South Beach Diet - Weekend Chat - February 23 & 24
02-23-2008, 07:56 AM
Good morning! I'm finally up early enough to get us started. Hershey is still asleep which gives me a bit of time before I "leap" into the morning routine.
Slept a bit better last night with my new pain meds but the knee is still pretty inflamed. I suspect an infection :( but will know for sure on Monday when we get the blood test results.
Not much on the agenda except three exercise and ice sessions plus some quilting preparation. I need to get five more blocks ready to work on while I watch TV. It assuages the guilt.
What's happening for your weekend? :cofdate:
02-23-2008, 08:12 AM
Morning Ruth. We had snow last night, I'll be shoveling this morning. I have one week before starting work to goof off. I am trying to talk my dad who lives in Indiana into starting South Beach. He has a popcorn hang up. I was trying to explain to them they could accomodate the popcorn need. We didn't have much snow just about 6 cm. enough to scrape.
02-23-2008, 08:13 AM
What kind of quilt are you doing? I just finished place mats and am getting ready to do a big one. I"ll probably do a block quilt. Applique is hard for me.
02-23-2008, 08:41 AM
Ruth, so sorry you are having more problems with that knee!!! We have to have you up and about and on the go by spring!! Tell your doctor we said so!!! No more pain for Ruth!!!!!!
Spirit, hope the snow shoveling goes well and that this is the last time this year.
Me: nothing much happening. Going to give the fluidity bar a whirl in just a bit since my toe seems to be better. It's been a week and I don't want to get out of the habit. Going to make some Belgian Waffles when everyone is up and about, then, bringing my Mom to visit friends in a nursing home (which sounds weird, because this couple were the "poster children of partying" back in "the day") My parents whole crowd were mega partiers and it's strange to see them "old". Afterwards, going to do a little shopping and hopefully just hang out around here and maybe do a little gardening if weather permits later on.
02-23-2008, 08:47 AM
Good Saturday Morning!
Ruth sorry to hear about the knee  All will be just fine come Monday
Enjoy your day Cat
ME- I've already got my before bfast walk in and the rest of the day I will be painting the spare room and doing laundry and running errands and this evening we are going to Teds for dinner & then to the sporting goods store to get my heart rate monitor.
Be back in a bit

Good morning from New Jersey! I'm spending the weekend with Monica and the girls for a nice change. They're at our house most weekends, so this is a nice change. This morning we're just going to hang out here and enjoy the opportunity to chat with my son-in-law until he has to leave for his show. This afternoon Kara and I are going to try to get together, that should be fun!
I sure hope your new pain medication is just what you've been waiting for, Ruth.
GONNA, it sounds as if you have a busy day planned!
Cat, I'm glad your toe is better, but be careful using your bar. Did you find the perfect spring outfit yesterday? Those Belgian waffles sound real good this morning!
Spirit, enjoy your snow! We sent it up there to you when we were done with it yesterday, LOL!
Monica is busily making breakfast, so I'd better go lend a hand. Have a happy Saturday, everyone!

Cat I had a lovely walk to the grocery store. My husband wanted kidney so I ordered some. At least it wasn't snow with concrete added like it usually is. Thats one thing I miss about Maine the snow is usually fluffy and light... not to bad to shovel even though there is a lot of it. Fitday doesn't have how many calories it is walking through knee deep snow..My legs shake afterwards.

Ruth - I sure hope you don't have an infection but at least you are getting it looked at. I hope the pain meds help.
spirit - I hope your snow is gone soon. I'm ready for summer myself.
Cat - Brian and I need to start trying to decide what we are going to plan around the pool. I really need to add more dirt in the back but that's going to be expensive. I love your plants.
gonna - Sounds like a productive day. Have fun!
cottage - Enjoy your weekend.
Me - I was so tired last night. I think that 3 hour deposition stressed me out more than I thought. I sure do hope Robert and I can agree on a settlement. If he proposes something reasonable then it is probably better than I would get agreed by the court.
Brian and I are going over to the Math, Science and Technology magnet school this morning for something about robotics. He's been in the club a couple of years and I guess there is a competition April 5th and he can find out about it today. I did tell he that he will need to decide if he wants to do that or go to Camporee which is the same weekend. I was going to try to trade weekends with Robert so he could go to Camporee but if he wants to do Robotics instead I won't bother.

I got the room primed (it was red) and will soon be putting the color on. Already picked up the clothes from the cleaners and now I am eatin my snack & chatting with you gals.
Cottage enjoy your weekend
Barb I think hat it's aweome all the time you spend with Brian. You should pat yourself on the back.

Good morning from New Jersey from me, too! I just got back from an interesting run that was about halfway on unshovelled sidewalks. There was only an inch or maybe two, but it was interesting nonetheless. Now I have to get a shower so Linda doesn't have to wrinkle up her nose this afternoon!
Ruth, I sure hope you get that infection cleared up, if that is the case! Enjoy your morning.
Jen, glad you enjoyed your walk to the store! I miss walking to the store a little. If the closest store wasn't the most expensive, I might keep it up, but it's easier to take the car to the store I like better.
Cat, hope your workout goes well! No dropping the bar on more poor little piggy toes!
Gonna, don't you love walking before breakfast? Gives a good start to the day!
Linda, can't wait to see you this afternoon!
Barbara, your afternoon sounds so interesting! Will Brian be building his own robot? He has to be the coolest kid on the block! (Can't quite help it, probably, with the coolest mom on the block by his side and all...)
I just finished my oatmeal - crockpot steel cut oats with craisins and sliced apples, cinnamon, chopped walnuts, and agave nectar. SOOOO good! Next I'm trying dried cherries.

Barb, I am just chomping at the bit to get outside and plant stuff. But I need to wait a few more weeks...usually it's safe after the middle of March. I have my square foot veg. garden all planned out and all the pieces are ordered. It's going to just be 12x12 feet with 4 3x3 planters (http://www.gardeners.com/Raised+Garden+Bed/VegetableGardening_RaisedBeds,34-381,default,cp.html) with paths between them and a cute little fence (http://www.improvementscatalog.com/product/id/102968.do) around the whole thing. I want a tree rose in a big pot in the middle or a solar fountain. I eventually want brick paths, but for now, it will have to just be mulch.

I have those beds and absolutely love them! We should own stock in Gardener's Supply we shop there so often. I made a mistake the first year and connected two sets to make a 9x3 bed - don't do that :) Last year I had to take them apart because they were bulging too much. That was a big job I didn't need! We have 6 of the beds and they are a great way to garden in a small space. Okay, now my brain is in garden land again :)

Cat you can probably put in early peas and lettuce now. Even if you do get a bit frosty they'll do fine with a little cover. I started them in mid May in Maine. And we're not usually clear of frost up here sometimes til mid June. I think NS is earlier than where I was in Maine. Most plant here in May
02-23-2008, 03:25 PM
Kara - Our school is going to send two teams to the robotics competition. This is the first year we have competed since they just started robotics in our school last year. Yes, they build their own robots and will need to change attachments in the middle of each heat. They have various items to drag back and then some stuff like a tennis ball, rawhide dog bone, and PVC object to lift and put in a bin or in the round PVC "volcano". It really sounds cool. I told his teacher about Camporee and she mentioned it to the organizer. They might try to postpone it a week. Our school has 16 boys in the club and at least 4 if not more are in scouts. I imagine it is similar in other schools.
Cat - I think we can probably plant a few things now. I might put some of the herbs in next to the house. It does look like we have one day next week with a prediction of 31 for the low so we may need to wait a bit longer.
02-23-2008, 05:50 PM
Cat, that fence is so cute!
I love reading about all (of all of you guys') your gardening! I can't wait to get a garden going somewhere that we don't leave after six months!
Barbara, that robotics club sounds like a blast! I hope they postpone the date of the competition so Brian can make both functions.
I just got home from meeting up with Linda! Can I say she is the sweetest person from 3FC I've ever met? ('Course, she's also the first 3FC friend I've met, but she definitely is sweet!) We had a fun chat!
02-23-2008, 08:13 PM
Oh, wow...I just got back from shopping at Target...got a bunch of cute stuff..cute little skirts to wear to work and to wear during the summer to just hang around in....
but...this is the good part...
The skirts were...SIZE SIX, SIZE SIX, SIZE SIX. So, now do I change my goal since I passed it up???? Thankyou, South Beach.
Tonight I am going through my closet and all my fat clothes are going to the church asap.
02-23-2008, 08:58 PM
I've found that the best thing about being smaller (when I *was* smaller) was that there was always more cute stuff on clearance in size six and eight than there is in 12 or 14. I'll be there again...:)
02-23-2008, 09:12 PM
Hey everyone! Made in it to town about an hour ago. I can't believe how well our work went - we were awesome!! (Plus, I don't mind that I saved the Appraisal District some hotel and gas money.) I'm too exhausted to post personals, but I do want to send a  to dear Ruth. I'm sorry your knee is being such a pain.
Now, off to lay on the couch and watch my Spurs. Ahhhh, so good to be home!
02-23-2008, 11:06 PM
Well I got my heart rate monitor and I plan on using it starting tomorrow.
Kara glad your meeting wth Cottage (linda) went well
Kim Glad you made it home safe & sound. I hope your team wins - Go Spurs!
Hi Magnolia glad you checked in
Gotta go watch some tv with dh before bed so I will chat at yall in the morning.
02-24-2008, 08:11 AM
Good Sunday morning. I'm enjoying my tea, but wishing it was coffee. DD and SIL aren't coffee drinkers, so I have to wait until we get to church to have my first cup of the day. :( Carley is singing in the Cherub choir this morning, so I'm looking forward to that.
It was so nice to meet Kara IRL yesterday! Her little ones are just too precious, and are so well behaved! And Kara looks amazing! We're going to try to get together at least one more time while she's here in the states, and I'm looking forward to it.
02-24-2008, 08:49 AM
I love to hear of chicks meeting up for the first time! I've met quite a few 3FC folks IRL and am looking forward to meeting many more. So far: Suzanne 3FC, Jennifer 3FC, Leenie, Jiffypop, LindaBC, Beachgal, Mauvaisrouge, Ellis, Ilene, KarenK, Sandi, LGH, Madcat, Shad, Hollyhock, Carla43, Jane. Mel and Meg. This spring and summer, I intend to add to the list for sure!
Thanks for the concern over my darned knee. I am pretty sure there is an infection as it feels warm most of the time. Blood test results will be in on Monday and I'm pretty sure my doc (not the frassin' surgeon!) will prescribe anti-biotics to see if it clears up without "intervention". :yikes: If I ever get the other knee replaced, I will be changing surgeons - the current guy seems to have slept through the pain management lectures. "Do yoga breathing" indeed!
Lovely sunshine is happening today. I just may bundle up and have my afternoon herb tea on the porch. It's time to "get the house smell off" as my Dad used to say.
Have a great Sunday.
02-24-2008, 09:39 AM
Good morning Chickies!
I woke up to more lovely white snow coming down I am ready for spring...
Had a wonderful trip last weekend to see my parents in Gulfport, MS...
Cat the day we went to Oceansprings it poured buckets so did not get to see much of the shops, we did go to New Orleans to walk around and had a lovely time.
I had a hard time staying op while there my parents did not have alot that was op and I still have a hard time saying no to my parents, but came back and got back on track again.
Enjoy your Sunday morning, I think I am going to put on my workouts clothes and do a dvd before everyone wakes up.
02-24-2008, 10:42 AM
I feel good about what I've accomplished so far this weekend. Brian and I put down 9 bags of topsoil and planted quite a few plants and cleaned the pool. Then I got the house vacuumed last night and mopped this morning. The grocery list is made and it is almost time to leave for Faith Formation and church. I'll stop at the grocery store on the way back from church. I do have a meeting this afternoon with my program director to plan the budget for Twilight Camp. My eating has not been so great and I haven't gotten any exercise. If the weather is nice later, maybe we can go for a bike ride depending how long it takes to plan the budget.
02-24-2008, 11:00 AM
Hi chicks, soooo good to be back home and sleep in my own bed after 3 nights of not much sleep. I feel so much better today. Yesterday was another pain in the butt travel day, starting with the lady at the ticket counter accidentally hiding my driver's license under a piece of paper. After I'd torn apart my luggage, gone back to my rental car, and was about to go back to the hotel to look, I went back to her one more time, she looked down and said "Oh! Here it is! oops!" I refrained from killing her and made it onto the plane by the skin of my teeth. I also hadn't realized my travel agent had me flying into a different airport than I flew out of, so I had to take the train from Washington to Baltimore to pick up my car. Some trips are just cursed by the travel gods, I guess! Here's an interesting thing - Chelsea Clinton was three rows in front of me on the flight from El Paso. She looked tired. I'm sure she's working her butt off for Mama these days.
So, I'll be doing mountains of laundry today, and desperately need to run by the grocery store. I'm going to do the WATP DVD this morning, and this afternoon I think I'll take the kids up to the YMCA and check out the indoor pool there. I've been thinking about joining. And while we're up that way we'll pay a visit to my Grandmother.
I was great on plan until last night, when I indulged in many peanut M&Ms.
Ruth, poor knee. I'm sorry you're having such a tough recovery. Enjoy the sunshine!
Spirit, I haven't grown lettuce in a couple of years, I'm going to try again this spring. One year I had a great crop and it was the best thing to walk out and pick your dinner salad. The next year it didn't do so well.
Kara, I found my remote control so I can try the 2 mile workout this morning!
cottage, hope you had a fun weekend in Jersey! Wish I could have joined you and kara. I'll bet you guys had fun!
Cat, have you done the square foot gardening yet? It works great. I have the book and use the techniques in my veggie garden. I call it gardening for engineers. Those walls look very cool though, I may have to think about getting some of those. Congrats on your NSV!!
Kim, glad you are home safe and sound. I'm sure you enjoyed sleeping in your own bed last night as much as I did.
Hi Pearlrose, glad you are home and back on track!
Wow, Barb, you are a machine this weekend! I love weekends like those, it makes it so much easier to face Monday!
It took me forever to get this post written and posted! My MIL interrupted with her customary Sunday morning call. I should have thought first and not answered the phone. I hate when DH is away and I have to deal with her. She always ends up crying and telling me how she has no desire to live anymore. She said she visited her doctor last week and he's very concerned about her health, she could go any time, but that's okay because her life is over and she's only living now for her children, blah, blah, blah, boo-hoo. I know I sound terrible and should try to have more patience with her, but the reality is she's healthy as a horse, and just likes to make her sons feel bad. She is the greatest master of guilt I've every met. I consider myself very lucky that there is an ocean between us! Well, I'm off the hook until next Sunday, and I think I'll go put up a sticky by the phone to remind me not to take any calls next Sunday AM.
Hope I haven't missed anyone. Have a great Sunday chicks!

Schmoodle, on the square foot garden..yep. Had one years ago when my kids were little. Worked out great (made of railroad ties) I had a fenced off section of the yard and put the kids "baby pool" in the middle of it and they could play in the pool while I worked in the garden. The house and husband I had then are but a memory along with the garden!
Sorry about the MIL. I am so blessed to have the greatest MIL ever. She is precious and cute and funny and is a party animal. You say party and she's headed for the door. She is close to 80 going on 20. She's a great friend and I miss her living in N.O. (lost her house in Katrina). She now lives in Houston with my BIL and his family. She is coming to stay with us for a couple of weeks at the end of March.
Don't get me started on my ex MIL. Battleax. Nightmare. good riddance. One of those "no matter what you do it's never right" people.
02-24-2008, 01:40 PM
Hiya chicks! Hope your day is as beautiful as mine. There is not a clound in the sky.
Dh & I got up at 6 this morning and had breakfast and headed to the beach so he could fish and I walked some laps on the beach - thats a tough workout on the legs but great cardio for the heart.
We are getting ready to head to the ball park for softbal practice, there I plan to do some more walking on the track.
Schmoodle glad your back home
Check in with you gals a bit later
02-24-2008, 04:16 PM
Checking in real quick before I am off to a kids party and grocery shopping. Have a question hoping one of the cookers in the group can answer. Have a cookie recipe I LOVE and want to convert 1 c sugar and 1 c brown sugar to splenda and agave nectar. I know I can use all of the amount in splenda but I really don't like the taste. I tried maple sf syrup instead of splenda and regular sugars but it tasted to much like coffee to me and I am not a coffee drinker. If there is a hint to using these like adding something else I would take it. I would really like to try just agave maybe what do you think? If it turns out I will let you know but if I could make these cookies :T oh maaan :hyper:for me.
Ok the kids are yelling at me to go will check in later.
02-24-2008, 05:16 PM
Back from the ball park - got 4 miles in. My heart rate monitor is great!
In the next lil bit it's off to church & then applebees for dinner.
PHX not to sure about the recipe but one of the other smart chicks here will know for sure
02-24-2008, 08:36 PM
Hey chicks, back from MIA. Life has gotten in the way of computer time lately. I have been super busy with dance fundraising. It is always that way this time of year. But I am going to be better at checking in this week. Cuz I miss you guys. Of course I know sooner get in here that I have to drive a friend home and get a load of laundry done that is needed for tomorrow. Take care chicks. I will pop in tomorrow.
02-24-2008, 10:24 PM
Also back from MIA! (I hope I'm back)
Just checking in to say hello to everyone. SB has been going okay, not awesome (working late drives me to the unhealthy choices when we all put in our orders for dinner). BUT...I've been maintaining my weight loss so far, and I take that to mean I'm not making such bad decisions all the time.
I'm going to throw in a few days of P1 here to get all into things again.
Will check in again tomorrow! Hope everyone is really well. :)
02-24-2008, 11:00 PM
Hey gals! Glad to hear the travellers made it home safely (although not all sanely ;)) and that everyone seems to have had a productive weekend! I just spent the day with my grandparents and had a really nice time. I *did* have to refrain from laughing when my grandmother served the healthiest un-South Beach dinner there ever could be - baked potato, boiled corn, boiled carrots, and mashed potatoes. Bless her heart! She really tries to make me a great vegetarian dinner, and I ate every bite of the small servings I took of each one. Tomorrow I'll be super good and I'm sure it won't affect me too badly, especially since God will see that I ate out of the goodness of my heart (and to avoid being banished from the family for insulting my grandmother by not eating her cooking...).
I'm about to head to bed. "See" you all in the morning!
