Default Getting rid of "fat" clothes

People always say that after you lose weight you should get rid of your "fat" clothes as motivation not to regain. Has anyone done that? How did it work for you? I wish I had confidence enough to do it.

Speaking as one who is 54 years old and yoyo'd for many years, I never threw away my fat clothes and I do feel it really was a mistake. Now I am having my best success with weight loss and those fat clothes are out the door as soon as they no longer flatter. Having to go out and buy bigger sizes really makes me think twice before letting my weight situation get so far our of hand. Plus, getting rid of those clothes really reinforces that feeling of metamorphosis into something new and better. Good Luck! BJ

I've done it both ways and getting rid of clothes is a better way to go. I bag mine up and take them to Goodwill as soon as they are too baggy to wear to work (I'd wear baggy clothes all the time at home if I could). I just cleaned out my closet of anything that was bigger than a 16 and it felt great, very motivating!

Once it gets too big, it's out of my closet! I don't want to make it easy if I start regaining any of the weight back. I offer my old clothes on freecycle (www.freecycle.org) and have more requests for them than I can possibly answer. I just plain don't want to see the big old clothes in my closet anymore.

I'm moving, so it was a good opportunity to get rid of clothes. I haven't been able to wear a lot of the stuff for at least a year, so might as well give it to someone who needs the stuff. I took 2 garbage bags of clothes to the Salvation Army last week. I think it will be true that I'll be less likely to gain the weight back with the clothes gone! Definitely don't keep them...unless you're ok with gaining the weight back!

I held on to mine for awhile but decided is was best to let them go. Now, they are gone as soon as they start getting too baggy to wear. The one exception was one shirt and one pair of jeans that I did keep to remind myself where I came from.

I have emptied my closet at least 3 times. Get rid of things when they are too big. I repeat, do not keep them! You know how most people have a certain size that they won't go above? In other words, when those get too tight, they KNOW it's time to do something? As you lose weight, you HAVE to get a new set point -- your new, smaller clothes. Good luck! I haven't done this yet, but I'm planning to give my suits to Dress For Success -- one of the major things they do is provide appropriate interview clothing to less fortunate women.
