The with increase in egg prices here in Hollywood [we're up to $2.80 for 18] I am finding alternative acceptable breakfast foods. I was just wondering what others eat for breakfast, if anything at all.

I make BLT's with romaine lettuce for bread. I also make CLT's [BLT with chicken]. I even started having a big salad with chicken or steak. I've even started having leftover dinner.

Anything I might have at any other time of the day! The other day, I had a bowl of vegetable soup for breakfast

Even with the increase in egg prices, I still find them to be one of the cheapest foods I can have frequently. I am kind of sick of scambled eggs or omelettes, but I am big into egg salad right now. I also like to cook some eggs over easy and serve on top of ham and cheese.

I'm also very into turkey sausage links. Pre-carb-watching, I would eat them with honey mustard. Now, I eat them with a piece of the spreadable Laughing Cow light cheese (I like the French Onion flavor).

There are also times when I'm running late and just crunch on some pistachios in the car on my way to work.

I have eggs. But to be honest with ya, $2.80 is really cheap. It's about .18 cents an egg. Even if it went higher in price, I wouldn't think a 2nd thought.

Here in NC a dozen eggs are $2.63 to $2.77 so I know what you mean. I started my diet on January 30th of 2007. And every day since then I am having one boiled egg for breakfast with only salt and pepper sprinkled on it plus some Israeli Salad with it. The Israeli Salad is one cucumber chopped up in tiny pieces with the skin on for fiber etc... and then one half of a tomato chopped finely as well and one half of a small onion diced very finely. Then one tablespoon of olive oil, course sea salt, course black pepper, vinegar and even some lemon juice and parsley. And I eat a small bowl of that salad with my egg each morning so far. I plan to weigh on March 1st. My starting weight is around 224 and I'm five feet six and a half inches tall.

This isn't very low carb but I have fruit for breakfast. I am doing low carb but not extreme low carb. So for me the fruit works.

two boiled eggs. Eggs are the cheapest protien food here in Nova Scotia. Nothing else sticks with me like eggs do. Theyre also fairly low in calories overall.

I make a breakfast casserole that I eat on all week. It contains eggs, sausage, heavy cream, cheese, mushrooms and green peppers.

I want to know where I can find 18 eggs for less than $3! I think I pay over $4 actually. Apparently we have designer chickens in Maryland.

As for breakfast I eat the same thing every morning: 2 egg whites (I just don't like yolks) and 3 pieces of bacon. How boring, right? I know my answer isn't much help, but I guess I just haven't gotten sick of it yet. :)

As part of my plan I'm supposed to have 2 bacon and 2 eggs, but this morning I had 2 bacon and a few cubes of cheese.

I also have 1 cup of grapefruit juice with it.

I'm about to make some hard boiled eggs -- yummy!

I have another question regarding food..... how many meals do you have a day?

I have my 3 meals (breakfast, lunck and dinner) plus two snacks, sometimes one. The snack I always have is in between breakfast and lunch, I tend to be hungrier in the morning than in the afternoon. For breakfast I usually have a protein shake, so my mid morning snack will be a boiled egg and cheese or string cheese and low carb yogurt.

What do you guys think?

I was paying $1.62 for 18 just four months ago and $1.19 a year ago. Mind you, this is from Costco not a regular grocery store. Eggs are definitely more expensive at the supermarket. I never buy eggs from the supermarket unless they are on sale $1 a dozen. You must have designer chickens laying your eggs in Maryland CrabbyCakes!

Limeswirls - I have had isreali salad and I really love it. I am going to have to make some of that for next week.

Jillybean - You should try raw unsalted almonds or macadamia nuts [Dr. Atkins favorite]. They are almost the perfect balance of protein, fat and carbs. Perfect for us LC'ers. I also have a teensy-weensy love of raw unsalted in-the-shell sunflower seeds. This is one of those hand-to-mouth foods that usually don't have a huge impact becuase there isn't enough time in the day to eat enough of them. Have you noticed a trend here, i.e. raw, unsalted. No salt, no bloating. Somewhere I read that raw nuts were better for your body. If I find a link, I'll post it.

I think I eat about 6-8 times a day. I break up my main meals in two just because it is easier for me to eat a little with the kids and the rest of my food usually an hour later.

I generally eat 3 meals a day, and don't often snack - if I do, it's generally a bit of cheese.

Breakfast so far has been scrambled eggs with bacon & mushrooms, poached salmon with poached eggs on a bed of lettuce, smoked mackerel with scrambled eggs - I've even had leftover cauliflower fauxtato with garlic and black pepper and butter and bits of bacon and chicken, or a weekend brunch of steak and eggs and green salad. It varies, but mostly does contain eggs and or bacon.

Sylvia, I just don't care for unsalted nuts, and I won't force myself to eat foods I don't like just because they're healthy. But, no matter, because I no longer buy any kind of nuts at all because I was eating too many--not something that's easy for me to control, so now it's out of my house!

CrabbyCakes, I feel your pain. I think I paid $3.19 for a dozen eggs last night. Granted, they were Eggland's Best instead of store brand/generic, but still. Not sure how much it was for 18, but it would obviously be more than that. Still, though, it's still a relatively cheap food. Until the day they're $6 a dozen (50 cents an egg), I doubt I'll find a cheaper breakfast! And even then, that's only a buck a day for 2 eggs!

Wow! I'm so jealous of all you "egg" people! I can't eat them anymore. I don't know why...but when I turned 30, I just would start upchucking (bla!) every time I would eat, smell or think of an egg! So, unfortunately, I'm limited at breakfast time.

I usually just have 1/2 atkins protein bar and coffee, water, 1 oz NONI juice. Joyce

I stick to a protein shake and a string cheese......boring I know. But I never liked eating breakfast, and this is the least invasive in the morning.

Hello all, new to the board! Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I buy my eggs at the Farmer's Market, so I usually pay 2.50-4.50 for a dozen, but for me it's worth it. Personally, I find them to be tastier and fluffier in omlettes, fritatas, etc. I also get tired of eggs and bacon/sausage/turkeybacon/turkeysausage. When that happens, I usually eat a leftover grilled porkchop or other such leftovers. Thank goodness tho that I like and can eat eggs.

I won't pretend to be an expert on Atkin's, so I'm not sure if this is "Atkin's friendly" or not, but I use Aria brand all natural women's protein mix in vanilla. It is "certified low glycemic by the Glycemic Research Institute" in DC. It has 3 total carbs per serving, 1 of which is fiber, 1 sugar (so I guess 2 net carbs?). It is a 50:50 combination of whey and soy protein (14g protein per serving). It is sweetened with a little fructose and stevia. I think I found mine at Trader Joe's, but it's not specifically a TJ brand, so I'd think you could find it other places as well.

Pudge - Do share your experience with grapefruits with us. I, for one, have always wondered if that whole grapefruit thing worked to speed up fat loss. I remember (way back in the day) my Mom going on the "grapefruit diet"..ha...remember when that was big??? Probably about the same time when that rope on the door knob ab/body sculpting mechanism came out!!! Okay..okay..now I'm really giving away my age.

I see you've lost alot...anything to do with the grapefruit and why? Thanks. Joyce

I used to make tortilla's with egg, cheese, sausage, veggies inside...boy was it good. You don't need alot of cheese or sausage, just a smidgen for flavor. I remember buying these tortillas by the case when DH and I were both doing atkins. I'm thinking of buying them again and get the bread out of my house.... 9 gms of fiber girls whooot :fr: http://www.latortillafactory.com/jadworks/ltf/jwsuite.nsf/ViewSelection/4268019D4EFFAF018825723A0074F6FA?Open&site=Home*ViewSelection=Tortilla_Talk**mb We would buy the green onion flavor mmmmmmmm !

Also I would make deviled eggs and turkey bacon for breakfast...not alot just enuf for flavor.

Thanks for that post Leenie...wow..sounds delish! Damn...I wish I could eat eggs!!! I guess it would taste great without the egg too. I'm just afraid to start with the low-carb bread/pita, cuz last time I did atkins, and lost the weight..when I added low-carb pita, I started craving carbs!! I think for now...I've gotta stay away from low carb breads.

Any suggestions for us people who can't tolerate bread??? Right now, I have 1/2 Atkins Advantage choco/peanut bar and coffee/water for breakfast. I need something that I can eat on the go in the morn. Busy, busy busy...so before ATkins, I used to skip breakfast. Thanks. Joyce

Egg muffins is another thing I used to make and you can even freeze them.

Spray w/Pam a 12 hole muffin pan, put crumbled cooked sausage or cut up ham or bacon or whatever you like in the cups. Some broccoli or spinach or asparagus would be good too. Add grated cheese, cheddar or montery jack or swiss. Don't over fill it w/the meat & cheese, like about 1/2 way or 3/4 at most. Beat 8 eggs with lt cream or half and half, just a splash and spoon egg mixture into the cups. Bake 350 degrees, maybe 15 minutes or so, you'll see them start to brown.

The possibilities are endless, you can add any kind of cheese, meat or veggies, they are wonderful to freeze. In the mornings I like to grab one or two out of the freezer and by the time I get to work they are defrosted and ready to heat.

Bambi...maybe use less eggs and more meats and/or veggies ??? I'd experiment... can you tollerate egg beaters or egg whites??

Ugh, those egg muffin cup things sound so good, I was going to make some, but I just went to gether ingredients only to find I have no frozen chopped spinach like I thought. I need to get more veggies into my days, so I don't want to make them with just meat and cheese. I'm thinking spinach, onion, maybe a little tomato, crumbled bacon, and cheese. Now I have to go to the store!

Today's breakfast was salad with tuna: 2 cups raw spinach, 2 cups romaine lettuce, 1 lg tomato, a can of tuna & 3 Tbl mayo. This is not a "conventional" breakfast but it was good.

Okay Leenie...you've sold me!!! That sounds just tooo good. Ya know...I've never tried egg beaters, but I've heard of them. What are they? Are egg beaters to eggs what splenda is to sugar? I do love eggs...just don't know what happened. At about age 30 I would just get totally naucious around them. Weird though...cuz I can eat deviled eggs and foods made with egg, even boiled eggs, but not fried. Fried eggs and I'm running to the bathroom!

But...I've gotta try those morning egg poppers...they sound great and it'll be good to have something other than the 1/2 atkins bar. To be honest...it's starting to get old.

Thanks so much...I really appreciate the recipe & advice. Joyce

I thought you said eggs make you vomit. :?: I'd stay away from egg beaters if eggs make you vomit. They are mostly egg.I've never tried egg beaters, but I've heard of them. What are they? Are egg beaters to eggs what splenda is to sugar? Egg beaters INGREDIENTS:
Egg whites (99%), less than 1%: Natural flavor, color (includes beta carotene), spices, salt, onion powder, vegetable gums (xanthan gum, guar gum).

Thanks Soulbliss...and yes, I did say that eggs make me vomit. But let me be more specific. This is weird and I don't know why, but it started when I was about 30, I was pregnant with my 2nd child. I used to have bacon, egg, cheese sandwiches every morning. Then suddenly, I started vomiting. I thought it was morning sickness, but after I delivered her....same thing. As a matter of fact, one bite of a fried egg and "blaaaa".

I've been scared to eat a fried egg. I can sometimes tolerate egg foo young, and when I say tolerate I simply mean hold it down! That still makes me nauscious but at least no upchucking! I would like to find out if there's someone else out there like me? I'm gonna start a new thread on this issue.

I'm also going to try to see if I can tolerate the egg muffins...hope they can stay down....this is soooo crazy..I'm getting scared just thinking about eating them...I guess that episode I had when I was pregnant (which went on for quite a while before I realized it was the eggs), really freaked me out mentally...just the thought of eggs cringes my face...even though I like the taste. Crazy..huh???? Sorry for the long ramble...and thanks for listening. Joyce

Thanks. It's just that I have mentally decided that 2008 is my year. My year to conquer everything..(health, fears, challenges, well-being, etc.). And to be honest...I've always limited myself to "safe" things. In the past, if something worked...I would just "repeat" the same thing over and over and never venture out to explore new things.

This time is going to be different. That is why I'm going to put this sh*t to rest. I am going to find out what is wrong with me and eggs! Maybe it was the hormones, maybe the yolks (I know alot of people just can't tolerate yolks), maybe just the combination of all that bacon grease mixed with the egg...I don't know...and I got sooo freaked out that I just "ran away" from the egg entirely. Well, not anymore...I'm going to make this damn egg muffin tomorrow morn. I'll letcha know! Whew! Boy that felt good to get off my chest! Again...sorry for the long ramble and thanks for not making me feel like a freak! hugs and smiles....Joyce

Jings, those egg muffins sound good! If only I had an oven! But I think we might have a mini-oven thing at school...sometimes Early Years bake, so there MUST be something lying around. Hmm. May just have to investigate that!

As to "conventional breakfasts" - you know, breakfast cereals are a pretty RECENT convention. For centuries in the West, breakfasts were pretty much the same as any other meal - and, really, when you think about it, it's pretty darned bonkers that our sense of what's appropriate to a cooked breakfast is so limited. Why pig products, and not cow, chicken or fish? What is it about bacon that's supposed to be morning-appropriate? Whacky.

In Thailand, breakfast food is just the same as lunch or dinner food. In Egypt it tended to be beans and felafel. So I say: eat what you want! Breakfast is an artificial construct!

Heh. That said, more often than not I do have eggs-and-something.

Yesterday I had a BCLT scramble: fried bacon with scrambled eggs and slivers of paprika-flavoured Gouda cheese served on a bed of lettuce and cherry tomatoes. It was DELICIOUS!

Try putting more veggies and meat in there than egg....experiment and see what happens (don't forget the cheese mmmmmmmmmm).

Hello all...I have been reading all of your posts regarding the low card diet and have learned a lot. I am new to this so please be patient with me. I just figured out how to send a message!! (I think!!) I have been at this since January 2, 2008 and have lost about 17lbs. so far and have several more to go. I am trying the low carb thing and have recently hit a plato and lost nothing for about a week and a half. But I also had three bad days within that time frame. So thanks for the information. I hope to become a pro at this eventually. :dizzy::dizzy:

Hello mustloosein08 and Welcome!! You get a hang at posting and changing things around.

Don't let your plateu stop you or discourage you. You are not the only one all of us get to a point where our body needs to catch up. Just make sure you are not eating too many carbs, too much sugar and that your portions are moderate and you are excercising. Also, a big suggestion around here is to do measurements as in some instance you loose inches and then lbs.

17 lbs is awesome so just keep doing what you are doing and you will see those numbers on the scale go down.

Wow! 17lbs!!! That great!!:D I wouldn't beat yourself up. It's normal to stall a little after such a rapid weight loss. Your body is still burning fat...just trying to hang on to the water. Hang in there and the scale with catch up!!! Great Job! :carrot: Joyce
