Weight Loss Surgery - I think I'm going to do it (lapband), I have questions.

Hello all,

I have decided to finally do something for REAL about my weight. I have been on a diet for all of my 20's. I just turned 30 and I REFUSE to go through this any longer. I weigh 262 and I'm 5" 4. Two months ago I found out I have HBP and now I'm on meds. I just went to the dr. today and she told me my cholesterol is borderline and I might have to take meds if I don't lose some weight soon!! I'm so scared and freaked out because my dad had a heart attack in his 40's and had to have triple bypass surgery. Diabetes runs rampant on both sides of my family. Both my mom and dad have it. My paternal grandmother died from complications associated with diabetes (after she had her leg amputated). Only By the grace of God I don't have it. My maternal grandmother had high blood pressure and passed from a brain anyrsm. I just don't want to go through that. I honestly feel like CRYING right now and I can't take being fat and unhealthy one more day!!!

A few years back I attended a seminar on the lapband and at the time I decided not to do it because I just knew I could do it on my own. Years later and several pounds later I realize I just can't do it. I've tried EVERY program you can think of and I will do well for a time and then... DOWNHILL or would it be up cause that's the way the scale moves.

For those of you who have had the surgery, how long after surgery did you see results?
Do you have the issue of hanging skin?

Thanks for letting me vent and any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck, it sounds like you've made a sensible decision. I wish you all the best.

I feel ya. I understand that desperate feeling. I can't answer your questions...because I had the RNY...but do wish you luck in your journey to health!

Not to sway you away from the lapband...but why did you choose the lapband over the RNY or DS? Just curious...

I have the band and if I had to do it again, I would. Results are instant, you start losing from day one.

Everyone is different, I know folks who you could see a difference with 20 lb loss where as nobody could really see a difference with me until I lost 50 lbs.

WL with everyone varries..... if you eat clean, healthy and stay away from junk (and exercise) you'll lose faster than if you don't.

The band is a tool, not the cure so remember, even with it you will still need to watch what you eat (calories) and exercise.

Congrats on your decision.

don't you just love DECISIONS? those major turning points? sounds like you've done your homework. listen to leenie and the other lapbanders around here. they're smart, and they're living proof that it can work, and you can be healthy.
