Default SBD and insulin resistance

Howdy,

Is anyone here insulin resistant? I have PCOS and have the IS to go with it as well. I would just like some advice.

I have been doing the SBD for a few months and have been very serious over the last month or so... very much staying on plan. When I am on phase 1, I lose weight quite well, not fast but it comes off... as soon as I start to add things it it really stalls and I also add weight on very quickly. So my weight is yoyoing quite badly. I have tried a variety of foods to add, usually including them in my lunch meal.

But the odd thing is that I went off plan for awhile and had low GI carbs with every meal (prefer wholegrain and brown to white anyway and feel better eating them) and my weight starts to go down again.

So I have been doing some reading and a drastically reduced carb intake can actually decrease your insulin sensitivity further, exacerbating weight issues when you start to add carbs back in. I like the detoxing effects of phase 1, but perhaps it isn't great for the insulin resistance? Has anyone found this?

I will have a month of eating a SBD/low GI menu plan and see how it pans out. The low GI info I have is very similar to someone who has been on phase 2 for quite some time. I have just been baffled by my weight going all over the place.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks
Marianna

I too am Insulin Resistant and what you are saying sounds pretty much on point. Keep to the lower GI foods. I decided today that I am going to do PII and quit worrying about another two weeks of failing at PI. The weight will come off slower but it will still come off and that is what counts. The more stable we can keep the insulin/sugar levels the more energy we will have and the more energy we have the better we will feel about ourselves.

Good luck to ya.

marianna and Bunna, I'm extremely IR, too, with the PCOS. Hence my extreme giddiness when I lost that whopping 1.5 pounds. It seems that the best way for me to lose is to keep my carbs low and what carbs I eat should be low GI carbs, like the berries and whole grains.

Sucks, huh?

Well, finally, at age 65, I was told that I probably had PCOS all those years when I could not lose weight and had problems getting preggers! Too bad we didn't know about IR back then. I even had an ovary removed because of a dermoid cyst which was a pretty big clue.
Lower GI carbs certainly have helped me. My blood sugar is now absolutely normal and I credit this way of eating with the change.

Artemis, I can't really speak to the PCOS, but I think your methods of figuring things out sound very good. Just make sure you give every change time to work before deciding it doesn't, okay?

For low GI eating, you might like this cookbook: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS.../3fatchionadie It has great recipes, and also lists information about low GI eating and lots of GI charts. I checked out a copy from the library...after I had post-it noted about 30 recipes I figured I should just buy a copy.

Best of luck, Artemis...have you posted in the PCOS forum on 3FC? They might have some tips, too.

I would very much like to have the link. I decided I am going to do PI again and then just add the very low GI foods back in at PII and III. I am determined to reach PIII which will mean I reach my goal of a size 12.

Here is a link for GI foods and also an index:

http://www.glycemicindex.com/

This is the site and books that I was referred to by my specialist. It has a range of books as well.

Here are some recipes:

Here is a forum thread, where people have posted a few different links and info:

I've been told by various doctors that I probably am PCOS/IR. I have major menstrual issues and other symptoms. But each time I've had my blood work done it's been absolutely normal. One doctor said that maybe it's just my body working really hard to bring everything back into stasis. But even if I don't have it, SBD will be good for me and might cure some of the other problems that there is no obvious explanation for.

Default As my Dr. Says "a classic case of PCOS"

yup PCOS/IR here too... I am taking 2000mg metformin to try and tip the scale back... plus working out an hour 20 minutes a day... I think I start to think it isn't working, but I think it seems very sllllow, although in retrospect if I'm down 2 pounds this week I'd have lost about 8 pounds a month... which is pretty normal... I have been on p2 for about a month and until we started working out heavily my weight really just stalled... very frusterating! But I think maybe I had added too many frankenfoods back in... So this week we are going back to chicken, turkey and fish... and saving the chili and anything not very lean for more special occasions.

I'm going to go check out the links you suggested... anything that will help I'm in for, as our fertility Dr. will not help until I've gotten to 140 (course I know that when I do get lower symptoms begin to fade and hopefully I won't need her anyway!)

Sometimes I wish I could wear a badge when people assume I'm cheating when I'm not losing saying "I HAVE PCOS! BACK OFF!!" I'm glad to see that there are more of us here and can be there to encourage each other when this stuff just gets ridiculously HARD!!!
