View Full Version : What color should I dye my hair?

My natural hair color is showing massively right now and I don't like it (it's boring light brown with a tint of red. not my favorite). I could dye it black again since I already bought the black hair dye, but the problem is that every time I dye my hair black, strands of hair keep falling out and it gets messy. Plus, black requires extensive upkeep.

I had my hair dark mahogany brown for quite awhile and thoroughly enjoyed that. The color preservation shampoo works much better for brown than it does for black, too, and my hair falls out less.

I also have thought of doing something wild and going for fire engine red. I've had red hair before and I liked it.

Pink is another option that I've considered. Or maybe black with red highlights or black with red tips.

Any suggestions? :D Ideas?

How about a dark reddish brown ? Should look great on you.

I, personally, always wanted to do the black with hot pink/ red tips. I don't think DH would appreciate it though. I'm thinking of changing my hair color too. Currently, I'm dark brown, my natural, which took me forever to get back to. I'm thinking of going dark red but not quite auburn.

Bah! What IS it with all these women being afraid to dye their hair because their husband won't like it? Correction: WHAT'S UP WITH THE HUSBANDS?! I've always wondered why some men are so conservative and so afraid of women donning crazy hairstyles. Crazy hair is HOT! I wonder when they will realize how SEXY it really is ;)

i would go with the mahogany. the only thing i don't like about red is it fads too quickly. and then you're back to redying your hair and causing more damange to it.

I don't like black hair dye -- it never looks real and it it's got a questionable ingredient in it. Even people who have natural black hair, the black dye looks like doll factory color.

I would go with auburn.

Ha! My husband fears seeing hair dye in the house...because he never knows what color hair will come out of the bathroom :D He and I comprimise though.I will experiment with color(and he wont whine),but keep it long, and he wont shave his head(Oh boy is his head scary!!!).He wants me to try black once, and while I keep thinking about it,I don't think it will look good on me.Someday I may surprise him though ;) I'm partial to auburn and red.

I like your pic...thats the black right? I like it.

Yeah, zoritsa, that pic is me with black hair. It's pretty recent. I like it, too, and it doesn't look all that fake on me because I have a natural looking tan. That's amusing about you and your husband's hair compromises. My s/o and I have those, as well... well... I don't have any for her, as long as she doesn't shave her head bald (she never would anyway, she loooves her pretty long hair), but her rules tend to be: no shaving of the head + no growing it long. She doesn't like long hair, but that's ok; I prefer short hair on myself... more options for styling!

Unlike your husband, I actually look good with a shaved head (well, buzzed, not like Moby bald) seriously, I have a great head shape and can pull it off, but everyone doubts the shaved headed sexiness! ;) That's also ok, because if I did shave my head, I'd miss my hair.

Awesome, SoulBliss.. BURGANDY is a great color... sort of an "all of the above" compromise; I LIKE IT! :D

Hm, Mahogany is a nice choice...But I would vote for fire engine red!

I tried to dye/ color my hair in that color dozens of times (last try: last Friday), but my brown hair color is stubborn so all I get is a decent shade of red.

KAte, what you need to do is bleach your hair first, then use the red dye. Your hair will be fire engine red then :)

My favorite is black with huge fire-engine red chunks. It also requires a lot of upkeep, but it looks SO great! I think it would look awesome on you, Nightengale!

Zoritsa: Have you tried doing one of those temporary dyes to see if black is for you? I did once (plain black on me looks horrid!). Thankfully, two good washes a day for three days got all the dye out. A hot-oil treatment after the dye faded was all I needed to counteract all the vigorous washing!

I like the black. Thats what I dyed mine.

I dye my hair dark red brown and it's perfect - it's gorgeous as long as it stays dark, and even when it fades it turns a beautiful natural looking red. I don't know if that's what you're into but... its great for me b/c its low/no maintenance (read: money).

I think black and hot pink would look so cool.

Before reading anything except the title (and who posted it) I responded in my head...purple. Not a bright purple, but a color more on the purple side of the spectrum - like a wine purple. Don't know why, but i think you would pull that off well.

Maybe burgundy is about the same idea.

One of those colors that in low lights looks black or dark brown but in the sun shines deep red or purple.

NightengaleShane, maybe your right and I have to try to "really" bleach my hair (or let the hair dresser do it). My last try was one of these "bleaching and coloring in one"- thingys.

Yeah,I think I'm going to try and find a temporary one.A friend's daughter tried one,so I asked what she used. Thanks for the hot-oil treatment tip too.

To funny! Your s/o rules for you sound just like mine for my husband :D He looks equally as scary with long hair as he does with bald....so neither are allowed on him.I think his head looks scary from all the accidents he's been in,lol.

I'm going out on a limb here. What about platinum blonde with pink? I'm not saying you should run out and grab the 40-volume bleach but it looks cute on Jes from Rock of Love and I think, from your picture, that you could pull it off.

I would never admit to my natural haircolor- it's currently a warm, reddish brown- but I truly believe every girl should be blonde at least once in her life!

definitely the burgundy or black with red or pink tips.
My ds had black and pink for awhile and it looked good, better than his plain black or blond and black. Of course add in a few piercings and he thinks he's pretty hot!

Either bright red or blue. Do you ever watch '10 years younger'? The hairdresser's hair is a gorgous shade of blue. She also has had other colours but I like the blue best. ;)

Have you decided yet?

I like the idea of platinum blond with pink tips--I know, I know "Jes on Rock of Love" but it seems like the two of you have similar skin tones so I think it would look awesome!

I went to get a haircut the other day, and the hairdresser at the next cubicle had the most awesome hair color and I couldnt keep myself from looking....she probably thought I was interested in more than her hair!:o
She had black hair with subtle blue and purple highlights....it almost looked like peacock feathers. It was beautful!

I tend to say go for the fun colors if pink is what you want. Although I like black hair it doesn't always look right on those of us who aren't natural although from your avitar you look good with it as far as I can tell.

Mine has been everything from purple to right now dark red.

I once had "flame" hair... blond with orange and red chunks...that was pretty funky and fun. :)

I think I am going to go with burgandy. I'm also getting my hair cut today. It'll be really short because it was a mohawk, and now it's going to be a small faux hawk until it grows out some.

I say go with black again and with red or pink tips. I think that's a good look for girls with shorter hair but the burgandy sounds nice too.
I love dying my hair but I can't really do anything outrageous because of my job.

Show us pics once it's done.

I found an awesome website called makeoversolutions.com and it is wonderul and free! You can download your pic and try on different hairstyles and colors. It's pretty addictive and helpful. I myself love red. :D

I kind of wish I had your natural haircolor! I tried going for a lightish-brown today from my natural dark brown with mahogany/wine natural highlights and oh man was it a mistake :P I got this special stuff that is meant to take dark hair down a few shades more than would be possible with regular hairdye. The color itself looks great, but it has this godawful gold sheen to it that makes the top half of my head look blond in the light! I think I'm going to have to go to the store tomorrow to pick up some chocolate lowlights to see what happens. :\

I'm waiting for a REAL change when I lose the double chin and feel confident getting a crazy cut! I just have REALLY dark, thickish eyebrows, which works with my face (the shape that is) but not with changing hair color!
