Monday my check engine light came on. Tuesday, I left car at a different dealer than I usually use. Picked up car on Wednesday & bill was $150 more than I expected. Stupidly, I paid & signed & went home.
At home, I read bill & saw $150 worth of stuff I had NOT approved. This has been eating at me since.
Today, I told my DD. She accompanied me to the dealer and raised the roof. The manager came out and refunded me the $150!
I feel better. Although I would have felt MUCH better if I had handled it myself. I have lost most of my confrontational tendencies in my old age.
Lynn, I feel for you with expensive car repairs in December I've had several in the last few months and my heater blower just stopped working. My car is 12 years old with 208,000 miles on it, but I still hate to pay for repairs (guess it beats a new car payment). Yesterday my garage door broke and I have to pay someone to come out and fix it today. When it rains it pour$$$.
I've been AWOL from here since Thanksgiving - Have been busy hosting, then I came down with a strep infection on Sunday evening - turned into a really nasty ear infection which kept me home from work all week. With antibiotics it's improving (very slowly) but I still have ringing in that ear and feel like I was hit by a truck and dragged a few blocks. With all of this I only lost 1 pound.
I'm looking forward to the weekend and plan to put up my Christmas tree and house decorations which is always fun to do. We always put on Chrismas music as we decorate as it gets us in the mood. One radio station here started playing Christmas music NON-STOP the day after Halloween! A bit early, I'd say!
Lynn...I had a similar thing happen to me with a Electrolux vacuum cleaner, sent it in for a new belt only. They cleaned it, put on a new brush roller and charged me a humongous fee (can't remember how much as this was a few years ago) I was so mad, I told them to put everything back on they took off but the new belt. They did, I told them off and never set foot in their door again. They're still in business, maybe they learned a good lesson from me. This is a good lesson to us too, I think our generation is too trusting. Lynn...glad you got your money back. Just think of all the bad advertising through 'word of mouth' that dealers will get, same for the vacuum cleaner business. They should think, is it worth it?

I need to check to see if Mercury is in retrograde. My DD and my sister also had mechanical things break this week.
I felt the same way. I have around 100,000 miles on my Toyota Prius. I REALLY hope to get at least 300,000. I figured $1,000 is better than $25,000 for a new car.

I checked after I posted this message the first time - Mercury went into retrograde on November November 24th, 2011, and lasts for three weeks or so, until December 14, 2011.

I just heard from my mom and apparently my dad has "the most serious case of sleep apnea" that the dr has seen in a long time. He has been fitted with a CPAP machine which he has agreed to wear. He is also to remain on oxygen at all times. Dad refuses to use oxygen while at work. (it would be unweildy and I suspect he thinks they would force him to retire). The Dr assured mom that he is in no danger for not using it at work but it might shorten his life expectancy if his oxygen saturation continues to be low. I guess it is a choice - his choice. They will be doing retesting of his heart after 60 days of using the machine.
My dad is 76 years old. He is a life-long farmer. Several years ago, the toll of putting up with my crazy and abusive younger brother exploded, and dad stopped attempting to meet his increasing demands. My brother split from the family (including refusing us contact with the three little girls). My dad "retired" as a farmer, selling off the equipment but keeping our land and leasing it out. Three days after the sale, a fertilizer company recruited him and he is a valued member of the team. He works the same kind of hours as he did when farming - frequent 14 - 16 hour days. But, it makes him happy and I think if he retired he would just sit in his easy chair and die within a couple years. He comes by it naturally - my beloved grandpa was diagnosed with cancer (at age 96) in december and passed away 6 months later. The fall before he was diagnosed, he plowed, disked, harrowed and leveled over 700 acres of farmland. Literally, I watched him climb into his giant tractor for the last time in late november and then sat on his hospital bed and listened to the dr tell us his options a little over a month later.
So, after spending the last 16 hours thinking about all the worst possibilities (social workers have just enough medical knowledge to be really and profoundly scared) I am grateful that the current diagnosis isn't too bad. Dad has been diabetic for almost 15 years and he doesn't take very good care of it. His primary dr seems ok with his results. He is about 75 pounds overweight, too. My mom has promised that she will start doing some light excercise and will hopefully inspire him to make some better choices. So, I am relieved. I am also sad because I don't forsee celebrating my dad's 96th birthday with him.
Sorry for the long post about this. I will endeavor to remember "worse things have happened to nicer people". I guess I just needed to talk about it. I am going to go for a walk and get my head together. I will try to get back later for personals.

I need to get some supper, but wanted to say, Val, that I'm thinking of you, and hoping and praying for the best possible results for your dad. Mine was the same way...working out and around his grounds until he died of a heart attack. He went quickly and unexpectedly when I was in my early twenties...good thing for him as he'd have been miserable as an invalid, but so hard on those of us he left behind. I am wishing your dad many happy and productive years ahead. He's strong, Val...he'll push on, and won't go until it's his time. I will be thinking of you, and will light a candle tonight for healing for your dad.

It's the craziest thing...I feel like I'm so busy but yet don't seem to get much done these days. Guess it's because I'm shopping online for gifts and then I get distracted and start entering sweeps and doing surveys. I got two GCs in the mail today...Subway $10 (from a good deal site I think), and a Visa $135 from that big survey project I did recently. Always fun to get GC (or money!) in the mail! About the only thing I've done today beyond some daily housework is wash the bedding from the little bed in my office. Only have someone sleep in there about once a year do don't do it often.
Dh is still having pain in his mouth...seems to be the gum but not sure what is causing it since dentist couldn't find anything. He got some Orajel today and so far that seems to help more than anything. Not much going on here to talk about...haven't heard a thing about the house.
Val - Sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he will start taking better care of himself. He's the same age as my dh.
Speaking of old cars, both our car and pickup are about 19 years old. The pickup has 197,000 miles on it and we think the car is at about 170,000. The speedometer was flipped once we think before we got it.
Lynn - the check engine light comes on in our car (Ford Escort) and has for years. No one could figure it out because it never happened when they had the car. Finally took it to the college car shop and they replaced and air filter which did the trick and they only charged us $14. After a couple years it happened again, dh replaced the filter but it didn't help this time and it continues to go on and off. Otherwise it runs well. Toyotas are usually good cars and last a long time from what I've heard.
Webwoman - Glad you checked in, and sorry to hear you're sick...hope you're all better soon now that the antibiotic is doing it's thing.
Jess - It makes me sick the way so many "upstanding" community leaders etc are being caught doing terrible things! It seems there are few heroes for today's young people in the world today!
Hi all, just a quick post to say I'm thinking of you all. to Val. I hope your father starts to take better care of himself so you won't need to worry. Lynn, my jeeps engine light likes to bleep on, then turn off after a few days. Like its saying howdy. The code readr said its the gascap and sometimes that light will flick on and then off. Replaced the gascap and it continues to play its game. Anyway, nothing wrong with it. I just think it likes to chat with me. Carol sue, good thoughts headed your way for the stomach to settle and the surgery go on as scheduled. Gayle on the surveyors being idiots. I know I missed many but I need to go. But first, drum roll - I am babysitting my DGD tomorrow after blizzies vet appt. Keep in mind granddaughter is the child of my son and most of you know that story. But they called to ask me to babysit and I wasn't busy tomorrow so I said yes. Bet I shocked them.

Had a stupid headache at work most of today ~ think it was becasue I got myself all in a tizzy over the situation with my table. They (the surveyers) had removed it, but I found where it was parked later and used it when I needed to, then put it back. Hopefully they will let me keep it and get it out when I need to.
Got an admission (we had waited around all day, but had to wait for others to go home before we could bring a new one. Admission came at 5:45 ~ 15 minutes before my time to leave. Usually I would have stayed (it takes about an hour to process an admission) but my head was aching (one of those kind where you would like to gouge out your eyeball) and so I just did enough to get it in the system so they could get her medicines ordered, and apologized and told them they would have to finish it.
I probably did a no-no, but when my head is aching like that ~ I don't much care. I usually take Excedrin and that usually knocks it out, but the dr wanted me to not take any aspirin for a week, so I could have some lab work done. Plain Tylenol didn't do a darn thing. So, the no-no ~ ice cream......it helps sometimes with a headache. The headache did eventually lessen enough so that I could run the errands I needed to do on my way home from work. And now it is finally gone.
Had a really nice visit with DS Jason via phone tonight. Wish we could get to visit more often, but with our different work schedules ~ it is hard.
DD Sara invited me to go with her family on Sunday to see the cirque du soleil. That should be fun.
DH has arrived safely in Charlotte, NC. Looking forward to seeing pictures of DD Jennifer and DGD Evie. DH sometimes annoys people with his picture taking, but it is so much fun to have lots of them to look at.
Want to get that scrub sewn tomorrow, and make a pot of the zero point WW vegtable soup and a pot of chili.
Rie ~ thinking of you and your dad. Hopefully he will be willing to make some changes so he can be around for a while yet. It is hard I know (both making changes, and watching and worrying about the person who needs to make them).

Well, I have not been very happy due to personal things that I will not go into here. It just kills my mood for the entire day and that really ticks me. A perfectly good day is ruined because of "troublemakers" in my life. I've got to call an end to this.
I did NOT smoke yesterday. Nor did I drink. Good for me...
Glad you liked the cartoon. Yeah, it's actually sad how we can, like the guy on the scale, worry about something like a little water retention. Then again, of course, when you are looking for every little sign of progress, it's all important!!
On a brighter note, I got my hair cut yesterday and it's not all that bad. A LOT shorter but I asked for that, just because it's so expensive to get cut and I can't keep going for trims because the price is the same. Tokyo and good places for foreign hair (fine!) means money!

slim -- still holding in there.... Twelve-year-olds in general I could imagine would be difficult to shop for. But, yes, toys are definitely for younger kids! Now comes the age of looks!
slmn -- I love lentils! I throw them into everything I make (stews and such, that is) Since I'm vegetarian they are a good source of protein and stick with me!

Rie, I am so glad they found out your dad has SA, I know alot about it and I have seen treatment for it greatly improve a persons life, and I know your dad will feel the effects of the treatment as good, as well. At first it is a big hurl to get use to the machine, but he will have more energy, it will help with so many things that we don't understand. My thoughts to you as you go through this with him. Hang in there.

GOOD for your father. My DH was diagnosed with SA after his stroke. He never did get used to the CPAP machine. Below is a link for a list of 10 tips for avoiding CPAP problems -
