Well...I for one am about sick to death of diets. None of them really work for me!!! They are all the same. I say just eat less of what ever it is you eat! If you eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full and eat less food you HAVE to lose weight! Right? Even if you are eating the same food you have always ate! If I stop eating sweets or chips or any certain KIND of food, then that is the kind of food I crave! So I wind up giving in and eating it eventually. If I give myself permission to eat it when I'm hungry ... in moderation ... and stop when I'm full. Eating less of it than I did before ... just cutting back on the AMOUNT of food I eat, then I should lose weight. You can't eliminate food from your life, it's a necessity, it's always there (kind of like some people), so you have to just deal with it!

Hey guys-there already was a #104. But anyways. Please read Dr Phil's book. IT IS NOT A DIET!! I ahve a challenge-I am baking for the Church Fair and I have to weigh in tomorrow. We'll see how I do. I just got on the computer because the DSL was down. I am having a problem with my knee. Chiro told me it's a disc on the side of my knee. We walked gor 90 minutes yesterday. Too much!!Been answering the questions in the bokk-check out the book discussion under the TOPS forum. Be good all. Mima

Well girls another 2 1/4 lbs gone- Hope I can keep it up..I want to stay on this quick start for another week. Now I am looking for more variety. After monday I can add fruits and some other carbs. I am going to hold out for one extra week.
Meme- I don't like to say I am on a diet . It is a eating plan ,because, I know that I have to eat this way for the rest of my life.. I gain very easy... I will slip. We are all only human..But, I have been heavy for more than half of my life and I hated it.That thought may help to keep me focused.
Mima- I won't buy Dr. Phills book.. I can't even watch him on TV.. But if you and anyone else gets something good out of it, that helps you ,that's great.
Hello Ally ,Anagram,Happy...

Congrats to you-Joanne-That does sound like a good plan and I like that you can add carbs back in-complex carbs I'm sure- I did really well this week staying on WW with points and walking-I hope it shows up at TOPS this am. I didn't even eat a choc. chip cookie yesterday-only a cocanut one made with healthy margewrine-no trans fat- and Splenda. It was good. The book club discussion is not under TOPS-it's at the top of the forums-tomorrow is the church fair-I will be working ALL DAY and then going to the chicken barbecue. I am only working one day next week because they didn't have many tests to correct-Meme-I haven't found anything in the book about people with physical ailments and I know it affects the way you think and feel about yourself-I just did a checklist and found I have a view of myself that is negative because of my age, flab, and pysical ailments. That should be a whole other book. But I can swim and feel better and I haven't-that always makes me feel good. Bye for now-Mima

You know, I think when we are young and immature we have a certain image of ourselves. We are impressed by our peers and try to maintain what everybody thinks is beautiful. Now that we are " YOUNGER"( dislike older) we think that we should be the same. That is not going to happen. Gravity is a certain!! So is grey hair. We can fix that.. We need to change our self image and still understand we are still beautiful . We need to strive to stay healthy. Keeping our weight at a healthy level is part of that. I am one of the millions that constantly strives to feel and look ok. Our own self image is what is important. That is my view. Every day we all deal with life has given us.We are all different, but ,that is what it is supposed to be.Now I will jump off the soap box.
Meme- I agree with you..I think the general public makes too much of "diet" . I am trying to change my "stinking" thinking. In order to maintain good health we just have to adjust and know that we will go on that way endlessly...
When do you take your vacation?
Hello Ally.Anagram,Happy...I hope everyone has a fun weekend planned..............Joanne

Hi. My name is Xine (pronounced "Christine"), and this is my first post. I am a 45-year old female, weighing about 450 lbs. I also have FMS-MPS/CFIDS, amongst other things, which really complicates attaining any level of activity, since even just deepwater walking in the pool sets off my FMS-MPS and can lay me up for a couple of days to a few weeks. It's rather depressing and demoralizing, and I'm considering WLS at this point.

Unfortunately, I live in a cow town, and I'm on disabilty, so I do not receive the best medical care.

I guess I don't really have anything more to say right now; it's just very frustrating.

Good morning. It's the day of the fair and I have been awake since 3:45. Brad is going to help take the heavy boxes outside . It is not a very nice day but as long as it doesn't rain , we will be ok. I lost one and a half pounds. I was happy . We got another new member so that makes 2. Very nice ladies-we are all over 60!!!Way over. I am still reading my book-I won't say Dr. Phil's , Joanne, and I did some writing on my self image etc.,It sure has been affected by my health problems. I need to see myself in a more realistic light-I am going to join something nearby to swim twice a week. That's my best exercise. Joanne-good soapbox-good self-talk. Well, have a good weekend. Today is busy but fun!!Mima

Welcome to the fibro thread Xine. I, too, live in a 'cow town'. I have to go to Nashville to the Rheumatologist...long trip. Are you married? Have any children? How long have you had fibro? Fibro is really bad when you can't move about ... I know ... been semi-down with an ankle for a good bit now!

Joanne... vacation is next Sat. morning at 4a.m. I'll never make that trip... they'll have to carry me in the condo!!! (Or just leave me by the ocean once we get there!) :p

Gotta go try to 'hobble' my way through Wally World ... UGH!

(Made brownies last night ... big mistake!) :(

MEME, thanks for the welcome. :)

I'm divorced, with one child, but he's 22 now, so not quite a child.

I think I noticed the CFIDS before the fibro, in that I was so profoundly exhausted at times, and all of the doctors I saw said it was nothing -- in my head. This was when I was in my late 20's, but I didn't have any noticable fibro then. That started some time after I sprained my ankle badly in '89, but I had no idea what it was. It wasn't until my sister started talking about her fibro that I noticed we had the same symptoms and I started researching and went to my doc.

The only meds I've been given for it was amitryptiline (sp?), but it makes me sleep too much and I don't know what else is out there, so I just suffer through with pain pills and a massage of Tiger Balm when it's really bad.

I know my weight just exacerbates the situation, but without the ability to exercise, my options are quite limited.

Mima- I hope that I didn't upset anyone with my "soap box"? I think that too much is made of age and diets and how we look as we get' younger' ,sometimes instead of good health..
Good weight loss.. I am about to fold sometimes but I only have 9 or so lbs to lose...Our group is small now ,but, I think it is because of summer... It is bound to get larger the closer we get to fall.
Xine- Have you concider getting into a support group for weight loss? Maybe you need to discuss your concerns about weight loss and good health with a Dr. who will show concern...
Welcome - we are here to help you if we can..You just spill it out whenever you need to..
Meme- Enjoy your vacation..

Amytriptyline puts me to sleep, too. I refuse to take it. Flexeril is pretty good ... I take a half once or twice a day ... also Aleve helps me quite a bit. I take the red and yellow coated ones, they don't hurt my stomach as bad as the blue ones. I find when I eat a lot of sugar I hurt worse. Does what you eat make a difference in how you feel? I know what you mean about being exhausted. My blood count is so low I'm always tired. I also have Rheumatoid and Osteo Arthritis and have been anemic since I was born. Have you ever heard of Oxycise? It's a breathing exercise program. Anybody can do it. I've had surgery on both knees and just had a shot in my ankle Monday so I can't walk much ... I can do Oxycise. You should look into it, You might like it!

www.oxycise.com

I've been trying to read Dr. Phil's book for over a week now but I just can't get into it. Must be something wrong with me!!! Maybe I just have too much on my mind right now! I think he has too forceful a personality to suit me!!! :p

Mima
09-28-2003, 08:14 AM
Your right Meme-he does have a forceful personality. I have been reading one chapter at a time and doing the assessments. He does give a lot of strategies-that's what we need I think. And getting real and not being in denial about what gets us in trouble. Joanne-no apologizing-we have a right to our opinions and I thought yours were right on. By the way-the low carb bread is made by Arnold's, my daughter said. She bought it-9 carbs but 3 are from fiber. Craft fair went well but we didn't make as much money as last year and we have a lot of stuff left which we will sell at another time. But I had fun and I didn't overat or have the desire to. And met a lot of new people which I needed to do. I had a taco-3 merangue cookies and chicken, small baked potato, salad, tiny bread, and 1 cookie. That was all day and I did run around like crazy. Knee hurt like crazy-don't know what is going on with it but going to swim tonight at the hotel-after I shop. I'm only working one day-unusual!!!Welcome Xenia-Bye for now. Mima

Joanne, I guess I haven't considered that because I've been to so many diet group meetings, of all kinds, that I have developed a visceral reaction to them.

I'm not quite sure what to do at this point and I'm kind of still weighing my options, I guess.

Thank you for the welcomes, all. This seems like a really friendly board. :)

Mima- Thanks .I think I have seen Arnold bread down here. I'll look it up.. I bought a real healthy dark wheat bread last week. My hubby has been feeding it to the squirrels and birds... He didn't like it . I haven't started eating bread yet.. I'll have to buy some...If I ate all that you had Mima I would have gained for sure..My system must be really slow to gain as fast as I do when I eat out... Fast food is off limits for me..And ,I love it!!
Xing... Groups have changed a lot in the past few years.. You might find one that will really help you..

Welcome to Xine and Hiho to all others. Have strung together a few good days again this week. But scale not moving unless I pick it up and carry it around. Hanging in anyway just to show this body who's boss.

Beautiful weather here today - finally my time of year. So much easier to exercise and everything else. Lots of hurting lately with all the rain coming and going. Not as bad today.

Love your motto, Xine. So don't let them.

09-30-2003, 08:16 AM
Good morning-only way I didn't gain was because I was running around like crazy but my body wasn't happy. I worked my one day-saw my friends-swam in the freezing pool but slept like a log after. I am going to join the place with the warm pool near here. Xine-Joanne and I are members of TOPS-it's not a diet but a support group-very nice people-read Dr. Phil's book-and do the questionaires-it's great. Going to tutor today-let's see how that goes-these are needy children. That was funny about your scale , Anagram. I almost want to stop writing my points but right now I don't think I should. 3 to go-Bye for now-Mima

Joanne D
09-30-2003, 11:52 AM
Mima- Do you mean 3 lbs to goal?Or did I missread that...I have about 9 to goal. And a few more to give me a edge. Tutoring children/ I wish I could get my hubby to do some of that. He has been out of teaching 15+ years and needs something to motivate him.. I send him out in the yard to work from time to time just to keep him moving...He sometimes can do an hour or so and then I tell him time to come in..When I was nursing the one thing was to keep the patients moving. You let them get into a wheelchair that's where they would stay, just because it was easy. My hubby likes his rocker or the couch.
Anagram...Carry the scale! Well some people carry weights. I walked yesterday and there was a woman with weights on her ankles and holding what look like 5 lb weights in her hands. My scale isn't moving to fast this week either. I'm not doing anything too different.
I wish I owned a warm pool. I would be in it every day... It is so much easier to walk in water than out of it..I joined a club once . The best part was walking in the pool and the hot tub. But then I had to have knee surgery and there went my $300.
Hello everybody...I guess you all are very busy..Joanne

I love to water walk. There is a hotel near me that lets people come to swim for a monthly fee. I need to get my butt there. 3 lbs to goal but when I started I only needed to lose 10-not the usual 20 that I go up to. NOW I HAVE TO KEEP IT OFF. My jeans were too loose. I should send those elastic waist ones to my DIL. Tutoring was fun-even though I got lost getting there and coming home-I have 2 sisters-one is bright and 1 is in special ed and on meds and tells me how stupid she is. that would be something good to help her with. It seems rewarding to work there and it's only 2 hours once a week. I love to help with math-I know a lot of tricks. Hey Joanne-how is your knee. Hubby is up now-hi everyone!!Mima

Mima- Most of the time my knees are doing ok. I have a tendency to overdo in order to get things done and then it is back to the groaning.I walk every other day because the knees hurt. I try to work in the yard and house the other days. The yard has just gotten too much for my hubby to do alone. He is stubborn. He won't hire anyone to help. So my son and I are trying to do it...Too much yard.. What can I say...It nearly did me in this past week.
Tops tonight and I so far have not seen, on my scale ,a loss. No gain though.I should have had a loss with all that I have done this week.
Well the No call went into effect yesterday. We had one call. I have a answering machine so it was no one I know..I used to get as many as 12+ or more. Even up into the night.
Hello everybody...I am not a baseball fan. We do watch the Bucs.

Good morning ladies.

Mima - I hope your body likes you better today. They tend to get like that, sometimes for no reason at all. Good going on your weight loss. Soon you will be at your goal weight. Congratulations.

Joanne - Good going on your diet as well. Too bad hubby won't hire someone to come help you out with the yard. That's why we moved to a condo, because I could no longer do it (hard to do when you can't bend, and the motion of raking, just did nothing but cause pain), and my hubby doesn't have time, nor a desire to do it.

Meme - You must soon be getting ready to hit the road. Hope you have a great vacation.

Candice - hope you are doing ok. Is the anxiety passed yet.

Hi Ally - hope thing are going good for you.

Anagram - Fall is my favorite time of year as well. We are having some incredible weather right now. Still up in the high 60's and low 70's, so we have nothing to complain about. We could use rain however.

Xine - I find it hard to exercise as well. When I do try it, either the arthritis in my back (in the Facet Joints - the ones the give us motion) lock, or the FM kicks in; sometimes both have a go at me, and it seems to take weeks to get back to what I now consider normal. However, I keep on trying.

Well, ladies, I hope you all have a fantastic day.

I will be happy when we can go to Superwalmart. I also go to Sam's but usually only buy granola bars and peanuts for Auntie to feed the squirrels. She must spend half her income feeding animals but it is like a hobby-she enjoys it. It's cold!!! Brad finally got the heat in the whole house working but thermostat needs a battery, Still reading my booh, Big revelation-I eat too fast. I knew that but now I KNOW it!!!Making changes. I did not get my nutty cravings yesterday because I read instead of watching tv, ate an apple before dinner, and did needlework at night. Hi all - Good loss, Joanne. I also lost a bit finally this week but probably be back on by next week. Tomorrow's our 45th anniversary. Today we were supposed to leave on an overnight trip. I started the dishwasher as we were getting ready to leave and it ran a minute and stopped. It, microwave, disposal and several outlets were out. Several hours and lots of $$$$later we were back in business. But I'm really disappointed we didn't get to go. Going to DDs Monday to help w/kids a bit as her DH is going to Egypt. But that 's not the same as going away for your anniversary, is it? We'll try to find something nice to do tomorrow anyway but I'm cranky about it tonight.

Van is all packed and ready to go. Going to take a shower and sleep for a few hours...leaving at 4 a.m. and it's 11 now. Not much sleep coming my way tonight!!! Have to be up in 4 hrs. Hope you all have a nice week!!!

I didn't lose my 10 pounds ... just 5 but my new bathing suit looks fine ... I'm not taking the granny one. Ordered a different one from Pennys... hubby likes it and that's good enough for me. ;)

Great Meme. I'll miss your funny jokes. Congrats Joanne. My situation is the opposite-I was down on my scale but only lost 3/4 at TOPS. But I only have 2 and a 1/4 to go. And I am forcing myself to eat slowly. Congrats on 45 years, Anagram. Go away next weekend. What was the matter with everything? Sounds electrical. I got in the doghouse yesterday-I threw away some of Brad's catalogs-I told him he should look through them but he doesn't remember me saying that-they were on the chair in the kitchen !!!!Oh well-I can always order more for him . Have a good weekend. Mima

Hi Guys!!!! I did not disappear....just have been crazed for a while. Fibro flare, still taking care of my aunt, work went a little wild. I had thought about early retirement and maybe doing case management for the elderly. Now that I am doing it for free for my aunt.......never mind. Wheelchair in and out of the trunk (oh my aching back) nasty mean doctors who do not care about an 81 year old woman, restaurants where you are ignored and they act snotty cause you have an old person in a wheelchair.
By the By though...I found a TV show where no one is too thin or too attractive. Brotherhood of Poland New Hampshire. Wedned nites.
Joanne.... I have been hoping and hoping that one day I will wake up and be this wise old lady who knows that there is so much more to me than how thin or pretty I am. I am still waiting.
Mima....If Dr Phil helps you accept yourself the way you are...then I say READ HIM!!!
Meme...see you when you get back.
Anagram...Happy Anniversary!!!
Candice...where are you???

Good morning-stayed up to watch Red Sox but it was worth it!!!Home run in 11th to win-2 to go!!!Hi Ally-loving that Dr, Phil book-so many strategies-if I did all that he said , I wouldn't need to count points but I'm scared not to. You are so good to your aunt-all I have to do for mine is get stale bread and peanuts so she can feed the animals. Did some exercises and sciatica is better so I can walk. My fibro book talked about tight muscles in upper thighs and that's it-course you are suppossed to be sure you don't have any disk problems. and I'm not-gotta join pool this week. Blue Cross even pays. Gotta eat-Mima

Joanne D

Ally- Don't rely too much on the Dr.'s to give anymore than you make them. A girl would have to be 25 and weigh 125 to get a rise out of most of them. And a Dr. is the one who told me that. I asked him what kind of a physical he gave. That was his answer. It is true they pay little attention to the senior citizen.
Like me ,You may wake up someday and think that you don't give a hang what anyone thinks, just look good for yourself and the ones who love you..That is all that matters,in the long run...You will have a star in heaven for the good things you do for others..
Mima- How dare you throw out your hubby's books! Mine has a room full of junk I would like to throw out..He probably wouldn't miss it ,but,it would be my luck he would..
You are really into the ball games.I wish my insurence would pay for me to go to a pool..
Anagram-Happy 45 years.. Sorry you missed your night out.. You can still do it..
I have been working real hard to get off a few more lbs, I have been doing the south beach diet.. It is not something I will be willing to maintain forever. I still keep track of my points.I will eventually go back to Maintaining with points and a more livable diet. I am hungry a lot on this eating plan..Although it says to eat a snack between meals ,I haven't done much of that..Snacking has been a problem for me..
Keep well everybody...Joanne

Hi all. I'm off today to play with my princesses for a few days. Their Daddy left on a trip to Egypt last night so we're going down to help Mom out while he's gone.

Sort of in a down mood the last couple of days since we had to cancel our getaway. Hope their cheery energy will snap me out of it and back on to the healthy eating I was doing earlier last week. I know I'll get a lot of exercise with them.

Mima- Tell him he won't be a baseball hubby after the games are over. We watched the Bucs last night and it was a shocker. They lost ,but, the colts coach was due that win. He used to be coach for the Bucs and the Glazers fired him by phone when he lost the last game of that season. All the players and fans were upset about that. But you know how big business is.Now Jon Gruden is a good coach. He took them to the Championship.
It is something to read where some of you are having hard freezes and we are still in the 80's.

Good morning.

Mima - Got Dr. Phil's book and started reading. I am not very far into it - yet! Will be after today. He has a great sense of humor. Well, women are usally the sports "widow", so this is a good change

Joanne - Well, you would think I lived in Florida!!! The past week, we have had temps. up in the 80's during the day. Nice fresh mornings, hot afternoons and cool evenings - PERFECT, PERFECT, WEATHER!

Candice - Glad you got your garden pulled up. I don't know why those men of yours don't help you. My hubby would NEVER have let me to do that. I guess if YOU get satisfaction out of it, then the pain could be worth it. Glad your dog is a little better. Hope your computer gets fixed. Hate it when they don't work right.

Anagram - Belated happy 45th ! A lot of years under the belt there. I am sure you were disappointed not being able to go on your trip. Unfortunatley, life took over. Enjoy your grandkids.

Well, I guess Meme is away on her holiday. Hope she is sitting by the pool, RELAXING.

Hi Ally - How is it going? No snow here! It did snow a hundred miles South of here but not in EDMONTON. This is a great long Fall, better know as INDIAN SUMMER to us. It is supposed to cool of by the weekend and get into the 60's. That is find as well. It is the 30 BELOW that I don't like;)

This past weekend went to two birthday parties - one for my cousin, who turned 60, and one for my son's girlfriends little boy, who turned 5. That took care of Saturday and Sunday. Then, we went for a walk along the river. Edmonton has the most beautiful river valley, and it is alive with color right now. I will try get a couple of pictures posted.

Well, everyone have a great day.

Happy- I thought it was cold up there. Occording to the weather reports we get down here. It is in the 80's just not quiet as humid.. It is a lot more pleasant than it has been..
I have worked out in the yard lately and it has been not too bad..
Hello everybody.
Hope you are having a good week...Joanne

Hi Ladies. Do any of you have eye problems when you are in a flare up??? All of a sudden it feels like I need a stronger prescription. I can't see
at night at all, and even during the day I am squinting. But this happened all of a sudden.
Today one eye was red, and then I got a migraine.
Arghghghghghghg!!!!!
Happy....I will have to read Dr. Phil's book sometime. His wife says they never argue. She said "I know my place. I am a wife and mother". Something about that bugged me a bit. But it must work for her!!

Hi Ally. My eyes get bad - really blurry, and then all of a sudden they go back to where they were. Asked the Opthamologist about it and the connection to FM. He said they didn't know enough about it(FM) to know if it affects the eye muscles. I personally believe it does.

Also - I argue. Guess I don't know my place, but I am not going to be subserviant to anyone!! My goodness, what a thing to say.

The picture in my signature, is the river valley in Edmonton. It is absolutely beautiful in all seasons, but especially colorful in the Fall.

What a beautiful picture-we haven't great color yet but some. I love Fall. I am reading Phil's book one chapter at a time and trying to do what it says but I guess the secret is to do one thing at a time. And you guys are a wonderful support group as it says in one of the chapters. Oh, my eyes drive me crazy. And I have allergies-use eye drops sometimes. Lots of mold around. I have cataracts too so I get concerned but too early to operate. I have been cleaning big time-having some people over to celebrate Brad's retirement Nov 2-great motivation to clean-do windows. But today I am going to walk and tomorrow swim. Called the hotel and they said they had water aerobics but I don't do well with those. We'll see. I am so much better since I take that med.Hope you are relaxing Meme. Bye Mima

Happy....I think when I am in a flareup that my eye muscles weaken. And in a few weeks when I crawl out of this hole, they will be fine.
A bug blew through my work. Lot of people going home with headache and chills. I had it last nite. Told people it is not much worse than how I usually feel!!!!
Mima....I think Dr Phil uses common sense and I like that. I wish that he would take the proceeds from his book and help a lot more really mobidly obese people get help.
The other night on 20/20 when they talked about the salaries of actors it made me sick. Raymond makes 1.8 million an episode. All of the cast of Friends make 1 million. There is no one on the face of this earth worth that kind of money. There are kids whose sports programs will be deleted from their school budget, there are kids homeless and starving, some elderly can't get prescriptions filled.....but TV actors are zillionares......

Ally that bugged me too aboutt he salaries, Teachers should make more than actors but that is not they way things are set up!

Beautiful picture Happy! My DH is fine with nothing being done but it bugs me so I do it! He figures I do not work outside the home and he does.......he does not care how I feel unless it interfers with the woopee time!

Mima..I get gas too when I eat, some days things don't bother me and other days it is like everything bothers me and the bloating..oh my....well poop!

Hi Joanne, anna and Meme:wave:

Been trying to suck up the lady bugs with the sweeper that are in the house and it hurts my neck to reach up high so I'm having headaches:( Trying to not over do in the yard...does this mean we are getting old since we all get stiff:lol:

The dog had a realy bad day Monday and so did I but she is back up and moving again, we are talking again about putting her down, you can here her bones rub together when she walks (we think that is the noise we are hearing) She has lost so much muscle from not being active. DH still thinks she is fine and will not make the appointment..it is all up to me!

Candice-sorry about the dog. Ally-I know about getting a virus-you just feel achier than you normally do-sometimes you don't even know you are sick. I didn't take my med last night hoping I would sleep late-wrong!! And Brad woke me up to tell me the Sox won and I styaed awake for a while then. Going swimming today-that should help-went to find a Speedo bathing suit at Sam's and they were gone. I'm afraid to buy online because of the size and will it fit. Maybe someone still has one in the stores. I had to throw the other one away because it was too loose-all stretched out/ It's going to be gorgeous today-high 70's. Bye for now Mima

Happy- Thanks for the picture. We don't have those areas down here although we do have different ones. It is still 85 here.
Ally - You are so right. They tax us to death to just get a few things for the state. I imagine it is the same everywhere. Some elderly are having to decide between food and meds. Child care is at it's lowest. And this new thing,"no child left behind" is stuffing the pockets of many. It is all coming out of the woodwork here in Fl. The children are having a rough time of it in the schools. Rural schools are the worst to be left out of the stream.
Candice- It is unlikely that the teachers (esp. in Fl.)will ever make what they are worth. They have always been on the Mid/ low end of pay scale. Take care of that problem with your dog.. It is rare for a man to jump in when you need help unless ,it is his woopee time.. I have learned to say, this is not your day.
Mima- Tops tonight.. I am hoping for a loss. It is so hard for me to lose. I guess meds and age has a lot to do with it..
Bye...Joanne
