Tamara - you're down another 2lbs - well done! Good to see the weight dropping, isn't it. Looks like you're on track for that Labour Day challenge. :D

It's HOT here. Forecast to reach 39C on Friday - YUK! Maybe for those in the southern US that's OK but I'm not looking forward to it at all. We'll be down in the basement I think, at least when indoors. Exercise is going to be hot and sweaty though - it's already hot in the mornings when I walk the dog.

This last week went well for me - down to 178 as of Sunday morning. Checking back over my progress (I record it in Excel) I did a big drop 4 weeks ago, followed by a week of almost no loss when AF arrived. We'll see if that happens this time - if so I'm prepared for it. But I'm happy about last week, whatever happens this.

We were in Lethbridge this weekend and bought the boys a trampoline. Very good exercise, if it does make me feel a little like I've just had a stiff drink :dizzy:. I need a better sports bra though - even my running one doesn't cut it for serious bouncing (me, not the boobs). DH also wants to get a Bowflex - we looked at the new Revolution model since it doesn't have the rods for little boys to get their fingers trapped in. Looks good - we need to save some $$ though. It's probably much more economical for me than a gym membership - since I have to drive into town for a gym, which is 40km each way, plus of course DH will use it too. He works construction which gives him an unbalanced body - uses some muscles lots and others very little. While in the fitness store Nathaniel got going really well on the ellipticals - impressing the store guy since he said many adults can't seem to get it properly, and he's only 9. The boys all wanted us to buy a boxing punch bag - I guess better than hitting their brothers.

I hope all the other Canucks here had a good Canada Day weekend, and happy July 4 for our friends from the US, coming up tomorrow.

Good day Jax and Happy belated Canada Day to you as well!

I'm glad to see that you are also continuing to see a loss on the SF plan. I'm really enjoying it.

It definitely sounds as though a fitness machine at home is a much better option than having to do all that travelling to work out. I'm fortunate that I have a curves about a 10 minute walk from my house, so it's pretty easy to fit the workouts in. I just had my first weigh in and I've lost weight as well as 2 whole inches (1/2" bust, 1/2" abdomen and a full 1" off my hips!) Woot! I was also participating in a fitness survey with them and was only allowed to work out 3 x 30 min sessions for 3 weeks (total 9 workouts) and that was from June 11 - 30 so I lost 2 inches in about 2 1/2 weeks! WOW! I almost can't believe it but I can feel the difference in my clothes. Also, now that the survey is done I can work out as much as I like (up to 6 days a week).

Friday was hard as it was my neice's grad banquet and I was almost having an anxiety attack over what dinner would be...isn't that ridiculous! So dinner came and of course it was a predressed ceasar salad (that I picked at the parts with no dressing) and then the entree was roasted chicken breast w/ skin (I took the skin off), steamed veggies (ate em all), about 4 tiny little steamed potatoes (ate em all) and some squash (ate that too). Then came the cheesecake and I decided that I would have my piece and enjoy it, so I did and as soon as I got home I logged it all into my meal plan and you know what! I was only about 150 calories over for the day because I ended up skiping my late afternoon and evening snacks so I had about 300 calories from that and about 500 for dinner. My sister did the same thing only she ate the whole salad (dressing and all), ate the chicken (skin and all) and the cheesecake...her count was wayyyy over. LOL But she's also on a 1700 calorie plan and she only wants to lose another 5 lbs in 2 1/2 weeks, which should be easy enough if she stays OP and works out.

I hear ya about the weather Jax! It was like 32 here yesterday and they're calling for 30 Thursday (Stampede sneak-a-peek) and then 34 for Friday (Stampede officially opens with the parade). I can see the marching bands losing players to the heat already and imagine all those mascots, etc. that have to wear those big, heavy, hot suits...Yuck! I'm a sun baby though, I love the heat (unless it's really humid) so I'm ok with it and it gives me more reasons to hit the pool for exercise.

Have a fantastic week and make sure if you ever come to Calgary you let me know and we'll go for a coffee (Starbucks Grande LF Carmel Macciato - 190 Calories, 1g fat, 11g protein)! Woot! LMBO!

Cheers, Tamara

Hi preppie, welcome to the SF plan!

You can do it with your cookout tomorrow! If you check the (US site) there is actually a recipe for cheeseburgers & coleslaw that is On Plan. I had it on Thursday night last week....very yummy. Try to drink your water and watch the alcohol, and since you're the hostess that may make it a little easier since you'll be constantly on the go to make sure everyone has everything they need. But you can allow for a little treat, just make sure you record it.

Even if you slip (like I did Father's day weekend in the Rockies...gained 2.5 lbs in 3 days and took me 5 to get it back off!), you can always just start again and as long as you stay on plan and exercise one day won't blow the whole deal, it's just one day. I track every single thing I eat/drink on the SF website and I had a day I was over 6,000 calories (brunch, Starbucks, lots of drinks) which is 4 days intake for me while I was in Banff, but I just got back on plan the next day and within 5 days I was back to where I started.

Just remember two steps forward and one step back still equal one step forward!

Have tons of fun at your 4th of July celebration and don't beat yourself up for one's only one day!

Cheers, Tamara

Hi Tamara and Jax - wow you are both doing great! Congrats on a good week, Jax. I do video indoor workouts and am not stopped by the weather (now, that doesn't mean I never miss!). Glad to hear Curves is going so well for you, Tamara.

Welcome preppieblond and best wishes on weigh-in.

I have had great luck with new fruit add-ins and wanted to mention - added blueberries to vanilla SlimFast powder and (a different shake of) peach to vanilla as well. Both just taste great and the blueberry is SO purple! LOL! Peach makes for a frothier shake than other fruits it seems to me - very refreshing. I added in a whole peach and when I did blueberries added about that same quantity of serving. I love this change-up because it adds interest and I was going to eat fruit for a snack anyway, so not a single calorie over plan.

I may be at a bit of a plateau right now, but it really doesn't bother me. I know it won't last.

07-04-2007, 12:27 AM
Hi preppieblonde - welcome to the group. It's a good one. Don't worry if you slip - in the long run handling the slips is as important as the easier times too.

Whittlin - I do exercise videos inside too, but when it's hot in the house I get hot and sweaty. I don't like to run the AC except if it's really hot at night (like right now, that's why I'm on the computer, it's over a vent blowing cold air) so I don't put it on for exercise. I sweated LOTS both yesterday on the exercise bike and doing today's workout. Which videos do you like? I recently got "Strong and Streamlined" by Karen Voight and LOVE it! :carrot: :cb: It's got two workouts with cardio and strength/flex portions. I still mess up on a couple of moves in the cardio but am getting better. If we do get a bowflex machine then I will need some different ones that are straight cardio, I get bored using the bike all the time and my treadmill is broken :(.

Its good to hear what you like in the shakes, I don't make the mix ones very often because I prefer the taste of the RTD, but I have been experimenting with different fruit in DH's protein shakes in the morning (which I have instead of slimfast if I make him one). Usually we use berries but we've also used nectarines, probably similar to your peach one. I can't wait to get chocolate protein powder to try your cherry idea. Sounds yummy.

Tamara - I'd love to go for a low-fatte latte one day. :p I'm sure we will be in Calgary again in the not-too-distant future (we were there in Feb so the boys could go to a Flames game) and I'll let you know. Enjoy the Stampede! I was there for it once many years ago and it was fun. There's a smaller one in the Hat but we miss it because it's when we're in Jasper for hockey school.

Well it's cool sitting here but I have things to do so must go. Cool thoughts to all,
Jax

Hello ladies!
I'm a noob when it comes to SF, well kinda. I've had the shakes and whatnot before, but never strictly followed the plans. I plan on doing so starting the 15th of this month, you know once payday hits and I can buy tonnes of SF. I look forward to talking to you ladies in about 10 days and seeing how your progress has gone thus far.
My question is, how long have each of you been on the plan and have you seen a steady loss week by week? What is the average weight you lose each week?
Also, i'm wondering if you ladies find the meal bars more satisfying or the shakes? I've yet to try the meal bars, as I just can't picture myself feeling as satisfied with those. I'd much rather a shake and a plate of veggies. Any recommendations on the best bars would be sincerely appreciated!

07-04-2007, 11:54 AM
Hi Elegent:

:welcome3: to the SF thread!

I have been sticking to the SF plan 100% pretty much since May 23. I have lost a total of 17.5 lbs in that time (and I had one off plan long-weekend that I totally pigged out and gained 2.5 lbs and took 5 days to take it back off) so it probably would have been 20 lbs by now if I hadn't had that bad weekend!

I use the tools on the (US not Cdn) website. They actually give you a meal plan and you can substitute with their subs or your own. I stick pretty close to what they give me or use their subs. I'm on the 1500 calorie plan and this is what my meals for today look like so you can get an idea:

Breakfast - SF Shake (my favorite is the Chocolate Royal w/ skim milk)
Snack - 8 fresh Strawberries and a part-skim Mozza cheese string
Lunch - SF Meal on the go bar (today it's chocolate peanut) plus turkey sandwhich and a mandarin orange
Snack - 1 cup fresh grapes and 1 oz oat bran pretzles
Dinner - Cheeseburger & Coleslaw (SF recipe) plus 1/2 cup fresh grapes
Snack - 6 baby carrots & 2 Tbsp Hummus

It turns out to be a lot of food...I'm never hungry!

I also love to add fruit into my morning shake...mostly berries or a 1/2 banana and 2 tsp peanut butter...Mmmmm

When I have a sandwhich (it's always 1 slice of bread) I use the Weight watchers bread and get two slices for the calorie count of one.

My favorite meal on the go bars are the chocolate peanut (yummy like a candy bar) or the Oatmeal raisin. My sister recently came up from the states and brought me a couple boxes of the High Protein Granola meal bars and the Strawberry Shortcake bar as well as one of the snack bars that we can't get here. They're all pretty yummy. I'm down in the US from July 14 - 22 and I'm gonna bring home a whole suitcase worth of the stuff cause I really enjoy the milk chocolate shake powder (slightly different than the Choc Royale) and the High protein meal bars. I have made many of the SF recipes on the website (except the fish ones) and so far have enjoyed just about all of them.

Just a word to the wise...You don't need to stock up huge on the usually only need one MOG bar per day (so that's about a box a week and Superstore/Walmart are the cheapest I've found them)...the shakes usually last a couple of weeks and the snack bars I've found I don't go through as quickly as I would have thought since I actually prefer a lower calorie (the Snack bars are around 140) snack like fruit or instant Jell-o free chocolate pudding or 100 cal bag of popcord to ward off the salty monster. I do have one once in a while but they're like a candy bar and so I save them for special occasions.

My advice is to go to the SF.COM website and put in your information and register and have a look at the meal plan and your calorie level they recommend. You can also track your activity and your water intake. I love that it tracks all of my nutritional information and I can look at up to 7 days at a time. This is how I found out that I was a little low on fibre intake and a little high on sodium and could adjust accordingly.

Let me know if you need anything else. You can PM me if you need any help wiht the site...I think I've defeated the majority of the bugs by now...LOL

Cheers, Tamara

9 lbs in a week and a half is fantastic :cheer:

Keep up the good work and just make sure you track your calories tonight to see what you might do differently next time.

Have a blast at your party either way!

It sounds like everyone is doing great!I was at the cottage on the weekend and had (gasp) ice cream.Only 2 tablespoons but does it ever slow the weight loss down! I really wanted to get back to my carrot sticks and slimfast shakes! I keep seeing the high protein products advertised in magazines, I hope they do become available here soon!! Have a good week everyone!

Hello Everyone!!
I was just wondering if anyone has just tried drinking just the shakes, with 1 meal a day, basically a piece of meat or chicken with a veggie. Ive totally fell of track with my diet, and I feel like I just need a break from food for a while. I would do medifast if it wasnt so expenisive. So I would like to try this. I was just wonering if anyone has had success just drinking the slimfast shakes?

07-05-2007, 11:59 AM

I just bought my first thing of SF today. I even walked up to the store to buy it so I'm feeling pretty good. I don't wanna rely on using SF forever but I wanna right now to get myself on track. I'm only planning on substituting a shake for one meal a day. Dinner is always a hastle for me so I'm going to drink a shake for dinner every night. I absolutely love breakfast and I think it's important that I eat in the morning. And lunch is a lot easier than dinner to prepare. Does that sound like a good plan to you all??

07-05-2007, 12:38 PM
Hi everyone, and welcome to all,

preppie - sounds like you have a great attitude to the fluctuating scale - well done. And after 9lbs in a short time it could just be wate reorganisation, compounded with the salt. Glad to hear all went well.

staciec878 - I'm not sure if I understand your question. I only use the shakes, not the meal bars, although I do use the muffin bars if I'm in a hurry for a snack. But I eat lots of food as well. Slimfast has evolved from the days of two-shakes-one-meal that it used to be, you are encouraged to snack healthily (essentially having 6 "mealtimes" per day - two slimfast, one sensible meal and three snacks) and keep calories at a minimum of 1300 for safe loss. So it doesn't give you "a break from food" - I eat lots on slimfast. What I find it useful for is speed, convenience and the fact the slimfast meals are well balanced and contain many essential nutrients in a small package. Tamara can give you great advice on following the plan through, she's a pro! Your ticker shows you've had success already with weight loss, slimfast is another tool in your arsenal. You can get back on track! :carrot:

MeOwww - congrats on your walk to the store, your plan sounds good. It's better to eat earlier in the day than in the evening, I think most plans are structured around an evening meal because that's when families generally eat together - due to work, school etc. If it works for you to have your slimfast then, go for it. I don't intend to use slimfast forever either, in fact I usually only replace one meal with it at present, having a protein smoothie with fruit and milk in the morning, since I make one for DH, then slimfast at lunch and a meal at supper (when my family is together). Plus snacks throughout the day.

Cindy - I promised to take the boys for ice cream today - hopefully it won't cause me problems. I can plan for it though, and yesterday wasn't particularly high on calories (it's HOT right now) so have a little "wiggle room" for something small. Don't count on all the US slimfast choices being available here in Canada, I remember doing slimfast years ago at the same time as my sister in the UK. She had WAY more choice in slimfast product than was available here - including fruit smoothies which she loved. I e-mailed slimfast about the different products and they said they had no plans to bring the smoothies to Canada, and every market was different with different products offered. Since we're a much smaller market than the US they may never offer the variety of options here that they do there. Even the Optima is different in the two countries, with the Canadian product having more calories than the US optima.

Well it's hot as promised here - and I find I'm not eating my 1300 calories. I eat lots in the mornings but suppers have been small - often no more cals than my slimfast meals, according to FitDay. I don't want to eat too little, but it's still really hard for me to get used to having a calorie count close to my "aim" before I have supper. All part of the learning curve, I guess.

I hope everyone is keeping cool and having a great week,

07-05-2007, 01:07 PM
I basically mean the 2 shakes and one meal. Ive been on the slimfast website, and I had a meal plan made up, but I just dont want to eat alot of food right now. So I want to just eat 2 shakes, and one meal. But I tend to do better if I eat food for breakfast, so this morning I ate 3 sausage links, 200c. 0 carbs. All the calories in 2 shakes, and one meal is not alot at all. So the sausage isnt that bad. Ive lost some weight, but using every single differnet diet. I get bored very easy, and just cant stick to it, so I switch diets. I seemed to have the most success with just counting calories, and lots of exersize. Once I stopped exersizing I still am losing weight but you cant tell, only me, since I step on the scale every 5 minutes. So Im going to dust off my turbojam and put in in the dvd player, and continue to do Couch 2 5k. I just need to find some kind of meal plan I can stick to.

07-05-2007, 01:20 PM
Hello Ladies!

Stacie: While I understand you wanting to "kick start" your diet again, SF is meant to help with an overall lifestyle change. As Jax said, gone are the days of 2 shakes a day and sensible dinner. If you only drink 2 shakes and eat a little meat/fish and some veggies you'll find (if you track in something like fitday or the daily plate) that you will be severely lacking in protein, calcium, fibre (especially) and these are all very necessary for weight loss. Also if you go too restrictive as soon as you start eating normally (even if it's fairly low-cal, healthy food) you'll put weight back on and end up back where you started. It's important to get enough protein, whole grains, fruits & veggies as well as calcium.

Meow: I don't see any problem with having your shake for dinner as long as you are still hitting your calorie target each day. If you are taking in too few calories at first then you really don't have anywhere to go once you need to break a plateau or lose enough that you need to drop your calories to continue losing. I would go ahead with your shake for dinner, but make sure that between breakfast, lunch and snacking you are still hitting your target range. Also, as I've said above, make sure you are getting the nutrients you require daily. and the Daily plate are good ways to track your nutritionals to make sure you're getting what you need.

preppie: Don't get discouraged...I'll have a couple of days where the scale will show I'm up (especially around TOM) and then BANG, I'm down 2 lbs! Just keep doing what you're doing and tracking your nutritionals and calories, you'll see the results soon. Remember it can take a couple of weeks for a body to recognize a change in lifestyle.

Jax: I had a slice of cheesecake last Friday and it barely put me over, so have your ice cream...enjoy it and know that one little scoop of ice cream is nothing to worry about, it's when you sit down withe the whole pint of Hagen Das that it's a problem... :T

I can't wait to hit the stores in the US week after next and stock up on the US SF products. I have a couple cans of the Milk Chocolate shake powder as well as some High Protein bars, etc that my sis brought up for me week before last. I see that they're lower in calories than our Canadian options, but hopefully it won't be long before the NEW Optima line hits our shelves (they're 33% less sugar or something like that which will make a huge difference). My mom has agreed to be on the plan with me while I'm in the US which will make it much easier for me to stay OP and I'll be able to use the US products as well. I'll be interested to see if that makes a difference in my loss. I'll also be able to swim every day which will be really nice.

Everyone have a great day and get ready for a smokin hot weekend Jax! It's gonna be a melter even here!

Cheers, Tamara

Wow, things sure are hopping around here!

Great to see all the newbies!

I don't have a lot of time to post right now, but I wanted to drop in and say I'm going to have to put any serious dieting on hiatus for awhile, because I'm pregnant :)

I'll still do a SF shake for breakfast because I like a liquid breakfast & I like all the vit/min/nutrients it has in it.

I'll still check in here from time to time, too, to keep up with my SFbuddies!

07-05-2007, 04:10 PM
WOW Cheryl! Congratulations Sweetie! :bb:
Is this your first baby? I'm so excited for you. I absolutely loved being pregnant, even though I was only 19 it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. My only advise is keep eating all the healthy stuff you have been, lots of fruits/veggies/quality protein and whole grains, you obviously won't be able to lose weight for the next 9 months but you will certainly be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle and it may actually be easier to diet and lose weight once you have the baby. Also exercise, exercise, exercise! It will make your labour much easier and make it easier to get back into pre-preggers shape. I'm so happy for you and please do keep in touch and let us know how things are going. When is your due date?

All the best,

07-05-2007, 05:05 PM

Yes, this is my 1st!

I think I would be enjoying it more if my MIL didn't accuse me of lying about being pregnant (even AFTER I showed her the little stick!).

Not sure yet when I'm due, because my 1st doctor's appt. is next Tuesday (7/10). I FEEL, based on all the changes in my body (including the two weeks of const---tion which I now think was a sign of early pregnancy), that I'm probably a good 3 weeks along.

When I find out for sure, I'll be sure to check in :)

07-05-2007, 08:49 PM
Congratulations Cheryl!! Enjoy your pregnancy, continue to eat as well as before, and while you won't be losing weight, you won't gain to excess either and you'll be down again after baby comes much faster.

:congrat: :bb:

Woo hoo - and yes, please check in with us to keep us in the loop.

I poured a can of straberries and cream SF into a freezer container, froze it and added 6 fresh strawberries and put in the blender for a few seconds.Delicious!!

Man that sounds SOOOOO good!!!! I'm gonna have to try it! Usually I stick w/the chocolate shakes, but that is something I've GOT to try!!

07-07-2007, 07:22 PM
That is the most marvelous news, Cheryl! Thank you so much for letting us in on it!!! Many congratulations, all best wishes, and yes definitely keep us updated on this important progress!

Fun recipe, bargoo!

Meow, welcome - I've substituted a shake most any meal or snack time. So I'd say sure, that sounds like a plan!

Stacie my answer to your initial question would have to be that yes I tried it and it didn't work for me. It was only when I started including the snacks (and I do mostly light-feeling fruits and vegetables 'cause I know what you mean about not wanting too much food) that I had a plan that I could stick with and get results.

07-08-2007, 09:44 AM

07-09-2007, 09:11 AM
Hello all,

Well we had a great weekend camping, and I still managed to show a drop of 1lb this week. It was more than that before we left (down to 176 lb) but this morning showed 177 lb which is still less than last week so I am happy with that. I expected some stalling with eating less healthily and cutting back on the vigorous exercise. We did spend lots of time in the pool though, and so I got some activity in. I took my slimfast RTDs and had them both days - it's the "extras" I had which made for the little rise. That and not drinking enough, I have a slight headache this morning, so think I am a little dehydrated. Unfortunately I also came home with a nasty rash around my neck - a reaction to the sunscreen I think, or perhaps that and the pool water - but it's only on my neck, nowhere else. So not much outdoor time for this puppy in the next couple of days. :( Hopefully it won't bug me when I work out.

This gives me a preview of what to expect at the end of this month when we go to Jasper for a week. Perhaps not ice cream every day. The funny thing is I never eat ice cream at home, only when out, but when it's hot it's nice to have . I'm going to take my exercise gear and my bike so I can run and bike around the campsite and area. We did actually have very healthy suppers this trip, so I plan to do the same for Jasper. DH has ordered a portable gas BBQ so that we can continue to cook much as we do at home. This should help.

Well I hope everyone else is doing well and slimming down! Faylene, did you e-mail 3FC about the tracker problem? I just changed mine and it seems to work.

07-10-2007, 12:40 AM
faylene, this is just a guess, but might your numbers be out of order? When I look at my signature edit page, the three numbers for my ticker are 170/140/145 (start, then goal, then current).

Congratulations on one pound down, Jax.

I had snuck up a few pounds :nono: and am getting them OFF now! Hopefully next week will show an actual loss. Right before T.O.M. today.

07-10-2007, 02:54 AM
Checking in here! I completely went off my plan from June 30 until now. I had gotten down to 202 before we went away, and I was sure by the 4th, I'd be down to 200. But all the yummy munchies and all... I just figured I would start back up at home but I have yet to do it. Today (7/10/07) I am hoping to get going again, as I went back up to the last weight I posted here, plus a pound. I refuse to change my ticker, though. I want to get below my last posted weight before I change it!!

The next big event: my childhood friend's wedding on July 28. He's been my friend my whole life (literally) and it's been 3 years since I saw he and his brother...last time was when his brother got married in 2004. I was fat then, but I think I was lighter than I am now!! EEK!! My hubby's & my second child, our DD, had just been born 5 months before, and I think I was at about 196. I really wanted to be smaller now than I was then, but I don't think it's going to happen :( .

Anyway! Trying to get back on the wagon today. Money is really tight right now, so I'm going to be keeping lunches simple, like to a turkey sandwich and RTD shake.

Hope everyone in the U.S. had a great Independence Day!

Well this morning the scale said 206.5! That is 1/2 lbs from losing 20 lbs in 7 weeks. I have to say I love this plan. I love the food, I love the convenience of the SF products and I love the results I'm getting. I can't wait for ONEderland. I haven't been under 200 in about 5 years or so...I'm very excited. My sister just found a bunch of SF stuff that she hadn't seen when she came up north a few weeks back so I'm excited to try them when I'm down. She said the Blueberry crisp MOG bar is delish!

Things are really hectic right now so I haven't been cooking a bunch. Mainly Lean Cuisine dinners and salad or a ww wrap with chicken breast sliced, lettuce, carrot, cucumber, bean sprouts, Lite Ranch dressing and mustard...Mmmm It's been so hot I just can't stand the thought of using the oven or the stove. I'm in a bit of a flap now as I still have so much to do and I leave on Saturday. DH should be home from the field on Friday night so I'm hoping that I have everything ready and we can have a nice evening together before I'm gone. He's been out since other than Fri. we won't see each other for like 2 weeks. Yuck!

I'm working out meal plans for while I'm in the mom is going to grocery shop for me before I I bet she waits until I am there on Saturday and we both end up going. I love shopping whether it's food or clothes or decorating stuff. It's funny, but even though I had to shop in plus clothing stores most of the time I never lost my love of wanting to shop for clothes.

Anyhow hope you all have a great day.

preppie - I can't find any evidence online for slimfast causing gallstones or other gallbladder problems, even circumstantial evidence as posted in the alli forum here - except there. I'm not a doctor, so do ask one if you're really concerned. Everyone has things they don't like to do/use - for some it may be meal replacements. FWIW, *personally* I'd rather structure my diet around a product like slimfast than use a fat-absorption blocker like alli. But that's why I use slimfast, and not alli.:D I also have a deep loathing of artificial sweeteners. It doesn't make them bad, but I do avoid them like the plague. That's one reason I *like* the slimfast program.

What CAN cause gallstones or other gallbladder problems is very rapid weight loss (among other things). People with gallbladder problems are often overweight, and typically told that weight loss will help. If the loss is too rapid it can exacerbate the problem. The person posting on the alli forum about slimfast is talking about something that happened 10 years ago. At that time the slimfast program was shake-shake-meal, likely much lower calories than today. So it's quite possible that someone could use slimfast to restrict calories very severely and cause very quick weight loss. This *can* cause gallbladder problems. I remember when I was in my teens there were "meal replacement" plans available which consisted of ONLY shakes, no meals, and limited calories to about 660/day. (Yes, I'm 40, so it was a while ago ;).) This could be equally problematic.

Remember too that the formula of slimfast has changed in 10 years. If, indeed, there was a problem with it (rather than its application), it's no longer the same product it was at that time. I also think if we were seeing serious problems with it there would have been news and/or lawsuits (at least in the US). One or two people does not an issue make.

Anyhow, I guess this is a long winded way of suggesting not to worry about what people post. There are people who like and dislike pretty much every diet option available. Some swear by Atkins, South Beach, slimfast etc. Others have intense dislikes of certain programs. If you have a concern about yourself, talk to your doctor.

Hope this helps,

Great response Jax! I've never heard of anything like that with SF, but I totally agree that if today's SF was CAUSING medical problems there would be some form of medical report on it. How does the person on the Alli forum know that the gallstones were not already present? I had gallstones about 15 years ago, they found them on an ultrasound while I was pregnant with my daughter (thought it might be an ectopic preg. but turned out to be gallstones). My father also has them and my doctor is of the opinion that there can be a genetic link. I had my gallbladder removed when my daughter was 5 months old and so I have no idea if SF affects it cause I don't have one...LOL I've talked to a nutritionist though and she said that the SF looked to be a good, nutritious choice (the US one is even better in her opinion becuase there is less sugar) and the other contents looked good to her. She said that as long as I was eating lots of other things (fruits/veggies/fiber/lean protein) that it was a good diet plan and was probably really convenient for people that don't have time to make breakfast. I also know that since starting the SF plan my bad cholesterol, my body fat %,and my BMI are dropping on a constant basis. I'm going to go to the doctor for my annual right away and we'll do a full work up, but for now I'm pretty happy with how things are going.
Everyone has the "perfect" diet plan. You have to agree to disagree I think. There is a girl here at work that has lost almost 60 lbs in the last 4 months and the diet she is on is incredibly restrictive compared to my plan. But it's working for her so I cheer her on and she cheers me on and when we can we share recipes and ideas and don't judge each other's plans.

Jax: Have a blast in Jasper. I'm off to Kansas City on Saturday, so I may not post much for a week, but I'll be back on the 23rd.

Have a great OP day everyone!

Old slimfast used to cause all kinds of health problems due to rapid weight loss. then they changed the formula.

07-13-2007, 04:25 PM
Extreme deprivation runs the risk of causing problems for all/any internal organs. It would seem that including the "sensible evening meal" that SF has recommended even "back in the day" when they started would have been a safeguard, but maybe not enough if a person at a high weight didn't know to eat enough calories at that meal OR if they were getting no variety (which can be a big deal for our health).

What my family members have heard from doctors is that gallbladder problems stem from high fat foods and that's why they recommend low-fat diets for patients trying to avoid gallbladder surgery. So, if the culprit is a high-fat diet, that wouldn't be SlimFast. In fact SlimFast would fit right in to the low-fat diets I've seen prescribed for family members.

I'm the one among us, remember, who was dealing with a mystery weight fluctuation UP :o:^::shrug: BUT as of now I'm only one pound above ticker, so very satisfied with my mini-project of getting that under control!!! Can't compliment the peaches in the vanilla shakes enough :cloud9: tastes so cooling, and inexpensive right now, just right for the season. I really have to shop for cherries that are a reasonable price, though, and lately not finding that, so my fav cherry/chocolate shake may be out for the season.

No change in the scale over last week *sigh*. Ah well, it's been hot and although I've generally kept my calories in the right range, I haven't necessarily been eating the right sort of food.

On a more upbeat note - I started running again (in the early mornings, too hot later) and this morning went for 20 mins walk/run, feeling really good at the end. :running:

I hope everyone has a good slimfasting week! I'll have to do my next weigh in on Sat. because that's when we leave for Jasper. I'll be taking lots of slimfast RTD with me, and the new barbeque came so BBQ with salad for supper. The only snag is the awesome bakery there - and I LOVE their bread. Willpower will be needed. But I'll be able to run in the mornings.

Keep it up, and the scale will go down,

Hey everyone!

Just checking in to see how my SF buddies are doing! I've gained weight--suprise!!

5 pounds since the last time I "officially" weighed. The morning queasiness (not exactly SICK yet) is starting. I had to leave my a.m. class for about 10 minutes to let my stomach settle down this morning. The only thing that finally made me feel a little better was to eat some pb & toast crackers.

Oh, joy :)

goodmorning everybuddie
well the sun is shinning and i have lots to do but im really discouraged this morning. i lost 12lbs the frist 7days but its been 7+ more days and i havent lost a thing. i keep trying to remind myself that i am a very slow loser except when i did south beach which i really loved but its very complicated for someone with my lifestyle which is on the road most of the time with my truck driving hubby so im hoping the slimfast will kick in again. well hope all is well ith everyone and hopefully will catch up with everyone later

Been a bit slow around here--I hope that's not a bad sign!!

I saw the baby's heartbeat for the first time on Tuesday. Incredible!

I had only gained one pound at my weigh-in at the dr's office! That's on schedule with what "they" recommend (1 lb./week).

07-20-2007, 08:55 AM
Hi all,

Although official weigh-in isn't until Sunday, this morning (and yesterday) has me down 20 lbs from start, at 175.6 lbs. Yippeee!! It will have to be semi official as DH has decided he wants to leave for Jasper tonight, to get somewhere a little cooler. After a monster thunderstorm last night - very good lightning show - it's still 20 degrees this morning.

So I'll be incommunicado for a while, taking my slimfasts, running shoes, bike and healthy food. Hopefully I will stay on plan.

Happy for you, Jax! :D Great numbers. Have fun while you're away.

4myself, sounds like you are right on track.

faylene, have you had some more success? Don't get discouraged, because you're bound to have some times that are better than others. I also found South Beach to be complex. We didn't ever really do it - just learned. But my brother in law had great success.

I also know that since starting the SF plan my bad cholesterol, my body fat %,and my BMI are dropping on a constant basis. I'm going to go to the doctor for my annual right away and we'll do a full work up, but for now I'm pretty happy with how things are going. -Tamara

Faaaaantastic, Tamara.

looking around for bargoo, who has reached 138 I believe, having read a post on another thread. She needs to come in here and brag! ;)

Happy with myself today, I exercised and have eaten right on taget, plenty of water.

I have regained my ticker weight!:dancer::broc::jig:

I know that doesn't seem like much in a way, but will WILL have fluctuations on our journey and being faithful to pull them back under control will make the difference. Even if July does nothing else for me, I will be pleased to hold the line on my 25 pound loss.

But we do have one week left this month! Here's hoping it offers several of us some losses!

07-24-2007, 04:52 PM
Sigh.....Faylene if you check this, I've been playing with your signature.......

I think I got it completely turned around from what you had!

07-25-2007, 02:03 PM
Oh, Cheryl, thank you for finding that darling "ticker" and sharing! By the way, ARE you into morning sickness yet?

Well, (drumroll) ...:goodscale I had a one pound loss!

Now at 26 total pounds down. Very pleased. I spent most of July fighting back a fluctuation UP in weight, so this is happy news.

Just back from the grocery store, I found blueberries and strawberries that looked good for upcoming shakes! Price on SlimFast was definitely NOT a special this week, so only one canister (I buy extras when on special).

Does anyone ever see SlimFast coupons, btw? I've noticed it is one brand/item that almost never has coupons in my newspaper. Also even though I buy it, my grocery locations never give a print-out store coupon for it, even though they do that for several of my other regular purchases.

Hi Everyone! I'm back from Kansas City. What a wonderful vacation, if you can call 8 hours a day of shopping vacation! LOL I went down south with 2 suitcases and came back with 5! I guess a bunch of new (smaller!) clothes and sixteen pairs of new shoes will do that! Hahaha!

I didn't stay 100% on plan so I only lost 1/2 a pound while away, but at least I didn't gain. :D The wedding was spectacular. It was the third marriage for both of them and was the first time they got to do exactly what they wanted and had the money to finance anything they wanted to do/have. My sister looked like a princess and despite the melting hot temps during the ceremony (outdoor garden wedding) everything went well.

I'm very glad to be home, sleeping in my own bed, back on plan and back to the gym. I missed my flight home on Sunday and ended up not being able to get back until Monday night and then took Tuesday off to unpack and get settled.

Sounds like everyone is doing great. Cheryl, make sure to keep updating us. My girlfriend just found out she's pregnant as well. We're trying to figure out her due date before she goes to the OB/GYN on Thursday, but she can't remember the first day of her last period. I guess we'll know soon enough. I'm kinda bummed as my DH had to go out of town for work on Monday morning so not have I not seen him since July 14 (briefly when he dropped me off at the airport @ 6am), but I won't get to see him know until next Tuesday! :( Maybe I'll make the 4.5 hour drive on Friday night and surprise him at his hotel with some of my new lingerie...:o

Have a great day everyone.

07-25-2007, 05:06 PM
Oh, Cheryl, thank you for finding that darling "ticker" and sharing! By the way, ARE you into morning sickness yet?

Yep! I call it "selective eating enforcement." So far I've discovered that the baby "doesn't like" Chinese food and tropical fruit smoothies from Sonic! Blech. And what that ticker says is actually true--I always thought I kept my potty pretty clean until now :barf:

Cheryl, make sure to keep updating us. My girlfriend just found out she's pregnant as well. We're trying to figure out her due date before she goes to the OB/GYN on Thursday, but she can't remember the first day of her last period.
That didn't matter for me--I wound up being a week off anyway!

Maybe I'll make the 4.5 hour drive on Friday night and surprise him at his hotel with some of my new lingerie...

07-25-2007, 05:06 PM
Oh, Whittlin, I'll be on the look out for SF coupons for ya!

07-25-2007, 08:05 PM
I started today {26 July} So far I've had a RTD shake, a cup of Motts applesauce and I'm working on a bottle of instant green tea.

I have 50 pounds to goal and I've done slim fast before with amazing success. I was also working in a factory at that time though, and now I'm a student, so I'm looking to add more high energy burn activities to my life.

THat's about all I can think of to say. if you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

07-30-2007, 10:24 AM
Hi everyone,

Whitlin' congrats on your loss. It's hard to stall but great to know you're back on the downward path. Woo hoo. I've never seen coupons for SlimFast either. If I did they would probably only work in Canada though...

Tamara it sounds like your trip was great. Glad you had fun shopping for smaller clothes. I noticed on this trip that my jeans are too big (Yippeeee) but we have NO money right now so I'll have to use a belt. Not like I need jeans at 30+ degrees though. Besides, I plan to continue to lose weight so I don't need too many sizes! Congrats on your little loss also, sounds like you're doing great.

4myself, things sound like they are going as expected. I hope the sickness doesn't get too bad. LOL on the "selective eating enforcement" - that's a good one.

mkat321 :welcome: to our slimfast group. I hope you can find lots of activity options - I've been running, hiking (recently - we were in Jasper on vacation) and biking, as well as using exercise videos and weights. I'm working on a 50lbs loss on slimfast too, part way there now. Congrats on the 40lbs lost so far and keep with it!

Well we had a :dancer: GREAT vacation, although I didn't stay very on plan. I did have my breakfast shakes but lunch was usually off plan - I still have lots of slimfast for the next week or two! I weighed myself this morning and am up 0.8 lbs since leaving, but I also know my water intake has been all messed up with a long drive yesterday so will see how it goes over the week. All in all I did lots of activity but ate more than I have been. I'm not disappointed with a small gain, even if it sticks, because it gives me an idea of what to expect with less than stellar eating plans. I'm back on track this morning and ready to lose!

Owen had a wonderful time at hockey school and wants to go again next year (and forever!). The rest of us did lots of hiking, bicycling around the campsite and other activity. It was a good rest and nice to be somewhere a little cooler. It's still WAY too hot here. A large black bear wandered past our trailer the first evening, but after that all we saw was lots of elk, grazing around the campground. There was lots of snow this year so the grasses were good (and the buffaloberries - hence the large bear) and we even saw baby elk, still with their spotted coats.

My garden isn't too happy with the heat - things were rather dry yesterday when we got home. I watered and will see how it all comes back. Otherwise we'll be eating small vegetables for a while.

Well that's it, I hope everyone has a great week.

Whittlin congratulations on being so close to goal, you must be feeling pretty good..
I did a happy dance this morning , too, scale said 135.
