever been in!

Kathleen, thank you so much for the info on your trip! We will actually be getting German drivers' licenses so we have to know all the signs and rules. I've been studying for a month already!

04-25-2008, 05:31 PM
Today's lesson - an hour and a half of yoga is still work! Yoga always sounds so innocent and relaxing. OMG, everything and I mean everything aches a bit. Wow! It's interesting to discover what muscles I haven't been working and which muscles I haven't been stretching properly!

Ruth - I'm just too darned lazy to bother shaving! I'm the same way with my hair, especially in camping season. It has to be washable with a pan of water and finger comb and go. In my corner of the world it isn't all that unusual so it does make it easier. I've never really been one to care what everyone else thinks though. Thus the tattoo at 40 ;)

Nessa - When do we get a picture of your new do??

 Chicks!

Yoga isn't cardio so I need to get my butt moving now. Tonight we're grilling again. Nothing too exciting but I did pick up a couple of packages of marked down mushrooms (I love a bargain) which will get tossed on skewers and onto the grill. Yum!

Have a good afternoon/evening all

04-25-2008, 05:40 PM
I LOVE YOGA BUT IT does kick butt!

04-25-2008, 05:45 PM
Kara - If you ever make it out to Los Angeles be sure to come by the USO at LAX. Everyone that comes by says it's a really good one. (I really wouldn't know since it's the only one I've been to). We're open 24/7 so I know that helps. When I'm there on Saturday morning I bring in eggs and make up egg sandwiches and omlettes. It's so much fun. And like I tell the people who are there....."It's the least that I can do." I love it!!!!

04-25-2008, 05:55 PM
Tom was in your USO back in March! Bet he didn't stand out, though. Tall, bald guys are a dime a dozen in the military...

04-25-2008, 10:13 PM
Hi chicks, back from pizza night, and enjoying my bowl of yogurt.
Kara, "reading his own press" means he is renowned as a Super Survivor and an awesome player and competitor, and it seems like he has been reading that about himself in the media and starting to agree.
Hi Barb, what happened with the car? Is that all fixed?
Yoga rocks! Wish I had time to do it every day, but after my walk and getting in a WATP, I only have time to do it occasionally.
Well, my yogurt is gone, and I've got to fold and put away some laundry and plan our menus and grocery list for the week, plus scrub one bathroom before I go to bed. I won't be home all day tomorrow, so I want to get ahead. We have tickets to Hershey Park tomorrow, crossing my fingers the weather won't be too bad. Cottage, we will wave from the top of the kissing tower. How far are you from Hershey?
Sunday is DD's birthday party, and all of her friends said they would attend!! Aren't like 25 - 30% supposed to respond with regrets? So I guess we'll have about 17 or 18 girls at the roller rink. Hope all goes well. Girls this age are so temperamental.

04-25-2008, 10:39 PM
Schmoodle, I'm about 1 1/2 hours from Hershey Park. I hope you have nice weather for your day at the park. Right now they're calling for occasional thunderstorms.

Sorry not to be too chatty today. I've been so tired all day long, no energy whatsoever. I just woke up from a nice little nap and feel a little better now. I'm just glad I forced myself to do a workout early this morning, so at least I don't have to feel guilty.

04-25-2008, 10:48 PM
Schmoodle, aw, Hershey Park! We used to go every summer when I was a kid. Ride the Comet for me, OK? I love that one! But you have to sit in the front seat. And keep your hands in the air the whole time!

Linda, hope you get a good sleep tonight!

04-25-2008, 10:51 PM
Thanks, Kara. I hope that nap I took didn't ruin it for me tonight.

04-25-2008, 11:06 PM
The comet's the old wooden one, right? None of this upside down stuff for me! We used to go when I was a kid too. At that time you could still go through the factory and see the giant vats of chocolate. And thus began a lifetime love affair...

04-25-2008, 11:09 PM
Schmoodle, you can still take the factory tour. I always wished I could lick the beaters!

04-25-2008, 11:11 PM
I thought they didn't let you in now. They have that little animatronic ride at the entrance to the park about how stuff is made.

04-25-2008, 11:18 PM
I was there last year, and they were still doing the tour then. You ride the train thingy, and have to look through glass windows, but you still get to see everything. Be careful in the candy store!
