I just had to share. I bought the thing on clearance for like 3 bucks and thought there is no way that thin piece of stuff that looks like shelf liner is going to be that supportive on my 300 pound body. I've used it a couple of times at home—on the carpet—and it's worked just fine. I brought it to work with me this morning to do yoga on my lunch break and it worked amazing on the extremely threadbare carpet on concrete floor. My lower back didn't hurt at all. Again, it was awesome. I think I may just switch up my exercising and plan on 2-3 days a week at work doing yoga rather than the WATP.
I thought about getting one, and then thought (like you) there was no way it would help cushion anything being so flimsy. I guess I was wrong! Now I'm going to have to go shopping for a yoga mat after your great experience.

Thank you so much for your post. I have been doing floor, stretch cord and yoga exercise. I happen to love the Leslie Sansone videos ( I think anyone at any weight could do them ). The floor ( even with carpet ) is still very hard. I saw the mats at the store and thought the same thing. What good could those thin things be. I am going to get me one now.
I got started doing yoga with the "Yoga for the Rest of Us" videos. I actually prefer the second, "More Yoga for the Rest of Us" - it's not necessary to do the first one first.
I recently tried the "Just My Size Yoga" and I thought it was okay, but not as good as Yoga for the Rest of Us. It has less stretching, which helps me a lot, and I found the instructions/directions to be less clear. Also, the Yoga for the Rest of Us shows you adaptive movements throughout the video, and the Just My Size has a few of them in a special features part of the video.
I think either one would be a good place to start. Definitely make sure to get a yoga mat. I found that you can get them pretty cheaply at TJ Maxx. ($8-$12ish).
Dawnyal: That's cool about your mat! I think we may have the same kind of mat!
As far as videos, I have the Just My Size Yoga and really like it. (That being said--it has been weeks since I did it!) I will have to keep my eye out for Yoga for the Rest of Us.
Oh, and if you think you may be too big to do yoga....One of the contestants on the Biggest Loser (Trent, an ex football player that weighed 350 lbs) was doing yoga with Bob the Trainer and was doing moves I didn't think possible!
You can also get Yoga mats for cheap at Ross Dress for Less. For some reason, the one near me puts the yoga mats near the men's underwear!
The instructor in the Just My Size dvd also has a book out-her name is Megan Garcia. I think the title is "Mega Yoga" I've seen it at Borders and Barnes and Noble.
Yoga for the Rest of us is often broadcast on public tv during their fund drives.
