Okay, everyone, as is the tradition, I start a new thread when I personally start a new challenge.

Below is a short explanation of how this challenge works so all you newcomers can take a look and decide if you're game or not! I hope you are! Hop aboard and enjoy the ride. We've got a great bunch of supportive people, so I hope you'll give us a try. A lot of people try for a while and then disappear.. I hope some of you will keep trying. There is NO shame in starting over. Remember, it's not over till you give up. And our motto around here is:

NEVER GIVE UP!!...Just start OVER!!


It works like this: you decide you'll do something for 21 days straight, every single day, so keep it doable. Then you count through 21.....and if you flub it, you MUST go back to zero and start over again. Everyone will be on different days. You can start anytime. At the beginning of the challenge you declare what level it is -- Level 1, 2, or 3. Level 1 means you feel it's a relatively easy challenge for you and means you only give yourself ONE pause day (see explanation of pause days below). Level 2 would give you two pause days and so on...
And taking NO pause days is what I'm going to call "aceing a challenge," as in "I'm aiming on aceing this one!" Yowzah!! :cb:

With a pause day you pause in your counting and continue the next day with the number you left off with. Pause days are NOT substitutes for days, i.e. Day 12 -- Day 13 -- Pause Day -- Day 14..... I suggest taking a pause day late in the game (better to go back to Day 1 early on) if you need a break or screw up when you're well into the challenge, meaning, when you're on Day 15 or something like that.

In any case, the trick is to keep going. The momentum builds and it's great incentive to stick to your guns, cause if you don't.........back to START you go. :( And the really great thing about this challenge is that you are forming new habits that will wipe out the old! AND, you get to do it with a great bunch of really supportive people to whom you are accountable! :grouphug:


In the interest of maintaining structure, a sense of solidarity and facilitating support I ask anyone who wishes to join this thread to please strive to follow the following guidelines while participating in this challenge and in posting.

1. Although this is a fabulous support group, the focus is to be on your CHALLENGE/S and/or other people's challenge/s AND weight loss, whether your challenge is about it or not. Please keep the challenge a priority, although we welcome chattiness! :lol: This means tell us what day you're on when you post and it's a good idea to make regular mention of just what your challenge is. This an action-based thread. Our members are ON a challenge, RESTARTING a challenge, or just in between and looking to start up again REAL SOON. ;) We also welcome posts from admirers, encouragers, and old friends!

2. Please refrain from posting food logs or recipes, except where you are really looking for help and advice on your eating. If journaling is your challenge, please keep the journaling off the thread and in a notebook or blog and just tell us if you've done what you set out to do. We have ALL types of dieters here, low-carb, high-carb, low-fat, high-fat, vegetarians, meat-lovers...please use simple mentions if you have something you want to share and then links and/or private messages to do so.

3. Please do NOT go into glowing accounts of any slipups, food indulgences or binges, what we here call "food porn." Simple mentions are fine, but use of smilies :censored: :tape: etc. as substitutes where possible is encouraged.

4. Please keep this a secular thread. Of course, passing references to your beliefs, a bit of introduction about your beliefs, brief faith-related words of encouragement are fine. :angel:

5. Please show support, support, support! This is key. :grouphug: You can waffle on about yourself but please, at least occasionally,come up and look around at others and what they are doing and MENTION it with words of encouragement and/or praise or sympathy. We understand "busy," poor computer connections, and bouts of self-pity and life problems where the focus turns to "me" and dealing with those problems, but these should be temporary, not a habit! ('cept in the computer case.)

In conclusion, let me say, the above are just that, GUIDELINES. Please realize that these guidelines have been added in an attempt to keep this a supportive and beneficial thread, at the LEAST, to those who need it MOST, those for whom weight loss is the hardest and, more often than not, the most crucial as well as for those who still, perhaps despite great success, know all too well that the road they walk will always be a slippery one. :^:

The guidelines are also meant to cultivate an atmosphere of consideration and concern for ALL, not individually, but AS A GROUP.

Ok, all. As you can see, the new thread is up. I'm starting a new challenge. For now, it's simply a continuation of the last one. And that is, steering clear of alcohol, processed foods and sugar and cutting WAY down on coffee. Also, I will keep a food journal that also notes changes in my skin, energy, etc. The only way I can call a day OK is ALSO if I drink homemade vegetable juice or some other blended veggie thing, have a big salad or a vegetable stew, soup or sauce (that means homemade with LOTS of veggies). So, that's it. Anything is allowed in small amounts but I know what's not supposed to be there. I am striving to notch this challenge up a level above last time's. Here we go! :cb:

I guess I would be a "passer-by", not really a lurker because I've never noticed you guys before.

I think I have this figured out, left me know if I'm off --
Starting tomorrow (2/4), Day 1 :) -- I will do the following for 21 days =
Stick to my calorie range with healthy foods.
Drink as much fluid (water, diet/caff-free soda) as humanly possible.
Exercise 30 minutes at least 4 days a week.

I think I'd better do a Level 2 -- just to be safe, but I'm looking forward to not using these -- we'll see.

Hope I did this right, looking forward to getting to know everyone and most importantly, making it to the end of the challenge without dropping out or screwing up!!!

I decided to quit the sit down for lunch challenge. I had a few days were I just didn't eat lunch, so it doesn't really work. I'll still try to sit down to eat, how about that? Yes, I like that. Sit down to eat anything! But I'm not making it a challenge.
The Super Bowl was fun, and (in my opinion anyway) the good guys won. It was an exciting game too, right up to the end. And I had beer. Yum. But I'm back on the no beer for another 9 days. Yikes. But I can do it!

Hey all. Glad to see we've made the transition to this thread and picked up a newbie on the way! :spin: Welcome shelby! :welcome:
Well, I didn't do too good yesterday. I got the greens in but unbelievably went out after work even though I'm still sick. Oh, I'm sick all right! :mad: Pathetic. It was a hellish day. I can't believe the mess that place is in and how I am supposed to try to keep together the chaos. I don't know what it'll do to me in the way of experience. I'm learning some very hard lessons about human nature in the meanwhile. Anyhow, here's to going at it yet again. Green elixir (that's my vegetable juice) here I come!!


shelby -- Your challenges sound great. The exercise one doesn't fit the parameters since it's something that must be done EVERY day. But, you can still just include it as an extracurricular. :lol: No problem there. Or, you can just exercise every day but know yourself what that exercise constitutes in the way of intensity and duration. I mean, we all move around every day, right? In any case, very glad to have you aboard and yes, I sure hope you stick it out. Best of luck! :goodluck:

Apple -- Well, if you didn't have lunch then I suppose you can't sit down, right? I would call it a go. I didn't see the game but we put it on the front page. It was a very weak day here in the way of news and we had a guy over there covering it. Sounds like it was an amazing game. The score looked more like a baseball game. It must have been pretty boring to watch a defense game like that. I know. I was growing up in the Steel Dynasty! The winning pass must have been a thrill for Giants' fans. Hope you enjoyed the brew and are ready to meet the final days like a trooper! OK, ok, getting to those vegetables.... :^:

Red -- I got it now -- exercise is out (well, I'll still do it, but it won't count) -- there is no way I can promise myself every day, the kid's would never let me!!

Water -- done!
Calories -- right on track!
So -- Day 1 -- complete -- that wasn't too bad!!

I am so proud of myself. Since I had a whole day that I really had nothing to do. I decided today was going to be my 10 miles 1 mile walking/aerobic video at a time marathon day. I didn't think I was going to be able to do it but I DID IT. Wow I feel great.

Hi y'all. Sorry I fell off the map! I was really busy last fall and I sort of fell out of the habit of posting, although I am still working my plan. I have really been on plateau since November. Nothing lost, nothing really gained.. could be worse I suppose! :)

So I guess I am coming here at Day 1 if you will have me back!

Thank you :) Really nice to see you back. Missed you. I wish when I looked in the mirror I could see how the weight is coming off. I really don't look much different than I did when I started. Only time I really see a difference is when I lay in bed and lift my legs up into the air. Then I can see a difference in my thighs

Ah...well....still didn't get off the launch pad. The madness continues at work. Still, excuses, excuses, rationalization etc. I DID drink my vegetable juice and prepare for a huge salad at lunch...just never got to it. Anyhow, can't call it a start to my challenge, so I'm trying again today. :^:


Apple -- Looks like you're back on track. Not far to go with two of them. You'll have the brew one knocked flat in no time too! :yes:

shelby -- As you can see, starting is often the hardest part, before the momentum picks up and before people are used to their challenges. In the beginning it's even easy to just plain forget to do them. You'll get the hang of it. Good luck.

I think I get some kind of mental issue when I join a challenge, I've been doing great for a week and then jumped in here and fell off the wagon on my head!! :dizzy: Thanks for letting me in, but I think I'm going to back out and do what was working for me!! Good luck to all of you!! :hug:

WHERE THE HECK HAVE I BEEN! Omg I haven't posted since the 1st!

So here I am as of today!

I guess yesterday was day 21 of my daily exercise! woohoo! lol I finished that with one pause left. I think I will wait and re-start that one next week as I am going away this weekend and not sure if I will get in exercise.

Ok, starting out on Day 3 here. Making time for a post. Hope my strength is returning. After being knocked flat for a week last week, this week and getting back to work has been hard. And, the problems there seemed to have been on the increase from the start of the week. Being a manager is really thankless and there seems to be no end to the problems. In fact, that is all managing seems to be about when you're in a failing company. Newspapers may be doomed thanks to the Internet. Sigh.


Apple -- Thanks. You said I could do it and I DID! :cb: :dancer: :cb: And look at you! You are almost finished on two challenges. Yes, yes, yes, you can do it!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

dj -- Thanks. I did get going, just didn't post much except to say that I'd done it. Unfortunately, we lost shelby (shelby, come back! :( ) and I very much understand her feelings. I can be the same, but as the starter and organizer (term?) of this thread I am obligated to hang around, even though at times my presence can be scarce. It's often in those times that any thought of a challenge will set me off eating junk, so I lie low till I have the strength to try again, like now! :sunny:

Shy -- You're doing well as usual! :) Actually, posters here ARE asked to censor food out. It's in the guidelines in the beginning. Oldtimers like Apple were here when we had people who would go on about the glory of their binges and I asked them (not Apple or dj, others) to stop in consideration of those who come here to get away from those obstacles and for whom even the mention can set off a binge. Yeah, yeah, they have to deal with life, but until they can, we try to help them. So, I'm very happy to see when people follow the guidelines. Of course, some people are using the censor smilies when it isn't necessary and even when they'd be the last ones to go on and on about the wonders of certain foods, foods that people binge on. But, that's OK, it keeps others thinking about the possible effects of their words on others much different from them. I really appreciate that show of consideration. Remember, Shy, not everyone has your apparent discipline. That's why they're here. Some people are trying to lose in the area of 300 lbs, so I ask for consideration for all needs and possible needs, and some of those needs are not the needs of others of us. You say we can have anything, we just have to "watch." But, but, but, let me tell you, how I can "watch" the quantities snowball so huge you wouldn't believe it. Oh, it makes for interesting scenes all right, but nothing I'm happy about the next day and certainly nothing that is helping the weight loss! :lol3:

Thought I would pop in and let everyone know what is going on. As you know we are tearing out the carpet in our one hallway and putting wood floors down. WELL since I am a accident looking for a place to happen. I found a place today lol. I tripped over a piece of lint ( lol ) on the floor we had just pulled the carpet off of and fell down the stairs. Let me re say that. I fell down the three stairs to the landing and then down the flight of stairs lol. I wasn't laughing at the time and sure hope God forgives me for the things I WAS saying on the way down. I will be ok but I did something to my hip, which I have no idea what they are talking about. Closest I can understand is that I sprained it. Well it means ( my mother has said this for years ) I finally found that place to darn near kill myself because I am such a klutz lol. The doc said I can walk all I want ( as long as it doesn't hurt to much ). No jumping or sprinting. Not really in the mood to jump or sprint lol. Think I might take his advice on that one lol. Did a couple one mile videos today ( did it hurt you might ask ) don't be foolish of course it hurt lolol. Do you think I am made of plastic hehehe. But, I was able to do them. Think the knee lifts and kicks are going to have to wait for a bit. So for now, it seems 1 mile videos and upper body workouts are going to be the exercise I can do. My daughter brought me ( something I am not allowed to say ) because of course they help with pain. I ate 10 of them before I knew it. Going to be paying for that. First time in almost 10 months I haven't been on plan. Won't kill me but sure isn't smart. Glad there are no more of the darn things in the house lol. Checked fit day. Since I have been on the lower end of what I allow myself for a few weeks, I am still within my ranges. Think this still means lots of chicken and salads for a week lol. Will just have to see how long it takes to get back into action. Doc said it could be a few days it could be a few weeks.

Sure glad I made my exercise challenge according to what my knee and or hip would do lol.

Maybe you should think about getting a job that you do as you are told instead of doing the telling. Heck from my experience, I never made that much more to have to run the show than I did when I just did what I was told.

Really nice going. You are doing so well. Nice going giving up that beer.

You are moving right along. You should be proud of yourself.

Another quick catch up here. I did take another pause on the exercise. Had one of "those" days the other day which left me no time to get my workout in.

Shy - Glad to hear you're ok! Yes, stay away from that jumping and sprinting for a while. And going off plan one time after your accident is excusable! :shrug:

Thank you, I don't feel as bad today as I thought I would.

I am not hurting as much as I thought I would today. My poor body must be use to being beaten up lol. I felt so much better after I put everything into fit day and found out I was still within my ranges. To me, that is staying on plan. A few ( you know whats ) are ok, 10 of them are not ok lol.

Hello all! I was a delinquent member of the last post... started and made it half way through a few posts - but I'm back if you'll have me!!!

Red, DJ, typical, Shy, Apple - so happy to see you all on this thread! I went back to the old thread and was scared you all disappeared... but here you are and you are all doing so great - what an inspiration!!!

So excited to meet everyone else! :)

Red - you're a savior for keeping these threads going - and SO glad to hear your skin is getting better! You go girl!!!

My challenges are below - still have some momentum from last thread. Some of the dates are off because I had to start some over (eating past 8, on plan) but no alcohol and no diet pop are going strong!

No diet pop (I haven't had one in 39 days!)

Stay on food plan - Day 8 - 0 pauses
No eating past 8 - Day 6 - 1 pause left
work out 3 days / week - day 8 - 0 pauses
no alcohol - day 13 - 0 pauses

Looking forward to a STRONG February! :)

How lame is that, taking a pause on day 20. I just felt that I needed to rest. I did some walking, but only 15 min or so.
Even though I haven't been drinking beer, I'm still drinking too much other stuff. Next challenge, NO alcohol. Which sounds pretty darned impossible. Well, I've been pregnant enough to know that it's possible, I guess.:D
I'm starting South Beach next week too. Feb is going to be a long hard month but I'll be happy at the end. :crossed:

Day 4 is done. I don't think I'm out of the woods with the skin but it sure does feel better. Still taking antihistamines to stop the itching though and when I don't, it keeps me awake. There is still a lot of scarring on my arms, so when I exercise and heat up, my arms are still red. The skin sloughs off regularly though and i don't need to lather on moisturizer. AND, I had energy today. Even got to the gym. God, it feels wonderful to have energy again.

Apple, thanks! Don't know if it's confidence though. I've been pretty darn good about making vegetable juice. Today I even found a place that sold flax seed oil and I added that to my (banana, grapefruit, lemon, soy milk, spinach, komatsuna (like spinach but more bitter) smoothie. I'm finding that when I do eat sweets or drink alcohol, everything tastes so artificial. A bowl of mixed fruit, on the other hand, tastes wonderful.
Well, if this energy sticks around, I am going to try my darndest to get the weight off again. I gained it ALL back, then some. :^: Anyhow, no problem taking a late pause. :coach: Just make sure you do the last two days of your challenge, Apple!

Well, I actually completed 2 challenges! Hooray for me!:encore:
So my new challenges are going to be HARDER.
When I do daily crunches, I usually do 3 sets of 15 or 20. So I'm upping it to 100 crunches, 2 pauses allowed
Upping daily exercise to 45 minutes. 2 pauses allowed.
NO alcohol. 2 pauses allowed.
I'm starting the no alcohol even though the no beer is not yet finished.:p
South Beach starts tomorrow too. I don't know how that would work as a challenge. May as well throw it in too, with NO pauses allowed.:kickbutt:

Be proud. Smile. Do a little dance. WOW 100 crunches. Gosh you are tough.

Take it easy on the exercise until your body really is ready. Just do a little, keep it easy. Just getting the body moving is good, getting it to tired after being sick isn't a good idea.

One day they will come easy every single day until then I will just keep pushing myself to do them without even thinking about it.

Hi all. Still working on Day 5 here, but it's looking like it'll be fine. Ate too much though....but that's another challenge. Skin looks worse today. Problem with this healing process (if it is that) is that it gets worse before it get better and it's easy to lose heart, but I'm going to keep at it. :^:

Well, I kind of took yesterday off. Went for a walk, but didn't really expend enough energy to count as exercise. My brother visited, so we had beer.:hat:

Ok, Day 5 is done. Starting on 6 here. Thanks, Apple, for the encouragement. I'm trying hard. Just wondering how and why I got as bad as I did. Guess doing everything I did on the poor fuel I was putting in my body just had bad effects over the longterm. My skin and complexion DOES look better. Someone at the gym even remarked on it. Please, please, please let this continue, is my prayer. As for weight, my profile is NOT accurate, but I'm not willing to get on the scale at this point. Off to the gym now. :dancer:

Nice going to make a stand and get on the trail. I pretty much have the same challenges every time

1. Four basic food groups
2. stay within calories, carbs and fat I allow myself
3. exercise
can depend on the knee and hip but generally
Mon - Fri 1 - 2 mile walking/aerobic video in the morning and 2 -3 mile walking/aerobic video in the evening.
At least 1 resistance training video a day ( sometimes do these on Saturday and Sunday if I haven't gotten them in during the week
Mon-wed-Fri 40 min resistance training.
( I do mix it up so I sometimes change what I do on certain days but I do get in around 400 min exercise a week )
5. only have a snack if I have enough carbs left over

You will get it all together just takes time.

I sure hope things get better. I have such dry skin the eczema just is a pain in the rump. Lucky I don't have it very much on my face, is just here and there and the itching can drive a person crazy.

How do these days get away from me? Never enough time. The beginningn of the week is tough for me to post as I have class at night. But - I'm here! Apple - I'm on day 12 of South Beach Phase 1 (Ok, I cheated a little bit) - I haven't stepped on the scale yet, but I feel like I may have lost a few lbs. GOOD LUCK!!

So, I decided my challenges are too complicated... I am going to simplify -

Food Plan (stay on plan) (3 pauses)
Exercise (3 days / week) (2 pauses)
No eating after 8 (3 pauses)

I am on day 10 for one, day 9 for another - but totally screwed up no eating after 8. SO - since I'm all over the board I am just going to start 'em all over! Starting tomorrow (since I ate at 9:30 tonight!)

I'm trying to decide if SouthBeach is for me or if I should go back to the tried and true Weight Watchers or Calorie Counting. That's why I kept my "food plan" generic. I like the tenants of south beach so I htink I'll work that thinking into whatever plan I move forward with. I met with a dietician this weekend who told me my daily calories to lose weight should be 1800-2000 - that just seems HIGH. she said it was due to my height (5'9") and my activity level. It just feels so high to me. I've never actually counted calories, only done weight watchers, so not sure what to think.

Any of you chicks have better luck with one over the other (WW vs. calories)?

Is it Friday yet?? :) :)

My husband and I were just talking about how many people here drink and seem to have a hard time giving up the booze. Seems to me it is as hard for them to give up booze as it is for others to give up snacks.

Glad to see you are sticking with it. With the busy life you have I think you are doing great.

I kind of calorie count. I don't think one plan is better than another. It is what ever works for each person. What calorie level you are at can depend a great deal on your activity level. I am a stay at home mom, I exercise about 1 to 2 hours a day. I am at 1200 to 1400 calories. There is a nifty little formula someone posted here on the site if you would like to have it. For me the formula showed the lower end of what I am taking in. Thought it was pretty cool that it was so close to what I allow myself.

I had the first glass of wine I've had since mid-January! Went to kickboxing tonight and decided for Valentine's Day I'd have a glass of wine and a piece of dark chocolate.... since I don't have a valentine, I thought I'd treat myself!

Challenges haven't quite started - tomorrow!! I also want to exercise every day of the week - I am struggling with making it a habit so I think i'm going to focus the most on that one. I go 5 days a week one week and 1 the next... I am definitely giving myself 3 pauses on that baby! I bought a jump rope on amazon tonight - brigning that with me on business travel so I don't have an excuse not to exercise - 10 min of that is great cardio! And I'll bring Pilates DVDs with me too!

SO, friday, Feb 15 starts my challenges:

Food Plan (stay on plan) (3 pauses)
Exercise every day (3 pauses)
No eating 2 hours before bed (3 pauses)

Decided to go back to the program I know works for me - weight watchers. Now that I'm not sick w/mono anymore (doc "officially" cleared me this week!) I know I'll be out more social - which makes south beach just too hard. WW is more flexible.

Red - you're trucking along - yay you!

Shy/Apple - my vice was diet pop (and beer...) I gave up diet pop for new year's. so far, I've had one... so I cheated, but one in 1 1/2 months isn't bad! I'm just trying to get the artifical sweeteners out of my diet - or at least cut back. I chew a lot of gum, so there's that... but there can't be as many sweeteners in a stick of gum as are in a diet coke! I even bought the plain yogurt and am slowly weaning from 1 pack of splenda/stevia to 1/2 and eventually none! I am even getting used to coffee with only a splash of cream!

I realized that if South Beach has no pauses, then I certainly can't have alcohol, since its not allowed on Phase 1. After that I'm allowed a bit of wine. So I just might ace the alcohol challenge!
I think I depleted my supply of carbs, because I was really hungry this morning. The week end is going to be tough. I'd really like to get out of town and I don't know if I can feed my kids on the road with out losing control. :crossed:
Well, if I can get through the week-end I'll have finished a week! That would really make me feel confident. So I'm going to try REALLY hard.

Rdye, great work with the sweetener redux! That's one really hard part of South Beach, No sugar. And I try to avoid artificial sweeteners. So no yummies for me for a while.
I started to post on a South Beach thread, and everyone is constantly posting what they eat. I'm glad we have the "food porn" rule. I really don't need to hear about it.

2 Pauses on day 2 - got a great workout in Saturday am, but had a ladies night out.... first time I've been out (other than new year's eve) since Halloween! Yay that mono is gone, but a few too many cocktails w/the ladies got me way off food plan. Oh well - I can honestly say it was worth it - just lifted my spirits to be out and about and not home sick anymore! Next time I'll work on that alcohol thing... no beer, though, which is good!

I'm a little worried about 45 min of exercise. I forgot how hard it is to do when DH is away. Well, I'll have to make an extra effort in the evenings to get the step out while I watch TV. Usually after I put the kids to bed I am cold, so moving around warms me up, I just have to stretch it out for 45 min!
The Beach was awesome yesterday. I really wanted to go back today, but my kids weren't too excited about the thought of another long drive.

Rdye, I think you deserved a night out!:hat: Personally, I am hoping no one invites me out. At least not for another week.

Okay, so I think #1 is totally imporant since I keep forgetting to post. I come here everyday and post in other threads... can't figure out why I keep forgetting about this one!

#2 means I can have ONE MEAL and one meal only a week that I don't have to enter into my journal, if it turns into more then one meal a week or even in a day (like not counting a meal and a snack) - then a paused must be used!

Well, took a pause on the calorie count on Sunday. We went x-country skiing on Sunday, and it's too hard to recreate what I snacked on! I should be ok on the pauses though since I'm close to finishing and won't be going skiing again until next week.

Apple - Don't forget, taking off ALL the weight you want to lose, might take a little while, BUT, you'll be losing sizes as you go! That will make you feel great in the process. You'll get there.

Apple -- I know it's hard, but don't look for "results" so soon. Just stay on the diet. There can be all sorts of reasons you don't see a change in weight, but that doesn't mean things aren't changing. Just keep an eye on exactly how much you're eating and if after a while that doesn't work, change that. It's usually the quantity and on a diet like South Beach, where amounts aren't specified, it's easy to eat too much, NOT that that's what's happening now, but later you may see that it was the reason. Just wait for a while!!

dj -- Your words to Apple were encouragement to me as well. I am SO angry with myself for having gained back the weight, well, not really angry, but it's a letdown. My skin is better but I've been sleeping a LOT and not exercising, so sometimes I worry that that's the only reason things are better and not because of the vitamins and minerals I'm dumping in. I want to get it ALL together for once, be healthy and lean. I never seem able to get it all together and it's starting to weigh on me (no pun intended but one certainly applicable!). Hang in there on your calorie challenge. Just a handful of days to go and you do have a pause left. Probably you didn't have so much extra anyhow on your skiing day. Cross-country skiing is an extreme calorie burner!

rdye -- Sure, change your challenge. It's not good to set yourself up for failure so to say, but you know 6 times a week doesn't fit the challenge parameters unless you're saying NO pauses. It's just a way of looking at it. You can say exercise every day and then just take one pause a week or I think you can simply alter your definition of exercise as far as intensity and duration go. In that way, you can still say you exercised every day. Be flexible and be kind to yourself. This is not Sparta.

sotypical -- I can't help but feel very neglected. ;)There's no requirement to post here. If you want to join us, join us, if not, don't. It's your choice. There's no reason to be calling yourself "bad" or a "brat." This isn't a school or the military. We're happy to have you when you can make it. :yes:

All right... in the spirit of this thread and the initial post Red posted... I am going to start over vs. taking 2 pauses on day 4. I had an unexpected day that threw off my eating schedule (off plan) and also timing (couldn't eat dinner until 10pm!) SO... here goes!

Limit artifical sweeteners (not tracking an official challenge as it's virtually impossible to get rid of all of them, but I just read another article on how horrible they are, so I'm going to try to severely limit them for a while.)

RED - I hear ya on my exercise not meeting the challenge. Here's how I'll handle... On the first day of a week that I do not exercise, I am still on challenge. On the 2nd, it's a pause. That way, I'm getting 6 days of exercise (5 at the very least!) per week. I think that's what typical is doing too.

Off the horse today, BACK ON tomorrow!!

Ok, I blew the exercise challenge. I don't know what happened with me, but I did not feel good yesterday and ended up taking a nap during my normal exercise time. I guess today will be day 1 of my new exercise challenge!

Red - I'm glad that what I said helped. It took me a while to learn that myself. I use to think that I had to hit my goal to feel good about myself. Then I found out how good I felt as I hit those little goals, such as my pants fitting better or dropping a size and decided that the big goal could wait. Hang in there!

Well, TOM came today, and it caught me be surprise! I usually get serious munchies for a couple of days right before, but I didn't this time. That means the diet must be working, because phase 1 is designed to reduce cravings. And that is why I haven't dropped any weight. I have to stick it out for a few more days before I can expect my pants to be looser or the scale to go down. Grrrr.
I'm pretty sure I am not eating too much. I'm probably not eating enough. But the last couple of days I haven't felt very hungry.

Bummer about the exercise, DJ. Now that you are so busy, it must be really hard to fit in. I exercised at 11:00 last night! Then I couldn't go to bed, since I was all invigorated. :dizzy: You are almost done with your other challenges!!

Rdye, OK on the restarts! Sometimes it's hard to get on a roll. Thats why the first week is so critical.

Sorry I haven't been around. The lady accross the way fell and I have been back and forth helping to take care of her. Seems like some of us are having an easy time and others hard finding things going a bit rough. Sorry for those of you that things aren't going the way you want them to. Just remember, things will get better. Sometimes we just get in a bit of a slump. I am keeping up with things but taking it easy on the exercise since the knee is acting up again. Feels really good today so I did 6 miles. I feel much better since the last few days have been so busy taking care of the neighbor and my own family so exercise has been done but not with the intensity that I usually do it. I have been sticking to my challenges but even I haven't been putting the usual effort into it. Maybe it is the cold weather and snow again, who knows. Ok ladies, it is time for us to kick it up a notch and get back to where we should be.

I am still disappointed in this diet It worked so well last time I'm going to finish the challenge, but then I'm going to switch to something else Probably just the good old eat less/exercise more I really miss being able to eat fruit, although South Beach will permit it in phase 2

I sure hope I have the patience for this. I know this is for the long haul. I'm just so frustrated!!! :tantrum: My 45 min of exercise is not always high energy, sweating buckets type of exercise, so I guess I will try to tinker with that DH will be home soon!!! Then I'll start running more.

Ok, finished the water challenge but didn't finish the calorie one. I managed to catch the cold my kids brought home and just didn't log those calories for 2 days. Oh well, I'll start fresh once again, but not till monday. I'm going skiing again tomorrow so I'll take a day off before getting serious once again.

Oy, fell off the wagon yet again. I am so frustrated with myself right now... I am near a 4-year high with my weight, and I've NEVER had this much trouble getting back on a program. Seems I have a million excuses and rationalize with myself... one more yogurt won't hurt... oh, going over points for the day isn't that big of a deal... my clothes aren't fitting, I'm getting more & more frustrated with my weight and I can't seem to with the battle with the anti-diet demon in my head. HELP!

Monday I'll start over - I blew today in a big way... trying to salvage what I can. UGH.

I am sorry to hear you are haveing a hard time. It gets to a point with each of us that we finaly have to stop the reasons why we don't stay on plan and find reasons we will stay on plan. I am sure you will get back on track and find those reasons. It isn't always easy. Don't give up.

We all know you can do it. Just pick yourself up and get back on the wagon.

Exercise dosn't always have to be the sweet buckets kind. Well I sure hope not, I don't sweet that much lol.

Red - it is okay! keep going!

Rdye - try not to beat your self up, just do the best you can. I know for myself, sometimes I think I want to lose to weight but I can't stay on track - it is times like that when I know I am just not ready, there is no point beating yourself, just do the best you can. I spent the last year and a bit half assing it, losing and gaining the same 10 pounds over and over, I figured it was better then gaining 10 pounds over and over! haha - so don't worry about it, do your best and if you slip up dont beat yourself up. I figure working hard 5 days a week and slipping two days a week is better then slipping up for all 7.

Rdye, don't despair! I've been feeling the way you are A LOT in the past 6 months or so. But something has finally clicked and I've been able to stick with a diet for 2 weeks now. Even though I'm not getting dramatic results. I have to keep reminding myself to be patient. It's hard. It's really really hard. But something will click and you'll be on your way! Hooray, I finished phase 1. I'm kind of unclear as to what phase 2 really is, since I don't have the book. I know I'm still not supposed to eat a lot of carbs, and introduce them slowly, so for the next week I'll add a carb here and there and still avoid sugar & flour. I did lose a little weight, 6 pounds or so. Today was the first day I felt my pants loosen up. Hopefully this will help to keep me going!!

Red, glad you are sticking to it! Sicily! I am jealous. I've always wanted to go to Italy. Have a great time and tell us all about it!

Ughh, I went out for dinner and blew the diet. Had a drink too. It was teeney-weeney, but a drink none the less. I was in NYC the past 3 days and didn't get a chance to check in. It was a disaster to my diet, but I"m not going to dwell on it. I am just going to get back on the horse and start over. I got in one GREAT work out while I was there and I am leaving for the gym right now, so I am making up for it. I'm going to go this week w/o the 35 flex points (or minimal - if I go over by 1 or 2 one day, that's OK, but not all 35!!) SO...back on the horse! I made some good decisions, but a lot of bad decisions on the trip. It was a work trip and we went on a tour of high-end bakeries, pastry shops, candy stores, etc. And... well... I ate a lot of it. :devil: UGH. Oh well, I REFUSE to let it frustrate me and I AM back on the horse!

We went skiing over the week-end and it was hard to be good. So I will need to get back on the horse, as Rdye said. I'm going to think about some new ones and start soon! Fortunately, I didn't gain anything back. (Yet)

Hi all! :wave: I am BACK and fatter than ever! :mad: Sicily was tough because we were dragged everywhere, but I'm glad I went. Now back to the dread of work here, but I am determined to prevail! After landing yesterday and getting home, I went to the gym for the first real exercise since before I left. It felt good! Wow, my weight is way up. I haven't been this heavy in a looooong time. It is disgusting but I am just going to put myself through boot camp :drill: and bust it off!

Hi there, Shy. Hi rdye. Thanks Shy for the encouragement. I know I can knock the weight off fast. It's just a shame I had to put it on but it was a double punch, really. Forced inactivity and NO time to even get in a bit of exercise (though I did try) and forced feeding...mangiare! mangiare! It was pretty gross and with the jet lag and not knowing when and where we would be able to eat I may have even overeaten. Sigh.
rdye, I'm not really doing anything special, just lots more of what I normally do and less eating. Yesterday, I hit the gym for chest/back and ab work plus the two hours' walking. Today, I rode my horse, then hit the gym for leg and ab work and the day included about 2 1/2 hours of walking so that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. I also did a bit of stretching. Eating was a LOT less than it's been.
Basically, I'm going to just move more, eat less and NOT drink beer or eat calorie dense food, no deep-fried stuff, minimal sugar, no processed junk, that kind of thing.
I'll start a challenge with something more specific as well too.

Sigh. Heh people. Just having a self-disgust morning. The fact that my weight is SO high again is just making me hate myself no end. When I think of all the work I did to get it down -- and it WAS down -- and then that I allowed it to rocket up again disgusts me incredibly. How could I have done this? OK, OK, get a hold on yourself. It's 12 lbs. from my absolute lowest in recent times in December, when I came back from Hong Kong sick. Between then and now I have worked to improve my health and my skin is SO much better. I was overeating and sleeping a LOT and knew it, but gave my health and skin improvement priority....SO...this is the price...OK, big deal, deal with it. Maybe it's what I needed in order to get serious and stop fudging around.

RED - do I ever hear you! I was just having the same conversation w/a friend. I lost a lot of weight last summer and slowly put it all back on - and then some. I'm also at a weight near a four year high - and I'm SO FRUSTRATED. But - you need to remember that good things are happening - your skin is better (YAY!) and it sounds like mentally you're in the game. Weight will come next, just give it time. I have to keep reminding myself that too - I had mono and was sick for 2 1/2 months - which led to a lot of the weight I have on me right now. YOU WILL LOSE IT - have faith!!

I was an A for pigging out and there was a lot I could have done to not gain so much, but heck, it's done, it's done. Get over it! That's what I'm telling myself and cracking down.

Oh, yesterday was day 21 and I didn't even realize it.

I have been staying in my ranges but have been eating a bit to much that I shouldn't be eating. I think it is time to buckle down a bit and stop that. It hasn't effected my weight loss yet but, as we all know, it sure can.

I am glad the skin is doing better. I know you have been making that a priority. I wonder if anything I eat effects the eczema? It is just time to take a deep breath and get back on track. It is so hard to see you be so hard on yourself. Take it easy and maybe keep things around you that are ok to eat and not have things around you that aren't ok to eat.

I'd like to start a few new one's, but the next two weeks are going to be very hazardous eating-wise. 2 birthdays and easter. Hmmm. It's kind of whimpy to wait 2 weeks to start.... I suppose if I allow myself 3 pause days I can do it. I'm just not sure what IT is yet.
Well, I am repeating the 45 min exercise challenge. So we'll start there and I'll add a food control, beer/alcohol control challenge soon.
Dog in photo is very old and I suspect she is in her last weeks.....

Thank you. How many times have we said to our selfs, I will start tomorrow or after this or that happens. Today is our future. It really is true nothing tastes as good as thin feels. There is no holiday, no special action that is worth putting off doing what is good for us. 42 weeks ago I said today is the day and have never really looked back. I look back today. All I have accomplished. I am glad I didn't put it off. Just think where I will be 42 weeks from now. I know each and every one of us can get on plan and be where we want to be one day in the near future. It all happens one day at a time.

Thank you so much for this challenge. It really has done more for me than you can know. It helps me to keep on track. It helps me to see what I have accomplished when the mirror doesn't. It makes me proud of myself.

Hi all!

Sorry for the silence - this week got really crazy and I didn't make it in here to post. I did OK for the most part, but just tried to reconcile the week with my challenge and I lost track... I'm pretty sure I'd be on about day 12 with no pauses left, so in the interest of being HONEST with the challenge, I'll just start over instead of guessing. And, since I'm traveling this week and will likely have a hard time tracking 3 challenges, I'm going to just do one for now... the most important one - STAY ON PLAN with eating! I'm counting points again so my goal is to stick to my daily points every day and only use the flex points ONE day - and not use them all.

Today is day 1, and I did it!

I also got in a 7 mile run (on the treadmill - can't wait for nice weather to get OUT) - I have a half marathon in May and I need to get moving!! It felt good to see such a high number of calories burned on the treadmill (even though I know it's overstated...) Anyway, I'm not losing weight quickly but I have stopped gaining - which is half the battle. I lost about 1.5 lbs in the past month or so, which is good considering I was gaining a good 1-2 lbs a month since September. Now, it's time to really get serious about eating (now that it's under control, it's time to get it to a stage where weight loss is possible) and accelerate the loss!

So sorry to hear about your dog. Hope she is not in pain. It is always hard to let them go. Enjoy her last days and remember the good times you had together.

Had a good day Sunday with lots of exercise and good eating and fresh veggie juice. Sure wish I could do this on workdays. It's just so hard and being in the poisonous office environment is truly debilitating. I have to find ways of working toward a way out that works FOR me, then maybe I can take it. rdye, thanks for the support. Yes, I suffer VERY badly from jet lag, become depressed and eat junk food because I feel so bad. Couple that with the fact that hay fever season is peaking soon and this year is worse than ever. Day 2 - done. Whew. You can do this, Red!! Just take it one step at a time. i often find that after I fall off the wagon I try to change everything at once to "make up" for my "bad days" - then I get overwhelmed and fall off again. Pick one thing and start slowly.... you can do it!

This is Day 6. I have been forgetting to post, but I have been able to meet my goal of one snack only between meals. Usually I only have a snack between lunch and dinner and another mid-evening. I think I have only had one am snack. This is a lot less than I was snacking. Once or twice a snack has been too high in calories but usually I keep it pretty light. I never thought I would ever be able to get through the evening with only one snack! I still want more but now it is possible for me to say no. So far I have not taken a pause day although I planned to take 3.

You are all doing so well! Rdye you are an inspiration! Keep up the good work everyone!! And thanks for the encouragement!

Shy, sorry you're not sleeping well. I was hearing on the TV how not getting enough sleep affects us in so many ways (weight too)...I think that's part of my problem. I sleep but wake up frequently due to hot flashes. Thought I'd be done with them by now..

I am hot I am cold I am hot I am cold. I just don't sleep. First they said it was because of my lungs. I had real problems would stop breathing at night. I got a machine with a real sexy mask to wear lol. I don't have to have that now. Losing some weight did help that. Now, I sleep like the dead or I am awake every few hours. My energy the last couple of days is non existent. I have gotten everything done that I wanted to do and have gotten my exercise done but darn it has been so hard the last couple of days. I even slept pretty good last night and that didn't seem to help. Hopefully will get some sleep the next few days and that will help.

I keep forgetting to post at the end of the day

Sometimes, when life is hectic. One challenges is more than enough. You seem very busy at the moment so just watching what you eat sounds like challenge enough.

This time of year, just like fall, can be very difficult. Today my sinuses are killing me. Nothing tastes good and what I can smell makes my tummy turn over. I am going to be eating all night long to get my foods in because I sure haven't felt like eating much so far today lol.

You mean the hot flashes do go away sometimes. Heck I have been having them off and on since I hit early menopause at age 29 lol.

Glad to see you are doing well. With your busy schedule you can't know if you are coming or going some days.

Hi everyone. I think I am ready to start a challenge or 2. Shortly after my last post I did lose my dog. She was rapidly declining and we were beginning to wonder if we should help her along. One night right before we went to bed she threw up some nasty stuff and I had a feeling it was time. The next morning I found her in a puddle of pee, unable to stand. Poor thing. So we had the kids say good bye, sent them off to school and took her to the vet.:( She was a really great dog. She was so wonderful with the kids and so protective. We went to the pound and found a young dog (don't want to deal with puppy stuff right now) We didn't want the kids to feel sad, or have our other old dog feel lonely. So this new pooch is keeping us all busy. He has chewing issues, but the damage so far has been minimal. No shoes. Yet.
Anyway, I'm falling back into my old habits. Good thing about the new dog is that he needs walks, so I've been walking or even occasionally jogging almost every day.
So to start, my challenges are:
2 pieces of fruit a day, 2 pauses
30 min of exercise a day, 2 pauses

Well, things have been rough and getting rougher and work is becoming a true ****, perhaps a legal one. Boy, it's not pretty. But, I'm trying to prevail and sticking to challenges is important. The alcohol one is barely hanging on but I have new resolve concerning that. Even went to a bar last night to discuss very emotional and serious matters and only had tomato juice. The person I was with drank but I didn't and you know, it wasn't bad at all. Course, I was helped by the fact that I'd been out VERY late the night before but it was a first. I can even envision myself going to some important parties in the near future and NOT drinking. Could be a new leaf turning over. :yes:

A pair of pants that I never really liked anyway broke today. The zipper has always been problematic, and now it's history. So I'm back to my no pants dilema. I should just wear skirts for a while.
I'm setting a goal for April, 8 pounds.
My scale is broken though. I guess I can use the one at the gym. Haven't been there in ages.

Oh today is day 21 :)

You will get it to all come together. Get to the gym, you get to exercise that way and use the gyms scale lol. Pants, I can remember having only one pair of pants now I have two lol. Maybe hit a good will and find something very cheap until you get to a weight you want to buy clothes. Sorry to hear about your dog. That is such a hard thing. Our wonderful pepper is 14 years old this year. Labs tend to only live about 12 years so she is very old. We wonder each day when her time will be coming. Nice about getting another dog. We have gone off and on the idea of getting another so the cat won't be lonely.

I can understand about the booze I guess. I use to like to drink the sweet drinks. Now I just don't bother. I can't imagine taking any of my fat or carbs for booze. I went out all the time with friends and never drank since I was the one that drove. You will find it is easier than you think.

You keep in mind. You don't fail when you start over. You fail when you quit. You will get where you want to be. Just keep trying.

You know, I haven't seen jolly around in ages.

Speaking of gyms, I'm thinking of going to try a different gym. I don't actually have a membership at the one I've been going to, I just bought a punch card. And I probably won't use it up any time soon since I don't have many opportunities to go, especially in April. But I don't find the place very inspiring. So I might look around. For April, I think I'll concentrate on running.

Well, it's Friday and I've notched another day on all fronts. It wasn't easy either, but I forced myself to buy carrots and make juice when I got home after 11 p.m. I was so tired but did it anyhow becauuse I only have one pause left on that one and there are other days where it's just hard. This time I could at least buy carrots but sometimes I can't buy anything late at night or even during the day if I'm at the office the whole time, so I thought it'd be wiser to save the pause for when and if I really need it. I have a lot of parties and get-togethers coming up and I don't know about the no alcohol challenge. I could stay away from the first one but the second one is a farewell party and I really should go, yet my challenge won't be over yet. I don't know if I can take part and still enjoy things, let alone stay away from the booze. And then I think, what for? But, maybe I'll try it. I mean, what's the point of things if you have to abstain from socializing and parties? And I don't mean, I should drink. I mean, I have to learn to be able to socialize aand go to parties without drinking. Still, I wish I hadn't used up the pauses so early, but, oh well....we'll see. It could be an interesting exercise in "alternative moments." :^:

I just weighed myself for the first time since a steady gain of fat. I was too disgusted and afraid to see the number. OK, I saw it, it's not pretty, but I am going to do this. Not drinking those past few times even though I went out and talked to people IN BARS! I think it had a big effect on my feeling of options and self-empowerment without thinking I had to be a hermit. It's the ultimate freedom, to have something in front of you and be able to say, no thank you, really, no thank you. :yes: Oh, and another thing, I had actually started smoking too and that I haven't done in 18 years. But, I cut that out again too. Damn, theses past few weeks have been hellish and I think I got through them pretty well. I met a lot of new people because of the decadent nights I spent and the booze I consumed and they will stand me well, but for now....a pause on that. ;)


Apple -- Good going on the challenges and thanks for the congrats. Like you say, exercise will happen. I'm having a real non-exercise period here but it'll happen again. Not drinking is huge and cutting out sugar is huge too. I know if I hit the gym hard without keeping those other two in chains they would raise their ugly heads and roar mighty loud! :eek: Yeah, I second Shy when she says you need to find a gym in which you feel comfortable or "inspired" as you say. I wouldn't wait for too much inspiration from the outside though but you definitely need to feel comfortable. Good luck and get that pup out for some runs!

Shy -- Congrats there too on another day down. Just what are you challenges? Yeah, cutting out booze sure helps calories. Thing is, I never was one for much eating unless I was feeling pretty tipsy and then it's just mindless eating. So, it's not like I am looking forward to eating more. Carbs I don't count at all. I'm not into the whole carb thing. Bring 'em on! I just try to steer clear of refined foods. So, cutting out alcohol calories means I should see some weight loss and that is really, really what I need so much and DO want. I have gained so much again and I know it's because of all the pints I've downed. :( Oh well, a lot of them were pretty fun.

You are doing great even thou it can be tough.


1. Stay on plan for exercise 3 miles each week day
At least 3 miles Walking/aerobic videos a day Monday through Friday and about 40 min resistance training on Mon, Wed and Friday. I try to do 8 miles on Mon, Wed and Fri ( 3 miles is the basic challenge ) and 10 miles on Tues and Thur ( 3 miles is the basic challenge ) but I can't always do the extra miles because of the knee. If it is a bad knee day I have built into the challenge I have to do the miles I haven't done ( basic challenge miles ) on the weekend. I haven't had to do this for months but I keep it there for a saftey net. I think last month I averaged 8 miles each day but with my knee I can't set the challenge that high. There have been some days in the past that 3 is about all I can do.

2. Calories, carbs and fat
Stay within the general amounts I allow myself each week
1200 to 1400 calories, 30 to 35 grams fat , 180 to 210 carbs.

3. Four basic food groups
Eating the required amounts of the four basic food groups each day. Nutritionist/dietitian told me as follows
Bread/Cereal at least 3 a day, every other day 6
Dairy 2
Meat 2
Veggies 3
Fruit 2

4. Snacks
I can have a snack everyday if I like BUT I can not have a snack if I don't have the calories, fat and carbs left to cover it AFTER I have eaten the required amounts of the four basic food groups. Snacks are things that do not fit into a food group because they have no nutritional value, example mountain dew or m & m's.

5. Do something just for myself each day
I have started doing hook rugs again. I love the things. Sometimes this can mean getting a hot bath and reading a book.

The are the same challenges I do every time. I just up the exercise a bit each time. One might say, well you have done them for months so it must be easy. This isn't about easy or hard for me. This challenge keeps me on track. I am not sure I would have done them in the beginning each day if I didn't have the challenge. Now, the challenge are very personal for me. They help keep me accountable. You all help me to be accountable.

Everyone is doing terrific. It is one day at a time. That is all we can expect of ourselfs.

Shy -- Well, maybe you were TOO proud of me. :^: But, I did keep two of them going and for me the no alcohol is by far the most important. And I did have two whole weeks (with pauses sprinkled in there) without sugar and that is GOOD! I feel the same way you do about challenges. They don't get easier. In fact, things aren't really so much about being easy or hard most of the time. It's just about DOING them and that's where these challenges come in to the picture. Mindfulness, having to count, having to make a note of what we've done or not done. I'm back on the no sugar today and I'm continuing with the no alcohol and making the fresh vegetable juice. Already finished that for the day. :yes:

girlie -- Good work! You love your scale, but I'm shaking my head at mine. I feel like I'm losing weight but the numbers ain't budging. :shrug: They have held at an INCREDIBLE HIGH :eek: ...just incredible.....for four days straight now. Sigh......the no alcohol challenge fell with a crash yesterday. I feel awful about it. I really do. That's pretty bad, 15 days with no drinking over the last 18. Well, then again, it's not so bad when I say it that way. In fact, it's pretty good. :yes: OK, I'm going to pick up and keep going. I really did like the feeling of not drinking. It was good. Starting back up. Completing Wednesday here. The vegetable juice is still going. Three more days to go till a successful completion. There's no messing that one up! Yeah!

Shy~ it's not really that good that the exercise I'm doing is getting to be a breeze, because that means that I need to up the duration and effort of my exercise.:(

Red~ I hear you about counting calories, that's what I really need to do as well. But I'm starting with daily journals as one of my challenges to keep me aware of how much food I'm actually consuming daily.:o

My goal is to be able to keep my daily net calories at 1200-1400 calories like Shy does, but it's tough 'cause I'm always hungry and I get headaches.:dizzy:

Heh there. Not much action around here, eh? I am utterly, utterly disgusted, depressed, dismayed, debilitated by my weight. I am at an unbelievable high -- 74.4 kg -- and don't really know why. I mean, I'm NOT eating that much, yet the weight keeps creeping on. It's like I can't control it. I exercise, I stay away from sweets, oh, blah, blah, blah. Time for drastic measures, knock this body into action again. I'm going to do it. I just have to.... :^: But, really, I'm kind of scared, because I don't really understand why I'm gaining when I don't feel like I'm eating that much. Thus, time for TWO new challenges, the journal and fruit. I put some fruit in the veg juice but I want to force myself to start eating fresh fruit too. I find I don't because the facilities at work are disgusting, filthy and any preparation of raw things grosses me out. But, I can get around it if I try...I think. I think eating fresh fruit will help me keep the calories down. They are apparently way too high.... :(

I know a lot of my lack of energy is mental, due to depression about work etc. I'm going to try to analyze what gets me moving and try to intentionally put that into my thoughts, my actions.

Sometimes it means to intensify the intensity of the workout. For me squat down further when I do kick backs, raise the knees higher when i do knee lifts and kicks. Sometimes just a little for intensity really makes the workout harder. What kind of exercising are you doing. Sure maybe you should add more maybe you should add something different. So far, the videos I do are enough along with the resistance training. There is always a little higher I can lift my arms or a little higher I can kick my feet lol. It takes me all day to eat 1200 to 1400 calories. Look up the food pyramid. You have to eat a ton of food to get the required amounts of the four basic food groups. Sorry don't have the time tonight but tomorrow I will post what I had today. Will give you some idea. I eat fruit before my morning workout and then breakfast after. Carbs before workout, protein after workout. Then I break lunch down into two meals and dinner into two meals and then a snack. There isn't much time in between when I eat. If I go more than 2 or 3 hours I have terrible headaches.

You know when I think I know just how much I am eating fit day tells me other wise. I really have to use the site to keep track of things.

I am starting booze and sugar over. Wasn't committed to them and so was mucking around. Have reaffirmed my reasons for doing them and starting afresh. Took a pause on veg juice yesterday because it was either that or risk not going to the gym. Got home too late to make the stuff and didn't need to. So still OK on that. I had the fruit. It was nice. Went to a shop and got the apple, cut it up and ate it at work. It was so much better than eating some junk. Keeping the journal DID make me think about how much I was eating. I'm thinking of eating as spending and exercising as money in my pocket. Really going to try to get back in shape now. :yes:

You know, what we are doing is like money in the bank. We are taking care of our selfs and that in turn means our body's are more healthy. In the long run we are going to spend less on the upkeep of the body. Well, more like money in the checking account than money in savings lol. Think of all the great clothes we get to buy when we hit goal :)

Shy~ I basically have been doing some video aerobic exercises.
I have an exercise bike and a treadmill, but have not used them in a while.:(, same thing with the weights and resistance bands.:o (I'm hopefully getting there).
Thanks for the advice on how to try to increase the intensity of the workouts.
I would love to see a sample of your day's meals and snacks and how you are able to break 1200-1400 calories.
I look at my journals and I don't think I have any day which is below 2000 cals. and I'm still hungry.:(
I sure hope the hunger and headaches soon start to go away.
I have not lose any weight in the last few days, but I haven't gained either, so it seems like now I need to eat less and up the exercise.

Red~ you can do it. 74.4kg. doesn't seem to be your highest weight. My starting weight is the highest I've ever been.:(
Actually you'd be surprise how much calories you're actually consuming once you start to count them.

I got through another day and even got to the gym. The weight doesn't budge and it's so disheartening. Really disheartening. I know it's too early when you look at the cold numbers of calories in and calories out but the effort is so great. To even get to the point of not gaining or to do healthier things that likely have no effect on weight takes what to me seems to be enormous effort and then it's like, for what? I'm thinking I have to throw all health thoughts to the wind and just go for the weight loss, healthy or not....and then I think again and say, no...that'll be short-lived. I don't know, how do you get it ALL together?
On a challenge note, it was hard not eating sugar. The hardest part was simply remembering I wasn't supposed to be. The same for the fruit. It hadn't occurred to me to eat fruit, then I remembered and bought an orange and ate it outside after the gym. Felt weird but knew this was the only way. If I wanted any longer, it'd be too late at night and I knew I wouldn't eat it. Sigh.

girlie -- You caught me on the not-quite highest weight, but I meant the highest weight in a LONG time. And it is disgusting. I haven't felt so awful about the weight, felt so HEAVY in a long time. I think it's the muscle loss that accompanies it this time. With the "money in my pocket" thing I was thinking that if I work out or move my body in some way, that means I have something to spend on eating, in other words, I can "buy" food (calories) with the money I've earned through exercising. Money in money out. If I think of that I am hoping to compensate for the change in lifestyle. I used to be able to get a lot more exercise in. These days, I am too tired, too depressed to move so much, BUT I wasn't cutting back on eating. If anything, I was eating more, for sure DRINKING more. Hoping the simple, cold, hard, logical look at the numbers can help get me back on track.

Ah, thanks girlie. :hug: But it wasn't such a big loss. It was only 400 grams. That posted starting weight was an all-time high (well, when I was weighing myself...) so the budge I was talking about was from 73.6 to 73.2 kg, not all that much. Still, it was nice and has given me a bit of home. :^: Today, I got into some pants thinking they were my usual big ones and they were very snug. I thought, oh, no, why? maybe it was from working out at the gym...sigh...then I realized that they were one size less and though snug, my gut was not hanging over the top like it used to. Hurrah! :cb:

I don't see any difference in my weight from all the exercise I do. I see a difference in toning, in sizes I wear but not in weight. Exercise for me is for health. I know it takes time to see differences. I don't see any large difference. You are talking 1 pound a week for me. It is slow going but it is going. Nice going on the veggie drink. Yuck, you have stamina I sure don't have.

Now I can really see why I can't seem to lose weight.
First of all, I'm eating WAY TOO MUCH.

Wow, you are exercising more than 2 hours daily, and here I am barely getting in 30mins. daily.
Ok, I did up the duration and intensity of my workout for 3 days now.
I'm up to 40mins., lifting arms and legs higher as you suggested, doing deeper squats and started to use some very light free weights. So, I've had some sore muscles the past 2 days.:(
If I could also lose 1# weekly and keep it off I'll be more than happy.

Red~ 5 pints of beer and I would burst.:lol3: Beer makes me feel really FULL. I like a nice glass of red wine with my dinner, it satisfies my appetite and makes me eat less.

I've started to count calories, but I'm not yet ready to define the daily calorie limits as yet.
However, the daily journals are really helping me to stay within a ballpark figure.

Nice to see you back. How has the mono been going? That can be a slow very long process to get over. You make sure you get lots of rest and don't take on to much before the body is ready.

It took me months to do the amount of exercise I do lol. There are times the knee doesn't allow it and I get a couple three mile videos in and that is all. Hasn't happened for awhile but I have a feeling tomorrow might be one of those days. I got my 10 miles in tonight but the knee is really tight and doing side to sides or even knee lifts makes it start to hurt. I might take it easy for a couple of days and only do my required 6 miles a day. I was smart enough to build into my challenges if I can't do more than walk slowly through a video that is ok. I only use 2 pound dumbbells when I use them and that is more than enough for me for the walking videos. I know I should use more but I'm not lol. I started out using 16 oz tea bottles filled with water :)

Please do not think my eating plan is the only way. There are some days I eat much more, there are days I have to really make myself eat everything I have planned for the day. If I know I want to have something, say BBQ ribs. I save up a couple grams of fat a day out of what I allow myself and a few carbs a day for a few days until I have enough saved up to have those BBQ ribs. Not sure it really works that way but it keep me accountable lol. I worry much more about being in line with the amounts I allow myself for a week or two weeks than I do for a single day.

Wow, what a bunch of lightweights you are! :lol: I learned the art of beer drinking in Munich, had some of the BEST teachers! I'm talking 5 PINTS, not 5 LITERS, which is what we'd have been knocking back in old Bavaria! :lol3: OK, OK, nothing to be proud of, I know, and, NO, I did not have 5 pints, it was just an example. Still, I could have had....anyhow the point was that I have to keep track of calories instead of thinking of it as ONE night out on the town...which doesn't sound so bad, eh? ;)

Ok, mozying on along with my challenges. Sugar fell again today. It's because I'm rethinking it. I didn't want to eat sugar for two reasons, one, I pig out and the calories rocket and two, it makes my skin look bad. BUT...I've been more or less tracking calories and figure if I can keep to a limit somewhat then I'm going to allow it for a while, until I'm ready to knuckle down again.
My juicer died on me..well, it did and then revived but the motor sounds shot. This triggered me to break out the brandnew juicer I got over a year ago and never used. So, I did and wow, is it a doozy! Breville 800. Powerful stuff. I bought it mail order from the States and had to buy a step up transformer for it too. All that and I hadn't set it up to now. Oh well, the old one is out in the garbage, an ungrand end to a faithful servant... :( Thank you, juicer! :thanks:

Well, lift off almost happened yesterday... but it IS HAPPENING today!!! YAY!

I am adding a sleep challenge - I need more of it. When I don't get enough, I miss workouts and eat like crap.... SO - here are my challenges...

Hi, all, I've been m.i.a. for probably a year or so, but am back - with news!

13 weeks pregnant as of today:D

So, I won't be losing weight, but wanted to rejoin the 21-day challenge gang to help keep me focused and eating healthy. To that end, my challenges will be:

1. exercise 30 minutes daily (2 pauses)
2. eat at least 2 servings of vegetables daily (3 pauses) I am really good about eating fruit, but not so good with the veggies:(
3. input all calories consumed (2 pauses) I'm not going to define a calorie range right now, particularly as my doctor would like to see me gain 2 pounds by my 16-17 week checkup; but want to track what I am eating to try to prevent noshing on cheese toast all day.

I will be officially starting my challenges on Saturday (I am on a "no exercise" mandate from my doctor through tomorrow, and want to start all three on the same day:))

Red! It's been awhile - are you still working with horses (or was it just that you have a horse?) I am proud of you for knocking off the smoking again!

Apple - I am so sorry to hear about your dog:hug: It is hard to lose someone you love so much.

Good to see some things never change. I have been MIA for quite awhile also. I am not sure what challenges I want to start, but needed to get back here to see everyone. It is nice to have folks to talk to, that don't get bored with tales from the weight loss trenches.

I have decided to get my midlife crisis out of the way early. I sold my horse last summer. I got accepted into law school, and start August of this year. I got a tattoo. I am currently training for a sprint distance triathlon on 6/1/08, and will probably be training for a 1/2 marathon after that. I have been making a lot of changes in my life, and hope to keep making more. I am still struggling to make them stick though. This is the time of day when I really want to forget I eat healthy. But, I have been doing pretty good, and having one "splurge" a week. And so far it has just been one meal, not even a splurge day. But, it has only been about 2-3 weeks since my stepsister decided to be my own personal Jillian Michaels, and help me kick my own arse.

Work is still insane, and I am counting down how long it will be before I DON'T HAVE TO SUPERVISE ANYONE EVER AGAIN!!! I will make sure of it :D

So, hi to all. Red, glad you keep this site going. I look forward to talking to everyone. My posts may be sporadic over the next couple weeks, but I will be here.

My challenges, all level 2's will be 1) no soda, 2) daily core work.

You are so right. Sleep is very important. When we don't sleep enough we don't, feel our best, eat like we should nor exercise because we just don't have enough energy. That a fantastic thing to add to your challenges. Think I will add that to mine next time.

I wish i were a tad over 5 foot. I would be able to weigh more than I can lol. I am not over weight I am under tall.

Good morning all. Just wanted to check in quick. Even though it is only 6:30 in the morning, I am having a hard time with food cravings. Not sure why, other than stress over work. I am meeting a friend for a lunch meeting today. Have a bowling banquet tomorrow. So will be hard enough to find healthy choices, so to stay on track over the next couple days. I will do all i can. I am figuring I will take a pause on the soda tomorrow, so I can drink something other than water at bowling.

Hope your knees feel better Shy. What do you do for exercise? Do you take anything for the knees?

:hug: This is such a great challenge. I have been reading all of your progress day by day and would like to join this motivated group. Lately, I've noticed that my issue is snacking. I'm good with staying OP (WW), but I get snacking with the 100 calorie packs and WW ice cream, angel food cake...plan allowable foods but still moderation is the key. I am with my challenges.

No snacking: Day 1 - 3 pauses
88 oz. water/day: Day 1 - 2 pauses
Exercise 5 days/wk: Day 1 - 3 pauses

I think I'll stop here before I get myself into trouble. :dizzy:

Rdye~ at your height, your BMI is within normal range so not only will you lose weight slower, but it will also be more difficult to lose the weight.
At my lowest weight, many, many moons ago- there was always the 5# I could never get rid off.:(
I'm not saying that it isn't doable, but you have to be prepared to be patient.

Hi all. Welcome BBaller. Thanks for the welcome back Yorkie and Fish.

I was accepted at Marquette, Fish. I really like the personal touch I have received there, very warm. And they have a dedicated part time program, so I will be able to keep my day job, and only have classes 2X/week. It will take longer, and summer school, but be worth it.

Everyone else :wave: Day 2, both challenges met. Hurray! Off to catch a cat nap before doing part of a 3rd, working out, and going in to teach a class. I never thought I would ever say this, but Thank God For Monday!!

Hey all. Quiet weekend. Survived so far.

I am feeling a bit down and disgusted. I have been making very good food and exercise choices this week. But the scale just isn't moving. Doesn't seem fair somehow.

I am going to have to just wait it out, and not get discouraged, I know. But it is hard. I have my bowling banquet in a bit, and it is really hard not to give in to "Well, nothing I did worked anyway, so why not . .. . " FOOD PORN!!!!

However, I'm afraid this will be short as it feels like I have busted my right shoulder.(long story):(:mad:, and I'm even finding it difficult to type.

I hear you on the scale not moving, I guess we need to be patient.:(

I have severe pain on my right shoulder, can't barely move, so I'm not sure if I will be able to continue with my challenges or wait it out till it heals. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck with your shoulder Yorkie. I hope you are feeling better soon, and go get it checked out if it isn't better. I made not horrible choices at the banquet, considering what options where there. My sister kept me in line when I was tempted to go back for more later :D

Took a pause on the soda today, as I needed something to drink and keep me going. Did do my crunches.

Hi there, everyone. Things are not going too well here. I'm starting everything over and including a no smoking challenge. Yes, sad as it is, I started again while drinking. But, I can stop it! And the no sugar is being changed for a "minimal" sugar challege. Since I'll be journaling, I'll keep track of the sugar calories and see if I need to go back to an all-or-nothing-type challenge. I KNOW when it's more than a little, but I'm thinking I do just want a touch.

Nothing wrong with starting over or readjusting our challenges. Sometimes we just take on to much at one time. Remember the turtle won the race.

Crunches are good. I have been doing that ab buster with Leslie Sansone with the walk away the waist belt. I have lost an inch in my waist in one month. Haven't lost that much at one time before. It must be working. I do 40 min of it 3 times a week.

Oh girl you take it easy. I had a frozen shoulder in one shoulder and tendinitis in the other. It really can hurt. You might want to find out what you should do for yours so you don't make it worse. Have been busy the last few days getting nothing done at all but doing stuff from the time I get up until I go to bed lol.

Why oh why is exercise so hard to get back into:(. I tried to do a pilates dvd this weekend and made it about 12 minutes before I had to stop. I did manage to walk for thirty minutes (2 miles) on the treadmill today during lunch.

At least I have been squeaking by with the vegetable challenge.

1. exercise 30 minutes daily - Day 1 completed (2 pauses)

I've just started the Cambridge Diet to help kickstart my weight loss. I'm quite terrible with food and controlling what I eat so I think keeping food under control until I can learn to eat properly may help me.

I don't know if anyone has tried this diet before but if you have, I'd appreciate any comments, information, support :)

Planning to do this for the next 4 weeks at least, possibly 8, I'll see how it goes. My goal for the next 21 days though is to lose a stone. I know it sounds like a lot, but I'm being hopeful. I'm currently 203 pounds (91 kg) - aiming to reach 84kg in the next 3 weeks if I can, and 78kg as a mini goal for the next 7-8 weeks.

I exercise pretty much everyday for an hour, so I'm hoping that will help.

Must drink 2 litres of water though to flush out toxins - that's going to be difficult, I can barely drink a litre :S

Must also stick to the program and tuck my scales into the cupboard - I get quite obssessive about weighing myself - and water weight always disappoints me and makes me quit. Can't risk that!

Hi belladonna, so are you joining us or just wanting info on the diet? Sounds tough! You could make some of the aspects part of a 21-day challenge...such as drinking your water every day. My shoulder is on the mend.
I haven't been able to exercise for some days, so I decided to just start over.
I never missed my daily journals and fruit challenges, but I do like my challenges to be on the same days~ to avoid confusion.

I started to exercise today, with minimal arm movements, trying to avoid complete range of motion. Still some pain,
so I'm not yet quite ready for lift off.:(:mad:

I am craving food porn right now. Just got done swimming. I found us a longer (real) pool, and didn't do as well with the longer distance without stopping. Feeling kind of bummed about that. And have had a weird headache all day that won't go away. So, I know that is why I want to eat bad stuff. I will not order in. I will not go out again for anything. There are limited options for making bad choices here. I would have to get REAL creative with ingredients. So, I will make the healthy choice because my health and meeting my goals is more important.

Thank you very much. I had to reduce the tension on my stretchy bands a bit my one shoulder was really starting to hurt. You take it easy and let the body have time to heal.

While I think your challenges are terrific. Maybe you are trying to take to much on at one time. Just doing without the cigs is a real big deal. Then you add booze to that and my gosh those two together would be hard enough. Then you pile on a few more tough ones. Girl you really want to much out of yourself to fast at one time. Cut yourself a little slack and remember you are only human. I worry about you beating yourself up to much.

Nice going on the challenges you did get thru. All we can do is start over and learn from the past. We are not super hero's we are just ordinary people.

No, Shy, the "beating myself up" part is the things I've been doing, drinking too much, smoking, bingeing on sugar....cutting those things out and incorporating the veg juice and crunches is doing something nice for myself. Oh, of course it'll be hard, but I do better with ultimatums. Thanks for the concern though. Heck, that's why I've allowed myself three PAUSES, a nice word for an excuse.

Hey I'm in with:

(shouldn't really need to be here but I really can't eat the stuff so hoping to make it a good habit with this)

Exercise 40 min a day - 2 pause

Limit Carbs - 3 pause
( i know this is a tad vague but I eat way too much bread, pasta, potato etc and need to get rid of it, maybe replace with fruit? :D)

I'll tell ya how day 1 went when it's over :p

redballoon I'm kinda doing the same thing as you and completely changing everything bad at once with having a harder challenge I'm more likely to stick to it.

lupin, Welcome! :welcome3: Good to have you aboard. No problem on the "tad vague" carbs. I understand. I was doing the same with sugar after going all or nothing. I thought I could but I can't. I prefer all or nothing. Makes me feel so righteous maybe. :lol3:
I'd been doing some of the these challenges at separate times and have gotten through on them. I just thought it was time to try to tackle them all together. Either that or go super easy with just one and make the others what we call stealth challenges, not declaring them but trying them out on your own and once into them successfully "coming out" about them and declaring them.
Either that or just an "extracurricular" which is one we just try out on our own, yet never declare.
Anyone, as you can see, I went for the outright declaration. Am well into Day 1 here and so far so good. :yes: Am eating as I type.
By the way, is that Leicester, England?

Ye I tried out the fruit challenge yesterday, ate one apple, that was it, I'm so gonna at least get through day one .... i hope :p It adds so much more determination by writing it on here, the thought of writing in 3 days time saying day 3 completed :D.
Well I'm just about to jump onto the treadmill and do my time, eaten special k for brekkie. I'm thinking poached eggs for lunch, and I have to have toast soldiers to dippy into them, hence the limit not completely cut out.

Jolly - are you feeling better today? Way to go on sticking to no soda even with the bad day:carrot: Surprisingly, I did not really had a problem giving up the diet soda/caffiene. There were about 2-3 weeks where I still had a diet coke once every 2-4 days, but I think it has been almost a month now!

Shy - I am glad your shoulder is feeling better. Do you have a video you do with your bands? Or do you just know the routines/exercises? I am so bad about weights (as in, I will completely ignore them for the cardio machines) but maybe I would do the bands.

Red - heck yeah, you are strong!:lifter: That is a shopping bad full of challenges! One day, if I am brave, I will try the no sugar challenge. Perhaps when soylent green is reality;)

Ryde - oh my gosh! Aren't weekends always hectic? And they are supposed to be our downtime!

Lupin - welcome! And good luck with the fruit challenge! I am fairly good about eating fruit, but am bad about vegetables.
