Default Canadian chicks... where can I buy a big gal bike?

I'd love to be able to ride a bicycle again. Nothing too sporty or with too many gears. Just a regular bicycle that I can take to the store when I just need a few things. I've had bikes in the past, the last one even had a gel seat but I just got too fat to sit on it comfortably so I gave it to my son who promptly lost it. I know I need to get out there but my crumbly knees won't support walking. I think I'd be pretty happy to feel the wind blow on my face whilst slogging my big (____!____) around town. Any suggestions on where to purchase such a beast?

Not sure where you are, Nora, but I'm in KW - there are a couple of EXCELLENT bike shops here, and they cater for all sorts of people.

I bought mine last year when I weighted over 280lbs! What was important to me was ease of use, comfy big seat for my butt (!) and the ability to put on a basket to trek to the store... okay okay, mine also has a little bell and streamers - no I am NOT kidding! Everyone smiles when they see me - !

Let us know where you are

Heather

I just bought a bike at Canadian Tire last week. $99.99 so I was thrilled...it's nothing fancy though. Man did it hurt my butt for a few days, I think I need a new seat. LOL

My husband and I bought bikes last year, and I thought we were going to need specially made bikes. We went to a bike shop and the salesstaff were so helpful. They pointed out the features we would need, which were mainly no fancy "spring" suspensions, instead solid posts wherever possible, and handlebars at a comfortable height - basically a sturdy old-fashion bike. The bike shop bikes were a little expensive, so we decided to wait to make that kind of investment after we learned whether we would enjoy biking or not. So, we went to Walmart, and found that they had several bikes that fit our criteria from $65 - $150 We bought the third cheapest ($79) and took them home. Hubby was comfortable with his seat, but mine was so horrible it actually caused physical damage (ok damage is too strong a word, but I was very sore in embarassing places for a week, Yow). I bought the widest gel seat that Walmart had (which wasn't all that wide, so I thought I might have to go on the internet to buy one even bigger), but it worked fine. I figured if I got one year of use out of it, I'd be happy, since we were kind of using them as just testers. But the bikes are holding up fine.

So, if I can ride a cheap discount store bike, with only minor adjustments, I don't think you need any kind of special bike.

Hi there!
If you have the $$$, check out this link for some ideas:
http://www.supersizedcycles.com/site...67/page/837988
This link also gives you a source for properly sized bike clothes, should you get inspired and want to wear spandex and all...
Another option is to try a dedicated bike shop near your home.
But, in my husband's opinion (and he biked across Canada from Vancouver to Halifax two summers ago, with a larger friend), the most stress on your bike will be on the tires and wheels. If you are recreational riding, a regular bike should do you just fine (you aren't all that large, anyways...). Just make sure the bike tires are pumped up properly, and keep it maintained properly.
Have fun!

Thanks for your input, Chickies!!! I'm relieved that I don't have to spend a lot of money I don't have right now. I'm gonna have a look at Canadian Tire and Wally World on payday. Thanks again!
