Okay, so this probably is a dead horse that is beat to a pulp by now, but let me ask the question from my point of view and see what suggestions I get. :)

I don't really have a lot of snacks but there are times when I want something to tide me over until supper. This happened last night. We were waiting for DH's MRI appointment, and we were all hungry but didn't want to eat supper then, nor did we have the time. We were not at home, so you know what that means. Well, we went to Sonic, and DH and 2 sons got a kids meal since it wasn't "supper time" (so just what is a kids meal anyway?!? LOL). Anyway....I was hungry and did want something, but I ONLY got a drink and ate NONE of their food. (Yay for me! LOL!)

To the question - what would you do in this scenario? Just something to tide you over without a lot of fat/calories but with very limited options (as in drive-ins/stores). I didn't have any snacks stored up in the vehicle either, unfortunately. :^:

Thanks a ton!

I simply get a garden salad with light dressing. Almost all fast food places have some type of salad and light dressing.

Me too, I'd get a garden salad as well. Or if I want something more filling, I'd get a hamburger - only 250 calories. I just looked it up and realized it has more calories than the grilled snack wrap with ranch (270) calories. That definitely came as a surprise.

I guess what I would do is go to the websites of every fast food restaurant that you and your family are most likely to visit from time to time and check out some of their healthy, low cal options.

I'm not familiar with Sonic's menu, but if I'm in this situation I usually get something small and cut out a snack/part of dinner to compensate for the calories if I must. If I don't, then I'm just moody because I start getting a fast food craving (it only happens when I smell it!) Also, if I remember, I try to keep a granola bar or something of that sort in my purse.. those 110 calorie Pria bars are great, and they're sweet and crunchy so you feel like you're at least eating *something* substantial.. lol

I keep a baggie with a couple of handfuls of almonds in my purse at all times for just such occasions. They have come in handy several times - and they don't take up much space at all. On plan, and measured to boot!:D

Small salad, or worst case seneraio, jr/kids plain burger, take the bun off, eat the veggies.

If I had nothing on me I would make a 2nd stop at a convenience store and grab a protein bar, or a granola bar, or some nuts....that type of thing. Way to go on staying on-plan through that! I know you were hungry but nice job avoiding the unhealthy stuff!

If you know you are going to have to go to an appt. you might pack you some crisp veggies (they should keep in your purse). That way you've got something that will take a bit to chew, low in calories, and should fill you up.

I like the pre-measured nuts idea as well as the bars if necessary.

It sounds like you did great at Sonic. I probably would've caved and got something fried and full of fat.

Great suggestion on finding good choices at fast food places in advance. Grilled chicken sandwiches (no mayo) are usually good bets, along with a side salad.

I've also done like Tricia and stopped in a convenience store to get a Kashi bar or something similar.

Are any of you old enough to remember the old game show "Let's Make A Deal"?? I think of that show any time I open my purse!!

I usually have the minimum of one or two of the small single serving fruit in cans , a small box of raisins, a snack sized baggie filled with Fiber One cereal, a package of popcorn and a package of single serving tuna in my purse...shoot one time I found a boiled egg in my purse (and the last time I remembered boiling eggs was at least a month prior!!). So the bottom line is that unless I'm stranded on a deserted island for a long period of time I wouldn't have any excuse for buying something else to eat. But, if I didn't have my purse with me I would have gone for the salad or a plain old hotdog with mustard and ketchup.

(Just so you don't think my purse is just for food...one time I decided to dump out all the change in my purse into one of those coin changer machines at the grocery store. By the time I had finished dumping out all the coins I had close to $80!!! And once I counted 42 tampons running around the bottom of my purse!)

I alternate between 2 and they're both huge! I have to have one big enough for all my normal stuff, the book that I am currently reading and a bottle of water. I wish I had weighed it when I had all the change in it, but I didn't think about it. The highest it's ever weighed when I actually weighed it was 18 lbs.

Hi Ritzy,

I usually do what you did....just get a diet coke and wait until I get home. In a pinch, I have been known to buy a sub and just eat the meat, cheese and tomatoes. I don't usually plan ahead for such an event, but I'm thinking that might be a great idea.

These were GREAT responses - and Melissa you certainly added some fun to this! I was laughing out loud! You reminded me of a lady I went to church with as a kid...she was known to have anything you needed in her purse.

Thanks, ladies! No wonder you all are doing so well - you have great suggestions all the time! ;)
