But I Don't Want to Wait THAT Long
by Charles Burke
Years ago I worked in a camera shop with a man named Sam who was constantly bemoaning his bad luck. He often talked about Mr. Dawson, a man in his seventies who was really lucky. Dawson owned buildings all over the western suburbs of Chicago.
One day when he mentioned Dawson, I commented, "Hey, Sam, you're only thirty-five now. Why don't you start buying buildings this year? By the time you're seventy-five you'll have become as rich as Dawson."
He glared at me and stated huffily, "But I don't want to wait THAT long."
It took me a while to figure it out: Sam didn't want to BECOME rich. He wanted to BE rich. No time delay, no learning, no work.
The last time I saw Sam, fifteen years later, he was fifty and still working in a camera shop for about the same pay. Still not wanting to wait.
The point here is obvious, so I won't belabor it.
However, if you have ambitions for greater wealth, here are 5 tips I've personally found useful.
1. Find somebody who's doing it
I'd never had much success until I met John, who said he'd lived in Japan for years and had made good money there.
After he returned to Japan, he phoned and invited me to come on over, too. "There's lots of work and the pay's terrific," he told me.
I didn't quite believe it would work for me, but I tried it anyway. And that was the start of a great new career - and leap in income.
I found success by following the example of somebody who was already succeeding.
2. Feel like you DESERVE success
If there's something inside you that feels you don't deserve good things, it'll try to sabotage you at the most unexpected times.
Old habits may pop back up to dilute your energies. Or you might start unintentionally alienating your most important employees, customers or suppliers.
There are a million ways to defeat yourself when you don't feel you deserve success.
How do you lock in a feeling of deserving?
Some people set aside a certain amount of time to devote to worthy causes. Others donate a tithe of their income to charity or church. Still others meditate on their oneness with their Creator.
The best approach for you will be the one that satisfies your own inner need for reassureance and a feeling of worth.
3. You're not ENTITLED to success
A common wrong turn is the attitude of entitlement.
Please understand, life does not OWE you or me anything.
It strews untold riches and joys at our feet, but it's up to us to recognize them, to reach down and pick them up.
Russell Conwell was famous for telling the story of a man who sold his farm and went off in search of diamonds. He traveled the world for decades without success.
But the man who bought that farm from him found one of the largest diamond deposits ever discovered on the African continent. The black sand in the stream running through his property was loaded with diamonds, and he became enormously wealthy.
The first man had sold his land for nearly nothing and walked away from the riches that life had literally strewn at his feet. True story, by the way.
4. Sometimes it's a grind
Most times, opportunities come in kit form. You ask life for a chance at becoming rich, and circumstances send you a problem or a puzzle.
You may notice that many other people have that same problem. Once you solve it for yourself, you can then make a very nice profit helping other people to quickly overcome the same difficulty.
Life has just given you a rich opportunity. It does that all the time, but mostly we don't notice because we're so busy griping about what a grind life is, what a raw deal we have.
5. Be thankful in advance
It's just as simple as managing well what you've already got. Appreciate and be thankful for the things you already have. Love the people who are already in your life.
Then, just to prime the pump, be thankful for even more than you have - for stuff you haven't received yet.
It is said that nature abhors a vacuum.
When you give thanks - real, soul-lifting, jubilant thanks - for things you don't have yet, nature rushes in to fill that vacuum.
It'll fill that void with all the things and qualities and people that are bubbling joyously in your heart and mind.
Of course, you can say, "Nah, it can't be that simple," lay this aside and surf on to the next site.
Or you can try these ideas.
If you do try, I believe you'll discover that life is EAGER to hand you more of what you want.
To summarize, you can simply:
1. Follow in the footsteps of somebody who's already successful. They can save you countless wrong turns.
2. Master those feelings that you don't deserve good things. Make sure your success benefits others even more than it does you.
3. Accept that life doesn't owe you anything - besides you're not yet recognizing all that it's offering you now.
4. Remember that some assembly may be required. Ask life for a cake and it may hand you flour, water, sugar and eggs.
5. Be thankful BEFORE you receive. After ordering a book from Amazon, you relax and believe it's on its way. Why not start trusting life as much as you trust Amazon?
beachfan37 07-28-2003, 08:56 AM :strong: Hello Everyone
I love Mondays...it's the start of the new week and to me, it means anything I have done last week that I was not happy about I can forget and start anew! Here is my contribution to Motivational Monday:
Eliminate A Bad Habit
"We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence then, is not an act,
but a habit -"
- Aristotle -
How many little counter productive things do we do each day as a matter of course just because of little bad habits we have developed that have gone uncorrected? Bad habits are like parasites, they subtly eat away at us and we tolerate it because it is easier than making a change. They become part of our routine, always present, almost like a familiar friend.
Correcting or eliminating a bad habit is easy. It’s just like all other self-change, you have to start with wanting to change. The first step is acknowledgement. Identify the fact that you have a bad habit and recognize all the subtle little ways it holds you back or interferes with your life. The next step is commitment. Commit yourself to eliminating the counterproductive habit that you have identified. Don’t be wishy washy about it either, develop some determination about your task.
The easiest way to eliminate a bad habit is to replace it with a good habit. Replace smoking with deep breathing exercises, replace always being late with always being early, replace procrastination with a “Do it NOW” attitude, replace fretting with peaceful meditation. You get the idea. At first it takes a conscientious effort to make the substitution, in a short time the substituted activity becomes the habit.
The bottom line is, identify the bad habit, accept that it does exist and commit to making a change. You have to want to make a change, take stock in yourself, work to your betterment You’re worth it!
:) Lately I've really been trying to work on creating new habits. Eating right, excercising, not losing my temper , and seeing work as positive and something I love (which is how I use to feel).
Today is my weigh in day for Weight Watchers (I combine it with SB) and I've lost a pound which makes a total of 20 since I started back.
Well I have to go get ready for work. Everyone have a great day :p

Toni48 07-28-2003, 09:59 AM Good Monday morning. I love the motivation this morning. Yours to Beachfan. I feel ready to start the week. Didn't do so good on Sat. but yesterday was a great day. Just need to start on that water allot better. Anyway have a wonderful day everyone.
Beachfan- Congradulations on the 1lb. loss.
Good Morning everyone! I'll bet you all thought I was was lost forever. Or maybe it's been so long you just don't remember me at all. Either case, I'm back! Sorry it's been so long.
I spoke with Deb before she left for vacation & she encouraged me to get back to the board, even if it's just to say hello. I've been struggling with my weight as I know the rest of you are. I'm discouraged cause I've just got out of the habit of good, responsible eating & have gained about 15 lbs.
I believe alot of it has come from all the trouble I was having at work. I have since quit my job & am now doing private duty work which is alot less stressful, but it is very confining, so Iam not as active. Where I was running up & down hallways before, I'm in a 10 x 12 room (at best) for 12 hrs a day, 3 days a week. Yes, I am off the other 4 days, but I have not been able to get back into a routine of exercising, especially with the heat . Alot of excuses, huh?
Well, I'm giving it another try. I know I can't just give up because that is defeat & certain failure & I'm not ready for that. :)
Beachfan, I heard you were back. Loved the MM thought you posted. I can really relate to your comment "seeing work as positive and something I love (which is how I use to feel)." That sounds alot like what I was going through with my job. I really hated to give up on it, but it got to whee I could no longer put up with all the stress & felt it would not get better, so I left.
Rosalie, great job on getting the board up & running! Have missed being here to be part of it all.
Rosalie 07-28-2003, 10:41 AM Good Morning All
I had a feeling that there was something missing when I started the board last night and I've just realized that I didn't post the challenges. So here they are.
THIS WEEKS CHALLENGES
The usual challenges of DRINKING YOUR WATER and drinking AT LEAST 64 OUNCES is ongoing, as is getting in 3 DAYS OF EXERCISE and posting it on the WEEKLY EXERCISE BOARD
THIS WEEKS NEW CHALLENGE:
Last week we were posting what we had for lunch. How about this week posting at least one day (or more if you wish) what you had for an legal SB dinner. :burger: :chicken: :chef:
Beachfan - Liked your MM to-day.
Toni - I too need to get back on track this week after messing up a couple of days last week. Here's to a new week and a new resolve.
Melf - Good to see you. Sorry to hear about all the stresses you have had at work and the weight gain but I'm sure if you get back op those extra pounds will come off. Also hope you can find the time and motivation to get some exercise, which we all know is so important. Hope you are enjoying your new job. I know private duty is so different than working on the floor. I tried it once and found it much too confining. Anyway I'm a lady of leisure now - temporarily at least - as I retired in February but will be taking a temporary job soon. I've got lots of activities going but I need something to keep the mind active too.
Gotta go. Have a few chores to do before I head out to the stores, then to badminton.
Have a good day everyone.
Marie.
GatorGal 07-28-2003, 11:05 AM Hi everyone,
Hope your week starts great!! Good MM today. I have just ordered a book called The Power To Change Your Life, by Rick Warren. I hope it will be one big MM. :)
I got my 3 miles in today. Actually, I walked a new route and my pedometer showed almost 4 miles, but I think my pedometer was off a little bit.
Beach--I really liked your MM. I have been struggling with a bad habit that occurs every Sunday evening. We get together with a small group of people from our church and we have a meal together and then a study time and then prayer. It is really nice to have people that know each other better than the usual "Hi, how are you?" on Sunday mornings at church service. However, for the meal, everyone brings something, so it is a little potluck supper. Two couples normally bring "tons" of food, usually gooey desserts and fried chicken or something similar. It's all the stuff that are on the top of my "love to eat list." So, most every Sunday I am faced with the temptation that I normally don't resist. Even when I fix something that is SB legal, I give in to that piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie, etc.
I even snack before we get together. So far, that has not helped.
So, any suggestions from anyone?? What do I substitute??
I am even thinking about dropping out of the group, or only attending every other Sunday. I don't want to say, "would you quit bringing yummy food, even though everyone else loves it. You must only bring SB legal food."
Well, I haven't had breakfast yet, so will talk to you all later.
cherylco 07-28-2003, 11:07 AM Melf
Welcome back! Deb is a good little shepard. She makes sure her little flock doesn't stray very far :)
I swear it's so unfair to be a girl. TOM is due any day and I'm up 5 freaking pounds!! I haven't changed my eating so I know it's not me. It just blows to be fatter one week out of the month because of gender.
On the good side DH is following SB very well. One week today and he said his pants were loser this morning. He also said he's feeling better. He had a terrible coke cola habit. He'd drink at least a six pack a day. Add a 6-pack of beer to the equation and yuck! He switched to diet coke and cranberry and vodka when he drinks so that's better. of course not drinking would be best. One bad habit at a time!
Zanne 07-28-2003, 11:17 AM As usual, I'm just popping in. I've been on and off my exercise and eating properly. Had company on the weekend and ate a bunch of stuff I shouldn't have and am paying for it today by feeling really bloated.
I have to get back to my exercise routine. It seems the most I have been able to do is about 4 times a week. Then I slack off on the weekend. DH was on nights for a few weeks and it kind of threw me off too. So now that I'm back to getting up before 6am, I should be able to do my workouts first thing in the morning. The exercise has been working ---last week DH told me my butt is looking good! :D :smug: Nice compliment to keep the motivation up.
I'm sure there are a couple of people like me who are "starting over" today. This isn't a Motivational piece, but since I'm here so erractically, I thought I'd share it now. Always good to be reminded of things.
Sugar Addicts Anonymous: The 12 Step Program to Beating Sugar Addiction
By James Keller
Watkins Enhancing Lives Since 1868.
Most of us don't realize it, but we are drug addicts. Our drug comes in a pure, white crystal or powder form. We use it even when we don't know we're doing it. It's in salad dressing, peanut butter, soup, pickles, bread, jam, yogurt, canned fruits and vegetables... We crave it after every meal. On an average, each of us consumes about 130 lbs. per year. What is this controversial drug, you ask. It goes by many names, but the most common is sugar.
This deliciously sweet substance is also deliciously devoid of any nutritional value. Sugar passes through the wall of the stomach so quickly that it causes blood sugar levels to skyrocket, then plummet just as rapidly. I'm sure you are familiar with the feeling.
The problem that arises in coping with sugar addiction is that sugar is in so many common foods now, it's practically impossible to cut it out completely. You can't eat a sandwich without getting sugar from the bread or the mayo. You can't eat a salad without getting sugar from the dressing.
Beating sugar addiction may seem like a hopeless battle, but just like any drug addiction, you have to have a structured plan to win the war. I make no claims that it will be an easy battle. You won't be vomiting in back alleys or shivering in bed all night, but you will have the uncontrollable desire for something, anything that will give you your sugar fix.
Here is your twelve step program to beating sugar addiction. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it:
1. Stick to foods that are closest to their original form. Instead of eating corn from a can, eat corn on the cob. Banish white bread and embrace wheat bread. Forget fruit juices; go for the actual fruit. The closer a food is to it's original form, then less processed sugar it will contain.
2. Eat protein with breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you know why? Breakfast is the meal that will make or break you for the rest of the day. Your first meal must create blood sugar stability that will carry you to the next meal without sugar cravings.
3.Eat protein with every meal. As soon as your blood sugar is thrown out of whack, you will be off the wagon again. Eating protein with each meal prepares your body for the increase of seratonin production and keeps your blood sugar stable throughout the day.
4. Read Labels! It's incredible how many things we put into our mouths without the slightest idea what is in them. The longer the list of ingredients, the more likely sugar is going to be included on that list.
5.Don't starve yourself in order to reward your restraint with a donut or a Twix. Not only is this bad for your body, but you won't lose weight. Your body will just go into starvation mode, storing all your calories as fat. So that slice of chocolate cake you eat after a seven hour fast is going straight to fat.
6. Keep a journal of what you eat. You will be surprised, and probably shocked, by the amount of sugar-filled snacks and extras involved in your diet. Write down everything, down to those five M&Ms or that tablespoon of teriyaki sauce.
7. Brown is beautiful: brown rice, wheat bread, brown cereals, etc... Brown foods give your body the positive effects of carbohydrates without unbalancing your blood sugar and creating cravings.
8. Be active and keep busy. Most of us snack the most when we are bored and inactive. Go for a walk. Go shopping. Organize your entire house. Anything to keep your hands busy and away from the cookie jar.
9. Eat a potato before bed. Before your head explodes from the thought of eating a starchy, carbohydrate-filled potato right before bed, consider this: when taken with the right vitamins, that spud will increase your production of seratonin, balancing your blood sugar levels. Besides, it's better than eating ice cream before bed.
10. Try a detox program. Detoxing isn't just for yoga yogis and Enya junkies anymore. There are dozens of detox programs designed for health enthusiasts of all levels. Some last two days, some last two months. But they all have one thing in common: after the initial overwhelming sugar cravings, your body adjusts and you won't even want the sugar anymore.
11. Drink water constantly. The more water you drink, the more your body will be fooled into thinking it is not hungry. Plus, you can rest assured that there is not a grain of sugar in water.
12. Don't get down on yourself if you slip and eat a desert every once in a while. It's okay to reward yourself, just don't start the addiction all over again. There are always healthier options for deserts. Eat berries with some low-calorie whipped topping. Snack on a couple of graham crackers. Maybe you would be healthier if you cut out sugar altogether forever, but people who do things in moderation get the best of both worlds. Enjoy your life, but don't overdo it.
I hope everyone is keeping well. Maybe once school starts back in September, I'll get on here more.
Have a good day all!
Toni, HI! We must have been posting at the same time earlier.
Rosalie, sounds like a retirement plan that I could live with. LOl Hope to make it that long & be able to enjoy retirement one day. DH has 4 hears left before he retires, so I'll be another 7 I guess. I do plan to take it & enjoy what life there is left! But until then I'll deal with it.
GatorGal! HI!! Girl, I know what you mean about the get to gethers & the eating frenzies. It's always so tempting to give in to all the goodies. I didn't for a long time. That's when I was doing well & loosing. This morning I'm 4 lbs heavier than yesterday morning because of lunch outing after church, then a fellowship after evening worship last night. Any everyone always brings something that I can't seem to resist!
cherylco, Thanks for the welcome back! Great to hear that your dh is doing Sb also! Mine eats anything I fix so it makes it alot easier on me. Now If I can just straighten up my act! ;)
Pancho 07-28-2003, 12:10 PM Good Monday morning all:
This is a very brief motivational Monday saying, but still important:
Tonight I will go to bed and celebrate the things I accomplised today instead of beating myself up over the things I did not get accomplished!
Last night for dinner, I had grilled chicken, green beans and salad. I bought a new dressing by Annie's Naturals; it is called ****ake & Sesame Viniagerette, and it is delicious. I usually eat Ranch, and it was a nice switch. Tonight I will be going to Fuddruckers with some friends, so will probably have a salad, or burger with all the fixens', no bun.
I will be heading out soon...have to take daughter to swim lessons, go by Wild Oats for a few things, take my youngest to the doctor for her well-check, and get back home and get ready to go out tonight.
Beach: Our computer is 4-5 years old as well, and is very slow; I'd love to get a new one. Enjoy yours. Thanks for the Motivational thoughts this morning.
Teensy: You deserved to have a little splurge; you've done so well! I know what you mean about getting that exercise in during the morning hours; it sets your entire day up to be a better day!
groovia: Welcome. I hope you find all the answers to your questions here.
Rosalie: Hope the meal was yummy! At least you know for next time. Thanks for getting us up and going again this week!
Melf: Welcome Back!
Zanne: Thanks for the information. It was very enlightening.
Have a great day, everyone!
Fillise 07-28-2003, 12:16 PM Hi! This will be just a short pop-in to let you know that (1) I'm still alive and (2) I'm still on the road.
I'm back in Wilmington now. Am leaving for Kinston this afternoon. Will be back tomorrow night and will head for Auburn on Thursday. I will have been gone for three weeks on Wednesday--and I'm ready to head home. I miss the board and everyone here and am looking forward to catching up with everyone!
While at Montreat I was a sugar-holic, but I guess all that walking up and down mountains balanced it out and I actually lost a couple of pounds! Go figure. Anyway, now that I'm down off the mountain I'm back to better nutritional habits.
Just wanted to say hey to everyone and let you know I will be back on the board soon!
Susan
groovia 07-28-2003, 12:17 PM Good morning! I just joined last night, so there is an intro msg from me on last week's thread.
I've been sugarbusting since Friday and the last 2 days I have felt horrible as soon as 5pm rolls around. Fine ALL day, and then BAM! evenings are awful.
I get very weak/lightheaded and a nasty headache. It gets so bad, I can't concentrate on anything. i can't even turn on the tv, because it just aggravates me more.
What I'm wondering: is this sugar withdrawal? Is it normal to have symptoms like this? Saturday, I just stayed miserable, but yesterday, I decided to eat a clementine (like a small orange) and it really seemed to help.
Any thoughts on this? is it going to last long?
Thanks,
Kelly
groovia 07-28-2003, 12:49 PM I was researching glucagon and I found this in regard to body shapes:
http://www.totalhealthdynamics.com/bodyshap.htm
and since I'm already sharing my research, I also found something on the relationship between sugar and arthritis:
http://www.e-clipse.com/dsugararticle.htm
Please forgive me if this is already common knowledge stuff- it's just that SugarBusters seems to be a huge revelation since my entire family (generations and generations) is (and were) apple shaped, dies before age 60 of heart disease, is prone to arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.
It's terribly exciting, you know, to think that eating low-sugar will combat all these health issues, since eating low-fat does nothing for us.
Kelly
GatorGal 07-28-2003, 01:50 PM Here is another picture of my butterflies--this one before it becomes a butterfly. This is the larval stage of a monarch butterfly. I have about 7 monarch caterpillars in my butterfly raising cage, and they are munching on the only food they like to eat: milkweed. It is amazing to see how fast these grow; these are barely a week old. It is also amazing to realize that those beautiful deep orange and black butterflies come from these white, yellow and black caterpillars.
GatorGal 07-28-2003, 01:59 PM Quilter--It worked!! I posted the above picture by clicking on "small" and 3FC actually didn't object to the size. :)
Thanks for your help and your suggestions.
The hardest part about posting butterfly pictures is that it is very difficult to catch the butterflies sitting still. I've taken a few pictures, but they all were out of focus with the digital camera. I got the above pictures after taking 8 shots. This was the first in focus. When you do close-ups with a camera, I guess things are "touchy."
Anyway, I find the caterpillars pretty interesting, but if anyone objects to the images, please say so and I won't post them. I know caterpillars might be objectionable to some, and don't want to gross anyone out.
The chrysalis that this caterpillar will make is absolutely beautiful. It is jade green with a thin gold band across the front. The gold is so bright it looks like 24ct. It reminds me of something that I would wear on a gold chain. If I can get a good picture of one when they pupate, I will post it.
I had my fav breakfast today. SB pancakes topped with a fresh peach and some raspberries. Then some iced tea to top off the meal.
Oops, the tree man is here. Gotta go.
bashful8 07-28-2003, 03:03 PM Hi!
I just found you. And I need some help, if you don't mind!
I started cutting out sugar and following SB just under two weeks ago. It has not been as hard as I thought it would be (I actually like wheat and wheat products, who would have thought:D). I think part of what has made it easier is that my DH is doing it with me (at least when he's in me presence) and he's really encouraging me to buy the right foods. Despite this I am having a few issues::(
1) I am having trouble finding a lot of different SB legal foods where I live, the stores just don't seem to stock things that aren't made with a ton of sugar. SO I was wondering if any one lives in LI, NY and could offer some advice as to where to go for SB legal foods? I am also wondering if anyone has order any foods off the internet and if they have any suggestions for good sites that don't charge a lot for shipping.
2) The scale keeps going up and down. I loose two, gain two, loose four and then gain 2. Now that may seem like a lot of weighing for two weeks, but I used to weight everyday when I was op (of any kind) so this is a lot better for me. I also know I am PMS this week but I'm worried that it something else. like eating too much or eating hidden sugar. DId anyone else go through this in the beginning and then have better luck (consistency) when they went on?
3)I am having some trouble when it comes to eating out at restaurants or friends homes and ordering in (we usually wind up doing this 1-2 times a week b/c of our crazy schedules). Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make good chioces about food (you didn't cook), so that I don't have to feel like I can never eat out or order in again. It's really been stressing me out.
Thank you all in advance for your help. This board really seems to be supportive of each other and I think that can be a great resource in this crazy time.
Good luck to everyone this week:)
jecrites 07-28-2003, 03:30 PM Hi everybody.
Boy, it's been a while since I've been on here. We were gone the whole last week. We went to Arkansas to pick the kids up from their 2 week visit with their grandma and aunt. They had fun, and it was nice to have the house to myself. Now we're getting ready to go back to school!
Not much has happened, I haven't been eating right, but now that things may be starting to slow down, I hope to get back in control of that. I'll be able to do more exercise after school starts back. It's hard to try to do anything with the girls at home all the time.
Well I just wanted to check in real fast and let everyone know that I'm still here, just been really busy and not at home. Gotta go for now. Talk to y'all later.
Jenn
Rosalie 07-28-2003, 03:43 PM Hi Everyone
This is just a quickie to let you all know that I have heard from Debbie. She is not able to get on the board either to read or post as her cousin is having problems with her computer. The only thing available to her is e-mail. She has decided to stay away a little longer so probably won't be back until the middle of next week. She says hello to everyone. This is part of what she wrote:
"Can't get on the site so can't post or even read. Please tell everyone I say hello. Eating has been horrifying. Everything I thought I'd do I did quite the opposite. I haven't had a nutritious meal since I left home, only junk, junk and more junk. I am trying today to get back on track, I've gained a ton (at least 10lbs) and nothing fits me and I'm soooo uncomfortable! "
She's asked me to start the boards again next week which I have told her I would do.
For any newbies who have just joined us this week Debbie is our Moderator who is away on vacation for a couple of weeks. So if the board seems a bit slow this is part of the reason. Also a couple of our regular members are also away.
Will try to get back on later for some replies.
Marie.
GatorGal 07-28-2003, 04:56 PM Groove--It's hard to say why you are crashing about 5 pm, unless we saw what you were eating during the day. Perhaps you could post what you eat.
If you eat lunch at noon, perhaps 5 hours is too long to wait between eatings. You might consider having a protein snack about 4 pm. before you get that "crashed" feeling. A snack might include peanut butter on some apple wedges or on celery sticks or WW toast, some nuts and a peach, a small bowl of soup, some leftover chicken on WW bread, etc.
Definitely don't let yourself get to feeling miserable right before all the "dinner action" starts. SB is not supposed to be miserable.
As for me, I tend to get a "low" feeling about 4pm, so I take a break, sit down with some tea and fruit and cheese and give myself an energy boost.
Good luck.
Teensybean 07-28-2003, 05:03 PM Good morning all-- well, it was still morning when I started reading this!
Hubbie left for his fishing trip at 3:30 this morning. So I will have the house to myself for a couple of days. Started shampooing the livingroom carpet and am just taking a break. Can you say 3 dogs??? I always seem to get so much done when I am here by myself.
Brant called last night, and he ended up taking second place in the bullriding. (Actually him and another guy tied for second.) He got beat out with a 72, and it was on the same bull he rode on Friday. Last year he took first here, but second is okay. He has another one on this Friday, but I am not going to it.
Rosalie-- Thanks again for filling in for Deb, and getting us up and running!! Sorry her plans for staying OP didn't work.
Beach--Congrats on the loss. Twenty pounds is wonderful. You are melting away!! Yeah!!!!
Toni-- Good Morning!!
Melf-- Welcome Back. You CAN do this. One step at a time. And you know that it works!!
Gator-- It is tough on us when there are no good choices to make. Maybe you could just make sure that you bring a dish that is okay for you to eat, then you will atleast have that. That is what I do on Saturdays when my family all gets together. Some days I can eat everything there, and other days I only eat what I brought. I know its hard, but look at the results!! Great picture of the caterpillar.
Cherylco-- I feel the same way. And I am at the age where I never know when or for how long!! And it sucks!!
Zanne-- I workout 5 days a week, and then take the weekends off. I like the two days off. Great article!!
Pancho-- That salad dressing sounds great. I need to find a good one, I have just been using red wine vingegar, because everything I look at has either added sugar, or a million grams of fat!! My sister is here from Nevada, maybe I can get her to go with me to the big mall where there is a big HFS.
Fillise-- Hope you are having a great time. Congrats on the loss. That's awesome, and doubly so since you are on the road!!
Groovia-- WELCOME!! Sounds like sugar withdrawal to me. You are allowed to eat fruits, so if that helped, by all means eat fruit.
Bashful-- WELCOME TO SUGAR BUSTER'S! I live in Washington state, and don't seem to have alot of the stuff that those back east have. I just do the best I can. Have ordered a few things on line, but not too many. As for the eating out, I don't do alot of that so someone else will have to help you there. Any lean meat and salad will work, and most vegetables. I am sure someone will be along to answer that right away for you. Sorry I can't help you.
Jec- Welcome back, hope you had a nice trip!!
Well, I better get back to the shampooing!! Back this evening!!
beachfan37 07-28-2003, 05:50 PM Hi All
Rosalie: Thanks for keeping us going. We miss Deb but you are doing a great job of keeping us all on track. The board has really picked up today. :)
Toni: Thanks for the kind words. My motivational thoughts are usually things I really need to work on
Melf: Welcome back. Yes, I came back too. It keeps me on track and helps me remember the important things in life. Like you my job is helping other people and it can be very stressful. I'm lucky that my boss has let me take a break and I am temporarily in a less stressful role. It won't last but since we have such high burnout...they try to help us when they can. I'm feeling better now that I am back here and taking care of myself first. Hope things get better for you. We are here to help! :grouphug:
Gator: If you love your small prayer group don't give it up. Fellowship is so important. Maybe you can take a yummy legal SB dessert and concentrate on having that. Susan's cobbler would be a good one to try. I know how hard it must be to resist, I love good food. Being hungry isn't when I over eat...I over eat when something is very good. Try and see if you can counter the temptation by taking something you really want.
Cherylco: I know how you feel about the TOM...I just finished. Remember those pounds will drop once it is over. Hang in there.
:balloons:
 Zane: Thanks for the 12 points on breaking the surgar habit. We've missed you.
Pancho: There are some great deals out there on PCs. I bought mine for less than $500 that included a monitor.
Fillise: WE MISS YOU. Glad your vacation is going well. Mine was wonderful and I also lost because of the extra excercise. See you soon.
Grovia and Bashful: Welcome :sunny: You find all the support you need here. Some answers to your questions. As for headaches, I agree with Gator. Eat an OP snack before you have the sinking feeling. Cheese, peanut butter, triscuits, fruit anything. On SB, I usually am never hungry. I have blood sugar problems and the SB eating keeps it in line. The key is to know when you usually get those sinking spells and eat before it happens. This should prevent the headaches. My doctor actually recommended this WOL to help prevent my migraines.
If you are having trouble finding OP food, then see if the Information Board can help. There are a lot of foods already in stores that are leagal such as Pepperidge Farm 9 grain bread, triscuits, ww cheerios, etc. When looking for condiments etc. look for food with less than 3 g of sugar. Also, see if you can find health food stores. Debbie is the queen of knowing how to find the right food. She will be back soon (next week) and can help somemore.
Several of us have chosen to count calories or combine this WOE with Weight Watchers. I try and keep a limit to my calories eating 1300-1500 calories a day. This is based on my current weight and activity level. www.fitday.com is a great website to log your food and determine the amount of calories you need to have to lose weight.
I eat out all the time. I stick to grilled fish, chicken and sometimes hamburgers. I avoid rice and potatos and eat a salad or veggies. A lot of the restraunts now have sweet potatos and they are legal.
Grovia: I'm an apple...loved the info. Thanks for posting it.
Teensy: I love it when the house is empty. That is the time when I can really get so much done. I don't mind cleaning when I know it will stay clean longer than 1 second
Gotta run...hope I didn't miss anyone
Ellen 07-28-2003, 06:30 PM Just a quick check in. I am so tired, my eyes keep crossing, so I am going to take a bit of a nap.
I am not doing well, and getting rather frustated about it. I need to just stop the cheating and get back on track, but I am not doing well at that. We had a bunch of company last night to celebrate my older daughter's birthday, and I made spring rolls, moo shu pork, hot and sour soup, lion's head, and ponpon chicken. All were her requests. None of that was very legal, but I ate it all! I even finished off the meal with a piece of cake.
I worked today, and felt so crummy from the sugar and other no no's, I could barely make it through my shift! Coffee and ibuprofen were essentials! Tomorrow, I have to start fresh. I don't want to start gaining.
I am happy that my schedule has been changed, and now I am going to only be working three days. Next week, my starting time is going to be seven instead of six. What a difference an hour will make! I can't wait! I can actually go to bed at 10:00 and get enough sleep!
Tom just got home, so I need to go talk with him for a while. Wednesday is my next day off, so I will definitely be on then.
THE BIG ORANGE BABE 07-28-2003, 07:07 PM EVENING EVERY BUDDY!!!
It's another stormy evening over here on the West Coast of FLA.
Just finished fixing Kate and Skeeter their grub, so I'll see if I can get some posting in here.
Last night I fixed the best supper....Swiss Steak, squash casserole, fresh green beans (potatoes on top of the beans for Kate), and fresh made slaw! YUM YUM YUM!!!
WELCOME to our new BUSTERS....glad you're here and hope you stick around. We're a rowdy bunch most of the time and I think you'll fit right in...just pull up a chair and start pounding those keys!
I'm stitting here watching the STYLE network and there is a runway show on....I swear, if I was that skinny, there would be NO WAY I would wear some of those clothes.....
Hope everyone gets a chance to see THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE It's a wonderful movie, and I'll be surprised if it doesn't win some awards when the time comes.
New reality show Wednesday.....RACE TO THE ALTER.....I swear, this is getting out of hand...before you know it, there won't be ANYTHING on TV but these shows! Now, I like a few of them, but
how many more subjects can they come up with???
Sorry to hear about Debbie's eating problems, but vacation is vacation, and she can get right back on the wagon when she gets home. She's up there where all the good food is, and I'm sure her family is feeding her quite well! Hope Michael finds the school he's looking for.
I'm off to do a few chores....Hope everyone has a good evening
BOB
heartmom 07-28-2003, 07:28 PM Very quick hello- will try to post later.
The Quilter 07-28-2003, 07:30 PM Monday Night---
Just a quick check in to see how everyone faired on this Monday. I'm okay. I did go to the dr. today to talk with her about my constant stomach issues. She thinks it's irritable bowel syndrome and has prescribed some meds for me. I have to go back in a month. Do any of you suffer from this? I'm wondering what meds you are on and what you've found to be helpful. I already bought some FiberCon to help sweep things clean down there.
ROSALIE---Thanks for standing in for the Dungeon Mistress. You are doing a great job!
MELF---Oh my gosh, girl, you are doing the KimmySlide. Get back up on this wagon and we'll strap a belt around you. You can get back on track. Just take it easy and don't get down on yourself. It's part of being human to get things out of order. So you're back in the swing again now.
GATOR---Way to go with your picture. As soon as I saw it I was going to comment on how sharp and crisp and clear that picture is. I love the butterfly in all it's stages. You must have a really nice digital. We have a Konica and I like it a lot. I have a picture of me in my new tiedyed dress that I want to post. I may try clicking the small thing and see how that works.
MONET---Hey, girlfriend. Would you give me a swift kick to get back on the TM??? I need some not-so-friend prompting.
BOB---So sorry I was MIA for a while. I thought of you when I was in your beautiful Volunteer state. My gosh, what a gorgeous country they have down there. You should have seen where we are. I may try to post a picture of Laurel Fork Falls where we hiked to in Dennis Cove. Have you ever heard of that area?
Well, to the rest of you I must bid "hello" and "goodbye" for the evening. Take care you cuties. I hope to be on for a bit tomorrow to get on the chat.
Hugs to all.
Kim
The Quilter 07-28-2003, 07:44 PM Here's me in my tie dyed dress. Please overlook the no makeup look I'm sporting on my face. That's vacation face.
Kim
The Quilter 07-28-2003, 07:46 PM Here's the falls we hiked to in Dennis Cove called Laurel Fork Falls. It was beautiful and this picture doesn't do it justice.
K
GatorGal 07-28-2003, 09:41 PM Quilter-The dress is neat. Did you do the tie-dying? I'm really impressed if you did. You must be an arteest!! :)
OK--If SB is a WOE for life, and if we are not looking at this as a DIET, then why do we go hog wild on vacation? I'm sad Debbie is having problems with the eating, because I know how hard she worked to get to goal. I want her down to 129 again!! And I mean it!!!
This is a practical lesson to all of us that somehow we must change our mind set, our attitude, and realize that we are not on a special regime that we can't wait to get off of. This is really for life because it is healthy, and there are so many ways we can enjoy food and still be on plan. For those of us who still have pounds to go before reaching goal, this means that we will have to be vigilent about portions and, yes, probably calories. But after goal, we can still be eating good wholesome food, with the occasional ice cream, pie, or whatever, and not totally fall off the wagon.
I'm telling myself this as much (probably more) than anybody else. It's something that I need to get ingrained into my way of thinking. I need to have an "attitude adjustment" so that I will be successful if I ever do reach my goal of 120.
As you can tell from my first post today, I struggle, like Debbie and all of us, with being "on a diet" or eating SB as a way of life.
I have some Eastern Black Swallowtail larvae (caterpillars) in the garden munching on the parsley, and a couple are big enough to be going into pupal stage soon. I may bring them into the butterfly raising screen box so I can keep an eye on them. If I do, I will try to take a picture of one of them so you can see another variety. They are somewhat similar to the monarchs, except that they have green on them. BTW, the picture that is posted is just about life size. Maybe a teeny bit smaller, but the caterpillars are now about 1 1/2 " long.
Lunch today: hamburger!!
4 oz. Maverick brand ground beef from Publix (no hormones, steroids, and antibiotics, and LOW fat)
1/2 WW pita bread, mustard, catsup, onion, lettuce, tomato.
Snack: 1 small scoop vanilla/raspberry ice cream.
Dinner:
6 oz. tilapia marinated in Tequila-Lime marinade, which I later reduced and used as a sauce.
small green salad with orange segments and bit of fresh grated cheese
Ratatouille
In all, I ate about 1000 calories, I think.
The herbal iced tea with fresh lime and stevia really helps get me through the day. It is so refreshing and I feel like I am giving myself a treat.
Melf--It's good to see you again. Hop on the ole wagon with all of us.
Monet--Be good now. You can do this! You are my idol, so get back on that wagon and get down to your goal.
BOB--What's that movie about?
Gotta go.
CountryMom4Him 07-28-2003, 10:43 PM Man did we have a great walk tonight. Day number 8 of walking an hour a day...and about 3 to 4 miles a night. I LOVE having a walking buddy. I was sooooo lazy this evening and was gonna bug out but didn't want to do that to her. She was feeling tired and didn't want to bail on me...a win win situation. :) Yesterday eating was the pits but it's better today. I hate that the scales are staying the same or slightly going up. I want the good old days of going down to come back. Oh well, it'll happen.
Kim...what a neat dress. The picture of the falls came out so nice. I'd love to use it if you don't mind. I think it would make a pretty graphic. It sure is good to have you back at the board. You always make me smile.
Rosalie...thank you so much for keeping the boards going and keeping us ladies motivated and in line. You are appreciated.
Monet....that dinner made me hungry. I think I need a snack now..LOL Glad your schedule is gonna work better for you now. An hour makes a big difference.
WELCOME Grovia and Bashful!!!!! These ladies are the greatest. Bashful, I don't buy a lot of special foods to eat SB. Fresh fruits and veggies.....meat and cheese....I do buy stoneground whole wheat bread (Cobblestone Mill) It's not the lowest sugar bread but one I truly enjoy. Sometimes I get Natures Own sugar free bread. If you have a Wal-Mart they can order you some WW pasta's if they don't have them already. Mine in Texas carries some Hodsen Farm lazagna noodles that are very nice. Hunts makes a sugar free spagetti sauce in the can. Do you get Hunts up there?
Gator....thanks for sharing the photos. Now if we see a catapillar that looks like that we won't kill it. One day the kids found a butterfly in it's case and put it in a jar...would you believe it actually hatched. It was a Monarch. It was really neat watching it come to life. It was hard for the kids not to touch it while it was drying.
Bob...ya'll sure are getting the rain the last few days. Hope you don't float away. :)
Hey Heartmom!!
WB Melf!
Teensy...second place is great. To me any time they stay up on the bull is just awesome. Robert and I love to watch bull riding on the outdoor chanel. Last year we even went to the local rodeo here in town. That was really neat.
Jenn...hang in there. I think there are several of us who have not been eating like we should. We can do this..:)
I know I didn't get to everyone and I apologize. (((Hugzzz)))
Love,
Crystle
daisey_73 07-28-2003, 10:56 PM Hi everyone. I'm another newbie. I started SB on Saturday. I had been on Atkins for 2 months and lost 12 pounds. It felt really good to be in the 150's again. I decided to try SB because I have been having problems with my TOM and was afraid Atkins was making it worse, last week was horrible. I have been very tired and sluggish all day every day for about a month now. I feel so much better now after only a couple days. I have a couple questions. I should probably know the answers but I dont. How long after getting up in the morning should I have breakfast? I'm not much of a breakfast person and find it really hard to eat as soon as I get up. Also how long before I go to bed should I have my last snack? I go to bed at different times depending on how tired I am. Is there a certain amount of time that should pass between eating and going to bed? My last question for today is about Cool Whip (in the tubs) is it OK to eat on SB. I could eat it on Atkins and never had a problem and has become something that will get me through a sugar craving. I like it by itself or on on SF Jello (only a couple tbsp). I am looking forward to chatting with everyone. I have been reading the board all weekend and so I thought I would say hi and ask my questions. Everyone seems so friendly and willing to help. Well that's all for now. Talk to everyone later.
beachfan37 07-28-2003, 11:01 PM :) Hi All
Went for a long walk today. Felt so good but boy has it gotten how here. It was also muggy so I was dripping when I finished. Here is my dinner:
grilled chicken
asparagus with lemon juice and a dash of butter
brown rice
peaches for dessert
Gator as one who went to goal, lost 90 lbs and then gained more than half back, I think the big issue with weight loss and keeping it off or staying on track when on vacation is what you said. We can't think we are on a diet or that once we get there we can go back to the bad habits. The bad thing is I knew that maintaining would be very hard for me and I still let bad habits and my attitude win. I've really been reading about this since all of my life I have been able to lose but can not keep it off. I yo yo worse than anyone I know except for Ophra and Maria Carey. One of the things I've learned in my reading from scientific studies is that successful dieters who keep the weight off journal their food and keep up with the excercise. When on vacation, we don't want to write down everything we eat. After I hit goal, I stopped keeping track and slowly started eating wrong. Also, when you add too much sugar back it becomes addictive and makes you want to just eat more. It becomes a vicious cycle. You're right we all need to really work hard at making this a way of life and on vacation enjoy the vacation but still watch what we eat. We can all help each other and Debbie and everyone else through our group. The other thing that happened to me is I stopped posting here. I was embarassed to let all of you know how bad I was doing. So we can all do this! :D
Monet: Glad you will get more sleep! Hang in there. The sugar just makes you more sluggish. Eat a lot of protein...when I go off the wagon I will have one day where all I eat is protein.
Quilter: Loved the dress and the pictures of the falls. Having grown up in the northern part of Alabama and seeing all of the beauty in the hills of north Al and Tennessee I am always amazed when I see pictures like yours.
Everyone have a great day tomorrow.
Anna
beachfan37 07-28-2003, 11:07 PM Bob, Heartmom and Country...hi! I was busy thinking about Gator's comment and missed your posts :)
Daisy WELCOME: I believe in eating breakfast but there is no rule on how soon you should eat after waking up. I would eat when you are comfortable but not skip the meal. My understanding of the night time eating is to try and finish eating for the day by at least 7p.m. I've been doing this so long, I can't remember if that is in the book but I know it is something I learned somewhere :) As for the cool whip, I don't know. I never thought about it or looked to see if it was legal. Someone else will know!
Gatorgal Loved the pic of the caterpillar. It was very clear & I'm sure was difficult to take, but you did it! I agree with Beach, why not bring a SB dessert to your group meeting? That way you are more likely to eat that instead of other fatting ones. Worth a try! I've been doing the cottage cheese, sf jello, cool whip & mixed fruit (frozen). It's a really good dessert. My problem is that I eat too much of it. LOL
Bashful Welcome to the board! Glad you found us. This is a great place to be for support. One of the best things to do is learn to read labels. It's become a habit now. I never buy anything without looking at the label for hidden sugars. Even my dh does it now. If nothing else, you can always stick to proteins & veggies when eating out & someone else's cooking. Making the wisest choice is sometimes the best we can do.
jecrites, Glad to hear you had a safe trip.
Rosalie Sorry to hear that Deb is having such a rough time while she's away. I understand what she's up against! You're doing a great job filling in with the board!
Teensybean, Yes, I know that this woe works, I guess that's one of the reasons I'm so distressed ove the gain. I should be able to get back OP.
BeachFan, Thanks for the encouragement. Great that your boss was able to put you in a less stressful position for a while. I think if I can get back on track it will help me too... to feel better about myself. I fully agree with your last post. We let ourselves slip back into old habits when we reach goal & we shouldn't. Guilty as charged! I'll start journaling again tomorrow.
Monet, So sorry to hear you're not feeling well again. Hope you're up to par soon! Take care of yourself girl.
BOB, I  squash. We've been eating alot of it from the garden. Also fresh cantelope, cukes & tomatoes. Yum! Your supper of swiss steak, casserole & slaw sounds great. Friday we have company over for supper, so I put a brisket on the grill outside early in the am, let it cook all day, did some fresh veggies for salad & stir-fried some fresh zukes. I could have cooked 3 times the zukes I think & it would still not have been enough. They LOVED it.
QUILTER/Kim, Yea girl, you'll need a BIG strap to belt me on that wagon. But I'm going to do the best I can to hang on tight & get back on track. Hey I  the tie-dyed dress! No makeup?? Sure can't tell. I think I can hear that waterfall from here. Oh how I would love to be there. LOL
Country, 8 days of walking an hour a day!? Good for you! That should get the scale going down soon.
daisey_73, Welcome! Great to have you join us!
Well it's back to work tomorrow, so I'm out of here. I work 12 hrs on Tues, Wed, & Thurs, so I may not get to check in much during the week, but will if I get half a chance.
heartmom 07-28-2003, 11:48 PM I'm so glad I got on the computer tonight. I needed to read your posts. I've been having major problems trying to get back OP every since vacation. I've realized that my thinking must change, in the way I perceive this WOE. I haven't been this bad with my eating since last XMAS, and I gained 8 pounds. This time, it's 5. Yes, I put back on that pound that I thought I lost. I need the wagon NOW!! This is something I know I have to do on my own and only I can accomplish. So I'm starting anew! Time to sugar detox. If I can get thru 3 days totally OP and no more than 2 servings of starches, then I know I will be back on track and won't feel hungry all the time. Right now, with all the sugar in my system, I can't get full- I just eat and eat. Anyway, I'm starting fresh tomorrow with a clean slate and a different attitude about food, myself, and who's in control here. Someone mentioned about what to eat while out? Let's see- buffet's are great because you can eat salads and veggies, meat. Mexican- I always eat chicken fajitas without the tortillas with all the yummy toppings that come with it(including the beans). McDonald's- I LOVE the Grilled Bacon ranch salad with the ranch dressing. Wendy's- the taco supremo salad without the chips. Outback- Alice Spring's Chicken, salad, sweet potato without the brown sugar, steak etc.. The bread is NOT legal- it's honey wheat.
cherylco 07-29-2003, 12:44 AM Kelly glad you made it! When I started SB last year I must have went through a case of clemitine oranges every week!
I'm still excited about SB and am constantly having to remind myself to stop bugging everyone else to do it!
My husband finally started this week after seeing how well it's done for me and the kids.
Sounds like you need to have a snack around 5 to give you a boost.
DECREASING THE SUGAR IN OUR DIET article was good. I read stuff on sugar over and over. It help motivate me and I might pick up something new.
GatorGal
I think the pictures are cool. They look like Discovery channel shots! LOL
bashful8
Welcome!
I live in Connecticut and go to Trader Joe's all the time. Most health food stores have lots of food that's legal.
When you eat out don't eat the bread! If you get a cheeseburger, take off the bun. Most restaurants push potatoes, ask if you can substitute a veggie for the evil potato. If they give you flak tell them your diabetic and can't eat potatoes because of the high glycimic levels. If they don't want to substitute don't eat there again! Salads with steak or chicken are great out. I eat out 2 or 3 times a week. You get the hang of it.
I weigh myself everyday. Keeps me focused. Are you weighing in at the same time everyday? Your weight flunctuates during the day. You might also need to drink more water.
jecrites
Welcome back!
The Quilter 07-29-2003, 08:10 AM Good Morning Everyone! I hope we all have a great day today. Yesterday I started out strong. Got to work and found out we were going out for lunch to celebrate a birthday. From there on it was downhill all the way. But did finish up the day with a healthy supper. My weakness is portion control. I need to really get back on track with that, because I am way too liberal with my servings.
GATOR---Thanks for the compliment, but I did not do my dress. We have good friends (who I lovingly call "the hippies") who do that and make candles and all sorts of good stuff. I helped pick out the colors and we discussed the dying patterns. But they did all the work. I loved what you said about lifestyle changes when it comes to being healthy. Boy, did I ever need to hear that. CHERYL is right . . . your pictures do look like professionals. Perhaps National Geographic will come calling.
COUNTRY---You are the sweetest thing. You always make me smile. Of course, you can use my picture of Laurel Fork Falls. The only problem with it is one of my friends curly head is in the bottom right corner. If you look closely you can see her blue bandanna.
BEACH---Thanks for your words about how we really need to shift our way of thinking. I am also a yoyo dieter and it drives me crazy. I did have to smile when you mentioned Oprah and Maria. You are too funny.
MELF---Let's lock arms and plant our feet firmly inside that wagon. I promise not to drag you off. I liked what you said about "doing our best." That's truly all we can ask of ourselves. And sometimes our best looks different than other days. I'm not making an excuse for bad behavior, just being realistic that we are busy and somedays we cannot give enough brain time to our project of healthy bodies like we should. Does that make sense? I'm not sure I'm making it clear. Oh well . . . I know you will do great. Just get one of your skinny pictures and carry it around with you for inspiration.
Gotta go finish getting ready for work. I hope you all have really good days. When we all put our heads on our pillows tonight, I hope we can reflect back on the day and feel good about what we did.
Kim
beachfan37 07-29-2003, 09:09 AM :cb: Hi All
After the great discussion yesterday and with the newbies on board, I went to Rissa's website and re-read all of her stuff on SB. I thought I would post her SB Tips and Tricks here to get us all off to a great Tuesday Tip Day: My FAVORITE comment from this section
"It is not always about the right choice, it is often about the best choice. Sometimes we are in food situations beyond our control and have to eat something. Just try to make the best decisions."
The long and winding road...
Realize that the "detox" period will be rough. Think of sugar as a drug, like caffeine or nicotine, and remember that detoxification is NEVER as pleasant as intoxication. You may have headaches, crankiness and fatigue during your withdrawal from sugar. If you can get through this, the rest is easy. Be careful not to cheat too often, or you will have to face detox and the cravings all over again. Also beware, some commercially available treats labeled "sugar free" may cause you to fall off the wagon too. Federal label laws allow manufacturers to exclude complex sugars from the sugar grams, because they are really starches (like Maltodextrin) or sugar alcohol. If you are having problems sticking to SB, examine your food diary and see if you are eating a lot of these items.
Take a week or two to get used to the diet, then start controlling the portions. In other words, if it takes you a box of triscuits to keep from eating a piece of pie, then so be it...it will get you through the first two weeks which are the toughest! Calories count, just not as much while you are trying to adjust to life without refined flour, sugar and instant/fast food!
Watch your fat intake. Just don't count fat grams! Be careful of *fat-free* products, watch what they put in when they take the fat out! Do not use SB as a license to include high fat items in every meal. Just be sensible.
Read labels and pay close attention to ingredients, not just sugar grams. Learn to look for the hidden sugars. There are comprehensive lists in the first SB book. One person wrote to me wanting to know why she could not eat instant mashed potatoes, because the label said less than 1 gram of sugar per serving. Well, yeah, but they are POTATOES! Dairy and fruit products will have lots of sugar grams, just make sure they have no added sugar in the ingredient list and enjoy...galactose and fructose are SB friendly!
The better you control your environment, the easier Sugar Busters is to do. Do not buy illegal items for the house. Okay, so those of you with junk food junkies in the house, if you are in control of shopping, just quit buying the potato chips and double stuff Oreo cookies. There is not a man, woman or child who requires those things in order to survive. The best way to avoid temptation is to AVOID temptation!
After over four years of following posts on the support boards on AOL, I can say that the people who lost the most weight were very disciplined in the beginning. Most of these folks lost ten percent of their body weight in the first three to six months. I have lost forty percent of my original body weight with Sugar Busters. That is considered medically significant and very unusual.
In general, the bigger you are the faster you lose, but do NOT expect quick results. This is a lifetime of improved eating, not a short term fix. I recommend taking your measurements and limit weighing to once a week or even once a month. Losing weight should be secondary to improving your health and breaking bad habits. It took you a long time to gain it, expect to spend a long time trying to get rid of it.
Exercise regularly, if you can. I was very lax about serious exercise the first four months and I still lost weight. During the winter I swam for approximately an hour three or more times a week. I started off slow, then built up to very vigorous lap swimming. It made a huge difference in my muscle composition. Even though I have lost a significant amount of weight relatively quickly, I am still in proportion and do not have hanging or sagging skin. In the spring and summer, I am doing heavy gardening for at least on hour a day, sometimes up to six hours a day on the weekends, so I do not swim as often. Trust me, all those roses make for a LOT of exercise. ;-) Just try to do something every day. Walk, bike, take the stairs, do something. Build muscle, burn calories and get your metabolism moving!
100% whole grain bread is allowed, but if you are trying to lose, limit it as much as possible. It is the single highest GI item you will consume in a day. If you eat pita or other flat bread, make sure it is whole grain. I strongly suggest very thinly sliced 100% whole grain bread and never more than two slices a day. Remember, a bagel, even a legal one, is equal to a LOT more than two pieces of bread so, unless you are on maintenance, consider them a rare treat.
Don't skip meals! When I was at my biggest, I never ate breakfast and sometimes skipped lunch. When you program your body to think it is in starvation mode, it will fight to keep your fat reserves in case of impending famine.
Uncle Sam cereal. With ten grams of fiber and flaxseed, it is guaranteed to keep you regular, it even says so on the box. I ate it for breakfast most every day when I lost all of my weight. I mix mine with a half cup of raw oats, low fat milk and Splenda.
Drink plenty of water!!! Everyone thinks they drink enough water, but chances are, you don't. Soda and tea do not count. Water is essential to good health and weight loss.
Be careful when choosing breads. Things marked whole wheat sometimes are not and you must always check the ingredients, even if you have been buying the same brand for months. Over half the whole wheat items I have found have enriched wheat flour as one of the main ingredients. Enriched wheat flour is just white flour. All of the Rye and Pumpernickel breads sold in my area are made with wheat flour, therefore are not acceptable. You will probably NEVER find 100% stone ground whole wheat bread, so the next best thing to look for is the "100 % WHOLE WHEAT" label. At least that way, you know that you are really getting wheat bread. Pepperidge Farm makes several great whole grain breads. Colonial and Nature's Way do too. Look for bread made with stone ground whole wheat and less than 3 to 5 grams of sugar per serving, not per slice! Remember, It should be thick and chewy or it probably is not acceptable.
After you get through detox, remember, calories count, but you don't have to count calories. Once you change your eating habits, it is much easier to recognize binge eating and comfort eating. My motto is "no more empty calories!"
Just because it is legal does not mean it is unlimited. Triscuits, whole wheat bread, no sugar added ice cream, and brown rice are all potential abuse foods. Once you have gotten through "detox" your appetite should decrease and portion sizes will shrink. It happened for me, it will probably happen for you. I used to tell the cafeteria lady, "I am a big girl and I want BIG GIRL sized portions." Not anymore.
Brown rice is acceptable, but even Brown Basmati Rice has a moderately high GI score, so use it sparingly. Sweet potatoes and carrots are moderately high GI foods and should be eaten in moderation, not with every meal.
Butter and mayonnaise are legal and can be used within reason. Some of the newer "heart healthy" margarines are fine, because they do not have transfatty acids. Duke's mayonnaise is a southern brand that has no sugar in it. However, the sugar content of most major commercially prepared regular mayonnaise items is low enough to be acceptable in small quantities. Remember, SB is a low sugar way of eating, not a no-sugar one.
A portion is generally construed to be the approximate size of your clenched fist. Another way to determine portions is to make it no bigger than what could fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. I don't recommend you actually use your hand to measure. It is just a simple means of approximation. Always look at nutritional information for the suggested serving size.
Don't be scared of fruit and milk. I consume more dairy than I ever have in my life and it has not limited my weight loss at all. I started out using fat free/skim and now use 1-2% milk. I also ate grapefruit and/or Fuji apples every day while I was losing a lot of weight. I often eat two pieces of fruit a day, but I always eat whole fruit and never mix it with my meal. Since discovering I am at potential risk for osteoporosis, I add non-fat powdered milk to a lot of things to keep my calcium intake high.
Keep your calcium intake up, even it means taking supplements, especially if you are on thyroid medication. The first thing women seem to cut out when they diet is calcium. Recent medical studies have found a correlation between body fat composition, weight loss and calcium intake. The University of Tennessee study showed that obese mice who were given reducing diets that were high in calcium lost more weight and body fat, than with a reduced calorie diet alone. The group that lost the most was the one where they substituted nonfat dry milk for other protein sources in the diet. If you take medication for a thyroid condition, you must talk to your doctor, before making any changes to your calcium supplementation routine.
Use no sugar added plain yogurt and add your own flavorings. The diet stuff in the store is loaded with maltodextrin, modified corn starch and fructose. Plain yogurt has a VERY low score on the glycemic index and it is good for you! Add some DaVinci's sugar free flavored syrups and you have a whole variety of flavored yogurts.
Make your own smoothies. Try this combination, blend raw oats, nonfat plain yogurt, 1 teaspoon spreadable fruit, several liberal dashes of DaVinci's Sugar-free Syrup and milk to thin it out. It is a wonderful, healthful treat!
No sugar added ice cream is allowed in moderation. Be sensible, you will more than likely slow your weight loss if you eat a bowl of ice cream every night! Even Sugar Busters brand ice cream is NOT going to make eating a bowl of ice cream every night conducive to weight loss. The real problem with ice cream is that it has very little calcium or other nutrients in relation to the caloric count.
Soy beverage (soy milk) is a great idea, especially if you have problems with PMS, perimenopause or menopause! But be careful, most of them are FULL of sugar. Since soy milk is not really milk, those sugar grams are NOT legal, they are NOT from galactose, since soy drink is by definition lactose free. The only brand I have found with NO sugar added was Westbrae Natural Westsoy 100% Organic Nondairy Soy Beverage, Unsweetened. It only has TWO ingredients, filtered water and whole organic soy beans. :-) If you have or suspect thyroid problems, you may want to avoid soy products.
Oats, oats and more oats. :-) Do not use instant or quick cooking oatmeal. Regular Old fashioned Rolled Oats cook in the microwave in about three minutes, how much more instant than that do you REALLY need? The less you cook it the better, because the GI goes up the more it is heated. Oats are a wonderful mix of soluble and insoluble fiber and are very filling. Add raw oats to your cereal or to your smoothies for texture and bulk. This will definitely help lower your cholesterol.
Stay away from alcohol, it is after all sugar. A glass of red wine a night is considered acceptable, but I find it dehydrates me. Of course when you are dating, that seems to be the first thing you put back into the mix! Just be sensible if at all possible.
Russell Stover's makes a great line of sugar-free candies. If you need a treat, give yourself a treat! Just not every night, in fact not more than once in a while for me. Be warned, some people get diarrhea from sugar alcohol and it creates sugar cravings for others.
Try eating cereal or protein shakes/smoothies for any rushed meal. If you have or suspect thyroid problems, you may want to avoid soy protein products.
Consider making legal meals on the weekends and placing the food into containers for freezing, even before you begin to eat. It will help you have easy to prepare meals all week and keep you from eating seconds or thirds. I did not discover Tupperware until a few years ago, so I bought a lot! I have several dozen Rock-n-Serve containers that work very well for freezer to microwave to table use. I use the small ones for side dishes and the medium shallow for a main dish. I find that it also helps me control portion size. I don't sell Tupperware or have stock in the company, but after a few years of heavy use, I think it is the BEST solution for food storage. Plus, if you store your entree separate from your side dishes, it allows for more variety when selecting your meals.
If you are a restaurant that serves huge portions, ask for a to-go box when the meal is served. Place half of your meal into the box before you begin to eat.
If you can, take your meals and snacks with you. It will keep you on track and force you to start planning meals. It also leaves you less open to suggestions like, "let's all do a Chinese buffet." If you are like me, it is hard to stay legal at a Chinese restaurant unless you special order off the menu! By the way, most Chinese restaurants will go out of their way to accommodate any special requests you make. You would be amazed how much sugar in used in Asian cooking, I sure was.
It is not always about the right choice, it is often about the best choice. Sometimes we are in food situations beyond our control and have to eat something. Just try to make the best decisions.
Cheating is not the end of the world, heck it is not even the end of the diet. If you fall off the wagon, just get back on there with the next meal, do not give yourself license to cheat until next Monday, next week, next month or next year! If you cheat, the cravings might come back and you may feel compelled to cheat again. Just remember, detox was no fun the first time and you do not want to have to go through it again. <g>

CountryMom4Him 07-29-2003, 09:51 AM I am moving slowly this morning but at least I'm moving. :)
BeachFan...thank you so much for the article. It really puts things back in perspective and is very motivating.
WELCOME Daisey! I know you are suppose to eat breakfast but I am just NOT a breakfast person. Sometimes I eat a spoon of peanut butter or a piece of toast but not usually. As for Dinner I don't know the rules but I don't eat after 7 if I can help it. I've heard it takes 3 hours to digest food and I don't want to go to bed with it on my tummy. It really helps with indigestion not to eat late.
Cherylco...I weight everyday also. I find it helps me and drives me crazy....LOL It's a lot easier to catch the weight when it starts to creep up.
Kim....portion control is not by best thing either. That's one reason I like salads and veggies. I feel less pressure to small portions. Of course since starting this woe I can't eat as much as I use to. Sometimes that can be a pain when something taste great and there is just no more room. :) I had a second helping of taco salad the other night and thought I was gonna burst.
Heartmom...thanks for all the resturant ideas. We rarely eat out so at least I have some good ideas now.
Melf...praying your work week goes smoothly and quickly for you.
Well, I'm fixing to enjoy my one cup of morning coffee. I hope you all have a super day!!!!!!
Love,
Crystle
bashful8 07-29-2003, 11:25 AM Thank you everyone for your wonderful advice. I can see that this is not going to be an easy road to travel and it is going to have a lot of ups and downs. I just have to try and keep a good attitude, keep making good choices (or as good as I can) and keep moving. I would say in the last week or two that is my biggest accomplishment is that, I have either walked on the treadmill or done yoga everday (minus two days).
I will definately keep coming back here. I think it will keep me honest. It will bring me up when I am feeling down and remind me I am not alone when I have a bad meal (or day or week).
Thank you!
Bashful
PS Those that are doing WW as well. Is it working? B/c I've done WW in the past and always been starving and just gone up and down everyweek.
Rosalie 07-29-2003, 12:11 PM Good Morning Everyone
I heard from Debbie again this morning. She said to tell everyone that she said hello and that she misses you all. She says that next week is going to be hard for her to get on the board much, as her cousins wedding is on the 9th and she has a lot of family visiting for the wedding so will be really having a busy time. She did say that she was 100% op yesterday and plans to continue that way. We aren't likely to be hearing from her again until she is back in Miami as her Mom doesn't have a computer. She's leaving this morning to head down to NC.
Beachfan - That's great stuff you posted for TT. Although I've read it before it is always good to refresh your memory and it's good motivation.
Kim - You look great in the picture. Very cute dress.
Monet - Sorry to hear things haven't been going too well for you. Hope you feel better once you start the later shift. That one hour will certainly make a lot of difference. When I was working I usually started at 7.30. Once I had a job where I had to start at 7 and I really had trouble handling that. I couldn't imagine starting at 6.00 a.m.
Gator - Beautiful picture of the caterpillars. As much as I don't like to see the live ones I can see how beautiful they are. Nature is wonderful.
Well I really have to run. Have some errands to do this morning and want to get out before I decide I have to stay and have lunch first. Hello  to everyone I have missed, a lot of you I know, and a big welcome to all the newbies. :grouphug:
Bye for now.
Marie.
beachfan37 07-29-2003, 12:26 PM Bashful...I combine WW with SB and it is working. I'm not hungry because I am eating low GI foods and picking foods that are very high in fiber. I do WW on-line so I can use their journal feature and points plan. It really has worked combining the 2. I think if I didn't do SB I would be hungry...because basically they say you can eat whatever you want as long as you don't go over your point value. The problem with that is if you chose the wrong foods you could eat all of your points in one meal  So I am more an SBer than a WWer. But because to lose weight I have to have portion control and because I am big into the journalling and wanting to keep the weight off, I use the WW plan. One other easy way to journal is www.fitday.com it shows the breakdown of carbs, fat, proteins and gives you the calorie breakdown too. Plus fit day is free! So I say do what works for you. ;) p.s. I really have never been hungry when I do SB.
Rosalie...it is so good to hear Debbie is doing better. We miss her! Have a good day and thanks for all you do.
Pancho 07-29-2003, 12:29 PM Alright, I'm upset. I posted a loooong post and then my electricity went out, briefly. Sooooo, here goes again.
I need to vent this morning:
I went to Fuddruckers last night with about 9 other moms from the MOMS Club that I am in. I ordered the smallest burger they had (1/3 lb) with cheese and avocado, and then topped it off at the bar with lots of lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenos, etc... Well, as I approached the table, one of the newer moms comments, "oh you are the one who ordered that with no bun, I wondered who could order a hamburger without a bun." Well that got the comments going, "are you on Atkins?," etc.. I told them that I just limit my starchy carbs to 2-3 a day and I had already met my limit. Well, one mom says, "I couldn't give up my bread and pasta." I said, "neither do I." Another mom said that she would meet her weekly carb limit by the first day of the week. Well this went on for awhile, and I have to admit that most of these moms are well aware that I have dropped 25 pounds in 4 1/2 months. How do they think I did it? Just wish it off???? It was funny listening to these women almost criticizing me as they stuffed their faces with their 3/4 pound burgers on buns with french fries, with dessert! I don't understand people's obsessions with food, IT IS JUST FOOD!!! I worked my a-- off for this, and I'm not going to go back to my old eating habits for anything. I was so proud of myself when I left there last night. I told my husband when I got home that I never could have done this when I was younger because I cared too much what other people thought. Not anymore! I do have to be petty and add that most of these women could afford to drop about 20 pounds themselves.
Anyway...my 12-month old had her check-up yesterday and is doing great; she is 95% for her weight and height. She's a big baby!
Well, gotta go do a bunch of stuff today again. I will try to check in later.
Gator: I am not offended by the pictures; I find them interesting and beautiful.
bashful8: Welcome!
daisey - Welcome. I think you should eat your last "whatever" at least 2 hours prior to going to bed at night. As far as the Cool Whip in the tub, I think if you get the Redi-Whip, it's better. You aren't tempted to eat the whole tub either. I keep a can of REdi-Whip around for my coffee drinks when I make them.
Jecrites - Welcome back!
Teensy: Congrats to Brant; second place isn't so bad.
Monet: Glad you schedule will be changing for you; it sounds like it is just what you need.
Quilter: I was going to ask if you made your dress too; it is really neat. The falls look divine; makes me want to get away!!
Well everyone...thanks for letting me vent. My last post was even longer than this one, if you can imagine.
See you later.
groovia 07-29-2003, 01:21 PM Good afternoon everyone-
I think I was off program yesterday- at least I feel like I did. I know my portions are too big
Uncle Sam Cereal w/ splenda & skim (i didn't measure, but I think it was 1 1/2 cups of cereal.
4 pieces of stoneground wheat (pepperidge farm german dark wheat- it's fabulous)
2 servings of Carl Budding lean turkey
2 large slices of cheddar cheese
(these were sandwiches so i also had mayo and mustard)
4 ry-krisps w/ peanut butter
4 servings of sugar free pudding (vanilla- jello brand)
pan fried chicken with mushrooms and onions
So- does it look really awful?
Beachfan - thanks for posting the info from Rissa's website. It makes me think that the sugarfree pudding is not so harmless, because I do recall that maltodextrin is #1 on the ingredient list.
Also- Rissa recommends to have no more than 2 pieces of bread a day and I went up to 4.
Pancho- I'm proud of you too!! My friends know that I am constantly reading "diet" books - and they tend to pick arguments about how horrible it is to NOT be able to eat potatoes, and they wouldn't trust ANY diet that does not allow them to eat bananas. It's pretty frustrating, i know. But you held your ground!
Kelly
HIPI69 07-29-2003, 01:24 PM I have been trying to research SB and need to know if like Atkins are the sugar alcohols subtracted???
heartmom 07-29-2003, 03:10 PM Pancho- they were acting critical because that way they could "justify" their bad eating. That's okay, you know what you're doing is healthy. I lost a friend of more than 3 years because she got so jealous of me she couldn't stand it. She quit calling, coming over etc when I got smaller than her(I used to be bigger). It's a shame that I did something good for myself and she couldn't be happy for me.
Anyway, I stepped on the scales today(sigh) and was shocked that it was down. Still can't get over that one, but I did pee a good bit yesterday, so it must have been fluid. According to the scales, I'm only up 2 instead of 5. Today, I've been trying to stay busy cleaning, etc and occupy myself instead of thinking about food. This morning I had 2 medium scrambled eggs topped with salsa. Then I had an orange and NSA yogurt for my midmorning snack. I plan on making a cheeseburger and salad for lunch- not sure yet what I'll make for supper.
heartmom 07-29-2003, 03:14 PM Groovia- it's too many starches BUT you're just starting out, so if it keeps you on plan then I say okay. Definetly better than getting hungry and eating the wrong foods and having to start again. However, keep in mind that after a few days you should keep your starches to no more than 3 a day. If you increase your protein, you will find that it helps with the hunger/cravings.
jane8760 07-29-2003, 03:44 PM Hello everyone!......heartmom, pancho, rosalie, monet, country mom, cherylco, melf and missing in action Deb.....and to all the new members and anyone I missed.
I haven't been on here in so long. Today I came on and started reading your posts for this week and before I knew it I had a big smile on my face. I have missed you all.
When we last talked I was going to do WW and try to incorporate the SB WOE as well. Well.....THAT DIDN'T WORK. My weight is the same. :s: I guess I can't do this on my own.
But, as we all say.....I am starting over. I have to at least keep trying.
I wish I could find the magic but I can't. I just have to keep at it.
I will try and check in again soon. Hope you are all happy and healthy.
Jane
GatorGal 07-29-2003, 05:34 PM Groove--I agree about the starches. WW bread is fine, but you want to limit it to no more than 2 servings of starches a day. Like you, I also use Pepperidge Farm bread (100% stoneground WW) but I slice it crosswise before I use it, so I can have one sandwich using 2 slices of very thin bread--really just one slice. That way I feel satisfied and allow room for another starch later on. Perhaps you could have substituted some really great veggies for that second sandwich. A big salad, sautéed spinach, or some such thing. Also, fresh fruit might make a good substitute for the pudding. Try to get as close to real natural food as you can. A baked apple, fresh orange, or poached pear might make a great snack or dessert.
Some of the caterpillars are "walking around" instead of eating milkweed, which might mean that they are close to pupating (going into chrysalis mode). Normally, caterpillars eat like crazy. They are basically eating machines to prepare for their little hibernation in the chrysalis. Then they quit eating and start wandering around looking for a good place to pupate. Then they take a big "dump" (sorry!) and kind of go into pre-chrysalis. they sit immobile for a day or so in sort of a "J" shape. Then all of a sudden they give a big shrug and off comes their skin and, voila, there is the chrysalis. It's pretty neat. I'll try to get a pix of the "j" thing and also the chrysalis, if I can get an in-focus picture.
Breakfast: SB pancakes topped with peach, raspberries and strawberries.
Snack: 1 clementine
Lunch: 1 scant cup spaghetti (white semolina) with 1/2 cup homemade spag. sauce. 1 salad.
Snack: 1/2 peach, 1/4 roasted chicken leg and thigh quarter.
I haven't figured the calories yet.
We are having people over tonight to visit with some friends who have moved to Taiwan. They are back in town on a short business trip. We are providing dinner: London broil, salad, rice and bread. Someone is bringing dessert. I plan on eating the london broil and the salad. I think I can handle it OK without failing to stay OP.
Re the Sunday thing, this past Sunday I ate some fried chicken (my fav. food in all the world!!), some cranberry-pineapple-nut jello salad (I love that stuff, esp. with fried chicken), salad (I brought that and it was good), some devilled eggs, some fresh fruit (canteloupe balls), and some ice cream. The amount and also some of the items were definitely no-nos:nono: but I just went into "frenzy" mode and did not control myself. It seems like thats the normal Sunday nights for me. There was a coconut cream pie and a strawberry rhubarb pie, both of which I passed on except for a 1" square piece of rhubarb, which I didn't even finish. There even was mashed potatoes with all the good stuff in them, which I didn't touch. But the fried chicken, the jello and the eggs were not good, calorie wise as well as volume. So, I'm still mulling over what to do to get me safely through those situations. I normally take something that I can eat (salad or roasted chicken, etc) but my fav. food is usually there--calling my name!!! :)
I walked 1 1/2 miles today with my DH before I went to my volunteer thing. My legs were tired and achey, so I'm glad I just did 1.5 miles.
Monet--Thanks for the post from Rissa's web site. It's a good one, isn't it!
Everyone else--Have a great day.
THE BIG ORANGE BABE 07-29-2003, 07:00 PM GOOD EVENING ALL MY BUDDYS!!!!!
Is it just me, or do the days at work seem TOOOOOOO LONG????
I'm just hating the afternoons....I'm getting my work done really quick for some reason and am having to HUNT for THINGS TO DO!
KIM...I don't know that area, but I sure do miss sights like those falls! If you're ever in the HIGHLANDS NC area, be sure to go to DRY FALLS....My Grandfather owned that land many years ago and had a tourist stand at the falls, selling tickets, trinkets, cider
etc....I spent many a day there with him during summer visits and
loved every minute of it. I have a picture of the falls on my fridge
to this day...It now belongs to the State of NC and now maybe even part of the National Park.. Haven't been there in years, but I know you would love it...
The dress is GREAT....you did a good job. So glad you enjoyed your get together...and I know that MADDIE GIRL is glad for Mommy to be home!
GATOR....the movie is about two activists against the death penalty. He is accused and convited of killing and raping his assistant. They sentence him to death and he requests a particular journalist to come to death row for an interview. That's all you're getting out of me...it's a fabulous movie and you would really enjoy it.
MORE NEW CHICKIES FOR OUR CORNER OF THE BOARD!!!!! WELCOME!!!!! We're a pretty close bunch here and quite the talkative bunch....You'll like it here...Most of us have been here a long time, so that should tell you something!
JANE....Welcome home....now stick around....
FOR ALL OF YOU WITH DOOKIE HOUSER
problems...I agree with BEACH....UNCLE SAMS cereal is the best!
I love it...and I don't have a problem  Some people have trouble adjusting to it, but it's all natural and really works...just like the box says.....NATURAL LAXATIVE!!!!

Rosalie 07-29-2003, 07:30 PM Here's what I had for dinner this evening: home made French onion soup with a couple of tbs sourdough croutons and topped with Italian cheeses followed by Crustless Broccoli Quiche (didn't have any spinach so doubled the broccoli) and a side salad. Have enough left over for dinner tomorrow.
Yesterday I forgot to post. I had Chicken breast cooked in cream of mushroom and onion soup with red peppers and onions and green beans.
I got home from my shopping trip about 2.45 and have been in the kitchen most of the time since then. Had lunch at 3.00 p.m. then had to prepare dinner and do dishes. Have to leave again in a few minutes for badminton.
Have a good evening everyone.
Marie.
beachfan37 07-29-2003, 09:34 PM :moo: Dinner :)
Went to a Greek restraunt tonight. I had Greek Snapper (baked snapper with Greek spices, tomatoes, onions and feta cheese on top), green beans and Greek salad...it was yum yum but I feel stuffed even though it was legal.
FYI...to those with tummy trouble. I take Nexium for reflux and for the IBS, I eat lots of fiber and take 2 Citrucel pills each morning. My kids have IBS too...it runs in families...and I make sure they eat high fiber cereal every morning. That seems to help. Also, if they eat fried foods or very rich foods we have problems but that is actually good because they are thin! They don't get to have the same high fat foods other teens tend to eat :D
Didn't walk today...too tired but will go tomorrow. Picked up my daughter from dance camp and am very glad she is home. I'm not sure how I will be when she goes off to college in 2 years.:?:
Talk to you later.

CountryMom4Him 07-29-2003, 10:19 PM Woo hoo! Just got in from walking. Day 9! It was HOT but great. We walked really fast except for the last half mile. I try to cool off a little before I just stop. Supper tonight was delicious.
I had guacomole and pico de gallo. To much guac but YUM YUM. I had a little snack before walking. I mixed some PB with a packed of splenda and some oatmeal. That's one of my favorite treats when I want something a little sweet.
((((Jane)))) Welcome back!!!
Bob......yucky on the frogs. We have those little tree frogs all over the place. Thier little legs look like rubber toys when they jump. My kids just love em. As long as they don't get to close I like em too. :)
Anna your supper sound good. I love different cheese. I don't think I've had feta and if so only maybe once.
Well I am one pooped pup....In a good way. Catch ya'll later.
Love,
Crystle
Just checking in real quick before I head for bed. Scale was still up this morning from the week end, but expect it to start going back down. Stayed OP today. Not drinking enough water, but will work on that tomorrow.
Beach, Thanks for posting the TT from Rissa's site. I know I've read them before too, but needed them again right now! Printed them out & will bring to work with me tomorrow & digest them again. ;)
groovia 07-30-2003, 01:02 AM We had a party today at school (last day for adult students - I teach ESL) so to prepare myself, I contributed cocktail peanuts, grapes, and a vegetable tray and tried to stick to my legal party food.
There were cupcakes to celebrate a birthday, but I did not have ANY :D --although, I did manage to "accidentally" get some frosting on my fingers, so of course i had to lick it off. :o
Another questionable thing I did: I ate a guatemalan taco. It was very small, and the only sugar was the flour tortilla. I knew I shouldn't, but I didn't want to hurt little Francisca's feelings, because she made a plate and served me very proudly... so...
I'm also planning a cheating evening because my birthday is coming up (celebrating on Saturday) and by golly, I am going to eat pizza & cake. Do y'all think this is a horrible idea?

GatorGal 07-30-2003, 10:27 AM Hi everyone,
I hope you have a great day and that WIW is good. I did not lose any weight.
I did, however, get my walking in. Just did 1.5 miles today. My left leg feels "shin splinty" so I may need to check on getting new shoes. I did not think these were that old, but something is causing me some slight pain. I wear orthotics, so either I've been overdoing it (I hope not) or the shoes need replacing.
We had a nice time with our friends here last night. I served london broil flank steak, a green salad with orange segments and avocado, and crusty bread. Someone brought rice, and someone else brought dessert--some sort of gooey bars topped with nuts and melted chocolate chips. I had 3 oz. meat and lots of salad. And 1 of the bars. I must say that they were pretty good.
Thunder, welcome back.
I have some more pictures of my butterfly babies. I brought5 large eastern black swallowtail caterpillars in from the garden last night. They were so big that they probably will pupate any day now. Here's a picture of some more of those caterpillars. The next picture is a chrysalis of that butterfly. This particular caterpillar makes a chrysalis that looks like this. I don't know if I can post both pictures on the same message. If not, I'll post it in consecutive messages. You can see in the chrysalis picture that the caterpillar attaches itself by its tail end and then spins 2 thin threads that it attaches from its "shoulders" to the branch or whatever it is hanging from. You'll have to look closely to see the 2 thin threads.
GatorGal 07-30-2003, 10:29 AM OK, I could only include one picture per post. So here's the picture of the chrysalis that those little guys "morph" into as they develop into butterflies. The butterflies look the the picture that I posted on page 1 of this week.
GatorGal 07-30-2003, 10:35 AM The next picture of of the Monarch caterpillar that is preparing to pupate (form a chrysalis). This is the fellow whose picture I posted a day or so ago, probably on page 2 of this week's forum. Monarch larvae eat milkweed, whereas the eastern black swallowtail larvae eat parsley or fennel. This monarch caterpillar forms this "J" shape, and about a day later it shrugs off its skin and it then "chrysalizes". A week or ttwo after that a butterfly emerges from the chrysalis.
GatorGal 07-30-2003, 10:38 AM This last picture is a monarch chrysalis. It is so beautiful with its jade green color. It looks slightly waxy and there is a thin band of gold about 1/4 way down from the top. In this picture it looks like a thin black line. When the caterpillar in the above picture makes his chrysalis, perhaps I can get a good enough picture so that you can see the gold. It is almost a miracle to watch the change from caterpillar to chrysalis. How can what one minutes is the above caterpillar change in the next minute to this chrysalis? It's God at work is the only explanation I have.
BOBatwork 07-30-2003, 10:46 AM MARRIAGE SEMINAR
While attending a marriage seminar on communication, Tom and his wife Linda listened to the instructor declare:
"It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other."
He addressed the men:
"For instance, gentlemen, can you name your wife's favorite flower?"
Tom leaned over, touched his wife's arm gently and whispered,
"Pillsbury All-Purpose, isn't it?"
The rest of the story is not pleasant.
beachfan37 07-30-2003, 11:35 AM :cp: Happy WIW to all who lost. I stayed the same today but I always consider that a success too!
Gator: Loved the pics of the butterflies. Can't wait to see them when they transform!
BOB: GREAT funny. Since I don't cook my hubby would not make that mistake:lol:
Heart: I knew you would be back down in no time. Usually when we have a increase like you did, it is mostly water. Keep up the good work.
Rosalie: Badmiton sounds like so much fun. When the kids were little I bought a net and the set but could never get them interested. I may try again and even see if my hubby would try.
Thunder:  Welcome back. Like you I lost a lot of wt. 90lbs and gained a lot back (over half). This board means a lot to me and has helped me get back on track.
Melf: I go back to Rissa's website a lot. Not only are the tips good but all of her information. I think her common sense approach is what makes me like it so much. It motivates me to keep on track. Staying OP is great. The scale will start dropping before you know it. :dancer:
Groove: :hb: Happy Birthday early. You did great avoiding the cupcakes at the party.
See ya'll later...Have a great day
:strong: Be strong in avoiding temptation

jecrites 07-30-2003, 12:16 PM Hey everyone.
Just thought I'd pop in again and say hello to everybody.
I took Kerri, my 6 yr. old, to the eye doc yesterday for some new glasses. The ones she had got broken, I have no clue as to how it happened, but she needed new ones before school starts back. The eye doc said that her prescription on the broken glasses was just fine and she didn't need a new prescription; she just needs new glasses. Well, that was all fine and good, but holy cow, the new glasses are just over $160 and they will have a 3 year warrenty on them so they can be replaced if something happens to them. I was in shock when they told me how much they were gonna be. Her other ones were like $72. I know to some people $160 isn't that bad, but it just shocked me. They want me to get Katie, the 9 yr. old, in for an appointment just to check her out since her sister is a little farsighted. I hope when I get her in that she won't need any. I've never thought about taking her to the eye doc, she doesn't seem to have any problems with her eyes that I can tell anyway.
Ok, now to let you all know about my trip to Arkansas to get the kids. My MIL and FIL worked the whole time, so we didn't get to see too much of them. Working normally is one thing, but MIL was on call when we got there and was on call 2 days during the week. We spent most of our time with hubby's sister and her hubby. I did go down to my friends house in Louisiana where we moved here from. It was really nice to see her again. We talk quite a bit, but being there is just so much different. I wasn't all that happy about the people that moved in my house though. They aren't taking care of the 2 rose bushes I planeted before moving, and the flower bed looks horrible, granted I didn't keep that thing up all the time, but I did have it looking better than they do. We spent a couple days at my mom's. Nothing really happened there, mom was sick and dad was working. I know hubby was really bored, but at least he went this time. Nothing really exciting happened on our trip "home" but I just thought I'd tell you all about it. It was nice to get away from here for a week, but it could have been a lot better if everyone didn't have to work all the time we were there.
My eating is getting some better, but not 100% yet. I'm working on it though.
I need to go for now, but I'll pop back in at sometime. Talk to y'all later.
Jenn
Pancho 07-30-2003, 12:28 PM Well here it is, Weigh-in-Wednesday again! I am at 126.5 this morning (I have been fluctuating between 125-127). I guess that is not so bad since it is that TOM. I did work out this morning, so I am feeling good overall.
Last night for dinner, I fried up some ground beef with garlic and onions and had a legal pasta sauce (Mom's brand) with fresh garlic and basil (I looove garlic). I then made some whole grain pasta and mixed it all up. I made a big salad to go with it and some cottage cheese. It was good and filled me up. The night before I had a burger with all the fixins' minus the bun. Not sure what's for dinner yet tonight; better decide soon.
heart: Thanks for making me feel better. I guess I really know that about these people but hearing it helps. It's a real shame about your "friend" but who needs friends like that anyway? It really makes you wonder what kept you two together before, if she couldn't support you when you were working your tail-end off for those awesome results!
Jane: Welcome back!
groovia: Way to not eat those cupcakes. That little taco probably didn't do too much damage. I think it is o.k. to stray off plan for special occasions as long as you can get back on track, and as long as it is the exception and not the rule. I had a coupon for Auntie Anne's pretzels (buy one get one free). I took my daughter to the mall the other day knowing that that is what we were going to get when we got there. I planned it and then enjoyed it and got right back on track. You can't let a coupon like that go to waste you know
thunder: Welcome back! I didn't know you before, but look forward to getting to know you now. Did you have a boy or girl? I have a daughter that just turned 1-year old two weeks ago.
jecrites: Glad to see you are back. I hope Katie doesn't need glasses too; it can get very expensive!
Take care everyone and have a fantastic day. I am going to go to Old Navy to check out their summer clearance deals and see if I can find anything worth getting.
groovia 07-30-2003, 12:37 PM WOO HOO, BOB!
That is so funny. I laughed at loud, sitting here all alone
Gator- I am absolutely fascinated by your photos! Do you have a special kit? or did you just find them outside, and decide to watch?
Pancho- You're 126!! Teeny! How much have you lost? How long did it take? How much more to go?
and as for WIW- i'm down 2 (well, more like 1.7, but I'm rounding to whole numbers) Yee Haw
Went to Trader Joe's yesterday, and OMG, what fabulous place! Much cheaper than Fresh Fields/Whole Foods, whatever it is called. I found some cookies that say:
"Carb Safe" & "Low effective carbs & sugar free"
They are chocolate chip and double chocolate chip
Sugars 0g
Protein 5g
Fiber 3g
Fat 9 g (saturated 3.5)
Unbleached enriched flour is like the 4th ingredient. What do y'all think? Safe in moderation?

Rosalie 07-30-2003, 01:03 PM Hi Everyone
I'm happy to report that I am down 2 pounds this week to 192. I hope it stays as I was awake at 6.30 this morning and got up and got on the scale and I was 193. I went back to bed and when I got up a couple of hours later I was 192. It doesn't make sense, but I will accept the lower figure. :)
Heartmom - Glad to hear those extra pounds are coming off again. Whether it is fluid or not doesn't matter, a pound is a pound.........
Pancho - It's amazing how people can be so negative about your efforts to eat healthy and lose weight. Good for you sticking to your guns and not giving in and joining them in their gorging. I am sure some of them are jealous of what you have been able to achieve.
Jane - Welcome back.
Groovia - Good for you resisting the cup cakes at the school party. I'm sure that little taco won't do you any harm - there will certainly be times when we have to consider other peoples feelings, particularly when it is a child's. As for your birthday party, most of us will have planned cheats from time to time. The important thing is to not go overboard with the amount you eat and to get right back on track afterwards. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. :gift: :hb: :balloons:
Thunderwoman - Welcome back. Sorry to hear that you fell right off that wagon. Hope this time you will get back on there and stay put. We are all here to help you along the way. How's the little one doing. I am sure he/she is keeping you very busy.
Gator - Maintaining is certainly better than gaining. Sounds like you did well at your dinner party. How long have you had your present orthotics? If the shoes are in good condition may be the orthotics need changing as our feet seem to change over time. Just a thought. Beautiful pictures.
Beachfan- Congrats on maintaining this week.
Have a good day everyone.
Marie.
thunderwoman62 07-30-2003, 01:21 PM Good morning everyone,
