I don't tend to hear that from people from Houston. I'll be there in a couple of weeks (my dad lives there and I'm a former pseudo Houstonian.... unfortunately).

Oh man. There is something deceptively beautiful about there being two feet of snow on the ground, and you're wearing shorts and a tank top and calf-high boots. I miss living in Calgary if for NOTHING else than the chinooks!!

I've lived all over the place since my dad was in military, (Calgary, Ottawa, North Bay, even the middle east for a while) but my real hometown type place is Orillia, Ontario, and I go to university in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

...I spent a whole summer in Ireland, and everytime I told people I was Canadian, they would refer to my country as "Canadia." By the end of the summer, they had me doing it accidentally. Crazy Irish folk.

Hey Jelb. I probably live a few blocks from where you did in calgary. I recently bought a condo on what used to be the military base, CFB Currie Barracks.

We have a chinook going on right now... Yesterday it was -29 with the windchill today it's +2! Not warm enough for shorts but still better than yesterday.

In Calgary we didn't live right on the base, but we did when I lived in Manitoba..
This is where I lived in Calgary:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&cat=&address=erin+woods+dr+se&city=calgary&state=AB&zipcode=
Bit further away from you?

And yeah, Ontario's never quite as cold as Alberta was, but we're rockin' about -15 to -20 with the windchill I think in the last little bit...
Plus 2, that's some nice weather, though! Not a phenomenal chinook, but decent! :D

I live in northern Manitoba (the prairies are a good 600 km's south of us) -- I'm 5 degrees latitude away from the arctic circle actually and there isnt much up here. So it's -50 with the windchill right now... only -35 without the wind :) I grew up here.. did university in Vancouver, BC and now I'm back living in the winter weather testing capital of north america ;) (and -40 celsius is -40 F... it's a quirky little fact that the two systems meet up at that point)

Go Gators! I'm a South Florida Girl born and raised (attended the University of Florida - clearly a state that is better than Ohio...curvaceous!!!)

Anyways - I only moved 3 hours into North Florida for my college years, further into South Florida for 2 years, then back to my small ocean side town 2 years ago. I'm a whiner when it gets to below 70F here...yikes! I cannot stand the cold nor could I imagine living in it.

I hope I don't sound too stupid, but what the heck is a chinook? I tried googling it - but it just kept talking about wind...so that was confusing to me...how can wind be beautiful? I love a nice toasty breeze myself...but cold wind? I'm lost :(

Slimming & gatoramand: I think only people who have lived in western canada know what a chinook is, sorry bout that. Basically a chinook is a warm wind that generally comes from the west. Calgary, where I'm from get's them all the time in the winter. A chinook can bring the temperature up 15 degrees or more in the span of a day. For example it was appox -20F yesterday with the windchill and by noon today is was 36F. Chinooks are most common in south central alberta and become less common the further south, and east you go. As a side note chinooks often cause the coulds to form beautiful arches in the sky. Go to Google images and goodle chinook arch and you'll see what I mean. Chinooks also cause migraine headaches, due to the the change in barrametric pressure.

This is from wikipedia:
The eastern-slope chinook phenomenon is a Föhn wind that results from the movement of high and low pressure systems over the Rocky Mountains. As the wind moves over and through the mountains, the moisture in the air condenses and falls out as precipitation, warming the air by releasing latent heat. Then the air is warmed and dried by adiabatic compression as the air descends the leeward side of the mountain range.

Warm air descending the slope can also displace an existing cold, moist air mass, enhancing the temperature increase and moisture decrease observed with the Chinook.

The turbulence of the high winds also can prevent the normal nocturnal temperature inversion from forming on the lee side of the slope, allowing nighttime temperatures to remain elevated.

Quite often, when the West Coast is being hammered by rain, the windward side of the Rockies is being hammered by snow (as the air loses its moisture), and the leeward side of the Rockies in Alberta is basking in a chinook.
