View Full Version : Support & Discussion Week of 3/21/04
diphthong 03-20-2004, 08:26 PM OK, I'm a day ahead of myself but I thought I'd get it going.
Most of us participate on other support forums, but I hate to keep bringing up Dr. Phil to my other buddies.
One of the things I love about Dr. Phil are his down-to earth ISMS. I call them Dr. Phil-isms. One of the things I did when I found 3FC was to read the success stories, and then every post made by those who have been successful. I gleaned as much information as I could about what worked, and even made some of these gals my mentors, long before Dr. Phil's book hit the shelves. I captured the following Dr. Phil-ism (acutally his father's) from Page 145 of UWLS-
"Successful people will do what unsuccessful people won't. . . Give these things a try; you might be surprised by the outcome. You don't have to like them; you just have to do them."
Gosh, I remember how I had to force myself to exercise! But the surprise outcome is that I'm now studying to become a certified personal trainer. And if I miss a day of exercise, I have a feeling of something is missing, or I forgot to do something important.
Anybody else have a "Dr. Phil-ism" they've found to be true?
Of course, this thread is open for anything you want to discuss, or if you need an ear, hand, arm, leg -

luckycharm 03-20-2004, 09:14 PM hey how are you doing my wonderful friend?
I am on my way out to try and find the Dr Phil book seems as I have some extra money this payday. Are you going to help me go through it from chapter 1?
Chat with you later.
diphthong 03-21-2004, 07:19 AM Well, lookey there! It's the rising phoenix!
Where ya been? Missed you, Kathy - big time. Cristi's back too. And yes, I will be there for both of you, just like I know you'll be here for me too. The timing couldn't be better for me because I've been under stress and anxiety for awhile, but now it's passed. Let's Do It! :grouphug:

Irish Tart 03-21-2004, 02:30 PM Well Dang, if you start back at chapter one...can I come too...I bought the book and loaned it to my sister like the self-sabatour that I am. I will wrist it from her hands (Or just go buy me a new one) and please, oh please (!) let me tag alone too!! I am ready for a new beginning now that Spring is ready to spring. I need the sunshine to feel well and this group is so supportive. I know that I can do it with just a few "atta girl's" from new friends and a lot of hard work and total commitment from myself!
corningkat 03-21-2004, 02:31 PM hi everyone! i was waiting for this to get set up. i have cruised this board on and off for years. i would like to jump in again. i have been giving dr. phil's plan a try. not whole-heartedly yet, but i am working on that. i don't have any problems with the intentional exercise, it my "intentional eating". :^:
i am single, no children, and live alone. i definitely have a boredom/lonely eating thing going on.
i met another girl on the dr. phil website and she only lives down the street from me. (what a coincedence). anyway, she started a local dr. phil group on wednesday mornings and it doesn't seem to be going the way we thought. it helps, just not like we thought it would. i think we had expectations to be like the tv group. everyone is very nice, they just tend to stray from the subject a lot.
anywho, i just wanted to say hi! am i posting all this on the right thread??
have a good sunday!
corningkat
diphthong 03-21-2004, 04:29 PM Welcome Irish Tart and corningkat! It's really great to have you aboard, and please bring your friends.
Feel free to post under the Dr. Phil Again threads where we have been rereading/discussing the book chapter by chapter. We all have much in common, and keeping discussion open on the chapters is enlightening for everybody. This weekly thread will be for support (thata girls!), lightbulb/OMG moments, show topics, and general chit-chat. Rants are welcome too, if you need to get something off your chest that's bothering you on *that* side of the monitor.
I also found the Dr. Phil Website hard to navigate and so many posts, that inter-personal communication was almost impossible.
3FC has got to be the greatest website/forum of its kind on the WWW. I love to surf and read as many of the forums as I can. Much to be learned here daily!
Check back later. . .

FrouFrou 03-21-2004, 05:12 PM Hiya Dip and welcome to corningkat and Irish Tart!
Good to see you to Kathy, I see you found Dip. Even though she wasn't lost. ;) It would be great to see Robin over here.
I will definitely jump in on the discussion also ladies. I have mainly been lurking on the Dr.Phil thread and haven't posted here in ages. It is good to read all the good advice and inspiration-keep up the good work Dip and others.
Dip, you are doing a great job with the thread, I am proud of you. And CONGRAT'S on studying to be a certified personal trainer! I think that would be the perfect job for you, you are doing an amazing job. :bravo:
Well, just wanted to drop in with a quick Hi.
Jo_Pointer 03-21-2004, 07:36 PM Hello luckycharm, Irish Tart, corningkat & Cristi04! Any friends of Dip are friends of ours!

15 pounds gone forever!!
When I combine one part honesty, one part courage, and one part acceptance, I come upon clarity in my life.
Irish Tart 03-21-2004, 11:34 PM Thanks for the welcome. I keep my two month old grandson through the week and take a class on Monday night so I won't get to post again until Tuesday. I really look forward to getting to know you. I'll write more later. Thanks again. Irish
DonnaD 03-22-2004, 01:20 AM Hi Everybody, I have been coming to 3fc for almost 2mos now and just love it. I also joined ediets (the more support the better) Being at the :comp: keeps me from putting food in my mouth. I just got it the end of jan. So I'm new at this too. There are other threads I post on but I didn't remember seeing a Dr Phil thread as a choice when scrolling. So since months ago I plopped down $18 for the book I figured I'd jump in. Unfortunately I read the book a couple of months ago and never followed thru. How's that for motivating :coach: I bet he'd have a few Dr Phil-isms for me. Anyway, I figured I would pick the book back up(since I am still struggling with staying OP an exercising regularly.) I see others mentioned starting at chapter 1. So if that's the case I'd to join in. I could use all the help I can get. I've read sugar busters twice, so I know what choices to make(I'm diabetic) and ediets helps with support(though I do make a lot of changes to the menu for it to contain legal SB ingredients.) so I think getting my head together is a major step and it seems Dr Phil is the one for that :drill: So do I start reading chapter one again or do you target specific areas? Hope it's ok to jump in like this.
rabgal 03-22-2004, 01:42 AM Hi there :D
I'm new to the board. I've got seven keys jigglin' in my pocket and I'm starting with my first "official weigh-in" tomorrow. I was glad to find this forum on 3FC.
Here's to hanging out without some great "losers" ;)
SHESuzyQ 03-22-2004, 04:36 PM Hey there, I'm new, my name is Suzy and I have read Dr. Phils book but I really have not put it to much use as my husband is not the biggest Dr. Phil fan in the world. He groans everytime I mention that book..
I have had a hard time staying motivated to lose weight, especially with all the yummy goodness that comes out around easter time. Or any Holiday for that matter!!!! :balloons:
I have just gotten over the "honeymoon" phase of losing weight and now I am stuck at a plateau and really want to get motivated to lose the weight.. I have about 50-60 more pounds to go.. :grouphug:
I weighed myself this morning.. I weigh myself every week.. and I am down 2 pounds from last week! I guess thats better than nothin! :fr: :dancer: :bomb: :yikes: :hun: :goodscale
diphthong 03-22-2004, 10:00 PM WOW, glad to see so many new folks jumping in here!
Welcome All!
DonnaD - We restarted the book, chapter by chapter. So as you read each chapter, feel free to post in the appropriate thread. Here's our comments on Chapter 1. but the thread has been closed -
http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34698&page=1&pp=15
However! You can post comments on Chapters 1 and 2, on the chapter 2 Thread-
http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34698&page=1&pp=15
and then the chapters' threads thereafter, Okay? SInce there are always people starting the book, and those of us who need to reread it over, and over again, I'm sure you will get some feedback to your posts.
SuzyQ - Doesn't matter what your DH thinks of Dr. Phil, you have this forum to discuss with US, him and the book. Did you see today's show about how people have used the Food Guide's Rapid Start program to break plateaus? Hey. if you're losing 2# a week still, you're doing great. Believe me, the thinner you get, the loss slows down - just means you have to work a little harder, practice your new lifestyle habits, and persist. The prize is the payoffs - good health, energy, and of course, that bonus - the clothes.
Hi Rabgal!
Have a great evening!

luckycharm 03-22-2004, 11:00 PM Hi everyone.
Wow Dip, thanks for starting a whole new group of Dr Phil gals. I finally bought the book and now I can start to read it.
Well thought I would pop in and check to see how everyone is doing.
Great to meet so many new people.

Irish Tart 03-22-2004, 11:18 PM Well, I get to post tonight after all so here I am.:D Dip, I saw Dr Phil's show today, too and I was really impressed with how much each person had lost on the Booty Camp challenge. I will take the Dr Phil companion book with me tomorrow and see what his fast start diet consists of. I have not settled on a diet that is right for me, so this one may be just the thing. I liked the looks of the sample meals that were served on the show today. It looks like substancial portions and since I don't tolerate starvation diets very well this looks promising. I am going to sit down tomorrow when the little one is sleeping (If that happens) and write out my diet and exercise plan and get started this week. I also will write out each step and make it as specific as possible, otherwise it will never get off the ground. I''ll report back tomorrow evening. Thanks again for being here and being so welcoming! Irish
diphthong 03-23-2004, 07:13 AM Hi Kathy! Always good to see you! You have no idea how thrilled I am for you that this just may be what you needed. ;) :grouphug:
Irish - I know when I started this journey, I needed structure. It wasn't so much that I was eating mass quantities that I gained weight, it was what I was eating and when, and of course no intentional exercise beside my daily life which was pretty active. I didn't know then that your body adjusts to what what you feed it as well as how much you move it, so you have to keep changing things to fool it.
I liked that almost all the campers said that they had to accept it as a lifetsyle change, and a permanent one. If y'all read the Maintiance Forum, you'll see that it's beneficial to accept and imbed in your brain *now* that, plain and simple, you just can't ever go back. Even though I walk the slippery slope hour by hour, that's what I tell myself. I have a disease named obesity and have to treat it as such if I want to remain healthy, now that I'm healthier than I've been in almost 30 years.
Have a safe and healthy day! Check back later . . .

waterbaby 03-23-2004, 03:06 PM Thanks for getting the thread started!!
I've had the book for several months and am just now getting to key 4!! I am always happy to revisit the other keys too...
Here's to seeing "less" of everyone, and congrats on making a wise decision to live instead of shorten our lives.
Hugs!
Irish Tart 03-23-2004, 10:25 PM You're right Dip, it will have to be a lifestyle change otherwise it will never work. I need more water and veggies in my life and less coffee and white carbs. Plus, the intentional exercise which may be a little bit more difficult to manage, but it's not impossible. I'll just have to get up a little earlier to do it before going to baby sit. I am just going to do what I can do and if that is only 20 minutes a morning some mornings and more other mornings then at least it is a start.
I looked at the fast start diet plan and it looks doable. The next step is to go to the store to buy the right foods so that I will have everything that I need on hand. I'm starting to get excited about the possiblilites. I know it is up to me to follow through so that I can get a routine going. I just need to do the next right thing. Talk to you all soon...Irish
SEARCHING4ME 03-24-2004, 11:10 PM Well I just wanted to jump in here today....you all seem great.
I just bought Dr. Phil......last week or so. And I gotta say, I'm likin' it.
I don't get to see his show too often, but when I have I just really enjoy, as you say, his Philisms.
Since starting the book I have been keeping all together, with me everyday, all day, his book and all the "homework" with it, my regular journal , and a food log. Its the first time I have kept a food log. I figure if I'm gonna "Get real" I better really see what it is that I'm eating and when and where.
I have tried a few diets and found most success with Susan Powter.....but I have come to realize that the up and down, and the staying power can only come when I figure out whats really wrong with me. When did I get so out of hand and why have I given up on myself?
I really am trying to use his exercises to their fullest. I saw the one man on his show recently.....the one that had the real mean wife.....that didn't believe in him......well, he said it was about becoming a better him.....I really got that.
That's what I want.....I want to be a better me. The me I used to be. No, not super skinny, not young, but realistically, the fun loving, confident, outspoken, pushy pain in the butt girl I used to be. I used to like me.....I was a very nice person once.
I take my mother swimming three days a week at the local YMCA, we water walk and swim (slowly) but we do it for at least an hour sometime hour and a half. so I have been trying to walk the dog at least on the other days. So far this week, its been good. I even walked him one day before I went to pick her up. I can only walk a few blocks because walking is very painful for me, but I know if I keep doing it I can build up slowly.
Now look at how long that was!!!!!! Sorry!
Hope to read more from you all soon.
diphthong 03-25-2004, 06:55 AM Hi Everybody!
Sorry, I've been MIA, but I'm trying to stay off the computer to get Spring cleaning done and prepare for a garage sale in a few weeks. We have lived in this house for 10 years - the same 10 years that I gradually went from 200# to almost 250. So since changing myself, I have this strong desire to change everything around me too. Like stripping out the frig and cabinets for a no-fail environment, I want to strip out and eliminate all the stuff I've accumulated, and have a fresh start. New me, new environment - simple, uncluttered and structured.
Anyone else hold on to stuff that they haven't used in years, but hold on to it anyway?
Welcome evilyn! I like water-walking myself, and now that the weather is getting warmer, I'd like to start using the pool again at my gym. I never read Susan Powter's book but saw her many times on TV years ago, and would listen to everything she said which made sense. I just didn't have enough sense then to "get it" and put it into practice. Stop the Insanity! She sure had that right. Anyway, hope you will be active on the forum and share your thoughts as you go through each chapter - afterall, we learn from each other.
Big HELLO! to all and hope you're having a productive and successful week. Don't ever give up - it's one hour, one day and one week at a time.
Best,
dip
Jo_Pointer 03-25-2004, 01:40 PM Welcome DonnaD, SHESuzyQ, rabgal & evilyn! And welcome back, Claire!
I'm glad to know there are other Susan Powter fans out there! I happen to love her wacky style, and she has always made good sense to me. I have three of her exercise videos that I love to do, and I use two of her books as continual references (Stop the Insanity and Food!)
Evilyn, you sound like you are still a very "nice person" to me! :)
Irish, can you put your grandson in a stroller and take a long walk with him? It's great exercise for you and new scenery for him. That is what I do with my son on the days I can't make it to the gym.
Three cheers for your clutter clearing, Dip! As I shared on another thread, I am a terrible pack-rat and have a horrible time letting go of even the most basic things. I work daily to just LET GO! I've been a selling fool on eBay the last few weeks, I have a huge pile of things to go to Goodwill this weekend, and I've been weeding through piles of :censored: and throwing away what I don't need/will never use. Clutter has such negative energy and I'm working hard to rid myself of it! Honestly, it feels like an uphill climb, so I could always use encouragement in this area!
Don't ever give up - it's one hour, one day and one week at a time.
Amen, sister! :D
Thank you all for your support and inspiration.

15 pounds gone forever!
Every minute is another chance.
diphthong 03-25-2004, 02:05 PM Hi Jo! 15 pounds!?!?! :cp: Woo-hoo! And on the clutter, too. You're right about the negative energy - I feel like I'm being freed as the piles I've made diminish. I just put one of my neice's baby blankets in the Goodwill Box - my neice is 32. How nuts is that? It was so pretty I hated to give it up, and it reminded me of her as a baby. I have a permanent memory on my right forearm where she bit me when she was 2 and it left a scar.
Happy Birthday, Evilyn! :cb: :balloons: :cb:
Hope everyone is having a Super Day!
dip
Irish Tart 03-25-2004, 04:10 PM Thanks Jo, I hadn't even considered the stroller. Now that the weather is co-operating a walk would do us good. Congrats on the weight loss! Fifteen pounds is a pretty good loss. I bet it has really boosted your confidence.
Happy Birthday, Evilyn. I think you are all ready nice, too! :dancer: :hb: :hb: :hat: :cp:
Hey Dip, Good job on the Spring Clean Fling. I am giving lots of stuff away too. I have started to throw things out. It is amazing how much easier it is to clean without the clutter. I still have a ways to go ,but at least it doesn't look like "Sanford and Sons" around here anymore
I'm going shopping this evening to get all the foods that I'll need for next week. I have got a menu plan in place so I can fix some filling and tasty OP meals. I am making it easier on myself to remember what I am suppose to be doing instead of just doing what ever ( or not doing what ever ;) ) and eating any old thing that I could stuff in my face.
I'm going to start working on the Dr Phil steps so I'll be posting there as soon as I finish the 1st chapter. See ya soon , Irish
SEARCHING4ME 03-27-2004, 03:24 AM Thank you very much for the Birthday wishes and for sayin' I'm nice. As the Good Dr. says, I gotta start changing the negative diolog in my head.....This is a good place to start.
Yippeeee! 15lb lost is awesome Jo!!!! I am happy for you.
One of the really strong traits I got from both my parents is the clutter bug, can't throw a blasted thing away syndrome. I have been trying to these last few weeks. I started throwing out, (whooo hooo, I even said the word!!!)
Old clothes, I was keeping thin clothes, even thing that where totally worthless, elastic dryed out and brittle, things older than 20 years....crazy! So 2 bags, one trash, one for donating...and One bag actually made it to Purple Heart. :cheer:
Dad never threw any thing out "cause you never knew when you might need it, and also because you never knew what it might be able to become. My girlfriend called my dad "Daddy Walt McGyver" He would create some of the most interesting, and useful, albiet sometimes UGLY, stuff. And my mother never gets rid of anything because she's gonna "get to that someday". :dizzy:
Well, I got both parts.....Big time!!!! :p
Oh my, I gotta go, I have to be up for work in four hours!!!!
Thanks again.....Talk to you all soon!!!
Summerlover 04-04-2004, 12:19 PM Hi Dip. I am so ready to move on to chapter 9 of Dr. Phil's book. However, we are the only ones who posted for chapter 8. Should we wait to see if anyone else has anything to say or just move on? I hate to drag this out, while at the same time, I hate to jump ahead before people are ready to do so. I will leave it up to you. Thanks, Summer
Jo_Pointer 04-04-2004, 01:44 PM I vote to go ahead and move on. I will be posting on Chapter 8 tonight, but don't want to hold anyone else back.
Happy Sunday!
Jo
Irish Tart 04-04-2004, 01:46 PM Hi Summer, As a newbie and just speaking for myself, I sure don't mind if you move on to the next chapter. We are all at different levels. Don't lose your momentum because of us- we'll catch up. I am just glad that this forum is here, because I think the seven keys can really make a difference in my life. You are Dip are the fore runners on this program. It encourages me to see you ladies doing it,and gives me hope that I can do it too. I will post on chapter one and two this evening.(I am suppose to be reviewing the chapters now, but am reading the forums instead :p ) Have a great day! Irish
diphthong 04-08-2004, 07:45 AM Summer, I totally missed your post above - sorry. I agree with Irish about moving forward if you'd like. I'm a little behind again because I've been focusing on getting things done around the house and yard, and haven't taken much time to read anything beyond studying. So go ahead and start the next chapter thread if you desire and we'll catch up, OK?
