Is anyone else here fixated on getting really nice, sexy, visible abs?

I think it would be a pretty neat idea to get some chicks wanting abs together. We can post exercise/diet tips, discuss ways to reduce %body fat, give each other support, and brag about (and show off) our victories!

So, if you're interested, introduce yourself and post your goals along with how you're going to get there (if possible). :)

I'll start.

Hi. I'm Aidyn  I hit my goal weight recently (pics and story in sig if you're curious) and am now getting told increasingly that I look slim and slender, but I'm dissatisfied with my body because it's definitely not what I would call bikini ready due to a combination of cellulite and loose skin on my lower stomach. I really want to be rid of the cellulite by this summer, even if the loose skin will stay a little longer (hopefully not forever - since I am 21 years old, I have a chance of it snapping back with time).

I'm trying to kick my diet up a notch by eating at least 40% protein, no more than 30% fat, and 30%ish give or take of carbs. I still eat refined sugars and starches, though I am trying to eat less since I heard they hinder ab progress.

Other things? I'm into music, acting, writing, rock shows, bars (even though I rarely drink anymore ), computers, fitness, and being social. I live in a boring college town with my girlfriend of 2.5 years. I'm always laughing and cracking jokes, despite the fact that I rarely smile in pictures because I think my picture smile is fake and forced. I did some modeling in the past and plan to do it again once my body is bikini ready.

So, uh, anyone else? :D

What about if we have a muffin top or just want to slenderize a soft torso?

Same principles, yes?

I could certainly use a kick-in-the-pants type accountability thread.

Let me think on some goals. I'll get back to ya.

Absolutely, Susan - it all goes along the same lines... losing ab flab, building muscle, looking better in your clothes... Post here any time! :D

I'm game. And, since you said we could show off, I even have a picture, thanks to Meg's thread "from muffin tops to six-packs." (See here: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126818).

Here's one I took this morning. Sorry about the goofy angle -- it's hard to take pictures of your own abs, at least if your camera doesn't have a timer and it's too dark to take a picture in the mirror sans flash.

I'm getting there!

Holy cow, Kim! You're not "getting there" ... you ARE there!!! Wow!!

Ooops, sorry. Judging by the pictures, I've come to the wrong place

Is there a beginners section here somewhere?

I know ... time, effort and the dreaded perserverance.

On a more optimistic note ... I had a protein shake for brkfst. First one I've had in ages.

Oh yes, I'm supposed to have a plan.
Today ... 126 lbs. 28" waist. 25.2% body fat

I'm going to muddle through a couple of days seeing how much protein I'm getting fairly easily and work from there. Under my chiropractors tutelage, I'm not lifting until at least Monday. But I can sweat without kinking my neck.

I plan to see progress within the first two weeks.

Susan: Of course you're not in the wrong place. You're such a positive influence wherever you post, any new forum is lucky to have you!

As for the protein question, I don't worry about hitting 1 g/lb of bodyweight. In order to do this and still stay within my target calories, I'd have to limit my fruit intake, and I lurvvv fruit, especially apples. (That's why I like fall. Leaves, schmeaves: it's all about the apples!)

I do try to eat protein with every meal, and "on plan" for me is 100g of protein per day, give or take. To get there I usually have a protein shake, but only because this is an easy and convenient way (whey? ha ha ha) to get a goodly amount of protein without adding many non-protein calories. It's not a majik bullit, by any means.

OHMYGAWSH, KIM!!! you are SOOOO there. Girrrrl, you have an EIGHT pack!! I didn't know it was POSSIBLE for women to get abs like that without being some kind of professional bodybuilder... you look AMAZING!

Susan, I'm a beginner at this whole 6 pack abs thing, too!

I bought whey protein today in hopes that it will help me get better abs. And yes, Susan, I heard they take time, too ;)

Here are a couple pictures of my... errrr... work in progress. I can't say I didn't warn you about the cellulite and loose skin  Click the pics to enlarge, if you dare.

Ok... goals.

Right now, I'm 135 lbs (content with this weight for now), have a 28" waist, and something like a two pack.

I want a 4-6 pack. I'm not looking to get SUPER ripped; I just want nice abdominal definition with no visible or pinch-able fat. I want to keep my soft, feminine curves (T&A:D) and have no intentions on getting a female bodybuilder-veins-popping-out-you-can-see-every-single-muscle type body - just a lean, fit, and reasonably firm one. Those of you who DO have the aforementioned body are highly commended by me... it takes SO much dedication, determination, hard training and clean eating to get a body like that, so congrats, girls!! I don't think it's "disgusting" and I do not have any bias against the super-hardcore-UBERmuscular-bodybuilder-type body -- I just don't want one for myself.

Does anyone know who Jackie Warner from Work Out is? She's my inspiration, as she is prety much exactly what I want my body to look like. One exception, though: my boobs are and will be much bigger  :

Ya, this is what I've been working towards myself. Well, I should say aspiring too. I know that amazing abs are mostly in the diet and low body fat and I KNOW what I should and shouldn't be eating to get them...I just can't seem to consistently eat clean. Maybe if I work together with you guys it will make me more accountable.

I don't know that a 4 or 6 pack is necessarily my goal..I don't like math and don't want to count my packs...ROFL...I do know I want it FIRM, not giggly and I want my entire midsection leaner and smaller overall. I'd like to have a 23" or 24" waist that is solid. If I get a 4-6 pack out of the deal great, if not, no biggy, maybe at that point I'd decide to take it further.

Shane, Oxygen has a really super good special edition dedicated entirely to the abs. It's super informative and I highly recommend it. Now, if I could just make myself actually DO the stuff it says too, I'd be doing well.

And Kim may I say...HOLY RIPPED ABS BATMAN!!! WHOA!!! You rock!!!!

I'll attach a goal pic and a current pic. Ugh, can't believe how embarrassing the current is. Yuck...talk about flab. Definitely makes me not want to eat anything bad today, that's for sure!!

I'm currently 114lbs (yes, I've gained since I updated my ticker and profile :o) and have a 27.5" waist. Not sure what my body fat is, anyone know a good online calculator that's fairly accurate?

NightengaleShane
11-11-2007, 09:03 AM
Goinforthegold, I am the same way... I KNOW I need to eat VERY clean to have nice abs, and I just slip up so often! I exercise a lot, but my diet still needs improvement.

Your stomach is NOT yucky! I see the definition forming and I can tell that it is pretty firm. You're definitely on your way. And don't be embarrassed about posting it, ****, I posted mine and mine isn't looking as fab as, say, Kim or Jackie Warner yet either! ;)

I really like the goal abs picture you posted, because she still has breasts ( I hope they are natural!) and a well-defined waist; two things I have and hope to keep once I get my nice abs - ever noticed how a lot of fitness professionals practically lose their breasts while reducing their % body fat until they get implants? I know it makes sense, as breasts are FAT, too, but I'm going to try my best to make sure that does NOT happen!

I want a 24" waist, too, but I don't know if that is possible on my body structure (I'm sort of big boned, like for real). I'll settle for a 25" or 26" as long as I have nice abs, of course. ;)

Oh honeys, I dunno about a picture. This is a 3-csection-47-year-old torso!
I'll think about that tomorrow when I'm home alone with the camera.

I'm trying out dailyplate.com so I'm stumbling and fiddling with percentages. I think I'm eating too much although yesterday I did do a good job of protein. And I seem to have an overall calorie deficit.
The protein shake really made a difference to my hunger throughout the day thing.
I'm toying with the idea of sandwiches which can be BFL-ish if I'm careful ... and they're portable.

goinforthegold
11-11-2007, 01:47 PM
Ya Shane, I doubt they're real...they look a little too perfect and perky...though it's hard to see since there's not much showing in the pic.

I'm not sure if my waist size goal is realistic either b/c although I'm so little, I have NO curves or defined waist at all...I'm shaped more like a boy than anything. So, we'll see. First I have to stop eating so much crap and start eating clean...ALL THE TIME.

So should we post progress pics ...maybe every two weeks?? That might keep me motivated.

And Susan, if I got the nerve to post my 33 yr old stretch mark covered post-baby belly, (and directly beside my goal photo mind you just for a little extra humiliation :lol3:) you can too.

I may as well come clean with a little confession too...I was sucking in the stupid thing in the picture. :o:o Do I get disqualified now? :lol3::lol3::lol3:

NightengaleShane
11-11-2007, 02:00 PM
Yah, progress pics every 2 weeks sounds like a GREAT idea! :D

Susan, you don't have to post a pic if you don't want to... but I promise no one will be mean if you do ;)

goinforthegold - nah, you're not disqualified  In one of the pics I took, I might have been able to get a slight bit of a slimming effect because I was holding the camera away from my stomach (to take a picture), so my body was naturally stretched a little. AND even if you ARE sucking in, you STILL have a little bit of definition, which I sure as **** didn't have a few months ago even if I DID suck in.

As for the breasts, I agree... but some people really do have large, perky, real boobs.

If you weren't looking for progress pics, I'd join you ;) I'm pretty sure the flash would cause any pictures of my bare skin to show as glowing white.

I was so excited the other day when I saw my honest-to-god waist in the mirror so I am a beginner, too. I've at least graduated from a keg to being within reach of a six-pack.

I do not "do" sunlight so a bikini goal is out, but I want to have a nice, tight stomach for some serioulsy sexy lingerie. I have a honeymoon coming up soon!

What exercises are you guys doing?!?

NightengaleShane
11-11-2007, 04:03 PM
Lafayette, you don't NEED progress pics; it's all optional. Join join join! :D

Congrats on finding a waist. The biggest and most difficult steps to finding your abs is just removing the layer of fat. Now that you have accomplished that, yup, abs are within your reach! :) When is your honeymoon?

April 2008- one week in Paris and one week in Dublin, so no risk of bare skin in public. I'm sure the French restaurants and Irish pubs will jack up my previous good deeds! We decided there is a certain logic to visiting the place where PDA is perfectly acceptable and the place where staying consistently drunk for days is acceptable. Yes, as a matter of fact, my fiance and I are well matched ;)

I just ate a whole bag of Birdeye Steam in the Bag brussels sprouts so I'm delaying my gym time while that settles. I can't believe I just used veggies as an excuse...

Your before and after pics look great! What ever happened to your radio show?

Thinking about pictures, I did a bit of posing in the bathroom this morning. If I stretch and suck it in ... I am hollow under my ribs. I wonder if this means I have very little muscle mass in my abdomen.
I do realise that setting your abs is different from sucking them in but ... any ideas?
I wonder if the chiropractor can help me with that notion. I'll let you know if he has any words of wisdom.

srmb60
11-12-2007, 10:17 AM
I'm going to send you off to have a peek at the anatomy of your abdomen, here :
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/abs.htm

And then I'll try to explain what the chiropractor explained to me. Since I'm not sure that a chiropractor is the same thing world-wide, I'll make a sidenote here that Dr Tom has a subspecialty in sports kinesiology. He's semiretired ... the reason we are sooo blessed to have him in our small town.

We struggled a little wrt his understanding what I meant. He came to the conclusion that I wanted to know if my abs were ... normal, healthy, there at all ;) and/or workable.

He had me lay on my back with my left leg raised with my right hand on that knee ... like a bent leg raise sorta. Tuck your chin but it doesn't need to be right on your chest.

With my left hand, he helped me search for integrity at the origin and insertion of the rectus abdominus (common spots for weak spots and hernias). No lumps, no bumps, no deep, weak hollows.
We checked for symmetry. Asymmetry can indicate weak spots too.

His tip for before and after pictures was to set, not suck in.

He likes leg lifts.
Either start with your feet on a stool no lower than 18 inches -or- start from the top and lower your legs.
Plant your lumbar spine! If it lifts even a smidge ... ease off!
Set your abs before you use them.
Tuck your chin.
Gracefully, slowly and hold.
Quivering is fine. When it starts, ease off slightly and try again.

Bent knees are fine. A fairly shallow arc from your highest to your lowest is fine too. From flat on the floor to straight up is very advance and dangerous for old backs like mine.
If I could achieve a nice comfortable lift, he said I could do some oblique curls ... if ... I could maintain the chin tuck and lumbar spine plant.

And ... lest we forget ... I have to get rid of some fat that's covering those abs.

For what it's worth ... there's my babble of the day.

Lafayette
11-12-2007, 10:40 AM
I would try that right now Susan, but I'm at work... busy day obviously. ;)

My physical therapist friend (I recently had major abdominal surgery and have gotten all sorts of advice, both solicited and unsolicited) also pushes for lower back strengthening to counter-balance the abdominal area. He told me that the big push for great abs has caused an increase in lower back problems.

I have visions of an embarrassed employee being summoned to her bosses office after a report that she was lying on the floor of her office. She tried to explain "Well you see there are these three fat chicks. Oh and I'm sorry about the skirt ... er ... I have some ... um ... loser friends who ... or ... it's really important to have integrity and symmetry in your abdominus rectus ... oh never mind. It won't happen again."

goinforthegold
11-12-2007, 01:14 PM
Ok, dumb question alert! How do you "set" your abs?

I'm not really doing a lot of ab exercises yet b/c I still have a lot of fat on my stomach that needs to go before I'd even see the muscles anyway. I'm still working really hard on cardio to rid myself of the fat, working on overall body conditioning, including lots of core work and finally...which has actually been the hardest, I'm EATING CLEAN!

I'll have to work on that pose you described Susan, maybe I really have a 6 pack I'm just not standing right when I look at them. ROFL

Lafayette
11-12-2007, 02:27 PM
I think it's just a matter of holding your stomach muscles taut, not sucking them in, with your back straight, your shoulders squared and your head up. I'm am a champion sloucher and I look 10 pounds thinner if I just use good posture.

My boss would be laughing, too. I'm not sure how the rest of the office woudl view it, though! Then again, I've probably done worse...

srmb60
11-12-2007, 03:30 PM
I think I learned the set thing from one of those SpecialK pilates DVD's. It's hard to explain. If you lay on your back with your knees up and lower back pressed into the floor ... you should be able to feel that your abs are taut. It's waaay harder when you're standing up. Try placing your hand on your belly and pressing your abs against it ... pushing out, sort of gently.

I have a friend who is a physiotherapist too. His bugaboo about lifting is folks who bulk up all the front stuff you can see and ignore the backs. A recipe for injury! Just like Lafayette's friend has found.

NightengaleShane

Lafayette - sounds like you will have an awesome time on your honeymoon! :D French restaurants actually serve much smaller portions than American ones do, though the Irish pubs will definitely do you in ;) but pssssht, it's a HONEYMOON... forget dieting for a few seconds!

As for my radio show, my friend flaked out on me. I was pretty upset, but that's another story. OH, and thank you for the compliment on my before/after pics :D

You are also right about posture! Great posture can subtract ten pounds for sure!

SusanB, that is interesting about your chiropractor. Leg lifts *are* a good idea, by the way. All the abs-i-fied fitness people I know highly recommend them.

However, I've come to the conclusion that a clean diet high in protein may be the most important thing when it comes to abs development... well... for the ones who aren't so lucky ;) I see these college guys with 6 packs and they eat CRAP like pizza and beer... all they do is go to the gym... but once they get older, that 6 pack will turn into a keg if they don't change their eating habits! Ha... BUT... most WOMEN I know with abs DO actually work very hard for them.

srmb60

Morning!
Abs are made in the kitchen, yup, I've heard that before.
I've done some reading around the internet ... personal pages of fitness models et al ... quite a few of them say they never specifically do abs. But I have never been in good shape so I think my core can use the help. Besides that ... abs are a big muscle group that uses lots of calories.
I need them to use the popcorn I ate last night ;)

Lafayette
11-13-2007, 02:29 PM
I did ab exercises last night (which included loading and unloading the dishwasher!) and checked the mirror this morning. I know, it's too early to tell! As long as brandy cream sauce is protein, I should fare well in Paris ;)

I had two days in a row of EATING CLEAN!! YAY ME!! My only problem now is I'm not eating enough. ARGH.

I'm still not really sure that I understand the difference between holding them taut and sucking them in b/c what I do when "sucking in" is hold them taut...but they automatically go in when I do that, so wouldn't it be sucking in? I mean I'm not really "sucking" them I guess, it's more tightening the muscles...or maybe a little of both. I don't know, I'll have to practice the description you gave Susan. I'll practice it until I don't have to anymore. *grin*

goinforthegold - when you "eat clean" you really can feel like you ate a lot more even if you are not meeting your daily caloric requirements. Yesterday, I didn't eat enough calories either (1,126 - I was close to the mandatory 1,200, but didn't quite make it) and today, I've been eating every 2-3 hours, so I feel like I''m constantly eating, BUT I'll only be having 1,400ish by the end. At this rate, I might even get back into losing mode. I'm not trying to lose intentionally anymore, but if a little more comes off, GREAT! :) That's an AWESOME benefit of eating clean, though... getting to eat A LOT more for the same amount of calories. HA, well, when I get a chance, I am now going to have to "set" my abs and take new, more flattering pictures  I did make a point not to slouch (if you stand up straight and tall, you look thinner, I think) so perhaps I was already halfway "set"? ;)

As for this: "But I dunno ... my abs are considerably older than them gals." <----do you have a lot of loose skin? I know loose skin does not snap back as readily as you get older, so that's why I ask. Look at kaw for inspiration - she's closer to your age and has nicer abs than ANY of us :)

OMG, I lol'd at that...tastes like butt...*rofl* ewwwwww.... I've been taking a whey supplement too, I just ran out today actually, gotta get more tomorrow. Can't remember what the brand was but it most definitely did NOT taste like butt. I got the vanilla milkshake flavour instead, it wasn't great but not too bad. I'll be sure to avoid the butt flavoured ones when I get more. I'm also going to get a casein supplement or a blend maybe to take just before bedtime.

Great job on the eating and biking! I was biking last week but the gears on my bike are busted now somehow and my dh is er...kinda useless so they haven't gotten fixed yet.

Thanks for the links. And yes, my calories have been WAY, WAY down too the past two or three days which worries me b/c I don't want to be cannabalizing my lean tissue, what little of it I have. I don't even think I hit 1000 today. I'm just struggling with increasing it without binging. Hopefully it will get easier for me. The problem is the more I eat, the more I want to eat. So the thought of eating mroe scares the daylights out of me. Plus, like you said, it feels like I'm eating a lot already.

I'm wondering the same thing, how much of my rolls is loose skin and how much is fat. I'm hoping it's all fat so that it will eventually go away...but I'm like you, just whittle it away and see what happens. It's kind of exciting not knowing what I'm going to unveil as I lose more. :D

I made my Thanksgiving weight goal this morning! 145! I'm very small boned so I'm still looking pretty lumpy but not anywhere near as bad as when I started. The mirror check has not yet yielded results. Crunch! Maybe 140 will help? I, too, can't wait to see what lies beneath ;)

Shane- my friends and I took a vegetarian cooking class last winter. My friend James kindly thanked the teacher for "some great chicken recipes." I converted to soy milk but I was too grossed out at the water conservation/bleach is bad for the environment (I thought that was the point) approach to cleaning the kitchen at the nature center where the class was held. For the record, I am not eating BUTT, no matter how badly I want to see my abs. A meal of tofu cooked in a nasty kitchen was my limit.

Day 3 of clean eating for me... I can only focus on this thing one day at a time, really. But thoughts like, "I can't WAIT to look good in almost ANYTHING!," "I can't WAIT for that photo shoot!," "I can't WAIT to show off my HOT BOD at the beach," and "I can't WAIT to FINALLY be REALLY fit and as healthy as possible!" really keep me going.

Rock on Susan, good job - that sounds very clean and high in protein! :) Cardio is great for getting better abs, since diminishing that layer of fat is the first step towards great abs anyway.

 Lafayette @ "For the record, I am not eating BUTT, no matter how badly I want to see my abs." I'll do whatever I can do... this BUTT stuff has a lot of protein in it! ;) I just close my eyes and eat the butt powder! 145? Awesome. How tall are you?
I've always thought small boned people were lucky, in the fact that they have the potential of truly looking slender. I'm medium-large myself, so I'll never have that opportunity. However, I guess it's a two-sided coin, since small boned people have to weigh less to achieve that slender look and properly fill out their bone structure. Nobody wins, eh?

BTW, as someone who is currently at your goal weight (and I remember what I looked like at 145), you will actually see a potentially surprising difference. Check this out:

http://www.custom-international.com/weightloss/14.jpg http://www.custom-international.com/weightloss/13.jpg

I'm not sure if you can tell, but my waist is better defined at 135. It's not the most obvious thing in the world, as by the time I hit 145, most of my non-abdominal fat was gone.

goinforthegold - if that icon pic is you, then you have PLENTY of lean tissue :) if it's not... uhhhh.... well... I feel stupid :o You need to start remembering the brand and let me know, because I'd love a whey supplement that isn't butt flavored. ;)

I think you look better in the second pic Shane, more curves. I'm jealous. lol Though, it could just be the clothes, the shirt in the second pic is more form fitting. Course, you look awesome in both of them! I never would have guessed there was 10lbs in the difference between the two pics.

Yes, the avatar picture is me...but my back is my best side. I know, I'm a freak of nature. LOL It's just that you can't see my flabby belly from the back and for some reason from behind I actually have curves defining my waist, from the front I don't. I honestly don't understand how that's possible but again, I'm definitely a freak. *sigh* Oh, and plus the picture was taken by a professional with some very creative lighting and that works WONDERS. *rofl*

Ok Shane, the non-butt protein powder is by PVL (http://www.pvldirect.com/products_whey_gourmet.html). I got mine at Walmart but I've also seen it at GNC. The last time I had the Vanilla Ice Cream Royalle...it did NOT taste like Vanilla ice cream at all...lol, but it also didn't taste like butt. It was tolerable. Today I got the chocolate flavoured one and it's not as good as the vanilla I don't think, nor is it really very chocolatey but it also does not taste like butt. ;) It's tolerable. It doesn't seem to mix up quite as nicely as the vanilla one did but no biggy.

I also got some muscle milk today, I'll let you know how butt-like that tastes tomorrow when I try it. :D

Hi everyone! I know I'm a bit late but would LOVE to join. I'm super close to my goal weight which is to maintain between 160 and 165, the past week or so I've been bouncing around between 168 and 170. This I believe will give me the kick in the butt I need to finish what I've started. I'll take some current pictures tomorrow and post them with my measurements.

Hi Melissa! There is no late. I, for one, will probably be at this for a while :o

Last evening I took DS#2 up to his (moved back home and into) room. I had him clear off my weightbench and I actually used it.

I'd had a terrible day at work, complete with the nagging headache and second guessing and re-mulling. By 7 pm I had to do something!

I have dumbells downstairs but they just didn't seem like enough, ya know?

I sweated, grunted and put 'my mind in my muscle' and it felt awesome! I slept amazingly well and this is the first morning in 8 days that I haven't been wakened by that annoying kink in my neck.

... I forgot to weigh myself. Better go back in this thread and see what a weekly recheck would be.

NSV!! Ok... so... I have this pair of pants... Silver jeans size 27 "rock star fit" = very tight. I bought them back when I weighed around 125, but they were always uncomfortably tight until I stretched them out a bit. Today, I put on these pants, stretch free and no wear for two years  ...and they fit beautifully. "Wow," I thought to myself, "I don't know if I've EVER been THIS slim without eating disorders!"
Now, that motivates me to eat clean for another day!

:welcome: Melissa! Nope , never too late to join! Judging from your sig pic, you're pretty, btw

 goinforthegold, I wrote down the name of the non butt substance so I can try it! And I'll let you know if I think it tastes like butt! Oh, how cute, they have flavors like "creamy caramel pie" and "creamy dreamy milk chocolate"

The second pic is me at 135, so thank you! The difference between 135 and 145 was more noticeable in my clothes than it was visibly, if that makes any sense... like... by the time I hit 145, everyone acknowledged that I lost a whole slew of weight, and now people are not acknowledging it as much except to say things like, "Are you still losing weight?"
"You've gotten so thin."
and...
"ARE YOU EATING?!"
and yes, I agree that your back is amazing. your abs are not bad either... you are criticising yourself WAYYY too much, when you have better abs than most American women. :)
BTW... PVL... I read it wrong at first and thought it said VPL :p and I started giggling like a middle school girl.

Yay, Susan, for using your weight bench :D it must be nice to have that in your home... I only grunt while weightlifting at the fitness center if no one else is around  I get embarrassed! :o

What exercises are you doing? I've been working my way into the double digits with crunches (go ahead, laugh!) and I have an appointment at Curves next Monday night to get my post-surgery buns off the coach.

Shane- I think having a larger chest (34D-36DD depending on my weight) is the main factor in concealing the extra pounds, not bone structure. I'm 5'4" so, yes, I look top-heavy ;) Way to go on the pants!

What exercises is... who? Me? Everyone?
I do these:
http://exercise.about.com/od/abs/ss/abexercises.htm

I ride my bike to and from work every day which equates to 18 miles, run during each of my 15-minute work breaks, weight train (basic hand weight stuff every day and the gym twice a week to do heavy weights... I know I should do it more - maybe every other day - but I really do not have time), and run up and down stairs for 30 minutes a few times a week. I run extra when I feel like it and often go for distance runs on the weekend.

Oh... I have a lot of weekend exercise time since my weekend lasts 3 days.

I have a large chest, too, but you have me beat, miss DD. Mine are 36D's, albeit small D's... not exactly tiny ;) nothing wrong with a huge set of knockers!

WOOHOO!! Nice job on the jeans! :carrot::carrot: And it's funny that you posted about that today b/c I got into a pair of jeans today for the first time too. This summer I couldn't get them past my hips and today they were actually comfy!

The creamy dreamy chocolate isn't exactly creamy and dreamy...*LOL* but it's not really that bad. I've only ever tried the vanilla and chocolate.

VPL Protein Shake? *rofl* And I know, I'm too hard on myself...I'm working on it. :( I guess from being fat for so long, I still see fat.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Today I was a little pressed on time so only did a few mat ab exercises. When I ran I also tried to contract my abs so that added a little more work for my tummy today. I attached pictures of me at 178 (white shorts), I took the other one like 5 mintues ago and this morning I was 170. goinforthegold - it is natural to be hard on yourself... I am hard on myself as well. I think parts of me (especially my stomach) look absolutely HIDEOUS and I still actually think I look like someone who has a lot of weight to lose even though I KNOW innately that it can't be true. haha.

Ok, Bikini Ready, I really REALLY envy the fact that you do not have cellulite AT ALL on your stomach :D (I have all this yucky loose skin + cellulite combo that makes me absolutely nausious :barf:) - lookin' good, girl! :)

Susan, your stomach looks great for being 47 and having C-sections. Definitely flat. Your arms have decent definition, too!

My digital camera is broken (haha)! I have a lateral incision from major abdominal surgery in mid-August so let's just agree that it's not appetizing and work from there, shall we? To top it off, I was allergic to the surgi-strips used to hold the incision together so I have a long line with huge polka dots on each side of it that are healed but still discolored. There, you've got more of a picture than you ever wanted!

I'm excited to get back on a machine they have at Curves. I have no idea what it's called but it forces you to twist at the waist with some resistance. They tell me this will give me an honest-to-god waist, which I have never had. I'll try anything!

I messed up yesterday but still got my 100g protein. See, the girlfriend brought home some baked goods - one brownie (very small, though!), one slice of carrot cake (also small/sliver-like) and one medium-sized slice of coconut cake. Umm... I ate it all :o

Today is a new day and I am going to go off to the gym in a little bit to do some weight lifting. So far, I've eaten clean, and I'm not going to let anything else mess me up!

goinforthegold, I haven't had children but I have loose skin anyway :barf: SO NO, you are NOT alone! :) Most of the weight I gained and lost was on my stomach, and since it came off somewhat quickly, it left some nasty hollow skin. Oh well. I keep hoping it will snap back - I have a couple photographers wanting to do photo shoots with me and I keep putting them off because I hate my stomach

Honestly I think we are all looking pretty good and it will only get better! Like Susan said we are all doing great compared to where we have been in the past.

I am lucky that I don't have loose skin or cellulite on my belly (it's all on my butt and thighs...ugh) most likely due to no childbirths as goinforthegold mentioned and good elasticity.

Nightengaleshane... I feel for you about the little baked goods whoops... my sister took me to ice cream her treat and I didn't hold back... I'm made up for it during my workout this morning, did my ab work in and lots of cardio, maybe later I will do some more crunches or ball stuff.

Oh and I was reading past posts about the protein powders and what not being good or disgusting... I get this wildberry passion protein tea powder in little packets that is delicious... tastes like fruit punch and only has 70 calories (the carbs and sugars are very minimal as well) for 15 grams of protein. All you do is mix it with water, shake it up and you're good to go.

I think your back looks great!! At least you have curves, like a woman should!! *sigh* Why are we always so hard on ourselves? :?:

Oh, oh, on the photo shoot...I have the PERFECT pose for faking an amazing mid section!! Lay upside down on stairs or something else on a decline. Gravity takes everything...but in a good way. When I did the pics for dh last month the guy had me do this and it turned out amazing!! I'll pm you the pic if you aren't sure what I mean. Despite hating parts of me, I actually have my moments where I admire my body, but also ANYTHING is better than the BLOB I was pre-weight-loss ;)

The photographer I'm going to be working with has taken pics of my girlfriend and they've turned out amazing. HOWEVER, my girlfriend is 5'10" and 125 pounds and already has modeling gigs. Hi Ladies, do you mind if I butt in??

You all seem to have the same goals as I do. I am starting my gung-hoe 6 week work out/nutrition plan and wanted to start a challenge thread but would rather do it with some company.

NightengaleShane: I just wanted to say that you have definately made progress since your first ab shot at the start of the thread! I don't want to lose my post by clicking the back button, but it hasn't even been that long has it?? Kudos to you for sticking with this as long as you have.

About loose skin, have you considered body brushing? You know those natural looking long handled brushes that you see in the health food store or in the bath and body section? If you brush your whole body with one of those every morning it will tighten you right up! Not to mention that your skin will get really really soft ( I have people at work come up and rub my arms because they are soo soft) and you wont even need to use soap on it any more. I know it sounds funky but is true....

goinforthegold: what in the heck do you eat, mama? Are you low carb for the most part? I want to ride what ever train you are on! ;)

goinforthegold
11-19-2007, 07:00 PM
LOL, thank you. That's sweet! Actually, I'm about the worst role model for eating that you could find. I did really well the first few months, I wasn't really doing low carb, but I increased my protein from lean sources and only ate good quality complex carbs...but not really a lot of them. Then I spent the past few months binging/starving/binging/starving...etc. *sigh* Now, I'm trying to get my act together again and eat clean without binging and without starving. Lots of protein, lots of veggies, some good fats, and good carbs...I'm not very good at it, but I'm trying. I either too much junk, or not enough of the good stuff. Most of the way I look is due to the consistency of my exercise. As horrid as my nutrition has been I've been working my buns off with running and now weight lifting.

And you're only 121...you must already look great already! I was thrilled when I got down that low and we're the same height. Gonna post some before pics? Don't worry, you don't have to. Feel free to join in, we just got started anyway.

I didn't get my 100g protein in today. Oops :o - I still ate healthy things, with the exception of a couple crunch rolls (sushi - fried on the outside).

I've been doing pretty well lately, though yesterday I had some ice cream - just a few bites of Cold Stone... about 1/3 or 1/4 of a "like it" container. The FAT me would have tried to eat a whole PINT! And I went to On the Border yesterday... and got grilled chicken fresca (basically grilled chicken with a salsa type thing over it, grilled veggies, and Mexican rice). It was great with only 510 calories. :D

kriyakiza, welcome!! Butt in any time! :)
 you can really see a difference in my abs? I thought I could, too, but I brushed it off as wishful thinking. I posted my first abs pic back on November 9th. It was taken around the 5th. So... a couple weeks ago? I'm surprised you noticed. Surprised in a good way, of course :o

I never even heard of body brushing, but thanks for the tip! I'm going to have to hit up a health food store and find me some of that!

As goinforthegold mentioned, you can post some "before" pictures if you're daring enough

It was a spice cake with lemon cream cheese frosting... yummy! The kicker is like an hour ago she stopped by to give me more because I enjoyed it so much... I thanked her like crazy and tossed it the second she left. No way am I doing that much damage in one day (as I and many of us would have had no problem doing in the past).

My biggest issue right now is losing like 5 pounds and gaining it and losing it and regaining and relosing it untill I finally buckle down and lose it plus 5 more and then repeat the process with the newly lost 5 pounds. I would really like to break this cycle because all I have to do to be at my goal it to lose 8 more pounds and then never go above 165 again.

Tomorrow I'll have a somewhat of a cleansing day to get the cake I had today and ice cream I had yesterday out. Foodwise I've been totally ok with, it's those darn desserts that get me. Right now I'm shooting to hit 160 by Christmas, that would be an awesome gift to myself.

I sat up until after one this morning surfing female fitness model sites. Oh the endless possibilities of the human body! Fabulous!

And they come from sooo many backgrounds. I used to think they'd all been gymnasts since the age of three ... but it ain't necessarily so. I wish I could remember which one started out at 210 lbs.

Some are short, some are tall, some are smooth, some are rippled ... I'm going to do that again as soon as I get some housework done today. Right before I do cardio and weights ;)

As goinforthegold said (you are definitely firming up by the way!) I too would be much more productive if I sepnt the time working towards the body I wanted rather then imagining it. I'm on the way though... slowly but still going in the right direction.

Nightengaleshane, way to eat just one! That is very difficult to do at times. By the way your photo shoot sounds like a lot of fun, I did one once and actually got asked to work but they said I would need to travel and I couldn't do it at the time cause of school and work. Good luck with it. I'm somewhat of a nutrition consultant/trainer now, it's a lot of fun and rewarding to help people succeed, I'm sure you will love it.

I remember now why I'm a bit superstitious about working out well before I work 3-11. Hokey Mickey my butt was draggin by midnight!
And hungry! 2200 cals and I woke up this morning because my stomach was growling. Mine ... my stomach growling! That doesn't happen very often.

Hi, guys!

I made the mistake of running a huge list or errands the other day during lunch and swinging through McDonald's for a quick Happy Meal. Honestly, I was starving the rest of the day and ate too much at dinner. Ronald is out to get me! Bad choice!

In the midst of my ab-blasting workouts, I managed to catch a vicious head cold that has settled in my chest. My diet consists of Robitussin and chicken soup right now... I hate cold weather!

Hello all,

Been away for a while and am still catching up, but I just wanted to say, "way to go, guys!" It's absolutely wonderful to see the group thriving, and the waistlines shrinking. Let's keep it up through the holiday season, eh?

Booh-yeah. (No, I don't really know what that means, but I like the way it sounds.)

Where to begin ... you see I'm having a lightbulb moment but it's one of those fluorescent bulbs that comes to life sloowwly ...

I can't eat 1200 calories any more. I'm either starving and eat waaay too much the next day or I'm so tired and listless, I nap every day. I certainly cannot work and exercise too!

In the last maybe three days I've come across references to Tom Venuto's Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle about a gajillion times.

I've done two days of a three day split and loved every minute of it.

On several occassions yesterday and today, I've been honestly grumbling tummy hungry.

A phrase something like ... if you want to gain muscle and become lean, you're going to have to eat ... has popped up in each magazine and about 80% of the websites I've been to lately.

My own signature used to say eat clean.

Even those French Women books ... eat nice bits of awesome foods.

Barbara (one of my favourites) is talking about adding in healthy calories.

The inspirationally successful Kim popped in here.

Do you see this coming together?

I'm too light to lose weight by eating 1200 cals and walking to the post office!

I don't need to get lighter, I need to get slimmer.

Muscle is slimmer.

If I'm going to build muscle, I need to eat!

If I'm going to eat ... it'd better be good food!

I've got past the point where it's all about 'eat less and move more'. I need to learn how to build the body I want (outta these raw materials HA!)

Boing! I think the bulb is fully lit now. Overshadowed only by the fact that I knew all this before sigh. But today it's all just fallen into place in my head.

Yes, I'm excited. Yes, I'm rambling. Did that even make sense?

I messed up yesterday and ate a slice of cheesecake with cherries on it! :o I LOVE cheesecake. It's one of my trigger foods and it's in my house. :( oh well. I'm NOT going to eat any more of it. Damn. This is going to be hard!

As some of you may know, I'm pretty much spending Thanksgiving alone. That's ok, because tomorrow my girlfriend is coming home with Thanksgiving dinner - turkey, arroz con dules (I don't know how it's spelled, but it's a big Puerto Rican Thanksgiving thing), mashed potatoes, candied yams, stuffing... :hungry: I'll eat my fair share of TURKEY and eat small portions of everything else! :D (Perhaps that is a good bit of advice for everyone here in the states?)

Susan, AMEN! :) You are so right! And it makes perfect sense... you're not rambling; you've come to a very important realization.

Lafayette - A cold? BLEGH! I hope you feel better soon. You know, the only time I will even eat chicken soup is when sick... any other time, it just reminds me of being sick and makes me go "eugh". Same with ginger ale. And I have an aversion to orange juice because I drink it when my blood sugar gets low, so any other time I'm offered it, all I can think of it sugar crashes which also makes me go "eugh"

Now, if only I could associate things like cheesecake, chips, and trail mix ( yeah yeah I know it's supposed to be healthy but NOT in the quantities I eat it!) with something really, really unpleasant... if I could, I'd probably have a really nice body by now ;)

At any rate, feel better! And yes, Ronald McDonald is EVIL... he's a CLOWN, for :censored:'s sake! :)

I bet that made you feel really good, Susan :D!

I messed up yesterday... a lot. I ate WAY more cheesecake than any human being is supposed to. Oh well... today is a new day!

I'm about to go black Friday shopping today, so I'm popping in to say hi at the asscrack of dawn. I'm supposed to be Christmas shopping, but maybe I'll buy something for myself, too, since I hardly ever do.

I too ate way more pie and whipped cream that anyone should be allowed. I felt a little sickly stuffed all night... then had another piece this morning... Why don't I learn my lesson? Since we cooked at my house we gave away all the leftovers but the turkey so at least I can't do any more damage. I will be doing damage control for the next few days, I don't even want to look at the scale for like a week!

GOOD morning!

How'd everyone do on Thanksgiving?

Me? I messed up big time :o I ate flan, cheesecake, pumpkin pie, and of course all the normal Turkey Day favorites. I've been kind of lazy and not exercising as much as I normally do, too, so today I'm fixing all this by starting the day right: drinking a protein shake and going to the gym! YAY! I haven't gained any weight, though, which is good, considering I feel like I've been the BIGGEST PIG the last few days.

Susan, I bet right now you're happy you're not in the states, eh? Thanksgiving was just another Thursday for you ;)

Ok...It's never going to happen for me. I have great obliques and a sort of a 4-pack, however after years of obesity and pregnancy, a c-section and a myomectomy my tummy is a bit saggy. Not horrible. I have lost 16 inches from my waist, and I have firm muscles I can feel them. You just can't see them very clearly because of the excess skin. So unless I get some plastic surgeon to take mercy on me, I won't be joining in on this challenge. :) Thanks though. :)

Libby, as I've said before, everyone who wants to improve their abs is welcome and picture posting is optional :) And a 4 pack is great!

As for plastic surgeons, I heard that you can write Oprah about your excess skin and then potentially get her to pay for your surgery. Of course, they will have to film you every step of the way, but I guess that is a small price to pay if you want it bad enough ;)

Melissa. Here you go: :kickbutt: and a :coach: for good measure!

I've been playing around with a new ab exercise, Roman chair sit-ups. See here (http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/HipFlexors/WtRomanChairSitup.html) for a discussion and short clip. They're a compound exercise for your core: they work abs, hip flexors, and, it feels like, lower back. Fun fun!

Warning: these can kick your butt, so start w/out added weight. I haven't gotten stuck, but I can see how one could. It's probably a good idea to have a spotter the first time you try these.

I suppose you could also do these with a twist to work the obliques. I don't bother doing isolation oblique work, though.

Be strong,
Kim

I probably need one, too. I've been eating CRAP the last few days. I'll do well until the evening, and then I'll either huff down FRIED or CARBILICIOUS things. The scale went up a pound today, but I'm pretty sure it will go down... it always does. ;)

Just popping in to say hello and see how everyone's doing. Any new progress pics?

I was thinking about taking another one but don't think there's much change from last week. ALTHOUGH, I just started a new training program that I'm super excited about. I hired an online personal trainer for 2 months complete with nutrition plan and everything. It's been two days and so far I'm doing well. She said NO CHEATING AT ALL for at least 21 days. *ack!* 2 days down (almost), 19 to go. *rofl*

Meanwhile...a 23" waist!! OMG! You do realize that's my DREAM right? You rock!

NightengaleShane
11-27-2007, 11:13 AM
Question... when ya'll measure around your waist, do you measure the top part or do you measure around your belly button right before your hips?

A 23" waist is probably unattainable for me. The thinnest my waist has ever been is 24" and that was while I had NO meat on my bones (hollow stomach, could see all my ribs, etc).

I have a large bone structure. Obviously, this does not hinder me from being slim, as I've never seen a fat skeleton, have you? ;) Still, the smallest my waist is probably going to get is 25" or 26" if I'm measuring it accurately.

NSV! So, my girlfriend has these pants from Express and they're a size THREE. She can't fit them anymore BUT I CAN! I convinced myself that it's probably just because they have a bit of stretch in 'em, though I'm able to fit A LOT of clothes she can no longer wear... 3 reg's and 5 jrs. More than half of them actually fit me comfortably, too, while the others would need to be unbuttoned after a good meal  FYI, I've always considered her skinny and so has pretty much everyone else. Right now, she's wearing 6's, 7's, and 9's. She is 3 inches taller than me and 5 pounds less, though now several people are commenting that we look near the same size.

I don't know how I'm fitting into these tiny sizes when I don't think I'm thin at all! Infact, I think I am a tad bit meaty (although at this point, all that meat is muscle except for what is on my lower stomach).

goinforthegold - no more progress pics until I've MADE progress  I ate my fair share of unhealthy food this week... I need to get back on track!

Thank you for the kick in the pants! So far today has been good, hopefully I'm on a roll. The bloating has reduced too so thats a big plus. I totally understand the evening fat food fest Nightengaleshane, luckily tonight I will be in class from 4-10 so that's quite unlikely to happen.

I've done the Roman chair, it is quite the exercise! I really like it but then again I like all ab exercises. If you flip over on that too it's an awesome glute workout and add some weights and do some shoulders at the same time and OH MAN (my trainer takes no mercy at times)!

As for the waist measurement there are many different ways to do it so who is to say which was is really correct? You can measure at the belly button, 2 inched above it, the smallest part, etc... I think the most important thing is to be consistent.

It's a little vain but I always measure the smallest part (it's the same thing as weighing in the morning after emptying the bladder). Right now my waist is 28'' and I KNOW 23'' would be quite odd looking on me that's for sure, but I also have 41'' birthing hips so my 28'' is already quite small in comaprison. I have issues with the little doughboy fat covering my lower abs and the love handles.

Good luck Goinforthegold on the 19 days you have to go! I'm sure you will be able to do it and imagine how awesome you will feel once you accomplish it!

Well to sum up this novel, everyone have a wonderful healthy happy day!

WOOHOO on the NSV's!! That's awesome!! :carrot::carrot: And I measure the same place Susan does, at the smallest part. Though, I kinda feel like that's cheating b/c the rest of my belly is at least an inch or two bigger. :(

And ya, I don't think I'm doing the progress pics yet...I pigged out all weekend (before starting with the trainer *lol*) and I really don't think there's any change from last time so no need to. Maybe next week...we'll see.:D

Shane, it's a sheer MIRACLE that I have a 23 inch waist. But I also have my height on my side. I'm 5' 1/4 " tall. You're 5' 7"! Your waist will probably end up somewhere between 26 and 28. Nothing wrong with that. I measure right above my belly button. AND...Dr. Oz says you should suck in your belly when you do it, so you are measuring the OMEMTUM fat and not any squishy fat. Which in my case is loose skin. So I'll gladly suck that in. I just measured and unsucked I am 25 inches. So sucking pays in my case! :) Gotta love Dr. Oz.

And the reason you are fitting into tiny sizes, is because you have MUSCLE TONE!!! I went from a size 22 and I can fit into 0 -4's now. Muscle is the reason. If you are fitting into 3's and 5's at 5' 7", you are TINY!!!! But probably really toned. So as long as it doesn't bum your girlfriend out, keep wearing those clothes. A double wardrobe must be a wonderful thing!

I'm with Melissa ... consistency is what counts.

I have sore lower abs this morning and I think it's from doing bent leg lifts while holding a bar over my head (in my instance it was the headboard while watching TV). It's a different pull ... a good one.

NightengaleShane

Ok, my waist is between 27" and 28" when I measure the higher spot and suck it in, and it's 29" around my belly button. I usually wear 28" pants (well, if they are the kind that come that way... Silver, Seven, Lucky etc) so it makes sense. Thanks for the waist measuring tips, girls... and I never knew that you were SUPPOSED to suck it in a little when measuring your waist... that's AWESOME :D

Once I get my abs, I'll probably have a 26" waist, I'm thinking. You know... when I suck in ;)

 me wearing clothes she can't fit is something the GF has yet to get used to... and I think she hates it, so I'll let her have her ill-fitted 5's. ;) As for 3's, I can only fit certain ones... you know... the ones that run big to make girls feel better about themselves... oh, surprisingly enough, I've seen some TALL people with really tiny waistlines. Back to the topic of my girlfriend... she has a smaller waist than I do, so I actually feel that it's warped/almost not right that I can fit clothes that she can't... her waist around 25" and was 24" before she gained a little. The thing is, she gains mostly in her butt and thighs (LUCKY BIATCH! I gain it ALL in my STOMACH! ;))

Seriously, I envy anyone who gains butt/thigh fat as opposed to belly fat. Two people can have the same percent body fat, but the one with butt/thigh fat ALWAYS looks THINNER :(

Yesterday I did ok on my eating. I can do better today. I got carried away with the eeeeevil sourdough bread

Tonight I'm going to eat spaghetti... whole grain spaghetti! YAY!

Lafayette, you stayed away from the PIES? I'm so proud of you. I can't say I did the same;)

Speaking of pumpkin pie, there is now pumpkin pie yogurt (along with eggnog yogurt) at Publix now. It's low fat and quite yummy.

I'm not sure how accurate those heart rate thingies are at the gym. I had one that told me my heart rate was 160 stepping on, then it reduced to 80 and started climbing gradually (as it was supposed to) until it decided to tell me 220! I started freaking out until I realized that there was no way my heart rate could have climbed from 115ish (I had been working out awhile) to 220!

Rotten week! I was off the 17 and 18th and since then will have worked 12 shifts and gone to one training session. I'm averaging just under 6 hours of sleep a day and am draggin' BAD!

I kind of slacked off on exercise the past few days but went to the gym this morning and did some hard core cardio and later I'll do some abs. I had some eggs with cheese for breakfast, could have done without the cheese but REALLY wanted it so let myself have it so I don't feel deprived and binge on it later or something which I'm known to do. I feel like a salad too so I'll make one later which will make up for the cheese fat and calories so it will all even out in the end. Everyone enjoy the weekend!

I went to a Chinese buffet a couple days ago :o I got two plates and barely ate half of each one (I like variety, so I got something of everything, took a few bites, and left the rest behind). Despite feeling like I messed up, I know the FAT me would have done SO much worse.

Yeah, I always like to think about what the FAT me would have done. It makes me feel better. ;)

I'm going to go to the stadium and run up and down the stairs today. I can only do it on weekends, because the university sports teams are practicing every other time. So, stadium stairs today and weight training tomorrow. It just hit me that my photo shoot is in a little over ONE month, so I REALLY need to step my diet game up with eating less refined sugar, less fat, and more protein. I'm always meeting my 100g a day quota and sometimes even getting one gram in for each pound I weigh.

goinforthegold - oh **** yeah it was delicious! you're not going to have any, huh? GO YOU! I should not eat any more spaghetti for the rest of the month. :( *sighs* I love pasta. :(
