Default Shoes

So I've been really good about my jogging lately, but I've found that as I've increased my time, my feet (esp toes) totally fall asleep! My dad suggested a foot insert, but it didn't seem to help (of course, it might have been that I got a cheapie insert) and to try and not just run on my toes, make sure my heel is hitting down.

THen I did the math, and my shoes are (agh) SIX years old. Hmm....time for some new shoes, I think! So, what do I look for in a pair of shoes? Any recommended brands, types, etc. TIA!

I would go to an actual running store. The people there will have you hop on a treadmill or just run around the store a couple times and they'll watch your foot placement, look for pronation etc. and they'll tell you the best kind of shoe you should get. Extra support, medium arch etc. They can be a bit more expensive at the stores sometimes, but I think it's worth it. And you can always just see what they suggest, and then go buy them elsewhere if it's really high.

If you're using their services, it's pretty rude to go and buy somewhere else. IME though the specialty shops don't mark up any more than the chains.

Bring your old shoes to the store with you.

I know this sounds simple- but Nike- I have a great pair of running shoes from Nike. Also- if you are very overweight, go to a running shoe store. There they will have shoes for running especially for heavy people who spread their weight differently over the shocks. You will be RELIEVED how much better they make you feel.
