Unfortunately I don't know what would cause that. Usually if it's a problem the size the error message will tell you so. Sometimes a member will tell me that they received the 'upload failed' error when uploading a profile pic but their picture appears anyway.
Were you uploading an avatar (visible on your posts) or a profile pic (visible on your profile page)?
