I did do it for a month and a half or so. I thought it was an unthreatening environment, and quick enough that I wouldn't get discouraged. But, the hours weren't good for me (only open 8 - 6 M - F, and I worked 9 - 6!), so I stopped going. Then I broke my leg and had no chance of going! Now that I have been approaching weight loss seriously for the past three months, I wouldn't rejoin. I guess my reasons are that I prefer to exercise at home and that I like the flexibility to exercise at 11 pm or to do different types of exercise, depending on what strikes my fancy. I suggest trying out the free week option before you decide anything.

I have a friend that has gone to Curves for months. She has lost many inches and enjoys the atmosphere.
I, personally, haven't tried it, simply because the nearest location is about 20 minutes each way. So, with work and the classes I take, I'd rather wait until there is a closer location.
My mother's best friend has just opened a new location in New York and absolutely adores the system, as well as company in general.
I think they have a situation where you are able to try it out, without having to pay for the year. So, you might want to try it for a week to see if it is something that you would like to continue.

I joined my local Curves the day she opened for business - one year ago this coming Tuesday.
The girls there have become a big family - and we're all getting together for a big anniversary celebration - work the circuit, then go eat cake!!! :)
Anyway... As far as "my" gym goes, you can commit to a 1-year contract for a lesser monthly fee, or pay $10 more and "pay as you go," to give you a chance to try it out.
I was doing WW for 6 months before joining Curves. I found that my $$ was better spent on the gym than on the weekly meetings - but that's just me. I've stuck with WW all this time, and am very satisfied with the results. And, with Curves, I've been able to really "tone up" in areas that haven't been that way in a LONG time - if ever!!
Your local center will probably allow you to try it out with a free workout, before you commit. Right now - new members are getting the first month's memberships free, but not sure how long that's lasting.

Didn't see this post before, but we just got a Curves open here in Clinton,Missouri. I joined last night. Hope it does as good for me as it has for some of you.:) have a feeling it will just getting out for 45 min, a night that would be great, being here at home all day watching kids talking to kids and getting out and being able to talk to a person a female!!!! And exercise at the same time.:dizzy:

never used curves. but i just have to say that the name makes me think of some brand of maxi pad or a bra or something.
the only ladies only gyms i've seen here are the linda evans ones.

I did join Curves. It is a womans only sort of health club. There are nautilus machines that are hydraulic (no switching weights). I think there are 10 machines that work different muscles in your body. You do a machine for 30 seconds to some cool music and then you are on a station where you can jog in place or dance to the music for 30 seconds and then switch to the next machine. It is a 30 minutes work out and then you do stretches after you are done. I really sweat and like it a lot. I love getting out of the house for 1 hour for this. My girlfound joined and the first month she lost 10 pounds and 8 inches and didn't really change her eating habits.

I just joined Curves last night & had my workout. Have you checked it out ? I think it is great. You change activities every 35 seconds, so you don't have time to get bored.
Anyway, I am located in SC. I paid a $49 one time membership fee, then it's $29 a month by bank draft, or you can pay $39 a month on a pay as you go.

Good Day Y'all. I was happy to see that there are others on these boards using Curves as your form of exercise. I joined 3 weeks ago when the curves in my town first opened. I'm really enjoying it ALOT. I go every day in the morning except Sat, and Sun. I haven't had my first monthly weigh in and measurements done......but I know that theres been a gr8 difference in the way I feel as well as the way I look. I can hardly wait to see what I've actually lost. Is everyone out there still enjoying curves????? I'll update y'all after I get my weigh in done. talk to you soon!!!

I gave Curves a try. Parts of it were nice. Non-threatening environment and stuff. But, it was really expensive. And frankly, the tapes they play are mostly remixed motown, and they play it over and over until it's ingrained in your very soul. Terrible music. In the end I quit because of the money and because no one at my branch seemed interesting in making friends. Ah well. Tis not the falling down we call failing, but the staying down.

I joined to help a friend of mine who has almost 150 lbs to lose stay motivated and to GO there 3-5 times a week.
First of all, I must say that this club and the women there are very very supportive of my friend and I like that a lot. Second, even though I have been doing INTENSE weight training and cardio, I think that Curves gives you a good workout especially if you pump it up on the "recovery" stations. I go around about a circuit and a half and can't believe how much I'm sweating. I feel it later too. I think it's a neat place. I am sure that sometimes this club will get crowded but right now it's a very intimate supportive little place where you can get a good workout in about a half hour. Curves is cool beans. :D

Therese ~ I just wanted to comment on the music... our Curves plays a selection of remixed music... oldies, motown, country, top 40... it is all up to the owners what music they buy. Same with the friendliness of the people there... varies quite a bit from place to place!
As for the expense, it's well worth it to me, as it's the only workout I've ever done faithfully! ;) I've been going for about 15 months now!

Hi! I joined Curves a month ago. I LOVE it! This is the first exercise program I can actually stick with!

I am so glad to see other people like Curves so much. I joined in November but then broke my tailbone and now after 3 months can finally sit down again without severe pain. A Curves opened up 3 miles from my house so 4 of us girls go every other night as our time away from our kids and husbands. It is so much fun. As far as the music goes ours plays a variety of everything. If you don't like what is playing she will change the tape. I am going to try to go 5 times a week now that my butt is better. I joined Curves yesterday and went back today. I love it! I find it very non-threatening and non-intimidating. I am about 80-90 lbs overweight so if I can do this, anyone can! I can go at my own pace. I can feel muscles that I didn't even know I had!

I'm a Curves junkie too. I had my 2nd "weigh-in" last night.
The first month I lost a total of 7 3/4 inches & 0.5% body fat.
This month I lost an additional 3 inches & 1.5% body fat.
I really enjoy this work out. It is so fast & easy.

I am starting a new job in the village where the Curves is, and I think it will work better for me this time. I enjoyed the workouts a lot, but the timing was off for sure. I got off work at 1 and arrived at 1:15, with the place closing from 1:30 til 2:30 daily to clean. I had to either run errands daily, or go home and then return, which didn't work for me. Once I got home, I wanted to stay there. I will work til 2:30 daily with this new job, so I think the timing will be ok. I enjoyed the atmosphere, too. I have a friend that has gone faithfully for the year and has lost about 3 sizes. She hasn't lost all that much weight considering her size reduction, but she is definitely in good shape compared to where she was. I envy her determinationt to stick it out. I am just as fat and sassy as I was when I started, due to quitting. NOT A GOOD THING, huh? anyway, I am going to ask them if I can re-join without paying the $75 I had to pay to join in the first place. WOW, That is alot, huh? Well, I work out at home, too. I use a glider mostly, with a air walker and a exercise bike, (moveable handlebars). SO with the 3 things here, and the workouts there, I should do ok. I just got a clean bill of health from the Mayo clinic and I don't have any brain anuerysm as I feared I might have. My sister just died Valentine's Day with multiple rutures and bleeds! 3rd family member with this, so I was afraid myself. LOSING weight is a priority for me. I hope to find support here on the 3 fat chicks. I see you all are in several threads listed, so I will probably get to know you all soon. kurly;)

Sounds like it will work better for you with the new job. I am really enjoying Curves and hoping that I can stick with it. I am giving myself until Monday to get used to the exercise part of life and then I am starting a new way of eating. For this week, I am just trying to watch portion sizes, stay away from junk food etc. I haven't decided what kind of eating plan I will follow, but I definetely need something in addition to exercise. We are adopting a baby, hopefully by Sept and I want to be as fit and healthy as I can be.
I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your sister. My Mom passed away last April and I am still grieving her. Loss is never easy to deal with.

My F-i-l and Mom died one week apart from each other in 2000, then my uncle died two weeks later, then hubby's uncle died after that, then his mother one month later! Toni is #6 in the family. I am real tired of this death thing! Really, I am ready to live and enjoy life. I pray there won't be anything traumatic for the rest of this year. I am focusing on me losing weight once again. I let stress and emotional upheaval take its toll on my dieting and learning how to eat healthy. I have relied on comfort foods for too long. IT is terrible how I let myself gain so much weight back. I had worked so hard even during 5 years of critical care for hubby's folks. I did 45 min on my glider after lunch today. I was real happy. SO, until I can get to Curves to talk to them about my re-joining, ( have to wait til the new job starts mid April ) I am doing my best to work out here at home. I had a good eating day, and am pleased with my water in take as well. GOOD day here...... kurly

Wow, kurly...I'm so sorry for your losses. I admire your determination to "live and enjoy life." You have seen a lot of death, so you must realize that each day is a gift that we must make the most of!
I would say call the Curves place that you plan to re-join and explain your situation...I would imagine they would be reasonable and welcome you back!
I called my place today, not sure when they closed on Saturdays...it was 11:15 when I called, I was told they close around 11:30, but she told me to come on down, she'd keep the place open for me! I politely protested, saying that it would take me at least 15 min to get there, and she told me that's OK, I don't want you to miss your workout! Her kindness AND the fact that I could work out really made my day! :D
This was my fourth workout since joining on Tuesday...I love it and I feel great! I'm hoping they will open one nearer to my home and the owner is actually scouting places around my area...yay!
So count me in as a BIG Curves fan...

The closest Curves to me is in Annapolis (about 45 minutes away)! One of these days, maybe someone will get their head straight and open one up in D.C.

My heart goes out to you with all that you have experienced lately. Hopefully things will take a turn for the better soon.
My Curves has a new piece of equipment. We have a new ab machine. I've gotten instructions on how to use it, but today will be the first workout with it. I'm excited about being able to do more to tone this area.

How do you count activity points for your Curves workout? I just got my activity slide yesterday and counted 3 points for my workout. What do you think?

I don't know where you live in MD but there is a Curves in College Park and one in Bowie (off Annapolis Road). I went to the one in College Park (a bit out of my way) and they have a $75 initial fee with $39.00 monthly if you sign up for a year. It's $49 a month if you go month to month.

I work REALLY HARD, and count 4 activity points ...and I'm sure that I earn every single one!

Hello.. no ones posted on this thread for a while. i was wondering if anyone has tried curves lately. I get bored so quickly with different exercise programs but i thought i could do this. Only 30 mins a day at least 3 days a week. what i liked was she measured my whole body and i go back in 30 days and she'll remeasure me. I've been on a diet forever and no ones ever measured me (scary to see those numbers in black & white) http://www.emotipad.com/emoticons/Thud.gif I've gone about 5 times and so far i love it.

Mackie, i've gone for about the same and i can feel the difference.. the machings seem so much easier for me to you i am looking forward to being measured again. I'm hoping for some real improvment. I'll tell you tho, i've only heard great things about curves.. and everyone who goes loses inches.. :)

I joined Curves toward the end of June. The weight is starting to slowly come off. I think my clothes feel a little looser. It will be interesting to see how it comes out when they measure me. I haven't been able to get there only 2 times a week so far ~ because of work schedule, hoping for three this week.
I like it so far ~ always leave with a good feeling of having done something good for myself.

I joined Curves in the middle of June and have been able to go 3 times a week. I missed one week for vacation and when I returned I vowed to go at least 4 times a week! Right now it's easy to do as I am off work for the summer (teacher's aide) .
I love it, it goes fast and I feel like I've done some work (I sweat!) I think I am going to put my monthly weigh/measure in off for another week to make up for the week I missed so I will let you know how it goes.
If you're considering joining you should be able to do a "free" week to check it out ...there is a bouchure that gives you a coupon to do that. (At least at the Curves I attend) It gives you a chance to see if it's something you would like before you commit.

I am down 2 more inches and 1 lb from last month...and .4% body fat....it's slowly but surely coming off...I am doing a mixtore of Curves 3 times a week, and Pilates 3-4 times a week...
I am also taking Xenedrine EFX (only half the dose...1 pill, 2 times a day)....
I figure that something HAS to work! ;) and so far...it is :)

I just finished my first month at Curves and I am down 1 lb., 4.75 inches and .4% body fat. I'm happy with that particularly since I haven't been watching what I eat and Curves 3x/wk and a 30 min. walk/run twice is week is all the exercise I've been doing. If I could just get the food under control again I could make even better progress.
