Morning,

I have to food shop this afternoon and will give it a go starting tomorrow. After food shopping I plan on making some red lentil and carrot soup. Have to modify it a bit for phase I but will have that on hand in containers for the week.

Like both your menus. I really haven't made a formal menu for myself yet but as I think of something I add it to my shopping list. So far I know I will be making the soup.

I'm also thinking of a mock risotto. Saute diced veggies in a light broth and add that to brown rice.

Good luck everyone.

I am starting today too, my book is in the mail and should be in tonight :carrot:

Seeing your menus for today, I obviously didnt bring enough food with me to work today. So tonight I will get on track with making a menu and planning better. Yesterday I went shopping for fruits and veggies, and you know it was weird only going to the produce isle!

Starting today again for Phase 1. Oatmeal for breakfast...cooking up a big batch of brown rice (I make it with low sodium chicken broth instead of water, gives it a better flavor) so that I can use it over the next couple of days. Also love smoothies with plain yogurt, small banana, frozen strawberries and some fresh squeezed OJ and some ice. Yummy.

 Pam, I find shopping goes a lot faster now that I've switched to whole foods, and this diet (at least phase 1) is going to be even easier. And cheaper! I went to the farmers market Saturday and bought a lot of produce for just a few bucks.

I'm getting a late start on making my brown rice today. I'm going to try a tip someone else posted, that was from Cooks Illustrated magazine.

FOOLPROOF OVEN-BAKED BROWN RICE
1-1/2 cups long-, medium- or short-grain brown rice
2-1/3 cups water
2 teaspoons butter or vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 375 F and move a rack to the middle position. Spread the rice into an 8-inch square, glass baking dish. In a covered saucepan on the stove, bring the water and butter or oil to a boil over high heat. Once it begins to boil, stir in the salt and pour over the rice. Cover the baking dish tightly with a double layer of foil. Bake for one hour, until tender. Remove from the oven and uncover. Fluff the rice with a fork, cover with a clean kitchen towel; let rice stand 5 minutes. Uncover for another 5 minutes, then serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

Morning Everyone,

Well today is my first day. I did food shopping yesterday afternoon and I am set.

Just weighed and measured myself. I knew things were getting tight but had a bit of a shock when there it was that woman looking back at me in the mirror. She was naked and I didn't like what I saw. :censored:

Off to a good start this morning compared to other mornings. Just finished a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon and fresh blueberries.

Have a good one today.

I don't think he specified a limit. But what I personally plan to do is measure out 1/2 cup whenever I have any type of bean or legume since they can pack a lot of calories.

Hope that helps :)

Sorry for being a pest with questions, I am just hoping someone here knows a bit more about this plan then I do : ) What about Splenda? Can we use it on phase 1? I just ate my oatmeal with apple chunks and cinnimon, I didn't care for it, so Blah tasting, I mean I CAN eat it, I just don't enjoy it without Splenda.
Thanks for the help:?:

Suzanne 3FC
08-22-2006, 11:59 AM
From what I understand, we can have up to 2 tablespoons worth of Splenda per day on Phase 1 if we have to. I'm using it. I also can't take the oatmeal plain, though I am making an effort to make it less sweet than I'm used to. A lot of people love plain oatmeal with fruit, so I guess it's an acquired taste, lol. I just have to train my tastebuds to appreciate less sweetness.

IlostIT4ever
08-22-2006, 12:12 PM
Well that's a relief, I wasn't sure if I could stomach the taste of plain oatmeal again LOL, I think I will still add the fruit and maybe a 1/2 packet of Splenda, since I don't add it to my teas I don't think a 1/2 packet will hurt anything..Thanks for replying so quickly, I was about to get bummed out LOL

Well I have to say, so far I am enjoying this way of eating. I am only on day 2 and withdrawls from pop and sugary foods havent been bad at all.

I did have a headache last night, but when I reviewed my fit day log, I had only consumed about 600 calories, since I didnt bring enough food to work. So for today I planned a little better and just got done with lunch and I am suppose to have my afternoon snack, but really I am not hungry in the least....which I cant believe!

I know what you mean, I had rice and a salad planned for lunch, but by the time I ate a cup of rice I was full, so I passed on the salad until later on...Just in case you need a little more flovor to your rice or soup I added abut 1/2 tsp of Maggie liquid seasoning to it, and MAN it was so good..Their are no calories or fat in the seasoning but the sodium is high so beware of that...It sounds like your off to a good start.. Way to go.:carrot:

I'm enjoying today more than yesterday, lol. I'm learning to add things for more flavor so that I don't end up with a bowl of something that just tastes like brown rice, lol. I really need good, deep flavors to make me enjoy a diet plan. Otherwise, I move on to another plan

Today I improvised with lunch and was very happy with the results. I had a bottle of Seeds of Change brand roasted red pepper vinaigrette. It's a naturally low fat, all natural dressing, so it's allowed. I combined 1 1/2 Tbsp of it with 1 Tbsp plain yogurt and poured it over my cup of cold brown rice. I added chopped onions and tomatoes, and chopped fresh spinach. It was seriously delicious

I'll investigate the Maggie seasoning, thanks for the tip!

Pam, I find that fruit smoothies really satisfy my sweet tooth. I just combine frozen berries with yogurt and milk, and add a little splenda to tame the tartness. These days I also add a tablespoon of ground flax seeds to gain the benefits of omega oils and fiber, plus it adds a slightly nutty flavor to the mix.

It all sounds delicious :) I agree that this will make us more creative cooks! We'll have to be if we're going to eat this much brown rice every day

I also plan to subsitute other whole grains from time to time. Eating Well has a recipe for an interesting quinoa stuffed pepper that sounds good and just needs a tiny bit of tweaking to fit in. I'd also like to make some kind of flavorful stuffing for portabello mushrooms.

Hi Ladies,

Well yesterday was day one. Not bad. I really wasn't hungry but I usually am not the first 2 days. It's after that that I get cravings.

As many of you have said you have to find creative ways to make the limited selections enjoyable. I'm going to try and experiment with a veggie bean burger I used to make. But it calls for bread crumbs to bind it together. I will try and add a little oatmeal instead.

Another thing is the scale. I tend to want to jump on that thing every two minutes when I am losing weight. I am not going to get on it until day 9 is over. On No! I have to wait 8 more days!

D: rice with steamed veggies along with a side salad

exercise: I'm taking both my girls for a walk in the double stroller. 30 minutes here I come! LOL

Good morning, sounds like this is really working..I haven't got on the scale, but this is only dat 2 for me, I think I will do like Dr Smith says and not weigh until my 9 days are up..SO happy your already happy with the scale Linda, you go girl...Tell us how your veggie burger turns out, I am starting a menu book of the different recipes, because I know throughout my life I will need to fall back on phase 1...Today's breakfast is 3 egg whites, and melon,1 cup of green tea and for snack I'll have yogurt, for lunch, left over veg soup, and an apple, and for snack another yogurt, dinner is a stuffed green bell pepper with brown rice and beans, and onions, mushrooms, and yellow bell peppers, I am adding some taco spice to my beans, and a salad, and maybe some frozen grapes for a later snack. Wishing everyone the best of luck on their journey to better health.

Day 3 of Phase 1 - I am not hungry at all today - I couldnt even finish my oatmeal or my snack. I hope I am not getting sick.

I have had no "flushing of the bowels" either, which I thought I would since I am eating so many more veggies and fruit. My headache is gone, I really upped the amount of water I am drinking and I think that is keeping me better hydrated.

I know its only been 3 days but I still havent had any serious cravings and have not cheated at all. I too like to step on the scale daily and tonight when I get home I am going to ask my hubby to hide it until day 9. The other thing that I have noticed is my skin is starting to glow - I think I finally found a plan that details moderation for me and will be a life plan for me.:carrot:

Still doing great. Went out to lunch with my girls (2 and almost 5) and had a GREAT lunch. No snacking on their lunches either! I'm so proud of myself. It takes me a lot to hold back from snacking on their plates!!!

Oh goodness.. I'm so glad to have found this thread! I'm on day 2 of phase 1. So far so good. Some things I'm improvising a little though.. I'm still logging my food because I'm afraid I'll go crazy on the fruits, even though Dr. Smith says you don't have to count calories. Second, I'm not changing my work out routine, even though he says not to add in weight training till later.

So far today I've had...
Meal #1: Marinated tofu, brown rice, and stir "fried" veggies, a peach
Meal #2: Marinated tofu, zucchini, tomatoes, and brown rice
I'm still really full feeling, but the plan is to have stir fried cabbage when I get home and probably some low fat yogurt. When I get home from the gym, I'll probably have a pear.

I have a question.. what about fat free cottage cheese? I'd much rather have that than low fat yogurt, but I don't remember him saying anything about it.

Day 3 and still dealing with a headache, but it is better today. I have to admit I have not done any cardio the past 3 days...does walking the mall and grocery shopping count:^:

So far today:
Oatmeal, 1 peach
brown rice, black beans, tofu
watermelon
edamame

Dinner will probably be brown rice with sauteed zuchinni and portabello mushroom. I will also make a smoothie too. Even though we are not required to count calories, I need to make sure I stay over 1200, otherwise I will just mess up my metabolism even more!!!
I plan to do the cardio tomorrow. I know once I start I will get motivated and know that it will help me drop more pounds! The headache is just frustrating...I am so tempted to have a cup of coffee but I won't. :coffee2:

I am nervous... sounds like food I don't normally buy and so now I have to figure out how to find these things and I have to plan ahead which is my problem... and that's part of why I have this extra weight. I will check back here when my book comes and I officially start. Good luck everyone!! :)

Everyone sounds like it is going great. And the losses so far are impressive. Good Job!

This is day 3 for me. So far so good. I find I am not as hungry as I thought I might be. That's good.

Keep wanting to get on the scale but promised myself I would wait until day 9 is over. That's almost as bad as giving up chocolate.

Happyface, the foods are different for me, too. Well I do eat a lot of vegetables and whole grains, but I've never been a fan of brown rice so it's taking some getting used to. I'm happy so far. Happy enough :p Plus seeing the success stories of our friends here really keeps me motivated.

Buttercup, I don't think you'll have a problem staying over 1200 calories. I added up the basics (oatmeal, brown rice, skim milk, yogurt, egg whites) and it came to 1018 calories and 68 g protein. From there we add the fruit, veggies, salad dressing, etc. An average day would include about 1500 calories, and everyone is losing weight :)

I bought a box of Morningstar Farms black bean veggie burgers. I think the guidelines are to avoid the ones with cheese and/or breadcrumbs, so we'll have to inspect the ingredient labels no matter what brand we choose. I'm partial to Morningstar Farms products :)

As a kid I used to eat white rice that way and it was so good, so I thought I would try it with the brown...I have found that we have to get creative LOL

Let me know how your breakfast turns out :) When we were little, Mom would make bowls of white rice with sugar, butter, and raisins. It was so good! But as an adult, I've never cared for rice, even white rice. But I'm determined to make this work :)

Today I took two portabello mushrooms and drizzled them with Solera sherry vinegar and roasted them in the oven. I made a stuffing with brown rice, dried fire roasted tomatoes and a variety of other seasonings, then stuffed the mushrooms and heated them through. It was pretty good. It would have been a lot better with a little freshly shaved parmesan cheese on top :p

I agree, we have to get creative to make this work  Have you ever tried the exotic rices from Lotus Foods? www.lotusfoods.com I have the red rice and like it. I also have the black rice, but haven't tried it yet. I might do that for dinner tonight.

Tomorrow I'm going to replace quinoa for some of the daily rice. The author says it's ok. I have a recipe for quinoa stuffed bell peppers (Eating Well magazine) that sound delicious.

I am still eating bean soup - I made way to big of a batch and it will run out on Friday.

I am having a hard time getting more than 60 oz of wtr in. I just feel incredibly full all the time....it must be all the fiber.

As for exercise, I havent added it in yet, but plan on doing a core workout a little later today. This morning I cleaned all the bedrooms, bathrooms, and I even belly crawled under the boys bunkbed (now that was a workout) to clean up toys they were hiding.

Looks like everyone is doing good with the plan. I am so happy we have each other to support

My roommate asked me yesterday how I wasn't hungry on this diet and it is hard to explain why, but it is really filling and satisfying. Plus, I think cutting out a lot of the junky foods has cut down my cravings big time. I'm still having a hard time thinking of ways to season my veggies. It seems like once I find something I like, I get tired of it really quickly.
I'd like to find out which veggie burgers count as well. I guess the ones with the least additives and fillers and the ones with the highest actual veggie content.

And.. zucchini has become my best friend.

Stay strong ladies!! Everyone is doing a great job!!

Broccoli and Apple Salad

Sweet, crunchy apple and broccoli create a refreshing, light side dish. Prepare this salad up to eight hours in advance for best flavor and texture.

2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
6 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon canola oil
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (1 1/4-pound) head of broccoli
1 1/4 cups chopped Braeburn or Fuji apple (about 1/2 pound)
1/4 cup minced Walla Walla or other sweet onion

Combine first 6 ingredients in a large bowl, stirring well with a whisk.
Coarsely chop broccoli into 1 1/2-inch pieces, and place in bowl with vinegar mixture. Add chopped apple and minced onion, tossing to coat.

Yield: 8 servings (serving size: about 3/4 cup)

Okay ladies, I’m convinced this diet is worth giving a try and here is my dilemma. I had major surgery last week (hysterectomy and other corrective surgery) and feeling pretty good and wanting to use my down time (8-weeks) to regain control of my mind, body, and spirit. From what I have read so far, this diet seems to fit in nicely with my current diet requirements (high fiber, whole grains, fruits and veggies). I just placed my order for the book on Amazon and it appears as though it will be at least a week before the book is shipped and I am anxious to get started. Obviously, I will need to stock my cupboards with the required foods for Phase 1. I will not have driving privileges for at least another week so I will venture out over the weekend being chauffeured to the grocery store. Is there a food list somewhere or a summary of do’s and don’ts?

I will be limited in my exercise abilities but am working diligently on walking and increasing steps everyday. Hopefully, a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing!

I have started a cut & paste document of tidbits that I have picked up to help me get jumpstarted. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

Hi Everyone, I'm on day 3 of fat smash. My book is still on it's way. Could one of you give me the vegetable soup recipe? I started the plan on Monday - does that make it day 4 or 5? Anyways, last night I made the tomato recipe in the book, and it was very yummy, I like spicy things so the Dijon mustard was a real treat.

***Dont read from here on if you tempted by "real food". Today is the hardest day so far, My office is having an employee appreciation lunch which is a Hog Roast. They are having shredded roasted pork on buns, potatoe salad, baked beans, and sauerkraut and dont forget carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and a chocolate b-day cake for the Administrator......The smell of this is driving me coo coo:dizzy: And I am only telling you the menu so you can imagine the scent I have to sit here and smell and not indulge in:( IT is going to HARD!

My plan is to eat my lunch in my car, away from all this tempting stuff, and keep drinking my h2o. Like my hubby said, to think that I already have 1 week done!

Oh NO Pam! As a southerner with a serious history with bbq pork and potato salad, I can certainly sympathize. Just imagine how much stronger you are going to feel at the end of the day if you pass up the temptation. If you make it through this, you can make it through anything :)

Chargrilled vegetables are out of this world! Maybe you can plan to do that this weekend so you don't feel left out. They are addictive :T

Hang in there! The day is almost over :)

Hey everyone. I forgot to post yesterday. ACK!!!
I'm still doing awesome. Day 4 and NO CHEATING so far. The exercise has been horrible, but I'm getting some walking in, just not 30 minutes of it at a faster pace.
I made the lentil "soup" last night for dinner. Not a big fan, but I ate it anyway. DH loved it and he's not even following the diet. Shame on him.:p

Today is day 5 and the headache is finally gone. There are no cravings. I even went to dinner last night at Soup Plantation and did not go off Phase 1! I would have loved the ice cream and the breads, but I decided it is not worth it. My only frustration is my lack of motivation to work out. However, today is really the first day that I have not felt sluggish and I already plan to do a 4 mile run/walk this evening. Exciting Friday night huh? I am also planning to just do Phase 1 until next Friday...a few extra days can't hurt. I will also probably do the every other day thing in Phase 2...where every other day I will use a Phase 1 menu. I want this weight to be gone!!!!:p

Not yet. You can introduce cold cereals in phase 2, which begins on day 10. He doesn't list grape nuts but they should be fine as long as you measure out one serving according to the package.

Anyway, we went to a Mexican restaurant and I STAYED ON PLAN!!! :carrot: No chips, no anything but a salad with lettuce, onions and green peppers. I had to pick out all the chicken, but I did it! I would have LOVED chips and rice and a diet coke, but I held out!!! I can't believe how well I did!!! I really can't believe how well I'm adjusting to this plan. have a good dayI just can not believe how well this plan works, I am so excited, I feel like a little kid, I decided I needed a little motivation so I weighed this morning, and I am down 4.5 pounds in 4 days, well actually today is day 5 for me, I am thrilled, I was just hoping for 4 pounds for the whole 9 days, so that was a great surprise...The thrilling thing is, I did a bunch of running around yesterday and Hubby and I ate out twice, once for breakfast and once for dinner, and I stayed on plan, for breakfast, I ordered Oatmeal, I ate it with splenda and a banana, and about 1/4 cup of 2% milk, and since it was a late breakfast I didn't eat lunch, I was so full from breakfast, but had a yogurt and grapes for snack later on, and for dinner hubby wanted chinese food, and I agreed and I ate ALL veggies, NO meat just green beans, broc, carrots, snow peas, cabbage and onions, now I know it may have had some extra oils on them, but I figured it was better then eating the meat or egg rolls (my favorite) and then I had some honeydew melon, I was very proud of myself....We can do this ladies, it's a great plan and it WORKS.

I cooked it a bit longer then it calls for today and I liked it even better, hey GMTA, I had it for breakfast this morning too with a banana..I am making a pot of navy bean soup today, so that's what I am having for dinner tonight, for lunch I am having another cup of brown rice with sauteed onions, mushrooms, red peppers, and a salad with chick peas, and RF dressing...I don't remember who said they were going to stay on phase 1 a little longer, but I don't think that would hurt a bit, it's very healthy, and what great results we are getting..I am even finding that I have more energy during the day..Love love love it!!!

I am so proud of all of us!!! We sticking to the plan and reaping the benefits. I too am feeling good.....although I did break down and have a piece of grilled pork at the lunch yesterday - but I ate my tomatoes first, then drank 16 oz of water and had a very little piece of pork...about 2 oz. So really I am not counting that as falling off the plan.

Since its Saturday I got up and put on some workout clothes and did a "core" workout for 45 minutes. Then hubby and I decided to take a wall down in our living room - so between cleaning up all that sheet rock and vacuuming for 45 minutes I think I have met my work out needs for the day.

BTW - Thanks for letting me know I am on day 6 - I too plan on doing Phase 1 until friday - but then we leave for a cabin with friends.....which I am already starting to meticously plan what my menu will be, I think staying away from alcohol will be the worst.

Again, great job ladies!!! :carrot:

I'm with everyone else! This is the first "diet" I've ever stuck to for more than a few days and it is surprisingly easy. I'm seriously amazed. I passed up yummy catering yesterday and just had some grilled veggies instead. And I was satisfied and happy! I think the best part so far for me, is the lack of guilt at the end of the day. I don't wake up every morning remember last night's over indulgence, or the bad choices I made. Let me tell you, this is an awesome feeling.

So far my favorite Detox phase meal is brown rice with some grilled tomatoes and zucchini and italian seasoning. It`s very yummy.

Day 6...Oh No...just came from a family birthday BBQ and I messed up! I did not want to announce that I was on yet another diet. They did not have a green salad. SO, I did have a BBQ sausage (small) no bread. I had some beans and a handful or two of chips and a handful of reese's pieces. Honestly as far as calories for the day I think I am ok...I just blew it as far as detox. I tried to eat before going but time did not allow. I had a smoothie and oatmeal earlier in the day. So, does this mean I have to start all over on the 9 days? I am not discouraged, and plan to be back on it tomorrow and running too. I just gotta stop letting life occurances get me off track!!! I need to get rid of this miserable 30 pounds that I have had for the last 2 years!

Welcome to all you just starting out. The more the merrier!

Yesterday we went to TGI fridays - I stuck to the Santa Fe salad w/o dressing. Tonight the family went to Subway - I went shopping for veggies instead and now we are home and I am getting my meals set for the week.

I do realize that I crave carbs (especially bread and cheese) when I am upset. We worked on a few home improvement projects this weekend and we ran into a few snags and I wanted something bready, cheesy and warm. Instead I got up road bike up and down our street (our neighbors must get a kick out of that sight) and drank lots of water.....and I didnt bend my diet.

I am in dier need of wanting to step on the scale to see the #'s lost, but hubby hid it from we and he will return it to me on Thursday....I definately feel the differance in my clothes already - so as long as I lost more than 2-3 pounds I will be happy......(i want to keep my expectations of this wt loss reasonable even though most people loose more than that)

Well I am off the kitchen.....goodnight and good luck to those of you starting tomorrow. Remember to drink lots of water and plan your meals for the day so its easier to stay on the plan.

This is my day 3 fat smashing and I'm having fun with it! My favorite brown rice recipe is to add corn and some fresh salsa...yum spanish rice! Beats plain rice!

I quit smoking (after 16 years) a little over a month ago! My Dh is in the army and I get to see him in less that a month!!!! I've got to look hot for him!
