Hey, I don't know if that's the medical term for it, but it's what my uncle, my godfather, may end up having to have done. His doctor has brought it up. What does it entail, and how does it work for someone who quite frankly, refuses to exercise, and refuses to cut back on the food he eats? I'm just looking for some basic information, but I'm really worried about him. He just doesn't seem to want to do anything to improve his health, and it's scary.

Any information, or suggestions for good medical websites where I could read up on it, would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Red.

Others will be able to give you more info, but here's my take...

If he is NOT willing to cut back on the food he eats, then surgery is probably not a good option. With the surgery, he will be able to eat VERY little at first, and eating too much could make him quite ill. If he's not willing to at least try to make habit changes on his own first, I don't think he's really a very good candidate for the surgery at all, as it takes a lot of strength to go through it successfully. It's also not a forever cure--it is only a tool. If he keeps eating too much food even after the surgery, he is in danger of eventually just gaining back any weight he loses because the stomach can eventually stretch out to hold more food again.

If he refuses to do the things required to lose weight (move more and eat less), then, IMO, the surgery is pointless, because you NEED to do those things in order for the surgery to work long-term.

Anyone with more experience, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but surgery is NOT the easy way out, nor is it a cure-all for the obese.
