View Full Version : Food, Wine and Diet?

I admit it. I'm a foodie.
I love food. I don't just love eating in expensive restaurants either. I am a die-hard chef wannabe. I can spend hours preparing a meal and (gasp!) be in a fantastic mood when I sit down to eat.
I love wine. Oh my, wine and me go together like wine and chocolate. :)
So I'm going to give this plan a whirl. I'd love to hear some other people jump in on this and tell me their experiences. Or if you're just starting with this, join in on the conversation.

Glad to have you on board, Jessica. It will be fun coming up with new recipes to share with each other.
I've been on the Med diet for years and have been reaping the benefits, so the Sonoma diet is familiar territory. Jessica, I noticed you mentioning a family history of heart disease in another post and completely understand why you picked this to try. My father died nearly twenty years ago from heart troubles not related to his diet, but still it sensitized me to the importance of taking care of the heart. It has greatly improved my cholesterol numbers which is what my inital goal was.
One thing I really like that hasn't really been discussed yet is how the plan does stress the need for exercise!! In my life, exercise is not optional... I fit my life around my exercise.
Straight from the book:
"On the Sonoma Diet, you should do some exercise from the very beginning of Wave 1"
Dinner tonight- a chicken pesto (homemade tofu/spinach/broccoli/walnut pesto) with zucchini or spinach over whole wheat pasta. Now I need to go cook. :hun: :chef:

Yay, I'm glad you are joining us! I'm a foodie in training :p I'm looking forward to trying this, though I may not stick to it 100%. (long and boring story). But I love roasted vegetables, seafood, salads, and the flavors of the Mediterranean.
Jessica, LindaT knows good food. She's shared a lot of good recipes in the past :)

Looks good to me. Quantity would be my problem, especially with wine. I have a Christmas Gift card which I'll use to get the book once it's available here.
Happy new year!!
I am thinking of trying the Sonoma Diet and would like to join the group.
There are certain things that I just cannot give up, including chocolate and wine. I've been losing steadily (some pounds, more inches) over the past several months by exercising and eating better. I'd like to rev up my fat loss and think this could be a good plan for me.
Like Goddess Jessica, I love good food and wine; eating is truly a pleasure for me. Like LindaT, my initial motivation for eating better and exercising was to improve my blood pressure and cholesterol so I definitely plan to continue exercising and I am very interested in eating as healthy a diet as possible, meaning little to no processed foods.
I will probably start Wave 1 tomorrow or Tuesday; need to go out and find the book today!

Hi- could you post your sample menus? I'm waiting for the book to be shipped by Amazon and want to try and understand it properly. I've been doing SB (not very well over the last 3 months) and need to kick start myself.
Sounds very exciting!

Hi Clareh,
I don't have my book either. I'm sure there's a ton of issues with posting things out of the book online as well. I can tell you what I had to eat today!
Breakfast:
Fiber One Honey Clusters w/skim milk
Lunch
Greek Salad with shrimp and feta
Dinner
Salmon with Dill Sauce and Asparagus
Snack
Yet another bowl of the cereal because I needed something sweet and they say no fruits in wave 1.
I also had two cups of decaf tea, a bunch of diet pepsi and a ton of water.
I walked two miles with the dogs and AB.

Sounds gorgeous! Sorry if I didn't make myself clear before- I wasn't asking anyone to post anything from the book. It's very rare that I ever follow menus exactly (as there are always substitutions etc..) so am interested to see what people actually eat.
Looking forward to my book arriving by the end of the week!

I as well am eager to try the Sonoma diet. My husband IS a chef and we LOVE food...love love love it. I also may be German in heritage (along with the thighs to prove it) but I'm Greek at heart! I love everything about Greek food and living. So, after I had done my research about which plan I wanted to try (Zone...never been good at math! South Beach...love my breads too much!) and figured the Mediterranian diet would be awesome. Then, right before Christmas I saw the Sonoma book at the grocery store and was instantly hooked! I can't wait to go pick it up and really work it to it's fullest. Until then, any suggestions to get me jumpstarted? I know it says no refined white sugar in the first wave...for breakfast I had a half of a banana and 1/2 cup of vanilla yogurt (full sugar, that's all I have at the moment unfortunately). But, that's more breakfast than what I normally have.
I am looking forward to menu ideas and recipies...I'm so excited to be able to eat on a plan that fun to live with!

India: I love Tilapia! That sounds so yummy for supper tonight, but my husband is home and we'll see what the CHEF cooks :^: He is also going on a weight loss challenge through his job, but it doesn't start until the 16th, and so until then I think he plans to induldge as much as he wants. I understand about the fast food thing with the kids. My mother-in-law used to watch my girls, who my oldest is 2 and is highly impressionable even at her young age! My m-i-l would get McDonalds every morning for breakfast, and then she would get it for lunch as well! And then she wonders why her diabetes is out of control and why she needs insulin and why she is going blind...it's so sad. But I said from the start that I never wanted my children influenced that fast food is acceptable for everyday meals. I don't want to deprive them of the treat every once in awhile, I'm not that strict, but every day?!? Yikes!

Starting today.
I too have been on every diet. BUT...So tired of it!! I love food! The food that is offered in this book is FOOD! Wonderful and Glorious FOOD! Everything I like to feed my body. I'm so tired of the quick fix. I want to live and eat well to promote health. If weight loss is a fringe benefit than cool! My body and mind loves to exercise so that's going to be a welcome friend again. Been in a rut. Attempting to redefine myself. I guess it's that year away from 40 thing and/or that my oldest is graduating and my youngest will be entering school this year. Forever I was chasing this fitness quest that had a goal of being a babe. A babe in the eyes of society. Now I feel like..hey I am a babe. to hell with what other's think. Life is too short and I wanna live. I thought my Mom was peculiar at age 39 because she bought some leather pants and a porsche. Now I sorta understand that. Living life to the fullest seems to be at the top of my agenda for 2006. So eating well and exercising will only help me to be on top of my game. Not dieting. Plus dying to explore the gourmet in me. The Sonoma Diet and French Women Don't Get Fat are both appealing to me because the focus on quality over quanity. I'm looking forward to this cool journey!

I'm not an SB follower. I just wanted to say if you want to know what other people are eating, look around on posts and some people have their fitday journal as part of their signature. It takes some looking. I've also done a search on "my fitday." I look for eating ideas there as well. Also to compare calories, fat intake, etc.

Hello Everyone!
I have my Sonoma Book and have been following Wave One since Monday, 1/02. Am down 3 pounds today, and NO suffering!! :cp:
I lost 35 lbs with Suzanne Sommers about 3 years ago and all of it is back. :( I'm 55 this year and it gets harder with each yo-yo. The madness HAS to stop this time!!
I have followed the recipes in the book to a point, but like to mix and match ingredients too. I have fixed several meals "en papillote" (in parchment paper) and they have been easy and absolutely delish! HH (Handsome Husband ;) ) has loved them as well! They mainly consist of whatever meat or fish you choose, drizzled with a little ex-vir olive oil & spices and veggies. The combination of canned artichokes, a few green onion slices, a couple of sliced black olives, whole fresh tomato slices, slices of yellow squash and zucchini make a fabulous meal with little clean up!

I got my book yesterday!!! Last night I felt like I was holding the golden ticket! LOL! I'm so giddy to try this out...and I was reading the basics to my hubby last night and I think he's going to be a convert too (of course it helps that some of his favorite foods in the whole wide world are power foods, although he did not like me when I said no ice cream...then it was a "prison diet." ;) )
So, I will probably not be on as often today because I will be thoroughly engrosed in my book...learning how to do this wave 1...I think I've had a good start, I had a mushroom omelet fried in a touch of olive oil and a piece of the whole grain bread (well sorta whole grain...it's that whole grain white bread that's more of a cheat than anything else...but it's all I had until we go grocery shopping tonight)
If you still need your book and have a Kroger's grocery in your area, they have it on sale this week 40% off retail. Cost me like $12 I think...maybe $15 since it's list price is 24.95.

Here you go Sandra! I just did this for dinner tonight...it's a modified version of what's in The Sonoma Book. I used what I had on hand...but it's all legal :) HH likes fish, but I don't care for anything that had fins...so I'm having a small pork chop.
I prepared this ahead of time and it's waiting in the 'fridge til time to cook.
First I seared the chop and set it aside so that both meals will finish at the same time. Fish fillets are thawed.
Slice the following and divide into 2 servings:
2 small yellow squash (sliced pretty thin)
1 medium zuchinni (sliced pretty thin)
3 roma or 2 regular tomatoes (sliced thick)
4 black olives, sliced
2 green onions, sliced (I use the bottoms & about half of the tops)
3 artichoke hearts, quartered (use canned or bottled)
8 small broccoli florettes
8 snowpeas (whole)
I didn't have any fresh spices, so I got out my mortar and pestal and ground the following together. Used about 1/2 tsp of each:
kosher salt
black pepper
rosemary
garlic powder
ground basil
and whatever flavors you like :)
Mix spices together with about 3 tablespoons of olive oil and set aside so flavors can meld.
When it's time to cook, fold 2 large pieces of parchment paper into triangles. Open triangles.
On half of one parchment sheet, arrange half of the vegetables & place fish on top. On half of the other parchment sheet, place the chop on the bottom with the veggies on the top. Drizzle the olive oil & spice mixture over your servings. Fold parchment paper over each meal; crimp and fold the edges, twisiting the corners. You should have 3 twists.
Place packets in a shallow baking dish. I use my 13" glass lasagna dish. Bake at 375 for about 30 minutes or until fish is flaky.
Serve immediately. I serve in large pasta bowls because there's plenty of juicy broth when you open the packets!
I cook several servings of Barilla Plus Penne Pasta ahead of time and keep in my 'fridge for quick meals. If you want to, you can serve 1/2 cup (each) of this pasta with your "en papillote" meal. I measure my 2 servings of pasta and put a teeny bit of gorgonzola and a teeny bit of fetta cheeses along with a teeny bit of olive oil and garlic....then microwave a minute and serve with your en papillote.
Hope you like it!

flsunbakd: that sounds delish! I love zuchinni and I discovered over the summer that artichoke hearts are pretty gosh darn yummy too!
everyone! I learned a valuable lesson last night! If you are absolutely, not 100% positive how a dish is prepared, it's always best to ask! *sigh* My hubby decided that we were both to tired to cook last night (I told him I would but he was just looking for an excuse to go out...men right? hehehe) and so he suggested Chinese. Well, okay, I can handle that. Most Chinese places around here now offer brown rice and there's always something with more veggies and no breading on the menu. I decided to go with Almond Chicken because whenever I've had Almond Chicken anywhere else it's usually diced chicken, no breading, lots of veggies and I figured I can order brown rice. No, no brown rice. Oh well, okay I'll take steamed then I suppose. Well, on second thought, if I can't have brown I might as well go ahead and have fried so I can get a few more veggies, and hope that the tiny dab of oil is canola or peanut or something 'sonoma' like that they use. They bring me a heaping plate of nothing but lightly breaded chicken with a few hints here and there of mushrooms and onions. Spent the rest of the evening thinking I should have gone shrimp and broccoli or even vegetarian. Oh well, gotta get off my rump and find something for breakfast so I can possibly go work out again before work. Then it will be 3 days down, 19 to go to make it a "habit" (I think it's 21 days they say make a habit anyway).
Also, can anyone with more imagination than me think of an alternative to eggs and high fiber cereal for breakfast on wave 1? I've had eggs two days in a row and I'm not really an egg person...so I'm not wanting any eggs this morning and there is no high-fiber cereal in the house...yet. Oh well, guess I'll have to just suck it up maybe. I'll investigate...to bad there's no fast-food place that serves high-fiber cereal in the a.m!

What is the differece between this diet and the South Beach Phase two? It looks very similar. I read about the plates. 6 inch, 9 inch. Portion control is good, but so hard to manage as we are so acustomed in the US to supersize everything.

Hi Guys!
I forgot that I also put basil in this dish....so I edited and added it a minute ago! :dizzy:
Tammie.....you can have some whole grain toast with spray butter!
It's too bad you had to hit that bump in the Chinese Restaurant....I HATE when that happens!!!! :tantrum:
Tonight we're meeting friends at Olive Garden for dinner. I was freaked :yikes: until I went online to see if they have a menu at their website. Thankfully, they do...and I was able to plan my meal from their Grille section. They offer 4 entrees that are Legal!! :chef: Here they are:
Pork Filettino
Grilled pork tenderloin marinated in extra-virgin olive oil and rosemary. Served with Tuscan potatoes and bell peppers. 15.25
Herb-Grilled Salmon
Salmon filet brushed with Italian herbs and extra-virgin olive oil. Served with seasoned broccoli. 14.75
Tuscan T-Bone
Grilled 18 oz choice T-bone brushed
with Italian herbs. Served with Tuscan
potatoes and bell peppers. 19.25
Mixed Grill
Skewers of grilled marinated steak and chicken with a rosemary demi-glace, served with grilled vegetables and Tuscan potatoes. 14.75
Now instead of dreading our evening, I'VE got a PLAN!! Planning is the key. From now on, I'll be online looking to see who's got a menu I can look at. I think that after we're doing this for a while we'll be able to figure it out im-promptu, but for now, I need all the help I can get!
Oh...and...I WILL BE having that glass of fine red wine with dinner tonight....even tho' I'm still on Wave 1. :hat:

Yes....it did say in the menu that you can substitute veggies for the potatoes, which I will definitely do. My plan is also to put half of my meat in a to-go box at the beginning of the meal, 'cuz if it's on my plate, I WILL eat it.

Well there is no rule that says you have to eat breakfast food for breakfast. :) So have a piece of whole wheat pita, stuffed with lean meats and veggies, have some lentil soup, leftover roasted veggies over some brown rice.. get creative. That's the fun thing about this plan.. so many things you can eat.

I still haven't seen the book or anything, but you might look at the South Beach recipes for breakfast--there are some good alternatives for eggs. If you can stand a little egg, try cutting up a whole summer squash or zucchini into slices, and sautee in olive oil with onions and garlic. Then add one egg and scramble all together. YUM!

I got this recipe from the Ladies who Lift forum and I think it conforms pretty close to Sonoma breakfast guidelines.
Protein Pancakes
For one serving, blend the following:
1/3 c. egg or egg whites
1/3 c. low fat cottage cheese
1/3 c. uncooked whole oats
add vanilla and cinnamon to taste
Note: the recipe also called for adding Splenda or sweetener of choice, but I don't add any
Blend till smooth. Cook in a non-stick frying pan like regular pancakes. Makes 1 large or several small.
Prior to starting Wave I, I topped the pancakes with organic fruit spread, but the other day I added more vanilla and cinnamon than normal and it wasn't too bad. Though I am looking forward to Wave 2 so I can go back to adding my fruit. :D

I make a minor variation of these every weekend: I leave out the vaniila and cinnamon and instead use this as sort of am omlette and fill the inside with sauted mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and salsa. I also add some spice to the pancake batter. - Can never get too many veggies, IMHO

Dinner at Olive Garden went REALLY well! I had a good sized salad with just a teeny bit of their fabulous Italian dressing....ordered the Tuscan T-Bone. It was brought on a huge platter filled with small, fresh broccoli florettes & the steak cooked just right. I ate less than half of the meat and brought the rest home. I did fall off the wine wagon  and had TWO glasses  , but all in all, I feel pretty good about my first restaurant experience. :carrot:

WTG Jill. You did a fabulous job and you nailed it PLANNING!! I bet with the delicious choices you made you didn't feel deprived, did you? Just think in a few more days you'll be able to add back almost every food ( except of course the nasty refined stuff that is poison), but you know what? The longer you go, the less you'll want. I haven't had fast food in well over 2 years and I have never once wanted it!

Just a suggestion for anyone looking for smaller plates without having to go buy a full set. If you have a Chinatown or Asian shops in your area they usually sell plates individually and cheap too. You can get small dinner plates and bowls there.
Another trick I am using is to eat with my dessert forks from my cutlery set in stead of the regular forks. It seems to slow down the eating process :)

Thanks, Gina! It was a good week for me! I rewarded myself with a new WeightWatcher (brand) digital scale! My old analog was decades old. :p
You're right, there can be quite a bit of cooking with Sonoma, but many of the recipes are quick and easy. You can also improvise...here's a Swiss Steak I did in my crockpot yesterday. I think it's on par with Sonoma....but please ya'll....let me know if you think it's "legal" and I'll post it in the Recipe section if you do. It makes a really tasy & tender dish! I had some left-over Barilla Plus Angel Hair Pasta, and put my 1/2 cup beneath it.
Yum and Easy!
Swiss Steak :chef:
cubed steak (it's always lean!)
2 TB olive oil
sliced onions
sliced green bell peppers
sliced fresh tomatoes
(use plenty of veggies, 'cuz they cook down plenty!
salt & pepper
a little garlic powder
dash of ground red pepper, if you like
any other spices
Quick-brown the steaks in the olive oil & place in the bottom of your crockpot. I sprayed the crock with Pam Olive Oil spray first.
Then layer the sliced veggies on top.
Cook on low 6-8 hours, or on high about 3-4 hours.
ps.....I bought some whole grain pastry flour at the organic food store yesterday. It's very light, like regular flour except that it's made from wheat berries which gives it the fine light texture. It's definitely "legal". I mixed my spices with about 1/4 c. of the flour and patted it into the meat before browning...but it's not really a step you have to do.

I ordered lamb kabobs with sauteed veggies and couscous. (there was like 1/4 c of couscous and dh helped himself to part of it.) Did help my self to two glasses of really good white wine, but I'm almost done with wave 1 so big deal right? Then, dh asks for the desert menu. ACK! I agree to split a creme brule with him...I figure a few bites, no harm...then the server brings out NOT just the creme brule but also creme brule cheesecake (the BEST I've ever had!) and turkish coffee (I could have done without that! But I didn't want to be rude and not drink it) What could I do?!?! I couldn't say "send it back I'm on a diet?!?!" Extra workout tonight...I don't think it affected my sugar craving any, I mean, don't get me wrong it was soooo good, but I'm not going sugar crazy today or anything. :p
I think I'm going to compensate the extra calories with a little extra workout...but I want to do some pilates to work out some sore muscles after my strength training yesterday. I'm thinking instead of going at random I should set a pattern of some sort-cardio one day, strength training one day, piyo (pilates/yoga) the next...AFTER strength training. (I LOVE piyo! I want to join a class sooo bad!)

Ditto to Mercee:)
I have lost 2.5 lbs and remained sane. I am really enjoying this and NO I haven't been perfect on the WAVE I, but anything I have had has been on Wave II. Maybe I will move to Sonoma County,LOL:D

Ok, here I am! My name is Donna and I just bought the book today. Been participating in the Exercise isn't a dirty word thread for a couple of weeks now but hadn't incorporated the food plan in yet because of some digestive problems from a recent surgery last November. :) Lots of excuses paving my way to feeling tired all the time and just not being as healthy as I could be. I'm here because I want to change that. I don't have a lot to lose but I have a life I could lose early in my time if I don't start a healthier way of living with my food choices and exercise. Been doing very well with the exercise and now like I said I have the book, printed out the Wave 1 food list and ready to go! :encore: I guess I was wondering if I can join you guys here?! :?:  PLEASE!

Shirley, at the top of this forum, there is a sub forum called recipes that has several posted for both Wave 1 and Wave 2. I'll be trying to add more this weekend but look around there in the meantime.

Every " compromise" could slow down your loss. The items are cut out of Wave 1 for a reason.. to assist in reduction of cravings. If this is a risk you are willing to take.....

I lost a lot of weight the first time I did Atkins, but gained everytime I tried to go back on after re-gaining most of the weight. :( So far, so good on Sonoma, and I don't feel like I'm being deprived on it. :D

Hello,
I've been reading your threads on the Sonoma and I have to say I am interested! I thought I was convienced the South Beach was for me and posted an intro in the beach section http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72899 but that wine & few pieces of chocolate are calling my name I think! I would love to be able to serve my family healthy, gorgeous meals and many of these look so good. I also just happened to read an article today about how a mederratatian diet can add years to your life and heart health, which is really good thing;) I'm going to have to go get this book, in the meantime I'll modify and glean what info I can from all of you!

Shirley!
Thanks for the shout out. I've been doing bad - the first week was awesome but the second week I floundered. I'm picking myself up though and restarting.
