Upper AND lower body workouts (gym will be closed tomorrow and I took yesterday off.)

Today was SO WEIRD. I could NOT get my heart rate to get up and stay up. My recovery times were miraculous and I could not find a sustainable running pace that put me in my usual 155-157 range. I started out doing high-intensity intervals with real sprints in them, but when I ran out of steam for the sprints, I was literally unable to jog my way to 155. Usually I'll run for a couple of minutes at 7mph and then slowly decrease to 6.1mph with a slight incline and then hang out at that pace while maintaining the 155 heart rate. Today I couldn't stay at 155 even with an added incline and 6.5mph. It was very, very strange and quite frustrating too. I thought I might as well be walking. I doubt that I became miraculously fitter since Sunday so the only thing I can think of is that I just got my period last night and for some reason that has changed my body chemistry. What do you think? Can there be a correlation between having one's period and not being able to get one's heart rate up and staying up???

I went for a 19 mile bike ride today--twice as long as my longest ride yet! It was beautiful out and I had a great time. Alas, my butt was officially kicked by an unfair preponderance of hills and a persistent head wind on those same hills.

Still, I burned 840 calories and got lots of lovely sun! Hooray!

I have to say, exercise is magical. I woke up a miserable, hungover human being this morning and I dragged myself to the gym with the intention of doing nothing more than walking for 30 minutes. But I started running and by the time I got to my 30 minutes I felt sooooo much better that I just kept going and going with some high intensity intervals. It was fantastic. I'm a new woman.

Sorry I haven't been able to join y'all for a while, I hurt my knee somehow and can barely walk. I do have a question though, I was thinking of adding an elliptical ( and iPod) to my Christmas list, since so many of you seem to enjoy them and have had results. Do they aid in giving your butt a lift? I have a wide, flat butt, and was hoping to kind of bubble it up some...Youknow, J-Lo style. lol :p

2-1/2 hour walk/jog with my little boy. He rode his new bike and I chased him to a local fishing pond and back. He's only 3 and 3 months, and he rode like a pro, everyone was amazed at this super athlete kid - on his way back after over two hours of peddling, he got off his bike and started jogging a few blockes. I guess he was preparing for a triathalon! Here I was buying a tagalong bike so when "he" got tired I'd bike and pull him on this bike with one wheel and pedals that would attach to mine... it was our first long jaunt with his bike and here I was huffing and puffing trying to keep up with him. 2-1/2 hours of walking felt good though...

Grrrrr. Everyone but me has a new bike!!! I test rode a Specialized hybrid yesterday and it seemed pretty good--but it's $500!

Today: 32 mins treadmill (300)

...followed by a 35 min kickboxing video (I love this woman because if I add some calf raises on at the end, her kickboxing workout does more for me than the leg workouts I do...mostly because her kickboxing philosophy seems to be "every kick is better if preceded by a squat and followed by a lunge).

...followed by a 10 min abs video (HARD!)
