Hey Everyone - I want to know if any of you have experienced this. I have PCOS and didn't have AF for about 4 years. Over the past year I have lost weight and as soon as i started losing weight she came back regularly. Well, my cycle over the past year has been about 31 - 34 days, well now I am at about 50 days in my current cycle. Have any of you experienced having a regular cycle for a long period of time and then not having a cycle again for a while. I've taken a pregnancy test just in case, and i'm not PG. Any insight you might have is appreciated.

By the way, I do workout regularly 5 - 6 days a week. If that makes a difference.

THANKS!

Hi Spunkster,
With PCOS it's never easy to figure out just what's going on. I used to have a Nurse practitioner who monitored my PCOS. Every other month we did a battery of tests (about day 3-4 after last day of AF), to monitor where the hormone levels were. It gave a great picture of just what was going on.
What I learned from that is just because you've got AF, doesn't mean you ovulate. (You probably know that.) Ovulation can be held up by a number of different things. (Therefore the accomanied hormones can be held up as well.)
You may want to look at the past 60-90 days for:
-increased chronic stress (including losing trust in someone)
-singularly stressful situation(s) (good and bad)
-potential reasons that may have changed blood sugar levels
-situations where emotions were "held in" or life changes that don't allow for emotions to come out (no longer talking with a friend as often, stopped journaling, etc)
-lack of or decrease in "touch" (hugs and handshakes are included here)

ALL of these things can sneak up and cause an internal hormone shift. Reducing stress in a workplace, or just "getting rid of personal stress" isn't always easy...but that may help.
Other things that have helped me is reducing (NOT eliminating) my "high impact" aerobics (like running) and replacing them with "softer" exercises like yoga, biking, walking, and the cross trainer. Deep tissue massage and journalling can help tremendously as well. You never know how attitudes can sneak in to our thoughts and we didn't even realize they were there or what they do to our hormones.
I hope one or two words may help you unlock the mystery of AF's disappearance.
(BTW, I had to find a really super good TCM practioner to help return my AF. But it's the real deal with ovulation and everything.)
Best of luck and please let us know how things are going.

I had a similar experience. I had a regular cycle for about two years, then five months passed and nothing. Gladly, it returned last month--I started metformin and showed up again this month on time. You are doing so well with you weight loss!! Congrats!!

Just wanted to update you...AF came after all. I guess this cycle was just really long! Thanks for the help!
