View Full Version : March 2008 Walk/Run Challenge

03-01-2008, 09:29 AM
Well it is time again to pledge your goal. Join in if you haven't keep going if you you have already been here!

I am going for 75 again this month, I was just shy of 60 last month BUT I can do better! :)

03-01-2008, 10:52 AM
I havent made out my training plan yet, so I will put down 135 again. MTA - changing this to 120 for ski trip

Going out for my first run of the month in just a bit...hungover like ****.

03-01-2008, 01:11 PM
I'm new at this, just started week 4 of C25K so I will start with 40 Miles
I did 2 this AM.

03-01-2008, 01:46 PM
starting off well 8.23 mile progression run

0/5 stroller

Oh wait....I forgot I am going on a ski trip for a whole week and wont be running....going to change my target to 120

03-01-2008, 03:26 PM
I'm setting my target for 50 miles this month. I'm going to try to add some weights & swimming this month, so I'm going above Feb's goal, but less than what I actually did in Feb.

0/50 so far!

03-01-2008, 05:00 PM
I am going to try 40 miles this month. Thanks for letting me join in!

03-01-2008, 05:16 PM
:welcome: mothermavis and caitbeans to this corner of 3FC!

5 on the eliptical today.

03-01-2008, 11:19 PM
I am new to these boards, but up to the challenge!

I am going to set a goal of running 35miles.

So far so good, I did 2 miles this morning...and took a 1 mile family walk after dinner.---That was a bonus!

Good luck to everyone!

03-02-2008, 10:17 AM
Welcome to our newcomers! Really glad to see you here!

I'm setting my bar high with 76 miles and 10 / 20 min strength or stretch sessions. I've got an extremely busy Holy Week so I'm only planning 8 miles for that week, but hoping the weather will get nice so I can hit it hard the last week of the month. I've done no walking so far. Two of my children competed in a regional math competition this weekend that is hosted by the Knights of Columbus. While travelling I did swim a lot. One session I did laps for 15 min straight. I haven't swum laps in like 4 yrs so I was pleased with my endurance. Legs and arms are sore, but a good sore. DS took second at regionals and continues to state in April. DD took 4th. Good score, but you have to be 1st or 2nd to continue. I'm very proud!

Have a great Sunday!

03-02-2008, 11:28 AM
Welcome to all the joiners and hope to see some of the oldies back too.

Lovn, congrats to the Wee ones, My son too competes math team and he loves it.

2 miles on the eliptical this morning and I am headed out for a 5 mile hike in a little bit so i will add 7 for today. I think March is going to be MUCH better than February for me :)

03-02-2008, 11:56 AM
Thanks for the warm welcomes!

I ran 2+ miles today plus warmup/warmdown.
Off to a good start! :carrot:

03-02-2008, 01:14 PM
I am going to stick to my goal of 75 miles again this month. I will be working out of town quite a bit this month too. I will be starting a new job tomorrow so I hope the hotel is in a good walking area or has a gym, not sure yet where we are staying.

Angie and I went to church last night and will be going later this afternoon for a "party" for our new building kick-off, so we took the dogs on a Starbucks walk this morning and did a loop through :bunny2: bunny poo :bunny: park.

GOOD LUCK :luck2you: this month ladies!

4/75 miles

03-03-2008, 10:33 AM
I'm trying again for 90, since I didn't make it last month. Good luck everyone!

03-03-2008, 01:01 PM
Happy Monday to all.

I am done for today
2 mile run plus warmup/down

Rest day tomorrow. Will probably do some bike riding (weather permitting).

Good luck to all!!

03-03-2008, 02:33 PM
I will join in 40miles
ran for 2 yesterday

03-03-2008, 02:44 PM
Can anyone join in this challenge? I'd like to finish a lazyman triathalon this month. 2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike ride, and a 26 mi run. They do this at my YMCA, you have a month to finish the full triathalon amount. Not really that hard if your work out 4 times a week. Except I'll skip the bike part. My back can't handle the biking. I havn't worked out for weeks, I need to get back on track.

03-03-2008, 03:52 PM
Minuet, Welcome along. I can't tell you why I90W goes North, but i I can tell you that if I'm in Madison I90W takes me home, but if I'm in LaCrosse I90E takes me home ;) Bet you're thinking, "cripes, she must live in the middle of nowhere!" and you'd be right.

EZ$, good luck in the new job!

2 of 78 miles I know, kinda a slow start

03-03-2008, 05:47 PM

03-05-2008, 08:32 PM
I ran 1.5miles today. It was too hot outside (I don't expect sympathy from all of you experiencing winter) to do any more. I need to figure out how to get an evening run in on days that I work. Problem is that we have an early dinner and I don't enjoy running on a full stomach. Oh well, gotta figure something out...

03-06-2008, 07:00 AM
I did 2 more last night, finished week 4 of c25k

03-06-2008, 10:43 AM
Welp, I only did 3.3 miles last night, instead of the 4 to 4.5 I intended, but I didn't have a snack b/f I ran and ended up a little light headed - so I am going to try and squeeze a few more miles in tonight...

:thanks: LOVNMOM ~ The company I work for builds and remodels car dealerships. It is actually the "same" job just a new project.

Speaking of the new project, we are staying in a hotel that is about 1.5 miles from the mall. I walked each day to one of the restaraunts for dinner and was able to get 15 miles in since we stayed last night and worked today for a few hours. I will be heading back up Monday morning so I hope to get in 12 miles before I come home....at least I hope to come home next friday!!

I hope to get some miles in tonight and tomorrow with these mutts that missed me!!

19/75 MILES

03-08-2008, 06:07 PM
Hi everyone!

0 on Friday, 4 this morning

03-08-2008, 08:06 PM
5 on the TM yesterday plus 30 min of yoga. I tried a new (to me) yoga dvd. I think it would be considered intermediate, because it was much more demanding than any I'd done before. It was suppose to be for strength and it just about whiped me out by the time I was done. I really think it will help with my aging upper body strength. I was suppose to do 4 miles today, but I cleaned the basement, cut one son's hair and my hubby's, saw a movie with my daughters, and made a nice meal so, I'm forgiving myself. I have some clearly laid plans for spring cleaning, much needed spring cleaning, before baseball season starts so I may not make my goal this month, but I'm not giving up yet!!!

15 of 78 limes
50 of 200 min of strength / stretch training

03-08-2008, 11:25 PM
Today was a big workout day for me! I declared it "Biggest Loser Day" and basically devoted my whole day to various forms of exercise. I even marched in place while watching TV (unfortunately, no pedometer so I can't count that). However, for the challenge, I did 2.76 miles running outside and 5.85 miles on the elliptical (8.6 total).

03-08-2008, 11:48 PM
Great job Laura ~ Lovnmom...get those walks in around the ballfield as the kids practice.

Angie took the dogs on a 4 mile run this morning before I got back home for a short week-end....so I did 3.5 on the treadmill this afternoon watching my UCLA BRUINS win!

26/75 MILES

03-10-2008, 11:00 AM
Laura, Hope you enjoyed the race.

EZ$, My children practice 4 miles from home. A straight shot down the bike trail. We usually ride there together and then I walk a 4 mile rural route while they practice. Getting my exercise in is much easier in the summer and I enjoy it. The bike rides are a great way to talk and hear things. Almost as good as the car. It's funny how some people think though. I've actually had parents tsk tsk me for "making" my children ride their bikes AND practice. Last summer they were 10 and 11 yrs old. It was a piece of cake for them. As it should be. It isn't all McD's fault our youth are heavy!!!

Liligurl, That's so awesome. I too hope everything flies right along and you are both holding a son before long!!

L, you've been busy. Good job!

I don't have any miles to report, but wanted to pop in anyway. 64 people from my church went to an indoor waterpark yesterday. I had so much fun. Slide after slide with my children. I wanted to talk about this here, because you will understand....I felt so awesome. Other mothers, younger and thinner, wandered around exhausted basically just trying to be patient until the bus took us all home again. Some never even put on a swimsuite. Now, I know people have different personalities, but I can say from experience your level of fitness can be a driving force in what you like and don't like. For many of these women it was obviously just too much work to haul tubes up and the stairs etc....I know, because I've been there. " Mommy's just going to read her book and relax. I'll be right here if you need me." I'm not that mom anymore and I'm so grateful. Thanks for letting me share. I'm hoping to get 7 miles done today. I hope it warms up enough so some of them can be done outside. It's below zero again this a.m. blah!!!

Hey Lovn, great job! I am with you. The kids karate place is about a mile and 1/2 away. We walk or ride bikes whenever possible.

Today is school decision day. My older son has applied out to new schools for next year. 1 yes and 1 no so far, 3 more to hear from!

Auctions will be quiet for the next few weeks as the schools are on break, we are going to visit the outlaws this week to play some golf and walk in the sun. Looks like 60's where they are which is far better than the 20's here!

I am off to take the kids and friends to the arcade today. Miss Chick will get in a walk with me later! I will need the quiet :)

03-10-2008, 01:25 PM
Ran 3 miles today.

03-10-2008, 01:27 PM
liligurl - congratulations!!!!!! that is awesome!

lovnmom- good for you for feeling awesome! I can totally relate..... I didn't think a year ago I would ever be comfortable in a bathing suit again. I took DS swimming this weekend and was definitely the fittest mom there. DH said I really stood out. It made me feel great!

2 quick ones last night, and 4 this morning

03-10-2008, 05:51 PM

3 this afternoon, I needed the time to clear my head from all of the school stuff, 1 yes 1 no and 2 waitlist so far, 1 more to heat from. We were suprised about the waitlists, we thought 1 ould be a no and the other was a saftey and we were shocked to find out he did not get in. Anyway he is ok with all of it so far.

03-10-2008, 07:01 PM
I know i'm a bit late but I am rather new here and would love to join this thread! I'm aiming for 25 miles this month. It's a start!

So far: 13.5/35

03-11-2008, 04:56 PM
Welcome happyteacher, 1 mile walked is better than 20 min on your behind!!!

L, Is your son heading off to college or does he have his choices of high school or prep?

WTG Baskgal!

I got 5 miles in outside. It is simply beautiful. Yes, I still had to wear my ear band, scarf, gloves and long johns, but no coat. Some places were really cool. The ice is still an inch or more thick in some spots on the road, but with these little rivers running through them. The sounds and the sun are just what an ole gal needs. I've been a bit edgy because I'm behind my scheduled miles for the month, but I only have 8 miles scheduled for next week, because of my need to spring clean before Easter gets here. I realized this morning that I have 3 of the 5 magor cleaning jobs done already. If I can keep my pace all I'll have to be concerned with next week is walking the miles I'm behind this week. That will be really nice. To take long walks every day of Holy Week rather than rush around cleaning and worrying. I think God shuffled my schedule for me, because He knew better!!

20 of 76 miles

2 more while the kids got their hair cut

03-11-2008, 09:13 PM
2 quick ones today, I need to take miss chick on a long one tomorrow since we will spend about 16 hours in the car on Thursday to get to the outlaws in NC! I can't wait to walk on the beach and play a little golf, BUT I am most looking forard to NOT putting on a winter coat for a week :)

My son has applied to high schools. Our public school is having some issues. That is about all I will say :)

03-11-2008, 10:57 PM
4.9 miles outside in the dark tonight! Scary. I'll be more careful in the future about when I start running AND the turns I take (I only meant to do 3 miles).

2.25 walking

03-13-2008, 12:32 PM
L, Hope you're enjoying your trip.

I was able to get out early this a.m and do the "big loop" for 7 miles. It's 37* w/ 12 mph winds and lots of sunshine. It feels down right balmy folks. I'm gonna do 20 min of slow e z yoga now. The tea pots on to enjoy when I'm done and then it's off to work for a couple hours. My next spring cleaning to do is my bedroom. Too many things I didn't know what to do with have ended up in there. It's time to make it all cozy again instead of cluttered. I hope you are all enjoying pleasant weather and happy days!

03-13-2008, 08:51 PM
I took the day off from running today so I cannot add toward my goal, however, I did take the time to ride my bike. I enjoyed the beautiful afternoon and rode 7 miles. I am not going to plan tomorrow's exercise. We'll see what kind of a day it turns out to be.....run or bike day.....

Still at 16.5/35

03-13-2008, 11:08 PM

I got back home a few hours ago, from being out of town all week, in time to take my mutts on a 3 mile walk. Angie has been a little under the weather this week so she hasn't been able to take them. Hope she feels better soon, she has a 1/2 marathon coming up this month and we have a 5K in April.

I did get some miles in for the week even though I was out of town.

EZ$, Thanks for the compliment. Praying your new commute is safe and uneventful.

L, I so wish I was on the beach. We were experiencing lovely spring weather the past few days only to wake to flurries and burr cold again today. Giving me the blahs. Glad your having a terrific visit and loads of fun.

I got in 4.5 with a friend on Sat. It was just what I needed. It was sunny with a brisk breeze, lots of chatting followed by honeyed chai tea and more chatting. It's going to be a long week with a lot of responsibilities, but I'm caught up with my miles and that's all good.

Hope everyone has a terrific Monday!

Went to Boston for the weekend = I am estimating 2 miles walking around going from bar to bar, to the hotel, to dinner, across the park, etc. on Saturday. Then it was 2 miles from the hotel to the parade, then 2 miles back to the hotel:

I got 4 miles in with a friend today. It was terrific. We walked a loop we haven't done in some time. It has 2 nice long steep hills with limited traffic. I surprised her with a home made strawberry pie. She's not trying to lose weight so it wasn't sabatage lol I'm on track with my spring cleaning. It's going to be really busy the next few days but, it's all good.
Have a great evening.

Hi all, I didn't forget about the challenge, really! I have been running in between adoption meetings and hubby's doctor's appointments...
Adoption front- going strong and getting closer everyday:yay:
Hubby's surgery update -
Left hip replacement surgey on May 1st
Right hip replacement surgey on May22nd....it's going to be a FUN summer, for him! All he has to do is recover...I, on the other hand, have to drive him everywhere for 8 weeks, I have to do laundry (HE DOES IT NOW, NOT ME), I have to walk the dogs, the Boxer would be fine but if the Beagle spots a squirrel he's screwed (she would run for the hills) I will be responsible for all grocery shopping and all errands that need to be run, ARRR!:tantrum:
I'm spoiled I know!!! I really do, I know I've had it GREAT for so long that I should welcome the change right? If I keep telling myself this I may believe it in the future, hee hee.
However the only obstacle we face now is the replacement parts are going to be metal on metal (replacemnet for metal is 25-30 yrs) He is having a metal allergy test done in April to guarentee that he will not reject the new hip (parts) If he does test positive for a metal allergy he is having plastic on plactic and will need to be replaced again in 7-10 years because of his age (36). :dunno:
Obviously we are hoping for NO allergies!!!:crossed:
He is also donating his own blood for the surgey, so that's a load off our minds.
Ok, Ok ...the running totals for the month are ....74/100

Let me introduce you to pea pod! Groceries delived to the door all you have to do is order them online!

AND find a wash and fold. I have one near the kids school and it is a treat once in a while BUT i do use it when we have a lot of company and I have a ton of sheets and towles or when we come back from vaccation!

GREAT about the adoption stuff! I am very excited for you!

we left NC this moring at 5 am and got home just a little while ago. More junk food than I will admit to right now and the stomach ache to prove it!

Tomorrow will be a long walk as Dixie was with us and it was a long day for her.
I did get 3 miles in yesterday and lots of fetch on the beach so she did fine!
I will add it to my total tomorrow :)

03-25-2008, 05:52 PM
lilligurl, I'm so excited for you and your upcoming motherhood .I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for no metal allergies.

EZ$, What can I say ummm I'm so jealous you got to go to games. I had to watch my Badgers at home. I absolutely love this time of year. My children are not playing sports themselves and I can consentrate on the tournaments.

L, Glad to hear you had a good vacation.

It was one wild Holy Week around here. My youngest celebrated his first communion on Thursday. I head up the church youth group and we hosted the pancake brkfst Easter morning. We served 120+ and everything went really smooth. I'll admit I had everything organized quite well and no one except me worked much more than a 2 hour stretch. The kids made some good money towards a trip to New Orleans for next summer. I also had 28 guests for dinner at my home with over 200 eggs hid in the snow for the kiddies. It was a blast! Needless to say I walked very little last week and ate pretty much whatever I wanted. I did get out and do 5 miles alone today plus 4 with a friend and I walked 2 last Mon I hadn't reported. My goals going to be hard to hit, but all in all it's been a good month even if I don't make it. Congrats to those of you who have already hit your goals. Great job!!!

I as without a car today and walked to town to get it taking the long route with the pup, brisk out and my pace as I had to get there before it closed. MAJOR bucks, on a 60,000 mile service including new brakes! BUT safe again for the family :)

Well we are getting closer to May 1st and hubby's hip surgeries. He is not excited but he can't wait for the pain to go away. He will be donating his own blood for the 2 operations, so we both feel better about that.
We have started back on the WW hardcore ths week and so far I have already lost 5lbs (he is down 7). I really do remember this working in the past but it really is mind over matter...If I set my mind to it, it really doesn't matter that I'm not eating a ooey gooey bacon cheeseburger! Hee hee
Actually we decided to go hardcore becuase of the surgeries coming up, as he will not be exercising for approx. 30 days: then he can get back in the pool and rehab and get the joints working properly again. He alreadys says he can't wait to get back on his bike (cycling) Doc says 5 weeks post the second hip..he's already counting.
On the adoption front, things are moving along but slowly!!! We both celebrate our birthdays in June and are hoping for a great gift, the placement of our child.

Now for the running totals as of today 101.5/100

;)*;) "Nothing tastes as good, as being thin feels" ;)*;)

Ahh... we just got more news on hubby's surgeries...he has to have raditation prior to both surgeries due to the large amount of bone spurs he has acquired. The surgeon hopes that by ungoing radiation it will prevent more bone spurs from growing in the future. Hubby is really not happy, but understands the reasoning. He can't wait for this week to be over (lots of OT at the prison) so that he can get back in the pool and take some pressure off the joints.

Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!

lilligurl, great job getting all those miles in when you have so much going on in your life. My prayers are with you both.

EZ$, How nice that you could all be together for Easter. I love when everyone's together.

L, have a good time in NY!!

Wow, did I have a walk today. I did the 7 mile route I've been enjoying for years, but today a farm dog was out w/o any masters. Uh huh, she bullied me terribly. Growling, hair raised, shoulders bunched, tail curled. She stayed with me for about a tenth of a mile. Yes, she did bite me. About half way through our stroll together. Nothing serious. She left teeth marks and one tooth just broke the skin. I'll tell you it was very scary. I love dogs and thankfully remained calm (on the outside). I continued to order her home like I knew I was in charge and not her. She kept head butting my rear and bashing into me legs from both the right and left! Scary!!!! I really think she wanted me to run. Just as soon as I hit the edge of their land she went back home. Being a small rural community we've known the family forever. They assured me her shots were up to date. I let them know I'd be walking by about the same time tomorrow. They said if they hear her bark they'll call her in. I said no, come out and introduce me to her. I plan to keep doing this walking thing for a long time. I can't let this ground me.

Enjoy your Friday all!

4/5 strollering.

03-30-2008, 04:48 PM
I haven't updated for ages, but have made it to 175.9/135, although about 26 of those were walking rather than running. I still hit target on runs though, and I've got another run due tomorrow to finish the month off. I'm not sure how long it will be, I'm winding down before my marathon now, so it depends how my leg feels when I get there.

03-30-2008, 06:30 PM
Angie and I did a 5K this morning with our dogs, a fundraiser for a local humane society. Looks like I will be short of goal again this month...oh well...many more miles than a year ago!!

67/75 MILES

I had computer problems last night so I was unable to add my last run. I ran 4 miles today, not by choice, believe me. My body was not ready to go from 3 miles to 4 miles in one run, but it started to rain and I really wanted to get home. I do not enjoy running in the rain. Anyhoo, I am 42/35 for the month of March. Hopefully I will be up to a four mile without feeling ill by the end of April!

See you on the April boards..... :)
