My 21 year old son had fasting insulin bloodwork done and it came back high in the range and the doc wants to put him on 500 mgs of Glucophage - once in the evenings for a week, then one twice a day after that which would be 1000 mgs daily.
He and I both have thyroid problems and each of us take 5 grains daily of Armour Thyroid.
Just curious if we have others here that are Insulin Resistant and/or that are taking Glucophage or Metformin for that or their diabetes and their experiences with it. Any side effects? how do you feel on it?
Oh I did find them helpful. thanks!
someone suggested that I post the question here so I did. just wanted to catch everyone that I can.
but I really appreciate the input.
thanks,
Cathy
Hi Cathy,
I've been taking 2000 mg Metformin daily for almost 3 years. I take it in the morning and at dinner, and I haven't had any side effects at all. Good luck!
Hi im rosey.. i take 2000 mg of glucophage extened release every evening after dinner.. i have been on this for 5+ yrs now and have had no side affects except lower sugar levels..hope this helps.. rosey
I've been taking 2000 mg. of Glucophage for several years. There are sometimes gastrointestinal side effects with the generic metformin (I have a problem so I take the brand name) but most people seem to tolerate. There may be some gassy effects, especially with sauerkraut or the cruciferous vegs, but it's mild. The best part of Glucophage is that unlike other diabetes medications, it doesn't cause weight gain.
I too take Metformin XR, 2 500mg pills with dinner nightly. It doesn't upset the tummy at all. When I was first diagnosed (about 8 months ago now) the doctor had me on 750mg 3x daily and I was so incredibly sick with intestinal issues (the O_O and run kind) that I stopped taking the meds all together.. I'm back on the Metformin as of two months ago and along with Byetta (which upsets my tummy some) I'm doing pretty well.
I was on 1500 mg a day and my nutritionist had me up it to 2000 since that's the highest effective dose (per her) and will help with weight loss (also per her).
I promptly got "knocked up" so I don't know if it would have helped the weight or not. I had some issues adjusting to it the first week or two but now it's fine.
I got a script friday-500 and felt kind of odd , too two Sat and felt spacey, supper sleepy, dizzy, weavy. Last time I felt that weird was in the hospital.
So I'm not taking it anymore. I can double what I'm on Glucotol XL so I'm doing that till I talk to the doctor. You have to watch for lactic acidosis. Get a PDR book and read up on what you're taking-helps.
I'm on 500 mg morning and evening. I've been on it for a month and it still has my stomach messed up. I think the only reason I'm losing weight now is everything I eat leaves pretty quickly.lol It also doesn't seem to be making that big of a difference with my BG levels. I have an appointment on june 28 so I will ask her about it then.
