 Hi everyone,I was just thinking,I am such a food lover go figure I got so heavy:) anyways I am pre-op for rny gastric bypass, and I was wondering did your thoughts change after surgery about food. Is it easier not to obsess about the food since now you have to change some of your food. I guess what makes me not sure If I am 100% ready for surgery is because I wonder how I am going to react to the food changes needed to live the healthy life I want. I haven't had any one on one aptt yet,but not this friday but next friday I will be going to ssf Kaiser for 3 appt one with head of bariactrics, dietician, and therapist. so I am thinking that will help me out too.Everyone has been so kind here, thought I could ask the question here take care

Everyone deals with the loss of food as their "friend" differently. At first it was rough...when I was on clear liquids my hubby brought home a pizza and I wanted to kill him...I was angry. But as the pounds came off....it got easier. Now when I go to a family function and there is tons of food...I can enjoy the food as much as the people...just not as much (quantity)...I graze...a bite here...a bite there...instead of a plate here...a plate there...

Good luck!

Mine have not changed... I wish they did (I have the LB btw). I think its gonna take a long time to change it for good. I mean during the "honeymoon phase" after surgery yes, I was more careful in choosing what I ate but old habits crept back in.

IMHO, I think the younger you are the more likely you'll be able to change your habits. Plus GBP is different than with the band.

You'll do fine.

I'm a foodie I LOVE FOOD. That being said I'm working on loving food but not seeing it as a solution (or a punishment as the case may be) I had bypass on Sept 8. 2 points i want to make i still think about food a lot However I try to think more of healthy stuff Thursdays are my night to myself so I always try to make something yummy and easy. Kings has a spinach and onion turkey/chicken burger. I thought about it on and off all day. I'm trying to reframe my habits to focus on healthy stuff and veggies they can taste as good and better than butter and cheese.
Second point! You can still appreciate food! Last Saturday Was my Birthday :D we went to a trendy seafood restaurant and split appetizers and I had about 1/2 of my main course (the meal sizes were trendy aka small)
The waitress brought out a beautiful dessert a tasting plate with happy birthday written in chocolate. I took out my phone and took a picture of it. I had a small bite of each thing (they were divine!) and slid it over to DH

sorry for the ramble! It's not about perfection its about changing your habits and being consistent.

Seabreeze, it takes TIME and it does gets easier. I love food too, it got me to over 400 lbs:dizzy: I even still have food dreams sometimes eating all the fried chicken, mac & cheese, sweets, and everything else I USED to eat on a DAILEY basics.

I am now on a low carb/low fat diet that I have been doing since my lapband surgery back in March '06, by sticking with it I'm now down 192 lbs. Seeing the scale move helps me stay on track.;) I'm not perfect I still do go off my plan every now & then but I get right back on it. I usually go off my plan about once or twice a month. The main thing is to keep yourself in prayer, stay focused, get some exercise in, drink your water, and a good support system in your family and friends and online:hug: Wishing you all the best. I'm here to help you if you need it.;)

Kim - just want to add a couple more pennies in here. RIGHT AFTER THE SURGERY - like for the first 6 months - ya gotta stay absolutely on track with your protein, water, and exercise. the good news [and you can look at it as good or bad news, but i prefer to consider it good news] is that you won't really be hungry, in a very real sense [now, head hunger is a different matter!]

after about a year, tasting a little here and there is just fine. ya gotta take advantage of your 12-18 month window for the best possible weight loss [doesn't mean you won't be able to lose weight after that or ever again, it's just that for this period of time, it's EASIER than being 'on your own.']

and after about 2 years, you should be able to eat pretty much whatever you want IN SMALL AMOUNTS. and sensible choices. believe me, right now, i'd rather have a small serving of something WONDERFUL than a large serving of something that's pretty blaaahh just because it's a full plate of food!
