Debelli 04-28-2003, 07:16 AM GOOD MONDAY MORNING EVERYONE!
Will post my usual morning post sometime later, but wanted to make sure I got our
MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY done early in the morning, so here's my contribution for MM, there's 2 of them to read today, I REALLY like the first one in particular:

EVEN WHEN
Even when you have failed before, there is still every possibility of success. Even when one door is closed, another door will open. Even when the situation appears to be hopeless, there is indeed hope. Even when your options and your resources seem to be exhausted, there is still something more you can do.
Why is this so? Because the past does not equal the future. Because you are endlessly adaptable, resourceful and determined to go where you know you must go, to do what you know you must do. Because in this moment, you can move beyond anything at all that may have previously held you back.
Even when defeat appears certain, victory is well within reach. Even when the night is at its darkest, dawn is already on the way.
Never give up, never give in, even when everything before has been a disappointment or a disaster. Because everything ahead can be just as you decide to make it.
-- Ralph Marston
*******************
CALM AND DETERMINED
Does it serve any purpose to get upset? Most of the time it serves no purpose. Most of the time, getting upset about a negative situation only serves to prolong and intensify that situation. Getting upset about something you don't want will usually do nothing to make things better, and will likely make things worse.
Instead of becoming upset, become more determined. Instead of throwing your time and energy away, put them to positive use. When you're upset you can often make foolish and costly mistakes, which will get you even more upset. When, on the other hand, you decide to remain calm and determined, you'll make solid, steady progress.
Getting upset is a choice, and becoming more determined is also a choice. Make the choice that will move you forward. The less time you spend being upset, the more time you make to truly live and grow.
-- Ralph Marston

Debelli 04-28-2003, 07:26 AM THIS WEEKS CHALLENGES!!!
I think we've gotten a bit lax on our on-going challenges so I'm here to re-institute them!
Get back on the exercise board! There were so many of us on there. It was great to see so many getting in the 3 day challenge. Won't you join me once again this week???
The water challenge-I've been REALLY bad with this and need to get back to getting in the minimum of 64 ounces. Who's with me on this one?
Journal, just one day this week and post it on the board. It won't kill you. For those who did so last week, I hope it opened your eyes a bit!
Choose one, two or all three!!!! Anyone game?
Ellen 04-28-2003, 09:24 AM Good Morning! A brand new week! I am determined to be on program and get my exercise in all week!
I think everyone should take a piece of paper, and write in big letters some great trait or talent you have, and tape it to the mirror in your bathroom. Then when you get up in the morning, and stumble in there, you will see it, and it will lift your spirits. If you can't think of something, shame on you! You can put an accomplishment then. Even if it was graduating from high school with honors 25 years ago! Pick something you are proud of, and tape it to the mirror. When you like yourself, and can think positively about yourself, you are more apt to think you are worth the struggle to lose weight. Go for it, my friends! You are all worth it! Be a bunch of losers this week! :)
The weather is gorgeous here. My climbing rose on the front steps is in full bloom, and is gorgeous, and smells divine! I love spring, when the roses start blooming. I feel good about getting them sprayed too! Tom dug a hole for me to plant the last one yesterday, so I need to go stick it in the hole this morning. Then I have to cook dinner for my meeting tonight. In fact, I think I am going to be cooking dinner Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for others. I may insist on dinner out on Thursday!
After last nights debauchery at the Chinese restaurant, I am sucking down the water, and hoping WIW is not a disappointment, but if it is, it will be my own fault. I feel sure it won't be bad! If it is, I can blame it on PMS! I LOVE being a woman!
Can you tell Monet woke up in a good mood? The drugs really help!
Where is everyone?
DEB: I am with you on all three! I think I have been a bit behind on the water too, so it is good to recommit and start thinking about it again.
jane8760 04-28-2003, 10:08 AM We had quite an eventful weekend to say the least. I had a Creative Memories party on Saturday which went quite well (I will get $70.00 worth of free murchandise from the total sales!) and then my DH and I went out to dinner with another couple to celebrate this friends 70th birthday. During dinner he proceeded to have a TIA right in front of us. The matre'd had to call 911 for us. It was unbelievable. Our friend is already home from the hospital thank goodness and he called last night to thank us for being there for him and his wife. He had an MRI and CAT scans done so hopefully they do not find any serious damage.
Ok, I became very discouraged on Friday night when I was at our local health food store doing some shopping. I had bought a couple of WW bagels there a week or so ago and thought I would get them again. When I was at the bakery picking them out I actually READ the ingredients this time. They say 100% WW bagels but alas there is white flour in them. I have found that a lot of recipes that are 100% WW are in fact NOT 100% WW. What is up with that?
Also, what is this about spelt flour? Do you all like it or use it? I want to start baking and I saw a lot of the recipes in the "500 Low Carb Recipes" book call for this. They also call for Almond flour? I have never seen that.
I know I had more questions but I am blanking out now......senior moment:lol:
Monet: We worked in our perennial garden yesterday. Our roses look like they will be great this year. I have a Betty Prior that I am a little worried about though. It did not do as well last year so we really pruned the heck out of it this year. We figured we had nothing to lose. One other bush doesn't look that promising but my favorite miniature pink rose is looking wonderful. I have one bush that only shoots up 2-3 long straight stems of the most beautiful red roses. They are like long stem roses. It is sad that it only does that but let me tell you it is absolutely gorgeous! It felt so good to work in the garden again.
That brings up another question.....I have thyme in my perennial border. It is looking a little dead in the middle right now but I know it usually fills in. But I am wondering if it should be cut back each spring so that it doesn't have so much dead wood in the middle? Anyone know?
Deb: I'm sorry your dad is still in the hospital. I will keep my fingers crossed that he is home soon.
I too had a decadent weekend (and last week too!) I am back on track this week. I am up for your challenges. I always drink my water so that is no problem. I am sending my journal for today and not wait for the "perfect" day to do it. Here is what I am having today....
Breakfast: Carnation Instant SF Breakfast with skim milk
AM Snack: Carrots with light sour cream and ranch seasonings
Lunch: WW Tortillas with cheese and salsa
PM Snack: Orange, Oat Bran Pretzels and cheese
Dinner: Chicken and salad (probably some wine too:o )
As for the exercise...I am going back to Curves tonight and I would also like to get more of my walks in so I am with you on that challenge.
Well, enough about me! I will check in later to see how we are all doing today.
Jenn in MN 04-28-2003, 10:16 AM Good morning everyone,
I forgot to mention that I weigh in every Saturday at the community center. Anyhow, I was down 3.8 lbs. from last Saturday.
In case you missed my question over the weekend, I'll recap. I'd really appreciate any advice you guys have!
I baked two loaves of banana nut bread - one regular, one with SGWW flour and Splenda. The WW one came out okay, but really dense and dry. How can I adapt "normal" recipes for using the sgww flour and keep the moistness? I took out 1 tbsp flour for every cup, and thought about adding more milk to make it more moist, but this was the first time I'd used this recipe, so I didn't want to ruin it. Any suggestions would be wonderful!
Deb, I'll take you up on the three challenges! I take it the exercise 3-day challenge is to exercise 3 days of the week?
Monet, after cooking for everyone, you *deserve* a day off!
Jane, I could be wrong about this (Deb?) but I think that if a certain percentage of the ingredient is WW, then they can list it, even if it's not 100%. I call it cheating. Grrrr.
Have a good one!
Jenn
Today's menu:
Breakfast: oatmeal w/ mixed berries
Snack: 4 oz. red seedless grapes
Lunch: Pot roast (8 oz.) w/ raw baby carrots
Snack: 6 oz. Blue Bunny NSA yogurt, 1 orange
Dinner: Tuna melt on SD bread, broccoli, sm. salad
Dessert: 1 Klondike Bar (NSA Reduced fat)
How's that look???
Zanne 04-28-2003, 10:31 AM How's everyone today?
We've been having really gorgeous weather here the past several days. Needless to say, I've been out enjoying them! Today is supposed to be sunny and over 70F!!!! Looks like we'll have to really slather on the sunscreen. I've been getting a slight burn on my face even when I'm not out for too long.
I'm sore today. I did a lot of yard work yesterday. I accomplished a lot more than I thought I'd do. They only had pansies, some roses and a few perennials at the garden center yesterday. With the wacky weather, I guess they're afraid to get more stuff.
I had a wicked migraine on Saturday and managed to sit thru a seminar. Thank goodness they had a large vat of coffee. I skipped the cookies:) Then my mother treated the family to dinner at Outback. I had a baked potato with all the trimmings. We don't have sweet potatoes on our menu up here. The roast beef was wonderful. Then 7 of us shared 2 desserts. I did manage to get in tons of water as the headache meds make me really thirsty.
I got back on track with eating yesterday, but didn't get in nearly enough water, especially with working outside.
I haven't looked at the board in a few days so here's just a couple replies from what this soggy brain remembers.
DEB--Sorry your dad is still in hospital. I hope they release him soon, but at least you know they're making sure he's ok. I'll try to take your challenges. I really need to get back to the exercise. I've got a lot more yard work to do, so I hope that will count:lol: Water-I have some good days and some not so good. And I almost never journal. That will be the tough one.
MONET and JANE (I think it was Jane:?: ) Thanks for the info about pruning the roses. MONET, I had heard the way you said. That's how I had been doing it. But for some reason, last fall I pruned back way too far. But there is hope. A couple bushes I was sure were dead, have little sprouts on them:D
WELCOME any newbies or anyone returning.
Ok, laundry and gardening time!
Debelli 04-28-2003, 10:49 AM Good Morning Again:wave:
Got in my 4.5 mile snail walk:snail: I wanted to go but my ankles were telling me it was going to be one of those slow-moving walks. Took me an hour and 4 minutes today-that's slow! Doesn't help that I'm bloated (TOM due Thursday) AND that I didn't sleep well, but the important thing is, that I walked.
ALSO, already have half my water consumption in me, and boy, do I feel it! URINATION STATION, HERE I COME!!!
Want to get in a few replies before it gets too late and I don't have any time...
MONET, glad to see you are looking forward to the week ahead and your exercising! Hmmm:chin: I'm gonna have to think about my accomplishment! I like that idea, just have to come up with one I think worthy enough to make myself look in that darned mirror every day;) Sounds like you are definitely in a great mood today and are going to have a great week ahead of you. Thanks for taking on this weeks challenges!
JANE, sounds like you had a too exciting weekend, at least when it comes to the dinner. Okay, it's Monday, and I'm a bit slower than normal, so what's the TIA? No matter what it is, it doesn't sound good, and esp. when celebrating a birthday! What the heck kind of present was that! You have found that you really need to read those labels. Interesting to see what companies can put in foods and get away with saying they are. You have to see the words WHOLE GRAIN or STONE GROUND and even then, you STILL have to read through all the other ingredients. Takes a little more time to get through the stores, but well worth it:D Spelt is great to use, almond flour I don't use. It's actually just finely ground almonds (if you keep grinding you'll get almond butter). Problem with it is it's VERY FATTENING, so do keep that in mind. Okay, with your intended menu today...do you have any clue on your caloric intake? It really doesn't look like enough. Def. not enough fiber either. If this is really all you are eating, it may be a problem my dear:)
JENN, CONGRATS on your loss this week, that's awesome! Keep up the great work! As for the bread you made, you'd definitely have to increase the liquids in there somehow since you used the Splenda. Why don't you post the original recipe and let the board try to give you some pointers. Ummm, did you use real bananas??? Today's menu, same thing I said to JANE, doesn't look like enough. Any ideas on the caloric intake of what you posted? Thanks for taking on the challenges this week!
ZANNE, sounds like the weather up there is finally getting nice for you all! Hey, you do what you can with the challenges. I know, people don't like to have extra "work" when it comes to the journaling, but I truly think it won't kill y'all once in a while to do it. I know, for me, when I don't do it, my eating is terrible!
Well, I gotta hop in the shower and get ready for my yoga class. Will check in later today.
Have a great week!
Debbie

Rosalie 04-28-2003, 11:36 AM Good Morning All
Another beautiful day here. I was up bright and early this morning as I had forgotten to put my yard waste out front last night for pick up this morning. So got off to a good start. Cleaned the bathrooms, read the newspaper, had early breakfast, did the dishes and will be heading out to the grocery store soon, then to the hairdressers and off to badminton this afternoon. So I'll probably be having a late lunch to-day. I made buttermilk spelt pancakes for breakfast and topped them with homemade sf blueberry jam which I made on the weekend.
DEB - I missed posting on the exercise board last week but I will try to remember to do so this week. I usually wait until the end of the week and then post it all for the week but I forgot last week and see that I am too late to post on there now. The other challenges too I will continue with. I do find it beneficial to actually post what I am eating, it does keep me in check. Too bad I didn't continue it all last week. Sorry to hear that your Dad is still in the hospital. Hope he is home soon and that he does well with the chemo.
TEANSYBEAN - Glad to hear that dh is doing well following his surgery. Isn't that a good feeling when your clothes start to fit looser. WTG on the exercising last week and using the stairs instead of the elevator.
JANE - I really don't know why it's allowed to put 100% WW when the item includes white flour. We have to be so vigilant in reading the labels. I've just starting using spelt flour. I used it for my pancakes this morning and they tasted good - they didn't really taste any different than when I make them with sgww. If you do buy spelt though look for the whole grain. I'm not sure if the one I bought was stone ground but they did have two kinds, the refined and the whole grain. I've never used Almond Flour. Your menu for to-day looks good to me.
JEN - What kind of sgww flour did you use for your banana bread? Did you use the hard or the soft (pastry) flour. The type of flour would make a difference in the texture. I haven't baked using splenda so don't know if this would effect the texture. Maybe our expert cook MONET will have an answer for you.
ZANNE - I'm surprised you can even drink coffee when you have a migraine. Whenever I have even a hint of a headache I am unable to drink coffee, even the thought of it makes the headache worse. I was planning on getting my patch of garden ready for planting this weekend but I was advised by a couple of people to hold off planting for a while as the soil is still too cold. So I am happy to leave that for another week or two as I have do some digging and add some more soil. But before I do that I have to find a wheelbarrow or some kind of wagon to lug the bags of soil to the front. I think I will have to hit a few garage sales to see what I can find.
Have to go. Will finish reading posts when I get back.
Marie.
Fillise 04-28-2003, 11:50 AM I'm down a pound this morning--a nice way to start the week!
It is GORGEOUS here this morning! I have a sweet kitten purring in my arms--all's right with the world!
Marie--those buttermilk-spely pancakes sound good! I'm thinking about using spetl in the bread machine--have you ever tried it?
Deb--sounds like you are off and running for the week!
Zanne--No sweet taters are Outback? The Horrors! Around here they will put steamed veggies on the plate instead of a potato is you ask.
Jenn in MN--Congrats on the 3.8 lbs! Sounds like you are off to a good start!
Jane--what a weekend you had--goodness. I'm glad your friend seems to be OK now. I bet the party was fun. I love scrapbooking and get together with a group of women twice a month at the church to work.
Monet--Tell me about them pills you are taking again? I'm glad to see you in such a good mood. This weather always lifts my spirits--I hope you have a great day!
Belle and I have much work to do this morning. I hope everyone has a great OP day and an even better week!
Susan

Ellen 04-28-2003, 11:53 AM JENN: I would reduce the amount of flour another tablespoon per cup. I think I would also up the fats in the recipe a bit too. If it calls for butter, I may even substiture peanut oil. Oil tends to keep baked goods more moist. SGWW pastry flour will give you a better baked product like cookies, or muffins, and probably would work better in quick breads. I use Wheat Montana while whole wheat for everything now, and it does very well. I do think the brand of flour has an effect on the finished product. Other ways to combat dryness, if you are not keen on adding more oil would be to add an extra egg. If you would like, email me the recipe (Monet_320@yahoo.com) and I will look at it and see if I can come up with other adjustments.
ROSALIE: Forgot to thank you for the email with the jam recipes! Great page! Thank you! My bushes are going to be loaded this year! woo hoo!
Pancho 04-28-2003, 11:53 AM I finally received my book in the mail and read it from cover to cover. Although it was interesting reading, I feel I have learned more from this board and research than I did from the actual book.
Anyway, I don't recall reading anywhere about the 2-3 starchy carb-a-day allotment. And, does your starchy carb consist of anything other than protein, veggies & fruit (i.e; bread, cereals, wheat crackers.....).
I also read to keep your sugars below 5 grams per serving (which seems high). I have read here that it should not exceed 3 grams per serving.
I bought some bread by Pepperidge Farm - Natural Whole Grain - 9 grain. It has 3 grams fiber per seving and 2 grams of sugar (which fall under the guidelines, right)? Well the ingredients are Unbromated stone ground 100% whole wheat flour, water, rye meal, wheat gluten, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, crushed wheat, RAISIN JUICE CONCENTRATE, oats, UNSULPHURED MOLASSES, soybean oil, yeast, HONEY, salt rye flakes, barley..........
Aren't there too many no-no's in here to eat even though it falls under the 2 grams of sugar allotment.
ALSO....I did buy the Sugar Busters pocket grocery shopping guide. WHAT A HUGE HELP THIS IS GOING TO BE. I would recommend it to anyone new to the program. It has a listing for most all food groups with pages of allowed foods, and then at the end of each food group there is a box of foods that are FORBIDDEN. It is a great little reference that I will take to the store with me when I do my shopping until I learn the basics.
I hope this Monday morning finds you all well. I look forward to getting to know you all a little better in the coming weeks/months.
Thanks in advance for the information. You've all been great so far!!!!
Jenn in MN 04-28-2003, 12:23 PM I use Arrowhead Mills SGWW flour. It says you can sub 1 for 1 on regular flour, but I've found it's not true, because it's so much thicker texture.
I did use real bananas for the bread, as Dan hadn't eaten many last week and they were ready to hit the trash. I grabbed the Betty Crocker cookbook we got for a wedding present, and decided to give the Banana Bread a try. I didn't think bananas were bad, are they? It was 12 slices for the bread, or 1/4 banana in each serving.
Deb, let's see... I'm still using weight watchers points because that's easier for me. Here's the breakdown:
1 c. Oatmeal (not instant) w/ 1/2 c. berries: 3
1/2 c. skim milk: 1
Eggs: 4 (2 each)
Yogurt: 3
Tuna: 5
Grapes: 1
SD Bread: 3
Salad dressing: 1
Pot Roast: 6
Orange: 1
Cheese: 3
Klondike bar: 3
Total= 34 x 50 calories/pt. = approx. 1700 calories
Do you think that is too much, too little or about right?
According to my "range", I'm supposed to eat between 1200-1450 cals. a day. I can cut the dessert if I'm over on the calories. The starchy carbs are at breakfast and dinner (oatmeal and SD bread).
Marie , Splenda isn't as "thick" as sugar, so if the recipe is using it for volume, I know it doesn't work as well. I need to go back over to their website and re-read the tips and tricks. It seemed to work with the bread, though.
Back to work for now,
Jenn
jane8760 04-28-2003, 12:38 PM You are right Deb....as I read your reply to my food intake for today I realized my stomach was growling! It is not enough food. I am planning on trying to get the time to site down today and do my menu for the week. I created a form in Excel where I can put each meal and it will calculate how many calories. I need to get this done!
I am walking up to the local deli with a friend from work at lunch. I may buy some turkey so that I can have more food and it will at least be a protein. I will get some cheese too but I have been trying to limit my cheese intake a little because it is causing some problems....if you know what I mean:(
I didn't count the total calories for today but it is definitely not enough food. I can't get used to that....I am so used to starving myself.
Thanks for the info on the Almond flour. I guess that is out! The last thing I need is something high in fat. I will get the spelt flour because I am finding that the WW flour is just to heavy for most baking recipes.
p.s. a TIA is a small stroke. Trans Ischemic Attack.
Pancho: I agree. I have learned more on this board than I did from reading the book. Stay with them...these gals know what they are talking about and are always here to help.
Jenn: as I mentioned to Deb above, I think the WW flour is too heavy for baking. I think Monet is right....use the WW pastry. I am going to try the spelt flour too.
ALL: what kind of oatmeal are you using? I need another option for breakfast and that sound good with the fruit. Hopefully it is instant because I don't have much time in the morning.:D
Also, some of you are having sour dough bread. Is this allowed? Do they make WW Sour Dough?
I am still trying to get my hands on some Agave. Anyone know where I can order this?
Debelli 04-28-2003, 03:20 PM Hey All:wave:
Home for just a few minutes. Had my yoga class today - still loving it and now I'll be able to love it twice a week! She's doing another class on Friday from 1pm-2:30pm starting next week. It's perfect as ELI never has a Friday off so I don't have to worry about missing it due to spending the day with him AND the kids get out of school then, and it's less than a half mile away from their school on the same street! I printed out a MM from Ralphies site and took it in to yoga class - they loved it. One lady told me it brought tears to her eyes! Whoa, didn't expect that!
FYI, I don't know if I've ever posted this before, and if I did, I'm doing it again...If you want to try a (what I think) great salad dressing and can find CINDY'S KITCHEN brand in your area, there's a ROSEMARY AND ROASTED GARLIC VINAIGRETTE that I really love and do recommend. It's in the refridgerated section in both my WILD OATS & WHOLE FOODS. I found it the first time when I visited HARRY'S in Atlanta when I met up with MONET and I've been buying it ever since. I thought about it as I just used the last drop:( Time to get a new bottle! Oh, it's a bit expensive, for a salad dressing, but I only use a TBL so it lasts me a long time, and besides, I enjoy it AND I'm worth it!;)
After class I went and got a few books from the shelves so will be skimming those later today for any worthwhile info. Got a new book that I had ordered off Ebay today, one I had never heard/seen of before-looks like some good recipes in this book. I'll definitely be busy reading. Also got a few movies as well, one is THE WEDDING PLANNER, haven't seen that one before. The other ones are older and ones I haven't heard of before.
Want to get in a few replies before I go to p/u the kids from school...
ROSALIE, sounds like you have a lot to post on the exercise board today between all the cleaning AND badminton! Those buttermilk pancakes sound delish! I actually like pancakes but I can't remember the last time I made some-lonngggg time ago. Sorry I locked the weekly exercise board before you could post - did it to myself as well! I agree, journaling keeps me in line!!!! Sure doesn't hurt to do it!
FILLISE, definitely a great way to start a new week! CONGRATS! That's how many since Lent started?
PANCHO, glad to see you got the book. The shoppers guide will be useful in the beginning esp. I'm glad this site as well as others that you've found has been useful. Don't hesitate to ask questions as you have them, there are always lots of them to be asked. I do not have the newest version of SB, wasn't about to give these guys another dime of my money, so I'll try to help answer your questions best I can...Regarding starchy carbs. In the old book in the FAQ's in the back there is a question listed Q: How much of an allowed bread can I eat? A: Two slices daily if you wish to lose weight. Three slices maximum on a maintenance program. A starchy carb is approx. 80 calories and 15 grams of carbs, which is about what bread is. This has been adopted for all starchy carbs. I'm not sure in the book if it says it anywhere else without going through it. A starchy carb is rice, pasta, bread, sweet potato, beans, peas, etc. I posted last week some starchy carbs as there was a question about peas being so-which they are. In the old book, it was 3 grams. The new book says 5 but never said WHY there was an increase. My opinion, 5 is way too high! Personally, if I saw what was listed in the bread, even though it falls under the 3 gram rule, I wouldn't buy it. That's just my opinion as I can get quite anal with things at times;) One rule if there's something among the first 5 ingredients that are listed that are a no-no, best to stay clear of it. If you can find MONTIGNAC'S book EAT YOURSELF SLIM at the library, try to get it and read it, it explains things a lot better and is where SB came from! Hope this helps!
JENN, there's factors that make using flour different in many applications. Humidity plays a part, type of flour, other things can too. When you see a bread recipe it may say 5-6 cups flour, that's because of the different factors that may come in to play and you may not be able to be exact. MONET knows her stuff and I'd try what she recommends. Your menu-sorry I don't remember everyone's numbers, but I can tell you girl, I'm suppose to be eating 1450 calories! How could you be the same, or less? :?: Can you tell me how many grapes you actually eat, in ounces? How many ounces is that orange? The piece of cheese? How much oatmeal? Was that a cup before or after cooking? What amount if before cooking did you use? What I'd really like to see are hard numbers, that can make all the difference in the world!!!
JANE, one of the biggest problems for people is as simple as not eating enough and something that can be easily fixed. Feel free to e-mail me your excel spreadsheet, would love to see it AND analyze it for you! Thanks for claryifing what TIA is. I thought it was something so obvious, so now I don't feel so stupid! You want to make sure you use ROLLED OATS and NOT INSTANT! QUAKER OATS is probably the one used most often since it's easiest to find. You can actually make it the night before and have it ready in the morning by making it in a thermos. If you need directions, let me know! SD bread is legal but DO remember to look for the ingredients to make sure there's not a bunch of junk. RUDY'S makes a great SD bread AND yes, they do make a WW SD bread that I found on my last trip to TJ'S! Recipes can be found if you want to try your hand at making your own-I just haven't figured out all this "starter" stuff, but I have many recipes for SD bread!
Time to hit the potty and hop back in my car! I've driven almost 200 miles since yesterday-it never ends!!!!
Later!!!

TVthatsME 04-28-2003, 03:24 PM Hi all,
Got lost over the weekend and didn't get to check in.
Not much time now either, but wanted to say HELLO :)
Deb - I'm with you on the water challenge and the exercise too. I've got to get my hiney in gear and start exercising again.
gotta run,
Teresa
Jenn in MN 04-28-2003, 03:50 PM Quick before I have a meeting...
Jane, thanks for seconding the WW pastry flour. It's on my shopping list. Let me know how you like the spelt. :D
Deb, I will get you all the pertinent info when I get home to my scale, but the grapes are 4 oz, the oatmeal 1 c. before cooking, and the orange is "large" after peeling.
I don't know what to tell you, except that's weight watcher's calorie range based on their points. I may have to throw that range out the window!
Teresa, good to see you "bounce" in and out again!
ttfn,
Jenn
Solly 04-28-2003, 03:52 PM Good Monday afternoon.
Didn't think I would ever get on here. I like to start my day out with the board, but here it is almost 3:00. I have been working on the weddign program ALL morning. (good thing I don't have a ton of work to do). I just can't stand having it hang over my head. Got to get things done.
The bachlorette party was a bust. We played a couple of games that were cute and riskka (sp) but after that it was dull. Youngest DD and I were home sober by midnight.
I had planned to eat whatever I wanted. I did have 3 strawberry dacquiris and a few nacho chips, but that was about it. Like Deb said, a planned cheat that wasn't hardly worth it.
I made myself go right back on track Sunday. Was tempted to eat some potato chips, but gave myself a stern talking to and left them alone.
Gonna be tough getting the exercise in this week and next, but will try hard.
Just skimmed the posts from the weekend and today so fogive me if I missed someone.
Deb, Boy you were reading my mind today. I really needed the MM on getting upset. I'm bouncing off walls this weekend and today. So I really needed to read that. I'm up for all three challenges. Don't know how much exercise I can get inthis week or next though. I'm gonna try. Neat that you can do the Yoga 2x a week if you want. Sorry your DD is still in the hospital. Hope they release him soon. Good job jumping rioght back op. That is the whole secret.
Monet, loved your MM idea. You deserve a night free of cooking after all of that.
Jane, how scarry about your friend. Hope he is ok now. You really have to read, read, read ingredients. False advertising. Instant oatmeal is not legal.
Jenn, Congrats on your 3.8 loss. That is awesome.
Zanne, next time you go to Outback, try their mixed veggies. They are awesome.
Rosalie, wow, you have accomplished a lot already for the day.
Susan, congrats on the pound. Great way to start the week. glad you survived the retreat. And did such a good job with your food.
Tennsy, glad DH is going good. Wow how exciting with the clothes getting bigger. Much better feeling than the scale.
Overcome, welcome back. This is the best place to come back to.
Grin, sorry to hear about your uncle. But nice that you could all be there.
BKM, glad you have discovered the wonderful person inside of you.
Bob, Yes, I'm not too far from the chow wagons.
I really need to do some actual work here today so I better get busy.
Have a great day.
Jackie

Ellen 04-28-2003, 04:16 PM Dropping in for a sec...just to see what's happenin'! I finally planted my last rose. Its embarrassing to think I took three weeks to get it in the ground when it took me less than five minutes to do! Of course, the fact that Tom dug the hole helped. ;)
I need to get working on my schedule for my meeting tonight. I want to make sure we accomplish some stuff tonight, and not just coast through it with nothing to show for it. I started reading a book on theater, and am finding it fascinating. Had my appointment on the phone with the pastor. I feel like I have my ducks in a row now...
I hope I can get back on later.... until then...
sheanne 04-28-2003, 04:28 PM Good Afternoon everyone,
Deb: I am sorry to hear that your Dad is still in the hospital and that he will have to have chemo. He is definitely in my prayers. I am joining in on the challenge. I got on the scale today and I am up to 270.5 again. I am going to exercise 5 days a week (my nutritionist wants me to do that), drink my 64 oz of water and journal everyday (once to put on the board). I made new goals and a contract with myself and put it in my new journal. There are some things I want to ask though. I may be having too many starchy carbs. This morning I had my serving of oatmeal. Now that is considered 1 starchy carb? So I should at most have one more during the day right? What are Lima beans considered? (Sorry, I just read your post about beans being starchy).
Monet: Glad that you are feeling good today. I know what you mean about recommitting. I have been really lax and depressed about everything lately and what do I do when I feel that way. I eat. Hence being up on the scales this morning.
Jane: Sorry that your friend had a stroke, but glad that he is back home and doing ok. Hopefully there was no permanent damage. Yours and Monets roses sound so lovely. I love the smell. I was going to plant some flowers and fix up our yard a bit, but too much is going on right now and I don't have the time. Maybe next year when my Mom is not laid up with her leg, we can put some flowers in.
Jenn: Congrats on your 3.8 lb loss.
Zanne: We have been having great weather here too. It's supposed to be 70 here today also. Think I'll go out in the back yard after I get some stuff done in the house.
Rosalie: Your spelt pancakes and homemade sf blueberry jam sound really good. I had oatmeal this morning and thought I'd try raspberries on it. Not a good idea, they were too sour. Good thing I only put a tiny amount on to taste it first.
Fillise: Great start to the week to be down a pound.
Pancho: Glad to see that you received your SB book and have read it all. It does give you a lot of information, but like you, I feel that I get a lot more info here. Reading the book does help though. That little shopping guide helped me quite a bit at first too.
Jack-K: Soon the wedding will be here and then you will be able to relax. It sounds like you were very good not eating those chips. I probably would not have been able to pass them up. I love chips and cannot have them in the house at all.
Well, I better go and get some things done and now that I am taking up the challenges I need to go get started on drinking all that water.
Later,
Sheanne
heartmom 04-28-2003, 06:41 PM Just checking in- my eating has been okay the past 2 days BUT Saturday was awful- won't go in to detail, but I'm back at 193.5. So still up 1 pound from my low. Anyway, earilier today I was showing a friend of mine pics of me a few years ago and she couldn't believe it was me- she said I look nothing like I did before and it was hard to imagine me being that big. So that was my motivation for the day:) Breakfast- I made a strawberry smoothie(8 frozen strawberries, 3 pk Splenda, 9 oz. skim milk) Lunch- big chef salad(ham, tomatoes, 1 egg, cucumbers, romaine lettuce, too much cheese and dressing, though). I'm a little hungry so I'm going to grab some fruit or peanut butter for a snack. Supper will be grilled chicken, baby limas, and probably some squash and onions fried in a little olive oil. Well, I got to go and get ready for Ashley's play at school this evening.
Well I'm afraid I'm doing a very good job of checking in as I would like, but things just don't seem to settle down much around here these days. Things are ok with me. Still battling the same few lbs back & forth, although I am holding it down closer to 140 now than I was there for a while.
DS which I have spoke of before here who lost her son last year is in the hospital. Had to have blood transfusion today. She kept passing out so her dh brought her in this morning & they found she had a hct of 19! we transfuse patients when they're lower than 30. They have given her 4 units today & scheduled her for a hysterectomy tomorrow. Would love to be there with her, but I'm on for a 12 hr shift & cannot get a replacement. She understands, but still....
Anyway... wanted to pop in & say hi. Still going to pysical therapy for the shoulder. Hope everyone here on the board are doing ok. Sorry I haven't read the posts, so I can't reply to anything today. Bye!
Rosalie 04-28-2003, 09:13 PM Hi
JENN - I forgot to congratulate you for your loss this week. WTG. Ripe bananas have a high gi so should be avoided. If they are a little green then they are o.k. to eat occasionally. But I know you wouldn't be using green ones in the banana bread.
SUSAN - It sounds like your week is starting off well. I don't own a bread machine but I think spelt should work just as well as sgww. I think it is higher in protein than wheat so should have more gluten which would make it good for bread.
MONET - I made some blueberry sf jam on the weekend (you can see that I had an exciting weekend ;) ). I found some No Sugar Needed Fruit Pectin and followed the recipe inside the package. The only change I made was to substitute 1/2 cup of the juice called for with 1/2 cup agave. It tasted great on my pancakes this morning. If I make it again though I may try using pineapple juice in place of the apple juice to give it a little more tang as I don't want to use artificial sweetener. I know pineapple is a :nono: but the juice is a lower gi than the fruit so maybe it would be o.k. to use. What do you think?
JANE - I buy regular oatmeal. It only takes 2 - 2 1/2 minutes ito cook in the microwave. The instant is not recommended as it has a higher gi than the regular one. I also sometimes buy the steel-cut which I believe has the lowest gi as it is less processed but this does take a little longer to cook. When I made it yesterday (the steel-cut) I had measured out a serving and added some milk and left it to soak in the fridge overnight and it cooked in a couple of minutes in the morning.
DEB - Glad you are enjoying your yoga class.
JACK-K - Too bad the party wasn't too exciting. But at least you did o.k. with your eating.
HEARTMOM - That was a nice compliment from your friend. You sure did look great in the picture you posted.
MARY - Sounds like your life is as hectic as ever but it is good to see you posting. Sorry to hear that your sister is sick. Hope she does well with the surgery. Hope your shoulder is improving.
Whenever I go to the hairdressers I always look through the magazines for recipes. I found one to-day for Cream of Broccoli soup made with 2% milk instead of cream. I made it for dinner tonight and it was delicious. Well I have to get into the kitchen and do the dinner dishes and then go and veg in front of the t.v. or maybe do some reading if there is nothing worthwhile watching.
Here is what I ate to-day.
3 pancakes (made with 1 egg, 1/2c buttermilk, 1/2c spelt flour)
3 tbs sf blueberry jam
Coffee x 2
1 medium orange
1 pear - 6 oz.
1 oz cheese
Small red seedless grapes - about 2 doz.
2 scrambled eggs
Iced tea with lemon x 2
1 1/2 c cream of broccoli soup (made with 2% milk)
2 Salmon and Sweet Potato patties
1 c green beans
1 c 2% milk with 1 tbs Ovaltine. (Haven't had this yet but will before bedtime.)
Haven't figured out the calories but may try putting it into Fit-Day later. I know I ate too many grapes to-day but I just can't keep my hand away from them. Every time I open the fridge door I'm tempted to grab a few. Sometimes I even cover them with a paper towel so I don't see them when I'm looking in the fridge. Absolutely no will-power with some things. But at least I think it is better than getting in the chip bag. :o:
Bye for now.
Marie.
P.S. I just went in to Fit-Day and my calories for the day come to about 1650.
Pancho 04-28-2003, 09:15 PM Debelli: I am so new to this, that I'm starting to confuse myself, probably unnecessarily. You stated that you listed some starchy carbs last week, but from what I found (and this may not be what you are referring to), these are supposed to be non-starchy carbs that you listed, and peas are included in this list. The sentence starts with, "First, let's start with what is NOT a non-starchy vegetable." Anything that is more than 5 grams for one portion (FIVE GRAMS OF WHAT?...). If these are non-starchy vegetable then are they not allowed at all, or are they referred to as something else? I know that beets, corn and some other things that are not allowed were in that list. I am sorry if I am making this more confusing. I would just like to find a list that I can reference with what is considered a starchy carb, so I know to stay within my 2-limit per day.
Thanks again for any info. I am going to get this figured out soon!
Also, where can I find legal pita bread? I found some whole wheat ones at Wild Oats today, but they also had enriched flour in them. Also, all of the Lindt chocolate that I have found is loaded with sugar.
Thanks everyone!!!
Teensybean 04-28-2003, 10:37 PM Good evening all--- Had to spend another day in town again. I am so tired of driving!! Started to plant my onion sets this morning, but that is all I got done. Weather forecast is for rain tomorrow, so doubt if I will get anything planted then. DARN!!
Today was my 15th day of using the TBT. (I use it every other day, during the week, so I have used it 15 times.) Hope that wasn't too confusing.....anyway, this is the half way mark of the challenge when I bought it. I have lost a total of 4 inches since using it. Haven't lost any weight, but have definitely lost inches. I will measure again in 15 more days. (I am changing the routines so that I can use it every week day. I will do upper body MWF one week, and lower body T Th, and then switch the next week.) This machine is awesome!!
I need help ladies.... I still seem to be way over on my fat. I like seeing what you all are eating. It seems to help. I think that alot of my problem is that I did PP for so long, that I am actually afraid of eating too many carbs, so my fat seems very high. What are good carbs that I can add? I eat a whole lot of fresh veggies...ie.. green onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and cooked ones SPAGHETTI SQUASH, cauliflower, broccoli. But I can only eat so many of these, and they do not add much for calories or carbs.
Here is todays eating.
B--2 scrambled eggs with 2 tbl salsa, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup Fiber One, 1/4 cup 1% 2 cups decafe.
S--3.1 oz Apple
L--1 WW Pita Bread (After seeing Deb's post I realize it should have been 1/2 bread.) 3 oz taco meat, 2 oz shredded lettuce, 2 oz chopped tomatoes, 1 boiled egg, 4 oz cabbage salad (cabbage, green pepper, green onion, tomato with a mayo dressing.)
S-- Orange (medium to small when peeled)
D-- 5 oz cube steak (floured with WW flour, and sprayed with Pam to fry) Dinner salad with Red Wine Vinegar, (2 cups Romaine, .5 oz green onion, 1 oz cucumber, 1.5 oz grape tomatoes) 1/2 cup Spaghetti squash. 1/2 Tbl butter, lite salt and pepper. SF Jell-o.
I wonder if this is too much? I will finish entering it in fit day and give the calories and other info.
Monet--I have to hand it to you.... you always sound so chipper!! You must get up very early every morning. (Oops, forgot the different time zones.) My poor roses haven't hardly started to sprout this year yet. Did plant my onion sets this morning before having to run into town again for another prescription for dh.
Deb-- I am up for all three challenges this week. Sorry I haven't had time to go back and read all the posts from when I was gone, so am not sure what is going on with your father now. Hope that it is not too terrible. Prayer's for you and your family.
Zanne-- I am sooo jealous of your time outside. I spent 1 1/2 hours yesterday mowing....and then got out first thing this morning to plant onion sets, then got a call to go pick up a new med for dh. So....my day was spent driving to town and back. Hope the migraine is better.
Rosalie-- You are just a busy little bee this morning. The sun was shining this morning....so the heck with my housework!! I still have beds to get ready for flowers. The weather here just won't cooperate!!
Jack k--Sounds like you will be very busy for a couple of weeks. Sorry your planned cheat was so blah!! But glad you had fun anyway. Good for you, getting right back on track.
I also can't remember about the sugars in dairy products..... cottage cheeses, and yoghurts, for example.... Is the Blue Bunny Lite 85 yoghurt SB legal?? Can the sugar grams be more than 3 for these products?
Hope everyone has a great night, and see you in the morning. If I missed anyone I apologize, will make it up.
Ellen 04-28-2003, 11:45 PM Just got in from my meeting. I was naughty. I ate a small portion of mashed potatoes and a brownie. I had too many starches as well. Not a good day! :(
Here is todays menu:
B: 1 cup (1/2 cup dry) Oatmeal with 1/2 cup blueberries
S: 1/2 ww matzo with 1 T pb
L: Shelton Chicken pot pie
S: celery and carrots with 2 T bleu cheese dressing for dip
D: 4 oz cube steak, lightly floured and fried with onions in olive oil, less than 1/2 cup mashed potatoes  Yes, they are a :nono: , 1 cup broccoli, and another :nono: - 1 chocolate brownie
78 oz of water
ROSALIE: I don't think you should use pineapple juice in your jam. Pineapple has an odd enzyme in it that will keep gelatin from thickening, so it is not supposed to be used in jello. I would be afraid it might do the same thing to the pectin. Add a bit of lemon juice if you want it tangy.
TEENSY: You go, girl! You rock with that TBT! I am glad you got your onions in. I have never grown them, and maybe I should! The best onions in the world are sweet Vidalias, from a bit south of here! :) Hope your hubby is doing well!
SHEANNE: I think for those of us with medical problems that inhibit weight loss, we really need to focus more on the healthy eating and not the scale. Once we can do this for US, and our health, it gets easier. That is the only way I have survived the five years I have been dieting with little results! :)
JACK: I had a good chuckle about the dull bachelorette party. You must be made of sterner stuff than me! If I get even slightly tipsy, I feel like crap the next day! My meds don't allow me to drink at all, and I don't mind!
JENN: See if you can find Wheat Montana brand whole wheat flour. They have a web site, and you can check for a store near you that carries it. It really does make a difference in my baked goods. I make all our bread, and I won't use anything but! I started using it in everything and it works wonderfully! The white whole wheat, called Prairie Gold, works almost like white flour!
DEB: Thanks for the heads up on the Rosemary and Garlic dressing. I remember your saying it was wonderful, but I had forgotten which one you had gotten. Next time I head over to Harry's I am going to look for it. Hope your dad is doing ok. Any word on when he will be able to come home?
TV: Hi! Good to see you!
FILLISE: Did you enjoy the gorgeous day? The meeting tonight drove me nuts! We were trying to come up with a mission statement, and they kept changing their minds and getting all nit picky over the words. I wanted to knock some heads together! :) Do you ever feel that way with church stuff? :)
JANE: I use old fashioned oats. You could bring it to a boil, turn it off, then go do your morning routine... and it would be ready to eat when you were ready!
COUNTRY: Where are you?
By the way, I saw Gracious had posted on the low carb board...so I guess she is doing ok. I left her a note, and will see if she responds.
Night all! gotta hit the hay
Teensybean 04-29-2003, 01:37 AM Okay, here is the fit day totals for today's menu.
Total: Calories 1400
Fat: 68 614 46%
Sat: 18 158 12%
Poly: 5 41 3%
Mono: 15 136 10%
Carbs: 140 431 32%
Fiber: 32 0 0%
Protein: 75 299 22%
Alcohol: 0 0 0%
Actually, this is one of the lower fat days! Although my calories are low again. Sorry Deb...I really do try. What are some suggestions or sample menu's that might help me. I need to get my calories up to around 1800 to 1900. I NEED HELP!! I want this to work so bad, but I just don't know what to add to my meats and veggies. What do you all eat with your meat? Are there some higher carb vegetables that I could add, or do I need to learn different ways to cook them that would increase the counts? If you look at my menu, doesn't it seem like I am eating alot??
Monet--I love that little work out machine. Worth it's weight in gold. The brownie sounds yummy.... even if it is a no no. That is usually what I make for dh on his birthday instead of cake. That will be coming up the end of May.
Sweet dreams everyone!!
sheanne 04-29-2003, 02:02 AM Evening everyone,
Thought I'd check in and let you all know what I ate today and to catch up on the posts.
Melf: Sorry to hear about your DS. I know exactly what she is going through. The same thing happened to me. I could not respond to anyone. I could hear my husband calling my name but couldn't respond to him. I had to have 6 bags of blood at the hospital. It was horrible. It took a year of having monthly iron shots, some more transfusions and testing and then I too had a hysterectomy. I have NEVER REGRETTED having it. She is in my prayers.
Colleen: Glad that you like your machine. I have been looking for a treadmill so that on rainy or cold days here I can still walk. Haven't found one yet though.
Monet: You mentioned that you make all your own bread. Do you have a recipe on the recipe board? I tried one ww bread recipe. It was ok, but very heavy.
Heartmom: It's really great when a friend you haven't seen in a while notices that you have lost so much weight. Keep up the good work. Hope you enjoyed Ashley's play.
Here's what I had for today:
Breakfast: 1 cup cooked oatmeal w/spenda
small apple
Lunch: 3 oz tuna w/mustard and 6 triscuits
small orange
Snack: Peanuts
Dinner: Pork Chop
Green Beans and Cauliflower (steamed)
Snack: Grapefruit
Water: 64 oz
Exercise: 1/2 mile, 10 minutes
Everyone have a great day tomorrow.
Sheanne
The Quilter 04-29-2003, 09:34 AM Tuesday Morning Quickie!
Hello everyone! I just wanted to get on here and wish everyone a great Tuesday. I tried yesterday, but had time only to post my exercise. I worked the PBS station's action auction last night. So I was down there until nearly 10. Came home and tried to crash, but was so keyed up because of all the fun at the auction. It's funny to come home and turn on the tv set and see right where you just spent a few hours.
Anyways, eating is good. I was up a little bit on the scale yesterday, so am keeping my fingers crossed that tomorrow's weight will be back to my new low. Going to pump in the water today like crazy.
I hope you all are well. I hate that I haven't had time to read. Will check in later and hopefully get on chat tonight.
Take care to all my favorite busters of sugar. DEB, I think I'm having lunch with Janice this week if we can find a non-rainy day to sit outside and enjoy the springtime.
Kim
jane8760 04-29-2003, 09:39 AM 1. I used to have a Pria bar for a snack. I know that those are not allowed but I really miss them. Does anyone know a good low carb bar that I can have?
2. What would you consider the calories in 2 - 2 1/2 cups of tossed salad with lettuce, tomato, cukes and some carrot? (only a small amount of tomato, 3 slices of cuke and I shave the carrot)
3. Is the "white" WW flour legal? It says it has the same nutritional info as the regular WW.
Now for the chit chat.......
I did not go to Curves last night. I decided I enjoy doing my 2 mile walk much more so I think I may bag Curves. I kind of feel like a quitter but I was draggin my @$$ there and I don't think that was doing any good. I love being outside and just go for my walk on MY TIME.
I was well behaved in the eating area yesterday and it looks like another good day is ahead of me. I have a tossed salad with turkey, ham and Alpine Lace Swiss in it today with a light ranch dressing. Unfortunately it is bottled ranch. I haven't had time or the ingredients to make it homemade, but plan to next week.
Other than that I am carb free until dinner...if even that today. I am planning on pork chops for dinner. I don't know what to have with them since I am not a veggie eater and I am already having salad for lunch. Any ideas?
Mef: sorry about your sister. Hope she is home and well soon.
Monet: I would love some of your bread recipes too if you have them on the site.
Teensybean: Do you like using Fitday? Does it help you with the numbers that much?
I will catch up with everyone else later.......have a great day.
Debelli 04-29-2003, 10:24 AM Good Tuesday Morning Everyone:wave:
I didn't get in my walk today. Oh, I got dressed and was ready to go, but I think my "wake-up adrenaline drained between waking up and coming home after taking the kids to school. I didn't get much sleep last night, ELI was snoring up a storm AND had a case of RLS where his legs were moving a mile a minute. When I woke up I felt that I could go walk after I got back but could feel myself draining with each passing minute so I figured why push myself if I really should rest. I even fell asleep for an hour early evening yesterday and woke up 10x more tired than before I fell asleep. I'm hoping for a decent nights rest tonight. May try to get in a nap later. Figured I better do something constructive today so have started folding laundry-there's a ton of it!
BTW, if you did NOT get an e-mail from me yesterday and want to be on my e-mail list please let me know via e-mail. I take my e-mail list from the BIO BOARD and update it accordingly. I've had to delete some old members who've seemed to fallen off the face of the earth. For those of you who've ventured back on the board, like JENN, OVERCOME and others, if you had a BIO on the BIO BOARD it's no longer there, nor is your e-mail in my files, so if you'd like to be back on it, let me know! Debelli@AOL.com
IS ANYONE INTERESTED IN DOING A TELEPHONE TREE PHONE LIST? Many of you I already talk to on the phone from time-to-time and was wondering if anyone else would be interested in having a telephone list? If so, please e-mail me your 3FC'S SCREEN NAME, E-MAIL ADDRESS & TELEPHONE NUMBER along with TIME ZONE. Once we get a good amount of numbers I will e-mail all those who are listed everyone's info. It's really nice to connect with others we've known for so long on the telly!!!!:D
Okay, I've been thinking about something for quite a long time and think this should be discussed a bit more in detail. As many of you know, SB recommends that you should limit your starchy carbs to 2-3 a day. I have questioned this in recent months if this should really be the case, a rule for the masses. The reason why is, in the old SB BOOK, the menus they had listed were for maintenance, though it didn't make it clear AND the menus had approx. 1200-1400 calories on average. I now wonder if limiting the starchy carbs to 2-3 a day was based on these menus and for someone who's to eat more due to their weight, that possibly they should be allowed more starchy carbs than someone who's to eat only 1400 calories, as like myself. How can I, a person who should have 1400 calories on maintenance eat 2-3 starchy carbs be the same as a person who eats 2000 calories a day, or one who eats even more? I'm going to try and look in to this a bit further when I get a chance and let you know what I come up with. Any thoughts???
Dad is STILL in the hospital. Don't know when he'll be sprung, but it doesn't look like any time all that soon. He's not a happy camper at all!
Want to get in some replies before I find myself out of time, or energy...
TV, thanks for checking in!!!
JENN, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a serving of oatmeal is 1/3 cup dry, so you actually had 3 servings, 3 servings of starchy carbs for breakfast alone. A servings of grapes is 3oz, so not far off. For the orange, 4.6 ounce is a serving.
JACKK, I think, if we cheat, it really should be with something we REALLY need to make it worthwhile. These half-assed cheats aren't worth all the effort, esp. if we have to pay for it ten-fold. I figured, if I'm going to cheat, might as well do it up right and get whatever it is you're really desiring to have eaten and out of the way! Glad you liked the MM message, I liked the both of them, but really loved the first one! Try not to get too stressed as the day approaches, think about enjoying yourself! And remember, I WANT TO SEE A PICTURE!!!!!;)
SHEANNE, as you probably read above, I'm wondering about those starchy carbs! But yes, a serving of oatmeal (1/3 cup dry as I pointed out to JENN) is considered a starchy carb serving. Beans are considered a starchy carb AND a protein actually. Just remember, beans have lots of fiber in them and that lowers the actual net impact of the carbs on your body. Just note that if you do use canned beans to make sure you read the label, I was surprised to see many of the beans I bought had added sugar in them! Good luck with meeting all the challenges this week! Do what you can and be proud of what you get accomplished! As for your menu yesterday, hard to say without exact amounts, but it probably a good guess in saying you are way too low.
HEART, isn't it amazing to see where you were and how far you've come! It's so nice when other people notice as well. How did Ashley's play go? What part did she play?
MELF, glad to see you checking in though I'm sorry to hear things are still hectic for you. I am so sorry to hear about your DS, I hope everything goes well with her surgery today. She will be in our thoughts, and please, let us know how she's doing-and how you are doing as well! Sending you lots of {{{HUGS}}}:grouphug:
ROSALIE, can you post that recipe for the soup on the recipe board? I wonder, can you use evaporated milk as well? 1650 calories? That's the lowest I would think you could go. I would personally think more like 1800 calories, but not too far off.
PANCHO, don't worry, may think you are confused but you aren't. This is all knew to you, it's something you don't know about. In asking questions you will learn, it won't be overnight. Just think of this as a learning experience! I can see how my post must of read, not sure why I didn't catch that, but in the second sentence, which is what is important it reads: Anything that is more that 5 grams for one portion (1/2 cup) can't be considered to be a non-starchy veggie. These include: acorn squash, artichokes, beets, burdock root, butternut squash, carrots, corn, green peas, leeks, lima beans, lotus roots, okra, parsnip, potato, pumpkin, rutabagas, sweet potato or yam, turnips. Now, that list being said, we are allowed to have carrots in moderation AND you can have sweet potato, again, in moderation, same goes for pumpkin and squash! Hard to tell you in your area who will have pita bread, but if you are game, I have recipes to make your own! As for the chocolate, my strong suggestion is to forget about it, at least in the beginning. Another one of those things I don't agree on with SB, but Montignacs doesn't suggest it til maintenance, or at least close to it - ESP. if it's a trigger food as it is for me!!! Stay clear of this if you can!!!
TEENSY, I'm sick of driving too-I can empathize with you! Good going with losing inches, don't worry about pounds, you are more than likely gaining muscle and this is going to burn more calories in the long run-good for you! Try adding some more high fiber carbs in your daily intake, that should help! The fat intake is just way too high, esp. for calories being too low. What about calcium? How about some milk? I would probably say to try to add in another fruit serving is you can. Some low-fat cheese possibly. Give it time, and we'll get this tweaked for you!:D
MONET, still doesn't look like enough food!!! Girl, go eat!!!! Let us know if you hear anything from GRACIOUS!
QUILTER, glad to see your post-missed not hearing from you, but was glad to see your post on the exercise board yesterday!:D Did you bid on anything yourself in the auction? Sounds like you had fun! LMK if you meet up with Janice!
JANE, not really up on these bars. The only ones I think I tried in the past for the life of me, I can't remember the name of, but they have them in the stores. Just not sure how legal they really are. I would say, if in a bind, in emergency, you can have one BUT make sure you read the labels and chose one that's the least of all the evils. The salad, very minimum calories, esp. when it comes to regular lettuce. Try to use dark green leafy lettuces if you can, like the mesculine mix, at least they have some nutritional value AND some fiber. I would probably think no more than about 20-25 calories in a salad like that. Yes, if you are talking about the white whole wheat flour, it's legal. I buy the KING ARTHUR brand. I agree with walking outside. I had a treadmill YEARS ago that I gave to my Dad cause I just hated it and it ended up as many treadmills in homes all across of America do, as a clothing rack! I'd much rather be outside, though I do have to admit, a treadmill would be nice on rainy days AND during the summer sweltering months! Veggies, I wish I could help, I don't like them much either, though I do like eggplant and zucchini!
Well, TONIGHT IS CHAT AT 9:15PM EST!! Hope you can make it. I plan on being there though I never know who may need the computer at that particular time, though I do try to give forewarnings that I do need it. As usual, homework comes first, but if I can be there, you can be assured that I will be there!
And, TOMORROW IS WEIGH IN WEDNESDAY! Here's wishing you all wonderful luck with the metal monster tomorrow. I, for one, will not be weighing in until my goal weight anniversary, or at least that's my current thought!
Will check in later!

Fillise 04-29-2003, 10:48 AM Morning all! It's another gorgeous day here! And I'm down another 1/2 pound. I have to remember when I get on a good loss roll than I lose in spurts and that this will likely be followed by a week or two where I don't lose anything at all. So y'all help me remember that the next time I stall--ok? The total since Lent began is 18 lbs--about half of what I need to lost to get back to my low!
Pancho--Welcome! It takes some trial and error at first. The old book said 3 grams the new one says 5 grams--most of us stick to the 3 grams of sugars or below rule (unless it is lactose or fructose--as in milk or tomato sauce. Tomato sauce, for example, has about 8 grams of sugar even if there are no added sugars. Those are the natural sugars from the tomatoes and are ok--just read the label to make sure there is no added sugar or corn syrup!).
Jenn--Try the WW pastry flour--it is a bit lighter and will likely do better!
Jane--Sourdough is OK because the fermentation process does something to inhibit the rise of blood sugar--don't ask me what. You do need to make sure it doesn't have added sugars--which is hard to find. I only eat SD bread occasionally and stick to WW bread as a staple. Instant Oatmeal is not what you should be eating--get the regualr steel cut rolled oats. They cook just as fast in the microwave (trust me) and are much better for you! I love Oatmeal with Agave and cinnamon! AS for the agave you can order from Sweetcactusfarms.com.
Deb--18 since Lent started! I think your awesome Kids are a pretty fine accomplishment for you! Not to mention this board. Not to mention getting your weight off and keeping it off. You have plenty to choose from!
Jackie--The wedding is getting so close! Listen--it will ALL get done. I suppose sometime between now and the big day you will have a meltdown, your DD will have a meltdown--everyone will have a meltdown. Best to get those out of the way ASAP--so go ahead and let loose!
Sheanne--Lima beans a starchy carb--say it ain't so!!! They're my fave! ACtually they are about 38 on the GI, which is extremely low, so I wouldn't worry about them.
Heart--You are STILL doing great--it wasn't so long ago you couldn't break through that 200 mark and look where you are now! I should have come to your house for dinner last night!
Mary--Good to hear from you! I will keep your DS in my thoughts and prayers. You too--that shoulder is really giving you a rough time!
Marie--Can you share the soup recipe? Sounds delish!
Colleen--you are doing great on the exercise challenge! 4 inches is a lot and really shows up in your clothes! WTG!
Monet--Don't get me started on church stuff! I saw a sign that said the definition of Presbyterian hell is being stuck in a deadlocked committee with a chairman that won't make a decision--Been there done that! Got to talk about everything at LEAST a dozen times--sheesh. I've got two church meetings tomorrow night.
Kim--Will also keep my fingers crossed that you have a good WIW!
I'm headed to Montgomery this am--will be there most of the day. I hope everyone has a great OP day!
Susan

jecrites 04-29-2003, 11:01 AM Hello everyone.
Sorry I haven't been around in about a week. I've had my nose stuck in a book, actually 3 books, but I think I'm done reading for a little bit. I just got hooked in the books and couldn't put them down, anyone else ever done that? Plus I haven't been able to get near the computer because hubby has been on leave to go turkey hunting, and while he's here there's no hope of me getting on here. He goes back to work tomorrow though so except for me packing up this house, I should be on like normal again.
The house is supposed to be ready for us on the 5th, but I'm hoping they won't be done with it until the next week. I think we've got things figured out for the girls school stuff though. We are just going to move some things over a little at a time until the girls get out of school and then move everything else. I'm getting tired already just thinking about it:lol:
As of this morning I think I've dropped 2 pounds! For some reason I stay the same up until after TOM has come and gone and then I loose a pound or two. That's fine with me though, at least it's coming off even if it's just a little at a time.
I haven't had a chance to read all the posts and catch up on eveything that's been going on, but I want to say good luck to everyone tomorrow for WIW, hope everyone has a good one!
I gotta run, but I'll be checking back in later on unless hubby takes the computer over.
Jenn
Jenn in MN 04-29-2003, 11:44 AM Hi everyone,
My menu for today:
1 slice sgww banana bread (counting as 2 starchy carbs because of the banana *sigh*)
1 orange
2 hard boiled eggs
1 med. Green apple
6 oz. Pork
baby carrots
6 oz. Blue Bunny NSA yogurt
3 oz. Grapes
I was supposed to make orange chicken (boneless/skinless chicken breasts in orange juice concentrate put in the slow cooker all day), but I forgot to put it on this morning. Now I have to scramble to think of something for dinner. Darn it, we plan 2 weeks worth of dinner menus at a time and I go and blow it. *grumble*
Any thoughts on Brown Sugar Twin ? I used to use it for Atkins recipes, but haven’t checked it out in a while.
Also, is an artichoke really considered a starchy vegetable? I always thought they were “free”, like broccoli, etc. Bad news for me if they are starch! :(
Jack-K, good for you on passing on the chips. Every bit helps!
Laurie, that’s great that your friend gave you some added motivation. I hope to be there someday!
Mary, your DS is in my thoughts & prayers.
Marie, thanks for the heads-up on the ripe bananas. Next time I do the bread, I’ll send it all over to the in-laws. :D
Colleen, I must have missed something somewhere, so forgive me for asking, but what is TBT? Congrats on the inches lost!
Monet, thanks for the Wheat Montana tip. My local upscale store carries their stuff, so I’ll go check it out. Is the white whole wheat legal? (Silly question, it must be if you use it. Duh) Now if I can just find Agave!
Jane, I joined Curves briefly then stopped because the workout was a little boring for me. Funny thing is, after 10 months, they just started charging my bank account again. Grrr!
Deb, I guess I’m confused between calories needed to *lose* weight, and calories needed to maintain, like you are. I thought that the reduced calories were necessary to have the loss, then you add some back to keep your weight. Am I way off base? I guess that’s why I wasn’t too freaked out about eating 1400 calories/day. on the starchy carbs at breakfast.
Susan, congrats on the further loss. 18 lbs. since lent??? Wow! :D
Jenn, yay on the 2 lbs! I get caught up in books, too. It can be a problem when I avoid my homework by doing other reading.
That’s it for now. Check back with you all later!
Jenn
star998 04-29-2003, 12:19 PM Hello everyone,
It's a beautful day here in Houston....I can see the blue sky from my window and I wish I were outside instead of huddled behind my computer!
This is my second day on SB and so far I haven't bitten anyone's head off, but I do feel a bit light-headed--is that normal?
Also, I was reading the book and what I got out of it was that counting calories are not necessary--is this true? And what about fat grams? I'm just a little confused I guess....but that's why I'm here, to ask questions and gain support!
Decided to forego Curves last night and do a major overhaul on my fridge and pantry. Man, I had no idea how much stuff I used to eat was packed with sugar! Then went to the store and bought about $80 in groceries, and I feel so much better. My workout buddy and I made a pact to go to Curves tonight...
I know I'm going to ask tons more questions over the next week or so until I finally get situated and fully understand everything, so bear with me! You all seem like you know what you're doing, so I think I've come to the right place!
Hunger pangs overtaking....going to eat a handful of mixed nuts and get back to work!
Have a wonderful day, everyone!
B :)
Solly 04-29-2003, 12:55 PM Good Tuesday Morning,
Hope everyone is doing great today.
I have been busy working on that program. Almost ready to print.
A friend is coming over tonight to make some bows for the unity candle and my birdcage for cards. I have no talents. DSis is making the bows for the pews.
Heartmom, what a nice compliment from your friend to get you motivated.
Melf, prayers for your DS> Hope things go ok.
Rosalie, I would love the recipe for the cream of broccoli soup. Please post it.
Monet, did you hear the earthquake in Alabama last night?
Teensy, Wow 4". That is wonderful. Keep up the good work.
Kim, I was starting to wonder about you. Glad you had fun at the auction. I'm always keyed up after Bunco and can't get to sleep. Keeping my figners crossed for you to get a now low tomorrow.
Jane, I like walking on my time too. So much easier. How abut 1/2 a sweet potato for dinner.
Deb, I think your idea on the starchy carbs is right on. I know WW does that depending on your weight and men get more too. I always wondered how a man could survive on 2-3 starch carbs. My DH does it and he normally eats 4 pc of ww bread a day.
Susan, 18 pounds for Lent is awesome. Just keep up the good work. You are on a roll right now. Hope it doesn't end. Did you feel the earthquake last night? I think I had that meltdown Sunday.
Jecrites, Congrats on the 2lbs. i think you plan for moving is a good one. You won't get worn out all at once.
Jenn can you switch another nights dinner for tonight? Maybe soemthing that doesn't have to cook so long. I have only used the Brwon Sugar twin a little. Seems to have an after taste.
Star, Welcome to our group. Lots of support here. Ask all the questions you need to. Someone will have an answer. Maybe you need to eat a little more if you are light headed. Or eat more frequently. Protein seems to help better. Eat some cheese or something.
Have a great day.

Ellen 04-29-2003, 01:21 PM Morning!
Here it is Tuesday, and I have already been a bad girl! Shame on Monet! :(
Jumped right back on program this morning with oatmeal and blueberries. Boy do I love that. Thank you Rosalie and Quilter!
I have a friend coming over for coffee at nine. I have been trying to get her on SB for ages. I KNOW she has a thyroid problem, but her doctor is old school and thinks she is ok. Some days, I want to weep for her. I see myself 10 years ago in her situation, and wish I could spare her a lot of pain and misery.
SHEANNE: I put my bread recipe on the board a while ago. Not sure where it is, but here it is again: (I have a bread machine, and mix the dough in the machine, but take it out, knead it, then shape it and raise it and bake it by hand.)
2 cups warm water
4.5 cups Wheat Montana Prairie Gold whole wheat flour
4 T vital wheat gluten (this makes a lighter, softer product)
1 T salt
2 T agave, or 1 T sugar for yeast
4 T peanut oil
1.5 teaspoons quick rise yeast
In the ABM, put in in order given. Set for dough. When done, punch down, knead a few times lightly, form two loaves, let rise until just above top of pan. Bake at 375 for about 30 min. Remove from oven, and pans , cool on wire rack.
Check the Wheat Montana web page for places near you that carries their flour. It does make a difference!
TEENSY: Do you use butter to scramble your egg? Do you use light mayo? Hellmans (or Best Foods in the west...) light is very good, and will cut the fat in half. I also get the very lean ground beef, which saves a lot of fat. I struggle to keep my fat intake down too. Not sure if I have any great tips to pass on. I try to make sure those I do eat are the monosaturated types, like olive and peanut.
PANCHO: I find two brands of ww pitas that are legal around here. Tofayan, and Middle Eastern Baking Company. The MEBC is a local company, and I go to their outlet store a lot to get pitas. Hope you can find some 100% ww ones! If all else fails, you can make them! They are great right out of the oven!
I started this several hours ago, and then STUFF happened! The phone rang, someone came to the door, and I just got back and found I never finished! Sorry! Will be back later to catch up!
Debelli 04-29-2003, 01:47 PM Hey All:wave:
Thought I'd get in a post before I had to get the kids from school, or at least one of the kids, possibly one has to stay later, meaning 2 trips! ELI wants me to come to STARBUCKS tonight, they are having music and a little bday party for 2 of the employees. I think I'll let it slide, I don't want to go a third time, or actually, it would be a fourth time in that area-it's right near the school. I have those days that I despise driving and they seem to be getting more frequent!
FILLISE, you go girl! My goodness, you'll be at 20lbs before you know it. This Lent is a good thing! So good that they made it year round in Alabama, I hear!;) It's really awesome to see such a great loss!!!
JEC, my nose gets stuck in books, though they are mostly cookbooks. You'd think I was some bigtime lover of cooking with the hundreds that I have, but no way:nono: What are you reading that's so good that you can't put down? I've read a few books like that in my life, but not many. I use to love to read, esp. juicy books!;)
JENN, you DO know that bananas really aren't on this WOE, though I do know of people who've eaten bananas and had no problems meeting their goal weight. Usually though banana bread, the bananas are usually over-ripe, the worst way you could eat a banana on this WOE if you wanted to. Was what you listed breakfast and/or lunch? Never used the Twin sugars, I try to stay away from that kind of stuff, though I do think others on the board may have and possibly can tell you what they think of it. When you are trying to lose weight you don't want to cut your calories way down. "Experts" say not to cut your caloric intake more than 500-700 calories a day (300 if you have less to lose), if you cut too much you're metabolism will slow down. Here's an example: a person who weighs 250 pounds and was moderately active would take in approx. 3000 calories to maintain that weight. 2300 calories would be the MAX they should cut their calories down (they get whittled down as the weight comes off). Say that person had a goal weight of 130lbs. A person who weighs 130 pounds would have to take in approx. 1550 calories. Is that person who is 250 pounds ate the caloric intake of their goal weight they'd be cutting their caloric intake almost in half, the body can't handle that and will think it's starving and will go into starvation mode, thus lowering the metabolism and slowing down the weight loss if not stopping all together. Not eating enough can be just as bad as eating to much.
STAR http://members.aol.com/eldemila/sb_sign4.jpg You'll be happy to know you are among quite a few Texans on this board, though I do believe you are the only one from Houston. What you are experiencing is VERY normal and should disappear in a couple days. It's your body detoxing from the sugars. It's like a drug withdrawl. Hopefully, you'll never have to experience what it feels like when you eat sugar again either-like a druggie who's been clean but once they get a taste of that drug again, WATCH OUT! There are many things in the SB BOOK that are misleading, confusing, contradictory and things I just plain don't agree with, but that's my opinions, esp. the last part. I do believe calories count, they have to! SB recommends that no more than 30% of your intake come from fat, if calories weren't important, how the heck are you suppose to know if you are getting that 30% or not?:?: You've definitely come to the right place, not only for us to help answer your questions and guide you, but for wonderful support from some great people all in the same boat and all trying to acheive the same goals. We're happy to have you aboard!:D
JACKK, I don't know if you put this before or not, suffering from CRS syndrome here, but how many people are expected at the wedding? I'm really bound and determined to find out more info on the starchy carb issue. There has to be more to it. I just can't see where I can eat 3 at goal weight and someone who has to lose 100 pounds can have the same. Will have to delve in to the web a bit more and see what I can scrounge up!
Okay, I'm outta here. Still have some clothes to fold on the couch, basically my stuff. I have one of those FLIP N FOLDS which makes folding my work-out shirts a lot easier and faster!

CountryMom4Him 04-29-2003, 02:10 PM Howdy all. I've been reading even though I haven't posted in a few days. I think all that walking and not eating enough finally caught up with me. I had to take a few days off. I did get in almost 26 miles last week. It feels funny not to be walking right now. I did get out and mow for about 40 minutes yesterday and will try to do that again today.
Welcome Star! I'm in Texas also....near Lake Livingston. And I agree it is beautiful today. As for counting calories..I know that some do but I don't. That's one of the reason I chose this plan. I get to hung up on numbers if I am not careful.
Jenn....if you can find it I think the Sir Authur flour has the best texture of the WW that I have found. I made some bread with it and it was very light and delicious.
Jack-K...the wedding is getting so close. I just know it's going to be so wonderful. You are going to look like the bomb....there are rules about showing up the bride..:) Just teasin'...I know your daughter is going to be a vision. There is nothing as beautiful as a woman in love walking down that isle.
jecrites....I just finshed a book also. First time the kids have let me in a while.
Susan...18 pounds is great! You'll be at an all time new low very soon.
((Kim)) those scales will come right back down. I LOVE going to auctions. It's been ages. I have this cute little coffee table in here that I won for 12.50....first bid I ever won..LOL I'm cheap and won't go real high.
Welcome Poncho! You will have all this down pat in no time. You'll find which things work best for you and settle into a way of eating that you can do for life.
I am missing half of ya'll....please forgive me and know that I LOVE you ALL! The kids are on a tear. Gotta go handle em. Have a blessed day.
Love,
Crystle

jane8760 04-29-2003, 02:10 PM I just thought I would share.......I put my food intake for today into FitDay as Rosalie and Teensybean do and the numbers are:
Total calories for the day 1503
Fat 28%
Carbs 30%
Protein 41%
Unless I am mistaken that is good right? This is including dinner by the way just not the wine that I may have :D
I liked that web site except for having to search for all the foods and adding custom ones if they didn't have any but it was a good way to see if I was in check for the day. Might be a handy tool to use once in a while to keep an eye on how I am doing percentage wise.
I went shopping at lunch because none of my friends were taking lunch today it seemed. I went to Pier 1 Imports. I bought some wine glasses. My husband keeps breaking them in the dishwasher. I hope these ones aren't too tall. They look like they may be :( If they are then it is back to the store tomorrow.
I just had my lunch and if I remember right I am not supposed to have fruit for a hour or so after I eat. Is that correct? I REALLY want my orange!
Debelli 04-29-2003, 03:17 PM For those of you who are NOT on my mailing list (see what you could be missing...) check out the site below and scroll down to analyze your menu!

heartmom 04-29-2003, 03:44 PM DEB- Ashley was in a "group" Earth Day play so she didn't have an individual part.
Man, it was 9:30 before we ate last night!! I was so hungry that I ate about 3 times the amount I would normally have and then while the chicken was cooking I was so hungry that I ate 2 servings of triscuits with Smuckers peanut butter. I can't believe the scale didn't show a gain today. Still at 193. Told hubby that I will NEVER eat that late again. Well, I haven't exercised in a week or so, so it's time to get my butt back into gear. Plan on doing the 2 mile tape today. For breakfast I made a strawberry smoothie(I'm addicted, lol) and for lunch I made chicken salad with the leftover chicken from last night. It was sooo good but had more fat than I needed. Put some onion, celery, pickles, egg, mayo, salt and pepper in it and ate a slice of Nature's Own red carb bread with it. Took out some sirloin steaks for supper. Going to grill them and make a salad and sweet potatoes with it. Well, that's it for now.
Jenn in MN 04-29-2003, 03:50 PM Hi all, just a quick check-in here. How do you keep from munching at work (if you sit at a computer all day like me)? I was thinking SF gum might help?
What's the carb/fat/protein ratio we're supposed to be shooting for? 40-30-30?
Hi Star, isn't it amazing what they put sugar in and you don't even realize it?
Jack-K, how exciting you're almost done! I'm sure the results will be wonderful. :D I am trying to figure out what to cook tonight. Tomorrow night is pizza (I am at school, so I won't eat it!), and Thursday was chicken nuggets for the kidlet, and pork chops for the grownups, but I haven't taken them out of the freezer. I guess I'll come up with something.
Monet, my doc says my thyroid is "normal", but I swear it's not. I am tired all the time, even with iron supplements and all the tests being in the "normal" range. Oh well.
Deb, yes I know bananas are a :nono: Funny thing is I don't even like them! I just had a bunch that Dan didn't eat, hence the bread. I froze the rest of the loaf, so I won't be tempted to snack on it. I am also curious how your research into the levels of starchy carbs goes. Keep us informed!
Crystle, thanks for checking in. Sounds like you have been walking a LOT!
Jane, so far on FitDay I'm at 34% carbs, 38% fat, 27% protein, at 1042 calories. Cool tool, thanks!
ttfn,
Jenn
Ellen 04-29-2003, 05:32 PM Well, I finally bit the bullet and did it. I got in the pool. Woo hoo! It was cold as a .... well, maybe I better not say that here. When I got out of the water, it felt really warm. If that did not speed up my metabolism, I don't know what will! I spent about 20 minutes running on the slope. Its hard to judge how much exercise you get, since you don't sweat! :)
By the way, I had a reply post from Gracious on the other forum. She said she is very busy, has moved up with her Avon and is doing more an Atkins maintaining stage, so she is posting over there. She said she fell off the wagon for a while and had a lot of company. I tried to encourage her to stop in...hope she does. She sends greetings to everyone.
JENN: The Endocrinologist Association recently revamped the 'normal' acceptable levels for thyroid. Now they are .3 to 3.0. If you had yours checked more than a few months ago, they may have been viewing your results in light of the old levels. If you have a copy of your lab work, check to see what your TSH is. If it is above 3.0, then it is too high and you may benefit from thyroid hormones. You can check out the top thyroid doctors on about.com's thyroid pages. Many doctors just don't know anything about thyroids, and will do very little to treat problems. My TSH was always normal, but a bit high. After almost 10 years and at least 50 pounds, it finally crept up to just above normal, and a doctor finally would listen to me and was willing to try and treat me. That was the beginning of quite a journey. Read up on the conditions, symptoms at about.com, and also read the advice on finding a doctor and questions to ask. Ok, I will get off the :soapbox: now...
DEB: I checked out some of the linked pages on that diet analyzing page. Very interesting stuff. It says my range of resting metabolic expenditure could be anywhere from 1450 to 2000 calories. I fall consistently below their recommended intake of 1700 calories. Not by much...I am usually around 1400 to 1500. It is thought provoking though....
JECRITES: I am a book addict... I could read all day, everyday! When Iget a good new one, I can't put it down, either! I find reading while walking on the treadmill to be a good incentive for me to exercise!
COUNTRY: Glad to see you back! I was wondering where you were!
QUILT: Working on that auction sounds like fun. Are you a big fan of PBS? I love the Brit Brigade....:) I don't get the chance to watch it much tho!
JACK: No! I slept through the earthquake this morning. It may have kind of woken me up, but I incorporated it into my dreams, and was not totally aware of it. My son in law told me it woke him up, and my daughter was on her way to work and said she did not feel it at all!
STAR: Welcome! Glad you joined us!
Ok..tonight is Massage for Food night. I have to go make dinner for my massage therapist. We trade...I make her family dinner, and she gives me free massage. Ah! Life is good!
Solly 04-29-2003, 05:42 PM Jenn, right after lunch I always get a craving for something sweet, so I chew a piece of sf gum. It really helps. But other times I snack on cheese, nuts, yogurt.
Monet, Wow I bet that water was cold. I like water aerobics. Good for you taking the plunge. Thanks for the update on Gracious. Hope she pops in to say hi. Glad you didn't get any affects from the quake. I like your massage deal.
Deb, 360+ expected at the wedding.
Country, after 26 miles you deserve a break. I'm sure moving all that grass counts right in there too.
Jane, the fruit 2 hours later is a digestion thing. If you don't have any problems with that then eat it whenever. I always eat mine with lunch.
Have a great night everyone. Don't know if I'll make it to chat. Friend is coming over to make bows.
Good luck to everyone on the scale tomorrow.
Jackie
jane8760 04-29-2003, 06:04 PM Just a quick note before I head home.....actually to the grocery store. Grrrr
Jack-K: thank you for the info on the fruit. I do not have digestion problems so I am going to start having it whenever I want!
Deb: I still cannot get the web site to figure me at anything other than 1200 calories a day. I am going to stick with the information that you gave me. You suggested 1700 calories and I have been hangin around a low of 1500 and a high of 1700.
Monet: you have me thinking and thinking about my rose bushes now. I can't wait till they bloom. Up here in Massachusetts it will be later than yours I'm sure!
Good luck to us all tomorrow. I am not expecting any loss but will check in none the less.
Talk to you tomorrow.
overcome 04-29-2003, 06:29 PM Hi all-
Don't have a lot of time to read or post! Just skimmed a lot of the messages.
I don't have a whole lot to report. Just hanging in there and determined to stay on this woe. I've had some cravings, but they passed. I did give in and have an anise biscotti that DH made. I just love anise! Oh well. Got right back on track. I'm at the stage where I'll eat a box of triscuits (j/k) just to avoid an illegal food. I know I'll move away from that soon, but right now I just want to stay legal!
I'm off to go on the treadmill. I love it that it is staying light out longer. Makes me feel great!
Just wanted to say hi!
Talk soon-
Ashley
Rosalie 04-29-2003, 07:01 PM Hi Everyone
Just checking in to tell you I have posted the recipe for the Cream of Broccoli Soup.
JENN - If I am not too late for your supper how about cutting up the chicken and doing a stir fry with some onions, red/green peppers and some veggies. This could be served alone or on a tortilla with some salsa. If you don't have any salsa you could cut up some tomatoes and add some herbs and a little lemon juice or vinegar.
Sorry I can't stay here any longer. I have been out most of the day and will be heading out again to badminton this evening. I bought a ready cooked chicken for supper and it is in the oven keeping warm. Have to get to it before it is overcooked.
Marie.
heartmom 04-29-2003, 07:02 PM Overcome- too much starchy carbs(triscuits) can also get those sugar cravings going. Try some lean protein- a good snack is a slice of meat and cheese. A boiled egg- Smucker's all natural peanut butter with an apple. Hand full of nuts( I stay away from them since I don't know when to stop, lol). Anyway, I've noticed that if I increase my intake of protein, the cravings start to diminish.
Okay- I finally did it- I did my 2 mile tape today after much procastination. I was a little hungry awhile ago so I had a granny smith apple with some peanut butter.
I need to exercise at least 4 days a week- try to shoot for 5. Not for sure if I will have time Thursday or not since I have to take Boogie to Jackson for his ped. cardiology appt. Check back later...
Rosalie 04-29-2003, 07:54 PM The chicken was good. I had it with a mixed bean salad and some coleslaw. For dessert I put a cut up, peeled apple in a dish with some frozen raspberries and a dash of cinnamon and a squirt of lemon juice and nuked it. Delicious. I'm just sitting here for a few minutes to finsish my coffee then I have to get changed and run. I really should have eaten earlier. I feel kind of stuffed to go running around.
Marie.
Teensybean 04-29-2003, 07:59 PM Good afternoon to you all--probably evening now for most of you. Cold and windy here today. So didn't get much done again today. When are things going to get back to normal?? Aunt and Uncle are having a garage sale this week end and dh was tired of sitting home, so I drove over there so he could browse through their goodies. Got some good deals on pyrex bakeware. Love this stuff, clean up is so easy. Got a brand new heating pad for dh too.
Relative's got an even better deal. Ha ha!!
Sheanne-- Yes I love that little machine. I also like to walk, just not on a tread mill. Have you checked the papers, they usually have a lot of exercise equiptment for sale, pretty reasonable. Just a thought.
Jane--I like using fitday because I know exactly where I am. It takes a long time at first, because you have to enter in the products that you use. But once most of them are in....it is just the click of a mouse! I also use it to figure out the nutritional info for whole recipes or dishes that I make.
Deb-- What would be some high fiber carbs? I am already using my 2 starchy carbs with the Fiber One, and a serving of bread at lunch. Never been a milk drinker, but I love cheese. Just need to find some low fat stuff that taste's good! I would love to add more fruit if you think it is okay. I am already eating two and a half servings. Yes, I know that eventually we will get it. I can't believe how patient you are with me. And I want you to know that I really do appreciate it.
Jenn-- I think I talked about it before you came back. It is a weight resistance machine. I ordered it online at bodybyjake.com It is small, and compact, and very affordable, unlike the Bowflex, and Total Gym. (Which I would love to have, if I had the room, and the budget!) LOL. Your Orange chicken sounds good. Do you just use any Orange Juice Concentrate? Are most OJ's SB legal? The one I checked didn't have any ingredients listed but orange concentrate. Is this okay?
Monet--Thanks for sharing the bread recipe. I will definitely be trying it. I use Pam to scramble my eggs in, and use the Best Food's Lite Mayo for my dressings. Our meat is all home grown, and the hamburger is X-Lean. I am just amazed sometimes when I see the fitday results. I think I am doing great, and then I see the bottom line. SIGH, I really do try.
Star--Welcome to the SB board. This is a great group to be a part of.

CHAT TONIGHT AT 9:15PM EST!
Ellen 04-29-2003, 09:37 PM Ok..here is today's menu. Ya'all (that is Southern for you all...) can critique it for me.
B. 1 serving oatmeal (1/2 cup dry) 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, tea
S. 2 scrambled eggs, 2 slices bacon
L. PB & J on whole wheat bread (two very thin slices...honest!)
S. BB nsa yogurt
D. shrimp scampi (4 oz shrimp, 1 T olive oil, garlic) on 1/2 cup whole wheat pasta, broccoli, BB nsa fudgesicle
56oz of water so far...will get in the remaining eight and then some before bed
Totals: Fats: 35% Protein: 22% Carbs: 43% 1350 calories
I guess I had too many starchy carbs, and not enough protein. I had a hard time finding anything to eat that appealed to me. Seems PMS is making me feel blah. I keep thinking I should try upping my calories, but amazingly, it is kind of hard to do! Tomorrow is PAYDAY, so I can go shopping and try and get some things to make it easier. I will take suggestions, though!
Guess I will go read for a bit and try to get back on for chat.
Ellen 04-29-2003, 09:53 PM JANE: My roses are already in bloom! Not all of them, but the early bloomers, like Zepherine Droughin, Cherokee Rose, Lace Cascade, and Austin's Ellen are all blooming. There are a few more, but I won't bore you with a list! ;) I will try and add a picture instead!
This is Duchesse da Brabant. It was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite rose, and he always had one on his lapel. Its very fragrant.
j red 04-29-2003, 10:36 PM Hey there Ladies!
I'm checking in and happy to see some familiar names still here, much more consistent than me. I am finishing up the semester - one more class next Monday that's a big presentation night. Our professor has asked us to invite all of our school district administrators, school board members and school co-workers. It's making all 15 of us very nervous! When that's over, I begin a May mini-session. It's a three hour course taken in a two week period. It's an educational technology internet based course. At the end of the summer, I'll have 15 hours of my Master's finished, just about half way.
I'm doing great food-wise. Still OP and losing just as slowly as ever. But I have lost 52 pounds and am just 14 away from goal. I'm weary baggy size 10 jeans now and can't believe it's me when I look in mirror. I look like my mother! (That's a compliment, btw)
Graduation is fast approaching and we are busy with that. Last weekend was the senior prom. Becca won a scholarship to West Texas A&M and will study music therapy. She also won a local music organization's scholarship and was asked to sing "Some Enchanted Evening" at their Mother's Day concert. I'll have lots of tissue handy!
I'll try to do better checking in on everyone. Have a great Wednesday!!
Jeanie
HiedieHo All!

TOMOROW HAVE A DENTIST APPOINTMENT. i LOST A LARGE FILLING LAST WEEK AND THIS IS THE FIRST OPENING THEY HAD. NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. WHY DOES A DENTIST VISIT SEEM WORSE THAN A GYN VISIT?
MY DD IS COMING FOR GD'S GRADUATION. IS GOING TO FLY IN AND RENT A UHAUL TO DRIVE BACK SO SHE CAN TAKE THE FURNITURE I AM GIVING HER. THINK I WOULD LIKE TO GO BACK WITH HER AND THEN FLY HOE IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. DON'T KNOW IF SHE WANTS THAT OR NOT.
GD IS PACKING FOR SENIOR TRIP TO DISNEY IN FLA. THEY LEAVE TOMORROW NIGHT.
SORRY I DID NOT TAKE TIME TO ANSWER POSTS ALTHOUGH I DID READ THEM
Take care, Shirley
Ellen 04-29-2003, 11:33 PM Night everyone! Chat was fun! If you were not there, you are too square!
jecrites 04-29-2003, 11:41 PM Hello everyone!
I didn't make it to chat. I was about to go in there and the phone rung. It was my SIL's hubby. I haven't heard from them in a while either. Anyway, he was calling to let us know that they are thinking about coming up here not this weekend but next. I can't worry about keeping this house clean with the move going on at that time either, oh well, they've seen my house in a mess before.
Ok ladies, here's some more news; I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring in a year and I got it back on tonight!!! Now I just have to get used to wearing it again.
Monet, that is a pretty rose. I had planted 2 rose bushes before we moved up here and luckily I got to see them bloom before we moved. I love the smell of them; my favorite ones are any of them that are orange. I don't know the names of any of them, but I know I like the orange ones. My MIL on the other hand doesn't care what color they are, she has them planted up the side of her house and down the fence too. She gets really excited when they bloom.
Deb, Are you sure you want to know what I was reading? Ok, well here goes. A while back I bought Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for my oldest girl, she started it but never finished it, so I took it upon myself to read it just to see how much of it was different from the movie. Well, I kind of got hung up on it and had to go get the next two and now I'm waiting for the latest one to come out. Geez the things kids can get you hooked on. I honestly had no intentions of reading that first one, I just don't know what came over me.:?: Anyway, I enjoyed the books and keep telling my girls that I know stuff that they don't know hoping that it will encourage them to read the books and find out what it is. I even have the hubby reading them now:lol: :o
It's time for bed so I'm gonna go and I'll see y'all tomorrow. Have a good night and a good morning.
Jenn
Rosalie 04-30-2003, 12:50 AM Got in from badminton about an hour ago and I am pooped. Legs are feeling tired this evening so will be hitting the sack very soon. I put most of my food into Fit-Day but a couple of things I couldn't find so it's not completed. My calories are approx. 1700 but too high a percentage of fat to-day partly due to the fact that I didn't have much protein at lunch. Will have to do better tomorrow. Here's what I had to-day:
2 scrambled eggs with bacon and 1 tomato and 1/4 green pepper
Coffee with 10% cream
2 small slices Sha Sha Ezekial Bread
1 1/2 tbs cream cheese
2 tbs blueberry jam
1 cup 2% milk with 1/2 tsp instant coffee
3 oz grapes
1 cup tea with lemon
1/2 oz peanuts
1/4 small chicken (white)
3/4 cup cole slaw (oil/vinegar dressing)
1/2 cup bean salad
2 small apples with 1/4 cup raspberries - nuked
Coffee with cream
1 cup 2% milk.
Water +++
DEB - Thanks for sending the Menu Analyzer website. Haven't had time to check it out properly yet. Hope to do so sometime tomorrow.
Hope to check in in the morning but have laundry to do, Tai Chi at 10. if I feel up to it and dentist at 11.30.a.m.
Marie.
Hey Everyone! Thought I'd better try to pop in & check the board & try to post a little.
My DS had her surgery today. They had to give her 2 more units of blood during surgery, but she's stable now with a hct of 30. Has not hardly slept all day because of unrelieved pain, but Thank God she's stable. The doctor was pleased with the outcome. Thank you all for your support & prayers. I do appreciate each & every one.
ROSALIE, Hi! Thanks for missing me. Have really missed being here too, but you know how things can be when you work as we do. The shoulder is actually better today than it has been in a long time. Funny thing is that as I was driving to work yesterday morning I had this horrible pain shoot through my upper chaest which radiated from the center of my chest & back all the way across! The pain was like a shock that went through me, then subsided. It left me sore for a good while, but as the day went by, I noticed that I could now lift my right arm without as much pain. Today it's still a little better, have been able to do my regular work & lifting patients without winching in pain. Not sure I understand what has happened, but Thank God it has!
sheanne, Thanks for your kind words & prayers for DS. If you read my entry above, you saw that they gave her 2 more units of PRBC's today during surgery...that's a total of 6. She also has Lupus & RA as well as Diabetes, so she's having a rough time, but thank God, she's ok now & look for a speedy recovery. Glad to hear that your outcome was good too.
QUILTER/Kim, Sounds like you really enjoyed the PBS station's action auction last night!
jane8760, White WW flour. I bought some in Jan when I visit Deb in Miami. She's the one that pointed it out to me, so yes, it's legal! About the protein bars...check out the Atkins bars. Net carbs are 2-3 per bar & there are some really tasty ones like the Smores & Chocolate Raspberry, but my favorite is Chocholate decadant. I don't do these on a regular basis, but there are times that it's that or nothing, especially on late morings egtting to work or on those hectic days that I cannot take a lunch break at work.
Debelli, Count me in on the phone tree..will be emailing you my info soon. Sorry to hear that your dad is in the hospital. Is he ok??? Thanks for the hugs...really needed them :) I posted news of DS above, & read my note to Rosalie about the shoulder. Really anxious to see if the relief will last & what the doctor will think about what happened!
FILLISE, 18 lbs since lent! WOW you go girl! You ARE on a roll! Keep up the great work & thanks for the prayers for DS.
jecrites, 2 lbs is great girl, keep up the good work.
Jenn in MN, Thanks for your prayers for DS. Brown Sugar Twin ... have used iot, not sure that I would use it on a regular bases, but would occasionally if I could find it again! LOL I have not been able to find it for a while now. Bought 1 box of it & seemed to be ok.
star998, Welcome to the board! Cleaning out that fridge was a great start. Read those labels! A great way to stay informed about what you're eating. It has become a habit now. I never buy anything without checking out the label to see what's in it..not just the carbs & nuritional values.
Jack-K Sounds like the wedding must be really close. I'll bet you are more talented than you give yourself credit for!
Country, Sonds like you have been really busy wth your walking. Great work! Send me some of your will power will you!! LOL
overcome, WOW!! Have not seen you in sooooo long! Welcome back. Was thinking about you not too long ago when I came across that neat card you had sent me. I still have it, too!
j red, Baggy size 10! You go girl, that is really great. :D :cp:
SEF Hope your GD has a safe senior trip. Hope your headach is better too :)
Chat! Got on too late, but glad to be able to contribute to the posts for a change. It's been a while & I really do miss it. Hope everyone has a good WIW. Have to bring DD to an early dr's appt in the morning, then gone to visit with DS in the hospital, so I'd better hit the hay or else I will not get up early enough to get to where I need to be on time! Nite all
Teensybean 04-30-2003, 01:47 AM Okay here goes today's menu, I really thought I had gotten the calories up today and the fat down, but noooo...... today I am also low on protein.
Can anyone pick this menu apart, and add what would be better? I know I |
