South Beach Diet - Any else for a November 11th/12th P1 start?

11-10-2007, 03:32 PM
Hi all!

I've been on the Beach before...a few years ago. I had success with it but fumbled on Phase 2 and promptly gave up. This time WILL be different. I've gained 35 lbs. in 14 months (since my wedding) and I need a regimented way to get myself back on track.

Enter Phase 1!

I am making my list to go grocery shopping to start (re-start?) Phase 1 tomorrow. I made an excel (numbers here on my mac) chart of my food, including snacks, for the week as well. That way I know what I am eating and when. I weighed in last week at a whopping 241 pounds! I will weigh in again tomorrow (I really tried this week so I hope that number is lower!) and post here.

If you are starting Phase 1 again, feel free to post with me in this thread! Or, if you are way beyond it, feel free to help us out!!

Here's to a great OP 2 weeks!

:carrot: :cb: :broc:

Hey Jenn!
My groceries come tomorrow and my cold is gone so is Ph 1 all the way to kill these cravings before thanksgiving!
So tomorrow I'll be making quiche and either soup or my chili to eat lunch off of all week
the only big challenge will be next weekend. Its My Mom's birthday and I volunteered to make cake (masochism?)
But If I can Hurdle that Bring on the Gravy!! well the Reduced fat broth for my dark meat?
Anyway I'm in Lets Melt some Flab!

11-11-2007, 05:43 PM
Hey KO!!! We can totally do this! So far so good for me today on P1! Had eggs with red pepper, mushroom and fat free cheese and turkey bacon for breakfast, celery and laughing cow (garlic herb, YUM!) for a snack, a large salad complete with cucs, carrots, red pepper, celery, lettuce, perdue short cuts chicken and a bit of light cucumber ranch dressing for lunch. I forget what my other snack is but then it's Taco Bake for dinner, YUMMY!!!

11-11-2007, 06:58 PM
I'm officially starting tomorrow!
This is the gastronomic agenda Ph 1.5 b/c I have a big bag of baby carrots!
I split my day into more snacks

1 or 2 Ricotta muffin
celery and carrots herbed turkey breast 1 slice rf cheese

1 cup chicken veggie soup

String cheese
15 walnut halves

Turkey burger with Warm spinach salad

11-11-2007, 10:19 PM
Yes, I am officially RE-starting tomorrow, Monday the 12th as well.
Took me a little while to shop this week, schedule has been crazy, and the supermarket nearest my house has had lousy produce lately. If the mushroom sin my fridge looked like the ones they had for sale, I would have thrown them out! Shame on you, Marsh Supermarket!

11-12-2007, 09:20 AM
welcome gary!!!

So today looks like this:

B: Sausage egg and cheese cups
S: Yogurt
L: Leftover taco bake (YUMMY)
S: Celery and Laughing Cow
D: Shrimp cocktail and salad

What's on the menu for you today?

I think I may try the gym tonight. I can't promise anything, as my foot is under doctor's care, but I may try...

Have a good, OP, day everyone!

11-12-2007, 10:27 AM

I did south beach a few years ago and never stuck to it. My hubby and I are Trying to concieve and My Dr recommended SBD to help regulate my Blood sugars (type 2 diabetic)
This morning was rough I HATE eggs and I bought egg starts instead thinking they would be better and had a really hard time getting them down. I used to make scrambled eggs and load them with ketchup so they would just slide down and i didn't have to taste them. Lunch will be much better salad with tuna on it. Yummy. I REALLY wish I could have ketchup for those eggs.anyone have any other ideas for breakfast?? I would love to hear them. Thanks ladies and have a great day WE CAN DO THIS

11-12-2007, 11:46 AM
I'm not a huge egg fan but I really like them with salsa (lots and lots of salsa!). Actually, almost everything is good with good salsa :)

11-12-2007, 11:48 AM

11-12-2007, 12:19 PM
I would think you could eat any SBD legal protein with veggies for breakfast. I know in Britain they eat fish sometimes at breakfast. They also broil tomatoes and mushrooms.

11-12-2007, 12:21 PM
Yeah, don't think just eggs for breakfast. Cook just one with beans and salsa? THere is yogurt too. Veggies are great, as are leftovers!!! :)

11-12-2007, 01:38 PM
One thing I love for breakfast is Chili
Ground Turkey Salsa Extra beans
with some Shredded RF cheddar
Or a veggie burger with some cheese or a Morningstar farms veggie sausage patties Not the links bleh!
Or maybe some Lentil soup would be good?

11-12-2007, 03:24 PM
:welcome3: to all the P1ers, new and old!

Sounds like you're off to a great start!

Jenn, what happened to your foot? :(

WannabeMom, I detest eggs. :barf: I simply will not ever eat them. So, I had to come up with tons of creative things for breakfast in P1 and after. :) You'll find my ideas and tons of other ones from our wise Beachies in the Breakfast Alternatives to Eggs ( thread. There's also a new recipe that uses eggs, but is getting huge raves in this thread ( the recipe forums.

Hope those help! :dust: for all of you!

Laurie -- I had surgery on it in March (platar's Fascia release) that was unsuccessful. I was supposed to be in a boot for 5 weeks (after physical thereapy for 4 weeks) but didn't wear it today as it hurts more IN the boot that out! I have to call tomorrow to tell them that.

The new guy (DW's doc) wants to try everything again before another surgery -- but that one may not be covered by insurance so I don't know where we go from here!!??!!

11-13-2007, 12:12 PM

Hi chicks.... I am joining in with ya's, but I am doing ph 1.5. I have done ph 1 too many times now I just can't do it again. So I am only adding fruit back.
My ticker is lying big time right now, I think I will weigh in tomorrow morning and corrected it.

Breakfast- sausage
Lunch- bqued hamb, on a bed of lettuce, tomatoe 1 oz of cheese, drizzled with a little italian dressing. And a small fruit salad.

Supper- is going to be fish dredged in ground almonds and carrots and turnip.

Sacks- not sure. But I have not been really hungry today.

Have a great day chicks

11-13-2007, 02:16 PM

Yup -- if you've drank a LOT of water or the time of the month or even shaved, lol, the scale can flux as much as that!

I shaved my legs today and hope to be down 4 tomorrow :lol3:

But in all seriousness, yes, totally possible.

Today for me:
B: 2 breakfast cups
S: celery and laughing cow
L: salad with red bell pepper, cucumber, celery, mushrooms, lettuce and Perdue pre-sliced chicken breast with a balsamic vinegarette.
S: yogurt
D: Eggplan Parm
D: Ricotta Dessert

And of course, I am chugging my water!

11-13-2007, 02:30 PM
Oh, but Tasha, I'd caution you to stick to one weigh in day as tomorrow, if you drink a coffee or a soda or something, you may not see a loss and you really do want the average loss (so unless you are weighing in each day and taking the average...)

Getting on the scale every day drives me batty because I see a loss one day that's huge and then maybe a gain or not much of a loss the next...

11-13-2007, 03:16 PM
I'm crave master General!!
2 slices of cheese
2 ricotta muffins

carrots celery and LCL
lunch 2.5 meatballs

Dinner chicken stew

My craving for salt and sugar is OTT My TOM is all kindsa wacky and is going to get worse b/c I have to get anti biotics

Jenne! I see you shave about as often as me I think I'll wait for the 10 lb drop!

11-13-2007, 06:57 PM
:lol3: KO!!!

I was just in a small, 2 hour meeting with COOKIES! AND CANDY.

I didn't have a bite. A sniff, yes, but there was no harm in that, right??

I am so proud of me right now!

11-13-2007, 07:06 PM
I'm proud of you too, Jenn! It feels good, doesn't it?

11-13-2007, 07:08 PM
:cheer: GO JEN GO GO JEN GO get down with you Defcon level 1 self!

11-13-2007, 07:22 PM
no Barb. It actually feels HORRID. Seriously. Now all I will think about are those d@mn tea biscuits. But nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

Tell me I am right here! (I've never been thin so I don't know!)

Great day for you yesterday junebug, keep up the good work...
Day two for me... I really need to get some of this weight off I am feeling icky......

11-14-2007, 10:19 AM
I hear ya LC!

B: bacon, eggs, homefries
S: mozz stick
L: Eggplant Parm
S: small salad with chicken
D: Chicken and Veggie Packets
D: sf popscicle

I have to go food shopping today groceries for the rest of the week! Good times...

I am feeling a bit limited on my snacks: yogurt, mozz cheese, veggies and ranch. Anyone have any other ideas? Maybe chick peas?

11-14-2007, 10:44 AM
Hey, P1 (and 1.5) Chickies!

Jenn, your poor foot! :( I'm so sorry! Can you get a second opinion on the second opinion? It sucks to have surgery that's not covered. :fr: I hope you feel much better very soon!!! I'm so proud of you in that meeting...I know it doesn't feel good when you think about the food, but it does feel good to know you can do this! :strong: I haven't been super-thin yet, but even at a size 14, it feels MUCH better than anything I ever felt before...I can't wait to be back there. :cloud9:

Snacks--I love eating homemade 3 bean salad in P1. It has veggies (green and wax beans) so you feel more full, good fats, so you feel full longer, protein, so you feel full longer and have building blocks for the muscle you're making at the gym, and beans for fiber so you don't have to worry about poopy parties! ;) I also like strips of colored bell pepper dipped in hummus. Yummm....

Wannabemom, did you notice that your post has a capital at the beginning of each word? That means you typed your original post in all capitals and the system changed it. All capitals can be interpreted as shouting, so the system doesn't allow it. Try typing in upper and lowercase letters and then it won't turn out like that. :D I love your encouragement!

11-14-2007, 11:06 AM
LOL. I posted a picture of my breakfast on my journal and I am asking people to guess what the "homefries" are :) Fun guesses!

11-14-2007, 11:16 AM
one of my fave ph1 snacks are chick peas with old bay seasoning soo good!

11-14-2007, 11:22 AM
sorry ladies at work i book surgeries and I have to book in all caps so sometimes i forget to turn it off very sorry. I have such a bad headache today. This diet is getting a little hard but I HAVE to do it. I need to get preg and get my sugars under control I keep telling myself it will all be worth it when I'm holding my baby :)I tried the belgian waffles this morning not really a fan I had to put free cool whip on them. You would think with how picky I am I would be thin but I never have been

11-14-2007, 11:47 AM
Wannabe, headaches are very common the first few days of Phase I. We call it the Phase I Flu!

Be sure to get your two cups of dairy and some legumes. That'll help and will also stabilize your sugars as they are slow carbs. Remember this is a GOOD carb diet, not a LOW carb diet.

11-14-2007, 01:26 PM

I was SOOOO grouchy the last few days. Sure, some of it has to do with hating my new boss but most of it is the lack of sugar I think! And keeping my caffeine down.

This too shall pass -- you are soooo right!

11-14-2007, 01:40 PM
Thanks Jenn atleast I know I am not alone :) We can do this nobody said it would be easy but....I have to it's the only way I will EVER get preg so.....

11-14-2007, 02:32 PM
Hi Everyone,

I know that I am late (kinda) joining, but I would like to do this with you guys. I have been dieting/cutting back for over 1 month and half, but recently started sb phase 1. I'm in the second week, but I have cheated some (not too bad). I decided to see if I can join the forum and continue with phase 1 for a little while longer. I have seen a weight loss since starting, but the inches are more noticeable to myself and friends. I have even stepped up and brought the recipe book, but found a lot of recipes on here that I like, wow and creative...Thanks again guys, I really need the support, my partner faded on me..

11-14-2007, 02:58 PM
:welcome: Chokalte!

Yeah, I haven't cheated at all on Phase 1. I figure, if I really want to lose the weight, I can stick it out for 2 weeks. Then, things I "can't" have now will come slowly back into my diet. Who ever thought I'd crave an apple!?!?

Don't stay on Phase 1 longer than the alloted time (I believe 3 weeks was the most?)! Remember, Ph1 is just a step in the right direction, though tempting as it may be to stay on it!

Welcome and we look forward to your posts!

Holy smokes! I thought I was the only one dying for an apple!!! :dizzy: I'm on day 3, PH1 and this is the hardest day, I think. Not to mention I'm not at work and therefore prone to mindless snacking. I'm headed off to the gym right now to keep myself busy for a bit.

I've stuck to the plan, Spinach and feta fritatta for breakfast, chili and cucumbers for lunch and chicken breast and brocolli for supper with soy nut/mixed nuts, ff/sf yogurt and ff/sf pudding for snacks. I've noticed the headache for 2 days, but other than that, I'm going thru a really really tough time in my life so I can't really tell if it's affecting my mood. It's certianly nice to feel like I have structure in my nutrition though.

11-14-2007, 05:21 PM
Thanks Jenn... I appreciate it... I will be stopping p1 next week and onto p2..I am looking forward to going home to make that taco bake and the peanut butter cookies... I am sooo glad I looked at the site again, I look forward to sharing with you all...

11-14-2007, 06:00 PM
Kat: If you ever need to talk about anything, let me know. Good for you for taking steps, even now with other stress going on, to work on YOU! Hate to burst your bubble but PUDDING is not allowed on P1 -- though Jello is! Hang in there!

Chok: The taco bake is YUMMY! I made it on Sunday and DW and I ate it agin the next day. I brought some leftovers in for a wcoworker today and she is going to make it too. YUMMY!

I am heading to the store...maybe peanut butter cookies are in order for tonight! With some Skim milk? yummy!!!! x2!

I decided on Stuffed Peppers for tonight. My own recipe. If I like them, I will let you all know and post the recipe!

11-14-2007, 08:27 PM
Thanks Jenn, for the nice words! No bubble burst here though, it's fat free sugar free pudding. Not quite the real thing, but whatever!:D

11-14-2007, 11:53 PM
correct me if I am wrong everyone else but I still don't think it's allowed as it has starches or something in it!

Check out the thread!

Yeah me I on day 3 today and showing a 4 pound loss...... But I have a headache and that foggy feeling.....Have a good OP day chicks.

11-15-2007, 10:59 AM
Great job LC!

It's Day 5 for me and I jumped on quickly this morning... -6!!!. Off to a meeting. Will be on later!

11-15-2007, 11:24 AM
I totally agree that Day 3 is the hardest least for me. That's the last day of real cravings, and it's almost like my sugar addiction has a mind of its own on that day--it really tries to convince me to give in. But if I hold firm, day 4 is a breeze. :cloud9: Hope it's that way for you all too!

Congrats on the losses, Jenn and LC! :D

Kataclismic, were you saying your bubble wasn't burst because you won't really miss SF/FF pudding or that you were planning on continuing to eat it? :?:

The day is getting worse for me my head feels like this.:bomb::rollpin::frypan:
and my body is shouting at me for something sugary.... I will beat this day if it kills me.... I just want to crawl into bed til tomorrow. But I can't, it is almost playground time and then I have dance class tonight which I can't miss cause our xmas show is just 3 weeks away.

11-15-2007, 12:58 PM
Hi Everyone,

I made the taco bake and the peanut butter cookies and they were a hit...My daughter is 10 and she asked for more of the taco bake. Thanks for the reciepe. I will be eating it for left overs.

Does anyone drink the crystal light? I am drinking a lot of water and had a diet soda yesterday..
Morn - a little taco bake (it was soo good)
snack - turkey bacon and salad (small portion)
lunch - steak and spinach..

11-15-2007, 03:49 PM
Hey Guys,

I started ph1 on 11/12. I am not new to SBD but this time I hope to be able to make it all the way through. I stepped on the scale this morning and I have lost 3.2 lbs so far. I have found that cooking food on Sunday for the whole week helps out alot. Usually I would wait until I was starving to find something to eat. NOT ANYMORE!!! I really need your help to motivate me to stick to this! I know you guys are great at doing that.

11-15-2007, 04:06 PM
:welcome3: Mzthang!

Preparing food ahead of time is a great way to avoid the "I'm so hungry I'll just grab *insert food porn here*!" issues! Good for you!

Huge :dust: for you, LC!!! You can do this!

11-15-2007, 04:28 PM
Ooops, well. I guess I'll be ditching the pudding! My bad. I'm sure the 3 that I've had all week won't totally derail my efforts. Way to go all you losers! That's so encouraging to see results, for me and you!

11-15-2007, 04:49 PM
LC: Hang In There!!!

Chok: I don't remember the peanut butter cookies...hmmm, I need to go find the recipe! Maybe it will be my sweet treat for TUrkey Day!

MzThang: Does the 77 mean that's when you were born? :welcome: to 3FC!!! And glad you posted!

Laurie: Thanks for all the support!

Kata: When do you weigh in? I will send you some :dust:

Me: It'sbeen a hectic day! I packed lunch for DW and I this morning, grabbed leftover "homefries" and cottage cheese for bfast and ran to work. Got here, popped the radish in the micro and FORGOT them there until my 10a meeting. Then they sat out for 2 hours. Darn.

By the time I got back (talk with a collegue about my future here because I am not happy with my boss), it was lunch time. I brought in the stuffed peppers (recipe is pending in the PH1 Entree section) and a salad for coworker and I and I had some chick pea poppers but that's all. I am soooo not hungry (and TMI alert but I've got gas like no one's business!)! Which is a miracle for me.

Off to get some water...and an interviewee. I want to tell these people to RUN and RUN FAR, FAR AWAY. But I will be good. :running:

11-15-2007, 06:11 PM

It sure does mean that I was born in 1977. It was a great year!! What do you do for a living? Why dont you like your job?

11-15-2007, 08:55 PM
Hi Jenn! Thanks for the good wishes, I weigh in on Monday. I used to be a real scale slave, and recently, I've broke free of that! (probably another reason why I've put on 10lbs.) But I don't want to fall back in that habit. I actually don't even want to weigh in on monday, but I have to face the music to see if this is working or not!

My day was right on plan today. However, I shouldn't be eating this yogurt. It has modified cornstarch in it. Dang it. No yogurt, no pudding. I miss my desserts!!! Wah! :stress:

11-16-2007, 01:45 PM
I started P1 on November 12th and so far so good. However, I have been a little hungry even though I am following the plan. Could this but due to my intense workout schedule?

11-16-2007, 02:26 PM
Hi Everyone..Just wanted to wish every great success for the weekend. This is the time I get in trouble. I will be out of town but plan on staying motivated.
Jen - I found the peanut butter cookies here under recipes phase 1 !! I cant post links yest but its forum/showthread.php?t=49623

I also hope everything works out at your job

Good day chicks and happy friday. Hope everyone is have a fab week. Day 4 for me. Although I am not feeling like eating today as I have a sore throat. So today I have only had some frozen raspberries, a smoothie and then an omlette. I don't feel like eating but I know that I need to.... Keep up the good work chicks.

11-19-2007, 12:23 PM
This weekend was a bit difficult for me. I was out of town yesterday so I ate out. I made good decisions but I still gained. When I was eating at home I was doing so much better. Eating out doesnt seem to work for me. Any suggestions?

11-19-2007, 01:36 PM
Diva, you might want to post your question in a separate thread so that everyone sees it--many don't check this thread unless they are currently doing P1, but they may have some great advice! Basically, you shouldn't be hungry in P1. If you are, then eat more! Have some veggies and protein and beans/tomatoes/bell peppers for the good carbs...or some dairy. Okay? With intense working out, you certainly could have a higher calorie need and may need to modify things to eat more...but within the parameters of P1.

MzThang, I find it extremely difficult to do a good P1 while eating out. There is hidden sugar in EVERYTHING! :tantrum: The only restaurant I've found that I can do P1 in is Ruby Tuesday ( I use the salad bar mostly for P1 and then just get veggies and a protein without any topping. They are a great SBD restaurant, but I don't think you have them out there. (I'm from the area and they weren't there when I visited last year...but maybe you've gotten one recently? Check the website...) Once you're out of P1, there are a couple of good places to try: Rubio's has (or used to) WW tortillas, so you can get a lot of great things there. Baja Fresh has a "Naked Burrito" that is basically the burrito fillings on a plate. It's pretty yummy! Noah's bagels has WW bagels and you can get sandwiches on them with low fat schmears. You can get really great "to-go" salads from Trader Joe's to eat with a friend, if you're into that kind of thing. I've found things to eat at Cheesecake Factory (their Low Carb cheesecake with splenda whipped cream and splenda strawberries is a wonderful indulgence to share with a friend... ) and California Pizza Kitchen. I love the sugar-free ice blendeds at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Yumm! Panera Bread has some great options too. There's a Fast Food Guide in the FAQ that you might want to reference as well. Hope that helps! :D

11-19-2007, 01:52 PM
Thanks Beachgal. The problem I mainly run into is when everyone picks a place to go and I have to pick the best option from the menu. I usually pick a salad cuz I figure thats the best way to go. Oh well, I just have to be extra cautious this week.

11-20-2007, 07:08 PM
Hi SB'ers. I'm new to SB, but I started on November 5th. I'm officially out of phase 1, but had such a good result that I'm TERRIFIED to move to Phase 2. The only thing I had on my first Phase 2 day that was prohibited in Phase 1 was, a glass of red wine with dinner. I felt guilty afterward! So far, I lost 11 lbs and my husband has lost 15 lbs on our first 2 weeks! A great start!

I decided to try SB cuz my friend just lost 75 lbs on it since this time last year, and she's been on maintenance for a few of those months, so, that really impressed me, and got me off my duff, and prompted me to try it too. So far, I'm very happy with what foods are allowed. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss CHOCOLATE though...

11-20-2007, 10:39 PM
Hi Thinagainbeginagain, and welcome to the beach! I remember well the scary feeling of starting Ph2! Just go slow and all will be well. Chocolate is the thing I miss/want the most too, particularly at a certain time of month. Just remember chocolate will always be there and you can treat yourself to a bit every now and then on Ph2 (preferable dark). I fight the chocolate cravings with NSA fudgesicles, NSA chocolate pudding, and SF cocoa.

11-25-2007, 01:53 PM
how did everyone do?

11-25-2007, 03:45 PM
I did start on Nov 11. I did lose 5 lbs but I ate out EIGHT times in 2 weeks. I was really careful; mostly grilled chicken ceasar salads (no croutons). Steak w/side ceasar and veggies at Outback one night. (I think the veggies were buttered :o) I didn't cheat on Thanksgiving at all. I'm looking for an opinion here: Should I do another week of Phase I? Thanks!

11-25-2007, 06:41 PM
I started on the 12th and have lost 6 pounds in the first week and nothing in the second. and i did cheat on turkey day. but got right back the next day. felt pretty bad about about not losing anything. so i spent some time on here reading and reading and feeling good. and then i read some were about not losing any weight and that scales lie. so i took out the tape measure 2 weeks early.

and i couldnt beleave it!! i measured my arm first because it has stayed the same even when i put 20 on after quiting smoking. (no disappointment i guess.) and i had to do it 3 times i lost a half an inch!! :carrot: then i kept going the scale said i lost 6 pounds but i lost 9.5 inches!! :carrot: in 2 weeks i still haven't put my (to small) fat paints on yet. i guess i am a little nervice about it yet.

because my cravings haven't gone away and i am sure its from cheating i am going to stay 1 more week or 1/2 a week on phase 1 playing it by ear.

what does everyone else think?

bnn, Congratulations! I think you are doing fantastic, you have figured out how to enjoy eating out while staying OP, and that's great. As you know, you do have to be careful about hidden sugars and fats, but your choices have been excellent. Keep it up, and you'll be at your goal in no time!

junebug, Woohoo! You're doing fantastic, too! I think it's a good idea to stay on Phase 1 for at least a few more days to get rid of those cravings. Make sure you are very careful about what you are eating, if you are staying true to plan you shouldn't have cravings at all. Try eating more beans and dairy, and those cravings will be completely gone before you know it.

Thanksgiving holiday was not easy for me. I did not gorge but I did fall off-plan for the whole weekend. I am now starting back on phase 1 for another week to get rid of these extra lbs. How many of us did well this weekend? It was very hard!!

I wanna be back on the beach!!! ugh -- though I won't be eating peppers for a long time. Not being able to eat anything but severely overcooked veggies and processes crapola is killing me.

I see the Dr. tomorrow. I am hoping to RESTART (ugh) Phase 1 at some point. I hope to get good news tomorrow -- like "you can now eat a salad!"

how are the rest of you? Did turkey day (for the US folk) kill the last few days of Phase 1?

still feeling like, well, crap. heh.

I did get on some meds and saw the dr. tues. He said once the pills kick in and my (TMI) bowels get back to normal, I can go back to the beach! Never thought I'd crave a salad!

They don't know what set off the IC but I can go back to eating a "regular" diet soon. I will be on meds for 3 months, then another colonoscopy. I go back to work Monday.

Jenn, that's such great news!!! :dancer: I'm so glad that they're going to let you do a "normal diet."
