I started jogging outside yesterday and as you know it's so different from inside. This morning I noticed I had some muscle pain in my thighs but I went out again. Now I can hardly get up out of a chair because of the stiffness and pain. Anyone have any remedies? I took ibuprofen and had a hot bath but I'm still sore and stiff. I know I'll be fine in a few days but in the meantime any suggestions?

good job, soreness is a sign of work!
take it easy and let yourself recover A heating pad works wonders.
make sure you keep your blood flowing if you are sedentary it will prolong then pain, maybe you could try a little mat pilates or some light stretching and ankle rotations just to get you blood flowing.
Also make sure to give your body nutrients to help it recover like protein, potassium and vitamin C.

strech strecht and more stretching..keep stretching multiple times in the next 48 hrs...and actually a cool bath is better (but harder to do) than a hot bath. Or at least that's what my pt tells me and she works with athletes. Also, if you work the muscle group lightly..ie go for a walk...and helps break down some of the lactic acid that is causing the pain. ANd lots of water.

I agree with the above poster. Step away from the aspirin!! lol Stretching is good before and after the workout, especially after. After my Body Pump class a few weeks ago, I was hella sore. I was so sore that I could not get myself out of the chair either. Someone told me that I should go back to the gym and lift weights and by doing so, I wouldn't be so sore. I thought that was absurd. Why would I go to the gym and do the exact same thing that made me sore, but for whatever reason, it felt like the soreness was cancelled out.
I say all that to say, that maybe you can try to workout the areas that are very sore. That may help you like it helped me. Hope this works!

Rubbing alcohol...rub it in to the skin where it's sore. It's a pretty good muscle relaxer and mild pain reliever, thus the "rubbing" part of the name. I take tylenol too, as a pain blocker, if it's seriously painful, because it helps keep me from clenching up and making it worse, and gives the rubbing alcohol a chance to work, which takes about half an hour. Does the trick for me when I've seriously overdone it.
I was going to recommend the cool bath. I had one last night and it seemed more effective than a hot one. Muscle rub or ibuprofen gel might also be worth a shot, together with a bit of rest if necessary.

Try putting some epsom salt in your bathwater and soaking in it. You can get it in any drugstore near the first aid stuff. Put about a 1/2 cup in your bathwater, and it should help. I often have to do this after a dance seminar.

I try to stay away from taking any sort of painkillers, especially things like ibuprofen and aspirin and especially for muscle pain.
Drink water, ice the muscles, and stretch. Water helps flush out the lactic acid in the muscles and icing reduces the inflammation. When you really workout your muscles (I'm not talking an actual muscle strain), your body has to repair them so you get increased blood flow and an inflammatory response to the injured area - hence, the ice. And yeah, stretch, like everyone else said. My hamstrings are so tight from running and I was so bad about stretching before. I'm finally forcing myself to do it now because they're just too stiff.

Most runners don't run 2 days in a row...it would been better just walking or doing some other cross training exercise, hiking and biking are other options...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I wish I'd read the part about the epsom salt before I had my bath. I have a bag of it in the bathroom. I'll try icing the affected areas, too. I don't think I can take a cool bath...burrr. Too much like winter. And rubbing alcohol never occurred to me. I drank lots of water last night and today and I stretched some but I don't think enough. My son told me to go easy on the pain killers but they sure do help in the short term.
Ha, ha, sore legs and toilets do not go together. :D
