12-22-2007, 06:46 AM
Have a safe trip, Schatzi! And enjoy your holidays with your family, too!
Happy 1st day of Winter! :snow4: :snowglo: :shocksn:
We have all our gift shopping finished, but I still have to face the hourds of crowds in the grocery store. I don't really mind it all that much, though. It's all part of the excitement of the season. :xcheer: We're planning on going to the mall this afternoon, but just to sit on a bench with a cup of coffee and watch the holiday shoppers. It might sound a little weird, but I really enjoy just sitting there, people-watching. :)
So what is everyone else doing on this last weekend before Christmas?
:candy: :clause: :tree: :wreath: :rudolph:
12-22-2007, 06:56 AM
We are house sitting for some people we know this weekend. Going to go to the stores and do the normal shopping. I love shopping this time of year. All the people, Christmas music playing. I am never in a hurry so nothing bothers me except the people that just don't know how to drive and since they are around all year long that is nothing new lol. Sounds lovely to sit on the beach and watch the world go by.
12-22-2007, 08:02 AM
Schatzi Dollink, God-speed on your journey. Follow the map, not the star, OK?
Shy, nice of you to pop in. Remind me to be as organized as you next year!
Cottage, sitting and relaxing with Jake while you watch the crowds sounds just great. Maybe even better with a coffee and Bailey's?
Yesterday was really hectic but I got a lot done. My son, DIL and GD were to come today but they've moved it to tomorrow. Good thing, because I'm not ready. I also want to go to the Mayor's Levee today and to a BD dinner party tonight. I've had some crappy Christmases but this will NOT be one of them. Two out of 68 isn't bad!
Today I will finish my Goodie Baskets for Claire and Doug and Rob and John and get them delivered - aka out of harm's way. I do have a minor grocery shop and a trip for booze planned but that's it, I hope. There is a bit of wrapping and a wall hanging to finish but..... Having company just before Christmas Eve is not a great idea if I am having my post-Church party on the Eve! Remind me about that next year!
'Tis the season to be as jolly as possible. I hope you find some laughter today!
12-22-2007, 08:13 AM
:DHappy Holiday Weekend!!
Schatzi: We sure will miss you around here! Be careful and good luck getting all your shopping done! Mewwy Chwistmas!
Cottage: People-watching at the mall sounds like fun! :D Once we arrive in Austin, Mom and I are supposed to head out to the mall for some last-minute gifts for her to give. Should be interesting. I'm definitely not used to the Christmas crowds anymore! Congrats on getting your shopping done!
Shy: Hope you find everything you need while shopping! Have a great weekend of housesitting!
Me: Well, I was able to get all of my work done yesterday and close down the office early. It was nice to come home and get an hour's head start on everything that needed to get done. The laundry's done, the house is straightened, the presents are wrapped and our bags are packed. We're scheduled to leave in an hour, but we'll see because DH is still in bed! I don't blame him, though. We were both up and moving about before we went to bed and didn't feel the need to turn on the heaters - it's freezing in there!! :brrr: I'm sure it's nice and toasty under the covers for him! Plus, he's never in as much of a hurry as I am to leave, so I'm sure I'll have to exercise some patience this morning. :tantrum:
Other than that, I'm just looking forward to the break and a nice visit with the family, some of which I haven't seen in two years! :yikes:
Well, enough blabbering, Kim! :blah: I've got to start getting ready so I look presentable when we see my parents -- I'm so excited!
Have a great day and I'm sure I'll check back in tonight!
12-22-2007, 08:16 AM
Ruth: We were simul-posting, and it's no wonder, since it takes me forever to find the smilies I want! I'm glad your company is giving you an extra day to prepare and have some fun! What's a BD dinner party? Anywho...I hope you have a lot of fun today and that you have plenty of time to finalize your preparations!
12-22-2007, 08:39 AM
I think BD is birthday Kim. But I may be wrong as I have birthday on the brain (mine is tomorrow).
Cottage Have a great time people watching.
Schatzi Have a wonderful trip an be safe.
Ruth Good luck with the preps for the company.
Well the scale finally budged and dropped 2 pounds and after the last couple days I'll take any victory/good news I can get. So I changed my weigh in day and my ticker. Have a great day everyone I'm off to play in the snow in the mountains and birhday dinner with DF.
12-22-2007, 08:41 AM
Nice going on the weight loss.
12-22-2007, 08:57 AM
Thank you Shy. The last 2 days have been a bit challenging so I don't know if it will stick but I changed my ticker in hopes of keeping my motivation high for the upcoming festivities. I just saw your ticker. You're only 1 pound away from the half way mark. Congratulations.
12-22-2007, 09:14 AM
Good morning my dears! I had an early Christmas present this morning of a 2 lb. loss. At least it puts a little distance between me and the big 200, so if I gain a little over the next week, I can stay in onederland.
You're right, Schatz, today will be a long one. It's cleaning and baking day at our house. Hope you have a wonderful visit with your family!
cottage, Happy winter to you too! In our town the girl scouts handed out luminaria kits and asked everyone to set them out last night for the solstice. It was so pretty in town! I did my groceries last night and set a new record for the amount spend on groceries in one trip. The $45 bag of shrimp put me over the top. Anyway, I was there at 10:30 last night, and very tired, but the store was not busy, and I didn't want to have to do it today.
Kim, I'm glad you were able to get through all 98 - sounded like a lot of work! Have a great visit with your parents!
Ruth, busy as usual, sounds wonderful. Makes me wish I was close enough to get invited to your party!
Dawn, 2 must be the magic number this week! Hooray! See, even if you lost a battle yesterday, you are still winning the war!
So today we are making: **Food Porn**
Oatmeal Raisin with Chocolate Chip
Chocolate Cherry Truffles
The last three are almost SB compliant. We are supposed to have 10 dozen just for the cookie exchange party tomorrow, but I think I may call the hostess and ask if we can only do 5 dozen. Of course, we would only bring home 5 dozen. As far as I'm concerned, that's more than we need. I was a nervous wreck this week when there were cookies in the house. I expect the next week to be very challenging. I mean really, the cookies terrify me. I am so afraid to end up back where I started. But, once a year, I don't want to disappoint the family.
12-22-2007, 10:56 AM
I LOVE SNOOPY AND WOODSTOCK!!!!!!! (When I was little, I called them Boopy and Doodock.)
Well, I have a few days off before Christmas, but I work Christmas Day through the rest of next week. Need to get all my stuff wrapped up nice as I'm doing Christmas with friends tomorrow and with my family on Christmas Eve. Oy.
Abdul's in town this weekend so I'm sure I'll go shopping and hit the Barrelhead sometime today, as that's our place. Grilled Cheese sounds pretty good to me right about now!
Hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Christmas weekend, in case I can't make it on here again! Love you girls! May you be blessed!
12-22-2007, 11:45 AM
Hi everyone. I've been away from the board for a long while. Glad to be back.
12-22-2007, 03:45 PM

I just got back from getting my shopping done for Brian. I hate that I feel I can't do more for him but money is tight right now. I got him a book on gerbils and a $50 gift card from the pet store so he can get two gerbils and a cage. I also got him a gerbil toy for a stocking stuffer. From the craft store I got him some wallpaper horses that he can use to decorate his room once we paint it this coming week. And I got him some candy canes and bubble gum for a stocking stuffer.
He's got over $350 in WalMart gift cards from selling popcorn so he will be buying all the paint and stuff that he needs to use to redo his room. We'll still need to get a table or cabinet to put the gerbil cage on but he can find it and I can pay for it and he'll let me use the same value to buy groceries at WalMart. We looked to see if WalMart had a nice table but we didn't like the ones they had. I'm going to suggest we check out some unfinished furniture places and find something with storage to put all the food, bedding, etc inside.
We've been busy with pool stuff too. This morning it was 58 and nice but it will be in the 20's tonight with gusting winds of 30mph so winter is here.
12-22-2007, 07:07 PM
Merry almost Christmas everyone!
We had Tom's squadron party last night and it was pretty fun. I got to meet some of the folks he works with who I've heard about over the past year and haven't been able to put faces to. That's always interesting! (You know, one of those times where you have to smile and stop yourself from saying, "Oh, *you're* Sgt. Suchandsuch!!!") One funny thing is that the commander's wife gave me a big hug and we had a little conversation. I've never met her before, but I've e-mailed back and forth with her, as she started a spouses' group for the squadron. Tom was all excited that I gave him "an in". He's so funny! The kids survived with the babysitter, although she didn't do a LICK of cleaning up after dinner (which I had made for them) so I had to do dishes and sweep the floor after getting home from the party. Not that I ever expect the babysitter to scrub my house, but at least rinsing off the dishes would have been nice so I didn't have to spend a half hour scraping dried-on lasagna from our plates. What are you going to do???
Barbara, you should try some garage sales for that hamster stand. I bet once spring rolls around there are going to be plenty of people redecorating and you'll be able to get a steal! We've also found pretty decent kid-friendly furniture at IKEA. You have to assemble it yourself, but the price is right.
Gonnabe, hope the meds clear up your lungs for you so you feel better by Tuesday!
FoodObsessed, it's nice to "meet" you! Keep checking in!
Lisa, have a lovely time with Abdul. You always speak of him so fondly. I forget...is he your brother?
Schmoo, 197?! You're on fire, woman!
Dawn, motivation indeed! Keep up the good work!
Kim, have a good trip! I've just recently discovered the wonderful World of Smileys myself and they're awful fun! :D
Ruth, have a great visit with the family. I'm jealous as we won't be able to see ours this year...
Rennie, have fun shopping!
Linda, have fun people watching! My in-laws love to people watch!!!
Schatzi, drive safely!!!
Time to get a good breakfast in my belly and then get all gussied up for church. I was chatting with a friend at the homeschool group on Friday and mentioned we couldn't find any molasses for making our gingerbread houses and she offered hers since she's done with it for the year, so we get to make gingerbread after all! That will be our project for tomorrow. Today we're making crafty stockings so the kids can have something for this year (our regular ones are in California in the storage locker, like everything else...).
Have a great weekend!!!
12-22-2007, 10:34 PM
Just a quick flyby kinda of busy at work but incase I don't get a chance MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone! I hope you have a wonderful time.
12-23-2007, 12:19 AM
Merry Christmas to you, too, Rose!
12-23-2007, 05:23 AM
Good early morning. Woke at four with my mind running full speed with stuff I need to do today so I'm up and at it. Hershey is rather disgusted - she had breakfast and is now back asleep on the couch.
Church is at 8:30 today - The Hanging of the Greens. We were supposed to do it last weekend but the snowstorm screwed that. Today the temperature is going to 48ºF with rain so it sure won't be canceled. My family are arriving shortly after that so I need to scurry around a bit to get beds made up. I'm really not ready for my party tomorrow night but my darling DIL Wendy will help me with stuff tomorrow. Always have your son marry a competent woman!
The birthday dinner last night was great and a good way to start off Christmas a bit early. Good friends, some wine, good food and great conversation - what more do we need?
Love and light to us all today.
12-23-2007, 05:55 AM
You know how sometimes your kids say something and it takes all of your focus to not laugh because they might get their feelings hurt, erronously thinking you're laughing *at* them?
Kadyn: (standing in the middle of the kitchen with her little hands on her hips)
Me: Don't you have more letters that go in your bag?
Kadyn: (furrows brows) No, no more leh-ers fur dat bag.
Me: Oh. I must have been mistaken.
She could have been twenty-five! What a character!
Ruth, I hope you get things in order for the company and party. I'm sure your family wouldn't mind making up their own beds. I even read in a Martha Stewart magazine once that you should leave the sheets folded on a guest bed (of course, Martha had a beautiful wide ribbon tied around them!) so the guests know the sheets are clean!
We're having taco bake tonight. I de-stemmed some fresh spinach and sauteed it in garlic and mixed it in with the refried beans (that I had mixed with sauteed onion, cumin, chili powder, and pepper). The soy crumbles have a bit of taco seasoning and some sauteed mushrooms mixed in. I can't wait!!!
Have any of you used fat free half and half before? The store was out of whipping cream (I know, serves me right for going on the 23rd!) and I needed it for a cheesecake recipe - just a couple tablespoons is all the recipe calls for so I figure I might be OK.
Up and at 'em!!!
12-23-2007, 07:06 AM
Good morning All!
Enjoy your day, Ruth! It sure sounds like you're going to busy the next couple of days.
Kara, I think that fat free half & half should work just fine. I just bought a carton of it yesterday. If you have evaporated skim milk, that will work, too. Are your little ones getting all excited about Santa? There's nothing compares to the joy of Christmas with children.
I'm not sure what we're doing today. First, some breakfast. I'll check back in later, though. Enjoy your day!
12-23-2007, 09:00 AM
Morning, gals! It felt nice sleeping in late. Brian is still asleep but we have lots of time before he has to get up since there is no Sunday school today. It's 27 degrees out there and i'm going to need to go out and sweep down the pool in a few minutes.
Robert and I got into it last night when he tried to tell Brian he needed to work on his Science Fair project at 8:30 last night. He's spent the entire afternoon moving stuff out of his room so we can get ready to paint and he's got stuff prepared for his project. We know what he needs to get done during the two weeks he is off from school but it works better if he relaxes after 8 (as long as his chores are done which they were). Anyway, I thought everything was smoothed over when I went to bed but Robert is gone this morning so I don't know. Maybe he is working out at the gym. I hope so for his sake.
Brian has chosen his paint colors and we'll brave WalMart later today to get the primer and paint and other stuff we need. That's a great idea about IKEA. I actually haven't been there since they opened the one in Frisco. Maybe we can go during the week as long as I bring my laptop in case I get paged. It's close to the office but about 20 miles from home.
Time to get the oatmeal on.
12-23-2007, 09:23 AM
We don't really "do" Santa, but they are very excited for Christmas! I just did the most adorable project with them tonight. It's just now 10:30 and they're climbing into bed, but it was so worth it! The little angels came out adorable!!! I had intended to get some cookies baked tonight as well, but as soon as I started to cream the butter and sugar, the mixer started making a funny smell and smoke curled out of the motor area! Eeek! I quickly unplugged it, pushed the kids out of the way, and set it outside where it could cool off without setting my house on fire! Do you think that was some kind of a sign that I shouldn't eat any more cookies?!?!?! :o
Barb, who does science projects at 8:30 at night??? You were right to stick up for Brian!
Good Morning Everyone
Yesterday turned out to be a long crazy day. Mike took me to lunch, we went to the mountains to collect pine cones, to a local candy shop to watch them make candy canes, and then to dinner at my favorite restaurant. Today is brunch with my mom and godparents. I did pretty good yesterday but I'm a little worried about today. Oh well you only get a birthday once a year right?
Hope everyone has a great day.
12-23-2007, 09:46 AM
Happy birthday, Dawn!!!
So, how do they make candy canes, anyway??? :chin:
12-23-2007, 09:56 AM
Good morning! Glad to see alot more on this morning - it's pure motivation to me.
Thanks for all the get well wishes - it seems like everyime I get on a good track with my weght loss someting comes up to put a glitch in it - I will get through it and I will succeed.
Lastnight dh & I took my mom to see ps I love you - awesome movie and I think it really hit ome with er being as shejust lost my dad
Gotta get last minute christmas shopping done today as the stores will be a mad house I'm sure tomorrow.
I hope everyone has a happy and blessed day
12-23-2007, 09:59 AM
Thank you Kara & Gonna:)
They bring sugar, corn syrup and water to a boil an heat it to like 460 degrees. Then they pour it out on a slab of marble and it starts to cool . While its still pliable they seperate in two and put red in half of it. The yellow (soon to be white) half they pull out on a taffy hook. Once that is done. they cut off little pieces and make a red and white stripe flag. The "flag" goes over a huge brick of white and then they pick it up and swing it (it kind of looks like a guitar in shape now) and then from the "handle" then they roll out tiny candy cane sticks and one person molds the hook into them. I think I enjoyed the show more than the kids there. And low and behold I didn't eat any. I did have two glasses of red wine but that's another story.;)
12-23-2007, 10:03 AM
Hi chicks, just a quick hello, we're off to the mother-daughter cookie and ornament exchange/champagne brunch in just a bit. I spent all day in the kitchen yesterday - in all, 9 batches of cookies and treats. Of course I had some. The South Beach chocolate cherry truffles taste good, but didn't really turn out - they never really firmed up. Either because I didn't measure closely enough or because I used frozen cherries and they weren't drained enough. I made sugarplums, which are just dried fruits and nuts in the food processor with a little juice to bind them, then rolled in balls - they are so good! And no added sugar.
Happy Birthday Dawn!
12-23-2007, 10:10 AM
Thank you Schmoodle. Where did you find the SB choc cherry truffle recipe? Even if they never firm up I can't see how those ingedients together can be anything but good ;)
12-23-2007, 10:22 AM
:bday2:, Dawn! :hb::celebrate::gift: Enjoy your meals with your family this morning! We all deserve a little ingulgence on our birthday!
Schmoodle: Congrats on another 2 lbs! :carrot: You're getting away from 200 fast and furiously! I think I'll take a page from your book once I hit onederland!
:clause:, Lisa! Hope you're having fun with Abdul and that your Christmas celebrations are wonderful!
FoodObsessed: Hello and welcome back!!
Kara: Kadyn sounds adorable and like she has just the right amount of sass! ;) I'm glad you were able to come up with molasses, but were those the cookies that the mixer conked out on? The angels are so cute. DH and I are on the fence about Santa Clause for our kids - we have some time - I'm not close to having any yet!!
Pearl:  and Merry Christmas!!
Ruth: I hope my MIL thinks I'm competent, but she won't let me do anything, so I guess not. Hope everything is going well for your preparations! Did you get your wall hanging finished?
Cottage:  and have a great day!!
Barb: I agree with Kara, Robert needed to be put in his place. Do you think that he relied on you to be both mom and dad and now that you're splitting, he feels the need to validate himself as the dad again? Just a theory. I hope that today is great and that you and Brian have some time to relax and enjoy Sunday together.
GonnaBe: Have a great day!
Me: Just got through holiday torture. I volunteered to make cinnamon rolls for my dad's Sunday School class. :stress: What was I thinking?! I did have a lick of icing, but nothing else! Breakfast this morning will be oatmeal with a banana. Thank goodness those cinnamon rolls are out of the house! Not too much going on today. I need to finish off my sister's scarf and make the towel angels for the women in the family. That should only take about 3 hours altogether. Other than that, we'll just be hanging out with the family - and I plan on taking my sister's dog for a nice, long walk.
Hope everyone's doing well and staying warm!
12-23-2007, 10:30 AM
Kim, glad you arrived safe and sound! Tom wants cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning. Heaven help us!!!
Schmoodle, hope your cookie exchange goes well! Anything mother-daughter should be a hit!!!
Thanks for the movie recommendation, Gonna. I'll have to check that one out!
Dawn, your explanation of the candy cane making process was great! That would be something fun to see some day. I remember going on a field trip to a pretzel factory as a kid and loving it!
I still have the floor to sweep and wipe up and then I'm hitting the sack. Tomorrow's a big day of gingerbread making (as long as I can find someone to borrow a mixer from), present wrapping, stocking making, and food prep for Christmas day. Should be fun chaos!
Happy Sunday all!
12-23-2007, 03:07 PM
Hey everyone! Happy Weekend :)
I did 10 days of phase one and since then, I have been on phase two for two weeks. Since then, I have lost exactly 8 pounds. I love this lifestyle so much and even though I modified the plan, I find it so amazing. I never would have thought that I could eat all of this delicious food and still drop weight!
I just wanted to drop in and share my little story!
12-23-2007, 04:26 PM
Hope you are either getting everything done or taking a nap. I'm trying to decide between the two.
My house is so full of cookies, it's a South Beach nightmare. But we had fun at the party, and DDs, DS, and DH are enjoying the selection.
Kara, your little angel is so cute. I thought I had seen all the handprint and footprint crafts there were, but I've never seen that one. My parents still have my kids hand and footprints from 9 years ago up in their bedroom.
Dawn, I have these little ceramic Christmas baskets and I was going to put the truffles in them for a gift for my brothers and their wives, but I can't use the truffles for that now, and although they taste good, I don't plan to eat them all. So sad, but I think they are headed for the trash.:( I could stick them in the freezer and use them as an occasional treat, but history has shown I can't be trusted. Anyway, the recipe is from the taste of summer cookbook and I hope you have better luck, but here it is:
8 oz bittersweet chocolate (preferable 70% or higher cacao), chopped
1/3 cup fat free half and half
4 oz cherries, pitted and chopped (about 1 cup)
2 T unsweetened cocoa powder
Place chocolate in a heatproof medium bowl. In a small saucepan, heat half and half over medium heat. When simmering, add cherries and return to simmer. Remove from heat and pour mixture over chocolate. Add pinch salt and stir until chocolate is melted and half and half incorporated. Place in freezer until chocolate is set, stirring every 2 minutes. when the mixture begins to lose its pudding-like consistency and set, scoop out 2 tsp and roll into a ball, repeat. Roll balls in cocoa powder . Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to a week. Makes 32 pieces. Each 2-pc serving is 80 calories, 6 g fat, 1 g protein, 9 g carbs.
It was very easy to make. If you use frozen cherries, you are supposed to thaw, drain, and blot them dry. I left them to drain in a colander, and then put them on a paper towel, but next time I will be more aggressive about drying them.
Thanks, Kim, I want to get as far away from that number as I can!
Hi RocknRoll, nice to see you here! Great job so far!
12-23-2007, 09:28 PM
Kara, I consider Abdul my brother, but he's not really. He calls my parents his "earth parents" (he IS Superman, you know) and has his own bedroom at their house when he comes home from Indy. He's one of my best friends in the world and I miss him, so it's nice to see him when he's home.
We went to Barrelhead for dinner and then out for a couple of drinkies and caught up. He's seeing someone, and it's serious, FINALLY, so I'm very excited for him. He's all in love and stuff, which is really funny because no one every saw him settling down. He's 38 (although he'll tell you he's 35) so it's about time!
Better stop procrastinating and wrap these danged presents I bought for everyone I know. What was I thinking? I also should eat some dinner....
Hope you girls have a great Christmas if I don't make it on in the next couple of days!!!!
12-23-2007, 10:53 PM
Awww! Glad you guys had a fun time! I am going to be up to all hours of the night here wrapping presents...
Thanks for the recipe, Schmoodle!
Rocknroll, way to go on the weight loss! You are a dieting heroine losing all of that weight at the holidays!
12-23-2007, 11:12 PM
Schmoodle Thanks so much for the recipe. I know what you mean about "can't be trusted" I was looking at the ingredients wondering if I could even get them to a completed treat ;)
Today was great. I did really well with my eating. Had steamed veggies and eggs at brunch. Had 1/2 piece of cheesecake and decided I didn't like the way it tasted. That was definitely a first. Then we had chicken stir fry for dinner. I got my mom started on SB about 2 months ago and since it will only be her and I over the holidays I think I may be in the clear. I hope everyone had a great day with much accomplishment and naps.
