Cool pcos, IR, hashimo's disease, all since last week!

Hi,
I am overwhelmed with all of this stuff. I was dx'd with polysystic ovaries in my early 20's, hypertension and bedrest with both pregnancies in addition to massive weight gain both times. In the last 18 months or so, I developed this huge belly that I couldn't lose! I am a fitness professional and am used to upping the cardio and weights, leaning out, carb cycling, what have you, but this was a new one. In addition, the more I tried to lose, I ended up gaining. I am a certified weight loss specialist as well. I actually became like some of my clients, in that every dr's visit, I was telling him I was absolutely following an eating plan for weight loss and I was gaining! To make a long story short, I gained 40 pounds over 18 months time and finally last week was dx'd with pcos, IR and then this week I got the call about my thyroid. I was put on 1500mg of metformin, started it last Thursday and as of yesterday I lost 9 pounds. I suspect that was mostly water but I have noticed a change in my belly. The thyroid situation is going to be monitored every 6 months or so. I always test normal--5? on the regular cascade test, but this time he added the thyroid peroxidase test and it came back abnormal. Anyone else out there using met feel better? The only thing I am happy about right now is that I found out what the problems are and I am anxious to see what will happen.

Hey puffy! I'm so glad to see another fitness person on here! I did my first figure show last fall and started dieting down again for the spring shows earlier this year but just couldn't. The whole insulin resistance thing was freaking me out, I didn't know what was going on and I didn't have a nutritionist I trusted, just advice from some friends in the sport. A naturopath this summer suggested I have pcos and insulin resistance - well, it's been a learning experience ever since! I'm 33 years old and believe I've had pcos since the onset of puberty. I would really like to see how you do on your thyroid meds, I'm going to try the natural route - I just think it's going to be longer before I see improvements this way. The waiting does make me a little crazy. What kind of weight loss plan are you following? Have you been actively competing? I'm assuming your are off-season now, being the time of year.

Always love to talk fitness and comps... hope your still hanging around here!

Puffy, I know when I was diagnosed, it was huge relief in and of itself, because everything started to make sense. Goodluck with your treatments!

Hi again, thanks for replying jenwins and sapphire blue! Jenwins, I actually was trying bodybuilding for the first time last March after many years of teaching traditional aerobics and mind-body classes, I ran my first marathon in 2005 never having run more than 1 or 2 miles until 8 months prior, I decided I needed to try bodybuilding next--it was really convenient too, I had just become a fitness manager for a large chain who shall remain nameless, and I had much feedom to train! However, the IR and thyroid were already at work on my body, and I hadn't recognized the morph from polycystic ovaries into pcos. I had never had such a rough time with training goals. I am 37 and I realize that while things slow down, they shouldn't come to screeching halt--especially while eating very clean (I was trying to jump start by eating 25g carbs for 3 days staying around 1100-1200 cal, and 300g carbs on the 4th day 2500 cal) and teaching anywhere between 12-16 cardio classes weekly in addition to my personal workouts. I started taking thermogenic fat burners, protein powder drinks instead of food, and I didn't drink enough H20. I woke up one day going into renal failure. That was April. I had so many blood tests, 24 hour urine tests, looking for excess CK, I was fatigued and not working out at all on my own, just teaching my classes. Oddly enough my dr told me that as long as I felt ok (my legs were REALLY swollen) I could still teach. I have been a mess since then and it's only been this last visit to the dr that finally shed light through the addition of the thyroid antibodies test (hashimoto's) and now the IR, which comes with the pcos and the weight gain. Sorry for the long answer, haha..but I am happy to see you too! What natural therapies are you trying for the IR and pcos, what symptoms were you having? And what category do you train for when you train? What was your fueling regiment? he met seems to be working well, I have a much supressed appetite, and my belly isn't as weird looking as it was. Befere the met, it seemed much heavier at the bottom, and now it's rearranging more uniformly. Hopefully it deflates from there, lol. At this point I am less overwhelmed, but impatient and want to feel like me again. I'm tired of being tired!
