60 minutes elliptical.

It was hard today! I took yesterday off from the gym and thought that would give me more energy and muscle power today after a nice rest. Alas, no. But, perhaps the two things are unrelated.

Yesterday I only managed 30 mins on the elliptical and 15 jogging on the treadmill. My joints and muscles are unreasonably sore at the moment. I can't imagine why. It's the strangest thing.

Today I'm going to swim for an hour instead of using the elliptical to try to give my joints a rest.

I've had a change of plans for today. No gym; instead I took my dog for a brisk hour-long hike. It doesn't burn as many calories, but my dog needed exercise. I'm going to be playing cricket with friends later (haven't done that since I was in primary school!) and that should be worth a few calories too.

Velveteen: Thanks for your encouragement :) I've been doing an hour ont eh elliptical each day, so I felt a bit disappointed with myself for only doing 45 mins yesterday. (I forgot to bring my water bottle and I just can't exercise without drinking water).

Grrr. I've disappointed myself again. I *love* to swim, or at least, historically, I have loved to swim. I've been telling myself for years that once I get my cardio capacity up (heavy smoker issues, again), I'm going to start swimming again. Since my muscles are SOOOOOOO sore and tight at the moment (I think there's something wrong with me) I thought I'd swim today instead of my usual 60 mins elliptical. I thought I'd shoot for 60 mins and be happy with 30. I lasted *15 minutes*. I was the youngest person in the pool by at least 30 years, and I was the only one spluttering up and down with rests in between each lap. Argh! I don't even feel as though I deserve lunch after such a poor showing (though I will, of course, eat lunch).

Back on the cardio machines tomorrow...

LisaMarie71

baffled, don't be hard on yourself -- you'll get there! I'm jealous of anyone who can swim at all, because unfortunately I never learned how!

Today I did a 5-mile run. It was the first time I've run that far without walking at all. Woohoo!

baffled111
03-06-2007, 03:23 PM
Congrats Lisa Marie!

(You should take swimming lessons. Everyone should know how to swim! Even slowly and sputteringly!)

djs06
03-06-2007, 04:02 PM
Baffled, speaking as a former competitive swimmer, SWIMMING IS TOUGH CARDIO! I find it more difficult than even running. What kind of "routine" do you follow when you're swimming? I remember in my swim practices, the coach would have us do sets of decreasing lengths, with 30-45 seconds rest in between. Work your way up to it! We all start somewhere.

baffled111
03-06-2007, 04:58 PM
Dana: You are right. It is very tough cardio--very hard on the old lungs as well as on the muscles. Even so, it was a bit disconcerting being outswam by a pool full of women in their 60s and 70s!

When I was younger (and before I had decimated by lungs with 2 packs a day) I used to just jump in the pool and swim up and back for a couple of kilometers and then pop off to school. Easy as pie. This approach completely failed me today :) Swimming might not work for me as a form of exercise until I quit smoking. It's too bad. I *love* the water.

LisaMarie, I too wanted to mention the swimming lesson idea. I'm biased but I think it's just such a wonderful experience and such a good feeling to swim ;)

LisaMarie71
03-06-2007, 09:30 PM
I definitely plan to take swimming lessons eventually -- when I have time, when I can stand the thought of someone seeing me in a swimsuit, when I have money, etc...haha. Seriously, I will. I'm kind of excited about the prospect actually, so I may start them this summer when I'm off.

djs06
03-06-2007, 10:11 PM
Baffled, OMG the older ladies in the pool are a hoot! I love to watch them go.. and yeesh, do they put me to shame! You'll be able to do it soon enough :)

Lisamarie, my girlfriend doesn't know how to swim either, I keep telling her I'm going to have to teach her this summer. She insists that I can *try* but no one has been able to successfully teach her yet  I highly recommend taking lessons as well! It's a fun thing to do, and great exercise of course.

Tonight I did 35 min elliptical and 25 min high incline treadmill. I'm surprised I lasted even that long.. I had a crappy time from the second I got there and couldn't just zone out like I usually do. It really dragged tonight! Oh well.

Ilene

baffled -- don't be so hard on yourself and swimming... Took me 2 years to get the hang of it, now I can do lap after lap... Before I could only do 1 and half lap and then die :faint: ... Keep at it it's like anything else, practice makes perfect... I took triathlon swimming lessons ( basically it was just doing lap, after lap, after lap, after lap  ) last year, I'm 50 BTW, I was the worse one in the class, but I had a great time... So Baffled and Lisa Marie you should both take lessons... I feel sooooo relaxed after swimming, I sleep like a baby... My g/f and I discovered that if we run just before swimming we have a much better swimming session, we both find that our lungs feel open and we seem to breath better, maybe that's something to try ...

Speaking of swimming, I swam for 30 mins :swim: tonight, ran for 20 mins on the :tread: before hand and weight trained 45 mins this morning :strong: .... It's all good :D ...

Recognizing that I haven't had enough time to fit in 3 strength workouts a week, I designed a new program this work to do entire body strength with combo movements. i figure if I do this twice a week, it won't be quite as good as two UBs and a LB, but it will be as close as I can commit to right now...also, I can do the whole thing at home, which means I can squeeze it in twice on my lunch breaks and don't have to be at the gym until 9.

4 Sets of Each, except ballet kick series:

1. Squats with Hammer Curls (12x)
2. Lunges with Shoulder Raises (10x per side)
3. Deadlifts with Standing Row (12x)
4. One Leg Balance with Tricep Kickback (10x per side)
5. Ballet Kick Series (Yoga Booty Ballet) (entire series, 2 sets only)
6. Crunches with ball (20x)
7. Bicycle Crunches (15x)
8. Plank (30sec)

LisaMarie71
03-08-2007, 08:04 PM
That looks like a great plan, mandalinn! The instructor of the bodysculpting class I attend is all about the squat/curl combo.

Tonight: 2 mile run and 1 mile walk on the treadmill (speed intervals in the run)

mandalinn82
03-08-2007, 08:24 PM
I've never really done the combo movements before but I feel like it did something, and its better than not getting in any arm workouts at all during the week (bad!).

Any feedback on it (other than that from the lovely LisaMarie) is appreciated.

Looks good Mandalinn. Those planks are killer!! the first time my trainer showed me I thought he was nuts, and then I almost died.

What's a deadlift? I can't picture it.

How long does the whole set take you? Great new avatar btw.

60 min DDR tonight (i never know how the heck to log that in fitday.. so i put low impact aerobic... sounds about right. i'm definitely not working as hard as i would be on the treadmill or elliptical and the calories burned according to fitday reflects that)

Yesterday it took me almost an hour to get through the whole thing, and BOY, am I sore today.

I found the straight leg deadlift/standing row on About.com, actually, while searching for compound moves. http://exercise.about.com/library/blholidaystrength.htm Deadlifts with Row
Stand with feet hip-width apart holding weights in front of thighs. Keeping abs in and back straight, tip from the hips and lower the weight down (skimming the legs) as low as your flexibility allows (bend knees a bit if you need to). Squeeze glutes and hamstrings to come up and then lower back down until torso is parallel to the floor, turn the hands so that they're parallel and pull the weights up in a row contracting the lats. Repeat, alternating deadlifts and rows for all reps.

When my trainer first introduced me to the plank, he had me do it on a bosu. I think I lasted about 10 seconds. Then he said "ok, you can't hold it there...just do as many pushups as you can". I did one, went down for the second, and face-planted right on the corner of the bosu. My trainer is a NUT for planks and plank-variations - planks to work your chest, planks to work your triceps, planks on a bosu, planks on a medicine ball, plank/pushup on bosu supersets....

mandalinn82
03-09-2007, 10:40 AM
He's perfect for me, he isn't -too- hard. He listens if I say something seems too hard - but he has this innate sense of where my breaking point is, and other than that initial faceplant (to which he replied "now THAT is what we call "working to failure"), he's been right on to make my planks incredibly challenging, but not impossible.

Shelly, I try to incorporate exercise into just a daily thing I have to do, like showering or brushing my teeth. It seems to work for me better that way. After a few weeks, I'd feel guilty for missing a session. If you have to ease yourself into it, do that! Every little bit helps.

LisaMarie71
03-21-2007, 09:00 PM
Two classes at the gym tonight! Step aerobics and bodysculpting -- a total of an hour and 45 minutes.

I thought the step class would be hard, because the instructor said it was intermediate (and there were complicated combos in her routine), but apparently running has SERIOUSLY built up my cardio endurance. I found myself having to jump around and use my arms a LOT to feel like I was getting a workout even though people around me, who always take the class, were sweating and panting like mad. Woohoo!

Hi,

I took a rest day yesterday. My back was acting up.

Today's workout:

Turbo Jam Kickin Core-fun! Chalene's cueing was better in this one, and the pace was less frantic

Yoga Zone-Yoga for a Strong and Healthy Back

I may do some stretching later.

Take care,
Sherry

I'm having a day of rest. I seem to be having some minor shin splint isues, so I am icing and resting today. The bf is doing some yard work tomorrow, so I will take that time to get some cardio in. I liked someones advice on here to not have 2 day's in a row(or more) of rest. Maybe this way it won't be so hard getting back in the groove. ;)

:woops: :strong: :lifter: :dust: Thanks everyone!!!

Ilene: I actually ran my first 5k back in October. My time then was 29:46. Right now I am following a 10 week 1/2 marathon training program I found online. My sister and I are planning to run a 1/2 marathon at Disneyland in September. I am really pumped about it! My "long" runs will be on saturdays and tomorrow is my first. I will try for 4 miles. I am starting the training plan now so that way i have a time to adjust and work on my pace and distance before the actual run.

Amy: Just stick with it!! I know you can do it - its hard work, but well worth it in the end!! Someone posted a ton of quotes in the 20-somethings support group yesterday and this one is my favorite...when i start to get tired when running I repeat to myself "the only one that can stop me is me...and i can take her." I also repeat the quote in my signature to myself when i want to quit.

Good job to everyone! Keep up the hard work!

Here's my exercise for yesterday:

Ran 3 miles: 28:54
1 hr: Lift class at the gym

I started my new weight training regimen today. I'm not excited about it. I ran for 5 mins, worked my arms and lower back, then did 45 mins elliptical.

Btw, someone told me that doing a small amount of cardio (say 5 mins of running or the rowing machine) prior to lifting helps to burn more calories while doing the lifting. Does that sound feasible to anyone? It definitely can't hurt--but can it help?

It is good to warm up for 5 minutes before weight training but I have never heard that it burns more calories while doing the lifting... Why are you not excited about your new routine?

I think I had an exercise NSV today. We were playing with a blood pressure machine. My resting (well, hanging around atlking with the girls) pulse was 60. A doctor noticed and said I must be an athlete with a nice low pulse like that :D
