Debelli 05-12-2003, 07:16 AM GOOD MONDAY MORNING EVERYONE!
Will post my usual morning post sometime later, but wanted to make sure I got our
MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY done early in the morning, so here's my contribution for MM, there's 2 of them to read today:
http://members.aol.com/debelli/monday_morning_thought.jpg
If you are having a rough time right now, give yourself the gift of new beginnings. Give yourself permission to start fresh every day. Stop limiting your happiness to just one or two chances. The world is full of possibilities. Give yourself permission to reach out again and grab your every single day. Don't drown your dreams in hopelessness. Forgive yourself for past mistakes and begin your dream anew. Choose to see new opportunities for success and happiness everywhere you look. Make a conscious choice to greet each morning with gratitude, as a new chance at happiness.

Debelli 05-12-2003, 07:35 AM THIS WEEKS WEEKLY CHALLENGE
We need to get back to our weekly EXERCISE CHALLENGE of getting in at least 3 days of exercise and posting it on the weekly exercise board. So many were doing so well and last week seemed to really be slacking with participants.
The WATER CHALLENGE of drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day continues. I know personally, I've NOT been a participant of this on more days than I'd like, so who will join me with posting their water intake on a daily basis?
Want a NEW CHALLENGE? Here you go! Actually, it's not a new challenge per se. Next Monday Morning when I start the new board, the weekly question will be: HOW MANY DAYS LAST WEEK WERE YOU 100% OP?"
I'd like to challenge the entire board, everyone, to strive to put 7 days, all week, as being the number one answer!:D
Who's up for the challenge???
We can do it girls!!!!!!:cp:
Ellen 05-12-2003, 08:39 AM Morning! I love being #1!
I have to leave in a minute to pick up a girl from church and take her to work. She is having work done on her car.
Be back later....
I am up for all three challenges! Hope everyone joins in!
Solly 05-12-2003, 09:52 AM I can't believe it's ovver!
The wedding was wonderful. Everything went fine. We got to church just in time before a huge storm hit, hail and all. We didn't get to take the pictures outside like she had wanted, but all in all it was great. The storm ended just about the time the wedding was over. I did forget to bring the flower girl's dress. Luckily I got hold of my niece and she went by my house and brought it in plenty of time.
Our hair and makeup turned out wonderful. I was very pleased. I looked like I had a lot of hair. No one could believe it went up like that. The girl was a miracle worker.
You will never believe I did not shed one tear. Me the most emotional person in the entire world. That morning on the way to get my hair done, I was wondering how in the world I was going to get through the day and night. The whole time I'm crying already just thinking about it. Well my mom has been gone for 5 years now and she was the strongest person I know. Stefani takes after her too So I had a little "talk" with her and asked her to get me through this and give me her strength. Well she came through with shining colors. I felt so strong and so proud, even when they did the father/daughter dance. I couldn't believe it. Neither could any of my friends. I guess she only gave my her strength for that one day though as i have cried since then (and am teary eyed as I type this). Oh well, I got what I asked for.
The reception was fun. My only complaint was you can't spend any time with anyone. You are going from person to person and then it's over. The DJ wasn't very good. He messed up on the names of people and then when he introduced the bride and groom he used her last name instead of the groom's. He didn't play the songs we had picked out and didn't invite others to join in the father/daughter dance like we had planned. Stefani was disappointed in the flowers, but they weren't that bad. I can honestly say I have never seen her look so beautiful. The 20 lbs she had lost really complimented her.
I did realize about 11:00 last night that I had forgotten to take the cake napkins to the reception. Don't know what we will do with all those napkins now. Oh well.
I'm really sorry it is over. It was so much fun.
Back to a new week and back to routine. I had 4 days of bad eating (not at the wedding, didn't even get to eat). The scale was up 4 lbs this morning. So back on track today. Time to get serious and get to goal.
Deb I'm up for all challenges this week. I need to get back to my exercise routine. Hope it's not too hard to get going again after 2 weeks off. Hope everyone joins in.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day.
Have a great OP day. No time to read last week's board, so if something happened important, please let me know.
Jackie
Zanne 05-12-2003, 10:31 AM Morning All
Dreary day here. Oh well, I have no time to be out enjoying nice weather anyway.
We're probably putting our investment place on the market this week. Just some minor things left to do (Like I have to clean the whole place:dizzy: ). After we finish that, all we have to do is wait for a good offer.
My eating has been horrible the past week or so, so today is a new start. Lots of water! Actually that's all I can have for the next couple of hours cause I have my physical today. I'm bringing roast beef in a WW tortilla to chow down on as soon as I'm finished:lol:
JACKK--Glad you had a wonderful time at the wedding. We want pictures!! It's too bad the DJ wasn't so hot. WOW! You didn't eat ANYTHING at the wedding??? At my wedding, I ate my dinner PLUS half of one of the bridesmaid's dinner. I wasn't nervous at all. Now you can be over the stress of the wonderful event. I know about stress before a wedding-- I didn't want to tell you before your DD's wedding in case I jinxed you, but 10 days before my wedding my mom had her gall bladder out and 2 weeks before my brother's wedding, my dad had his appendix out! Just a little bit of added stress. Good thing my folks don't have any more kids
WELCOME to all the newbies
 to everyone
I gotta go get a couple of things done before I go to the doctor. Have a good OP day everyone.
jane8760 05-12-2003, 10:34 AM Hello all.
Monday back on track day. It seems like that is all I do.....start and stop. I was thinking about this last night when I couldn't get to sleep....why can't I do this? What is it that is stopping me from succeeding? What is it that I want?
Well I want to be able to eat whatever I want whenever I want. How is that for honesty? But then I said to myself, "That is not possible. You just have to give up something that is all there is to it". Well, today I am being good so far....although I feel the hungry horrors coming on. I made a chef salad for lunch and I have a half slice of SSWW pita bread. Tonight I will have some chicken. Not sure what I will have with it yet. I didn't have time this weekend to do my menu for the week. I will do it today.
I am up for the challenge. I don't have any problem drinking my water each day. I have a 30 ounce tumbler (tupperware) that I keep at my desk and I fill twice each day. That makes 60 there and that doesn't count what I drink at home before I leave work and then at night. The exercise will be a challenge for sure. I am still absolutely exausted. I am going to give the antibiotic a couple more days and if I am not better I will go back to the docs. So exercise is the last thing I want to do. If the weather holds out this week (not promising so far) I will get my 2 mile walk in at least 3 days this week. Shouldn't be to hard.
TOM has arrived with a vengence today. I am dying of cramps. I hardly ever have that problem. I kept laying right up next to my husbands back this morning for the heat....he said "yeah, yeah...I know what you want. You are just using me for my body heat" That man can generate some serious heat. He is like a living heating pad. But, I shall survive. The thing I am worried about is my eating. When I am tired I tend to eat badly and never mind having TOM on the same day!
My install at work this morning got cancelled so at least I can breath today. Last week was horrendous and this week was going to be the same. I may have a chance this morning to go on FitDay and plug in my food for the day. I think I will be doing fine as long as I don't give in to my cravings today.
Deb: so count me in on the challenge. Maybe we can do a point system of some kind to make it more of a compitition (friendly of course) You win nothing but bragging rights but still it will keep us on track.
Jackie: I am so glad the wedding went so well. I know how calm you felt. The day of my wedding I thought I would be a basket case but instead I have never been so calm in all of my life. It was weird. You will have to send us a picture when you have one.
Well, I will chat more later.
Debelli 05-12-2003, 10:48 AM Good Monday Morning Everyone:wave:
Hope you all had a nice weekend!
Got in my 4.5 miles this morning in 52:18, not bad considering I'm pooped, it's hotter than all heck out there:flame: and I didn't sleep well, but hey, at least I started the day and week out right. Off to yoga in about an hour.
Had a nice Mother's Day. The kids, my DM and my DS went to Carraba's yesterday, I footed the bill:fr: We ran around to a few stores afterwards, nothing exciting. I have to say I was proud of myself, not overly so, but proud enough. We got a piece of tiramisu from the HFS to share (I like it better than Carrabas) and I didn't eat one bite! It was offered and boy, did I want it, but I didn't. I did have a SB LEGAL cookie though, 2 portions though, but hey, at least it wasn't the tiramisu! I ate too many carbs yesterday, that I do know, but for the most part, I stayed OP with the exception of about 8 pieces of calamari-that I couldn't resist!
Going to get in some replies before I have to leave.
BOB, you should get those 222's today. Had to give my DF some yesterday as well. Let me know when they arrive-hope they give you some relief! I can't remember, but have you gone to a chiropractor?
SHEANNE, thanks for taking the time to post that recipe, may just have to give it a try and see how I do-though, with me, it could be hopeless:shrug:
AGAPE, GRIN & SUGARLESS, thanks for checking in even though you've all been busy - means a lot:D
TALITHAhttp://members.aol.com/eldemila/sb_sign2.jpg Glad you've decided to join us. CONGRATS to you and your family on the new addition and also, on celebrating your first Mother's Day! This WOE is not only healthy to follow while breastfeeding but you could of easily followed it while you were pregnant unless your Dr. said not to. This is a VERY healthy WOE that includes all the food groups and many Dr.'s even recommend this WOE to their patients. So, unless you are told by a Dr. not to, you should be good to go and continue on. You are doing very well so far, and congratulations. Not only will you have unconditional support from those of us on this board, but it seems like you've got the support of the family, having everyone doing this REALLY helps and makes a world of difference. What I want to say that's VERY important is that you have to make sure you eat enough. It's a big problem with many people who start this WOE as their appetite seems to diminish and they end up not eating enough, which can be just as bad as eating too much, BUT, with you and breastfeeding, this is moreso important to you than someone who's not breastfeeding, so do make sure you are eating enough!!! Let us know a bit more about you when you get a chance - what part of the country are you in? Again, we welcome you and any questions you may have, we're more than happy to help answer them!!!
SEF, did you win anything at Casino Magic? What do you like to play when you go? Sorry to hear you had a sleepless night, hope you can get in a nap today and that you are feeling better.
TEENSY, I bet you look MAHVELOUS with the new doo. CONGRATS on having the scale move downwards. That's awesome to be just 10lbs away from hitting the 100lb mark! You go girl! If that doesn't motivate you, what could? That is wonderful that this WOE has not only shown you that you are able to lose the weight in a healthy way, BUT, that it's helped cured you of other ailments! I can't even fathom doing yard work down here, the heat is just so bad, not to mention the mosquitos! Raspberries, oh gosh, do I love raspberries - the best of all the fruits for fiber! Sounds like you really have a wonderful garden AND a green thumb - wish I could say the same!
MONET, glad to see you checking in this morning:D
JACKK, so glad to hear everything but the DJ was a success at the wedding, can't WAIT to see a picture of YOU!;) Have to say, I'd ask for a partial refund from the DJ seeing he screwed up so many times. Maybe a case for THE PEOPLE'S COURT? Glad to hear all-in-all you had a good time and she's now a happy new bride! You didn't cry? My goodness you really did get a lot of strength, I'd surely have been hysterical. Lord, I just can't even think how I'll be when MICHAEL graduates next year! I'll be a basket case, and my DM who will be there won't help matters! Napkins, everyone uses napkins, use them, no biggie. Geez, you can't remember EVERYTHING!!! I'm sure you'll do great with the new challenges this week, I'm rooting for you, and me:D
ZANNE, hope your physical goes well. Reminds me that I need one, it's been a couple years:rolleyes: Hope you get a quick and good offer on the investment property!
Okay, I'm outta here for now, will check in later today.
Have a great week!
Debbie
Debelli 05-12-2003, 10:49 AM JANE you were posting the same time I was, have to run, but will reply to you in my next post:D
vesnoid 05-12-2003, 11:05 AM Hello,
I know I haven't been visible for a while, dropping in and out, but I am always thinking about you all and naturally, about this WOE.
I have started walking my Dog 2 times per day, I am also learning to roller blade, all in all, trying.
Unfortunatelly I think I have succumbed under the spell of sugar devil again. Gotta try harder.
I have hardly any time at work to post anything, and I don't have a computer at home. I will try to check in more regularly, after all, it is for my own good...
Gotta run. They have added yet another job to my already long list.
CIAO!
Vesna
Beth2374 05-12-2003, 11:14 AM And the scale is SHOWING it!! :) This is going to be a great WIW if things continue the way they are going now!!! The metal monster is showing 188 :) That is down 6 pounds!!
I haven't been eating ENOUGH though. I really need to get more protein in me each day. I've been doing OK in the H2O department, but not great. I have been drinking diet peach tea also, so that takes up some of my liquid intake. (I love that stuff!)
I've been taking my lunch to work each day, no fast food in days. Pretty good since when I fell OFF the wagon, I was eating Super Size value meals from McD's every day at work. Including the Fries! :o
I have 5 days OP under my belt... and I see it continuing! The only thing questionable I had was a 6-pack of chicken nuggets from Chick Fil A ... they're not heavily breaded, they're covered in spices and things. But it was at the ballpark... better than choosing hotdog, or pizza!!
Well... I have a TON of stuff to do today, just thought I would post MY week, and maybe it will be motivating to someone :)
Bye!
jane8760 05-12-2003, 12:05 PM Deb: where is your granola recipe that I have heard about on this site. I checked the recipe board but couldn't find it. I am not sure what it would be under.
YellowRose 05-12-2003, 02:05 PM Good Monday Morning,
One of the highlights of the weekend was talking with Monet. She is certainly a delight and I had such a
good time with the phone visit. I am hoping to see her in person this Sunday evening. We are traveling
through Atlanta on the way to North Carolina and we will be near her house on the way. We are still
working out the details but I am really looking forward to this treat.
I had a very nice Mother’s Day although my daughter was in Colorado and I was here. I received some
great cards from her and talked on the phone. We had sort of celebrated Mother’s Day when we went on
our little trip to the Austin area. My husband and I went to a friend’s house and had fun with the group
there. I did succumb to a tiny slice of cheese cake which was delicious but I passed on the white
potatoes. To eat anything with sugar is really a departure for me because I am usually strong but I went
for it that once but I will be very with the program today and throughout the week. The water challenge
will work for me but with all the packing, I am not optimistic enough to believe that I will meet the
exercise goal. I’ll do some, however.
Monet: Is there something I can bring you from Dallas? Whole Foods has had some agave in stock and
runs about $3.69( Well, $3 something) and I could bring you some if you can’t find it in Atlanta. The
telephone conversation was fun and we have even more in common than I suspected....cats, baking,
photography, great husbands...
Jack-K: I am looking forward to the pictures of the wedding. There are always a few things that don’t go
as we would like with such a detail intensive function as a wedding but it sounds like you didn’t let
anything spoil the day for you. That upbeat attitude is what makes the day special. I am glad it was such
a success and you had a great day. With the napkins, you will be able to use them for years and
remember the day fondly.
Zanne: Cleaning the whole place does not sounds like a minor thing to me. I hope the physical goes
well for you. Tomorrow I need to go have a blood test to see if they need to adjust my cholesterol meds.
I bet that cheesecake I ate yesterday shows up...yuck!
Jane: I am with you in wanting to eat whatever I want whenever I want but we both know that it is just
not meant to be for us. I go for long periods of time staying on program and getting good results, then
for no reason, I slip. But this is an ongoing way of life for me, so, I will keep trying. It sounds like you
have picked yourself up also and have a positive plan. Good! Deb’s granola recipe is marvelous. In
fact, I am making a double batch today to take on the road with me. Here is the recipe: I have to be
careful that I don’t over cook it.
ALMOND GRANOLA
1 1/2-2c Rolled oats
1/4 c Oat bran
1/4 c Sliced Almonds
1/2 Tsp. Ground cinnamon
2 Tables Vegetable oil
1/3 c Agave Syrup
1/2 Tsp. Vanilla extract
1/4 Tsp. Almond extract
Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Combine remaining ingredients and add to dry ingredients. Mix
until all ingredients are moistened.
Spread out on baking sheet and bake about 10 minutes. Remove from oven and redistribute. Return to
oven another 10 minutes, again redistributing after another 10 minutes. Return to oven for approx.
another 10 minutes, or until granola is lightly browned. Remove from oven and let cool. Granola will crisp
as it cools. Store in a air-tight container.
Deb: I just love Carraba’s. We are suppose to go out to dinner a lot this week and I hope that that
restaurant will be on the list. I love their chicken dishes and I can stay on program by ordering the
veggies instead of the pasta. Now the fat content is another matter, but I will adjust the portions.
Vesnoid: Hi! What are you doing with your pottery? I love the little bowl I was lucky enough to obtain at
the get together in Florida. That sugar devil can be a real meanie. You are strong, you can beat that
devil.
Beth: Hey, you are being a positive inspiration of what can be done when you stick with the plan. Who
makes the diet peach tea? It sounds good.
I suppose I should get busy with the packing. I need to cut down on the shoes I thought about taking. Ha!
TVthatsME 05-12-2003, 02:11 PM Hi all,
No time for long post. Sorry I've been MIA for a couple of weeks but work has been sooo busy and between both boys ballgames, rainouts, and tornado warnings I've been doing good to remember my head!!
Weight is staying the same. I've gotta try harder to get the downward motion going on again :)
Deb - I'm in on the water and exercise challenges this week! Just gotta do it!
I'm finishing up my 2nd 20 oz bottle of water right now. Gonna fill up again when I'm done!
catch ya'll later!
jane8760 05-12-2003, 02:27 PM I am about to start my second 30 oz. of water. I put Wylers in SF Pink lemonade in the first one to help it go down easier. This one I am drinking straight up.
I gotta go.....gotta pee :D
Beth2374 05-12-2003, 03:34 PM YELLOWROSE - Snapple makes a Diet Peach Tea that is VERY good, in case you find yourself wanting to get something at a conveneince store, etc. I buy the Crystal Light brand for making at home. I'm also a big fan of CL Pink Lemonade. I've begun taking that to work with me instead of buying diet cokes. Not sure they're any better for me, but there is no caffiene in lemonade!
TV - Good to see you made it thru the weather too!! I know how you feel. I'm working 2 jobs, both boys are playing baseball, and I'm getting ready to start training for a new job, plus taking care of the house, the bills... and then worrying about getting my truck fixed from the drunk that hit me last Sunday. But posting is the ONLY WAY I seem to be able to stay OP. I quit posting, fell off the wagon, got run over a few times (20 pounds worth!) and now I'm back on the board for a week and have lost about 6 pounds! Amazing what that water intake and getting rid of the FRIES will do for me! :) Email me sometime, we'll keep each other in line!
VESNA - It's so good to see you again!!! I wondered about you when I came back on the boards. You can get back on track, I know you can!! Although I think you're gorgeous like you are! It's still healthier to eat right!!
I'm off to work... why they are letting ME train my replacement is beyond me. I'm the least experienced clerk there...LOL. But she and I get along well, she's young and outgoing, and I'm outgoing :) She seems to be catching on well, and when I get her comfortable, I get to move to Dispatch and start my OWN 3 months of training!!
Have a Great Monday Everyone!!! I'm taking grilled chicken salad with cheese cubes and some grapes for a snack to work tonite!! GO ME!!
Bye
Ellen 05-12-2003, 04:20 PM Just a quick post. My daughter and son in law took me to a Mexican restaurant for lunch. I did great on what I ordered...stuffed poblanos, and double beans, no rice. Unfortunately, I ate some chips! I feel so full! groan!
Tonight is going to be another challenge. I have a leadership meeting at the church. I think the meal is spaghetti. I hope there is salad!
YELLOW: I can get agave here for $2.59 at my Whole Foods! I don't know what to ask you to bring! I will let you know if I think of something. I enjoyed talking with you too. I am looking forward to meeting you!
I need to head out in a few minutes to pick up a friend and take her to get her car from the mechanic. What a busy day I have had! Will hopefully be able to get on tonight and catch up.
Harley Grammy 05-12-2003, 04:32 PM Hello all!
I'm brand new to SB. I tried reading the book this past weekend. I even got the shopping guide. I was on the Atkins plan about 5 years ago. Great success - lost 25 lbs. Of course, those 25 lbs. are back on now. That's due to 5 years of a happy marriage. Anyway - I'm boring you. I've also tried Weight Watchers - lost 15 lbs. All back! I'm miserable! I'm unhappy with my weight and unhappy with my willpower.:( Where do I start? From what I have read, I need to rid my house of all sugar. I need to read all the labels carefully and avoid hidden sugar. I'm confused about what carbs are good and what are bad. No potatoes, pasta or white flour products. Any suggestions on breakfast and lunch ideas? Do we not count carbs like on Atkins?
Any suggestions to point me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! :^:
Deane
Jenn in MN 05-12-2003, 04:40 PM Hi everyone,
Does anyone have suggestions on finding Agave? My local Whole Foods doesn't carry it. :(
Not much time for a long post, because I'm swamped at work and need to get my paper written for the week when I get home. Ugh!
On the good side, I've been OP for one solid week now, no cheats! My Saturday weigh-in only shows 1 lb. loss, but I'm guessing I'm not eating enough (duh!). I haven't been hungry, but I know I need to get the calories in. I'm working harder on that this week!
Deb - I'm up for the challenges! I have a 64 oz. mug here at work, so my goal is to get through that each workday. Then I try to have 16 oz. in the morning before work, and 16 oz. after I get home. The exercise will be the problem for me. I need to get up 1/2 hour earlier and put in a tape, if nothing else. Wish me luck!
Jack-K - glad the wedding went so well! I know what you mean about it going by so fast.
Jane - I'd dilly-dallied about with being OP for a while, but then something just clicked (probably my loose brain) You are doing well. Hang in there!
Er, that's all I can remember right now. Forgot to take notes!
ttfn,
Jenn
jane8760 05-12-2003, 05:14 PM As I sit waiting for my doctors to call me back about my chronic fatigue!!!! I was on the web and found this article. I thought it was very interesting.
Fatigue -- don't just suffer through it!
Do you run out of energy in the afternoon? Find it hard to get out of bed in the morning? Wonder why you need more sleep than ever before?
Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of perimenopause. Many women attribute it to age as though it were inevitable. It isn't! You just need to understand the underlying causes.
So many factors increase fatigue in perimenopause. Sleep deprivation is the most obvious. Hot flashes and night sweats interrupt your sleep. Stress tends to be highest in mid-life, and stress alone, or the adrenal exhaustion it leads to over time, cause sleep disturbances. Thyroid function and melatonin synthesis, both important to normal sleep, are often affected by the changes in endocrine function in perimenopause.
Absent sleep deprivation, diet is the leading culprit. The low-fat, high-carbohydrate approach followed by most women is a metabolic mistake. Sugars and simple carbohydrates release high levels of insulin, which quickly leads to low blood sugar – the chemical basis of fatigue. A woman on this regime then must have a snack or caffeine (or both) to lift her energy level, and the unhealthy cycle begins again. Millions of Americans have over time become insulin-resistant, a condition that leads to diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
It’s a myth that artificial sweeteners are not as harmful as sugar. Just as they taste sweet on the tongue, they emulate sugar in the blood, leading to the same release of insulin. But since there is no extra blood sugar, the insulin works on the sugar available, which reduces energy further. Most “diet” sodas contain caffeine to offset this “down” effect, but caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline, which further upsets the insulin-sugar mechanism.
Ridding the body of sugars and simple carbohydrates monopolizes your metabolism, keeping it from performing other vital tasks. That process also consumes critical nutrients, especially B vitamins, that are needed for healthy cellular function. Most of us don’t realize how many sugars and simple carbs we consume.
The lack of healthy fat and protein is a related issue. Absent those nutrients, a woman's body can’t achieve hormonal balance, and fatigue is one result. Estrogen, for example, is synthesized from cholesterol.
Fatigue robs you of the energy you need to make the changes in your life called for in perimenopause. It also puts pressure on your work, your home life, and your relationships -- in short, it creates stress while making you less able to cope with it.
So – if you suffer from low energy, look first at sleep deprivation. If that isn’t your problem, examine your diet. Many women eat and drink too much of the wrong things, and not enough of the right things.
Solly 05-12-2003, 05:58 PM Well the day got away from me quickly. Lots of catching up to do.
Don't know if I'll get my exercise in tonight. Friends of our start softball season and DH likes to go watch and then doesn't know how to leave afterwards. Maybe I will walk up there (3 miles+).
Got to run.
Zanne, I bet your parents are glad they didn't have any more kids. They wouldn't have any body parts left. Good luck selling your property.
jane, I think you hit the nail on the head. What is it you really want? Only YOU can decide. Do you want to lose wt or eat something that will be gone in an instant? Keep some legal snacks around for those TOM cravings and hunger pangs.
Deb, Way to be a leader. Getting out there getting in your exercise even though it is so hot. Send me some of tht heat. It is only 65 here and windy. Almost cold. Congrats on such a legal Mother's Day dinner. Wish I could say the same. My meal was legal, but the bread and margaritta was not. Don't think the DJ would give a partial refund. It was a reduced price since he was a friend of the groom (don't you think he would have known his name if he were?) strange. Yes we will use the napkins, but I just hate that I forgot to put them out. Believe me. I criend like a baby during 8th grade graduations, high school and college graduations. It was a miracle that I didn't at the wedding. Glad you are enjoying the Yoga. I have a tape at home I need to try some time.
Vesnoid, try to hang in here. It is the best way to keep on track. Sounds like your exercise is getting going pretty good.
Beth, 5 days OP. Awesome. Keep up the good work. 6 lbs is great. I hope WIW is even better for you. Way to go on being prepared for work tonight. I'm sure those legal snacks will give you day 6 OP.
Lyn, How exciting that you get to meet with Monet on your trip. Have fun and take some pics.
TV, Glad you foudn time to drop in and say hi.
Monet, Remember our 7 day challenge and that will keep you OP tonight.
Harley Grammy, Welcome to SB and our board. Been inthe same shoes you have. Have actuall gottent o goal with WW 2 times. SB is something you can live with the rest of your life and not worry about putting it back on. So easy to do too. You only count starch carbs, which are ww bread, cereal, ww pasta, brown rice. 3 are allowed per day. You can have fruits and veggies too. So much better than Atkins and better for you too. Good luck. Keep on this board for support.
Jenn, congrats on being Op for a whole week. You can do this. It's smooth sailing now.
have a great OP night.
So far, 51 oz of water. Will get the rest in tonight.
Jackie
Rosalie 05-12-2003, 06:00 PM Good Afternoon All
I planned on doing some planting this morning but woke up to a rainy day so had to postpone it. My ds and dil bought me a rose bush for Mother's day. It's a Hybrid Tea called Peace. Pale gold with pink edges. Hope tomorrow is a better day so I can get it planted. I also got two azaleas, one from my dd and one from my ds. This is a 'plant in a bag' which I want to hang on my fence. Had a good day yesterday. Visited with my ds and his family then went to his mil for appetizers in the afternoon. We had barbecued chicken and shrimp and veggies - and a glass of red wine. In the evening my dil's Mom and I took the two grandkids out to dinner. I had rotisserie chicken breast with a garden salad and coleslaw. On the drive there I was thinking to myself that I would order the french fries for a change and I was really savouring the taste of them in my mind. But before I ordered I decided against them and went for the two salads instead. So I just stole a few from the two kids - cheating I know but better than a plateful. I also didn't eat the bun. Gave that to my gd.
Deb - I'll be in on the challenges. Not sure how I will do with the water. Don't always manage to get in enough but willl make more effort this week. Exercise is no problem as long as I can count badminton and line dancing!
Jack-K - Glad to hear that the wedding was a success. Looking forward to seeing some pictures. I'm sure you will find some use for those napkins.
Jane - We all have that feeling sometimes that we would like to eat anything we like but we know that we have to make some sacrifices if we want to see results on this woe. You talk about the 'hungry horrors' coming on. If you are really hungry that early in the morning then maybe you are not eating enough at breakfast time ( I'm assuming you had breakfast.) And if you are not eating enough that could be a reason why you are so tired.
Vesna - Sorry to hear you are under the sugar spell again. Just hop back on that wagon. Have fun roller-blading.
Beth - That's great news that you are back op and down 6 lbs. WTG.
Talitha and Harley Grammy - Welcome.
Jenn in MN - A one pound loss is better than gaining. Take every little bit you can.
Have to go and see how my pot roast is doing. I have a roast of pork cooking in cranberries and apple juice. Made this once before with cranberry sauce and it was yummy.
Bye for now.
Marie.
Debelli 05-12-2003, 06:17 PM Hey All:wave:
Thought I was coming home with my 2 kids, ended up with 5! MICHAEL has 3 friends here, funny thing is, he and his friend ALEX are fast asleep in his room, his friend SLY is sleeping out on the couch in the family room and his friend SEIKI (I'm SURE I'm not spelling that name right) is watching a movie in the family room. Needless to say, I'll be ordering pizza for the masses tonight:shrug:
Well, my Dad is BACK in the hospital. My DM just called. He went to see a Dr. today because his leg wasn't getting any better and was causing him a lot of discomfort. They decided to do a proceedure on the vein where there seems to be a blood clot that's not moving and probably causing some of the trouble. My Mom says it's a bit risky, but out of the 3 things they could do, was the lesser of all evils. She doesn't know how long this is suppose to take, so she'll be calling me back later with updates. He'll be in the hospital a few days once again, but then again, they said a few days last time and it turned in to 2 weeks. Just hoping this will all go well and provide him the relief he surely deserves. He's been really NASTY since all of this has been happening, and I sorta don't blame him, he doesn't like being incapacitated at all.
MONET, I wonder why there's such a price difference between WHOLE FOODS up there and down here. They are selling the agave for $4.69 - highway robbery, not that I need any-still stocked up well on my end. Can't wait for you and ROSE to meet - you'll love her, as she will you:D
HARLEY, http://members.aol.com/eldemila/sb_sign4.jpg Seems you do actually understand the main idea of SB. Don't be afraid to ask questions, that's how you'll learn. The book can be a bit confusing and contradictory. A good book to see if your library has is by MONTIGNAC called EAT YOURSELF SLIM, this book will better help explain some of the things not clear in the SB book, but then again, we can tell you those things as well, many which are on the RECOMMENDED READING BOARD here on our little area of the 3FC'S site. SB is nothing like Atkins, though SB does recommend at least 40% of your daily intake come from carbs, but doesn't limit carbs like Atkins does-you do NOT even want to think about induction, ketosis or anything of the sort. One website I highly recommend newbies read is: http://www.prettyimpressivestuff.com/sugarbusters Breakfast and lunch shouldn't be so hard-what types of foods do you like to eat. Breakfast, you have cereal, eggs, muffins, ww English muffins, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc., really, you can find a variety of things to eat. Lunch and dinner should be a breeze as well. Just continue to ask questions, we're more than happy to help answer them!!!!
JENN, have you asked them if they would order the agave for you? There are sights on the web, but the shipping ends up killing you in the long run, at least I think so. If you need the SKU number so they could see if they can get it, let me know and I'll send it to you. Ask them if they could get SWEET CACTUS FARMS, though I do remember Trish mentioning a new brand out on the market, though I can't remember the name:shrug: Keep up the great work of staying OP, but def. make sure you are eating enough or the weight will just hold, and stubbornly so!
JANE, very good artcile, thanks for posting it!
JACKK, oh, don't I wish I could just box this heat up and ship it to you, it would be my pleasure. I'd take your weather any day, minus the tornados that have been around, you can just keep those - aren't I sweet?!? Darn, I'm not going to let you beat me with the water - haven't gotten in that much, but now you are going to push me to get in some more!!!!
ROSALIE, of COURSE you can count both badminton and line dancing, that sure does count as exercise! Sounds like you had a nice Mother's Day and the rose bush sounds beautiful. I have to agree, a few fries snatched off the plate is better than having a plateful of your own;)
Okay, I'm outta here!!!

BOB
Rosalie 05-12-2003, 07:44 PM I've just finished my eighth glass of water for to-day. I've been guzzling and running for the potty ever since I got home. :flow1:. Probably have a couple more before bedtime.
Marie.
Rosalie 05-12-2003, 07:47 PM Deb - Sorry to hear that your dd is in hospital again. Hope they can do something to fix the problem this time.
BOB - Hope those 222's do something for that pain.
Off to do some reading.
Marie.
Jenn in MN 05-12-2003, 07:55 PM Hi everyone, another quick check-in before I get to writing that paper.
Bad news - DH's van broke down, so I had to leave work early and have it towed. We're borrowing a vehicle from his mom, but I am so bummed. Just when we thought we might have some $ saved up, this happens. :(
Good news - I'm still OP. Stressed and tempted, but still OP. That van's not worth me undoing everything I've worked so hard for this week.
Water Challenge - I got my water in! Drank all 64 oz. at work, plus about 8 this A.M. and probably more tonight. Yay! :)
Exercise Challenge - Er, we'll see. Maybe go for a walk after dinner. It's beautiful here today!
Gotta run, pot roast is almost done. Nothing like coming home from work and having the house smell all yummy and the crockpot doing the hard work. AND I put cabbage in with the potatoes and carrots, so I can have an OP veggie and not the starch. Double Yay!
Sorry, being so stressed financially, I've got to have something positive to focus on, right? ;)
ttfn,
Jenn
sugarless 05-12-2003, 08:44 PM Deb - I have never heard of Sheltons Pot Pies. Are they SB legal if so were can you get them?
Talitha 05-12-2003, 11:09 PM Debbie-thank you so much for the encouragement. I really feel like this diet will improve my health, and give me more energy. I do not even have the book yet so I am going on what my sister has told me. I noticed thast the diet is similar to what I have been doing on my own since Selah (my baby) and I have already droped from 210 when I found out I was prego to 189 last Thurs. I think the book will give me the structure that I am missing, because I really have no idea what I am doing. I have just been making my own bread and eating WW pasta and tons of vegetables and soy products. Can I still use soy milk instead of regular milk? I'll get the book tomorrow and work on my eating schedule to make sure that I am eating enough!
So here is a little bit about me. I live in Marietta,GA just 15 miles NW of Atlanta. I'm 25 years old. I have fought with my weight since I was 13 years old, when I was anorexic and bulemic. Unfortunately, I have this way of either obsessing about my wieght or ignoring it, so I am usually either a size 6 or a size 16, but never a healthy in between. I am trying to treat this diet as a lifestyle change rather than a diet. I just want to be healthy and teach Sealah to be healthy from the beginning. Travis (my husband) wants to do the diet, but says he needs 4 svgs of starch a day. Do youthink he will still lose weight?
I was homeschooled my whole life, and I have 6 brothers and 3 sisters. I'm #4 in line. I usually have lots to say about myself, but I can't think of anything. Right now I am working part time doing Market Research Studies and Full time being a mom. Ummm.... I speak Spanish because I lived in South America for almost a year working with Street Kids. I jsut can't think of anything else interesting. Oh well.
Ok so the 3 challenges are water, exercise and What? I didn't get the last one. What is OP??
I am really looking forward to getting to know you all. Do you have bios that I can look at on everyone to catch up on all of the fun? And how can I post a picture with my name?
Jen in MN- I know what you mean about the car trouble. We have only been married 2 years and planned to wait another year to have a baby. Apparently, God thought we were ready NOW, and we couldn't be happier. It's been a bumpy ride though. We got a really gread deal on a Passat 2 years ago but the engine just blew in Feb, so we only have one car. The warranty was up in Oct. and it is going to be $5000 to fix!!! In the meantime, we are already almost buckled by the payments since I stopped working. It's really tough, and I expect I may have to get a job soon, but I want to be with Selah as long as possible.
Anyway, I only have the computer late at night because Travis takes it to work, but I will try to get on every day.
Talitha
Talitha 05-12-2003, 11:22 PM Ummmm, what is Agave? If everyone's talking about it it must me something I could use!! :)
Teensybean 05-12-2003, 11:57 PM Monday night-- Cold, windy and rainy today. Stayed in and cleaned the house. Boring, but now it doesn't smell like dogs!! Need to get these relplies in so will do better tomorrow!
Monet-- Good morning! It is night time here, but I just wanted to get to say that to you!! LOL. The Mexican food sounds so good. I was going to make chicken enchilada's to take over to my grandma's Saturday, but my Aunt was doing shrimp stir fry for the main dish. So I will do them sometime this week. I have also been thinking about pizza alot this week. Need to get busy. It is easy if the weather stays bad.
Jack k-- I am so happy that everything was so wonderful. Now, the happy couple will begin their beautiful life together. You must be so proud! Sorry that the DJ wasn't the best.....but all in all it sounds like it was all spectacular!!
Zanne-- Hang in there, this week will be alot better for you. Sounds like you got most of the hard stuff done, and are just left with the boring job of cleaning huh?? Hope it will be a fast seller for you!
Jane-- Isn't it amazing how much heat men can generate. I can feel the heat from my Dh a good six inches away from him. When I get cold, I want to cuddle up to his back, and it only takes a few minutes and then I am usually just right. Sorry to hear TOM is giving you such a hard time. Feel better soon.
Deb-- I guess I should have known that our weather wouldn't last. Cold, windy, and rainy today. At the rate of sounding like a hick.....what is Tiramisu?? Good for you, that was a hugh victory over that Tiramisu. I too love Raspberries. Hope these will do good. Still need to get stuff planted, but I will not go out and freeze to do it. Won't grow yet anyway!! So very sorry to hear about your DD. Please keep us informed, will be praying for you and the family.
Beth-- Woo Hoo sounds like you are doing just great!! You go girl!!
Yellowrose-- Sounds like you and Monet will have a wonderful time together. I hope you won't beat yourself up over the cheese cake. If this is to be a WOL, you will undoubtably have to give in every once in awhile. Moderation is the key, and getting right back OP. Packing must be exercise too don't you think?? It can be very hard work.
HarleyG-- Welcome to Sugar Busters!! You will get some great help here. I am still fairly new to this..... but everyone here has been a tremendous help.
Jenn--Way to go!! One week down!! It will all come together for you, I just know it will.
BOB-- Sorry you are still in pain!! I wish there was some way I could help. Hang in there!!
Rosalie-- Sounds like you had a wonderful Mother's Day!! The rose sounds beautiful. And the dinner even better, LOL!
Will be back later.... or tomorrow!!
Rosalie 05-12-2003, 11:57 PM Glad you have decided to join us. I'll try to answer some of your questions. OP means on plan. SB recommends no more than 2-3 starchy carbs per day to lose weight. But given that men usually find it much easier than women to lose weight it is possible that your dh may lose by continuing to have 4 starchy carbs a day as long as he cuts out the white stuff, like white flour, white rice, except basmati which is allowed, and eats whole grains, brown rice, lots of veggies and of course protein. You can also eat lentils and dried peas and beans. Most of these are good to include in your diet as they are mainly low glycemic so don't cause rapid rise in blood sugar and insulin levels. Agave is a liquid sweetener made from the agave plant (this is the plant that tequila is made from) and has a low glycemic index. We do have a BIO BOARD. If you go to the top of this page and click on SUGAR BUSTERS then click on INFORMATION BOARDS you will see our Bio Board as well as there are several other information boards you may want to look at.
To add a picture or AVATAR under your name go to the top of this page and click on User CP then click on Edit Options. There you can choose an avatar or add one of your own. If you post your BIO and want to add a picture underneath, after you have typed in your message before submitting the post go to the bottom of the page and click on BROWSE. Then you can go through your files to select your picture. Hope all this helps.
Bye for now.
Marie.
Ellen 05-13-2003, 08:29 AM Only have a minute..gotta go get my son and give him a ride to work. Last night was NOT good. I need to get back on the wagon seriously today. The last few days have been the worst I have been in over two years! I am not looking forward to WIW, but I think it will be theraputic. Catch you all later!
TALITHA: Welcome, Neighbor! I live in Duluth, near Peachtree Corners and Norcross. You can get Agave at Harry's Whole Foods. I get it at the Gwinnett store. It is near the honey. Its great to have another Georgian on the board! It sounds like we have some things in common...I homeschooled my children for eight or nine years. My son is 24 now...and my youngest is a junior in high school. (I did not feel like I could homeschool through high school, tho I have friends who did it...)
The Quilter 05-13-2003, 08:56 AM Tuesday Morning---
Here's a quickie check in before I head out to work. Sorry I didn't get on last night to respond. Came home, started cutting the grass (Paul finished, God bless him!). Then I got a bath and went to bed while it was still light out. Boy, was I one pooped critter!
We are leaving for St. Louis on Thursday night. Will stop in Indy to leave Maddie at DB's and then head out Friday morning. I'm not sure how much I'll be on this week because I have a meeting tomorrow night and need to get our things laid out tonight. One of Paul's brothers is graduating from college, so the whole family is going out to celebrate this accomplishment.
Last week my eating STUNK. I was really having trouble staying focused. So instead of laying a guilt trip on me, I gave myself a couple of days off. Didn't journal or weigh anything. So yesterday, I started back and had a great day. Really kept track of all the eating. Feels good to be back in line with what I need to do.
DEB---Just skimmed the board, but sad to see that your Dad is back in the hospital. Did I tell you about our neighbor who had part of his colon removed not too long ago? Well, he really went through a tough time for a few weeks. He had a high fever and then some other complications and it was touch and go for a while. But he's doing great now. As a matter of fact, he started back at driving last week and there's no keeping him home. It just takes these older guys longer to recuperate. (Don't tell DD I said that! LOL) I'll keep him, your mom and his doctors in my prayers.
Okay, everyone else, have a GREAT day. Today is my honey's birthday. So I'm extra grateful for him and his special day.
Hugs to all.
Kim
Solly 05-13-2003, 09:40 AM Good tuesday Morning.
Hope everyone is ready to have a great OP day!
I am proud to report that I got in 131 oz of water yesterday. I think that is a record for me. I took a 32 oz cup to the ballpark and drank 2 of them, plus all I had during the day. I must say there is something to drinking alot of water. I have lost 3 of the 4 lb gain from the weekend. I guess it really does flush it out.
We stayed too long at the ballpark last night and I am :tired: today.
Didn't get any exercise yesterday, but today will be a different story. After we go to the grocery I plan to walk and workout.
My niece took some digital pictures at the wedding so I will post them as soon as she gets them to me. I should have had her take them Thursday, when it looked more like a normal picture instead of all dressed up and hair fixed.
Rosalie, I love those plants in a bag. A lot of people hang them over their mailboxes and they look so pretty. WTG on passing up the fries.
Deb, Hoping all goes well with your dad. I know how irritated he must be with all this. Prayers for a successful surgery.
Bob, Did you ask about cortisone shots? You need to get something to help you. Pictures are coming, I promise.
Jenn, sorry to hear about your car troubles. You're right, don't let that undo all the good you are doing. I love using my crockpot. Nothing better than coming home to a cooked dinner.
Talitha, Welcome, you joined us while I was away last week. SB is such a healthy way of eating (WOE). You will be happy with it. OP is on program. My husband does this with me, but he ususally takes 2 sandwiches for lunch. He has lost about 40 pounds and never gave up his beer. Men tend to lose quicker anyway. Keep coming to this board, it will really help you stay OP.
Teensy, It is cold and rainy here too. What happened to summer. I think Deb is hoarding it all.
Monet, I think getting on that scale after cheating is a good wake up call. I know I have to do it. I was going to avoid it until WIW, but got on there Monday to face the music. It keeps me in line more.
Kim, Birthday wishes to Paul. Hope he has a great day. Have a wonderful trip. Don't worry abut last week. It is over and this is a new week. You have done so great, you will pick right up again and be fine.
Need to get busy here.
Have a great OP day.

jane8760 05-13-2003, 09:55 AM
I have to tell you all that you are so supportive. Yesterday after my pitty post I was thinking that I should leave this board because I have not been very successful on this WOE. But after reading all your posts (and not just in response to me) I don't feel that way anymore. I have to stay on some kind of program and this one is so doable. I am striving for an OP day if it kills me today. I had my carnation instant breakfast this morning (SF by the way) with skim milk. I made some WW pizza dough last night and it actually rose!!!!! Not real high but at least it rose!
How is that Monet! This time I followed the reciped that (forgive I didn't look at the post) "someone" posted the other day and it worked! I am having a small pizza for lunch (when I say small I mean it is only a 6" round. My DB and SIL gave me these small pizza pans years ago and they are great for making individual pizza's.
I also brought some grapes and some cheese with me today. I have my sunflower seeds for munching. I will need something else at some point. I don't know what I am having for dinner yet. I will have to think about it today because I'm sure that my DH will call and ask "what's for dinner?".
Rosalie: I did not know that basmati rice as legal. I love that stuff. I'm sure that you can only have a small amount but it will still be better than plain old brown rice.
Monet: you would be proud of me with the dough! Now how do I get it to COMPLETELY rise?
Deb: Sorry to hear that your DD is in the hospital again. I hope he is home soon. How is your DM doing through all of this?
Talitha: Welcome. Like they did with me, everyone here will make you feel right at home.
Jenn MN: Sorry about the financial woes. How is the med doing? Do you feel any better. It may take a while so hang in there.
BOB: where do you get all those avatars? The images that you add are great.
Jack-K: You are right. I don't know what I want more....the food or the smaller body. I have to decide and until I do I will continue to flownder I suppose.
Well, I am sure I missed a few. Sorry about that.
I am in some serious neck pain today.
I have always had this problem with my neck. If I get stressed or move JUST the wrong way my neck locks up and I can't move it left or right. It stinks! The only thing I can do is use heat and Advil. Sleeping is the worst! I said to myself last night "you better put some heat on this thing and stop it before it starts" but NO! I didn't and today I am paying for it. Oh well, enough wining.
Have a great day.
Debelli 05-13-2003, 10:50 AM Good Tuesday Morning Everyone:wave:
Got in from my walk/jog. Today I did something a little different, for the most part, I walked a minute then jogged a minute than reverted back. The new walkman I got will be at different intervals so I set it on every minute. Didn't feel like I was killing myself and still had a half-way decent time of 53:22:D
Eating continues to be perfectly on track - I wish I could always remember how good I feel when I eat OP when something seems to throw me off! Last night though, I ate really late. ELI came home and made my fav. eggplant dish and I ate 3/4 of the tray - what a pig I can be:pig: It's all legal, nothing but eggplant, tomato, onion, ground beef (very lean) pine nuts, tomato sauce and spices - YUMMY!!!!!
My DD's procedure seemed to go well. He's supposedly suppose to be in the hospital til Thursday, barring no complications. Chemo is to start in the next week or two. Will go to the hospital today and see him.
Have to take the kids and myself after school to get an eye exam. MICHAEL has complained that he feels his eyes have gotten worse (he already wears glasses) and LAUREN has never had her eyes checked, so more like preventative medicine. I need to get mine checked, it's been a few years.
Have a few other errands to get done today, though nothing exciting!
Got my Palm Pilot yesterday, wonderful condition, just as was stated in the auction. Now, it will probably take me forever to figure out the basics and even longer for anything more advanced:rolleyes:
BOB, hope the 222's help. Ummm, your sweetie brought home the key chain, it was MY idea to send it to you:) He can still be your sweetie though:love:
ROSALIE, I guess you're really hitting the URINATION STATION tonight! Reading anything worthwhile?
JENN, sorry to hear about the van. My car needs to be serviced badly, needs a major tune-up but I keep putting it off. I have to get it done in the next couple months though, since I'll be taking MICHAEL up the east coast to look at colleges in August it seems and I sure don't need to get stuck anywhere, that's for sure! Keep on plugging away girl, you're doing great! See, once you get that sugar out of your system, I'm convinced that you can stay OP through good and bad times:cp:
SUGAR, the Sheltons are legal, delicious and you should be able to find them at your local HFS (hopefully). Do you have a WHOLE FOODS or WILD OATS near you? If not, see if someone can order you a case - I believe there's only 6 to a case and if you eat one, you'll probably eat a case in a week, well, maybe not, but I do:)
TALITHA, you can get the book at your local library, it's an easy read, or a used one even on line. Again, check your library for MONTIGNAC'S book as well, it's good to get if you can. You've done wonderful since your DD was born with your weight loss, congratulations. SB will just help you along your journey on losing whatever weight you'd like to. Yes, you can still use soy, just make sure it's unsweetened. I actually just started to like soy and found the WESTBRAE unsweetened is really good, esp. in cereal, but I only use a little. Thanks for sharing a bit more about yourself! It was nice to learn some more about you. I love the Marietta/Roswell areas of GA-so pretty up there! You will be happy to know MONET lives not far from you in Hotlanta-you and her should at least exchange telephone numbers (if you'd like), she's really sweet! We got to meet last year when I was passing through - we met over at Harry's! You asked about agave, she'll tell you exactly where you can get it, actually, she mentioned to YELLOWROSE, who shes' going to meet up with this Sunday in Atlanta that WHOLE FOODS has the agave there, and the price is cheaper than I can get down here. I use it in baking as it's low glycemic and able to be used on this WOE (way of eating). WOW, you do come from a big family, you DM must be have the patience of a saint!!! The last challenge is for next week, when I post the weekly poll, the question will be "HOW MANY DAYS WERE YOU 100% OP (on plan) and I'm hoping to have many post 7 days!!!:D Good luck to TRAVIS as well, and yes, he'll probably need more starchy carbs, esp. if he's really physical. I hope ROSALIE was able to answer some of your questions as well. Again, don't be afraid to ask questions, as you can see, we're ready and willing to help!:D Also, you can check out our PHOTO ALBUM BOARD which is also on the SB INFORMATION BOARD area.
TEENSY, I'll take your cold, you can keep the wind and rain;) Tiramisu is an Italian dessert, has liquor in it, marscapone cheese, sugar, suppose to be made with lady fingers but the one I like has thin cake layers, not sure what else, but when it's made good, it's to die for!!! There use to be a place near us called Italiani's that had the BEST tiramisu, but they closed:( Now I go for the one at WHOLE FOODS if I want it, but of course, I'm trying to stay away from it now!!!
MONET, do I need to call you??? Get it out of your system, eat whatever it is that you THINK you want to eat and then get back on track. If you aren't ready, it's not going to work, been there, done that-you'll know when you're ready. Usually for me, it's the feeling like crap, stuffed out of my gourd and feeling like I'm going to be sick as a dog, and clothes that are so tight that I can't seem to breath!!!! You'll do it!!!
QUILTER, tell PAUL HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!:hb: Have a great time in St. Louis. Hope you don't run in to any bad weather. Actually, the colon isn't giving my DD problems, it's the blood clots in the legs-not sure which is worse! Glad to hear you're back on track!!
JACKK, okay, you beat me with the water and probably visits to the URINATION STATION as well. I got side tracked and didn't get in enough water yesterday I know. Will work on it better today. Darn, if you lost that much from drinking water I BETTER get in my water!!! I need a loss like that!
JANE, if you think you're the first or even the last to post a pitty post, WRONG! We've all done it. That's one of the great things about this board and the people on it, we ALL understand where each one of us is coming from in times like that, we've ALL been there at one time or another, or on many occasions;) Did you read what I posted for you yesterday? Any thoughts to it? My DM is just fine, she thinks of this as time away from my Dad to clean the house! Hope your neck gets better!! Good luck today on staying OP, do your best, that's all you can do!
TONIGHT IS CHAT AT 9:15PM EST!!!! Hope you can join me in the chat room tonight. As far as I can see, there shouldn't be a problem with me getting in there - will give the kids fair warning!
And of course, for all of you brave souls, TOMORROW IS WEIGH IN WEDNESDAY!!! Good luck to those who so willfully step on the metal monster!!!
Gotta run!

Glycemic Index/Glycemic Load
_
Professor Jennie-Brand Miller of the University of Sydney published July 2002 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, pages 5-56.
_
The glycemic index (GI) is a numerical system of measuring how fast a carbohydrate triggers a rise in circulating blood sugar. The higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. A low GI food will cause a small rise, while a high GI food will cause a dramatic spike. A GI of 70 or more is high, a GI of 56 to 69 is medium, and a GI of 55 or less is low.
The glycemic load (GL) assess the impact of carbohydrate consumption that takes the glycemic index into account, but gives a more accurate picture than does glycemic index alone. A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into sugar. It doesn’t tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of food. You need to know both things to understand how a food’s carbohydrate effects blood sugar. This is where glycemic load comes in. A GL of 20 or more is high, a GL of 11 to 19 is medium, and a GL of 10 or less is low.
Foods that have a low GI invariably have a low GL, but foods with an intermediate or high GI range from very low to very high GL. Therefore, you can reduce the GL of your diet by limiting foods that have both a high GI and a high carbohydrate content.
The GI is based on the glucose index and is what we refer to (Some are based on White Bread) where glucose is set to equal 100. The glycemic load is the glycemic index divided by 100 multiplied by its available carbohydrate content (i.e. carbohydrates minus fiber) in grams. Watermelon for example has a high glycemic index of about 72. According to the University of Sydney's Human Nutrition Unit, a serving size of 120 grams of watermelon has 6 grams of available carbohydrate per serving, so its glycemic load is very low, 72/100*6=4.32, rounded to 4.
But what if your meal contains protein and fat as it usually does? Will that affect our mixed meal calculations?
The it's believed that that between 50 to 60% of protein becomes glucose and enters the bloodstream about 3 to 4 hours after it's eaten. It's widely accepted that fat has little affect on blood glucose. However, recent studies indicate that neither protein nor fat have more than a minuscule affect on blood glucose. This seems to be true for people both with and without diabetes. The protein studies are particularly interesting.
In the long term it seems protein and fats affect blood glucose levels by having the distinct potential to induce insulin resistance. The result of course would mean that any carbohydrate would raise blood glucose and insulin levels to greater levels on a day to day basis. The type of fat seems to be important here. A study in Diabetologia showed that moderately high monounsaturated fatty acids diets improved insulin sensitivity and if the fat was less than a certain level (higher than 37% was associated with insulin resistance)."

Summary & Links
_
1) The glycemic index divided by 100 multiplied by its available carbohydrate content (i.e. carbohydrates minus fiber) in grams.
2) You can quite readily predict the glycemic index of a mixed meal. Simply multiply the percent of total carbohydrate of each of the foods by its glycemic index and add up the results to get the glycemic index of the meal as a whole.
(If you're having three foods, 65 + 59 + 82 = 206 / 3 = 68.7 or 69) You can also figure GL the same way!
3) Meals high in fat tends to reduce the impact of any one carbohydrate food. However, the type of fat and amount seems to be important here.
4) You can use the USDA Nutrient Database to determine the available carbohydrates in the given serving size.
5) A short list of foods showing their glycemic index- produced by Professor Jennie-Brand Miller of the University of Sydney.
Debelli 05-13-2003, 10:54 AM I found this on a diabetic website and thought it was an interesting read. I personally don't use fructose. Just passing this on for insight:
I'm a diabetic (adult onset). Why is fructose better for me than regular table sugar?
A. Crystalline fructose is a refined and simple sugar. It will not raise blood sugars as high as table sugar (sucrose). Sucrose will break down into glucose and fructose, and actually affects blood sugar levels less than starch, which is broken down quickly into pure glucose ("New Sugar Guidelines" in DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT, July/Aug 94). This is why the glycemic index of a potato is so high compared to ice cream. Ice cream has fat and protein combined with the sugar which slows down the absorption, causing a lesser affect on blood sugar levels.
If you want to avoid refined sweeteners, don't let the healthy-sounding name and its ubiquitous presence in the health food store fool you! It's true that fructose is the chief sugar found in fruit (along with sucrose and glucose). It is also one of the sugars found in honey (again, along with glucose and sucrose). However, it is a very highly processed sugar and is, believe it or not, more frequently derived from *corn* than from fruit. Unless your fructose is specifically labeled otherwise, assume that it came from corn and is like very highly refined corn starch. Since it takes the body longer to convert fructose to glucose so there is less of an effect on blood sugar. However, it has risks as well: it may put one at risk of heart disease and high blood pressure and has been shown to raise triglyceride levels.

The New GI Tracts
For preventing heart disease, diets that control insulin are all the buzz
Janet Raloff
It's hard to meander down the health-and-nutrition aisles of book megastores without encountering displays for competing diet guides. The books target different parts of the population—people struggling with obesity, lack of pep, or various diseases. Recently, there's been an explosion of volumes for a condition that some authors claim affects one-tenth to one-third of people in the United States. People usually don't know whether they have this characteristic, called insulin resistance, but if they do, they face an unusually high risk of developing heart disease.
Two new tomes offering ways to diminish health complications of insulin resistance share the same title—Syndrome X—the medical name for a constellation of abnormalities that often develop in insulin-resistant individuals (SN: 9/16/89, p. 184). These include increases in blood pressure (SN: 10/14/89, p. 254), the length of time fats circulate in the blood, and the share of cholesterol residing in especially small, low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), which pose a potent heart-attack risk (SN: 9/21/96, p. 182: http://www.sciencenews.org/sn_arch/9_21_96/fob3.htm). Syndrome X differs from diabetes in that the body can still produce enough insulin to cope with its elevated blood sugar.
Both books move away from the low-fat mantra that has pervaded major health guidelines for the general population during the past decade and campaign instead for limits on carbohydrates—sugary and starchy fare. The approaches to managing carbs, however, differ dramatically, reflecting a sharp dichotomy in the research community.
One of the Syndrome X books, by Jack Challem (2000, John Wiley & Sons), recommends that people with this problem select fare with a low glycemic index (GI). In these foods, carbohydrates break down slowly in the digestive system to provide the blood glucose that powers cells. Challem and his coauthors reason that this sluggish digestion will keep blood-glucose concentrations fairly low, enabling the body to metabolize this sugar via a stable, moderate production of insulin.
In the other new book with the same title (2000, Simon & Schuster), Stanford Medical School endocrinologist Gerald Reaven—who first defined syndrome X in 1988—asserts that the easiest way to maintain steady, moderate insulin concentrations is to keep body weight low, avoid bingeing on food, and steer clear of low-fat diets while limiting saturated fats. Indeed, he told Science News, "the last thing I'd worry about is glycemic index."
Yet the term glycemic index is entering the public lexicon, not to mention medical symposia, health guidelines, and nutritional prescriptions. Fueling this interest is a rapidly growing body of research reporting tantalizing prospects for diets guided by the rate at which their carbohydrates are digested. Some researchers suggest that such diets can also foster weight loss (see below: "Glycemic index for weight loss?") and perhaps even slow or prevent the development of type II diabetes.
Although the authors of these studies are quick to acknowledge limitations in their data—often owing to small test groups or short trials of diets—many are enthusiastic about the potential health payoff from managing insulin via the diet, especially in people with no apparent risk factors for diabetes.
In fact, to nutritional epidemiologist Simin Liu of the Harvard Medical School in Boston, the work on glycemic index "is the most fascinating and promising area in nutrition research today."
Getting research rolling
Reaven takes credit for getting research on the glycemic index rolling some 30 years ago. That's when his team at Stanford first began investigating the rates at which different starches break down.
Starches, a family of carbohydrates, consist of linked glucose molecules. The prevailing view had been that once in the digestive system, the glucose units would uncouple at some common rate and enter the blood. For any given quantity of starch eaten, then, the rise and fall of blood-glucose concentrations—and insulin—should be identical.
In fact, Reaven showed, starchy foods can release their glucose at very different rates. He found that baked potatoes and bread release their glucose quickly, and rice and cooked corn parcel it out more slowly. One study by his team showed that the gut even digests a single type of rice at different rates depending on how it has been milled. "This really emphasized the importance of the physical properties of a food," he recalls.
Nutritionists quickly translated such findings into new recommendations for people with diabetes. Many began advising patients who need to control their blood-sugar concentrations to eat less-processed forms of a food—such as whole carrots instead of grated ones or firm instead of overcooked pasta.
To Reaven and several others, however, the greatest significance of those early studies was their implications for people who hadn't been diagnosed with diabetes.
"The first actual measurements of insulin resistance probably took place around 1970, with techniques that we introduced," Reaven recalls. These and later studies would show that although much of the nondiabetic population makes what should be adequate amounts of insulin, some people have trouble using the hormone.
Certain tissues—notably, muscle and fat—can't absorb glucose from blood unless it's shepherded by insulin. In nondiabetic people with insulin resistance, normal concentrations of the hormone are insufficient, for reasons that remain unknown. The body compensates by pumping out increasingly larger amounts of the hormone.
Genetic predisposition and obesity can both contribute to insulin resistance. The more insulin-resistant a person becomes, the more insulin that person makes. In some cases, resistance eventually leads to type II diabetes, in which the body can't reliably make enough insulin to compensate for resistance. Reaven observes that most people, however, just rev up their insulin production to increasing levels, as needed—an adaptation that represents a mixed blessing.
The resulting overproduction, called hyperinsulinemia, can damage blood vessels and prompt the liver to increase its output of very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs). These compounds have been linked to increased risk of heart disease. Also, as they circulate in the blood, VLDLs trigger a fall in high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the so-called good cholesterol (SN: 9/9/89, p. 171). The other changes seen in syndrome X, Reaven adds, may also be the result of hyperinsulinemia trying to overcome insulin resistance.
Reaven contends that for people with insulin resistance, carbohydrate-rich diets are at least as dangerous as those laden with saturated fats.
Breakdown rates
Some 20 years ago, David J.A. Jenkins of the University of Toronto also began worrying about the dangers that certain carbohydrates might pose to insulin-resistant people. To investigate these risks, he needed to know the breakdown rates of comestibles containing carbs. So his team began feeding a battery of foods to healthy individuals and ranking the foods' glycemic indexes on a 100-point scale, where 100 is pure glucose. The higher the GI values, the more rapidly carbohydrates turn into blood sugar.
"These studies are quite expensive," which explains their slow accumulation in the medical literature, says Jennie Brand-Miller of the University of Sydney, Australia, who has done many of her own. But such studies prove essential, she adds, because GI rankings often turn out to be counterintuitive.
For instance, the GIs for ice cream and chocolate milk tend to fall under 50, she's found, while that for baked potatoes can range from 75 to 100, depending on the type of potato.
Once GIs were measured for a range of foods, Jenkins' group began giving volunteers diets with a low or high rating. "And we showed that diets based on low-GI carbohydrates improved [serum] triglyceride levels, total cholesterol levels, and the ratio of LDLs to HDLs," Jenkins says.
His crew also observed signs of other advantages, he says, such as better removal of urea wastes from the blood and inklings that limiting hyperinsulinemia via the diet might limit cancer growth. A just-completed follow-up study, he says, lends strong support to the idea that a low-GI diet can fight cancer.
However, Jenkins points out, the quantity and quality of a food's fiber can prove pivotal to its GI. "It was therefore hard to tell whether changes were due simply to low-GI intakes, to fiber, or both," he says.
"Fiber and glycemic index are intimately mixed up in a way that most people don't understand," Brand-Miller explains. Fiber can slow the digestion of associated carbohydrates—but only if the fiber remains an intact part of the original food.
For instance, she notes, whole grains tend to have a GI of 50 or so. But mill those grains, and their fiber will be crushed into small shards that separate from the carbohydrates they had been protecting. Whole-grain flours and refined white flour both usually yield breads with a GI of about 70, she notes.
Vitriolic debates
About 15 years ago, Jenkins says, "vitriolic" debates broke out between factions of the nutrition community that were warming to the value of GI-tailored diets and that thought them a waste of time. Eventually tiring of the politics "and venom," Jenkins says, he switched his research focus.
Others, however, continued to probe the value of controlling insulin through diet.
While at the Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine in Amsterdam, Johannas B. Ruige reviewed 17 studies that had looked at cardiovascular risks from hyperinsulinemia. His analysis noted that it was hard to compare the studies because of differences in their designs. Also, most were small; seven contained fewer than 20 subjects each.
Still, he told Science News, "we saw some increasing risk with increasing insulin levels." Overall, "it was a very small effect," perhaps an increase in cardiovascular disease risk of 15 or 20 percent, he says.
Gary Frost of Hammersmith Hospitals in London has also been homing in on the ways that food choices affect insulin. By changing the diet of heart-disease patients, for instance, "we showed that a low-GI diet improves insulin sensitivity," he says. Recently, his team analyzed diets in a cross-section of British adults—1,420 men and women participating in a study of heart risks. Searching for links between HDLs and various facets of the diet, such as fats and carbohydrate consumption, only one strong correlating factor emerged: glycemic index.
The 20 percent of the volunteers eating foods having the lowest GI possessed substantially higher HDL concentrations than the 20 percent eating the highest-GI foods. In women, the HDL difference between groups came to 9.7 milligrams per deciliter of blood. That should translate to a 29 percent reduction in coronary heart disease mortality for the low-GI group, Frost's team concluded in the March 27, 1999 Lancet. Men eating low-GI fare showed a similar though smaller HDL boost.
"We believe that what's going on is that these low-GI foods attenuated the insulin response of the diet," Frost told Science News.
Using 10 years of data collected from more than 75,000 women in the long-running Nurses Health Study, Liu says his team at Harvard "basically confirmed what Frost found." The Harvard researchers showed that average daily glycemic load—the amount of carbohydrates downed, adjusted for the GI values of the food typically eaten—"was directly associated with risk of coronary heart disease," Liu says. Even after taking into account other potentially confounding risk factors, people who routinely ate the lowest glycemic load had only about half the incidence of heart disease as those eating the highest load.
The trend was strongest among the heaviest women, Liu notes. Since obesity tends to increase an individual's risk of insulin resistance, he notes, this study again finds evidence that hyperinsulinemia could explain the link between carbohydrate consumption and the increased incidence of heart disease.
Nutritionist James J. Kenney argues that many studies that purport to find advantages to low-GI diets have been flawed. They tend to offer participants equal-calorie portions of high- and low-GI fare. Because high-carbohydrate foods are usually not as energy dense as high-fat alternatives, it becomes hard to down excessive calories on high-carb diets, Kenney asserts. In people who don't overeat, he says, high-carb diets don't seem to lead to the worrisome metabolic features of syndrome X. Kenney works in Santa Monica, Calif., at the Pritikin Longevity Center, which promotes diets of low-fat foods with low caloric densities.
Dietary options
Other dietary options may be as beneficial as controlling carbohydrates—and more palatable, according to Manny Noakes of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Adelaide, Australia. Last year, she and her colleagues investigated the effects of glycemic index on HDLs in 21 men and women with type II diabetes.
The researchers assigned each person to a succession of 4-week diets. In one phase, all the volunteers ate high-carbohydrate, high-GI meals. In another segment, all consumed high-carbohydrate, low-GI foods. In a third phase, they downed a high-fat diet, in which most of the fats were heart-healthy monounsaturates (SN: 11/21/98, p. 328: http://www.sciencenews.org/sn_arc98/11_21_98/Bob1.htm). Any carbohydrates in those meals had high GIs.
As in Frost's study, low-GI meals elevated the volunteers' good HDLs, although the magnitude of that increase was small, just 6 percent. More surprising, the Australian team reported in the June 1999 European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was a comparable HDL elevation when the participants downed high-fat, high-GI meals.
To Noakes, this suggests that the benefits of heart-healthy mono fats may compensate for any detrimental effects of high-GI foods—provided the total share of carbohydrates in the diet is kept relatively low. That could prove important, she points out, since high-fat fare tends to be tastier, making diets including it easier to stick with.
And that, Reaven contends, is his big argument against using glycemic index as a guide to food selection.
He's found that "getting patients to change their diet is very difficult." Most want the high-fat taste without its risks. A relatively simple change—substituting monounsaturates for saturated fats—can achieve that a lot more easily, he argues, than making people look up food choices in GI tables before they sit down to eat.
"There's nothing wrong with [adjusting diets for] glycemic index," he says, except that it's more cumbersome than other options and doesn't deliver the same magnitude of benefit that losing weight or cutting overall consumption of carbohydrates will offer.
Brand-Miller—whose GI tables appear in her popular book The Glucose Revolution (1999, Marlowe & Co.)—argues that this criticism just reflects an "American" bias. Elsewhere, especially in Australia, South Africa, and parts of Europe, she says, the use of GI tables to fashion healthier diets "has been well accepted for more than 10 years." She notes that low-GI diets have been linked to reduced appetite and weight loss, and she expects that many North American holdouts will "come around."
The important thing, she points out, is to realize that as long as a person doesn't binge on high-GI offerings, no food needs to be ruled out of carb-managed diets—"even chocolate."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glycemic index for weight loss?
Studies of glycemic index (GI) were originally intended to help people suffering from an unusually low response to their own insulin, but some researchers now suggest that the diet they recommend for this so-called syndrome X can benefit nearly anyone. In The Glucose Revolution (1999, Marlowe & Co.), Jennie Brand-Miller of the University of Sydney, Australia and her coauthors propose that a low-GI diet can melt off pounds and even boost athletic performance.
Because foods ranking low on the GI scale tend to be rich in fiber, it's difficult to sort out which aspect of diet is more important. The findings of a study published in the Oct. 27, 1999 Journal of the American Medical Association, for example, might be attributed to either factor.
Fiber emerged as the leading dietary constituent linked to weight control in this 10-year study of nearly 3,000 men and women. The more fiber an individual ate, the less likely he or she was to gain weight. Moreover, fiber consumption "had a major [beneficial] effect on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and fibrinogen, which is a measure of the tendency for excessive blood clotting," notes David S. Ludwig of Children's Hospital in Boston, the study's lead author.
Although the glycemic indexes of the foods eaten weren't calculated in this trial, Ludwig says that fiber appears to exert its effects "by lowering levels of the hormone insulin." That's not surprising, he adds, because insulin can program the body to store calories. Indeed, he notes, "one complication of insulin treatment for diabetics can be excessive weight gain."
Ludwig saw similar effects in a study of 12 overweight boys. The teens experienced greater and earlier hunger after a high-GI breakfast and lunch than after a breakfast and lunch of low-GI fare—even though all the meals contained the same number of calories. More importantly, his team reported in the March 1999 online version of Pediatrics, the youths snacked on 81 percent more calories after two high-GI meals of instant oatmeal than after two low-GI meals of vegetable omelets and fruit.
Before giving the keynote address at the meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity last year, Susan B. Roberts of the Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston reviewed the 20 studies that were available on glycemic index and obesity. Though many had design flaws, six looked pretty strong, she says. "And five of those six, including the one I coauthored [with Ludwig, in Pediatrics], showed that low-GI foods reduced hunger," she says.
High-GI foods foster a large increase in insulin within about 30 minutes, she notes. An hour later, however, blood concentrations of this hormone plummet, which the body translates into a feeling "that you're ravenously hungry," she observes.
"So, I have developed a personal rule of thumb," Roberts says. "If you're hungry 2 hours after a meal, you're eating the wrong foods."
Talitha 05-13-2003, 03:04 PM Hola All,
I have had 4 glasses of water and walked 2 miles this morning. I think I am eating OP, but I just started reading the book, so I don't know enough to be sure. Our WOE for the last year has been so similar to this, that it's not really much of a change. I think it will help allot to have a plan to back it, though.
It sounds like many of us are walking for exercise. May I suggest a website? www.workoutmusicvideo.com sells walking tapes with popular music set to a certain MPH. It helps me keep on track and I love them. I used to work for the company that makes them, so I know they are good.
Monet- That's great that you live so close!! I have never shopped at Whole Foods. I am A member of the Life Co-op on Roswell road, and I drive to the Duluth Farmer's Market once a month. I will check both of those first for Agave. I want to try it!! I loved being homeschooled, but we lived in CA and it was much different than GA. I even had a homeschool prom!!! My mother is still homeschooling the youngest 4 kids.
Rosalie-thank you for the info. I think this group is great. Do you guys even realize how awesome you are? I am so excited about finding this!!!
Jackie- I think sending 2 sandwiches is a good idea, and Trav would love it. Besides, he is only 5 lbs more than me and I am terrified that he will lose much faster . My goal is to lose 15-20lb before Hannah's wedding on July 26. We'll see........
Talitha
Talitha 05-13-2003, 03:15 PM Are there directions somewhere on how to get onto the chat tonight?
heartmom 05-13-2003, 04:49 PM Man, I've been in a "funk" the past couple of weeks. Just no energy, and overall feeling just blah. I haven't had a solid week of being 100% OP since Easter. And of course that's why I'm still around the 192-193 mark. I don't know why I can't get motivated again. I've been giving myself talks, but it's just not sinking in. I know I've come a long way- but I still have a ways to go before I'm happy and comfortable in my own skin- or will that day ever happen?! Well, I exercised some this morning, with much procastination. I did my 1 mile tape and did about 15 minutes of Richard Simmons- I couldn't keep up with his dance moves because I never knew what he was going to do next. I feel so flabby. Tired of being this way- but don't have the motivation to get my butt in gear and quit moping about it. I had a nsa strawberry yogurt with a small apple this morning. But for lunch I ate too much- I had 2(!!) egg sandwiches with nsa bacon. Well, I need to quit complaining and get off this computer.
Solly 05-13-2003, 05:55 PM Just checking in before heading home. It's been a very productive day work wise.
So far 96 oz of water. Plus what I drink for dinner and later. Planning on getting my walk and wt lifting in tonite too.
Jane, I'm glad you decided to stay. You can do this. Stay on here for support and you will make it though. Really strive to have 3 OP days and you will see that it gets easier. Take Deb's challenge about trying to have 7 OP days this week. You will see some great results and then you will be motivated to keep going. Hope your neck is better soon. That is so annoying.
Deb, Glad your DD's procedure went well. Sure hope he gets feeling better before he starts the chemo. I hope he doesn't have any problems with it. Good idea mixing up your walk/job today. It is always a good idea to hange or exercise so our muscles don't get lax.
Talitha, I think your goal is attainable. Just stick on plan. I have a short snynopsis on the book (3 pages) is you would like me to email it to you until you can get through the book. Also, www.prettyimpressivestuff.com is a great place to go for info too. Don't get upset, Dh will probably lose quicker than you. It's just a man thing. Is Hannah your sister?
Heartmom, You have come a long way. You need to realize that you can do this and what you really want. Don't quit now. Join in on the challenge this week and you can still have 6 Op days. Show yourself you can do this. We believe in you.
My cupboards are bare, so I'm off to the grocery. May have to go before dinner as there is nothing there to eat for dinner.
Have a great evening. Hoping to make it to chat tonight. Good luck on WIW to everyone who dares.
Jackie
Pancho 05-13-2003, 08:20 PM HELLO ALL:
First of all, I do have to say that I feel bad because I do come on here every single day and READ, READ, READ, but I never really post because with 2 young (5 yrs & 10 mos.) children at home, I don't feel like I could say much to everyone. Plus, I'm not much of an authority, YET. So, the only time I really post is when I have questions of my own, which doesn't make me feel very supportive.
With that being said, I want to first say that I am so glad that I have found this woe/wol. If you remember, I came here from Atkins about 3-4 weeks ago. I started Atkins on February 24th and by the end of April I had gone from 152 to hovering between 139-140. I knew I couldn't eat that way another day, so I bought the SB book and found this site, and decided that this is definately something I could really, really do. I am happy to report that this morning I weighed in at 136. I am actually 6 pounds from goal, but may keep going....YIPPEE!!!
And on to a question.....I was at Wild Oats yesterday and found a gourmet peanut butter cookie by Nana's Cookie Company. It said on the package No refined sugars, no hydrogenated oils, no cholesterol, no added salt, no dairy..... It said that they got the great taste by using the natural sweetness of selected fruit juice and whole grains. The nutrition facts show that there are 9 grams of sugar (so I figured these are natural sugars from the juices). I know that the rule is no more than 3 sugars per serving, so this would be an alright snack if I only ate 1/3 of the cookie, right? Or am I incorrect?
Here are the ingredients (what about the starch)?
Organic Whole Wheat Flour, Unsalted peanuts, Fruit Juice, Whole Grain Dextrins (a natural & unmodified starch)???????, Canola Oil, Peanut Flour, Baking Powder (non-aluminum), Natural Flavorings.
And if anyone thinks they are going to come on here and tell me that I can't have this, they better re-think it because it's really yummy!!!!
I enjoy reading up on everyone, and hope to find some more time this summer, when I am not running around every day, to post on a more personal level.
Take care & God Bless.

agape3737 05-13-2003, 11:42 PM Hello Everybody,
It is a pleasure being back again. It is true that I have been very busy lately. Nevertheless I should've peaked my head in to say hello and to let you know that I was OK. So for neglecting you guys I ask you to forgive me.
I can say that I have been OP while I was away. Mother's day and the day after I was not OP. Today I am back on track.
Debbie I was depressed after reading the article on fructose. I use it everyday. I am thankful that you came across the article and posted it. I believe it was just for me. Thank you for keeping us up on our toes. I did accept the challenge of water and excercise. I was a bit late on the OP for a whole week.
I'll check in tomorrow. It is getting late and I have a motivational cd to listen to before I go to bed. Have a good nite everybody.
Love Ya,
LJunel (slim and healthy)
Ellen 05-13-2003, 11:46 PM DEB: I am sorry I missed Chat....I was shopping, getting a prescription refilled, then came home and crashed with a book. I stayed on plan today...just ate too much of legal stuff. You are welcome to call me and cuss me out though. I need all the help I can get! ;)
TALITHA: Oh, wow...I love your avatar! The Cheat! That is awesome! Don't you love that web page?
Tomorrow I will get on and address everyone. Love you all....
heartmom 05-13-2003, 11:47 PM I forgot about chat- oh,well. I ate too much at supper this evening- it was legal but just entirely too much- so I did my mile tape again to try to make up for it,lol. Hey, at least I'm exercising! The water challenge really isn't a challenge for me since I drink water all day long anyway. My personal challenge is to stay OP and to exercise. So I guess I'm doing okay today.
PANCHO- the cookies sound legal, but watch it- stick to a serving. Which is always easier said than done when it comes to me and sweets-legal or not. Congrats on 136- that's great.
BETH- see, you're doing it- you'll be back in the 170's before you know it- send some of that motivation my way- I'm not that far from you, lol.
JACK-K- We want pictures!
Well, I'm fixing to start getting ready for bed-goodnite.
Teensybean 05-14-2003, 02:20 AM Good evening all-- finally had another nice day. Got one more row planted in the garden....cabbage. Also got some flower seed planted. Had to go to Grandma's and finish digging raspberries too. Hope to get the squash planted tomorrow, and then it is time to mow the grass again, and use the weed eater! I am so used to Ted helping with the yard work, that I feel like I will never get caught up. He really does try to help now, but I don't want him to do anything that might hinder his recovery. He has another Dr. appointment Friday, and then one on the 30th.
My oldest son will be riding this week end at the rodeo. We try and make this one every year because it's close, and my Uncle owns the rodeo stock that is used. Brant rode last week end and took 3rd. He won't be doing this much longer as he just turned 28. He is like one of the oldest around here riding bulls!! We usually load the camper and stay the week end, but that is out of the question this time. So we will drive up for the day, and then go home. My Mom is going with us. I guess if Ted doesn't feel up to it, we will just go without him. Ha ha.
Well, it is late, and I am tired so will hit the hay and talk to everyone tomorrow. Good night!
Debelli 05-14-2003, 09:08 AM Good WEIGH IN WEDNESDAY MORNING:wave:
Got home from taking kids to school, found MICHAEL'S book bag in the back seat, now waiting to see just how long it will take him to call me to have to go back to the school to take it to him:rolleyes:
 My car a/c isn't working!!!! With it being 90 degrees already down here, and summer hasn't even begun, I have to get it fixed. Good thing that ELI is off today AND tomorrow, so I can take it in today, and if need be, can leave it without having to worry about having a car to get the kids to school tomorrow. We'll see what pretty penny THIS is going to cost me now - it's always something:shrug:
Not walking today - taking Wednesday's off - I'm tired anyhow.
Will go up to Broward today after we take the car in, looking forward to my salad at Ole Ole - woke up hungry, so REALLY looking forward to my salad;)
TALITHA, sounds good that you've already embraced this WOE for the past year, or something similar to it. I actually make my own tapes for when I walk, I like techno or dance, it has a good beat and fast pace. I don't actually listen to the words, just the beat:D Thanks for posting the site for others to look at for the tapes. Don't worry if TRAVIS loses more than you - men typically do, even if they don't try anywhere as hard as we do, it's just genetic make-up:shrug: Remember, this isn't a competition, do it for you and your health and however long it takes, so be it, at least you are doing something good for yourself. As for chat, there's always next week-but the CHAT link is at the top of any forum page - you just go in there and find the SB ROOM and usually, we're there on Tuesday nights.
HEART, maybe the funky feeling is because you haven't been OP? I know that when I'm eating off plan I feel the same way, I think we all do. When I'm eating OP and exercising, I feel wonderful in so many ways. On a personal level, when you mentioned "I know I've come a long way- but I still have a ways to go before I'm happy and comfortable in my own skin- or will that day ever happen?! I have come a long way too and to this day, I am not comfortable in my own skin but it's something I have to learn to deal with. What you have going for you is that you are much younger than I am AND you haven't gone up and down drastically with your weight all your life (or at least as many years as I have). My point is, you can do this now, while you are young and when you do get to your goal, you WILL feel comfortable in your skin! Your skin will have the elasticity it should have to bounce back to fit YOU, not like me where it hangs, all stretched out from years of yo-yo weight gaining. Do this now, while you are young, don't wait to do it years down the line like I did, which made my life very unhappy. How I wish I would of done it long ago, you have the chance not to follow in my footsteps.
JACKK, you're doing so well with the water - for some reason it's been hard for me this week. Have you heard from the newlyweds? How's married life treating this thus far?
PANCHO, many of the board members have young children, older children, no children. This is much more than a support board for this WOE, by coming on the board we have formed a group of friends and friends talk just about anything! You don't have to be an authority on SB to join in either. Even after 3 years of being on SB, I'm still learning and surely don't consider myself an authority! So please, if you have the time, do post! You sound like you are doing wonderful on this WOE - CONGRATS! You'll be at your goal soon!! To answer your question about NANA'S COOKIES, I actually do it them once in a while, but only the Sunflower one as it seems to have the least calories, etc. in it. As long as you keep it in moderation, that's fine. I think the reason I didn't get the pb was the fat? I can't remember, but I still to the sunflower one, even though it has a few raisins in it, it's very small and when possible I just ditch them. Only thing I don't like about them, they break easily and they are expensive!
AGAPE, :^: didn't mean to make anyone depressed with the fructose article. I just think when I find something that may be of interest I should post it. You have to use your own judgement when it comes to eating/using certain food items. Remember, everything in moderation!! A little fructose won't hurt - it's when something calls for a large amount and possibly within the portions gives you a large amount as well.
MONET, you're forgiven;) I ate too many legal carbs as well yesterday - it happens. At least it wasn't too many illegal of anything!!!
TEENSY, you make me tired just reading your post!!!! All that planting - I hope you are posting that on the exercise board!! Hope TED'S Dr. appt goes well on Friday - keep us informed. Good luck to DS with the bull, I can't imagine watching my kid doing something like that!!!
Okay, time to hit the shower. Will have to check in later when we get back.
Have a great day!

catchinup 05-14-2003, 09:08 AM I'm just finishing up breakfast and had a ham/cheese omlet with 1 egg, 1 piece of whole wheat toast and 1/2 glass of OJ. Was that all legal? The bread was 100% bromated stoneground whole wheat flour Just actually wondering if the juice was ok? It has no added sugar. Thanks and sorry if this is novice.

Jenn in MN 05-14-2003, 09:33 AM Hi everyone. For WIW I was down about 1 lb. from last week, so slow but steady! :D I'll change my stats after my "official" WI on Saturday.
Still OP, even though I was seriously tempted yesterday afternoon after a stressful day at work. I managed to not cave in, and ate my own snacks.
Sorry about missing chat, but I was hip-deep in my paper for class. I did manage to finish it, though. For a while I was ready to not work on it and come play, but then I'd still be writing now!
Anyhow, I have to get ready for work. It's hard packing for lunch and dinner on school days. I'll see if I can check back later and get some personals done.
ttfn,
Jenn
Enique30 05-14-2003, 09:43 AM Hi I am a new Sugar busters girl and I have gone one week with out any type of (sugars except fruit.) I also have not eaten any white flour products as well. I was wondering if some one could tell me when the daily chats are, as well as some help on when and what to eat. Like what to have for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Such as do I have protein every meal? I bought the two books for sugar busters but I still feel lost. I haven't lost any thing either I have gained a pound! What am I doing wrong? I drink my water and exercise..... any ideas? Thanks, -Erin
Oh and how do we get buddies ? Thanks I am still trying to figure out how to use this site.
Solly 05-14-2003, 09:45 AM Happy WIW. Hope the scale is good to everyone today. Just think how great it's going to be next week with everyone doing the challenge and being OP all week and weekend.
I stayed the same today. That's ok. After al lthe bad eating last week I am happy with it. Now time to get serious and move on down to goal.
Went to the grocery $329.00 worth. I was out of everything and that is with one less mouth to feed. Man! But I was starving. The donuts were calling my name, the cheetos, everything was looking so good. Didn't buy anything bad. Made it home and had a quick hot dog and slaw for dinner.
Tried to walk, but we are watching SIL's dog and he doesn't walk well on a leash. We only got in about 1 1/2 miles. Better than nothing I guess. Was too exhausted to workout. It was after 9:00 by the time we got dinner and the mess cleaned up and the walk in. So I just did 100 crunches and leg lifts in front of the TV. Hopefully I can improve the exercising this week.
Pancho, I'm sure you have just as much to say as anyone else does, so join right in. You have done awesome with losing. Only 6 lbs to goal is wonderful. This is something you can do for life. Hope to hear from you again. Those cookies sound ok to me, but let's let an expert decide.
Agape, it's not too late to joi in the OP challenge, You will just put in 6 days in lieu of 7. Glad you have been doing so good with your eating. Everyone has slip ups now and then. Most important thing is to get right back on track.
Deb, sorry I missed chat. 24 was on and I love that show. Only 1 more to go so I will be on after that. Have fun with Eli today. Shame about the a/c/ But you have to have it. Hope it doesn't cost an arm and leg. No word fromt he newlyweds. Too far away. They didn't get an international phone card. Plus no need to call me.
Teensy, I can't believe your DS rides bulls. That looks so dangerous. I was watching a show last week with all the mishaps with bulls and rodeos. Does he get thrown much? Hope DH is recoverying well. Sounds like you have alot to do with him being out of commission. Take care of yourself.
Heartmom, Deb is right on target with doing this now while you are young. Take it from me, at 50 years young, my skin has no elasticity. Now I'm thin with saggy skin. Not a pretty site. Do it while you are young and pretty.
Cathinup, sounds legal to me. In fact, it made me hungry. Welcome to our board.
Jenn, WTG on passing up the snacks and eating your legal ones. It does get easier. Congrats on the 1 lb loss.
Oh I got in 90 oz of water yesterday. Getting ready to start on todays. I'm 3 for 3 on the days of all the challenges. Yeah Me!
Have a great OP day.

jane8760 05-14-2003, 10:12 AM :(
I am up 2 pounds today. BUT on a lighter note.....I did well OP yesterday. I am determined to do at least 3 whole days OP and see how I do. I have wine each night though so it is hard. I water it down with seltzer to stretch it out. I had a tossed salad last night with the last bit of my homemade chili on top with a little shredded cheese and ranch dressing. It was a bottled dressing but I didn't use much. I am going to make my own with the season packet from Hidden Valley when the bottle is gone. The packet doesn't have any sugar and I use skim milk and light mayo so it should be fine.
Today I have a ham sandwich with 1 SSWW bun, 2 oz. of lean boiled ham (legal?) and 1 slice swiss cheese.
For snacks I have some grapes, an apple and some 1% cottage cheese. I think I will be hungry but I will drink my water.
Which brings me to another question, is adding Crystal Light to my water ok? I know there is no sugar but it has an artificial sweetener in it.
I didn't get out and walk last night because of my neck. I actually left work early because it was so painful it was making me VERY cranky:headache:
It is a little better today. I blasted it last night with heat and drugs and got a good nights sleep so it feels a little better.
I want to do my walk tonight because I promised I would do it 3 times this week. I can still get it in if I do it tonight, tomorrow and Saturday am.
Well, I am off. I hope you all have a better WIW than I did. I am not freakin out about it at least. I knew it would be up. I can only keep trying.
Talk to you later.
Beth2374 05-14-2003, 10:51 AM Well... it's my first WIW back OP and I sure hope each week can be as happy as this one!
I weighed in at 188 this morning. (I didn't have ANY water yesterday, so I'm up one from the 187 I was the other day)
Still, 188 is down 5 pounds!!!
I have a 500 page deposition to type so I'm gonna go... hope everyone has a great WIW and the Metal Monster is kind!
Bye!
Rosalie 05-14-2003, 11:22 AM Good Morning All
Wanted to check in for WIW. I am down two more pounds this week. Yippee. Was 196.5 this morning. I have no time to post anymore right now as I have a dentist's appointment this morning and have to go jump in the shower and fix something to eat. Can't afford to miss lunch because of a frozen mouth. :ink:
Good luck to everyone for WIW. See y'all later.
Marie.
Talitha 05-14-2003, 12:02 PM Good Morning,
I weighed in at a 3 lb loss. I'm excited, bit It also seems to me that the first week on any diet or new WOE you tend to do really well. I got in around 95 oz yesterday, and walked 4 miles. i think I may have cheated for dinne |
