One idea would be to make your own sauce using canned tomato sauce, canned tomato paste, and whatever stuff you want to add (some Splenda, spices, diced tomatoes, other veggies, meat, etc...whatever you like).

For the lazy times when that's too much work, I have discovered that Ragu makes a light no sugar added tomato & basil sauce in a jar. I found it at my regular chain grocery store with all the other jars of sauce. The only ingredients are tomato puree (water, tomato paste), diced tomatoes, onions, olive oil, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, basil, parsely, and spices. It is safe for both Phase 1 and 2. It also has only 60 calories per serving as opposed to the average 100 for "normal" jarred chunky sauces.

The Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce that comes in a can has a No Sugar Added version. It's pretty good. If you have a Trader Joe's they have a bottled marinara sauce that has no sugar.

Think JILLY and SCHMOODLE just about covered the possibilities . . .

Just wanted to mention that what you are really looking for is a NO SUGAR ADDED sauce -- check the ingredient list rather than just the nutritional panel. Tomatoes have a fair bit of natural sugar and that will be shown on the nutritional panel; that is not the kind you are trying to avoid.

Good Luck . . .

good point meowee!
The Trader Joe's is also a "no sugar added" sauce, as opposed to "no sugar".

I found a Shur-fine (store brand) Garlic and Herb spaghetti sauce at the store last week that had no sugar added. It wasn't labeled as such, but after reading the ingredients list, I found that it had no sugar added. It was also only 45 calories per 1/2 cup and it was the cheapest on the shelf, since it was the store brand.

If you are really looking for tomato sauce instead of spaghetti sauce, many brands of it don't have sugar added. I usually buy the shurfine store brand or the Wal-Mart brand. Neither have added sugars.

The lowest carb sauce I've found so far was at Kroger (chain here in Richmond); their store brand Garlic and Herb spaghetti sauce is 45 calories/serving, 9g total carb with 2g fiber-and on sale this week for 99 cents! (I think is normally about $1.49 a can) I actually was very pleased with the flavor of this one-not quite as good as what I would make but is great if you're in a hurry!

I use the Hunts no added sugar. Its pretty good. I also really like the Whole Foods one. Not sure if you have whole foods....but I think this sauce is better than Hunts!

Amazon.com has some great sauces on sale right now called "Scarpetta" that have no sugar added. They are so good!

Kroger is owned by the same company as Albertsons, if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the tip! I just ordered a 4 pack of the Marinara + 4 of the tomato/arugula. Using code PASTASA3, it was 50% off, so I got all 8 jars for $21 total. It's direct from Amazon, too, so it qualifies for Free Super Saver Shipping if you spend over $25.
