Alright! I decided to go out out the other day and risk getting mugged so I could get some pictures. The only ones I couldn`t get were the watermelon and pineapple stands, since those come out in the afternoon and I wasn`t about to take out my camera then.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04685.JPE

This is the fruit stand at the end of my block. I took this at the end of the week so it`s a bit empty (in part because I clean it out of bananas, chirimoyas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chirimoya, pacays http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/pacay.htm (Pacay), and mandarines :p )

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04686.JPE

The juice and ceviche stands right next to it.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04690.JPE
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04692.JPE

Both of these show where I get my vegetables and sometimes other fruits. What it doesn`t show is the inch of dirty water and mud at my feet.

The following show the reasons why I am one step away from being a vegetarian.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04693.JPE
The meat market. Not shown are the flies and mangy dogs.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04694.JPE

The chicken market. Not shown are the flies and the dogs.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04696.JPE

The fish market. Not shown are the flies and the SMELL. You can smell the fish market about two blocks away. The water all comes from the fish, so it`s advisable that you wear closed shoes and walk a bit before going home.

What else is new? The official scale is officially broken and the gym doesn`t look like it`s going to replace it. Here is the new official scale:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/pajueb/shared/DSC04687.JPE

It is in a crowded pharmacy and there`s a little red light under "obese" that lights up when I get on it. It also spits out this little paper that says that you are going to die if you don`t lose weight (I`m not kidding). Obviously, I will only be weighing myself once a month from now on.

Good luck to all of you and have a great week!

Thanks for the pictures! Whenever I travel Iím always fascinated by the marketplaces and where people get their food. Youíre right, that meat market is scary, I think there would me a lot more vegetarians in the states if our meat markets suddenly looked like that. The produce stands however, those are so colorful and lovely. :)

That is so crazy about the scale, I canít believe it has a red ďobeseĒ light! :dizzy: Does it ask you for your height? Iím just trying to figure out how it knows what category you fall into (immanent death, healthy as a hoarse, etc)

Interesting pictures, they remind me of when I've been in Mexico :)

Also, I am going to Chile (and on to Antarctica) at the end of the year so I am excited :) One day I will make it to Peru as well.

archy! Thanks for letting us have a visual taste of what you face!

That scale--well--I suppose it could be worse, it could have a siren and a loudspeaker... :yikes:

Those meat, chicken, fish stands... It reminds me of why it is that COOKING food is so important... argh...

Archy thanks for the pics. I was hoping there would be one of the cheese with the flies. But that's ok there were enough other simply appetizing pics, like the meat. Yeah, not looking too - yummy. I guess Steak tartare' is not too popular there. Hopefully anyway.

The scale REALLY tells you to lose weight or die? Whoa. Even my doctor never quite put it that way (although he probably should have).

Have a great week yourself Archy. Looking forward to your next post.

I really should go weigh myself and scan the little paper. It says your height, your weight, your age, severely obese and in danger of imminent death.

Shananigans - I love my corner fruit stand. It`s so clean, and even though the lady is mean, it`s better than going to the market. Especially after it rains. Yeah, there would be more vegetarians. Imagine in our hyper-clean germ-free culture if for a piece of meat you had to go to a stinky market and see which fly infested piece of meat you want in your stew. Gross. I`m so not having lunch today.

Nelie - Wow. Are you going by Valparaiso in Chile? Is it a southern only trip? Will you be hiking there? Farthest south in Chile I`ve been in Valparaiso and it was really a great city.

JayEll and Robin - Cooking? I sometimes want to spray disinfectant on my meat!

Honestly, the market place is really gross. The flies, the unwashed masses, the smell...if it wasn`t for the little corner stores I would be eating out every day, and getting fatter in the process.

KISS YOUR GROCER FOR ME!

Hi Archy!

You are better than Samantha Brown on the Travel Channel! :carrot:

Thanks for sending the pictures for us all to see!

My idea of "roughing it" is no jacuzzi, so my visor tips to you m'lady as you deal with all you need to deal with there in Peru! I DO love digging in dirt, however, yet I never found anything terribly interesting over the years in my various backyards!

I'm hoping much fresh water, a big boiling pot, and cooler weather for you. I know you got all your innoculations, but check again for me, OK?

We are about the same height and we ARE the same weight right now! Good Luck on losing those last few pounds! Mine are VERY STUBBORN, but my INCHES are more cooperative!

That is SO COOL! I soooo wish I had a fruit stand just around the corner from my house so I could get fresh fruit any ol' time I wanted!

Actually, we fly into Santiago and stay there for a while then fly down to Ushuaia, which I believe is actually Argentina. We will be doing some hiking near Ushuaia :) From there, we get on a boat and cruise to Antarctica.

The markets look a lot like the ones on the island I stayed at in Greece. This wasn't a tourist island, just a little towns. I had trouble getting over walking past a goat hanging in a doorway lol

Archy - thanks for reminding me of my stop in Lima. I've been to a lot of markets in a lot of third worlds while working as onboard artist on 2 world cruises. The dogs on spits in Vietnam were the most unusual.

That scale is a HOOT!!!

When I lived in Beijing on the campus of a large university, there was a scale in the dining hall so the girls could weigh themselves before or after a meal. I don't think it had the red light, tho!

I also loved the fruit stands in China. So good and soooo cheap.

as far as the meat is concerned I think if anyone saw how their beef was aged they would be vegetarians.. take me for example :) Well.. I eat fish but im too prissy for 3rd world countries. I may die there.

Please, please, tell me you're not indulging in this:

Frog juice in high demand in Peru

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070504/ap_on_fe_st/odd_peru_frog_juice_1

LIMA, Peru - Carmen Gonzalez plucks one of the 50 frogs from the aquarium at her bus stop restaurant, bangs it against tiles to kill it and then makes two incisions along its belly and peels off the skin as if husking corn.

She's preparing frog juice, a beverage revered by some Andean cultures for having the power to cure asthma, bronchitis, sluggishness and a low sex drive. A drink of so-called "Peruvian Viagra" sells for about 90 cents.

Gonzalez adds three ladles of hot, white bean broth, two generous spoonfuls of honey, raw aloe vera plant and several tablespoons of maca ó an Andean root also believed to boost stamina and sex drive ó into a household blender.

Then she drops the frog in.

Once strained, the result is a starchy, milkshake-like liquid that stings the throat.

At least 50 customers a day ask for steaming beer mugs of frog juice at Gonzalez's countertop-only restaurant in eastern Lima, and many treat the concoction as their morning ó and afternoon ó cup of coffee.

Rebeca Borja, a 53-year-old housewife and mother of five, originally from Lima's central highland city of Huancayo, where the beverage is common, said simply: "It gives you power."

Wow - I'm really jealous of the fresh fruits and veggies. Up here in Michigan we're just starting to get into the few months of the year when we can get really fresh produce. But the meat is a little scary...

Good luck staying healthy and safe in such a different environment :)

Ijust had two large slices of watermelon for about $0.30. Yummie!

smisen - I go to grad school in Urbana, Illinois. The absolute lack of fruit there drove me nuts. And how expensive it was! Strawberries for $3 for a tiny bit? In California I could go to a farmer`s market and get a large flat for $5!

alinell - no. The only time I have knowingly killed frogs was when one of my pits was about 3 meters deep and frogs kept on falling there and sometimes landing on my head (sometimes I slapped at them and killed them...).

We do eat guinea pig, though. It`s tasty, but fatty.

archy - I've seen pictures of the fried guinea pigs :) There used to be a program called "Lonely Planet" on the Travel channel. One episode was Peru I believe. They brought her a fried guinea pig and if memory serves, they brought it standing up :)

:lol3:

I am so jealous of your fruit stand! :tantrum: I try to buy only locally grown fruit (at my weekly farmers market and I do sometimes stretch the definition of "local"). It's fine in the summer but in the winter, the only thing available is apples. I love a nice Fuji apple, but after several months of that being just about my only fruit, I'm really ready for something different.

And if I had to buy my meat in a form that was a lot closer to how it comes off the animal, I'd probably be eating a lot less of it too! Eww. :p

Archy - The fruit stand look fabulous, but as for the meat and fish markets... OMG.. how gross!! :barf: I love to eat meat, but the thought of having flies and maggots in that meat just turns my stomach.

And the thought of eating a guinea pig is not very appetizing to me. I used to raise guinea pigs, and play with them. They make this cute little oinking noise  But we eat alot of things that people think are gross, like crawfish, alligator, frog legs, and rabbits... I guess guinea pigs are not much different than eating rabbits..

Nellie: Why on earth would you want to go to Antartica? No offense, but I think it may be beautiful to see, but just a little bit chilly for my liking.... But, you are going in summer, so maybe the weather may not be all that cold, but still. I think that would be the last place in the world I would want to go...

Alinell : Frog juice, that is disgusting... :barf: We eat fried frog legs here (I haven't eaten them in years) but the thought of eating a ground up frog... how gross!

JayEll

I tried to eat rabbit once, but couldn't... I don't know about guinea pig... I think I would feel too sad.

nelie, I understand about Antarctica! Some folks I know just went on a cruise there, and they loved it! Definitely not the tropics, but a very remote and amazing place.

I'm more of an adventure travel type of girl rather than a sit on the beach and relax type of girl. I get anxious if my vacation is well not active enough. There will be plenty of relaxation time on the cruise itself but I look forward to taking walks/hikes on Antarctica :) I am also a nature lover and I specifically love penguins. One of my goals is to visit various locations where penguins live. That means cold :) Also when I am going, there will be tons of penguin chicks, I can't wait to see the cute furry little guys.

For years, I wanted to go to patagonia and the opportunity came up a few weeks ago to go all the way to Antarctica so DH and I jumped on it. We will also get some time in the 2 cities, one chilean, the other argentinian. I am excited :)

My mom doesn't understand either. Her response was "This was your idea wasn't it? You are dragging your husband around the world to strange places and he does it to please you". She didn't like that we went to China last year :) DH is very much looking forward to this trip and we are both excited :)

It's not that i don't understand exactly.. I have seen pictures of Antarctica, and it looks really lovely in summer, when the terrain is a little thawed out... It is really beautiful. But not pretty enough to make me want to go there. It's too freakin cold!! Brrrr... Just thinking about it makes me shiver...
